Book Description
Part guide and part spiritual journey, this visually stunning book celebrates America’s statewide system of historic back country roads. It takes armchair travelers on a richly illustrated journey thorough the most beautiful landscapes of one of the nation’s most geographically diverse states, and serves as a guide for those who decide to embark on an actual trip over these charming lanes.
The project began when photographer Bob Rashid undertook a two year odyssey to preserve the remarkable sights along the 67 official Rustic Roads in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin's Rustic Roads, in the images of Rashid and the words of five of Wisconsin’s most recognized and cherished authors, is a testiment to places where the efficiency of a road is not measured by its speed, nor its purpose necessarily defined by a destination, and which beckons the reader to linger.

WOW! You need to experience these roads........1998-01-03
If you like to drive, read this book. If you like nature, read this book. If you like to look at the pictures, read this book. This book and $20 for a tank of gas has become my favorite wedding/etc. present for friends. A wonderful coverage of the roads, the state they wind through and the minds of the authors and photojournalists.

Book Description
On an October evening in South Pasadena, a horrifying wave of flame swept through a large home improvement center, snuffing out the lives of four innocent people, including a two-year-old boy. Firefighters rushed to the scene, even as a pair of equally suspicious fires broke out in two nearby stores. Silently watching the raging inferno in the midst of the heat, smoke, and chaos was a man respected as one of California's foremost arson investigators, a captain in the Glendale Fire Department ...
From Joseph Wambaugh, the critically acclaimed, nationally bestselling author of The Onion Field, comes the astonishing true story of a nightmarish obsession -- and the hunt for a brilliant psychopath who lived a double life filled with professional tributes and terrifying secrets.
Customer Reviews:
Great audio book, too.......2007-09-03
I thought that Ken Howard's reading added to the drama of this story about an arson investigator who set and then videotaped his own fires. The author paid appropriate homage to those whose tenacity finally brought John Orr to trial. The trial (transcript) was pretty much verbatim, but that is a plus because the attorneys were so eloquent.
Fire Lover fascinating............2007-04-05
Nobody does non-fiction crime reporting like Joe Wambaugh. Like The Onion Field and The Blooding, this is a non-stop read. Wambaugh's insight into human behavior and motivations is fascinating. Joe Wambaugh is an american treasure.
Fire Lover.......2007-04-04
Even though you know how the true story ends it is a page turner. The arsonist's mind is beyond comprehension. Wambaugh does a great job with this account.
TMI.......2007-03-18
Too much information. The story line gets bogged down and lost in Wambaugh's microscopic details. Too bad. Could've been an interesting read.
exciting true crime!.......2006-12-20
"Fire Lover" is an very exciting and well-written true crime book by Joseph Wambaugh, the author famous for writing "The Onion Field". The descriptions of fires, vehicle chases and other action sequences are so clear and thrilling you really feel like you are there. It drew me in from the very beginning, with an extremely realistic account of three simultaneous and deadly fires in Pasadena, California businesses on October 10, 1984. Clues eventually lead to arson investigator John Orr as the arsonist in these and a series of other fires. Orr, it turns out, was a legend in his own mind who used the fire investigation as the basis for a poorly written book. I was glad that Wambaugh did not neglect Orr's early life. I always want a true crime author to answer the question "why", and there was more information about Orr's background than I had expected. Fascination with fire is a big indication of psychopathology. I did a little skipping, though. Emphasis on the scenes inside the courtroom got a little tiresome. Well-written and very vivid, "Fire Lover" is by far one of the best true crime books I have ever read.

Everyone Should Read.......2007-09-17
The broadest approach I have read thus far in support of the anti-pet belief is Carole Wade's "Is Pet Ownership Destroying the Lives of Americans?" To give you a spoiler, the answer is yes. Written in first and third person perspectives, this short reader friendly book is easy to interpret.
Wade's emphasis is on canines. She gives exposure to subjects ranging from "The Fifty-Billion-Dollars-a-Year Pet Industry," "Pet Parents," "Pet Son," "Pet Daughter," "Dog Dander," "Rescued Dogs," "Therapy Dogs," "Mixed Breeds," and "Noise Nuisance." Wade names the harmful worms and diseases that dogs carry and transmit such as SARS, heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and ringworm.
