What a terrific book! This guidebook is incredibly comprehensive, making it easy for us less athletic types to explore all our city and surrounding areas have to offer! Lynn Schnaiberg's humorous voice makes Urban Adventure Chicago an enjoyable read as it's peppered with personal anecdotes. Enjoy!

Color me embarassed that all I ever do while in Chicago is culturally-inclined or else involves stuffing my face at family functions! I had no idea there was so much to do out-of-doors in the Chicago vicinity. With great wit and native know-how, Schnaiberg has painstakingly detailed the who, what, where and when so now none of us has an excuse. Lincoln Park Zoo I'm done with you -- there's a whole jungle out there to explore!

this book rocks! i recently moved to chicago from out west (bay area to be specific) and thought i was going to have to give up most of my outdoor passions. but this book has proven me wrong. i mean, scuba diving? surfing? rock climbing? backpacking? white water? fly fishing? it's also been great because it lists all the best organizations, gear shops, outfitters, events for whatever sport you're into--so it's easy to hook up with the right people. and there are a bunch of fun stories to read too (like the one about the urban spelunkers who check out the tunnels beneath the Loop or the guy who built his own awesome bouldering co-op in this random coach house.) just a great book for any chicagoan to have and use.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet (Adventure) Home Chicago.......2003-07-17

I've lived her for 6 years and had no idea about all the great adventures around the city. The best thing about the book is that it covers so many different activities -- now I can have a true multisport day, weekend, or longer trip. It's also helpful to know learn about the different clubs and outfitters for each activity, especially for things I've never done (climbing, paddling, scuba). Wish I had this book when I had just moved here. Now I have even more ways to exercise off Chicago's other specialty, excellent food!

        5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2003-07-09

Complete, comprehensive, detailed and fun. This is one of those books that is just a great guide/source of information to have if you live in Chicago or just visiting. I've lived several years in Chicago and always thought that I knew everything that was available to me to do outside there. But, this book included all sorts of new activities. Considering the short "outside season" in Chicago, do yourself a favor and pick this book up to make sure that you make the most of it.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Roosevelt-- for good and bad.......2002-11-06

This little collection of Roosevelt's speeches and essays gives a wonderful taste for the jingo President's beliefs in a Strenuous Life of hard work, manly virtues and manifest destiny. As a historian, I'm fascinated that this is being marketed as speaking to today's Americans. Roosevelt's comments on the role of white middle-class Protestant women as the breeders of a virile race and his exhortations to embrace 'righteous war' might seem a bit strange as current-day advice, stemming as they do from Teddy's concerns with forcing the Spanish out of Cuba and with 'race suicide,' the belief that white Protestants were being out-bred by Catholic immigrants and African-Americans. For those interested in the Establishment position on those issues in 1900, however, or in Roosevelt himself-- some of these were speeches and the rhythm of them gives you a wonderful idea of what they must have sounded like being delivered-- this is a valuable resource.

        5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book (Speech).......1999-02-15

This is a documented speech by "Teddy." If you believe that life owes you something as opposed to working hard and earning your keep, then you must read this book. If you are a self-starter and want to "make a name for yourself" through hard work, this book/speech will get you excited. It is a must read -- even for children. Hard work does pay off!

Biographers have often treated Theodore Roosevelt as "a larger-than-life monument carved in stone, unchanging, far from being flesh and blood, and quite imperturbable." So writes Kathleen Dalton, who gives us a fully fleshed, quite down-to-earth TR in this vigorous, sometimes critical biography of the 26th president.

Roosevelt carefully crafted an image of himself as a self-made man. Fair enough, Dalton suggests, though he had a big head start in coming from one of New York's wealthiest and best-connected families. More than shaping his body to overcome weakness, his spirit to overcome fear, he had to overcome the prejudices of his time and class in order to be truly fit for leadership, and even as president he wrestled with a few contradictions (opposing, for instance, a woman's right to divorce, but endorsing public flogging of spousal abusers). He was not always successful, Dalton writes, but he emerged in the end as a great champion of civil rights and of the middle and working classes, very much ahead of his time.

