Book Description
Wild emmer is the progenitor of most cultivated wheats and thus an important source of wheat improvement. This book draws the results from multidisciplinary studies on the ecological, genetic, genomic, agronomic, and evolutionary aspects of wild emmer, conducted at many labs around the world.
It is divided into the following parts: Origin and Evolution of Wheat - Population Genetics of Wild Emmer Wheat at the Protein and DNA Levels - Genetic Resources of Wild Emmer for Wheat Improvement - Genome Organization and Genetic Mapping - Conclusions and Prospects.
The authors describe the evolution of wild emmer as a model organism of a selfer in evolutionary biology, and its rich potential genetic resources for wheat improvement.

Facts Not Straight.......2003-10-17
I will only say that if the author of a book about a country (or countries) demonstrates in the "Facts" section not having even looked at a map of the region, showing complete lack of knowledge of the most basic geography of what s/he claims to know and write about, what reliability can you expect from such a book?
I'll give you three examples from the "Facts on Argentina" section that reveal lack of knowledge of the region's geography and geopolitics.
1. It says: "In most of Argentina and the other Rio de la Plata countries (Uruguay and Paraguay)...". This is the grosser mistake because Paraguay is nowhere near! the Rio de la Plata river. And that is easy to see in a map of the area this book writes about. Also from a cultural perspective, this is a gross mistake. Only Uruguay and Argentina are (and always have been) known as "the Rio de la Plata river countries". There is even a culture common to both margins of the Rio de la Plata (River Plate in English). This "rioplatense" culture (from "Rio" and "Plata") is not even shared by all of huge Argentina that is a lot more than just the region around this river that divides it from smaller Uruguay.
2. It says that Spaniard "Solís probed the area now known as Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay". But the region occupied by what today are those three countries is VERY big--and one could not say more than Solís probed the region around the Rio de la Plata river, which covers only a small section of today's Uruguay and Argentina (and not Paraguay).
3. It says that "Solís died at the hands of Uruguayan tribes". This sounds almost as a joke if not an insult. Uruguayans did not exist in Solís's times. The author might mean "the tribes *then* inhabiting *today's* Uruguay". Those tribes were not Uruguayan, just as the Apaches were not American (nationals of the U.S.).
I leave the conclusions up to you. I'm sure *some* facts must be right in this book, but such a lack of professionalism revealed in the absense of the most basic review of the facts of a book edited by a large, well knwon publisher does not inspire the least trust in me. I rather not waste my money: I am willing to pay for information--not for mis*information.
A step up, rather.......2003-07-19
The first 'reviewer' has it wrong--this edition of Lonely Planet's Argentina book is a remarkable improvement over the 3rd edition, which at times is convolutedly wordy beyond belief. The review sounds like it was written by the previous author. Be aware that some competetive guidebooks, such as those put out by Avalon (or Moon) pay their authors based on the royalty system. In other words, on how many books they sell. Avalon may be putting out their own Argentina guide soon. Your best advice: run through the books at a bookstore and decide for yourself which fits your needs best.
A step backward.......2003-04-21
Except for most of the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego chapters, which show evidence of capable research and writing, this is a step backward from the previous edition. The coverage of northwestern Argentina is superficial and even naive, and the coverage of Iguazu falls missed the enormous changes that resulted from privatization of national park services over the past few years. It looks as if only one, perhaps two, of the five authors was really up to the job.
Fills more of the void than the others.......2003-03-10
I used the guide in February 2003 to complete a trip in Argentina. The Lonely Planet guide was the best that I found, but none were up to par. I had Rough Guide to Argentina with me as well, and found it superior for the descriptions of points of interest. Lonely Planet, however, provided adequate descriptions and added travel information (75% correct) and local maps from time to time. Particularly unreliable were prices (of course, with the economic situation) and flight information. Pricing in any of the Arg. guides published for early 2003 is only good for comparison between like opportunities. Flights tended to be offered on different days or had been cancelled since publishing. The only notable information flaw I remember was in the El Bolson description, where they placed the cervezeria and associated campground on the opposite side of town. Everyone I met travelling to Uruguay or Paraguay had the Shoestring Guide to S.A. rather than this specialty guide, so I have no information on those sections of the book. All in all, the L.P. guide provided the best overall information, and I wouldn't have had as much time to enjoy my trip without it.

