        Book Description

Secondary Metabolites in Soil Ecology focus on the role of bacterial, fungal and plant secondary metabolites in soil ecosystems. Our understanding of the biological function of secondary metabolites is surprisingly limited, considering our knowledge of their structural diversity and pharmaceutically relevant activities. The volume reviews functional aspects of secondary metabolite production, with a focus on interactions among soil organisms.

Topics such as truffle metabolites and burnt phenomenon, ecology of mycotoxins in soil, root exudates, and chemical interactions between Streptomyces and mycorrhiza fungi are treated. Further aspects are the role of microbial metabolites as quorum sensing signals, their role in protecting plants against pathogens and the effect of volatiles on soil invertebrates. Chapters describing techniques for the detection of antibiotics in soil and the application of metabolomics to rhizosphere research, which has advanced rapidly in recent years, complement the book.

            Description:
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula-virgata), a native of Eurasia, is a serious invasive weed of grasslands of the northern Great Plains of the U.S. and prairie provinces of Canada. Leafy spurge is very difficult to control with herbicides, insect biological control agents, and other cultural practices. Previous field investigations revealed pathogen-insect interactions on the roots of leafy spurge leading to mortality. In order to exploit this synergistic relationship as an effective biological control strategy, we undertook an exploration of Europe for soilborne fungi and rhizosphere bacteria on Euphorbia spp. growing in a wide variety of soils in different landscapes. All microbial cultures were screened for growth suppressive or disease potential on leafy spurge plants or callus tissue. Study objectives were to determine relationships of some edaphic factors and host plant conditions with biological control activity, and to screen rhizobacteria isolated from Euphorbia spp. for traits that might contribute to suppression of leafy spurge growth. The most virulent soilborne fungal strains of Fusarium and Rhizoctonia species, based on greenhouse pathogenicity tests, were isolated from roots of Euphorbia spp. with insect feeding damage. High proportions (>50%) of rhizobacteria were classified as deleterious rhizobacteria (DRB) using a callus tissue bioassay. Euphorbia spp. at sites with high DRB numbers displayed severe fungal disease symptoms and supported insect infestations. Selected soil properties were not correlated with potential biocontrol activity of microbes on leafy spurge; however, insect presence and disease ratings were associated with incidence of growth-suppressive microbes. Certain physiological traits (i.e., exopolysaccharides and hydrogen cyanide production) were good indicators of deleterious activity of rhizobacteria. Our study illustrates that the most effective condition for inducing disease and subsequent mortality of leafy spurge includes a synergism between plant-associated microorganisms and root-damaging insects. Furthermore, the results are valuable for identifying sites for collecting soilborne microorganisms on weeds in their native range for evaluation as biocontrol agents in their invasive range.

              Book Description

A meticulously researched and penetrating analysis of the Cold War, and the man who ended it. Peter Schweizer delves into the origins of Ronald Reagan’s vision of America, and documents his consistent, aggressive belief in confronting the Soviet Union diplomatically, economically, and militarily.

Ronald Reagan is often dismissed as an “amiable dunce,” a genial actor who simply mouthed whatever slogans his right-wing puppet masters put in front of him. Reagan’s War brilliantly overturns this myth. Drawing on private diaries dating from Reagan’s days as an actor and extending through his presidency, Peter Schweizer, a well-known historian of the Cold War, shows that Reagan’s fervent anticommunism marked every era of his life and was the driving force behind his policies as president.

Schweizer explores Reagan’s involvement with anticommunist liberals in Hollywood and his role as a secret informer for the FBI. Reagan’s outspoken criticism of d?tente in the late 1960s and his forceful advocacy for the overthrow of the USSR drew the attention of Soviet officials, who began a KGB file on him when he was still governor of California. By the time he was elected president, they viewed him as a serious threat to their interests. Reagan’s War shows just how right they were, presenting compelling evidence that Reagan personally mapped out and directed a campaign to bankrupt the Soviet Union and wage an economic and political war against Moscow.

In telling the story of Reagan’s ultimate triumph, Schweizer also brings to light dozens of previously unknown facts about the Cold War, based on secret documents obtained from archives in Russia, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and the United States. Among his many startling revelations are Kissinger’s private deals with Soviet leaders that protected his own political viability while allowing the Soviets to pursue their goals within their own sphere; a North Korean and East German plot to assassinate Reagan in 1983; Reagan’s secret funding of Solidarity in Poland; and the behind-the-scenes support Soviets and East Germans provided for European and American peace movements, as well as their clandestine contacts with U.S. government officials.

