      5 out of 5 stars For anyone wanting to discover all of Sicily's wild and beautiful landscapes this is a great tool!.......2007-06-19

      I lived in Sicily for 3 years as a military wife. I've purchased many books on Sicily, most tell of it's history or hotel recommendations which are great for tourists or first time readers but I wanted more. I found this book during my last year there. What a great book for showing me places I never heard about or would have found on my own. I wish I had found it sooner. Most of my favorite memories were on hikes with my family that I found with this book!

      Sunflower Landscapes have a simple easy layout to follow. The first half of the book is for recommeneded beautiful drives and great picnic opportunities through small towns and panoramic coastal vistas. Many of these car tours are great ways to discover remote towns or parks off the beaten path. The book is set up very well and ordered with a pull out map at the back corresponding to numbered drives and hikes. They are also grouped according to region. This is all helpful to link up car tours with hikes in the area, the second half of the book. The hikes are well detailed with a small photo, difficulty level, distance, elevation gain, and a topographical map as well for that particular walk. Levels vary from easy family hikes to experienced only hikes. However with all this information the book manages not to get bogged down. It's slim and easy to carry and navigate with. Finding some of the locations was a challenge but I don't blame the book. Sicilians aren't big into their parks or hiking. You are truly off the beaten path. Many times we were the only ones out there along with a few farm animals which was fantastic!

      Sicily is also rightfully well known for their greek historical ruins. Many hikes/car tours incorporate these spots which means you won't miss a thing. There are usually a few different hiking level options around these historical points of interest giving you a view you wouldn't have had otherwise.

      For a first time visitor to the island only wishing to spend a week or so seeing the sights, I would first recommend a good well known guide book. This book would serve primarily to compliment your guide book. For example in the well visited coastal town of Cefalu there is a hike that takes you to the top of the mountain and castle ruins that towers the city. I had wanted to visit this town many times. However if I had visited it before I had this book I never would have known about the hike and my experience would not have been as wonderful.

      For someone who truly wants to explore the natural beauty of this rustic island, this is a great book!

      We are moving back and I can't wait to explore even more Sicily with this great book! This may sound corny, but I honestly felt I had stumbled on a secret when I found this book. Finally I could experience Sicily in another way outside of it's well known towns/cities, food, and shopping.

      I've tried many travel books and have found format and interest crucial to the success of the book. I loved the simple well organized layout of the Sicily book so much I've bought a few other Sunflower Landscape books. I used the Ireland and Scottish Highland books and found them great as well. The hikes weren't as difficult to find as hiking is much more established in those countries.

      Overall, I found the Sunflower Landscape series make excellent companions to any guide book.

                      Demonstrating how color can be used to create unique and vibrant beadwork designs, this guide will interest beaders at all skill levels. Color is discussed in depth, including the basics of the color wheel, the psychological and symbolic associations of all the colors of the spectrum, plus whites, blacks, grays, metallics, and neutrals. Other essentials covered include blending techniques, how a bead's surface finish affects its color, and how color can be used to create and accentuate pattern, rhythm, and movement within a beadwork design. The more than 20 projects-each of which represents a specific color scheme or palette-include a discussion of the palette, multiple color illustrations, a beadwork pattern, and a listing of the beads required to complete that design.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      4 out of 5 stars Very useful book with good information!.......2007-08-16

                      Last month during a beading class, both the instructor and a classmate mentioned this book when I said something about how I always struggle with color. I was eager to purchase it, and am really pleased with all the information it gives!

                      As other reviewers mentioned, Margie Deeb spends a great deal of time talking about color theory, and she does so in an easy-to-follow way. She also talks about how certain colors evoke certain moods and feelings, and provides many color photos of examples so you can see what she means.

                      She also provides a fantastic overview of how to use a color wheel. For instance, I knew about using a color wheel by looking at the squares and triangles where three or four colors meet, but I didn't realize all the other ways you can use a color wheel to find complementary colors. For me, this information alone was worth buying this book for.

                      Another strength of the book is that she provides bead numbers for Delica color palettes. This was very interesting, but I tend to use size 11 and size 15 seed beads more frequently, so I'm not sure if the color numbers will help me as much as a future reference. Her inclusion of these color schemes is still great, though, since they give me something to base a design around.

                      The only downsides (and they are small ones) is that the sample projects are not really to my liking (they tend to be things like wall hangings) and that the writing can be a bit overkill when she describes the moods that certain colors evoke. Overall, though, I would definitely still purchase this book since it contains so much information and is reasonably priced and because I bought it more for the color theory than for the included projects (and I know we all have very different tastes). It's definitely worth the cost of the book!

