Book Description

"Some new mushroomers will find this single volume all the library they need to harvest and enjoy wild mushrooms for the table."

Mushroom the Journal

"The publication is of excellent quality and print, well edited, authoritative, and provides an excellent introduction to edible and poisonous wild mushrooms."

Mycologia

Unusual shapes and colors make many mushrooms alluring to the eye, while the exotic flavors and textures of edible mushrooms are a gourmet delicacy for the palate. Yet many people never venture beyond the supermarket offerings, fearing that all other mushrooms are poisonous.

With amateur mushroom hunters especially in mind, David Fischer and Alan Bessette have prepared Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America. This field guide presents more than 100 species of the most delicious mushrooms, along with detailed information on how to find, gather, store, and prepare them for the table. More than 70 savory recipes, ranging from soups and salads to casseroles, canapes, quiches, and even a dessert, are included.

Throughout, the authors constantly emphasize the need for correct identification of species for safe eating. Each species is described in detailed, nontechnical language, accompanied by a list of key identifying characteristics that reliably rule out all but the target species. Superb color photographs also aid in identification. Poisonous "lookalikes" are described and illustrated, and the authors also assess the risks of allergic or idiosyncratic reactions to edible species and the possibilities of chemical or bacterial contamination.

Lovely photographs, excellent identity descriptions, tons of useful information and I love the recipes -- plan to make every one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Novice Edible Mushroom Hunter.......2005-03-25

This is a concise easy to use book for people just starting to
hunt for edible mushrooms. It concentrates extensively on the edibles, and look alike poisonous. By eliminating 1000s of other mushrooms it is great for identifying the finest edibles. It makes a great companion to a more all encompassing publication. The recipes I've tried were good also.

2 out of 5 stars Limited scope, horrible recipes........2004-01-07

I bought this book many years ago as the first of what is now a fairly large collection on the subject. As the title indicates, it concentrates on the EDIBLE fungi, so the reviewer who was dissappointed because he/she could ID only one of the 13 mushrooms he/she found has unfair expectations out of the scope of this work. That said, only the most popular edibles seem to be listed here, and variants on those species are not covered in much depth. It's ok for those who just want to be able to distinguish a golden chanterelle from a jack-o-lantern, or a morel from a thimble-cap so they can safely gather some edibles. The worst thing about this book, however, is it's unfortunate recipes. Every single recipe I've tried from it completely sucks. Either the cooking method is inappropriate to that particular mushroom (turning delicate specimins to mush, for instance, or inundating absorptive ones with oil), or strong flavors from other ingredients overwhelm the sometimes subtle flavors of the mushrooms themselves. I get much better results by trusting my cooking intuition and experimenting than I do by following these recipes.

2 out of 5 stars more confused than before.......2003-08-19

I came to US from Europe several years ago. It was a family tradition to go pick wild mushrooms every fall during my childhood years. So when I moved to Virginia countryside I decided I will try and revive the mushroom picking tradition in my new country. I started with a book to help me identify all those different, unfamiliar species of mushrooms. So I bought the "Edible Wild Mushroom Guide". I went to the woods and picked a bunch of different mushrooms - each one was different and tried to use the Guide to identify them . Out of about 14 visibly different species of mushrooms that I picked - the guide gave positive ID on ONE (!) mushroom only. Other 13 were not even included in the book. I can't testify to the quality of recepie part of the book - I was somewhat reluctant to cook things I can not identify!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2002-11-15

For a "first" book on wild mushrooms I found this one to be very good. The pictures show the top, bottom, stems, colors and different parts of each mushroom. There are "warnings" on those that are ediable, but make some people sick, and the NO-NO"s are equally shown and written about. We're just new at this, and for a "starter" book this was just the ticket.

                    Book Description

This memoir ranges far beyond anything else written about these events. Fennell is a keen observer and forceful commentator on virtually every aspect of life as a prisoner and the system under which he is confined. And he goes well beyond that. His interests seem to be limitless and lead him to observations and commentary on just about every facet of the world in which he finds himself. His descriptions and opinions encompass: climate, terrain, flora, fauna, geological history, prevailing winds, the solar system, indigenous people, social mores, government and commercial structures, religion, politics, and, inevitably, the inhumane treatment of prisoners in England's penal system. His essay could be likened to Alexis de Tocqueville's 1830s report on the United States.

5 out of 5 stars Hand Bookbinding: A Manual of Instruction - from a third generation printer.......2007-02-26

Even for a 50+ year old, third generation publisher and printer, this publication enlightened even myself on the lost art of handmaking and restoring books. Very helpful for the novice, or for the collector of fine books - to be learned and unes as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on bookbinding!.......2007-02-20

This book doesn't have flashy pictures, but it teaches you how to bind your own books. The instructions are detailed, the process is well explained and it worked great for me.