A fresh, often startling look at Ronald Reagan and his central role in winning the war for global dominance in the 1980s, Reagan’s War is a major work of twentieth-century history.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-documented book.......2007-07-23

I owned this book for 2 years before finally deciding to read it. Why? Because I thought it would be a bit boring. Boy was I wrong.

Using our adversaries' own words through recently-released Soviet archives, etc., Schweizer's work is so thorough that the book reads almost like a spy novel. If you're a red-blooded American you'll smile and cheer as you read the account of one of America's great patriots and his life-long stand against the tyranny of communism.

From Hollywood to Moscow, President Reagan's stand for freedom is inspiring. Highly entertaining and historically educational, I recommend this book to all.

              5 out of 5 stars A must-read for college students.......2007-04-18

I just finished this excellent book by Peter Schweizer about Ronald Reagan's battle with communists from his Hollywood days until the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was an excellent read, and I HIGHLY recommend it to general readers.

When your leftist professors tell you that he was a dunce, or that the Soviets were not a real threat, this book will provide you with the intellectual ammo to take them on.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty impressive, well-researched.......2006-07-10

Overall, I was fairly impressed with this book. Although the book obviously carries a bias, it never reaches the point of annoying, and all of the major pieces are impeccably researched and backed with objective facts.

Overall, a very clear picture of Reagan's life, and a testament to the fact that you don't have to be able to perform analytical calculus proofs to understand basic underlying economic theories.

My only criticism is that the author tends to gloss over the unfavorable aspects of Reagan's life/presidency. Other people may point out that the book is supposed to be about Reagan's "war" on communism - however, many other unrelated pieces of Reagan's life are in the book.

Good read - I immediately purchased it after one read of the library's copy.

              5 out of 5 stars Stirring, Emboldening.......2006-07-06

I never got to read the book, but I did see the film, and it was, in a word, stirring. It is chock-full of de-classified information and runs seamlessly and equally as spiritedly. It is a remarkable, remarkable account of the utter change that can be brought about by one man's voice; if one never understood clearly that ONE could be the majority, certainly the account of this man's war prove it.
A President was recorded here as saying that he was "...simply an uncomfortable man to be around." Well, he ought to have been. In the film, he ceaselessly said the things that cut straight through the thick fog and pretense of self-serving self-deception everyone so wished to be left underneath. For many years, he worked behind the scenes- before it ever became a mainstream political "hotbutton" issue- unbeknownst to him that he would someday crest as the singular, polarizing, mobilizing voice that stood resolutely in the face of evil and won. He was an uncomfortable man to be around because he needed to do what was right, no matter what the cost; many did not want to hear him, nor would they, but years of persistence paid off. A man of such integrity, as shown in the film, could stand up and denounce the horrors and the carnage of Communist U.S.S.R., and all of what was behind those realities-what it stood for: strong-arm atheistic "insanity".

Was he a politician? No, I don't think he was. I really believe he was simply an average man who was given an opportunity to do what was needed because Someone in the heavens up there knew that he'd would swing for the fences if he stood up to bat.
He was a real man who endured through much that many of us today - being rejected as an actor by Hollywood; relegated to a position on a Saturday morning television broadcast of cheap western films with a fractive audience, which was summarily cancelled - may not have been able to endure without crumbling -and kept on his course- leaning on doing what was right. This man endured so much without his spirit being broken.

The truths outlined in this book really put all the worthless garbage that is idolized in society today- materialism, sex, etc., - right where it belongs- in the dumpster. You forget such things in the face of the glory of righteousness unfurled. Its enough to put today's men who complain about being sent to war to shame. We see here that,
"Evil is powerless when the good are unafraid."
He was a man of his word, as noted by the KGB. It is incredible, too, that he hadn't been to any kind of great ivy league schooling-which would have certainly qualified him in the opinion of many- and yet through good works and good will, was able to cripple and defeat this Communist giant, even with the fact that on his entrance, it was a losing battle. The power and fierceness of the Soviet bully the world feared, and would rather have made peace with than confront, Reagan would have none of.