There's a lot of interest in Theodore Roosevelt these days--and for good reason, given the recent international turmoil and financial tumble, which, some would argue, beg for TR's patented big-stick and trust-busting treatment. Dalton's Theodore Roosevelt offers a satisfying portrait of a constantly fascinating subject. --Gregory McNamee

        Book Description

Theodore Roosevelt made himself the hero of his own strenuous life. He transformed himself from a sickly and fearful patrician boy into a fiercely adventurous--and always active--hunter, sportsman, writer, politician, and finally president. But one self-making was never enough for TR. He slowly fashioned himself into a man of the people, a defender of the poor and downtrodden, and a prophet of political ideas advanced for his day. This is the story of his personal and political development, of one man's struggle to conquer his own fears and to build a greater nation out of a divided collection of states. He urged America to engage life to the utmost, as he did.

Kathleen Dalton's Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life incorporates the latest scholarship into a vigorous narrative. It stands as the only full-length biography to use manuscripts recently discovered in Roosevelt attics. Dalton sheds new light on young Theodore's life during the Civil War and his fascination with the new natural history, his shame over his father's failure to enlist in the Union army, his struggle to achieve manhood, and his desperate pursuit of and sometimes less than idyllic marriage to Alice Hathaway Lee, the daughter of a banking magnate, when she was seventeen. Her death four years later left Roosevelt a grieving widower and father at twenty-six, and he went west to make himself a cowboy and western writer, before he could recommit himself to a new life and a new love in the East.

No other biographer has described how formative Roosevelt's marriage to Edith Carow proved to be in shaping his political career. In an account that may be compared with Joseph Lash's Eleanor and Franklin, Dalton demonstrates how Edith and Theodore's marriage, with its ups and downs, remade our history. In partnership with Massachusetts political mastermind Henry Cabot Lodge, Edith served as her husband's advisor, image builder, conscience, and at times censor. Dalton unravels the complex relationship between Roosevelt's initial political conservatism and the growing mood of progressivism that swept the nation in the early 1900s. He found unlikely allies among the army of women reformers who campaigned for pure milk and clean streets in the cities, and by 1912 he had become an active suffragist.

Out of this biography emerges a new picture of the Progressive Era, of state-building and reform won in partnership between TR and activists such as Jane Addams and Frances Kellor. In his political maturity Roosevelt aspired to be the builder of the modern American welfare state in order to give industrial workers a better life and at the same time to stand up more forcefully against the arrogance and greed of large corporations. Dalton shows how TR called for a revival of American arts and letters, and how his career as a scientist affected his reform program and his views on race, and how toward the end of his life he finally commited himself to the cause of racial equality. Both an updated political interpretation and an intimate personal story of a loving but difficult man, his wife, his family, and his loyal friends, Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life will change persuasively the way we see this great and complex man and his times.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sparse On Details, Long On Feelings.......2007-03-10

As readers of my [...] reviews are aware, I have read several biographies of Theodore Roosevelt. "Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life" presents TR from a different perspective than most other books. Focusing less on events and more on emotions, this book examines the relationships and issues which made TR's life strenuous.

This book helped me to appreciate aspects of Roosevelt's life that I had not picked up in other biographies. From this one I got a better appreciation of the relationship between TR and his wife, Edith. Whereas other books give the impression of an idyllic family life at Sagamore Hill, this one examines the tensions between Edith and Alice and parents and children, without destroying the overall impression of successful and affectionate family. More than others, this book delves into the health of both Theodore and Edith. Theodore's life long asthma and Edith's incapacitating illnesses are things of which I had not been previously aware.

I was impressed by the presentation of TR's post-presidential career. I became aware of his involvement in the 1910 gubernatorial race in New York and the possibility that he, himself, might have become a candidate. Author Kathleen Dalton seems obsessed with TR's radical, final years. His involvement in the development of the Progressive Party and his interaction with Fighting Bob LaFollette make for interesting reading. TR's later years are presented as times of frustration for a man of action bereft of influence. This was a period during which some of TR's long time friends and supporters, including Henry Cabot Lodge, remained true to their principles rather than to their friendship with him.

