Customer Reviews:
Very fine small first aid manual.......2007-03-08
Backcountry First Aid is an excellent choice for a small manual or compendium about first aid treatments when you are in the outdoors. It is four inches by five and a half, and 120 pages long, so it will fit in a first aid kit or bag. The back cover has an "Action Index" that refers you to the pages for 47 different conditions or accidents. Topics like Bites and Stings, hypothermia, shock, water disinfection, etc, etc. The topics are covered very well - succinct and as comprehensive as you could hope for in a portable manual.
Of course it pays to read the manual before heading out, and in fact is valuable for anyone who wants to be ready for an accident or sudden sickness, whether in the wilderness, driving to work, or in your backyard.
Highly recommended.
Excellent quick guide to wilderness medicine.......2002-06-01
This is an easy to read nuts and bolts manual for wilderness medicine. Pictures and step by step instructions are easy to follow. The book is small and can pack easily and lightly.
Great Book.......1999-04-16
This is an awesome book to include in any first aid kit. I run my own outdoor adventure business and typically include this book in all of my first aid kits. It is concise and easy to understand, not to mention an invaluable reference in the backcountry.

Customer Reviews:
Knitters Handbook.......2007-09-21
This book has a great deal of wonderful information and I will be using it often
Knitting Book for Geeks.......2007-09-01
Montsy Stanley's book is a knitting book for geeks - for people who WANT to know two dozen methods for casting on and off (and when best to use them - Stanley is good about saying WHEN to do what), three ways for avoiding holes when turning short rows, more than a dozen ways to increase, several different decreases and 14 ways to knit a selvedge.
The book contains every knitting technique Montsy Stanley knew in 1986 (she admits herself that she doesn't know everything - for example, there's nothing about magic loop or two circs) and in that respect offers the best 'information per dollar' value of all knitting books on the market today.
However, it is not a book for beginners! The instructions are not always very detailed, and not always very easy to understand (I've seen much better explanations of Kitchener Stitch!) The terminology differs sometimes a bit from what I'm used to: Stanley calls a "bridge" what I'd call a "steek", and there's a few others. Besides, the book lists the techniques in a general way (and gives general examples for using them) - there's no step-by-step instruction for projects. The book lists several different way of doing buttonholes and pockets, but it doesn't explain how to knit a whole sweater.
There's also no patent recipes - quite often Stanley says "do swatches to decide what you like best".
So, it won't be the only knitting book you'll ever need, but it's a great reference for experienced, thinking knitters!
No a Beginner book..........2007-07-21
Illustration and words do not explain clearly...
Sometimes, it's just short words...seems like the writer too lazy to write down all the information...and assume that the readers will (or already) understand themselves...
it's not a really-really handbook...i think it's more like an information book...a handbook should be clear, not just complete...
Excellent.......2007-05-06
This is a book that every knitter should have in their library. I'm so glad someone told me about it.
Excellent Reference Tool.......2006-07-12
This book has helped me out with techniques where pattern instructions have failed. Sure it doesn't have glossy photos, but I've picked this one up for help countless times. It even has an explanation for the yarn care label graphics. Its not a book to sit down and read, but great to pick up for reference -- and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Alan Titchmarsh grows on us once again..............2000-06-03
A beautiful and delightful visit to British gardens, hosted by Alan Titchmarsh, one of Englands most well-known gardeners. I too love Ground Force and this book, written prior to the series premiere, has much of Titchmarsh's warm personality displayed on it's pages. A must have, for Titchmarsh fans, or anyone who just loves to garden or likes beautiful gardening books.
A Gardner's Treat.......2000-03-21
I truly enjoyed this book. As a die-hard fan of "Ground Force" (Alan's show which is broadcast on BBC America) it was like having a visit with Alan right in my own home. And, since I also am interested in Britain and everything British, touring the different gardens - famous as well as not so well known - made reading the book a double pleasure. The pictures are beautiful. And the descriptions are like walking through the garden paths with a friend. If, like me, you're a fan of Alan, a lover of Britain and the British, or just a fan of gardens and gardening I think you'll find this book a welcome treat.

Book Description
Over the years, artist Elizabeth Blackadder has sketched and painted every variety of plant that grows in her garden. While her watercolors are meticulously accurate, the graphic placing of the blooms, leaves, and stems and the bold expression of color far transcend the realm of botanical art. In Favourite Flowers, Blackadder's exquisite watercolors are collected for the first time. Accompanying the paintings is commentary by gardening author Deborah Kellaway, who considers each of the artist's favorite flowers: irises, poppies, tulips, lilies, and orchids. She also provides a history of each plant, its place in painting and in the garden, as well as brief cultivation notes. An irresistible gift book for lovers of art and the garden.