Like I said earlier, it is chock full of seamless, meaty realities. I'm sure the book was just as good if not better. What a wonderful account of one of the only things the world needs *more* of today: character. This is what the soul really craves. Again, the book is usually said to be better, so: two thumbs up - and five stars - all the way.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating history of a great man.......2006-07-05

Peter Schweizer is getting into the game early, one of several biographers compiling the history of one of the greatest heroes of the 20th century, while the memories are still fresh.

To those who knew better, the Soviet Union was doomed to collapse, but it was only a matter of time as to when, and how many millions would suffer in the process as its iron fist rusted away. At a time when America seemed to decline, a timely election put a vibrant, critical force in power to hasten the Soviet demise. Reagan was no great genius, but provided the much needed energy to revitalize what was truly great: the American spirit, and to embolded brave leaders in other parts of the world, most especially Lech Walesa and Pope John Paul II (a future saint, surely to be remembered as John Paul the Great.)

Of course, Reagan wasn't perfect, and the book glosses over or ignores some of his major failures and faults, like the deficit spending, the lack of guidance for a post-Soviet Afghanistan, Iran-Contra, and Sandra Day O'Connor.

In the image-conscious world of 1970s Beverly Hills, 11-year-old Lori knows she's different. Instead of trading clothes and dreaming of teen idols like most of her pre-adolescent friends, Lori prefers reading books, writing in her journal and making up her own creative homework assignments. Chronically disapproving of her parents' shallow lifestyle, she challenges their authority and chafes under their constant demands to curb her frank opinions and act more "ladylike." Feeling as though she has lost control over her rapidly changing world, Lori focuses all her concentration on one subject: dieting. Her life narrows to a single goal--to be "...the thinnest eleven year old on the entire planet." But once she achieves her "stick figure," Lori really sees herself for the first time in a restaurant bathroom mirror and decides then and there to bring herself back from the brink of starvation.

Stick Figure is a surprisingly upbeat memoir, mainly due to Gottlieb's descriptions of her upper-crust parents: "Mom and I usually don't like the same movies. For example, she didn't like my favorite movie, Star Wars, probably because no one goes shopping...." But despite the sly humor, Lori comes to a sobering conclusion that is, sadly, still relevant today: "...you can be too thin and not even know it, because you spend so much time listening to everyone talk about how ladies are supposed to diet, and how something's wrong with you if you aren't worried about being thin, too." Culled from Gottlieb's pre-teen diaries, Stick Figure is a wry and engaging observation of an eating disorder and the society that contributed to it. --Jennifer Hubert

              Book Description

"I wish to be the thinnest girl at school, or maybe even the thinnest eleven-year-old on the entire planet," confides Lori Gottlieb to her diary. "I mean, what are girls supposed to wish for, other than being thin?"

For a girl growing up in Beverly Hills in 1978, the motto "You can never be too rich or too thin" is writ large. Precocious Lori learns her lessons well, so when she's told that "real women don't eat dessert" and "no one could ever like a girl who has thunder thighs," she decides to become a paragon of dieting. Soon Lori has become the "stick figure" she's longed to resemble. But then what? Stick Figure takes the reader on a gripping journey, as Lori struggles to reclaim both her body and her spirit.

By turns painful and wry, Lori's efforts to reconcile the conflicting messages society sends women ring as true today as when she first recorded these impressions. "One diet book says that if you drink three full glasses of water one hour before every meal to fill yourself up, you'll lose a pound a day. Another book says that once you start losing weight, everyone will ask, 'How did you do it?' but you shouldn't tell them because it's 'your little secret.' Then right above that part it says, 'New York Times bestseller.' Some secret."

With an edgy wit and keenly observant eye, Stick Figure delivers an engrossing glimpse into the mind of a girl in transition to adulthood. This raw, no-holds-barred account is a powerful cautionary tale about the dangers of living up to society's expectations.

              4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-08-29

This book is a very easy read and is enjoyable. However, one year does seem unrealistic for a girl to go into treatment and recover from an eating disorder and then never really think about it or relapse for the rest of her life. But it was a good story.

              3 out of 5 stars Meh.......2007-08-07

I've read a lot of books about eating disorders and people with them, and this is one of my least favorites.
While it does show how a young girl goes from complete innocence to being painfully aware of her body, and how damaging it is to be surrounded by women who constantly obsess over their own weight, it doesn't really delve any further than that. It doesn't get into the psychological factors or the treatment of eating disorders, and Lori seems to magically "get over" her problem.
For someone between the ages of 10 and 14, it's probably a helpful though triggering book. However, for someone who has struggled with and come out of the other side of an eating disorder, it's less than incredible.