I have also bought another book on bookbinding (or so I thought) - Book Arts: Beautiful Bindings for Handmade Books by Mary Kaye Seckler. This one is the exact opposite of the previous - flashy pictures, but absolutely useless.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Source Of Information.......2007-01-25

Less "flashy" than some titles out there but extremely substantive. A comprehensive guide that explains and explores its subject matter from every angle.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the Best Hand Bookbinding Book Out There.......2006-10-13

After reading this book I was able to complete my first ever sewn multiple signature hardbound book with little to no problems. Watson's numbered and illustrated instructions were simple and easy to follow and his techniques - especially on proper folding, measuring, squaring, mitering the corners and attaching bookcloth - proved very helpful. He even provides a section in the end of the book on how to make your own bindery tools, which is great because equipment such as sewing frames and press tubs can be quite expensive these days.

Watson assumes that you have already collated the signatures for your text block. This is important because there are some things you'll have to consider when assembling the text block in the first place (such as squaring off the fore edge for a finished look) But overall, this is a useful reference for serious home bookbinders.

                      I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars One Half of a Great Set of Instructions on Bookbinding.......2004-06-29

I bought this book, and "The Craft of Bookbinding" by Manly Banister, on the advice of other reviewers. These two books really compliment each other. This book has great, easy to follow instructions for binding books in several different styles, as well as instructions for making slip covers and boxes for boxing sets of books. There is a chapter on making many of the basic bookbinding tools you will need. The illustrations that go with the instructions are large, clear, and easy to follow.
The book by Banister has instructions for making some tools not included in this book. In addition, Watson makes the statement that "perfect bound" books, which include most of the trade paperbacks we own, cannot be rebound. Banister, on the other hand, has a ten page section on perfect binding, and how to rebind your favorite paperback.
Aldren Watson has put together a wonderful book, clear, easy to understand, clearly illustrated, and depending on what you are trying to accomplish, it may be the only one you ever need. I gave it four stars only because it did not cover "perfect binding".
Buy both books and you should be able to tackle just about any bookbinding situation that comes up.

Gardeners from the sunny south to the frigid north will learn to make their landscapes look as beautiful in January as they do in June with this handbook that reveals the secrets of how to create a vibrant, colorful garden all year round. Offering great design ideas and "old-fashioned grow-how," this guide explains how to turn an ordinary mix of flowers, ground covers, flowering trees, and shrubs into a four-season feast for the eyes without a lot of effort or expense. Organized by season, the book's easy-to-use format presents suggestions for using color to turn a garden into a brilliant palette and "Mixes and Fixes" to keep yards in tip-top shape. The "Ask Jerry" section provides answers to common gardening questions, while "Grandma Putt's Green Thumb Tips" features old-time, down-home wisdom that will make gardening a breeze.

Jeffery Leving has spent more than a decade in the trenches of domestic law. From that perspective, he gives men embroiled in custody disputes a powerful and impassioned voice in Fathers Rights. Arguing that men are disenfranchised and stigmatized by a biased legal system, Leving promises help through such difficulties as finding empathetic attorneys, avoiding unhealthy custody arrangements, protecting the child-parent relationship, and remaining financially solvent. Included is advice on how to demonstrate parental competence when falsely accused of abuse.

Writing with passion for the plight of an under-represented population in the domestic drama, Fathers' Rights offers sound, step-by-step council and a road map through the complex terrain of family law. "Too often a dangerous free-fall ensues," Leving writes, speaking of divorce's aftermath. "At every step in the divorce process, the legal system deepens marital wounds, serving up revenge and recrimination much more often than it dispenses compassion and justice." It is Leving's mission to right the wrongs caused by divorce court.

This authoritative and accessible book covers every aspect of the custody process, including protecting the parent/child relationship as a breakup occurs; determining when to settle and when to litigate; techniques for dealing effectively with psychologists, social workers, and other domestic relations expert; and much more.

Illustrated with vivid real-life examples, Jeffery Leving and Kenneth Dachman's practical guide is essential reading for the scores of American Fathers routinely excluded from their children's lives by a biased legal system in which avarice and recrimination too often overwhelm compassion and justice.

Mr. Leving has done a lot of good for fathers' rights in Illinois, and this is a workmanlike treatment of the strategy you should adopt if in court over custody.

But by the time you read this (or a book like this), often it is already too late to set in motion anything that will let you see your children.