the best is yet to come.......2001-09-14
It's true, this book is not the best LP has to offer, with somewhat pedantic, bone-dry descriptions and overly-detailed town histories your average traveler could care less about. It still offers your basic traveler's information, though, and you won't miss much with this complete tome in your hot little hands.
A promise, however: the next edition will arrive spicier and cutting-edge fresh, with beefed up entertainment sections and wittier town introductions to boot. It will also be more fun to read (same goes for the Buenos Aires guide). I personally guarantee it.
so where is buenos aires????.......2001-03-20
LP guides are usually complete and thorough. so why is the section on buenos aires in this one so carelesly researched? is it because LP wants us to buy their book on buenos aires or because their researchers didn't visit the city at all? i've been to buenos aires countless times. reading the LP guide, one would think that it is just a hamlet not worth wasting your time on. buenos aires is one of the most exciting and mysterious places in the world; a european outpost in south america, full of chic decadence and a lot more than just beef and tango. entire districts are overlooked by the guide, descriptions are misleading or incomplete and uninviting at best. one wonders why. if you're looking for a guide to buenos aires, buy yourself a plane ticket and a map. once in the city, meet the locals. this is one city you need to explore and understand rather than just see. as jorge luis borges once said: ''it would seem that buenos aires has existed forever.''
Very informative for non-Buenos Aires destinations.......2000-08-04
Used this guide for all three countries - Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The information for the latter two countries was the most detailed and reliable (maybe because things don't change there as fast as they do in B.A.). It was especially good for hotels/restaurants in Montevideo; the region around Igauzu Falls (including Foz de Iguacu and Ciudad del Este); and Bariloche. Travellers going exclusively to Buenos Aires might want to get a more cosmopolitan book (it is impossible to distinguish good hotels from bad, good cultural events, etc. using this book). The whole lonelyplanet shoestring/adventure "feel" doesn't mesh well with a city as culturally rich & refined as Buenos Aires.
LP Guide Slights Buenos Aires.......2000-03-18
Though I had this book when I visited Buenos Aires, I found it utterly useless. I stayed with a group of friends who are natives of this incredible city and so I was able to rely on their information about cool neighborhoods and off-beat places. Though LP prides itself on offering this kind of information, this edition has little that allows travelers to discover the city's uniqueness. Instead, I used this guide to find museums and other basic info that I could have gleaned from ANY guide. It's hard to believe that LP included hardly any information about Palermo, one of the city's most charming neighborhoods, or failed to mention the tradition of Milongas, which are "local" dances in venues such as community centers where everyday Portenos dance the tango with more grace and passion than you will find in the expensive, touristy shows. It's rather disappointing considering that the LP published an entire city guide on this capital.
Lonely Planet Argentina Uruguay & Paraguay (2nd Ed.).......1999-12-17
This guide badly needs updating! I found that a lot of addresses for museums and tourist information have changed (I visited Argentina in October-December 1999). Though the included local maps are usually very good and easy to read a first stop should always be the tourist office (ask locals for present address) for more up to date information. Background information on history is excellent. Generally I found the guide very helpful but it lacks enthusiasm for this beautiful country and does not really entice one to go. More descriptions about the essential character of individual towns would help.

Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die
ASIN: 0786869496
Release Date: 2004-02-18 |
Book Description
Mark Katz was the kid who cracked jokes from the back row of seventh grade English class-but grew up to write humor speeches for the president of the United States. Clinton Me is his comic account of an eventful path from the principal's ofce to the Oval Ofce and the many stops along the way. Over the course of eight years in the chaotic Clinton White House, his job was to write the president's funny response to the crisis of the moment-from 'I did not inhale' to 'I did not have sex with that woman.' How did Mark Katz wind up in the White House? He spent his childhood trying to make the Nixon Enemy List and deploying classroom jokes to deny others their education. He hitched his wagon to Michael Dukakis' star-only to become the joke writer on a campaign that was a joke unto itself. Four years later, he was an unemployed copywriter when he got a call from a flailing Clinton White House in need of jokes. And the rest, as they say, is comedy. Clinton Me chronicles an unforgettable presidency from a unique vantage point, weaving Wonder Years-hindsights with high-stakes, real-life West Wing drama. Sure to nd a home on nightstands next to the books of Christopher Buckley, David Sedaris, Al Franken, and George Stephanopoulos, Clinton Me is a life-long coming-of-age story unlike any political memoir ever written.

