Book Description
Evolutionary biologists have produced a solid body of evidence to explain patterns of diversification, both within and among species. Recent textbooks are weighted towards studies of animals, which is surprising given that plants are ideally suited for answering evolutionary questions. This book places the wealth of data that have been collected on plants into the unifying framework of game theory. It is the authors' hope that many students will take on this challenge and help the study of the evolutionary ecology of plants to develop as a mature, predictive science.

Good, detailed overview of plant reproductive systems.......2007-03-10
This is a decent, well-documented overview of plant reproductive systems, with much supporting theory as to how and why they evolved. The decidedly theoretical approach works well, but the mathematical underpinnings may be difficult for some with a more empirical background. Nevertheless, this book will probably remain the best general introduction to this topic for quite some time.
Book Description
Nine contributors bring both the phycological (i.e., botanical) and limnological (i.e., ecological) literature into focus to reveal the morphological, reproductive, and physiological characteristics of these microscopic organisms as adaptive evolutionary strategies for survival in stressful and seasonally changing aquatic habitats. The synthesis of these literatures from an organismal and evolutionary perspective is unique. The following important groups of planktonic algae are considered: cyanobacteria, green algae, diatoms, dinoflagellates, cryptomonads, and chrysophyte flagellates. For each algal group, the importance of both growth and loss processes influencing biogeography and seasonality is emphasized.

Book Description
This collection of reviews by leading investigators examines plant reproduction and sexuality within a framework of evolutionary ecology, providing an up-to-date account of the field. The contributors discuss conceptual issues, showing the importance of sex allocation, sexual selection and inclusive fitness, and the dimensions of paternity and maternity in plants. The evolution, maintenance, and loss of self-incompatibility in plants, the nature of 'sex choice' in plants, and sex dimorphism are all explored in detail. Specific forms of biotic interactions shaping the evolution of plant reproductive strategy are discussed, and a taxonomically based review of the reproductive ecology of non-angiosperm plant groups, such as bryophytes, ferns, and algae, is presented. Together these studies focus on the complexities of plant life cycles and the distinctive reproductive biologies of these organisms, while showing the similarities between nonflowering plants and the more thoroughly documented flowering species.
Customer Reviews:
A theoretical book about plant reproductive ecology.......2000-09-18
This book concludes fifteen chapters written by different specialists offers a various theoretical points of views of plant breeding systems. The authors discussed about several early unclear or incomplete but important plant reproductive theories, which have been proved or carefully studied since then. The authors discussed every example and case elaborately and objectively; however, it seemed to be insufficient because of paucity of empirical data in that era. This is still a good book for who have backgrounds in plant reproductive biology and ecology, and want to have primary ideas of plant reproductive theories.

When Jimmy Carter left the White House in 1981, he and his wife, Rosalynn, had to face the same questions many elder Americans encounter when retirement approaches: "How could we accommodate the unpleasant circumstances that had been forced on us? What were our assets and abilities? What were the dependable factors in a good life, and how could we recognize and develop them? Was it at all possible for us to be as satisfied in the future as we had been during some of our most interesting, adventurous, and successful times? Did we have anything much to offer in the years ahead?" In the years since, both Carters have become internationally recognized for their work as authors, teachers, and humanitarians, but as Carter amiably insists in The Virtues of Aging, you don't need to be a former president (or first lady) to make a difference in your life and the lives of others. He urges older Americans to take charge of their lives--by staying active, whether it's through volunteerism or indulgence in personal recreation; by relying on oneself as much as possible; by getting involved with others; and by putting one's affairs in order with an honest self-awareness of the inevitability that even the richest, most rewarding life comes to a close. Like all the books in the Library of Contemporary Thought series, this is a fairly short tome, but it lives up to the best in the series--such as Pete Hamill's News Is a Verb or Seymour Hersh's Against All Enemies--by presenting readers with something to ponder on just about every page.
Book Description
"We are not alone in our worry about both the physical aspect of aging and the prejudice that exists toward the elderly, which is similar to racism or sexism. What makes it different is that the prejudice also exists among those of us who are either within this group or rapidly approaching it. When I have mentioned the title of this book to a few people, most of them responded, 'Virtues? What could possibly be good about growing old?' The most obvious answer, of course, is to consider the alternative to aging. But there are plenty of other good answers--many based on our personal experiences and observations. "