If I had a son, I would give him this book in college, and make sure he knew his rights from the get go. Then I would advise him to hold off on marriage or cohabitation as long as possible.

Better to defer marriage and fatherhood and protect your assets than to marry too early, entering the 50% club of potential divorce. All single men should read and heed - unless you want to subsidize some woman's life for eighteen years or more. If you do not feel a compelling need to to marry, feel free to avoid doing so.

After all, having a vagina almost automatically entitles you to custody in the event of a divorce, a decision frequently made in Family Court, where there is no evidentiary due process. In other words, you have more legal rights in criminal court as a defendant than you do in Family Court as a petitioner or respondent. Marriage and fatherhood are dicey propositions these days.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A inprisoned parents rights.......2006-10-27

I have not read this book, but am looking for other self help books on a similar subject.I am a women , and have a child from a previous marriage. This father happens to be in prison for rape and bodily harm on a stranger. He has not seen our child since our son was 4 months old, my son is now 7 years old.

I remarried 2 years ago to wonderful man, we have been living together for a total of 5 years and my son knows him as his only father figure, infact we never incouraged my son to call my husband dad, but one day he just started to on his own.Children know who care for them, shelter them, love them ,and support them. You dont have to be a biological father or mother to do that!

My problem is this violent criminal still has rights to a child he dosn't even know or love , and when he does get out of prison who knows what kind of revenge he will take on me for not allowing visitation.Yes I know I chose to marry him and have a child , but If I knew what he was capable of I assure you I wouldn't have even given him the time of day, but as many of us know we never see the full person until we have lived with them for long enough. This man was also violent, and threatened harm upon me and my infant son.An all around abusive dude, there isnt enough time to even tell even a fraction of the stuff he put us through .

As a parent I should have a right to protect my son from any harmful person even his own biological father. attorney fees to have parental rights revoked so my husband can adopt can cost easily $15,000 in california. I dont have that type of money, and even if I do go through with it only 25 percent of these cases win.

I know there are great fathers out there who deserve to see there children. As a woman I couldn't imagine being so evil and try to take a great fathers rights away without a reason. With my sons biological father you can see that my son could be in danger if he ever had rights to him, but where are my rights to protect him, and where are my sons rights to be safe from potiential harm?

As for the men out there who are in my situation.Try not to be bitter towards women , just like men I assure you there are good ones out there! This isnt a war against the opposite sex, its a war against parents who are dangerous to our childrens welfare, and those people exists on both sides, and it is just as hard for women as it is for men trust me.

3 out of 5 stars Fathers and Men need to WAKE UP NOW .......2006-09-25

I felt compelled to write about this book after reading one of the reviews on it apparently written by a female.

The review yearned for a REAL fathers advocate book written by someone who has been there and lived through the HELL that is divorce, custody and a compete loss of everything that resembled "my life" - after I caught my wife cheating on me.

I read this book during the first stages of my divorce and did not find it overly helpful. BUT, it was the only book that I found that spoke of what was about to happen.

I have been writing columns and attending divorce/mens support groups for two years now and am VERY despondent about what I am seeing.

Fathers rights is the "civil rights" story of this decade and it needs to be SEEN and SPOKEN about in the media.

I have been on a personal crusade to get groups organized in DENVER and to get any media outlet to focus on men's rights but I get NOTHING back - I have emailed Dr Phil, 20/20, every possible media outlet and all I get back is more stories on "deadbeat dads" and Women and Domestic violence.

                                    Bad news GUYS:

We know the courts do not care -
We know the laws are laughably biased -
We know the media would rather propagate more female friendly stories -

But most guys do not ask WHY THIS IS.

I see this as Men not taking action. Men avoid support groups because we are supposed to "suck it up".

Men - WAKE UP - Get active.

If I cannot get this story on 20/20 or Dr Phil, it is because MEN are NOT the audience.

DO men vote, do men get involved in local politics, do men go to therapy to Resolve "their" issues. And these issues could include "how to deal with the powerlessness you feel in the system".

I am working to put together articles I have written about MY experience -
                                    And it was/is horrible:

Wife cheats - gets caught - blames me for her behavior. Badgers the police with false charges against me - of which, I have to expend money to fight her.

My son (8) has cancer. My wife continued to change appointment times and cancel times.

                                    AND GUESS WHAT GUYS:

When you get a Child Advocate or Child Family Investigator:

                                    The game is:

As a MEN, you can never get angry.

If the ex plays with parenting time.

                                    You cannot get angry.

If the ex uniformly ignores Permanent Orders.

                                    You cannot get angry.

If the MAN gets angry the courts will CRUCIFY YOU.