If have an interest in this subject this is the right book for you. Chapters of mention, "2: Domesticating the Dog (History of Dogs), "5: Millions of Dogs a Year Sink their Teeth Injuring and Disfiguring Innocent Toodlers, Children, Women, Men, and the Elderly: Seven Reasons to Ban Legal Minefields that Bite (Statistics on Fatal Dog Bites" "6: Guide Dog [...] (A Solution to Service Dogs),"14: 'Rocky' and his Pet-Parents In Brentwood, California (How the Rich Spoil their Dogs)."
This book is an essential read for pet lover and hater alike.

The Ashley Book of Knots takes us back to a time when knots saved lives and put dinner on the table. Whether out at sea or in a pioneer cabin, knots were a part of daily life, one that is nearly lost today. But in this attractive, well-organized archive of more than 3,900 different knots--presented through 7,000 illustrations--the art of knot tying lives on, both as a historical reference and a reservoir of handy knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Difficult but outstanding... the bible of knots.......2007-10-11
This is a difficult book for beginners, but it's outstanding...Some knots have to be complemented with information of other books (step by step books). I recommend!
Comprehensive, well illustrated, and fascinating.......2007-09-21
This is an excellent book for flipping through. It is well illustrated, and the descriptions of the knots are full of great information. I have encountered a few knots that I couldn't tie based on the words and pictures, but the vast majority of them are clear and can be mastered with a few minutes' effort.
My only real complaint is that, with the book alone, it is difficult to look up a particular knot by name. However, since the Ashley Book of Knots is the standard reference, Google is extremely well suited to overcoming this limitation. For example, the index doesn't mention Monkey's Fist, so I googled "monkey's fist ABOK" and didn't even have click any links before I found the correct number (2200).
All told, this is a great book and I'd recommend it highly.
Get knotting..........2007-09-05
As a self proclaimed 'knot enthusiast', I'll challenge that you're not a REAL knotter till the 'Ashley Book of Knots' is on your shelf! I've had hour apon hour of fun reading up and then trying all but the most difficult knots shown in this veritable encyclopaedia.. It makes a great talking point with dinner guests too!
THE One Source for Knots.......2007-08-29
I do decorative knotting and collect knotting books. This should have been one of my first purchases. This book has amazing historical and useage information as well as excellent drawings. The 620 pages are almost totally covered with how-to drawings and explanations of the knots. All the knots are numbered. When a new knot is introduced that is similar to a previous one, it references that number. Some of the names of knots are not what I've seen in other books, but I don't see that as a problem. If I could only buy one knot book, this would be it.
Try the square knot first.......2007-06-27
This is a fantastic book of knots. I would caution though that it is not an unstructional book with step by step details on how to tie the knots. If you have a basic understanding of knots you can figure out how to tie most of the knots in the book and with some practice and research you could get to where you could manage to tie anything I'm sure. This is a book that I thought I would add to my library but it seems I take it everywhere with me as I am fascinated with the different knots that I can continue to learn and teach to others.

Good guide to places you'll want to go, but take a map........1999-02-16
This is a handy guide with lots of information about what's out there, but be warned - take a good map with you! I've only tried two of the day trips, and each had a serious typo (like transposed street and highway exit numbers). For a newcomer to the area, this is very frustrating. Ms. Feeney is a good writer who knows her destinations well, but she needs a better proofreader.
A wonderful resource for actual and armchair gardeners........1999-02-11
Whether the Seattle area is your home or you plan or hope to visit, take this book with you. Where else can gardener's learn how to get their fix on a rainy day,or in mid-winter? Not only does Stephanie Feeney tell you where to go to satisfy all of your garden and gardening desires in and around Seattle, but she plans your whole excursion, with driving directions, suggestions on where to eat, and even find lodging, and gives excellent and interestingly written descriptions of all the places she lists. She gives a kids tour, highlights on the islands in Puget Sound, specialty tours for book lovers, tree and shrub enthusiasts, ornaments in and for the garden, and more. Get this book; you'll love it!

