Twelve Narrated Tours of Venice.......2006-06-10
"The most dramatic entrance to Venice is by boat. You can enjoy the same breathtaking view enjoyed by visitors for centuries by taking the Alilaguna waterbus from the Marco Polo International Airport to the San Marco landing in Venice..." pg. 114
For the independent traveler, two CDs present tours to twelve locations in Venice. For the armchair traveler, this book/CD set allows for an enjoyable visual and auditory journey through famous locations of interest.
Pictures of winter floods may dissuade you from visiting at certain times when there are floods. Pictures of people walking across ramps to visit St. Mark's seems somewhat daunting. Gondolas moored along canals on foggy afternoons draw you back into dreaming about visiting Venice. Museums hold a large collection of Venetian boats, including elaborate gondolas from the city's regattas.
"When I went to Venice, I discovered that my dream had become-incredibly but quite simply-my address." ~Marcel Proust
Famous quotes, special instructions for when to turn the CD on and off, tips on where to enjoy famous views, all make this guide very worthwhile. There is a historical timeline and lots of historical tidbits for anyone interested in the city from a historical perspective.
~The Rebecca Review
Worth it for the audio guide alone!.......2006-05-25
The entire book has good amount of useful practical information but the unique aspect is the 12 audio tours. We extracted the audio tours off of the CD's and loaded them on our iPod nanos. It works like a charm. Occasionally we wished that the script was a bit less general but it is an excellent precursor of what is probably the wave of the future. Why follow guides who are trying to impart the information in three languages (perhaps with a heavy accent) and practically running the too-large tour group past the attractions when you can use this methodology?
Wow what a guide.......2005-07-06
It was magical. My husband and I travelled to Venice last month, and the audio guide Venice in Context was fabulous. Instead of weaiting for a tour, and trying to hear and follow the guide, we went at our own pace. It was easy to follow and use. A great and eceonomical way to tour a city, I recommend it!
2004 Writers Notes Book Award Winner.......2005-05-18
Seemingly designed for the curious and cautious American traveler, this illustrated/ textual/CD combination will guide you through, beyond, and back into one of the fabled cities of known history. Wayne takes care to neither preach nor cajole, yet sheds much light on a treasured living artifact. Perfect for singles or couples.
Useful travel guide.......2003-09-24

a good read, suffers from too psychological an analysis.......2003-08-20
This biography dates from 1976 and leans noticeably towards a psychological profile of the William Pitt. Pitt is portrayed as a manic-depressive, who spent many years in the political wilderness of opposition in the British House of Commons, being anathema to King George II (and later George III). The book gives credit to his oratory, his ability to make life almost impossible for those, in power, who he opposed. Pitt became part of the government (`The Ministry') during the Seven Years War, and was seen as driving the most successful phase of that war - The conquering of French-Canada, India, West Africa.
Alying is at his most effective when dealing with Pitt and his family. Pitt's grandfather Thomas was a thunderous influence, Pitt's relationship with his elder brother and the various of his sisters was intense, emotional and volatile. The various family connections to the Grenvilles and how this played out in the politics of the day are very clearly illustrated.
There are two areas of difficulty for this reader - one is the basic problem on English Aristocracy, when someone of the characters becomes a Lord. In the text a key player (e.g. Sir Richard Grenville, becomes Lord Temple, John Chateret an early
adversary of Pitts becomes Lord Granville, William Murray becomes Lord Mansfield). It becomes hugely confusing when these people are initially established by their common names to have them change midway into their titles.
The other major problem I had with the text is that it does not give a flavour of the vast effort put into the resourcing of the armed forces in Britain at the time. There are references to the difficulty in raising money and manpower, but the sheer effort involved in keeping the war underway was phenomenal - better books in this regard are `The Bells of Victory' by Richard Middelton and `The Sinews of War' by John Brewer. The main implication of this fault is that it lends too much credence to the `great man' theory ie. that Pitt's superhuman energy alone, shifted the country from lassitude to almost unconditional victory, and as a corollary that Pitt was surrounded by weak-minded ministers who ultimately concluded an unsatisfactory peace. The Duke of Newcastle is the chief victim of the flip side of this `great man' emphasis.
Perhaps as a consequence of this the absolute public outrage which is associated with Pitt's initial acceptance of the previously corrupt post of Paymaster General , and later with his acceptance of his pension and peerage, is underplayed. Pitt spent many years in opposition, deriding the corruption involved in government, for this he was the Whig most admired by Tories, also he was admired by small traders and `the public', their disappointment was therefore most intense when he was seen to abandon his principle.
The book does well on Pitts personal life - he was irritable and irritating, unable to form close friendships, though his seems devoted to his wife and children.
He was frequently in physical pain through gout, and the book lends a lot of credence to the manic-depressive theory of the stages of his life. He is portrayed as a close friend of America, both during its struggle with French Canada and later, with English taxation, which ultimately lead to the Revolution. More detail on this aspect can be found in Fred Anderson's magnificent `The Crucible of War'.
Overall then I think the book is a good read, suffers from too psychological an analysis of Pitt's character and gives insufficient weight to the interaction of other characters within the British administration of the day.