This book was marketed as the journal of an 11 year old girl with anorexia. After reading this book, and all the clever little hidden meanings, I very much doubt this was written by an 11 year old. To me it came across as an adult attempting to write like a precocious 11 year old. Some of the events in it are just too ridiculous to even imagine could be true - the mother pulls out a script in order to remember to say "I understand your need for control." - PLEASE. In addition, this whole novel (and that's what I believe it is) belittles the seriousness of anorexia. My sister has had anorexia for 25 years and is a nutritionist who works exclusively with anorexic girls. An anorexic cannot just suddenly one day decide to start eating again and become cured. That is absolutely ridiculous. It is a long, slow process with many set-backs and disappointments. Furthermore, her description of her treatment rings completely false. Did the author ever actually have anorexia? I sincerely doubt it. In my opinion, this author has manipulated the public in order to profit both personally and financially. I feel ripped off.

              4 out of 5 stars Stick Figure.......2006-11-30

Here stands a girl named Lori, 11 years old with a disease called anorexia. Her mother eats on diets; here friends eat on diets; and every girl at her school are on diets except for her. Her mother reads all of these books on diets and is always telling her, "Save the dessert for your father and brother. You don't need all of this food." And of course this poor little girl kept wondering why. A little while later her family went over to some relative's house to have nice meal with them. Lori sat next to her cousin Kate. Lori thought Kate's legs were so skinny and wondered how Kate kept her nice figure. Then Lori looked down at her legs; she thought, boy they look humongous. They are so wide and fat. Then she looked how much food Kate took on her plate; there was barely anything. Lori then she looked at hers; there was so much. After that Lori started not eating breakfast and saying that she didn't feel like eating. It started growing in to a bigger deal with her parents about her not eating. Lori had lost so much weight over the past couple months, so her mother started getting concerned so she took Lori to the doctor. She had lost at least two pounds in just a week or two. After telling the doctor that she wasn't eating breakfast and starting not to eat much of anything, he wanted to see her the next week. When Lori came in the next week she had lost even more weight. That's when Lori's doctor said she needed to talk to a counselor about what was going on. And boy, Lori wasn't happy about that. The first day of going to see her new consoler was weird. He asked her to draw a picture of herself and how she thinks she looks and then to draw another picture what she wants to look like. Lori drew a stick figure. Then after she drew those pictures Lori played chess with her counselor. Just plain old chess. Lori started buying diet books and reading how many calories were in food because she thought she was so fat. Then she started doing laps in the night to burn calories and then foot lifts. After a couple of weeks Lori's family, doctor and counselor thought it would be best if she was to be hospitalized. She had to be watched when eating her food and had to eat 75% of her food, otherwise she would have to have a tube down her throat to feed her if she didn't. She had her life at a risk. Would Maria be in the hospital the rest of her life? Would she start eating and get out of the hospital and recover? Or would she die in the hospital because she wouldn't eat anything? If you want to know read the book and find out!
I thought the authors writing style was okay. It was in a journal form and the book showed how much she was going through. She kept explaining how she was feeling in the moment. But one thing was that the book wasn't very descriptive. It would tell some things descriptively but not that many.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was so attaching. You wanted to know what was going to happen next. The chapters aren't very long so you can read quite a bit in just a half hour. I really recommend reading this book. It teaches you a lesson that being thin isn't that good, and going on diets can be dangerous. I hope you read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Stick Figure: A Diary Of My Former Self.......2006-11-24