                      5 out of 5 stars Anyone interested in color combinations should have this.......2007-07-24

                      I bought this book for information on color combinations for beading and jewelry making. I have found that I keep picking it up and reading and re-reading sections, the book is very inspirational. I also feel this book is valuable in other areas in which I use color, for instance stained glass and painting. Don't just consider this for beading, consider it if you are an interior decorator or if in your hobby or work color is important, I believe this book will be a go to book for years to come. It has been a long time since I have found a reference book that was so useful. You won't be sorry you bought it if you have a passion for color but feel you need a little help in combining colors or even choosing a main color for a particular effect.

                      5 out of 5 stars Color Theory for Beaders.......2007-05-16

                      I found The Beaders Guide To Color by Margie Deeb an excellent bookon the theory of color and why some colors work better than others. It is liberally illustrated with samples of beading and the diagrams of suggested palettes.The text on harmony and values of color are very clear. I particularly liked the section on the emotional and symbolic meaning of color, which I have not seen so clearly described . This is a great book to enhance any of the users art work, as well as beading

                      Not everyone is blessed with the ability to put colours together, you only have to walk down the street to see that!, If you are not sure, then this is the book for you. All the base colour combinations are shown clearly, i.e. how to choose a Triad, Complementary, Natural hues etc they are all covered with a multitude of others and will be invaluable as a resource. I especially liked the list of Delicas including their number with the projects to assist you. I can't say I would do the vast majority of projects as my personal style is more organic and freeform, but I still loved it as a resource tool. Great instructions, good quality photos, a welcome addition to your beading library.

                          4 out of 5 stars Flavorful intro to Seattle and Northwest history.......2005-08-23

                          This is the great popular history of Seattle. Learn about the pioneers behind the downtown streetnames: Denny, Stewart, and more. Yes, there was history here before Grunge -- and it was just as earthy.

                          The colorful stories just don't stop:
                        • the founding and abandonment of Alki (now West Seattle);
                        • the "Battle of Seattle," with the settlers hiding in a fort;
                        • Chief Sealth's myth and legacy;
                        • the Great Seattle Fire that burnt down Pioneer Square, and the landfill into the Sound that rebuilt it;
                        • how Seattle overtook Tacoma as the dominant city on Puget Sound by luring miners bound for the Yukon Gold Rush with the promise of "the best whorehouses north of San Francisco" and, of course, provisions for the trail and for prospecting;
                        • the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition on the University of Washington grounds, designed by the Olmstead Brothers (of Central Park fame);
                        • Seattle's mixed role in the anti-Chinese mob violence that swept up the Pacific coast in the 1880s;
                        • the outrageously mammoth public works projects sluicing Denny Hill flat, using the dirt for landfill on the waterfront, and creating the worlds largest island in the harbor;
                        • the Seattle General Strike of 1919 that prompted a nation-wide red scare;

                        • and more and more.

                          It makes me breathless just to type this! A very enjoyable read, in a breezy story-telling style, Skid Road gives you more of a flavor of where Seattle came from in just a few hours than anything else.

                                        This book pioneered the term "father hunger" — the emptiness, and resulting food and body image disorders, experienced by women whose fathers were physically or emotionally absent. Based on ten years of further study, this second edition of Father Hunger details the origins of the syndrome and its effect on the family, with new practical solutions to help dads and daughters understand and improve their relationships. An expanded section for educators and therapists offers strategies and techniques for preventing and treating this complex problem.

                                        2 out of 5 stars Disappointment to anyone seeking in-depth analysis.......2007-07-19

                                        I was hoping this book would take a much more academic, intellectual look at psychoanalysis and the study of father-daughter relationships. Instead, the language and tone are simplistic, the anecdotes are quaint and pleasant, and the overall depth of research seems minimal. It may be a fine place to start as an overview on the topic, but this is definitely not the book to buy if you're searching for anything serious or memorable.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Fathers are the Core Behind a Woman's Self-Empowerment.......2007-02-13

                                        This is a brilliant book on the connection between a father's relationship with his daughter and the manifestation of her body image into adulthood. Time and time again it has been proven that the absence of a loving emotionally healthy and nurturing relationship with a father substantially increases a woman's risk for a variety of self-esteem issues, including weight problems. The father is the template to which a woman relates to men, sees herself in interaction with men, and perceives her values with men, and men often are seen as the world given the patriarchial overtones in society and commerce.

                                        In this book, Dr. Maine concentrates on how the father can be instrumental in protecting his daughter from the onslaught of emotionally-driven complications in body image. Often when a young girl is pursuiing thinness it is out of a need for attention. In adolescence this is acute in its unconscious desire for a man's attention with the blossoming of hormones and puberty. Mass media tells young girls that love is only possible through physical appearance. If a young girl has no concept of uncondition love from the one and only man who she needs it from - her biological or adoptive father (NOT a stepfather, they are actually dangerous to stepdaughters) ... she will be indoctrinated by the belief and it will be her sense of reality that only her body and its state of perfection guarantees performance-based ego-centric love.