Popular scholar Ravi Zacharias sets a captivating scene in this first in the intriguing Conversations with Jesus books. Through dialogue between Christ and Gautama Buddha that reveals Jesus' warm, impassioned concern for all people, God's true nature is explored. Customer Reviews:
One Closed Mind.......2007-09-15
This book has nothing to do with Buddhism, it's intended as polemic against Buddhists and Buddhism. I could write a book about Christ and put words in his mouth to make him seem foolish but that would have nothing to do with what he taught!!
Well thought out and thought provoking book.......2007-08-16
I loved the style of this book. Throughout the whole book, I got the sense that I was really there in the boat with Priya as she had the privilege to discuss her life between two great minds. I liked how Mr. Zacharias used her as an example for several reasons:
1. Her position as a prostitute is considered a lowly occupation, no matter what class or cultural background a person comes from.
2. When she contracted her illness, a incurable one at that, she lashed out at the people surrounding her because she was in pain and wanted to share it in a negative form. We, in one aspect or another, all do that.
3. Her life was a downward spiral of pain and suffering. How can we not all identify with that in one aspect or another? We may not be prostitutes but our lives can somehow spin downward. We lose our jobs, homes, family, kids, property, etc.
Priya was "us".
As she has this conversation with these two great men, Jesus and Buddha, she represents what each of us would like to do-ask God to explain the reason for this life.
The conversation between Jesus and Buddha is polite and courteous, thought provoking and full of respect for each other. Not at one time, did I belive that they were attacking each other. Mr. Zacharias did a fine job in expounding one what Buddha taught and contrasting them well.
Jesus would say, the cause of suffering is walking away from God. Buddha said the cause of suffering is personal desire. Jesus says, "I come that you might have life and have it more abundantly." Buddha would say "You must reach Nirvana, the exstinguishment of the self and there will be no more suffering." Which of these worldviews are correct with Priya standing in the middle of them? Read the book and judge for yourselves.
For me, I have learned that I cannot depend on myself for godhood. It's just so much more easier to put my life in the care of someone who can control everything. I don't have to walk this life alone. I trust Him implicitly to take care of things for me. I don't want to do it all nor do I have the desire to do it. I get tired, I get sad and depressed. I make mistakes and I'm not always on my best behavior. Thankfully, Jesus understands this and says to me, "Cast all your cares on me, because I care for you." Reader, it just feels so good to let Him handle it. My life is not mine but His and I'd rather have it that way. (Got carried away here but I hope someone understands what I'm saying.)
Solid.......2007-08-03
This was a solid book. I think Ravi does a good job of trying to capture the Mind of Christ. It's an interesting book. I recommend it.
A misleading book.......2007-05-22
It does not surprise me that Ravi Zacharias' "The Lotus and the Cross" misleads the reader into a rather sophomoric account of Buddhism, as Christian authors have their mind made up already as to what their "competition" is - this goes hand in the hand with the parochialism of there being only "one way to Salvation." Could we expect more from Zacharias? Certainly this is not a work that draws together the similarities between the human need to connection with the Divine, irregardless of the form it takes.
I believe the similarities between what Christ and Buddha ACTUALLY experienced and expressed are far more profound than those card-carrying followers of particular faiths are willing to admit. Are we not all human, after all, which is to say, borne from the Divine?
An Excellent, Competent Contrast from a Decidedly Christian Point of View.......2007-05-08
Christianity is exclusive in one sense and Christianity is not exclusive in another. Jesus himself proclaimed himself God and the only way to God (John 1:1, 14:6, 8:24-36) but Jesus also invites all to come (i.e. John 3:16). Yes, Jesus said that you cannot share Jesus with other gods or things. Jesus must be your heart's sole desire. But if you have the desire to come to Christ, you can indeed come.
Buddhist sympathizers reviewing this book have an imbalanced amount of vitriol towards Ravi and this excellent book, and are doing so through the lens of their own ignorance. Worse here is the amazing arrogance they assert by claiming that they know better what Jesus would say than an learned and established Christian such as Ravi. It's one thing to accuse Ravi of mischaracterizing Buddha, but it's completely absurd to assert that they would know better about what Jesus would say.
Now it is true that Ravi takes a fairly current event and uses it as an occasion to put forth a reasonable conversation between Jesus and Gautama (Buddha), and his conversation has the fictional Gautama on the defense. But seriously, what do you expect from someone who has a concrete worldview whose religion is every bit about educating those of other religions that Christianity really is all about proclaiming that Jesus Christ is the supreme God, and that warning that Jesus really is the only path to God?