He Only Has to Make One Person Laugh.......2005-05-20
Writing jokes for political people is unlike writing jokes for someone like Letterman or Leno. If the President or Secretary of State tells a joke, chances are everyone is going to laugh, whether the joke is funny or not. People tend to hold Letterman to a higher standard, humor-wise. So the guy who writes jokes for the President only has to make the President laugh. Which may explain why I didn't find Mark Katz's book very funny.
While I was interested in how someone becomes a joke writer for the President, I was not as interested in Katz's rather boring, suburban New Jersey childhood. I really did not like his revenge-tinged stories of teachers who found him disruptive in class, or his kiss-and-tell story of how, after he became successful, he got lucky with a woman who wouldn't go out with him in college.
The story drags until he gets back to the political stories. I enjoyed reading about Katz's dealings with Madeleine Albright, Al Gore, and Bill Clinton. I even enjoyed the story of the bizarre negotiations to get Big Bird and Barney on the same stage with the President. And the book ends with a pretty good story, too.
Oddly enough, the jokes Mark Katz tells here are not funny. On the other hand, George Stephanopolous, Al Gore, and Katz's friend, Fisher, come across as very funny. And what is with the footnotes? I usually read footnotes, but Katz goes crazy with them here, and this isn't even the sort of book that really merits footnotes.
So, my advice is to quickly skim the first half of Clinton & Me, skipping the footnotes, and enjoy the second half.
Calling All Clinton-ites! .......2005-04-08
This book CAN be hazardous to your social life- merrily reading this book while on my bus route to and from work, often led me to laughing out loud which is never good when you are a single girl hoping to meet interesting men. But while it may not get me a date, it did help keep some of the crazy people from the empty side of my seat. So there is an up side!
For those of you out there who are either true Clinton fans or true political junkies- this book will not only quench your desire for all the Clinton WH trivia, it will also open an eye into the behind the scenes stuff we all crave. Mark has written a book that is not only laugh-out-loud funny but also insightful and chockful of the kind of little details that true political junkies are dying to hear about. Thru his eyes, we not only meet the President but we get to see the WH on good days and bad, and see the cameraderie as well as the push and pull of who is on the hot list. Mark is so funny and so talented that you will find yourself reading over the best parts just cos you enjoyed 'em so much. And apart from the WH stories, his little asides, footnotes and redactions are hilarious!! Those are maybe the best parts. I also really responded to his honesty- whether he is detailing how he felt (from being dazzled by Barbra to drinking too much and spewing his dinner) or admitting to a real need for praise, he is as honest as he is funny.
Maybe the best part.....as a kid who grew up similarly to him, I found it wonderful to discover that sometimes not fitting in means you end up in a place that fits you. Mark Katz certainly did, and his very great book makes us all glad of that!
Best book from the Clinton White House.......2005-02-04
Katz tells what has to be the best story to come out of those working within the Clinton White House.
He of course is not a major player in the administration but through his number of trips to work with various people in preparing speeches he is able to give an uncommon insight to the people who led this country.
Very good flow and entertainment. A definate must buy for anyone even if you were not a Clinton supporter.
Best book I have read all year.......2005-01-01
Although I am not a great Clinton fan, I am more of one now and a big fan of Mark Katz. If you have any interest in politics this is a MUST READ.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington...and laughs.......2004-12-03
If laughter is the best medicine, then Medicare providers should prescribe Mark Katz' book Clinton and Me. More so, after waking up with a political hangover from this last presidential cycle, this book is an important reminder that our democracy is less tragedy and more comedy. Mark Katz, of course, knows this since he earned his stripes as President Clinton's joke writer. This book will not only teach you about the joys of government service but will do so while laughing out loud. This is part memoir, part political history but two parts joke book. Clinton and Me is not irreverent but revealing. Mark Katz' wit demonstrates that our politics would be far less divisive and negative if we learned to take ourselves a little less seriously. One thing we should take seriously is Mark Katz' hysterical book Clinton and Me which is by far the best political read of the year.