I have documented my experiences and have read most every book (recommend Divorce Poison!!!!!) and plan to get this issue NATIONAL Attention.

I am not optimistic at the moment.

Finally, men, remember, no matter what transpires - no matter the complete injustice of the courts, lawyers, your ex's horrible wrath -

Remember that everything is about the kids. One mistake by you, as the male and father, and the system will take your kids away from you.

Make sure EVERY action is done with this in mind.

                                    regards

                                    Mike

The author of this book certainly does not say anything that is untrue, even given the huge disparity of laws in the 50 states. However, on the front cover, among other things, he says you will learn how to:
*Find an effective and empathetic attorney
                                    *Avoid unfavorable custody arrangements
                                    *Overcome the "tender years" bias
                                    *Remain financially solvent
To be quite honest, being the second wife of a man who has been taken to the cleaners repeatedly by a devious first wife who has no moral compass, all I can say is this book must contain magical powers, because that is the only way any of these things are going to happen.

First off, as far as finding an effective attorney, forget about it. The author's advice is pollyanna-ish at best. Attorneys are foremost interested in making money, and family law only pays off in volume. Therefore your case will get the obligatory two hour cram session from your attorney just prior to court. Plan on doing any real investigation yourself, and realize you are going to probably have to give your attorney a script of questions to read in court because these people are not "out of the box" thinkers.

As far as avoiding unfavorable custody arrangements and overcoming the tender years bias, remember that judges are generally from the most conservative ranks of lawyers, and lawyers are from the most conservative ranks of society. I'm not talking about "conservative" in political terms. I'm talking about conservative in terms of conserving and never questioning the status quo, and the status quo is father = cash machine, mother = protector of civilization. Nothing but divine intervention is going to overcome that. Daniel Broderick overcame it, but then look what happened to him. The author of this book misleads you into believing that the system is remotely fair and unbiased, probably because he has been part of the system and cannot see it for what it is.

As far as remaining financially solvent, the author completely overlooks the most important factor of all - which state you live in. Some states, such as Texas and New York, have absolute limits of 25% of your pre-tax income put on child support. As much as the courts and the mother of your children would love to pick your pockets for more money, this is all they are going to get. However, if you are unfortunate enough to live in the state of Virginia, there is no limit on alimony or child support and you can wind up with negative income flow, which happened in the case of my husband's divorce and is happening now in the case of an acquaintance and his divorce. In fact, the financial ruin of a Virginia divorce is the reason Aldrich Ames gave for becoming the worst spy in American history.

In summary, although I may seem harshly critical, this book is moderately helpful as to absolute facts and a mentality you must take if you are on the road to litigation. However, I subtract two stars because I think it gives false hope to single fathers and their probable future in terms of staying close to their children and not winding up in debtor's prison if the mother is determined to fight. I've been up close and personal with this ongoing problem in my husband's life for the past 14 years, so I think I know what I'm talking about.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2005-09-22

This book is a must read for all dads who are facing custody disputes of any type. Fathers are a very important part of a child's life and they should know how to fight to stay close and involved with their children.

Alan Moore is one of the greatest writers of our time. With Comic book titles, graphic novels, book titles and movies under his belt, it can easily be said that he will go down in history as one of the greats. Now, inside this volume, Alan Moore's friends, co-workers, associates and confidants give their side of what they feel Alan Moore represents to them. How many people have been inspired to create their life's work because of him? How has he influenced other outstanding authors? What kind of person is he and does he realy practice magick? All of these questions and more are addressed in this excellently penned and highly Visual edition of "Alan Moore: Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman" by Spencer Millidge. This one is definately a keeper!!!

5 out of 5 stars a contributing author comments: notes from Link Yaco.......2005-12-12

This was a delightful and strange experience for me. The editor, Gary Spencer Millidge, has a deserved cult following for his charmingly weird STRANGEHAVEN comic. I believe we exchanged email once, he in Britain, I in New York. My main contact was with THE SMOKY MAN!

Smoky is a fantastic soul who lives in Sardinia. Smoky is his nickname due to some pun on Turkish tabacco and his name, I believe.

In poetic English, which sadly, has been improving over the years, Smoky had originally asked me to contribute to his website ULTRAZINE. If you haven't seen this bilingual site, you must. I believe I wrote two or three. And each was translated into Italian. I have to admit that being translated was an exciting experience for me. Even more exciting was Smoky apologetic payment for my work: 10 lbs. of Italian comics! Yes, he mailed me a big beautiful STACK of comics. And they were GREAT. Oh, just wonderful. That was the first time I ever saw DYLAN DOG. Wow and double-wow.