Book Description
Few of life's relationships compare to that of a father and daughter. From the first time she grasps his hand and says her first words, to the day she moves out on her own, the bond between them is ever evolving: dad goes from childhood hero, feared inspector of boyfriends, to the sage friend of adulthood. Daughters mature from perfect little angels into rebellious teens to accomplished women who are dad's pride and joy. Chicken Soup for the Father and Daughter Soul celebrates this special relationship with stories about childhood, the trying years of adolescence, the poignancy of leaving home and even the years when daughters often become caretakers. The stories in this special volume are sure to evoke the fondest of memories and rekindle the bond between dads and their little girls. Key Features Chapters include: On Love, Substitute Dad, Forever Daddy's Little Girl, Healing Moments, Letting Go, A Matter of Perspective. Each inspiring story will evoke readers' own memories and deepen their love. These stories will reunite fathers and daughters, rekindle their bond and strengthen their love. This book will serve to increase their communication, "saying" what may have gone unspoken over the years. Chapter openers will feature heartwarming graphics.
Customer Reviews:
Good for inspiration on building a business.......2006-10-17
We're all familiar with the Chicken Soup series so no need to talk about layout and all ... this book has some good, inspiring stories of real entreprenuers, many you'll know telling how they got where they are. I use it for inspiration, read one a night and keep youre head on straight. Short review but good book, not a lot to say further.
What are you waiting for?.......2006-03-27
Like a lot of people, men in particular, I've seen this "Chicken Soup" series of books for years now, but had never read one. That is, until my daughter gave me a copy of CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE FATHER AND DAUGHTER SOUL, as a gift recently. I have to admit, it isn't just filled with mushy stories like I expected, but rather is a collection of various circumstances revolving around the special relationship between a man and his daughter.
These are real stories, written by real people, about real events that are similar to what all father/ daughter relationships go through. This particular volume is broken into 9 different chapters, each covering different components of life's happenings, and each with about a dozen or so stories somehow related to the subject matter of that chapter.
The book is also sprinkled with a handful of cartoon joke pages. The book concludes with a one page bio on each of the five authors and a single paragraph bio on each contributor. This book will make you laugh. It will make you cru. Mostly, it will preserve and strengthen the special blessing in life that is like no other, .... The relationship of father and his princess.
...precious memories, sweetest moments..........2005-06-13
What is the understood miracle about the relationship of a daddy with his daughter or a daughter with her daddy? Jack Canfield shares many precious memories and sweetest moments with these heartwarming recollections that allude to the beautiful mystery of the daddy/daughter connection. From one story to the next, the daddy/daughter heart and soul exudes deepest love so graciously and gratefully. Whether through laughter or tears, the emotions felt from reading these stories brought forth many of my own forgotten memories. WOW!!!Thanks to Jack and Mark for sharing this fantastic collection that, once again, focuses on the best 'stuff' in Life.
Simply marvelous stories to captivate the soul........2005-05-04
Kudos to Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Nancy Autio, Patty Aubery and LeAnn Thieman for compiling the wonderful stories in Chicken Soup for the Father/Daughter Soul. My story, Hidden Wings is included in the book and I am proud to be a part of the Chicken Soup series. Thanks to all of you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful episode. All the stories will leave you breathless, yearning for childlike thoughts of the past embracing you with tenderness and love.