Book Description
Silver chains are the backbone of any jewelry collection and these distinctive designs have those special handmade touches that machine-made jewelry just can't match--magnificent hammered silver, intriguingly complex links, and common motifs twisted into charming patterns. And anyone can craft them, with this extensively illustrated introduction that explains all the basics, from link formation to soldering and polishing. There's additional information on pivots and joinery, and even how to consider the effect of gravity on the finished piece as it rests on the body. Try the Geometric Chain, comprised of varied wire forms that rest in the crooks of their neighboring links, or the Spine design, which utilizes flattened wire and unique pivoting joinery. A gallery of contemporary chains provides inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
Review of "Creative Silver Chains".......2007-08-15
"Creative Silver Chains" is a very attractive book with detailed pictures of all the chains you may make. The introduction is also very good in that the materials you might use are discussed at length, as well as the tools needed. Suggestions are given on the best tools to use. The author says that the 20 projects are arranged roughly from Easy to Most difficult so that you can build up your expertise. There are also chains pictured that are above the scope of this book in difficulty, to whet your appetite. I would recommend the book to someone who has some experience in working with silver and with soldering.
mostly soldering.......2007-01-19
I do not solder so this book was not very helpful. If you can solder this book is excellent. I do wirework but with soldering required for most of the chains I have to return the book.
Creative Silver Chains: 20 Dazzling Designs.......2007-01-12

Creative Silver Chains: 20 Dazzling Designs.......2007-01-10
An excellent book. The information is invaluable
boring chains, great artist's gallery samples.......2007-01-05
Some of the chains presented as "Artist's gallery samples" are fantastic. Lots of inspirational designs and great techniques. I got several very good ideas for projects.
On the other hand, the book's actual project chains are mostly generic and uninteresting. I saw this book befor I bought it, and bought it for the non-project samples. I've seen several of the book's chains made up by friends, and they were not more interesting than they looked in the book.
There are tons of free chain instructions available on the internet. It is worth the time to seek them out instead.

Book Description
The Natural Child makes a compelling case for a return to attachment parenting, a child-rearing approach that has come naturally for parents throughout most of human history. In this insightful guide, parenting specialist Jan Hunt links together attachment parenting principles with child advocacy and homeschooling philosophies, offering a consistent approach to raising a loving, trusting, and confident child.
The Natural Child dispels the myths of "tough love," building baby's self-reliance by ignoring its cries, and the necessity of spanking to enforce discipline. Instead, the book explains the value of extended breast-feeding, family co-sleeping, and minimal child-parent separation.
Homeschooling, like attachment parenting, nurtures feelings of self-worth, confidence, and trust. The author draws on respected leaders of the homeschool movement such as John Taylor Gatto and John Holt, guiding the reader through homeschool approaches that support attachment parenting principles.
Being an ally to children is spontaneous for caring adults, but intervening on behalf of a child can be awkward and surrounded by social taboo. The Natural Child shows how to stand up for a child's rights effectively and sensitively in many difficult situations. The role of caring adults, points out Hunt, is not to give children "lessons in life"-but to employ a variation of The Golden Rule, and treat children as we would like to have been treated in childhhood.
Customer Reviews:
Good parenting book, but turned off by extreme views.......2007-05-22
I'm a firm believer in attachment parenting and gentle discipline. My children have been breastfed and coslept as babies. However, I believe some of Jan's views on mainstream parenting are a bit too offensive. To say that a child who attends public school is more likely to end up in prison or a breastfed baby that is weaned by his mother may end up as an alcoholic 20 years later is ridiculous. Even her views as cribs as "lonely cages" is too extreme for my taste, and I have co-slept with my children.
I did learn a few things from this book so I hesitate to not recommend it, but I have found more helpful books out there that don't make me feel like I'm a bad parent for not following it exactly. Kids, Parents and Power Struggles by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka and Playful Parenting are my all time favorites.
Written from the heart.......2007-05-18
I loved EVERY single word of this book. It seems like this should be taught on schools instead of some of the things they teach. I felt very in tune with Jan and her philosphies, as I have done this kind of parenting intuitively already. It is nice to see (read) that somebody else has had the same experience and/ or that there is another way besides letting "baby cry it out" or bombard the kids with toys, when all they really want and need is being part of the family.
This book is an easy read and very hard to put down. I have read it while nursing and was always "sad" when my daughter was done and I had to put the book down. A must have!!