This book is relatively sparse on details but thick with themes and emotions. Showing less what TR did, this book explains more about what he felt. From my reading of this book I learned some things that I did not know about TR. One test that I apply to a book is whether it whets my appetite to read more. This one passes that test. I now want to know more about Bob LaFollette, Henry Cabot Lodge, the Progressive Era and what Theodore Roosevelt really stood for. I do not recommend this as a first TR biography, but it is a worthwhile read for the veteran Tedhead.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, concise treatment of TR's life.......2006-02-17

This is an outstanding, comprehensive account of TR's life. Dalton's characters really come to life; she gives them emotional dimension, which is difficult for some biographers to convey over a span of 100 years or more. She also makes a nice effort to present a balanced portrait of Roosevelt. Her depiction of his post-White House years and the 1912 campaign are particularly enlightening. This was my first attempt to read a complete biography of TR, and it was a pleasure!

        4 out of 5 stars Tough Task---good effort.......2005-11-30

Like so many buyers of this book, I have read a few books on the subject of TR's life. The author gives herself a tough task and comes close to making it in grand style. Her readability style could have been more user friendly. Her facts are great, but at points it is a little slow. I think she lacks the TR electricity that pulses through his life----a rare trait to capture in an historical book.
Nevertheless, the book is enjoyable and is a good, but not a great read.----a solid 4 star effort!

5 out of 5 stars Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life.......2005-09-28

This book records the life of an outstanding and
highly active president, who by the way won the
Nobel Peace Prize. He chose the strenuous life
        to overcome his asthma.

5 out of 5 stars Thedore Roosevevt: A Strenuous Life........2005-07-25

As an avid reader of anything written by, or about Mr. Roosevelt, I found this book fills a gap left by previous efforts concerning a true insight into the subjects personal beliefs. Other works have mentinoed his phylsophy of the Strenuous life, however after reading this book, one KNOWS what that term ment to TR.

I love this book!!! The photos of these pups are amazing--how on earth did they get these little dogs to pose so well? And there are adorable little puppy profiles, describing the likes and dislikes of each model! So funny. The projects are irresistible--I love the bright pink knitted neck-warming on that gorgeous pug! And the Jester sweater on the cover is to die for. Love, love, love it.

My problem with most dog sweater books is that the sweaters are sooo ugly. In PuppyKnits there are some designs of questionable taste, (and that scarf thing looks painful) but MANY with dignity and class. I love the little cable jacket and the felted coat. I also like that there are 3 basic coat styles, (one that is very good for boy dogs- if you know what I mean) and nothing with sleeves. Personally, I've never seen any dog look good in anything with sleeves.
Eaton seems fixated on one kind of yarn, (manos). Great yarn but she gauges it as worsted and I think its a bulky yarn. I'd use a real worsted instead in the patterns. I did and it worked well.

                                4 out of 5 stars Good start.......2005-11-01

This is actually one of the better books I have found so far for knitting petwear. All the patterns are basically two different styles- sweaters and something that looks like a cape with a tab on the underneath. The book has patterns that emerge from either of those basic styles. I would recommend some general knitting experience with this book- the stitches range from basic stockinette to cable, but you probably should have some knitting instructions to understand. There's also patterns for a cute hat and scarf/collar. All are very quicknit even if you only have a couple hours. I finished my first one, a sweater, in 3 hours. My second one took about 4 hours because of the smaller needles. The patterns are for small dogs around 18 inches in body length or shorter.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!.......2007-10-12

I suffered a late miscarriage four years ago, and this book still brings back memories of comfort to me. My husband bought it just days after our loss. I was deep in grief and at a point of depression, so it was good for me to read the words in this book and have a place to journal my feelings. To this day, my book is a treasure to remember the child I never knew by.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed..........2007-09-09

This is the perfect book for those of us who have faced the sudden and unexpected end of a pregnancy. I didn't know how to grieve my loss, after all, I had never seen or held or touched or heard my baby, but all the same, I felt an unexplainable depth of pain and loss. This book helped me to validate my unborn child's existence, give him or her an identity, and work through the process of healing. Five months after my loss, I still hurt and grieve and ache for my baby, but I know I'm on the road to recovery and will continue to recover with the help of books like this one. I also ordered one for my mother, who suffered a miscarriage 33 years ago...she said it even helped her to deal with the loss of that "unknown" child so long ago. I would recommend this to anyone who has suffered a pregnancy loss, who has lost a young child, or who loves someone who is going through such a difficult time as that.

