A compelling chronicle of a nation and its leaders during the period when modern America was created. With an uncanny feel for detail and a novelist's grasp of drama and depth, Doris Kearns Goodwin brilliantly narrates the interrelationship between the inner workings of the Roosevelt White House and the destiny of the United States. Goodwin paints a comprehensive, intimate portrait that fills in a historical gap in the story of our nation under the Roosevelts.

      Book Description

No Ordinary Time is a monumental work, a brilliantly conceived chronicle of one of the most vibrant and revolutionary periods in the history of the United States. With an extraordinary collection of details, Goodwin masterfully weaves together a striking number of story lines--Eleanor and Franklin's marriage and remarkable partnership, Eleanor's life as First Lady, and FDR's White House and its impact on America as well as on a world at war. Goodwin effectively melds these details and stories into an unforgettable and intimate portrait of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt and of the time during which a new, modern America was born.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well written, high level look at FDR's later Years.......2007-09-23

Having read many of the reviews written here, I think that it is important to first state that I am very conservative both economically and politically. Having said that, I want to make sure that it is understood that I am not judging the FDR Presidency, just this book.

This is my first real historical look at this time frame in American history and I felt that this book was a very good start from which to look into other avenues of interest during the war years. It is important to keep in mind that the earlier FDR years do not come into the focus of this work. This would not be a good book to judge FDR and the New Deal. It sticks with the years 1940 until FDR's death in 1945.

The book is well written and easy to read. It definitely lacks an in depth look at the "whys" of the FDR decision process. I would have liked to have learned more about the actual war decisions, but in reading the subthe title of the book, it is clear that the focus is about the homefront, not necessarily the war efforts abroad. The internal fighting and family relationships are discussed at length. Eleanor is given a front and center position in this work. I really would have liked to see more of FDR and how the decisions for various strategies were found.

There is a liberal bias to the book, but maybe that's my conservative stance showing. Nothing is mentioned in the book other than two sentences about Vice President Wallace. FDR is made to be a Superman, when it could have been read as FDR was merely a dictator that was elected. Without the effect of the decision process, the impression is that all decisions were FDR's alone. And while that may have been the case, the book never clearly states the way many of these ideas came to pass. This book leaves me the impression that much of FDR's time was spent polling the public and then fitting that knowledge into a decision.

So yes the book does have weaknesses in my opinion. But the strength of the book is the look at FDR the person. He was a solitary figure that needed a strong group of friends to humor him and help him through a truly horrific time in American history. His family life was a mess - he and Eleanor going in different directions with the purpose of staying apart. But the main thing I took from this work was that FDR gave the country hope. He never said quit, no matter the odds or obstacles. Was he a great President? This book is a very small piece of that puzzle.

4 out of 5 stars No Ordinary Viewpoint.......2007-09-03

This was a very enjoyable and well written historical account of America during World War II, through the prism of the relationship between Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Goodwin's great strength, it seems to me, is to find a really refreshing angle to look at a well documented subject, often by examining the subject's most important personal relationships. She did the same thing in her Lincoln book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by examining the way Lincoln put together a strong cabinet, while still remaining a strong executive.

In this book she focuses on the Roosevelts during World War II, as FDR rallied a totally unprepared nation to become, first the arsenal of democracy, and then to enter the war against both Germany and Japan.

From my point of view I would have preferred more Franklin and less Eleanor. Ms. Goodwin notes several critics dismissing Eleanor as a meddling nag, and at times the criticism has merit. Franklin's demeanor, whether he is holding court at press conferences or White House cocktail hours, is much more enjoyable to be around. And you do, thanks to the lively writing, have a "you are there" feeling throughout this book.