                                        Dr. Maine outlines the role of fathers, what they can do, and gives them brilliant advice in this book on how to love their daughters and protect them from the illusions of the world. BRAVO!

                                        Once again ... daddy's girls get all the breaks. It is as if only the father can guarantee immunity from predatory men if he sets a high standard in his daughter's mind. The predatory nature of a mysoginist culture is often a culprit behind why women are literally dying to be thin just to get bread crumbs of shallow attention for undeserving men. Only women who have their father's unconditional love stand a chance at being firm and rooted enough in that love to see the myth and lie that being thin is the passage way to being appreciated.

                                        Fathers of daughters with eating disorders need help understanding the disorder and how to overcome their frustration with not being able to "fix" their daughter. This book opens the door to begin the process of restoring a more normal and effective role for the father.

                                        While not the most "user friendly" writing style for the non-professional, it is easily understood and offers much information to help men (and the women they love) deal effectively with everyone impacted by the eating disorder...themselves, their spouse and, most importantly, their child.

                                        Although I am a physician, I am also the father of a daughter with an eating disorder and read this book upon the advice of her therapist. I am very glad to say that it has started my daughter and me on a path to a much richer relationship and that she is on the road to recovery.

                                        N.C. Wyeth's wondrous paintings of The Last of the Mohicans, Robinson Crusoe, and Treasure Island have given visual form to these stories for generations of readers. Wyeth's extraordinary pictures still carry all the power they had in their heyday. And communal, millennial-bound nostalgia for the first half of the 20th century gives the paintings, if possible, an even more sentimental glow. This meticulous, encompassing study of the tempestuous, difficult, brilliant illustrator also delves into the entire clan of famous Wyeth artists, including Andrew (who was offered a bribe to delay his marriage), and Peter Hurd (who married Andrew's sister Henriette then escaped with her to New Mexico).

                                        David Michaelis has done an extraordinary amount of research, and the book should mesmerize Wyeth fans. But he seems to doubt his own ability to make this dramatic material come alive, for he resorts to false suspense--using a baby's death and the suggestion of foul play on page 1 to hook the reader, but nearly 200 pages later allows that there's not really any evidence for his conjectures. And he liberally employs italics, giving the text an insistent tone that is at times intrusive. Nonetheless, Michaelis adroitly chronicles Wyeth's complicated, fraught relationship with his family. And he is especially perceptive in his analysis of N.C.'s stormy ties to his mentor, Howard Pyle. The artist's genteel inability to talk money, even during the Depression; his devotion to his neurotic mother; and the magical world of Chadd's Ford, where he watchfully, jealously raised his children, are all beautifully described. This is a valuable, multifaceted look at a passionate, difficult subject. In the end, Wyeth emerges, warts and all, as a complex individual, whose inner life was thoroughly entwined with every aspect of his art. --Peggy Moorman

                                        Book Description

                                        His name summons up our earliest images of the beloved books we read as children. His illustrations for Scribner's Illustrated Classics (Treasure Island, Kidnapped, The Last of the Mohicans, The Yearling) are etched into the collective memory of generations of readers. He was hailed as the greatest American illustrator of his day. For forty-three years, starting in 1902, N.C. Wyeth painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and murals, as well as illustrations for a long shelf of world literature. Yet despite worldwide acclaim, he judged himself a failure, believing that illustration was of no importance.

                                        David Michaelis tells the story of Wyeth's family through four generations -- a saga that begins and ends with tragedy -- and brings to life the huge-spirited, deeply complicated man, and an America that was quickly vanishing.

                                        An informative book on what motivated NC to do what he did, but not much on how he arrived at certain colors, composition, studies before completing a major work, etc. There is a lot of information that seems unnecessary, but it all comes together at the end. If you want to know the progression of his work, it is here; but there is not alot on technique.

                                        My brother loaned me a copy of this book because we both collect American illustrations. That qualifies some of my enthusiasm for this book a bit. I am already a fan of the golden age(s) of American illustration.
                                        The life of N. C. Wyeth is impressively detailed by the author. He mostly uses detailed and extensive letters written by the family to piece together what would seem a very accurate account of N.C.'s life. This book helped piece together some of the influences I assumed N.C. had throughout his life. From Pyle to the war, depression, to family, it was a very complicated life for the entire family. A great read with enough personal melodrama to keep it very interesting. My only complaint was the occasional writing quirk where the author sometime wrote of the future while writing mostly a chronological book. It's hard to describe, but readers will notice this and occasionally get a little confused by the style. That's my only negative comment. (And frankly, I do not see how this writing method could have been avoided since some of the information was necessary in order to piece the story together.)

                                        The forementioned "Biography at its best" is fitting. David Michaelis went the extra mile to gather coupious historical data on Wyeth and his background. The evidence given paints a picture of the very soul of this man, almost to the point of smelling his oil-stained hands.

