Beautiful Book with Superb Visual Impact.......2006-08-28
I was instantly attracted by this book. The super-size images are so beautiful and so sharp that they look like a series of windows to the most beautiful scenes in China. All my families are really impressed.
I have been to some places shown in this book. The pictures was taken with such optimum lighting conditions and artistic angles that made the familiar places look grandeur and inviting, yet realistic, to me. As for the pictures about places I have never been, the beautiful scenes make me yearning to travel there.
All in all, this is the best coffee table picture book about China that I have seen.
I have one copy. But when I want to buy another copy as a gift for a friend leaving Boston to be an university professor, I cannot find any in the local bookstores. I only wish there will another printing of this book, or another edition.
I generally like all books in this "spectacular" series. Last month I bought a copy of "America's Spectacular National Parks" to give to a colleague returning to Japan.
I hope the author and publishers keep up with the excellent work!
Spectacular China.......2002-11-30
The pictures are beautiful but the book is put together very sloppily and is falling apart before it even comes out of the box
Beautiful book!.......2002-02-10
This book has the best photos of scenes around China that I have ever seen. I love the photos, but have been very disappointed in the quality of the binding. It is not strong enough to support such large, heavy pages. The first book arrived with the binding already torn away and the second one has to be handled VERY gently to prevent the same thing from happening. As a coffee table book it is meant to be looked at and I don't like having to ask people to be careful with it. I don't know if I got a couple of bad copies or if they're all so delicate. Maybe future editions will be more hardy.
Gorgeous photos.......2001-12-09
The photos in this book are beyond spectacular! If you are interested in China, this is the ultimate coffee table photograph collection. Highly recommended.
Beautiful china coffee table book.......1999-09-06
This is a wonderful coffee table book for anyone interested in China. It is a large format with beautiful photography including several 3-page fold-outs. China's natural beauty, architecture & culture are all here.
You see get to see ancient stone sculptures, the majestic Imperial Place & the seemingly endless Great Wall. Breathtaking waterfalls, serene lakes dotted with pagodas & mysterious mountains enveloped in clouds follow.
I was very impressed the many golden Buddhas & a boat made of marble. I also loved the peaceful gardens filled with water, rocks & trees. The native people in traditional dress are fascinating as well.
My favorite of the entire city of Beijing lit with fireworks is nothing short of spectacular. The text and detailed captions provide a thorough background for the photos. This is a book you can get lost in for hours.