And why is bias all that shocking for so many? We all have it. No matter how hard we try to pull oursevles above it or to toss it aside so that others will hear us, we cannot shake it. The real questions that one needs to ask are this: Is the author being reasonable and is the author right?
Personally, I found this book to be insightful, even-handed and well written. Ravi strikes hard at several Buddhist inconsistencies and illogical fallices, but yet keeps the conversation above the fray without resorting to "name calling" or ad homs that degrade this conversation into rhetorical irrelevance. The tone is simple, conversational and polite, and is nothing like what other reviewers here have inferred
I am amazed at the reaction of several reviewers here (who are being intolerant and exclusive in their own right) who clearly do not have a clue what true Christianity entails. And should these critics truly be Buddhists, then they do little more than give their religion a black eye.

Birger Sandzen, the "American Van Gogh" in Color!!!.......2007-10-17
If you have been a Sandzen fan for a while, this book with its juicy color photos is what everyone has been craving. COLOR, COLOR, COLOR....every artist should have a look at just a few pages to get an idea of what it means to paint in color,...or with color. The artists palette is usually a unique handeling of color and Sandzen's pinks, oranges, greens and yellows are hypnotizing. If you are interested in Sandzen's printmaking, see my other review on his graphic works, but if you are looking for a very nice life overview of an under-rated artist,..give it a go!!!
Superb book about Birger Sandzen.......2005-03-17
Excellent book for the collector, art historian or art student interested in the "Van Gogh of America". As one of America's foremost buyers of Birger Sandzen paintings, I highly recommend this book. www.LawrenceBeebe.com
Gorgeous tribute to a Kansas teacher and artist..........2000-07-12
He would have wanted to be remembered most as a teacher and friend; he was that and more to those that were fortunate enough to have known him. Such was the life of the great Swedish artist Birger Sandzen.
In a glowing tribute to the man and his work, Emory Lindquist has managed to capture the essence of who he was and what he has meant to Kansas art. An absolutely beautiful account of his art and influence. Sandzen was a one of a kind visionary of the beauty that surrounds us in everyday life and nature. A first rate work by a learned historian, and obvious devotee, of Sandzen.
Book Description
"Charley Ellis has written a magnificent portrait, capturing the indomitable spirit of Joe Wilson and his instinctive understanding of the need for and commercial usefulness of a transforming imaging technology. Joe Wilson and his extraordinary team, which I had the good fortune to first meet in 1960, epitomized the wonderful observation of George Bernard Shaw who said, 'Some look at things that are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were and ask why not?'
Xerox and xerography are not only a part of our vocabulary, but part of our everyday life. Charley Ellis gives the reader a poignant understanding of just how this happened through the life, adventures, critical business decisions, and dreams of Joseph Wilson and a cadre of remarkable individuals.
This book will surely join the library of memorable biographies that capture the building of America into a risk-tolerant, technologically sophisticated, idea-oriented society that thrives by understanding what Charles Darwin really said:
'Survival will be neither to the strongest of the species, nor to the most intelligent, but to those most adaptable to change.'"
—Frederick Frank, Vice Chairman, Lehman Brothers Inc.
Customer Reviews:
Truth is more fantastic than fiction. .......2007-05-11
Joe Wilson would likely be the first to admit that many contributed to the creation of Xerox. But he was the glue that held everyone together. Without Wilson, adoption of the technology might have been delayed by decades. Computer printers would have remained impact devices for decades longer. The laser printer might not have seen the light of day until recently.
There are so many remarkable facets to this story, that if it were a work of fiction readers might criticize the plot for being too fantastic and contrived.
First, the technical inventor, Chester Carlson, was listed as one of the richest men in America in the late 1960s by Forbes Magazine. He wrote the magazine informing them that they ranked him too high because he had donated two-thirds of his fortune away anonymously in earlier years.
His mother died as he was entering his teen years and his father had tuberculosis. Chester had to work for a living as an adolescent. Despite this, he somehow graduated from Cal Tech during the Great Depression.
Second, when Wilson's company was looking for funding he sought financial partnerships with every important office equipment company in the United States, but was turned down in every instance.