Then Smoky began a special Alan Moore tribute issue of Ultrazine. The list of contributors grew rapidly. Soon major players were jumping on board. AND AN IDEA FLICKERED.

...or at least that is how I understood the genesis of the project, in my interpretation of Smoky enthusiastic poetic English.

I think I had been the only English-language writer on the project at first, but THAT soon changed! MAN, did it change!
But Smoky was a gentleman and included me in the project even tho my one-book authorship dimmed in the shadow of these giants.
Bless Smoky. And bless Gary, who by then had graciously taken on the Herculean task of editing the project. Without him etc.

And the result is a polished lovely book that I am truly proud to be part of.

It was a fantastic experience that I shall treasure to the very end of my journey.

3 out of 5 stars A fair tribute, worth it for some..........2004-07-22

...but not for others. I do feel that the book was a little too long--a few too many single page tributes that just seemed the same ("I first read Alan Moore when I...;" "Alan Moore changed the way I...;" etc., etc.). I feel like this book would have been a better service if the articles had been kept down to people with some legitimate statement on Moore's work or their personal involvement. An excellent example of this is Steve Bissette's essay in which he outlines his dealings with Moore from the Swamp Thing run, on through Taboo, into their falling out over a hornets' nest of problems in the early nineties. The article is not entirely "in tribute," but it does good service to the fans by being informative on a subject frought with rumor and speculation. I'm sure Moore was probably surprised, if not chagrined, to read it.

The Dave Sim article is excellent (I'm working on reading that right now as a matter of fact). It's daunting but highly rewarding: Sim is easily the most undervalued comics interviewer, for a multiplicity of reasons that aren't worth going into here. The more scholastic articles by Jose Alaniz, in my book you can take them or leave them. There doesn't seem to be much appreciable about what he's written about that a cursory reading of the same texts (especially the "Best of all Tailors" chapter of From Hell) couldn't provide. I'm sure they're of some value to someone, but that doesn't really include me.

Also, the book is co-produced by Italian, English and American people/companies, hence the inclusion of a lot of nameless Italian artists (and a couple of writers). I'm sure that's of massive significance to the Italian comics community, but it's pretty far removed from everywhere else. Still, it doesn't muddle up the book too much...and the pictures are nice...

Altogether, I would neither characterize the book as entirely without merit, save the interviews, nor would I characterize it as a 100% tour de force production. It's a good book for hardcore Moore fans (or wanna-be hardcore fans, with a decent but incomplete bibliography in the back). My advice, if you don't have a copy of Watchmen (which you SHOULD), From Hell, V for Vendetta, and a good Swamp Thing or two, buy those first and then enjoy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Inconsequential tribute to a great writer.......2003-10-17

This is a strange book. On the one hand, it's packed with art from a long list of talented illustrators. On the other, I don't know who these illustrators are; they all seem to be European. So, although I like their artwork, the fact that they are doing two-page tributes to Alan Moore means nothing to me.

And then there's the text. If the text isn't an interview with Alan Moore, it's not worth reading. 99% of it is just forgettable. There are three essays by one person (who shall remain nameless) that are memorable because they are so horrible. These essays are 'post modern' --- which means that they are full of silly jargon and obscure references to Derrida and that sort of thing. If you don't know what post-modern writing is, consider yourself blessed.

The one really worthwile part of the book is at the end, in an exchange of letters between the cranky Canadian cartoonist, Dave Sim, and Alan Moore. Moore takes the time to describe why he's interested in occultism and how his research in the last ten years has enriched his life. It's a unique story from a brilliant man. He seems to be spelunking his own psyche and then writing about his discoveries.

I can't recommend this book. It looks nice and the end is good, but it's not really worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Happy birthday Mr. Moore.......2003-07-08

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the funniest and most beautiful tribute ever made to an author! I have never seen anything like this in centuries! I think that the basic idea of the whole project is strongly related with being an Alan Moore fan, which is a thing that a lot of the autohrs involved in the book share. But there's more to it: that means that even though every contribution is not perfect, neat and amazing, love, respect and passion are always granted in every inch of this work. Every artist/writer that has participated has done its best, even in a simple way, to say: Happy birthday Mr. Moore.

If you're expecting me to cite my favourite contributions you are wrong: too many and too beautiful, and right now I can only remeber one of those that Moore will appreciate more: Will Eisner's one!

In a few words: a must-read for all Moore's fan over the globe, buy it and you won't be disappointed.

P.S.: I was almost forgetting to say that in the end of the volume there is a complete bibliography, which can be considered a stand-alone motivation to buy it.