Book Description
George W. Bush has brought the question of religion back into American political life in a way that it has not been for decades. From the 2000 election through the challenges America has faced in the wake of September 11, Bush's personal faith -- and his conviction about the importance of religion in our national life -- have won him lasting admiration from the right, while attracting fury and scorn from the left.
Now, presidential scholar Paul Kengor, the author of the acclaimed God and Ronald Reagan, reconstructs the spiritual journey that carried George W. Bush to the White House -- from the death of his sister, which shaped his character, through the conversion experience that changed his life. He offers the most thorough and careful reading of President Bush's public statements about God, Jesus Christ, and the sense of confidence, perspective, and mission that his faith has given him. Kengor devotes special attention to Bush's efforts to highlight America's tolerance of all faiths -- especially, in light of potential tensions after 9/11, his extraordinary support for Muslim-Americans. He investigates whether the invasion of Iraq was precipitated by a specific religious mission on the part of the president. And he outlines the most up-to-date account of the role of religion in the 2004 election, from John Kerry's squabbles with the Catholic Church to Bush's own remarks about the "higher father" to whom he looks for guidance in times of trial.
Matching detailed new research with thoughtful analysis, God and George W. Bush is the definitive look at the spiritual life of this American president.
Customer Reviews:
a one sided cheerleading effort.......2006-08-07
It's only fair to read both sides of the story. Therefore after a couple of books critical of George W. Bush and the Religious/Christian Right/Conservatives I figured it's only fair to read one in support of the former, most likely it being in support of the latter too.
So after "With God On Their Side", after "Roads To Dominion", after "Close Encounters With The Religious Right", after "What's Wrong With Kansas?" and after "The Faith Of George W. Bush" by Stephen Mansfield I read this one. And going for full disclosure, I also read "Fortunate Son" by James Hatfield.
And the last one 'enjoys' an infamous reputation of being a full fledged dismantling of GWB. However, Hatfield's book still stroke me as being more fair, more balanced and all in all more neutral in tone, than this cheerleading effort by Paul Kengor.
My tolerance ended on page 210 when there was a paragraph implying that Saddam Hussein was involved in the events of September 11. Before you jump at me and talk about the 'atmosphere' of support that was in Iraq for the terrorists and for Al Qaida, that's not even what Kengor is writing about. He's basically saying that Saddam was about as much involved as you can get, shy from flying one of the planes himself. And that is just false.
This shows Kengor's agenda. And that's why it does not come as a surprise that he leaves out the US support for Saddam during the Iran vs Iraq war (a war he also writes about, plus he mentions "He tried to kill my dad.") Just like "Faith & George W. Bush" he also leaves out 'those missing years', the controversy about his guard service, how he failed as a business man, etc. etc. etc. instead doing his best effort to characterize and portray Bush as messianic and infallible as possible, without being blasphemous about it.
Therefore the conclution is: it's a biased effort by a supporter, who sugarcoats everything the man does, putting him on a pedestal, glorifying him unquestionably.
And I don't like that. I believe that there's always two sides to a story. That's why I read this book after all. A good book to me shows both sides, albeit it may put the emphasis on one. However, this one doesn't. Oh, not even remotely.
You've got to be kidding............2006-05-13
I don't believe that God would have anything to do with this man. It's time to get un-programmed, America. Start thinking outside of your cage and see this man for what he is - a patron of evil. Mr. Bush has successfully passed the so-called "Patriot Act" that can and eventually will take away your God-given unalienable rights. How many rights will you loose before you draw your line in the sand? He has no regard for the Constitutional Republic that this country was founded on, instead he insists on a Democracy. Spying on Americans is OK with Mr. Bush. Our borders are left unguarded while our children die in a war for oil. Mr. Bush has said that "it would be easier if this were a dictatorship, as long as I'm the dictator". That statement when heard is chilling to say the least. Would God inspire a man to say something like that? I strongly doubt it. Wake up America! We're being led down the road to tyranny by this man! Don't support him by buying this book. Buy a bible instead.
Lying and preferring the rich to the poor.......2006-03-10
are not part of the gospel of Jesus Christ. That so many think that Bush is a man of god shows how little the gospels are actually read. Jesus had only disdain for the rich and endless compassion for the poor and marginalized. Yet Bush's tax cuts are mostly for the rich and his drug program for seniors greatly aids big pharma. And Bush lied us into the war in Iraq and continues to lie every time he says the war there makes this country safer, when our own national intelligence estimates show that it does not.
Shame, Mr Bush.
Don't bother.......2005-12-01
I read this book yesterday and found it disturbing. I have no issue with religion, but I seriously question George W. Bush's legitimacy as a leader let alone a spiritual one. This book is not about spirit, but about religion and only one side of religion. The author tries to paint a picture of a just and moral character in the context of near Christian fundamentalism.
I have no problem with that, except the assertion that it is the way and not a way amoung other ways. It is hard for me to vision George W. Bush, as much more than someone born with an enormous silver spoon with someone always available to show him the way. If you are skeptic of fundamentalism and its message, stay away from this book.
A good book about a great leader........2005-08-27
Paul Kengor has given us another well-researched and well-written book. Just as he helped us understand the motivation and success of Ronald Reagan in bringing down the "evil empire," so he makes it clear to us the George W. Bush is a man of vision, integrity and courage who wants to help bring freedom and democracy to those that some feel are of the wrong ethnic or racial group to be able to govern themselves.
To those who quote the First Amendment against President Bush, if they would carefully read the article they would find that the regulations restrict Congress, not religion.
Dr. Kengor is a young man, and I look forward to many more quality books coming from his pen--or word-processor.

Book Description
The Dapper Don
A cocky kid from the streets of East New York, he rose to become one of the most feared men in the nation.
Establishing a power base through brilliant politicking and blood-chilling ruthlessness, at 45 he took control of America's richest, most powerful crime family following the gangland-style execution of his predecessor.
Though the target of almost contionous FBI and police surveillance, he has spent little time in prison . . . and has never been convicted of racketeering, drug-trafficking or murder.
Prize-winning journalists John Cummings and Ernest Volkman's shocking true account of the brutal and meteoric rise of John "Johhny Boy" Gotti from Brooklyn "bone-breaker" to lord of the Gambino Family -- a riveting exploration into the the bloody machinery of La Cosa Nostra operating on the dark side of the American dream.
Customer Reviews:
Published Too Soon.......2006-07-04
In GOOMBATA, authors John Cummings and Ernest Volkman mention Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano on exactly three pages.
That's not much, considering that Gravano was the insider who turned informer, put Gotti in prison for the rest of his life, and essentially brought down what was left of New York's Gambino crime family. But it is hardly surprising: published in 1990, GOOMBATA was written before Gravano ever hit the witness stand in a trial the authors failed to anticipate.
The book reads quickly, and although I occasionally wondered about the authors' sources I found it reasonably entertaining--until I realized that it fell short in terms of time line. At that point I was very annoyed indeed. Simply put, Cummings and Volkman would have done better to wait and see how everything was going to turn out. They didn't do that, so if you really want to know what happened... well, you're going to have read another book.