5 out of 5 stars Extrordinary Leaders for "No Ordinary Time".......2007-08-09

I loved this book. In it, Kearns-Goodwin recreates the time frame 1939-1945 like no other book I have read. The Roosevelts, long in power and struggling to overcome personal/physical difficulties, rise to the occasion like few leaders before them. Both children of privilege, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt took on their personal demons (his polio and her, at first, paralyzing shyness) to save the nation. Already dealing with the Great Depression, they were the public face of the war effort. How easy it would have been for FDR to overreach his power (in both the Depression and WWII). Although he was restricted by an isolationist Congress before the attack on Pearl Harbor,he persuaded Congress to ok Lend-Lease, and developed a plan with Churchill (and later Stalin) that eventually led to total victory. While he made some mistakes (internment of Japanese Americans, for example), his optimistic and winning public style balanced nicely with a keen understanding of the power he wielded. Eleanor, for her part, became the paralyzed president's spokesman around the world and at home. She also pushed domestic policy in a way that kept things like civil rights, help for the poor and needy, and better working conditions for labor on the front burner despite the efforts to win the war. Kearns-Goodwin covers it all, including the personal struggles of the First Couple. After it all, they emerge as extraordinary leaders for "no ordinary time". Few have equaled them before or since.

3 out of 5 stars Not my type of book .......2007-06-29

Packed with information on every aspect of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt during the WWII timeframe, this book is a history lovers dream. Unfortunately, I am no history lover. I became glossy-eyed when fine details were being mentioned about everyday activities. I felt that the book strayed from the main story and gave too much supporting detail. Yet, as is with all of the history books that I marginally enjoy, I learned quite a bit of information that I would never have gained otherwise. I was amazed to learn about how separate the Roosevelt's actually were as a couple and FDR's continued relationship with Lucy Rutherford. I also gained insight into how much Eleanor helped to spur the rights for blacks and women with her forward thinking. Eleanor and Franklin's separation as a couple was shadowed by their strength in bringing a nation out of depression and forming our current business environment. I was also surprised to see the extent in which Franklin relaxed. There wasn't a chapter where Franklin didn't either drive around Hyde Park, cruise on the Potomac, or spend time in his "Little White House" in Warm Springs. This was a man who knew what taking it easy was all about.

5 out of 5 stars A glimpse of my grandparents.......2007-06-09

I am a college student. Before reading this book I barely knew who FDR was, let alone why his terms in office were so important. I traveled to Hawaii shortly after reading this book to visit Pearl Harbor because I was so moved by the book. I feel like I understand my grandparents generation a little better now and truly want to thank them for all they have done.
Overall, a terrific read. The author did a wonderful job of sharing the unique relationship between FDR and Churhill. I was also impressed with the author's knowledge of the homefront, instead of just all of the famous battles. Everyone should read this book.

"The Travels, Arrest and Trial of John H. Surratt" tells of the complicity of John Surratt in the aborted kidnap attempt of Abraham Lincoln. He was on a mission in Canada for the Confederate Secret Service when the president was killed. Surratt fled to Canada, England and the Papal States because he was wanted for complicity in the assassination. He became a Zouave in the army of the Papal States but was betrayed by a fellow soldier. After fleeing from his captors, he was finally apprehended in Egypt, returned to the United States and placed on trial. When he could not be convicted, he finally was freed.

                        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't try to learn crochet from this book.......2007-09-30

There are inexcusable errors in this book which make it impossible to follow the basic "how to" instructions here. The worst one is on the spread which relates how to do the double crochet stitch-- when turning chain to begin the second row, the directions refer you to "steps 2 - 6" which are not followable from the point where the author leaves off.

ALSO-- a more basic problem is with the illustrations. Although the drawings are well executed and easy to look at, there simply aren't enough of them. Skimping on the number of "how to" illustrations is another reason why learning to crochet from this book is a bad idea.

AND-- the language of what to do with the yarn is imprecise. Several times the author says to move the yarn "around the hook from top to bottom." Of course there are TWO ways to do that, two different directions one might choose. The author isn't clear about which way to go, and of course, there is no illustration.

If you already know how to crochet, you will find that the projects the author has selected are modern, attractive and appealing to a wide audience. They are quite basic and allow the construction of an eyeglass case, a cell phone holder and a couple of cute bags from basic rectangles.

Later in the book the author approaches circular and granny square constructions. Unfortunately, there is another error on the first circular "how to" page which will steer you astray.

If you are starting from scratch, find another book!

                        4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-08-24

Really nice CROCHET patterns for a change! The instructions are clear and the diagrams are very helpful. I especially like that the pictures show the item as it's being used not draped overe a chair. My daughter is 19 and the garments are more geared to her taste (and size). She has 3 projects lined up for me already. The only slightly negative comment is that the lovely yarns used are usually only found in specialty yarn shops or online and they are a bit pricy. I'm not new to crochet so I'll be able to find subs but a beginner might have a little trouble.