Third, IBM declined to partner with Xerox in the formative years. They hired Arthur D. Little to do a nearly year-long study of the product potential which concluded that the market size was too small at only $200 million. Later, after Xerox was an obvious success, IBM told Wilson that it should be granted an exclusive license to compete so that Xerox would not run afoul of antitrust regulations.
Fourth, during an era when the company was a shinning success, Wilson's publicity-hungry lawyer permitted Life Magazine to prominently feature a story implying he (the lawyer) was the "man behind Xerox". While this infuriated his wife, Wilson seems to have been largely silient on the transgression.
Fifth, xerography was invented during the Great Depression, in an era that was risk averse. It was brought to commercial success by a lab in Columbus, Ohio and an modest company in upstate New York. While the cities were far from being technological backwaters, neither were they the putative leaders.
The story inspired me to start a Wiki on this book.
How Joe Wilson transformed Haloid into Xerox.......2007-03-23
This notable biography recounts the remarkable story of Joe Wilson, a shy entrepreneur who overcame tremendous technological and business challenges to develop an entirely new photographic process and create the Xerox Corporation. Wilson was a powerful but quiet leader who motivated employees, family members, business associates and his community to achieve the impossible. Charles D. Ellis presents a comprehensive portrait of the man and his times, highlighting the roles of luck and perseverance. He tells how Wilson built a revolutionary machine even before he had a market and, in that process, pioneered a new technology and transformed his grandfather's small company into Xerox. The story is slow at times, but we highly recommend Ellis's inspirational business profile to those who enjoy stories of legendary business leaders and the companies they built.
The making of the copying company.......2007-03-17
The author presents a very thorough book of the man who was an inventer and self made made who built a machine and built a company. Whats most interesting is his detail of the compromises and deals he made with other men and companies to make his dream happen.
Leadership must Have Soul.......2006-12-27
Joe Wilson led Xerox through more years of uninterrupted growth at a more rapid pace then achieved by any other company. This fact is sufficient motivation to read Charles Ellis' comprehensive and compelling story of Joe Wilson and the creation of Xerox. Most business aficionados think they know the story but this book will truly open your eyes and mind. Mr Ellis' thorough research and deft prose reveals the true leadership genius of Joe Wilson. The Xerox journey, from it's humble Haloid beginnings, through the twists and turns resulting in the introduction of the 914, reads like an adventure novel worthy of Eric Larson. The introduction of Joe Wilson to Chester Carlson, the inventor of Xerography, was just the beginning. The author provides countless examples of situations that could have derailed the success of Xerox.Examples include Homer Piper's invention of Haloid Record during the thirties. Without this milestone,Haloid would not have survived the depression and therefore Xerox would not have evolved. The author also explores how Xerox managed to avoid being acquired by the mega Corps.,once the potential of Xerox was understood.Tom Watson, IBM CEO, stated that failing to pursue the acquition of Xerox was the biggest regret of his career. It's almost a foregone conclusion that GE would have purchased Xerox if,at the time,it wasn't distracted by developing the technology for color TV.The true genius of Mr. Ellis'is his ability to bring Joe Wilson alive through the pages of this monumental work. Joe Wilson's leadership, vision, passion and creativity are a wonder to behold. His true commitment to customers, shareholders and employees are truly inspiring.Even with the technology, Xerox would never have been successful without Joe Wilson's commitment to R&D,his insight in developing his management team, his dedication to employee relations. The list could go on and on.Two other areas that are worthy of highlighting. First, the author explores Joe Wilson's dedication and unselfish service to improving the social welfare both in his community, country and globally. His undying commitment to diversity and the bold actions he initiated to bring the dream to a reality are inspiring and should serve as prime examples for present and future business leaders. Finally, the in depth profiles of all those VPs,managers, engineers, employees, suppliers, that actively and unselfishly shared Joe Wilson's vision and who turned it into a resounding success are truly a joy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has even a passing interest on what it takes to be a successful and compassionate leader in business.

Sample Caption: "Fortitude - We all want to be strong... we want to be swift and graceful and embody all the attributes the world seems to reward the most. Whatever we have, whatever we are, or no matter how tired or disillusioned we are, there is still an objective to be reached, a dream to be realized..."