Lori Gottlieb is a girl who thinks that no one understands her; and she's right. Whenever Lori's mother has friends over, her big brother David would wow the grown ups with his intelligence and humor. But then when Lori would try to say something she was thinking, the friends would just say, "Oh she's such a unique girl, isn't she?" Lori didn't get what was so unique about her. After that, she learned not to say anything she thought, or to say anything at all from the grown ups around her. Just to be invisible.
Another thing she didn't get was how little women ate. Her mother would always dump everything that was on her plate onto either her father's or David's plate. Lori noticed how she ate like `the men in the house' do, while her mother read magazines about losing weight that had skinny models and `beautiful' people. Lori was a naturally thin girl; but after her mother always asking why Lori wasn't like the girls in the soap operas she watched;her learning about no guy liking `thunder thighs'; or that you can never be `too rich or too thin', Lori started to read diet books and making herself a diet.
The only thing she wished was to be the skinniest person on earth. Even though Lori did not understand why each book said silly things like, "drink three full glasses of water before a meal so then you won't be so hungry", she decided to diet like a woman. At first she was very dizzy from not eating anything, but she got used to it. She started counting the calories in her head of everything she inhaled and took a bite of like crazy; and she became more and more skinny: just what she wanted.
Her parents did not like the idea of her eating eight glasses of water and only eating two-hundred and fifty calories a day, so they got her a shrink named Dr. Gold that drove Lori crazy because "he was always nodding his head at everything I said even if it wasn't necessary". He and Lori's doctor, Dr. Katz would always tell her that she is too skinny and needs to eat. Lori thought they were just saying that because her family put them up to it, so she kept doing the diet because she didn't want to be fat anymore. She kept losing weight, and Dr. Katz kept thinking of ways to make her eat more, but each one didn't work. Finally, Lori's family had an "emergency meeting" at Dr. Gold's office and her mom, dad, and brother agreed to send Lori to the hospital, even though she did not understand why.
In the hospital, she met a couple people who she became close to such as Nora, another sick girl down the hall; and Elizabeth, a nurse that cared about her(finally, someone who seems to). This book is filled with the thoughts of an eleven year old girl who is oblivious to the fact that the women in magazines are not real, and she is confused by the country around her and the definition of the word "skinny".
This book has a great resolution because you actually feel like you're finishing this book with a purpose and a moral. At first to me the book was very slow and boring and I thought I was going to never finish it. Then when things started moving, I was hooked. I liked reading this book from the character's point of view because you knew what she was thinking, and you understood why she was anorexic. If this book wasn't written in first person, you'd think the whole story was just about a little girl who was anorexic because no one understood her. But it is more than that, because you can actually get what she is talking about, and how some people never even hear of anorexia when they're doing it to themselves. Some people don't even know what they're doing, and Lori didn't. She just wanted to be skinny. I think it's fascinating that Lori Gottlieb is a real woman, and it actually happened to her and she made the character someone you could relate to. This book really opened my eyes as you can see, and I hope that you enjoy it if you read it as well. I think everyone should read this book to understand why some people are anorexic or bulimic; not because they're crazy, but because of the people around them. If you really think about it, it's actually our fault that people are anorexic or bulimic because it is a fight for everyone to be the best, or the most beautiful, or the wealthiest; and for some stupid reason in America, beautiful=skinny.

                  Book Description

With her latest book, A Treasury of Magical Knitting, Cat Bordhi introduces knitters of all levels to the warm welcome of a simple and mysterious dimension of knitting. Here you will find thirty-three projects, including scarves with one side and one edge, knitted in one fell swoop, like the Fringed Cedar Bark Scarf or the Mercurial Moebius Wraps. . . graceful headwear, like the Beaded Tresses Hat. . . felted footwear both practical and functional, like Sophie's Mermaid Feet . . . the Lost Trail Cape with its four-way convertible collar . . . and the Seven Socklings Necklace.

Cat, who is known for her clear and comprehensive instructions both as a workshop teacher and as the author of the best-selling Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles, has taken outdone herself in this full-color, 112 page coffee table quality book. Instructions for the simple technique are illustrated with close-up photos showing every move, almost like a slow motion movie, accompanied by clear descriptions so that learners of all kinds will find it easy to get started.

This author of novels (Treasure Forest, first of The Forest Inside trilogy, recently won the Nautilus Award for Young Adult Fiction) and knitting books blends the art of fine story-telling with instruction. In her own words:

"Following the unfolding path of a novel is astonishingly similar to following the unfurling flow of a knitting book. Both ask me to simply show up, keyboard or needles in hand, all my senses alert and willing to welcome what wants to meet me. Sometimes I think that it is because I am tame, and so the beautiful creations that populate both novels and knitting books come nibble the grass near my feet. I do not invent any of it. I simply get to be where it is, experiencing it fully so I can share it with you. And if you recognize it, if it sparks something in you, it is because it lives in you too."

Cat Bordhi's book on the moebius loop is a bit of a one-trick pony, but you gotta admit, it's a really good trick. The patterns are the same thing over & over again in different gauges, but the cast-on technique is clearly explained & was quite easy to pick up. This one's a good addition to the knitting library.