Try it and see.......2007-04-26
Try, just for one week, to assume that Jan Hunt's premise is correct: interpret EVERY communication from your child (your baby's cry, your toddler's tantrum, etc.) as a manifestation of a valid need that must be addressed by a loving parent. Try, for one week, to place yourself in your child's shoes, especially every time you consider her to be "difficult" or to have gone against your will. Try, for one week, to "stay on your child's side," as Ms. Hunt would say, despite looks of disapproval from outsiders (for example, when your 2 year old behaves like a 2 year old during a church service). Try, for one week, to take it for granted that good intentions underly every single expression from your child. Through this experiment, you will find that Ms. Hunt is on to something as you see your relationship with your child strengthened and deepened. Through this experiment, you will gain a greater understanding of yourself, your child, and human nature. And you will start to find that one of Ms. Hunt's basic precepts -that "every child behaves as well as she is treated"- is, indeed, true. Perhaps you will be able to see further into how this simple, albeit not always easy, method of parenting can have great consequences not only for your family but also for humanity. For the parent for whom this experiment sounds strange, this book will open new doors that will surely be of benefit. For the parent who has always tried to relate to her child in these ways, this book will provide much needed confirmation and support during those moments when the relatively new world of convenience parenting seems to say you're off the beaten path. I suggest the experiment because the proof really is in the pudding. Ms. Hunt herself uses the example of her son. But you won't have to wait until your child is grown to find out. It will feel right, for you and for your child, straight from the start! Smooth writing and extremely important substance will make this read well worth your time.
Put the Natural Child #1 on your must read list!.......2007-04-05
Jan Hunt gently puts her finger right on the pulse of natural, compassionate, empathetic parenting (and existing). This book spells out a loving, cruelty free parenting philosophy that hopefully many of us are exploring and embracing wholeheartedly. We no longer need struggle. For those parents trying to give our children something better than what we recieved, Hunt's suggestions and insight are like a comforting salve. Her essays are full of both practical and extremely poignant advice. Offering guidance about how to heal our own wounds and enlighten the people in our lives who just "don't get it," The Natural Child is an answer to the nagging questions some of us may have about how we can be the best parents possible for our little ones. I needed to hear more about how I cannot love my child to much nor spoil him with patience, tolerance and caring. As a child who was deeply wounded I have a fierce drive to protect children from harm and Jan Hunt uses plain language to help me do just that. The Natural Child has been both healing and insightful for me. We are in a parenting and learning crisis here and warriors like Jan Hunt are really making a difference in our world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who breathes. FYI Jan Hunt is available for telephone counseling which is incredible and has a lovely website with a wealth of information on all things Natural Child.
wonderful book.......2007-03-19
This book is about fulfilling the full needs of a child so that they can grow on to be healthy adults. Ms. Hunt knows what she is talking about here; attachment and bonding are crucial for babies and children and they are the foundation for living a fulfilling and healthy adult life. In a time when parents are often rushed, children are being carted around from here to there all day long and childrearing is often seen as a chore, it is important to be reminded that raising children is a privilege. Jan Hunt's book does this and so much more.
Book Description
"This imaginative, wordless book of color photographs is a visual treat, offering witty and subtle sets of images for enriching the eyes of children and adults....[A] satisfying, intriguing book."--School Library Journal.
Shadows and reflections are all around us -- under our feet, over our heads, directly in front of us. But only Tana Hoban can make us look at -- and see -- what is right before our eyes. She makes us look with our minds and hearts and imaginations -- and our surroundings are forever changed.

different books / styles for different learners.......2007-01-21
t.hoban's books are very unique in the sense that they offer a very open ended translation about what the reader is looking at. in this particular book, the photographs allow the parent reading with the child to discuss each picture, the shadows and the reflections as opposed to just reading given text in front of you. i think this allows a good learning dialogue between parent/instructor and child. another scenario is that t.hobans books allow the child that looks through the book on their own to find their own ideas about each photo. in my teaching experience some children who showed no interest in books were just drawn to books with actual photos but often they were hard to find on a kindergarten level. my 3 yr old daughter has been "reading" t.hoban books since she was 1 1/2 and has always enjoyed the actual photography as a nice change. she also likes finding new and different things to talk about each time we pick up the book and most importantly has always been able to apply something from a t.hoban book to a real life experience. yes, the books are a bit different from the norm but they also offer us a way to teach our children and our children to learn in a way a bit different from the norm.
We Don't Get What All the Hoop-la is About.......2005-05-27
If Children had coffee tables, Tana Hoban's books would probably be on them. That said, my children and I don't get what all the hoop-la is about. Sure, the pictures have that artistic 'gritiness' that one often sees in galleries, but really, how many young children find that style appealing!?!
In this particular book (as compared to Toban's "Dig-Drill, Dump-Fill") I don't even think the photographs are that inspired. The cat lying on the car hood is just that; a tabby on carhood.
Two stars- Some pictures are interesting but definitely take a look at it in the Library before purchasing.