Book Description
This study examines the life of William Pitt the Elder - a political outsider who rose to direct policy in the Seven Years War. This title charts his rise and fall and should be of interest to all those studying the 18th century, empire and politics.
Customer Reviews:
For scholars only ..........2003-08-08
Anyone interested in rigorously researched late XVIII century English politics will probably enjoy (and learn) from Mr. Black's book. His work about William Pitt, after just a brief, usual part of a chapter on his parents, grandparents etc., dips immediately into maneuvers, conter maneuvers and consequences of ever shifting moods within the parliament.
Unfortunately the reader is presumed to know everything about the Seven Year War, the beginnings of America's revolution etc., as well as about England's major political parties and politicians at that time. The reader is supposed to be looking just for how Mr. Pitt and his opponents politicians handled these issues. So quite important historical events pass by as faint backgrounds.
Although this is somewhat intended to be a biography of William Pitt, and not the history of England in the 1700's, one would look for such a towering individual as a wonderful way to see big world events through England's government eyes. Instead we get a vey narrow perspective of these events. Probably that is the way most politicians see things nowadays ...

Book Description
This book begins with the author's failure as a collegiate athlete while being on anabolic steroids. His addiction to performance-enhancing drugs surfaced again while he served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz. His bitter homecoming to the small town of Wheatfield was short-lived and he moved to Sarasota Florida in search of wealth. While there his success was brief and involved a life of chasing elusive dreams filled with drugs and immorality. He soon lost his business and became indebted to a loan shark that threatened his very life. In a desperate act for money the author commits a robbery with a knife and ends up spending the next year behind bars. While behind bars the author is an eyewitness to a miraculous power that changed his life forever. Apart from his life story the book brings to light evidence supporting this miraculous power. The author also gives a deep insight into some of mankind's greatest questions concerning life and death.

Top knitwear designer Debbie Bliss presents a collection for newborns that will be cherished and handed down for years to come, from blankets and sweaters to hats and bootees, all using soft, snuggly yarns.
Customer Reviews:
Very cute! Another great addition to my collection!.......2007-08-21
This book is special indeed! I love the sweater on the cover and it was a fast knit too! Can't wait to try another! As usual, Debbie Bliss has great patterns that make it worth your time to knit!
Great book.......2007-08-11
This book has many nice patterns for babies. The cover sweater is very easy to make. You'll love the book.
Beautiful book, beautiful projects.......2007-07-18
This was one of the very first pattern books I bought when I had been knitting about year. I found so many projects that I wanted to knit! The book is incredibly gorgeous, and will inspire you to reach for your yarn and needles. I have already finished knitting the Velvet-Trimmed Cardigan for my 3-mo-old and am working on the Beaded Cardigan for my 3-yr-old (although it will NOT be beaded!). I was hoping for more designs for older tots, but what is in there is beautiful, and now I have another baby to knit for!!
If you are a thrifty knitter, or just don't have access to a fine yarn store, I found that Lion Brand Microspun yarn is a perfect substitution for the finer weight Debbie Bliss yarn used on many of the patterns.
I am an advanced beginner, and I don't find the patterns too hard. They are challenging, but definitely doable. Many of the designs are knit on size 2/3 needles, so don't buy this book if you are looking for quick projects. On the other hand, I think that a finer gauge looks better because it is more proportional on a little baby/toddler. Another reviewer mentioned fumbling through the directions. When I have questions, I call our local yarn store. They are always happy to talk me through a new skill.
All in all, this is an incredible book. I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to take a little time to make something beautiful.
Gorgeous book.......2007-03-20
This is a beautiful book with fantastic photos. The baby knits are absolutely elegant and NOT "knitty" or tacky. A great gift knitting book. The instructions are a bit simplified so they're not the best for a beginner knitter. Highly recommend.
Gorgeous baby knitting.......2007-02-21
Stunning, absolutely gorgeous. I bought the book for the cover jacket and found that everything else inside is also beautiful. I am teaching my daughter in law, how to knit and she just finished the jacket. She fell in love with the art and can't wait to start on the next piece. I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to relax and create a long lasting piece of art.