A Dying Breed in More Ways than One.......2006-05-24
This book was originally published in 1990, and therefore, as other reviewers have pointed out, the ending just drops off the edge of the cliff, leaving the "hero" in jail awaiting trial.
Messrs. Cummings and Volkman, the co-authors, are described as "prize-winning journalists."
The book rolls along pretty well, although in the paperback version the typeface is small and paragraphs are large, and there is very little conversation, except what the authors apparently pulled from court transcripts. These, in turn, were often pulled from "bugs" planted by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies inside the "social clubs" used by Gotti and his goombata (like the Spanish compadres or compas).
So, this book is not much like a novel at all. To its credit, it is still absorbing reading, if, that is, you are one of those Mafioso groupies, like me. My grandfather was of Italian descent, so in my fantasies I'm "Skinny Al" Pedrone, riding shotgun with these very folks, my heroes.
In reality, of course, I'm a frightened little "punk," the kind these folks would have for lunch (were I edible, which I doubt).
Another reviewer wrote that too much of the book was devoted to Gotti's childhood. I felt just the opposite: I would like to have learned more about his early life. For example, very little is said about how he met and courted his wife.
I know: This type of personal information is difficult to obtain, unless you are talking to the subject himself. That's why I had the impression that the co-authors more or less rushed this book into print, to capitalize on Gotti's notoriety in 1990. They did not actually want to wait and write a thorough biography, because the reading public might lose interest fifteen years later.
They were right.
Diximus.
Crap.......2004-05-20
This is awful stuff - it goes way too fast, and the amount of facts that are wrong is unbelievable from two so-called mob experts. Among the wrong facts - the circumstances surrounding the Frank Costello shooting, the McBratney murder, the Westies alliance, and much much more. For the real Gotti story, try Gotti: The rise and fall.
Goombata book review.......2003-04-08
John Gotti( Dapper Don), I feel is the cause for the downfall of the Gambino crime family. In "Goombata", it shows how Gotti loved the attention from the Press and Media. He alone made the FBI and RICO chase after him. John Gotti wanted a flamboyant life-style, which is why he was number one target among organized crime leaders. John Gotti broke the number one rule in La Cosa Nostra, the secret life.
I like the tone the author set. Chapter after chapter I wanted to know what John Gotti was going to do to become a known man within the Gambino family. "Goombata" is a fast and terse biography. This novel would've been the perfect biography but the author, John Cummings, did'nt make the novel long enough. He could've coverd more about his coming up among the ranks years. Also, there was no clear resolution because when this book was published, John Gotti was on trial for racketereering charges that he later was found guilty for. Overall rating, three stars.
goombata.......2001-01-24
not the best book i have read but not the worst.despite the book being flawed because it finishes before the final prossecution. it does offer a few good chapters and also throws down some opinions that s contradicted by other sources.like who did whack his body gaurd near the end of the book.some good photos but not exactly a work of art. if only he good have waited to find out what happened at the final prossecution then he could have definately called the rise and fall of john gottis crew .there are definatelly better mob books on the market but if you do want a different veiw then it may be worth checking out.

The Whole Craft of Spinning: From the Raw Material to the Finished Yarn.......2006-03-16
The book was very basic and an excellent resource for the novice spinner. I was able to teach myself how to use my spinning wheel and how to spin my own wool. Highly recommend this reference.
useful manual.......2006-02-26
this is a good book for a beginner spinner or for someone who wants a helpful book should they forget the basics. good value.
Perfect Beginner's Book.......2005-08-02
New spinners should have a copy of this book in their library. Not only does it tell you about spinning, the history of spinning and spinning wheels, it also provides a brief synopsis of spinning exotic fibers.
A Good Start.......2003-03-26
I purchased this book as I was unsure of whether I wanted to spend a lot of money on spinning, and I just wanted to get some of the basic information. That was 4 months ago, and I have bought a spinning wheel.
This book gave me the basic information about types of spinning, wheels, types of fibers, as well as technique information on types of drafting, how to set yarn and basic yarn structure.
It was very much what I thought it was, a book to get someone started without a lot of initial outlay.