Book Description
We all grew up in Saul Steinberg’s America, a place he envisioned for us in his drawings and cartoons for The New Yorker—none more famous than his iconic image of a New Yorker’s view of the world. In this eccentric and unpredictable memoir, one of the twentieth century’s most intellectually nimble artists shares his view of the world, of America and his place in it.
A Romanian by birth, restless by inclination, Steinberg lived a peripatetic existence. In Reflections and Shadows, he introduces us to his family—his uncle Moritz, a sign painter, and his father (also Moritz), a bookbinder whose small factory produced cardboard boxes and ribbons for funeral wreaths. He tells us how he dodged the police in fascist Italy in 1940 and how he came to America, where he became a citizen, an officer in the U.S. Navy, and the foremost visionary satirist of his time.
No one has depicted America with all its strengths and foibles more enduringly than Saul Steinberg. In this playful meditation, based on a series of interviews with Aldo Buzzi that has never before been published in English, and interwoven with more than a dozen drawings, Steinberg delivers a laconic hymn to America: its baseball, its diners, and its exhibitionism. “It is stinginess,” Steinberg writes, speaking of his art and method, “that holds us back.” But he had none of that: the personality that emerges from these pages is capacious, acutely discriminating, full of serendipitous curiosities, and consistently engaging.

Steinberg and Borges.......2007-01-23
This is the delightful little memoir of Saul Steinberg,
translated from the italian by John Shepley. Its great value
is that it is the closest we will ever come to reading
the work of one of America's great literary talents.
Now it's become a pretty commonplace observation that
Steinberg is as appropriate a nominee for the literary
hall of fame as he is for the graphic artists'. This is
the little book that seals the deal. It turns out that
Steinberg's aphoristically-turned phrases are as clear and
concise as his drawings. This book is sadly, all he wrote.
Steinberg did not intend this to be a personal disclosure-
he is a man who had his memoir written by somebody else. And
yet, it turns out that the very tightness of phrasing gives
the man away. What did he learn of Milan when he was there?
Not much. "My chief interest then was girls. .I was looking...
.to find myself through love."
There are a few drawings here, all of them small and printed
just well enough to make you wish they were printed better.
If you are amoung the unconverted and want to catch examples
of his drawing see the wonderful exhibit at the Morgan
Library in New York or one of the great collections
(my favorite is Passport). But for true believers, Reflections
is Steinberg's literary love song, a book that puts him in the
company of Borges.

Musings on life and art.......2004-11-29
Published after his death in 1999, this is a meditation based on a series of interviews of Steinberg by Buzzi. Beginning with his childhood and youth in Romania, through his wartime experience in Italy and his maturity in the United States, Steinberg muses with an acute visual sense, appropriate for an artist. The book is illustrated with his drawings.
His ideas about influences on art are insightful. as he describes early photographers "inspired by the paintings of Delacroix and Ingres", to his thought that Bacon "clearly derives from the Polaroid". I was intrigued by his suggestion that the use of industrial paints in American art occurred because of poor artists used cold-water flats as studios, "and to make them livable they had to scrape and paint the walls, doors and windows, and floors . . . and this led them to work on a large scale, to use industrial paints, such as gold or silver on radiators, new materials". His description of the New York City taxi cab of the `40's as created out of Cubist elements, of the automobile influenced by Constructivism, Cubism, and "Fernandlégerism" makes one look at cars in a whole new light.
The title, Reflections and Shadows, comes from a section in which he discusses how what one sees in reverse in a reflection (in a mirror, in water) or shadow is often better - sharper, more intense - than the original. "If you look only at the reflection, and not at the reflecting part, you see a gratuitous reality that exists for you alone. For fun I throw a stone into the upside-down landscape, and seeing that the lower part moves I almost expect the upper part to move too."
If I quoted all my favorite parts of this book, I'd be typing almost the entire thing, so you'll have to go read it for yourself!
Delightful little book.......2002-12-02
The autobiographical musings of a New Yorker cartoonist told to his old friend, and filled with wit, humanity and philosophical gems. Stories of escaping from the fascist police in Italy, too lazy to brutally arrest people at the usual invisible ungodly hour. Or civic life in 1950s Washington, and the charming people who knew exactly how to be courteous and to dismiss those who didn't belong. Or the poor white in kentucky, like protagonists out of American fiction, whereas the bourgeoisie, respectable people, "always the same". And Magritte's discovery of multiple sources of light in a painting (sun, streetlamp, electric light inside a house, the moon, reflections of light. Or American gastronomy, in which "the taste of the nation are governed by the tastes of children".