Cat writes engagingly about the mobius and the creative process she experienced in channeling the projects in the book. I appreciated her encouragement along the way with guidance like "If something goes wrong, rejoice and dive in to see what treasures are revealed" and "Find something to do more or less of and see what happens" and best of all, "Have at it". Sure, if you stick to her patterns you'll have great projects, but if you stick to her advice to engage your creative muse you'll also have the satisfaction of a one-of-a-kind reflection of you. One caution with this as well as any other knitting book: do an internet search for errata before you start any project.

Cat's book will have you thinking about knitting in an entirely different way than you've ever thought of it before! You'll certainly find something in here to nudge your creativity and be thinking of doing many new things with your needles and yarn. The book is a special memory for me after having a mobius workshop with her. She shares both her personality as well as her love of the craft of knitting in the book. It is a treasury you will treasure because of the clear instructions and explanations.

If you are looking for something new in your knitting projects - buy this book. I am addicted to knitting mobious objects after reading this book. The cast-on method is a bit tricky but just follow her clearly written directions and you can do it. I love the projects in this book and the photgraphs that demostrate them. It helps to catch Cat Bordhi on The Knitty Gritty show if you want some extra help figuring this out.

I have been a knitter for over 40 years and am adept at reading patterns. This particular book was written assuming people had taken her class. If you haven't the insturctions are skimpy at best. I was very disappointed. I tried to email her at her email from the book and received no response.

                  Book Description

Readers of the first book in this two-volume series (A Treasury of Magical Knitting) have fallen in love with the new world of Magical Knitting, a dimension so simple yet so captivating that one could spend a year exploring the huge variety of designs which Cat offers. Beginning with Cat's unique Moebius Cast-On, which is so easy that she usually demonstrates it in workshops behind her back while twirling slowly around on one foot, the reader first learns to knit a Moebius band, or scarf. This is the magic key that opens the way to all the other designs. The Second Treasury includes felted baskets (with no inside or outside!), felted fringed bowls, felted and unfelted sling bags, six different felted cat beds (one with paws and a tail!), and the trifold designs, including a knitter's bowl with pockets for tools and a place to keep working yarn away from playful felines. The Felted Needle Cozies, colorful, highly textured sheaths to hold straight needles, and the felted wallets are both excellent patterns for beginners and first-time felters. The book includes detailed information on felting, designing, and yarn substitutions.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Moebius Worlds.......2007-08-23

I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend. I immediately knew I wanted to make the marvelous moebius scarf pictured in the book. Cat's photographic directions on how to do the magical cast-on were excellent, and I managed to make a scarf. It finished with an applied i-cord edging, which I had never done before, but once again, her photographs made the directions very clear. I've made 3 of these scarves and they are quite fascinating.
I'm now ready to attempt some of the wonderful baskets that she features in the book. I want to see how some of them would work up in self striping yarn. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something a bit different.

                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent fun!.......2007-07-21

Although I find the projects in the first book more interesting, there are enough in this one to justify buying it - especially the bowls and cat beds. The Mobius Cast on pages are very clear, as are the instructions for Round One. I used her suggestion of a smaller needle on the left side and found my stitches slipping quite nicely on my Denise cords. No need to go out and buy more circs. Hurray! However the suggestion for using two circs on the body of the bowl was not necessary as I used a 16 inch and then double pointeds at the ending.
I am having great fun using up partial balls and adding eyelash and ribbon yarn as fun striping and edging. Also I had been wanting to learn the I-cord bind off for a while. Cat's instructions are definitely easy to follow. This is a book for adventurous knitters unless you have worked the first book so are familiar with mobius knitting.

                  1 out of 5 stars emperor's new clothes.......2007-02-09

I paid nearly $30 for this book and wish I'd spent it on something more worthwhile. The Moebius cast-on is nothing more than a provisional cast-on done on a looped circular needle. While the introductory project, a Moebius scarf, drapes nicely, it's hardly worth a $30 book just for the casting-on method. The rest of the designs are unattractive. I couldn't care less if the strap on a bag is twisted. Ny cats would undoubtedly turn up their noses at a knitted bed (no matter how many hours I'd spent on it). And unless I'm missing something in the photos, anything felted won't show whether it's been knit by the moebius cast on or simply begun as a strip conventionally cast on and off, given a half-twist and joined at the ends, and the long side's stitches picked up again. I think we have something of a boondoggle here.