You will learn how to Help your child and dog develop a strong relationship, built on trust and cooperation Set your family up for success with a minimum of effort Recognize canine stress signals and know when your dog is getting worried about normal kid activity Identify serious behavior problems before someone gets hurt Provide specific help for managing the interactions with dogs through each stage of your kids' lives from infancy through the teen years Prevent your child from becoming part of a growing statisticchildren who have been bitten by a dog.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific book for all parents of kids & dogs!.......2007-08-14
This is one of the very best resources I've found for families with children and dogs. It has lots of practical kid-friendly and dog-friendly tips and ideas. I've recently read hundreds of books on similar topics while researching a book I'm writing, and this one really stood out. As a child/family psychologist, I was impressed with how solid it was, and as a therapy dog trainer, I thought the advice about dogs was spot-on! It deserves all the stars that everyone has given it!!
Practical and positive!.......2007-05-30
Colleen writes in a reader friendly manner. Her life experiences as Mom and dog trainer have brought together this wonderful resourceful book families can turn to time and time again! I recommend this book to all families I work with as it describes practical and positive solutions for challenging and hectic lives! :)
Two Thumbs Up!.......2007-04-06
There are certainly other kids and dogs books out there but, this one is so far the best I've found. Colleen Pelar gives great, practical tips for parents of children at all ages that can be put to use immediately. I don't have children but, am active in rescue and am always looking for more training to help adopters and I learned so much. This book will be required reading for all adopters with children going forward. GREAT read!!!
Finally-- a really great kids and dogs book!.......2006-04-22
Finally-- A really good book on how to live with kids and dogs. Most dog trainers don't have a lot of good things to say about kids (although I overhead one saying that she thought they tasted a lot like chicken!), but Colleen has written a book for parents by a parent who is also an excellent dog trainer. Colleen tells it like it is, from someone who knows. Her child-friendly, family-friendly and dog-friendly approach is realistic, safe, and right on the mark. I cannot say enough good things about Ms. Pelar or this book. Please read it and get a copy for your favorite family!
As the director of training for the 4th largest shelter in the country, I see every day that the consequences of people not having this information is that dogs end up in shelters. I applaud Ms. Pelar for writing it and helping keep dogs in their homes through education.

A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.......2005-11-11
Living with Kids and Dogs... Without Losing Your Mind is a no-nonsense advice guide for parents that emphasizes realistic and practical solutions to common parent/pet-owner problems. Dog training facility manager Colleen Pelar covers when not to get a dog (children under 5 are not old enough to interact with a pet responsibly and require supervision around animals; children in general cannot be burdened with the requirement to care for the pet or see it taken away - if the parent doesn't have the resources to follow up on a child's dog care then the family should not get a dog!), how to select an animal with suitable family temperament, how to prevent dog bites, and issues specific to children of various age groups from infant to teenager, and how to help one's children say goodbye to a beloved family pet when it passes on. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this no-nonsense, plain terms guide to dog care and managing a family with kids and dogs. A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.
Book Description
One of modern photography's greatest pioneers, Edward Weston-whose work includes indelible images of nudes and peppers, rocks and shells, clouds and landscapes-awakened his viewers to the sensuous qualities of organic forms. In his extensive biography of Weston, which was nominated for a National Book Award, Ben Maddow draws heavily from Weston's uncut journals and letters, and from the reminiscences and written accounts of his closest friends and family, to reveal the man and artist behind the seemingly opaque formalism of the photographs.
Customer Reviews:
A suburb read!.......2005-06-23
I've read a lot of biographies in my life but nothing holds a candle to Maddow's "Edward Weston: His Life". The way Maddow weaves his words encourages the reader to exalt in the fine art of biography. In other words, Maddow's biography not only becomes a celebration of Weston's life and work but a celebration of the oeuvre itself. A suburb read!
Sex.......2004-02-12
A delicious read, passionate, imaginative and not very accurate. Maddow was obsessed with Weston's sex life but that may have helped Weston's fame and Maddow's sales.

Book Description
This volume is unusual in that it focuses entirely on the episcopate of a single bishop. Peter des Roches was one of the most important and controversial figures in the political history of thirteenth-century England. A large number of administrative writs relating to his role at court are included in this collection of over 340 documents. The editor's introduction (supplemented by an appendix detailing the lives of more than 40 individuals) provides a rounded picture of the bishop's household and his contacts at court, shedding light on the influence of foreigners in the reigns of King John and Henry III. Vincent's edition complements EEA VIII (Winchester 1070-1204) to form an invaluable primary source for one of the wealthiest and most important sees in medieval England.