How to enjoy being an old kokker .......2006-04-04
Simple, plain, clear good advice enlived by personal example and story. This is a good book about aging wisely, retaining one's powers as best as one can through the senior years. Former President Carter involuntarily forced to retire at fifty- six faced a double - crisis , identity and financial. He almost lost the family land and farm, but was saved when his peanut holdings were bought by a large consortium. He and his wife Rosalyn became active in new ways, as university teachers, writers, volunteer builders of one home for a needy person each year.
The Carter recipe for enjoying old age involves remaining active, continuing to interact with others, exercising, avoiding the well- known evils of cigarettes and excess drinking.
Carter recognizes that not everyone has the prerogatives of a former President but he maintains that most of us have the resources to go on enjoying life in old age.
It seems to me Carter is a lot wiser in this work than he is in many of his political writings.
This is a good book and has valuable tips which should help towards graceful aging.
Another thought provoking book by Jimmy Carter.......2006-02-26
THE VIRTUES OF AGING by Jimmy Carter
February 25, 2006
Amazon Rating: ****
In THE VIRTUES OF AGING, President Jimmy Carter writes about what a senior citizen can do to feel fulfilled and productive in ones last stage of life. As usual, he is quite candid as he writes about his own life, his marriage to Rosalyn, and recounts stories about his family and friends. I always enjoy reading Carter's non-fiction, as he always has some interesting anecdotes, as well as some wisdom-filled stories that he passes on to his readers. Carter never preaches, and I for one appreciate it. In fact, in this particular book he admits (at the end) that he tried to refrain from quoting much from the bible, as he felt it would detract from the topic. But since the church is a big part of his life, he did talk about his own participation with his church and did quote a few times in appropriate places as he discussed issues on aging.
I have to admit I'm rather biased because I have always admired the work Jimmy Carter has done since his presidency. Knowing about the good works he's done in the past few decades, I do not find it difficult at all to see that he's also left his mark in his writings. He's shared with the world what he has learned through his own past experiences as a son, a father, and grandfather, as well as Governor and President of the United States. I'm slowly collecting all of his books and so far have enjoyed what I have read. THE VIRTUES OF AGING was not as structured as some of his other books have been, but I don't think it was meant to be. It is a collection of thoughts and ramblings of aging gracefully, from his point of view.
Perhaps he's aged too long.......2005-12-11
Jimmy Carter used to be my favorite ex-president. Now, it seems he has aged beyond the point at which he can reason clearly. He goes on Larry King to criticize a former colleague (Zell Miller) for standing in support of the President, AND writes a book, for which he will probably make millions of dollars, to do more of the same. He is using his roles as elder statesman (well-deserved) and Nobel Laureate (well-deserved) to undermine our country; but seems to have forgotten that he was impotent while our hostages were held in Iran for 444 days. You know the saying: "them what can't do, teach". If one of the virtues of aging is exploitation of public opinion for your own advantage (or that of your party), Jimmy Carter is VERY virtuous.
Fabulous Book!!.......2004-05-13
I'm in my mid-40's and found this book a facinating
look at older age. Carter busts the old stereotypes
about sitting in the rocking chair during retirement age and mentions numerous examples of friends and associates in the 70's and 80's who are living enormously productive lives. This book
gives me hope for the future. Even though my last 45 years were probably a little easier than my next 45 will, I find solace in the many examples of warm relationships maintained, hobbies developed and new challenges in later life. A whole-hearted endorsement for this book.
Carter is my favorite former US President.
The book also gave me a great curiousity to look at more information on the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity.

Growing old gracefully.......2003-03-31
"The Virtues of Aging," by former United States President Jimmy Carter, is a down-to-earth nonfiction book about growing old gracefully. Carter mixes interesting statistics with autobiographical information and practical advice.
Carter discusses his work and experiences with a number of organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity. He also discusses the lives of people who made extraordinary accomplishments in their senior years. Carter doesn't shy away from sensitive topics, such as senior sexuality or preparing for one's own death.
One admirable characteristic of Carter's writing is that while it is informed by his own Christian faith, he is also respectful of other belief traditions. Overall, he writes like an unpretentious friend who is sharing his life experience and perspective. Throughout the book, his wife Rosalynn is a constant presence; you get a real sense of the solidity of that relationship.