                  5 out of 5 stars Mobius rocks.......2007-01-07

I am a new knitter. After taking a class on the Mobius method, and getting into Cat Bordhi's fun and quirky head, it will be very boring for me to pick-up any of my other started projects. I have this and the first book, and was able to create many quick christmas presents that were a hit. Cat has found many ways that have simplified so many of the knitting methods, I am now able to transfer her methods to other knitting book patterns that I was afraid to try. I highly recommend trying these 2 books, you won't believe how how fun and strange it is, and knitting will never be the same for you.

read some of the reviews and I seem to hear the same things over and over from women...

I am the parent the kids go to etc etc, I am the one being abused...

Women have a bottomless pit when it comes to self pity.

This book will help those dads in situations where the mother is completely unaware of her very bad behavior.

I have seen mothers "steal" the kids and relocate but cry to me that the "dad" doesn't see his kids.

Or the mother bringing a new boyfriend at every mutual kids event completely obvious of the repercussions on the.

Or the mother changing medical appointments becasue the father is not relevant, in her mind - but complain if he doesn't show up at the makeup

So, dads, buy this book. Mothers alienating their exs is a epidemic.

Raise your vioce, fight for your kids... record and document all bad behavior...join a mens right group.

Do NOT run away and let these bad mothers get away with this.

Dr. Darnall has provided a rock solid foundation for the most important aspect of the Parental Alienation Syndrome: A detailed, clear, psychological definition of an ailment so pervasive and ill-defined that many educated professionals disregard the term as a mere hot-button topic instead of what it really is - Abuse.

What is most valuable to the reader is that Dr. Darnall provides a full spectrum view of this syndrome by describing in precise detail THREE categorical definitions of parental alienation.

This is extremely important. For example, if the definition of murder were to kill a living thing, then anyone seen swatting a mosquito would be justifiably incarcerated.

Every parent, at one point or another, can be "guilty" of "parental alienation" whether divorced -- or married. Dr. Darnall explains this first category with utter compassion for the human condition. Any critical word or gesture within earshot of a child could be interpretted as such, but Dr. Darnall explains what could cause such action and what the parent can do about it.

The second category provides insight into how easy it could be to make a habit of such alienating tactics if gone unchecked - and more importantly, what to do about it.

Perhaps the most valuable part of the book reflects my own personal experience since I have been abused by what Dr Darnall defines as the "Obsessed Parental Alienator" for seven years. It is my conviction that Dr. Darnall's diagnosis of this ailment will be listed in the noted psychological reference manual, DSM IV, providing practitioners a means to correctly diagnose and treat their patients.

Additionally, it will provide to all victims and their families a path toward healing since it is almost impossible to heal without knowing the name of what is causing such harm.

Please read this book. Please recommend it. The power to abuse children is negated if everyone possesses the information in Divorce Causualties.

This book gives lots of senarios that will probably sound familiar. The author doesn't go into solutions about the "other parent" alienating children. This is a great book if you are having trouble with your own emotions and putting your own feelings in front of the childrens best interests. It is a Alienation 101 type of book. If you have read numerous books and articles about how alienation works and why it happens and you can rise above it then this book is probably not for you. Also, if you don't think you have contributed to at least minor alienation or counteralienation then it's probably a good idea to read this book but with a very open mind. This book is a good resource to grasp the idea of alienation and to take a good look at your own actions. I would then recommend reading Divorce Poison by Dr. Richard Warshak. It offers proactive ways of actually protecting your children from alienation that you don't have control over. i.e. your ex spouse, grandparents, etc.

I actually have a better time reading anything if it has some sort of practical work related to the reading. I enjoyed Dr. Darnall's book because it offers this treat. It is a treat in that you will be surprised at your abilities, or lack thereof, to grasp important information and determine better how to use it.
In this book, Divorce Casualties,it opens your practical mind to the depth, height, breadth and width of the subject--how to protect your spouse's , children's and your relationship with each other while going through this, the toughest of times.
I have my own sick story, but my being the targeted parent just got more insight because I am learning from this book some things that I did not think were a hazard to my children--that I am responsible for. The execises in the book helped me open that door upstairs that used to only be opened by me. Now, I have a practical list of tips to check myself on when I am with my children, thus, I am able to share my time more effectively with them, and be the strong, loving parent they need.
After all, they are the most precious things in our lives. Are they not? If we are not thinking THAT from the opening and the closing of this book, then it will be a waste of our time to read it. You must be able and willing to admit your role in the subject of this book, and, therefore, be willing to make needed changes.
It is a great thing to have read this book.