I joke among my friends -- who are almost all obsessed with making it big in the computer industry or the music business -- that Seattle is the land of Microsoft, Microbreweries, and Microcelebrities. David Shields, best known for his novels such as
Dead Languages, has written a droll, sometime hilarious, and consistently important factual fiction about this pathological passion for celebrity.
Remote seems to be based on the Socratic dictum that the unexamined life is not worth living. But unlike elitist social critics, Shields has had the courage to examine his own fascination with fame, instead of pointing an accusing finger at "them", whoever "they" might be. Like Neil Postman in
Amusing Ourselves to Death, Shields seems to argue that it is we ourselves who are to blame for the cargo cult of fame, in which outriggers have been replaced by remote controls as the carriage of choice. Without worshippers, there cannot be deities -- and without channel surfers, there cannot be celebrities.
Book Description
In this truly one-of-a-kind book, the author/narrator-a representative, in extremis, of contemporary American obsession with beauty, celebrity, transmitted image-finds himself suspended, fascinated, in the remoteness of our wall-to-wall mediascape. It is a remoteness that both perplexes and enthralls him.
Through dazzling sleight of hand in which the public becomes private and the private becomes public, the entire book-clicking from confession to family-album photograph to family chronicle to sexual fantasy to pseudo-scholarly footnote to reportage to personal essay to stand-up comedy to cultural criticism to literary criticism to film criticism to prose-poem to litany to outtake-becomes both an anatomy of American culture and a searing self-portrait.
David Shields reads his own life-reads our life-as if it were an allegory about remoteness and finds persuasive, hilarious, heartbreaking evidence wherever he goes.
Customer Reviews:
The Little Things.......2003-07-14
This book will be of interest to those who notice the little things in life, the things that are hard to miss but always get looked over. Saying what people want to say but may be too afraid to, Shields' book is bold and truthful about the world. The minute detail that instances of his own past and the cultural past of America that are investigated in this book are thought-provoking. A book that anyone could relate to, "Remote" points out the absurdity of everyday life. The everyday things that we all notice but don't quite register are here in this American critique. A book for anyone who has a family, is American, is a subject of humanity will relate to and revel in this insightful quest for resolution, and feel comfort in the fact that we are not alone.
Fascinating Read...should be back in print.......2001-01-15
This is a wonderful and at times wonderous book. Some terrific passages about our celebrity driven culture and our "remoteness." Some of the book is hilarious, some it is sad. I especially liked the section about the allure of women in glasses. Brillant. The passage about David "NYPD Blue" Milch is powerful. Autobiography or allegory or both, this book is unlike anything you have read or will read. It deserves another life back in print.
David Shields' Remote; a memoir of media separateness.......1998-09-16
In "Remote", David Shields tells his own story through the printed and recorded parts of America. One of Shields' central themes is the difference between life and virtual-life: major events in his memory are linked directly to some form of media. His story is based on "almost fame," or as a frequent title explains, "the nimbus of her fame makes a nullity of us all." The idea of media remoteness is explored in amazingly honest detail, often with humor and a delicious taste of irony at the ridiculous. Through his obsession with "the filmed familiar," Oprah, America's Funniest Home Videos, and anecdotes too numerous to mention, Mr. Shields' essays capture the confusion and separateness that America feels at the power of its entertainment industry. This book is a must for anyone who claims to be media-savvy or enjoys a concise, entertaining and intelligent autobiography. There isn't much that this book doesn't cover, but much more impressive is the advice that it manages to suggest. As Mr. Shields' observations add another dimension to your understanding of this world, you'll find yourself underlining and circling while smiling drily.

This is an intriguing concept for a book of photo interviews. But then, award-winning documentary photographer Jana Marcus has always been drawn to the fringe; And one of her earlier collections was entitled Midnight in Manhattan: A Decade of Subcultures and the Alternative Scene. In the Shadow of the Vampire, her first book, assembles portraits of and interviews with the devotees and disciples of the Queen of Vampirism herself, Anne Rice. And who are these people? Office administrators, translators, shop owners, students, and the more flamboyant (blood drinkers, S&M'ers, role-playing gamers).