A Fishkeeper's Guide to Koi.......2005-03-22
Koi are brilliantly colored carp from Japan that are currently enjoying a popularity explosion around the world. Certainly they need more care than the average pond fish, but they provide a vivid spectacle in return. This guide forms an excellent introduction to their management and display. Includes over 100 full color photographs.

Now it's easier than ever for woodworkers to get a perfect finish on every project! This book dispels the myths about wood finishing and explains exactly how and why every finish behaves the way it does.
Customer Reviews:
Even a Novice can learn from this expert!.......2007-09-04
Ive learned more just reading this book and can't wait to try out all the tips and tricks Bob has put into this book. All aspects (even some I'll never use) are covered! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finish their special project!
Great teaching tool........2007-07-20
This book is very excellent for picking up a few tips and learning new things. I've used it more than I thought I would and really appreciate the professional manner in which it explains things. Many pictures to "Show" the finished product. This is very helpful in comparing the end result. It's a great addition to the shop. Try one, you'll like it.
understanding wood finishing how to select and right finish.......2007-05-07
i already do restoration but this book opened my eyes a hell of a lot its a fantastic book and anybody that restores for a leaving or as an hoby should own one of these books
Concise, well written, comprehensive.......2007-04-10
Highly recommended. Anyone who has ever applied a finish to a piece of wood, from professional wood worker to Saturday afternoon handyman, will benefit from this book.
Simply the Best!.......2007-04-09
There is really no need to say anything more than that...this book is without equal in the area of finishing information. It is comprehensive in scope, well researched (backed up with years of personal experience)and presented in a clear and entertaining format.
Many experts in the shop have faced with great trepidation the blank screen of the computer when they have attempted to impart with the rest of us their years of gathered wisdom and abilities. Bob Flexner seemed to have slid easily into the author's chair and rewards all woodworkers with a volume of immense readability.
If you simply build things in the workshop, this book is of no value to you. If you ever intend to apply a finish to a piece then this book is one you should definitely own!
I am glad to add my voice to the dozens here who have already praised this book and agree wholeheartedly with their positive assessments.
My prediction is that if you add this book to your shop library you will feel the same way.