This book was such a wonderful gift when we lost our daughter. Out of all the materials that were received this one truly walked me through my feelings and gave hope. We now donate a number of these books to our hospital so that the comfort I found can be shared with others that are grieving.

                                  5 out of 5 stars AMAZING resource.......2006-04-24

This book is extremely helpful for anyone going through the pain of miscarriage or infant loss. It is sensitive and wise, it was a God-send to me during one of the darkest periods of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift Book for Grieving Mothers.......2006-03-07

Looking for one book to give as a gift to a family grieving the death of their baby? This is the one! The hardbound "keepsake" quality of this book, matched with ample journalizing space to document and personalize your own grief journey, beautifully compliment the author's devotional reflections, packed with wisdom and spiritual insights from a mom who's "been there" through loss.

Grieving the Child I Never Knew was published the same month we experienced our second miscarriage, the death of our son Joel. I was devastated by the loss and so grateful for this resource to help me process all the emotions and questions that I had not known how to cope with when our first baby, Noel, had died six years earlier. This book became even more of a lifeline to me when we went on to miscarry Hannah later that same year. The author, having miscarried three babies and lost one son in infancy, was so honest and "real" both in sharing pain and hope.

In Our Baby, Our Love, Our Loss you will share with the Evans family the emotional, physical, and spiritual roller coaster surrounding the loss of their child at the beginning of the fifth month of pregnancy. Kathi shares honestly and from her heart the things that "we did 'right' and learned from, as well as the things we did 'wrong,' from which we learned even more."

Kathi understands that for a person who is struggling to "make sense out of the senseless," it's not about "right or wrong," but rather about how to heal from the tragic loss of a baby more gracefully. With this handsome book, David Sweetman, a biographer of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, brings together the dissolute lives of various artists who came to represent decadent fin-de-siècle Paris: Oscar Wilde, Félix Fénéon, Alfred Jarry, and, of course, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. As the author reminds us, imitations of the latter's work adorn the walls of French-themed bars worldwide and have become a shorthand for sanitized debauchery. Toulouse-Lautrec--absinthe drinker and brothel frequenter--was instrumental in the development of the poster, but what is his artistic legacy? Although Toulouse-Lautrec dominates the book's subtitle, Sweetman's sweep is much grander. In much the same way as his main subject was, Sweetman proves a sympathetic host to the women of Montmartre, tragic figures such as La Goulue, Jane Avril, and Suzanne Valadon, and he is particularly insightful on the singer Aristide Bruant's influence on the fledgling artist. However, the amount of tertiary detail, allied to an ambitious attempt to run a parallel life of Oscar Wilde, tends to be a little too much for the author to handle at times. Sweetman's demands for Toulouse-Lautrec's art to be taken more seriously--for people to look beyond the scenes of dancing and drinking--appear overstated, especially when the painter appears, at best, morally mercenary. Of course, Lautrec was more than a "deformed man who saw ugliness in everything." His work influenced Picasso, Seurat, and van Gogh and was part of a vanguard of realism in French art that swept it into the 20th century and helped establish graphic art as the people's art. It also had the dubious distinction of paving the way for popular culture as we now know it. Hamstrung by a lack of color plates, Sweetman's book is nonetheless a worthy and well-told account of a pivotal time. --David Vincent, Amazon.co.uk

                                      Book Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is known as the disfigured and dangerously self-destructive artist who recorded prolifically the louche world of sexy night-club dancers, lounging whores, and drunken bohemian merriment. Both in his life and art, he is thought to embody the climate of inebriated hilarity and excess of the fin de siècle.

But as David Sweetman, the noted biographer of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, shows in this definitive work, there was another Toulouse-Lautrec, a committed and concerned man who moved in a secret community of anarchist revolutionaries, whose work betrayed a deep concern for human suffering, an artist who etched his sympathy for fallen women and lesbians into his portraits, and who remained loyal to the disgraced Oscar Wilde when the poet was abandoned and reviled by most. Sweetman's enlightening study of Toulouse-Lautrec has uncovered a man whose alliance with radicals and outspoken social critics (such as Félix Fénéon) is implicit in his work.