                        Book Description

In 1904, having known each other for only three months, a young woman named Nora Barnacle and a not yet famous writer named James Joyce left Ireland together for Europe -- unwed. So began a deep and complex partnership, and eventually a marriage, which endured for thirty-seven years. This is the true story of Nora, the woman who, transformed by Joyce's imagination, became Molly Bloom, arguably the most famous female character in twentieth-century literature. It is also the story of Ireland, a social history encapsulated in the vivid recreation of Joyce and his small Irish entourage abroad. Ultimately it is the portrait of a relationship -- of Nora's complicated, committed, and at times shocking relationship with a hardworking, hard drinking genius and with his work. In NORA: THE REAL LIFE OF MOLLY BLOOM, the award-winning biographer Brenda Maddox has given us a powerful new lens through which to see both James Joyce and the woman who was in turn his inspiration and his salvation.

This is the perfect companion to Richard Ellmans bio of JJ. I first read it when it came out a few years ago and I found it to be a good "other side of the story". Much has been made of Joyce's letters to his wife and of her being the model for Molly Bloom. He must have been a happy man if that was the case. She was all woman.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful and compelling look into a life and a marriage.......2003-01-04

The story of Nora and James Joyce's unconventional relationship and how it shaped the writings of one of history's most controversial authors. This book is nothing short of riveting, both in terms of the story it is telling and the way it is told. It explores the influence Nora held over Joyce in his life and his writing and gives countless examples of how he used the experiences of those around him in his books. More than anything, this is the story of a woman struggling to hold her life and her family together in the face of hardship after hardship. A truly incredible read that I couldn't put down until the last page - I even read the bibliography!

I'm a life long Joyce fan and I have to admit that I enjoyed this life of Jim's wife (only she could call him Jim!) Nora even more than I did the three volume Ellman biography of Joyce himself. In fact, Joyce fans will probably learn more about Joyce's writing by reading about his wife than about him. This is one of the most outstanding biographies I have ever read -- it's fascinating to learn how Joyce used Nora's every utterance somewhere in his works even though she herself never read Ulysses.

                        Book Description

James Joyce's Dublin Houses describes in detail the many houses in Dublin where the Joyce family lived. It reflects on the positive effect that the constant moving had on the young James Joyce, in providing him with an intimate knowledge of the city that was to become such an important backdrop to his work. It also provides detailed information for the reader on how to get to the various places. It concentrates on the houses where the Joyce family lived, also pinpointing the haunts of his characters, Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus.

Vivien Igoe, an expert on Joyce, explains the background and origins of both Joyce and Nora Barnacle, who inspired the principal female character in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. There is also information on where Joyce stayed on his return visits to Dublin in later life.

While the book will be of interest to Joycean pilgrims and students of Anglo-Irish literature alike, it is also aimed at the general reader to provide a useful interpretative aid to Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

This handsome vademecum fits the hand, pleases the eye, and informs the mind of the Joycean pilgrim searching not along the streets for Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom, the denizens of Nighttown or the cast from "Wandering Rocks"-- but their engenderer in his native habitat. This parallels not only the ubiquitous electronic and print guidebooks for walkers recreating Bloom's steps, but academic maps for the fictional counterpart, the topographical dictionary by Ian Gunn & Clive Hart, "James Joyce's Dublin," (Thames & Hudson, 2004). Igoe's title speaks for itself.

Igoe, a Joyce scholar and former curator at the Sandymount museum, gives requisite passages from Joyce's fiction, period and recent illustrations, and comprehensive but not mind-numbing biographical details that guide armchair visitors as well as direct real tourists. Neil Hyslop's handsome, readable, and hand-lettered maps recall the elegant ones that used to grace endpapers of historical hardcovers. They are easy to consult, spare enough not to be cluttered with extraneous information, and large enough to be accurate and not merely decorative.

A new version expanded to 208 pp. (shown here, Lilliput Pr.) appeared in June 2007 but I haven't seen it, nor is it listed for sale on Amazon US. I review the 1997 version; I judge that the basics in the older edition should remain the same. Perhaps URLs & updated transport data are added for the itinerary supplement that carefully leads you around by bus to Joyce's Dublin houses, each residence given a few pages per biographically organized chapter, and their environs.