Misleading with no gardening infomation.............2005-05-01
One of the more frustrating aspects of Patricia Telesco's, THE HERBAL ARTS, is her failure to organize the herbs by their Latin names (she provides a Latin name with each entry, but many of these entries have been reclassified since the book was published or are not very well explained). This shortcoming makes shopping for a specific herb difficult, as the more reputable plant suppliers rely on Latin names to organize their inventories. Although some plant catalogs group plants by colloquial names, if you are seeking a specific plant for a particular ailment, the search may prove confusing without the exact identifier, and the plant you finally select may be ineffective at best and dangerous at worst. (For example, the Bergamot that gives Earl Grey Tea its distinctive scent is probably the essential oil (Citrus bergamia) which comes from Asia, not the flower in my perennial bed (Beebalm or Monarda didyma sometimes known as Oswego Tea) native to the Eastern US, or Monarda citriodora the Lemon Bergamot native to the US West. Telesco does not discuss Bergamot, which might be just as well, but she also fails to mention Oregano (Origanum -- sometimes known as wintersweet or Majoram. She mentions the latter, but not all Oreganos are Oreganum majorana so she needs a crossreference as a minimum).
As I mentioned, the author almost always provides one Latin name per entry, however, often several different species names are often involved. For example, "marigolds" are listed as Marigolds or Calendula in her book, not Tagetes, which is how many botanists classify them. If you want to add Marigold to soup or use it to rinse your hair, you probably want Calendula Officinalis. But if you want to deter nematodes in the garden, you want Tagetes. Similarly, Chamomile may be Chamomile or Matricaria - one an annual and the other a perennial (the annual is thought to taste better). Tarragon may be Artemisia or Tagetes, which takes us back to Marigolds.
Other than horticultural confusion and lacunae, this book includes some interesting "spiritual" claims, but I have not read the ancients, so I do not know which herbs were preferred by which Gods and Goddesses or Spirits, with the exception of Asclepias who left little doubt, and Venus with her Dittany (Oreganum dictamnus) who is pictured at Pompeii bringing the wonder drug to the wounded Aeneas (I know this from other sources).
Apparently Ms Telesco located various reputable and questionable sources that link various flora with ancient deities, so her claims are not unfounded. She provides a comprehensive bibliography, though I would have preferred to have seen footnotes linking her sources with her text. The book includes no photos or drawings to help the confused. You would do better to lay out the $$ and purchase the Van Wyck and Wink book on MEDICINAL PLANTS OF THE WORLD.
A slightly different herbal.......2001-07-24
When I first saw this book, I was a little leery of buying it. What do I need with another herb book? They all have the same info, just rehashed. Well, this one was different. Her section (like an encyclopedia) of herbs is not as extensive as other books and deals mostly with the common herbs. However she has many recipes and ideas for the herbs. Not just teas and potpourri, but lotions, soaps, soda pop, toothpaste, etc. My only complaint is the inclusion of the word "spirituality" in the title of the book. There is very little. But one can find numerous books on herbal magick elsewhere.
A nice quick reference.......2000-04-22
This is a good, concise herbal book containing history, folklore, recipes & cooking tips, and more. There is also a decent appendix at the back, listing herbs and their corresponding planets, spirits/deities, magical correspondence (or use), and element. You might be able to find some of the information in this book in others, but it can fill out your library nicely, and contains information not regularly found.
A little bit of everything!.......1998-12-10
Very informative book with something for gardeners, herbalists, cooks, crafts people... just about everyone will enjoy this title
Customer Reviews:
wonderful book.......2007-02-15
This was a very beautiful and peaceful book that came in a time when it was very much needed. It helped me slow down and understand that every day is very spiritual; that life maintenance is a part of who we are and if we just accept that, it makes everything much more simple. It helped me enrich my children's life, to finally accept them for whom they are and in so doing enrich my own life. Besides, if you have a little chant or song to sing while you're doing chores, handwork, settling down for a nap, or whatever, it always helps make it more fun. And I liked the tips and ideas on how to incorporate different rituals into your day. This book won't be for everyone, or for every lifestyle, but for those it speaks to, it is wonderful book. I highly recomend it.
Seven Times The Sun.......2004-05-01
Seven Times The Sun is not for everyone. It could be a springboard, offering times of the day and night where parents might want to incorporate some kind of rituals to provide their children with a stable and balanced life. But the songs, poems and traditions offered in Shea Darian's book are hokey and contrived at best, cumbersome and artificial at worst. None of the other reviews indicated the religious or spiritual aspect of the book. Darian is a minister, and all of the poems and songs have a subtle religious bent. True, parents should teach children to be thankful for all they have. But I'm just thankful Amazon has a customer-friendly return policy!
Peaceful........2003-11-16
This book was recommended by an instuctor of an early childhood class I am taking. I love the easy and quiet way that the writings take the reader through the day, year and life. While reading this book, my grandmother passed away. The pages of poems were great comfort to my family and myself. Thank you to Shea Darian for the peace her words brought to us.
Unique and informative.......2003-06-20
This book changed my life!
Establishing rituals with my child was difficult and I lacked the creativity to aid in making our difficult "transitional" times more peaceful. Seven Times The Sun helped me not only with their recommendations but it fostered my own creativity on how to modify particular "ideas" that fit our lifestyle.
I don't think this book is for everyone, but if you have an open mind and are not afraid to try new and different strategies to enrich your children...buy this book. This book opened me up to creating rituals and making the most out of everyday situations....and cherishing each and every moment with my child. It opened up an even greater spirituality than what we had prior!
Peace
A lovely collection of songs and poems.......2003-03-30
This is a book you keep out and available. We use it often and enjoy the rhythms of our days. The songs and poems are the best -I find the stories too brief and bare. But this book is worth it just for the songs. There are songs for acknowledging the whole range of feelings - and the different ways of being from calm early morning to active play to naps and sleepytimes.
If you have small children, get this book. You'll be glad you did.

The Handbook for the Wilde Neophyte.......2000-01-14
While this little book may not rank highly in the esteem of the Wilde scholars it is nonetheless a fascinating introduction to the legend that was OSCAR. Along with an entertaining and amusing text are wonderful pictures throughout which chronicle Wilde's stellar literary ascent and the incendiary downfall. Well-written , informative and fun.