5 out of 5 stars Best beginner book!.......2006-05-29

I just started crocheting this year, and puchased a number of books. This one turned out to be the best beginner book of all of them. There are some patterns that I'm not ready to make, but the ones I did make were very easy to understand, and turned out quite well. I recently read something on the author, Candi Jensen, and she said that she had written it for the beginner. It shows! Fun, fresh and varried, her patterns are fun to do, easy to modify and make your own, and make a gift-quality product with little or no experience. I highly recommend it.

                        5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2006-03-12

When I first got this book, I thought ho-hum just another one for the new crocheter. But on further looks I find several projects this jaded crocheter wants to make such as that skirt. I also like the granny square scarf (one can't have too many of those), and the little bikini comes with a schematic which most bikini patterns don't bother with (such as in Leapman's cool crochet). I do think the eyeglass case needs a lining as otherwise the frame is going to get caught in the stitches. In short of the 20 projects quite a few are on my to-make list so it is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars great learning tool.......2005-02-08

I bought several books in my quest to learn how to crochet and this was by far the best. The instructions are clear and the projects are fun.

1 out of 5 stars And this makes sense why?.......2007-08-27

So, if I'm to believe this book, I'm supposed to let my teenager (17 yr. old step-son)do whatever he wants. Whenever and however he wants. With no consequences. While I just cover my eyes, plug my ears and let him run wild? Pretend he's not being an abusive, entitled, disrespectful, disobedient, unruly, unlawful, dishonest monster? Can you say Anarchy?

When I hit the part where it blames the parents if their kid steals from them, because they *gasp* had the audacity to leave their own belongings out in their own house...it was time to toss it in the trash. This one could have been written BY a teenager. It's a perfect "how-to" book for getting away with murder (figuratively, of course.)

How is letting the kid run wild, with no fear of consequences, no guidance, no advice, preparing that kid for the real world? Sure, if kids actually LEARN from their mistakes, it's a wonderful thing. But when there's no consequences, what can they possibly be learning? And before somebody jumps in and tells me getting kicked out of school or getting arrested will teach them anything...let me ask YOU...is it the school's or the police's job to raise our kids? Or is it OURS?

I raised two teens myself, NOT in this manner, thank goodness. And they're both now happy, well adjusted, educated, contributing members of society. While on the other hand, my husband's ex raised their kids THIS way...ignored them and let them run wild. They've ended up with a compulsive liar, who also steals and does drugs, and a shoplifting pot smoker, who also lies daily. One can't hold a job to save his life, the other is mean and abusive. Why? Because they CAN. Nobody cared enough to teach them it wasn't OK to act like that.

This book (in my own humble opinion, of course) is a big 'ol cop-out for parents who don't want to put in the hard work raising their own kids.

                            4 out of 5 stars A new perspective.......2005-11-20

This book helped the situation with my 17 yr old son. A lot of what is in this book goes directly against everything I've ever thought about parenting and it was scary for me at first, but I was desprate and we've had some positive changes because of these techniques. It took a few months, but he's back in school (he was ditching frequently), passing his classes (he was failing them all) and coming home on time every night (he was usually late or wouldn't come home at all). Basically, I've been trying to parent my teenager as if he were still a child. This book helped me to understand that it is natural for teenagers to become independent and, in fact, becoming independent is what they are supposed to be doing. The problem has been that I have been trying to direct my son to go in what I see as the right direction, and so the only way he can feel independent is to choose something different than what I want, even when that means making bad choices. Instead, this book advised me to let him find his own choices, within the boundaries of not taking advantage of me. It was scary, and I had my doubts (I felt like I was copping-out, giving up, taking the easy way out, etc) but this book has definitely helped our situation. Plus, now I feel like a person again instead of a warden.

Thinking back to when I was a teenager, I don't think there was any amount of intervention/ restriction/ punishment/ behavioral contracts/ trips to rehab that would have stopped me from doing what I wanted to do. I always found my first response to anything my parents wanted was to reject it totally and then think of reasons to support the rejection afterwards. I was a bad kid, but not because of bad parents or emotional distress...it was just my way of growing up. This book effectively addresses that mindset. Very insightful.