"Her books allow people to think about their place in society and identify their feelings through her characters' exploration of unconventional lifestyles," she opines. "It is extraordinary how many people I've spoken to who had never read a book before they read an Anne Rice novel." Ever think of Anne Rice as an inadvertent champion of literacy? As may be expected, the reflections are a mixture of the banal and the more thought-provoking. The phenomenon of Anne Rice's celebrity is after all--well, phenomenal. The enormity of her appeal has given birth to the annual Gathering of The Coven Ball in New Orleans, movies, an Anne Rice tour company, a perfume line, a Lestat wine, and T-shirts emblazoned with an MRI of Rice's brain. And if all that leaves you colder than sleeping alone in a casket, then you might want to pick up a copy for great tips on wardrobe and make-up.

first hand.......2006-06-20
i am in this book as well and would like to say that the demographic that it covers is indeed accurate and diverse. i attended anne's booksigning for "violin" just minutes after i attended my own at britton trice's store. anne herself asked if our intentions were pure by participating in this conglomeration, and i assured her that we were sincere indeed. she read and embraced the book, and that's all the proof i need. it was a pleasure being involved with jana and the others back in '96 and '97; truly an experience that i will forever cherish.
I was there........2005-08-26
This book features stories and photography of people and events around the 1995 Memnoch Ball that Anne hosted at a home she used to own called St. Elizabeth's, a former orphange and one of the settings of Memnoch the Devil. I was an ARVLFC fan club member and volunteer worker at that party and I must say that this book is a good representation of the people you would have run across there but more importantly it is a window to a place in time that burned brightly and served its purpose in creating good memories. This book and its photographs take me back to those magical moments like any good photo album should. Perhaps you just had to be there to appreciate all the stories this book has to offer but it is definitely worth the read. The fan club and the big parties officially ended in 2000 but we have been having a more intimate Ball in New Orleans every Halloween weekend since 2002 known as Les Temps des Vampires and the Vampire Lestat Ball. Through this event we keep a little of the spirit seen in this wonderful book alive.
A fascinating read!.......2002-11-13
This book gives an interesting glance into the world of Anne Rice fans; however, it may either affirm or disprove the notion that her fans are "weirdos." The book features college students, accountants, writers, exotic dancers, make-up artists, etc. While it features intriguing people from all walks of life, I don't believe it's an entirely accurate view of her fans, and I feel that the book still tries to perpetuate a certain fan stereotype, as though reading Anne Rice makes you estranged from the rest of society.
As a previous reviewer noted, Anne Rice is mainstream. Admitting you are a fan is not a taboo like declaring you are a dominatrix. There are fans who never made it to the ARVLFC balls when they were still going on; there are fans who have no interest in exploring New Orleans outside of the books; and there are fans who detest "Goth" culture but still devour every single book Rice releases. It would have been a far more representative book had it featured a larger diversity of fans. I have met prudes who are uneasy watching kissing scenes on television, yet they read the books over and over again without flinching. Now, if that isn't a testament of Rice's enormous talent and gift, I don't know what is.
However, the book is still wonderfully constructed. The photographs are nothing short of superb, the fan accounts a delight to read, and one really does walk away feeling that maybe those stereotypes are wrong.
Excellent portrayal of a cross section of Anne Rice Fans.......1997-12-18
Jana Marcus did Anne Rice fans a favor by putting this book together. She showed us that we are "normal" (even if the rest of society/literary world doesn't appreciate Anne Rice and her writings.) When the average reader thinks of Anne Rice fans, s/he has the image that the fans pagans, eccentrics and just plain weird. (Usually these are folks that only know the author by her reputation only.) In the Shadow of the Vampire dispells this myth is dispelled. In one book, Jana Marcus has been able to show there is a large cross section of society that calls itself "Anne Rice fans." These fans DO NOT fit neatly into a mold as others would prefer, rather they make their OWN mold. I know, I'm in the book.
Only the Wierdos..........1997-12-05
I am a die hard Anne Rice fan, and an insurance executive. To pick up a book that purports to be written about her fans, and see only the bloodsuckers, goths and sub/doms was not a real picture of who her fans are.
Anne Rice's fans are moms and dads, teenagers, and goths. Her fans probably represent every single type of person in the world. She receives fan mail from Catholic priests, as well as those who want to become immortal. Doctors, lawyers and waitresses read Sleeping Beauty. Anne Rice has become mainstream - her work is not on the fringe of anything and neither are most of her fans.
So, my opinion was that the fans that were interviewed and published in the book attempted to put limits on a woman's work whose appeal is absolutely limitless.