A practical & excellent potty-training resource.......2007-09-16
This is one of the best potty-training resources out there, and I have read many! I have a two-and-a-half year old daughter who I have been trying to potty-train since 2 yrs, and it has been tough going, until recently. I found this book in my local library and it has been well worth my reading time.
It is written in an easy to read manner, there are plenty of real-life experiences that readers can relate to, and covers the essentials of potty training - how to gauge whether your child is ready, comparison between past practices and present, beginning training, what steps can be taken if the going gets difficult or doesn't take off as expected, overcoming power struggles, night training, bed wetting, and other tips that help parents in making the potty training experience more tolerable, and even a great learning experience. Highly recommended!
The best Potty Training book out there!.......2007-08-29
I bought several potty books in an attempt to train my daughter, who was difficult to train. This is the only one that shared real-life training struggles and gave me the solution for stopping the "accidents." I recommend it to all my friends and have loaned my copy out more than once. If you only buy one potty training book -- buy this one!
Good for first time parnets.......2007-06-14
I thought this book had a nice blend of humor and useful advice.
Cursory... there are much better book options out there........2007-04-30
I couldn't agree more with the poster who said this book reads more like a novel than a helpful resource book. I like that it's not just a "feel good" book for parents and that it (mostly) sticks to the issues, but its format is poor and not a useful resource for parents seeking guidance about a specific training need. With the exception of one chart in the appendix where Jan Faull references one of her own studies dating back to 1995 (hello?), she often fails to extrapolate on her findings. For example, she remarks that electronic wetting alarms only work 85% of the time (another one of her findings perhaps?).
Further, I wonder where her M. Ed degree that's flouted on the front of the cover makes her much of an expert in an area largely governed by physical development. For example, she mentions curbing drinking too much fluid (p. 36) because "it just makes sense that the less liquid a child ingests the easier the bladder will be to control." Actually, the amount of liquid you choose to give your child will likely vary widely, given: your chosen strategy (naked for a while?), your child's stage in development, the time of day (less before bed perhaps), the child's age and even possibly gender (given that the ureter is longer in a boy lending them additional muscle control). So the sweeping strategy of witholding fluid is completely lost on this reader.
From a format point of view, large sections of the book such as "Stories from the Bathroom" and "One Parent's Training Story" are interjected randomly throughout and give the book an anti-cohesiveness (if that's a word) that make it frustrating if not difficult to read. The flow to the book is poorly crafted and it is too "piece-y." It relies on varying fonts, font sizes, indentations, bullet points, check boxes and icons to organize it's content.
She references TWELVE other resources to read about potty training your child in the appendix. That alone says it's not worth your $10 bucks.
Has solutions for tough potty training situations!.......2007-01-07
We used this book a few years ago. I recommend it every chance I get. I don't know how we would have survived without it. You will not regret buying this book.
Book Description
Hailed as the British counterparts to Charles and Ray Eames, Robin and Lucienne Day electrified the British design scene in the 1950s with their startling furniture and textile designs. Indeed, their influence over the next five decades has been so profound that their early products were recently reintroduced by Conran's Habitat. Lucienne Day pioneered the introduction of modern abstract pattern design in the textile industry. Her fabrics, which oscillate between bold geometric figures and more subtle abstract patterns, were produced by companies as diverse as Heal's and Liberty of London. Robin Day's influential furniture designs pioneered the use of materials such as plywood, steel, and plastic. His stacking polypropylene chair (right) is one of the best-selling chairs in the world. Robin and Lucienne Day, the first-ever full-length monograph on their designs, features never-before-seen archival material along with over 250 color images of the full range of their work, including furniture, ceramics, textiles, wallpaper, interiors, appliances, exhibit designs, and graphics. Spanning a half-century's creative output, no designer will fail to be awed by the genius seen in this book.
Customer Reviews:
WHAT A VISION!.......2001-05-19
I stumbled upon this book while touring the MCA in Chicago last month. I was very suprised. Not only had i never heard of Robin & Lucienne Day, but I didnt even know Britain had a real modernism movement that could have spawned these two pioneers. It was amazing to me especially because of the parallels with Charles & Ray Eames. In both cases the women (Lucienne Day & Ray Eames) were the more playful and abstract thinkers, often using their vision to tackle fabric design, textiles, sculpture, home accessories. The men (Robin Day & Charles Eames), often inspired by their wives' intuitive and playful sense of design, used their engineering knowledge and a keen sense of the modern aesthetic to change how the 20th Century viewed furniture design. Along with the American and other European design modernists, the Day's also began to experiment in bold and minimal uses of basic materials, such as plywood, aluminum, steel, fiberglass, and plastics. Their early designs from the late 1930s/early 1940s are some of the most startling and beautiful pieces of furniture I've seen, easily comparing to many other minimalists such as Eames and George Nelson, particularly. They were also one of the first designers of compatible storage units (a la Eames/Nelson), which helped to revolutionize living rooms all over Europe. Upon fingering through the book, it is easy to tell that all of the designers of the time were aware of each others work, as many pieces of Lucienne and Robin Day look very similar to other designers of the time. But I think that kind of mutual admiration was one of the reasons that period of design (1930s-1960s) was so important. It helped to further the ideas and aesthtics of the modernism movement into daily life, the middle class, and the history books. Check out Lucienne Day's textile designs especially close...you will see how much her designs impacted the funky 1950s fabrics that were in every post-war home in the US. Some of them are really out there, and some are just really minimal and beautiful. If you are at all interested in mid-century design, this book is a MUST. It provides a more global understanding of how design impacted society in the mid-century, and how many of these modernists are regaining their influence after all these years.