5 out of 5 stars restore your sanity -- great parenting book!.......2005-02-06

This is probably the most helpful book on parenting I have ever read. I gave up on parenting books about 5 years ago when I realized the cookie-cutter approaches were not easily applied to my (and my son's) non-cookie-cutter lives! I purchased this book based on a review of a different book, where this book was recommended instead. I am really glad I did because from the very first exercise, it improved my whole outlook on my life with my teen.

The authors suggest to read the book through cover to cover first, then go through it chapter by chapter, working the exercises. I'm about half-way through the first read and I have already used many of the exercises (unofficially) to help me put things into perspective, regain sanity when teenage craziness is in full swing and have even used it in dealing with my ex-husband (who often acts like an adolescent!).

I have a great kid and a great life. This book helps remind me of that and also to know that I am not alone!

5 out of 5 stars Only self-help book that ever helped.......2004-03-18

My ex-wife and I read this book almost 20 years ago, when our two kids were teenagers. Our daughter, the eldest, was acting up (and out)--breaking curfew, staying out, experimenting with different substances, generally going through a volatile adolescence--normal "individuating," it turned out (thank God), but it was driving her mother and me crazy because we lived apart and both worked full-time. Two employed adults are no match for one teenager intent on getting her way. We were at the end of our tethers trying to keep tabs on her. Somehow we found out about HOW TO DEAL WITH YOUR ACTING UP TEENAGER. We both read it, decided it made sense and was worth a try, and had a family meeting with both our kids. We told them we wanted to try a new way of parent-kid relations that basically boiled down to, mutual respect. When we told them we were going to stop trying to control them--ground them, harass them about schoolwork and grades, etc.--they looked at us suspiciously. Was this some kind of trick? Some sort of parental sting operation? No, no, we assured them, we were on the level. And it worked. Our daughter stopped driving us crazy, we stopped driving her crazy, and relations improved. I can say unequivocally that this is the only self-help book that has ever actually helped me (and I've read a few). I recommend it without qualification. The authors, as I recall, were parents themselves as well as psychologists, and brought both their practical and academic experience to bear. Bless them both. I still tell people about this book when I hear about problems with adolescence, and am glad it's still available.

A wonderful book for moms and dads who are wondering how their kids got so out of control...MAYBE its been your approach. Robert and Jean Bayard offer up a very loving parenting approach. Im giving this to my husband to read and then I'm going to read it a second time. One of the most intellegent books I have read on the subject.

                                      Book Description

During his remarkable life, Yousuf Karsh, who was born in Armenia in 1908, traveled the globe to photograph subjects ranging from historical figures to anonymous farmers to steelworks. Karsh: A Biography In Images is a full revision of the 1996 60-year retrospective of his work and brings that popular catalogue back into print in an affordable paperback format. This new edition covers the photographer's career with greater breadth than its previous incarnation, adding works from his early experiments and his photojournalism commissions in Canada. Karsh's reputation as one of the most sought-after portrait photographers of the 20th century is well established. A roll call of his subjects is a veritable who's who of the modern age--Winston Churchill, Jacqueline Kennedy, Pablo Picasso, Walt Disney, Elizabeth Taylor and Albert Einstein, to name just a few--and this book features many of these figures, in some of the most recognized images of our time. But added to the portraits are a number of lesser-known or previously unpublished photographs--early figure studies, atmospheric views of the Ottawa theatre and scenes of wheat fields, city streets and factories across Canada. With its long autobiographical essay and extensive captions for each photo, many of them new to this edition, Karsh: A Biography In Images is both an elegant celebration and an indispensable overview of a life lived in photography. Yousuf Karsh passed away last year.

                                                  Book Description

In this edition the text of The Examiner is presented as Swift wrote it, not as it was revised for publication by George Faulkner in 1738. And for the first time Swift's Examiners are juxtaposed with the Medleys of Arthur Mainwaring that replied to them every week. They bring the reader close to the actualites of London between November 1710 and June 1711. From the literary point of view The Examiner is important because it contains some of Swift's best work. Even under the pressure of weekly publication he was still able to achieve, in Herbert Davis's words, 'an aloofness as if beyond bias and passion'.