                                        It is remarkable to catch a glimpse of this energetic and powerful artist who somehow balanced family, busines and sanity by applying passion to all he encountered. Whether or not our hero was particularly faithful to his wife can be argued, but his evident ability to excel in whatsoever he set out to do is inspiring.

                                        A great read for those interested in disciplining one's self to master the studio and the home.

                                        Although I was familiar with the paintings of Andrew & Jamie Wyeth, I wasn't aware of N.C. until I read his letters in Dorie McCullough Lawson's wonderful collection, "Posterity: Letters of Great Americans to Their Children." The brilliant writing in those letters, and the story of the tragic accident that killed him and his little grandson, made me want to know more. It led me to this book. I've just finished it, and can't stop thinking about it. If a novelist made up this saga, one might say it was just too fantastic. And yet the most fantastic thing of all is that it's true. David Michaelis weaves the tale, not just of N.C. Wyeth, but of his family and his times. Although so many people are introduced, the writing is clear and vibrant, and one never loses track of who's who. No novel could be more compelling than this saga, with twists and turns that almost had me gasping. Biography just doesn't get any better than this. Whether or not you're interested in Art, it is well worth your time. Bravo to Mr. Michaelis!

                                        5 out of 5 stars Even for those who have no idea who the Wyeth family is........2000-06-05

                                        I don't know if there is another Family that has continuously contributed to the world of art, and done so with such skill, as the 5 generations of Wyeths whose story is told in this work.

                                        The title of my review may seem a bit odd but I believe those who read this book will find it appropriate. I read this book when it originally was published and then recently read it again. You need not be anything more than someone who loves to read to enjoy this book. While I am a great admirer of Mr. Andrew Wyeth's work and to a lesser extent other members of the Wyeth Family, I have no Art History education. The beauty of this work is that it is an incredible story on it's own, that additionally the story is true with 2 Wyeth Family members still painting, only enhances the reading. The fact this is not fiction makes the story all the more remarkable.

                                        If you have already read about Mr. Andrew Wyeth's work you certainly will gain a great deal of insight as to why he may view his art as he does. Another wonderful book that focuses on Mr. Andrew Wyeth is by Richard Merryman, "Andrew Wyeth A Secret Life". It often seems that great artists in a range of artistic fields seem to have more than their share of drama in their lives. This is certainly the case with this 5 generational span of the Wyeths. There is also a great deal of tragedy and sadness.

                                        Whether or not you are aware of or enjoy the work of The Wyeth Clan, they have and will continue to remain of great importance to Art History. Ranging from the illustrations by N.C Wyeth of dozens of books that are known to us all, to some of the most recognized images in the world as is the case with Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World" from 1948, chances are you do know of the Wyeths.

                                        The story most don't know is of the woman who is in the mentioned painting, her lifetime, and the stories and paintings that resulted from the house that she is looking towards in the painting. Not all of what you will learn is comfortable, some is sad; some behavior from members of the Family is eccentric to say the least.

                                        What you will experience is a sweeping story that continues to this day. If an endorsement by an internationally acclaimed Artist would help, read what Mr. Barry Moser had to say about this book. And then go look at the book he was illustrating, the work he set aside to read this story. I cannot think of a more reliable recommendation.

                                        Know the Family, know the work, or read as a novel. You will not de disappointed.

                                                  Book Description

                                                  1914. Pruitt, a widow and mother who washed clothes for a living in Denver, planned to work as a housekeeper for some rancher while learning all she'd need to know about homesteading a place for herself. In 1909 she went to work for Clyde Stewart, whose ranch was near Burnt Fork, Wyoming, and within six weeks she married him. Her delightful letters written from the time of her arrival until 1913, authentically depict an Old West that has been progressively obscured by those who portray it most often.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars Letters of a Woman Homesteader.......2007-07-09

                                                  Mrs. Elinore Rupert had recently lost her husband in a railroad accident when she first went to Denver to work as housecleaner and laundress to support herself and her two-year-old daughter. Later, seeking to better herself, she accepted employment in Wyoming as a housekeeper for a well-to-do Scotch cattleman. It became her new home.

                                                  Reprinted from the 1914 edition, "Letters of a Woman Homesteader" is a book of true letters that were written by Elinore Rupert, beginning in 1909, telling the day-to-day story of her new life with her daughter and new husband on a cattle ranch.

                                                  In almost every letter, Elinore tells a story based on actual incidents in the lives of her interesting neighbors. Each is truly entertaining because it is a part of the past that most of us have never known, and she tells it so vividly that you'll almost feel cheated to have missed being a part of it yourself.

                                                  Though it would probably never make the bestseller's list, I'm enjoying this "comfortable" book from our non-fiction collection this week. Sometimes we just need to leave the murder mysteries behind and "get comfortable".