Only The Dead Came Home: Vietnam's Hidden Casualties
ASIN: 1930859422 |
Book Description
Warriors are not bornThey are made. By accident of birth, time and circumstance they are forged under the hammer and tong of battle. In this furnace they grow hard or die. One who survived only to be forever changed is Andy O'Meara, Jr. A sensitive boy with dreams of studying law at Yale was thrust by a domineering father, himself an Army General, into the hard world of West Point. At the academy O'Meara's sensitivity became liability. To survive as the lowest form of life in the academythe plebehe learned to hide his feelings as he had in an abusive home.
The toughness he found within prepared him for the test of combat, where he substituted rage for fear, violence for wordsskills which, though they may ensure survival in combat, leave the survivor one of the walking wounded, and left O'Meara with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
In a career spanning three decades in uniform, Colonel O'Meara witnessed sacrifice by American servicemen in Cold War Europe and Vietnam. In Vietnam, as a young ARVN advisor, he spoke their tongue, ate their rice, and came to love his Vietnamese comrades as brothers in arms. When later ordered to betray them, at the risk of his career, he refused. A wounded O'Meara returned home to find an America changed, an America where those fallen in battle had become the enemy, an America where a liberal media had turned the tide of public opinion against the war and served as cheerleaders for a peace movement persecuting American servicemen.
More than memoir, Accidental Warrior is the story of a war lost, not on the battlefield, but in the hearts and minds of a people. Here are the failures of the Johnson Administration leading to the expansion of America's role in the conflict. Here is the media's distorted view and its impact on foreign policy. Here is the career-long campaign by an officer against misguided efforts at economy jeopardizing the well-being of his men. Here, too, in his own words, is the life of an accidental warrior, a man who might have been you or I, forced into the role of warrior who made war his life, and yet bears its scars.
Customer Reviews:
The Author Has Not Healed.......2006-03-05
This is the story of a man that is so rightoeusly correct - and almost everybody else is wrong. Despite his sensitive nature and his traumatic childhood trying to live up to his father's expectations - he still gets through his father's rigorous alma mater. But he makes a go of it in the Army - despite experiencing searing pain through two combat tours in Vietnam. On top of all this the author is angry that the 'liberal media' were traitors to the country by reporting the war inaccurately. It seems the media were antagonistic to the war because LBJ lied to them - and so the media had to get back at the country by radicalizing itself.
pray that the author will find peace and learn that when one thinks his country is making a terrible mistake that it is important that people make their concerns known. I thank the author for serving his country as he though it was right. He like so many of us were seduced by Kennedy's "Ask not...". I am sorry that the author saw so very few competent and honorable officers in the US Army in the 60's and the 70's.
How a tortured soul became a warrior.......2004-01-27
This is the story of Andy O'Meara, who never intended to be a soldier. His plans were quashed by an overbearing father, who had his own notions of a career for his son. As a result of parental pressure, he went through West Point, but admits he didn't have his heart in it, and didn't do as well academically as he should have done.
Once in the Army, he managed to get a bad reputation at the outset, one that dogged him (literally -- read the book) throughout the rest of his career. Nevertheless, he "soldiered on." The book describes his Vietnam tour up to his being evacuated as wounded, his tour of duty in Germany and then the U.S., both with an armored division and later the Army Staff.
Much of his story deals with the way the Army was mismanaged throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and how this affected the troops. The reader gets to see the peronsal effects of the mismanagement on the troops themselves, through the author's eyes. In particular, he condemns Defense Secretary Robert McNamara for robbing forces elsewhere to fund the war in Vietnam. (I spent much of my 25-year military career as an operations analyst. I share his opinion of McNamara.)
He doesn't spare himself either in the telling. He describes the breakup of his marriage, placing much of the blame on himself. No harsh words about his "ex," just straightforward description.
Overall it's the story of a man who went through some trials that would have broken a lesser man. He's honest about how much of his problems were his own fault.
For those who were in Vietnam or who served in a Cold War assignment, it will ring true. For those who want to understand what those years did to the men who lived through them, it will give the unvarnished story. I highly recommend it.
One thing should be kept in mind. We read only Andy's side of the story. His father might have some different views.
Carrying The Water.......2003-02-14
Behind the posturing and political facades, ignored by media and entertainers, and neither praised nor appreciated are the men and women warriors who chose the harder course to wear the uniform of our country's military and serve honorably and successfully through the cold war and Vietnam. One of these, Andy O'Meara has courageously told his story in this moving, informative, and historically appropriate book. His story needs to be read so that our people can understand the brave men and women who did their duty faithfully and honorably, then were treated so badly. Here in stark detail is the other side of the story.
HOW SOLDIERS ARE MADE.......2002-10-22
This is a look into the mind of a successful soldier and leader. It's plainly, forcefully and honestly told. This is the story silenced by the media. If you get your news from Dan Rather, it may shock you. But the truth is evident in every word of it.

Book Description
Paul Hunter: Husband, Father, Rancher, and now Accidental Warrior A trip to Krakow, Poland, in August 1939 with his wife and young daughter to visit some old friends seems like a good idea to Paul. He has no idea that the horror of Nazi domination will sweep across Eastern Europe or that he and his family will be swept up in the madness. Now Paul is lost in the swirling madness of the Nazi blitzkrieg, and his friends are cast into a concentration camp. With no way to contact home and stranded in wartime Germany, it's up to Paul to save his family and his friends from the horrors of Nazi atrocities. Paul had never intended--had never even considered--fighting anything more than the weather, the land, a drunk cowhand, or an occasional cantankerous longhorn or temperamental pony. He is in Germany not of his own choosing, fighting battles not of his making. He is a warrior only by accident. But he cannot afford to lose.
Customer Reviews:
It all went too fast!.......2007-08-11
I purchased this novel to be my reading material on a one-week vacation cruise. I started it on the plane, according to my usual habit. I was halfway through when the plane landed and completely finished before I went to bed in the hotel the night before the cruise started.
So it engulfed me. I was caught up in it the same way the hero, Paul Hunter, was caught up in the opening days of World War Two. It was the right book at the right time for a story about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. And Hunter had been well warned more than once.
Even so, he ventures into Poland with wife and daughter during the very week that the Nazi's attack, forcing him to deal simultaneously with the Germans, a major family health problem, and a serious marriage issue, while trying to save Jewish friends.
Wright's verbalization of the intense and shocking feelings thrust upon unprepared Americans forced to witness the most barbaric period in the world's history brings the story into focus all too clearly.
But, Hunter is not without resources: his early, hardy days growing up in west Texas, his Indian buddy, their survival skills, and a wealthy father who knows how to have his way in a giant bureaucracy.