Toulouse-Lautrec was also a man on the cutting edge of radical art. He helped design the sets for the play Ubu Rio, which, with its foul language and politically subversive imagery, stirred up a frenzy of public outrage and condemnation yet changed the course of theatrical history. Toulouse-Lautrec also created seminal works in the field of graphic art; his posters advertising performances and artistic events were often stolen from their public posting places and reappeared in the living rooms of middle-class homes, making his posters "the Trojan Horse of modern aesthetics."

Toulouse-Lautrec's seemingly endless capacity for debauched revelry and his larger-than-life persona are undeniable. Yet his art is as complex as he was, more varied and disturbing than it has been perceived in our century. Sweetman has introduced in Explosive Acts an altogether new way of looking at Toulouse-Lautrec, who, along with Oscar Wilde, Félix Fénéon, and their cross-Channel cohort of artists, theorists, and writers, was responding to many of the same social issues and political currents we now face at our own turn of the century.

There's a difference between nitpicking over minor historical innacuracies and making up nonsense out of whole cloth. This unfortunate book is of the latter sort. It's distorted by what the late Hal Draper called "falsifictions": self-invented statements uttered with an air of scholarly objectivity. The work will indeed transport one to another world: naturally so, because it isn't real.

Fortunately there are alternatives which are vivid, entertaining, and careful with the facts. Richard Ellmann and Barbara Belford have excellent, colorful biographies of Wilde. June Rose has a very fine biography of the fascinating Suzanne Valadon. Alexander Varias has a good account of the fin-de-siecle anarchists. Roger Shattuck has a truly superb book on the rich artistic ferment of la belle epoque, the 30 years or so before the first world war: "The Banquet Years". Shattuck's book is at once a definitive work of scholarship and a hugely fun read. Sweetman's is neither.

Incidentally Sweetman's bio of Gauguin suffers from the same tendency toward posturing. Whoops!, suddenly we're in the midst of detailed technical excursus into problems of large-scale engineering, or of epidemiology. (Gauguin tried to live in Panama at the time of the digging of the canal.) Is the author expert in these subjects? He certainly seems to want us to believe that he is. Nevertheless one doubts and, in doubting, questions his expertise on the subjects of art, literature and politics as well.

If you're looking for an entertaining experience from the pen of an expert, read Ellmann or Rose or especially Shattuck. Give Sweetman a rest.

I was able to read through chapter six before I lost all confidence in what the author was saying. his smug and shoddy treatment and inaccurate descriptions of suzanne valadon are mean-spirited enough to think the author carries some kind of personal agenda against tough and talented women. apparently, poor mr.sweetman became so distracted he got her maiden name wrong calling her marie-christine when her certified birth name is marie-clementine. this was irratating, but when I read page 166 I found it impossible to continue reading and trusting sweetman. sweetman has valadon's son, maurice utrillo, dying an early death on his "bad" mother's door step. maurice utrillo died in 1955. suzanne valadon died 1938. david sweetman must be the british version of america's [late] albert goldman. john e. nordin.

                                        Book Description

In this comprehensive work, which follows the lives of the sixty-nine bishops who served under Henry VIII, Dr Chibi not only asks why the Henrician bishops have acquired such a poor historical reputation, but also examines the deep impact which these men exerted upon the monarch's reign. Henry VIII's bishops were both a diverse and interesting group of individuals who had a profound influence on both king and country in the early modern period. They came from all social rankings, were highly educated and had become bishops through talent and ambition, and yet their historical reputation remains unflattering. This study, set within the dual context of court and diocese, breaks new ground in presenting the Henricians as a microcosm of wider society and as the fulfillment of that period's expectations of a bishop. The book is both an extensive examination of the careers, lives and thinking of an elite ecclesiastical force and a comprehensive review of the background to the early English Reformation. The focus is very much on those men who were caught between church and state, court and country and spirituality and temporality. Dr Chibi takes an in-depth look behind the scenes of Henrician England's religious, social and political turmoil to see the working of a group of men dedicated to stability and truth; men who were caught between service to the king and service to God. About the author: Andrew A Chibi was born in 1963 in London, Ontario and his continuing education has taken him from the universities of Windsor and Toronto, to Sheffield and the wider world of British academia, whereby he has taught Reformation Studies and Tudor history at the universities of Southampton. Derby,Manchester Metropolitan and Trinity and All Saints College (Leeds). He is currently to be found lecturing and tutoring at the University of Leicester.
