Namaqualand is one of my favorite places on earth when it blooms. This book shows Namaqualand at it's best. It gives a little taste of what this area looks like when in flower. The pictures are stunning and spectacular. If you love the flowers of South Africa this book is a must. I hope to see this area in person some day. Until then I can look at this book and dream. Another good book on this area is "Namaqualand: A Succulent Desert" by Richard Cowling and Shirley Pierce, with Photograpy by Colin Paterson-Jones. Both volumes are wonderful.

This book gives a great view of the New Kingdom ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes. It provides intimate details into the lives of the workers at Deir-El Medina, the monumental temples, beutiful tombs, and its unique history. The Strudwicks do a wonderful job expalining how Thebes went from a small Egyptian town to a huge capital that would leave an unforgettable mark on Egyptian Culture.

This book differs from the usual guides, as it describes the historical evolution, from the Old Kingdom to the Late Period, of the tombs and temples of Thebes (modern Luxor). The authors provide detailed and accurate information about life in the city. Subjects covered include the Valley of the Kings, that of the Queens and of the Nobles. Issues such as tomb decoration and burials of private individuals are addressed. This is an excellent, recommended, must-read book for all.

I was disappointed at the simple, stark items for quilling. There could have been much more put into the pictures. What was given would have been more appropriate for school age. I did find the instructions very good and easy to understand.

If you are looking for clear and simple instructions and designs, this is the book you want. The easy to follow instructions explain how to make the many shapes in this extremely easy craft. There are designs and instructions for making cards for every occasion and holiday. For scrapbookers she shows wonderful and funny ideas for pages for vacations, school days, hobbies, weddings, etc. All the designs are doable by even the most inexperienced, such as myself!

My daughter gave me this book along with paper and a tool. I normally work 10-12 hours a day writing instruction manuals and piddle in crafts as a hobby on weekends. Well let me tell you that this book has taken over my life and I am de-stressed for the first time this year. This is a very fun, easy craft and is inexpensive too. I am addicted and stay up late into the night rolling paper. After a week I have made a beautiful flower card to thank my daugher for giving me this book. She met the Ms. Christenson at a meeting this year and told me I would love this craft. Buy this book and add fun to your life. It will be worth it. - JoJo

'New' Quilling Book is Inspiring.......2006-06-08

I bought this book basically to find out the technique to make the beautiful bows on the boxes.

The author's work is very professional and the projects are lovely. They are different, with use of other materials besides paper incorporated into her designs. Embellishing an altered booktag with metal-shaped letters, dry-embossing paper before curling and using chalk to highlight finished elements. These give her creations a look distinctive from other quilling books and require different techniques to complete. In particular painting strips of paper as in the framed bold initials.

I especially like the framed evening dresses using only tendrils (glue is not necessary after shaping), but my taste for a classic quilled look with more traditional designs, leads me to try the candy toppers next. I would have preferred to see more ideas for cards, but this is just a niggle in what I believe is a very inspiring quilling book with a fresh new look.

The Best Quilling Book - A Scrapbooker's Dream!.......2006-05-14

The New Paper Quilling book by Molly Smith Christensen was recommended to me by several of my scrapbooking friends. I've been scrapbooking for years now and have never quilled before getting this book, but now I am a scrapbooker *and* a quiller thanks to this wonderfully creative book! It's so easy and fun to learn, too!

First of all, the author begins by listing a Basic Quilling Tool Kit that you'll need in order to learn to quill. She describes in detail each tool in the basic kit, possible substitutions, and where to find the supplies. (I was able to find all of the supplies at my favorite craft store.)

Then she describes and shows pictures of the basic quilling shapes (circle, bullet, marquise, teardrop, square, diamond, scrolls, roses, loops, spirals, and more). The photos showing how to hold the quilling needle tool were a helpful guide in the beginning. These basic shapes, along with the decorative quilling techniques, give you an endless possibility of quilling ideas!

I was so impressed with the number of projects in just one book! I use my quilling designs to embellish my children's baby books, but for someone needing quilling designs for more than scrapbooking, there are projects to decorate cards, gift bags, candles, plant pokes, coasters, magnets, keepsake boxes -- your quilling designs can even be elegant enough to be framed!

For each project, the author tells you exactly what tool you will need, along with the basic techniques used. The instructions are very clear and *so* easy to understand. She also has very helpful "tips" for each project, such as using different types of paper, time-savers, and ideas for additional projects.

My favorite project has been making alphabet letters for the titles of my scrapbook pages. She has three to choose from -- script, fillip, and circle. The quilled letters really stand out nicely on my pages.

I highly recommend this quilling book. If I can learn to quill, you can too! If you are looking for a fun new paper craft to get into, and you've been waiting for the right book to teach you how, you've got to get this one. I think both beginning quillers and advanced quillers will enjoy this book.

I am so excited about what I've learned by reading this book. I always thought that my Mother hated me and was intentionally tearing me apart (She didn't think I was much of a treat either). Now I realize that it all boils down to personality and how we look at the world. Differences in the way we perceive the world around us and the different types of things that drive our emotions and goals in life. Each example set off light bulbs, now I finally have the direction I've needed to try to get our relationship to be less volatile. Definitely worth the read!!!

If you have found this book then you NEED it! I have always been interested in personality types but when my shild turned 5 I was desperate to 'figure' her out. After reading 'Strong-WIlled Child' I was even more lost. Everything in that book did NOT work (any more with her than it did with me when MY parents tried it on ME!). It was about page 3 of this book that the light bulb turned on and I realized I WAS A DREAMER! As is my daughter. This is the most applicable book on personalities I have ever read!

I originally bought this book for my wife. But I ended reading it myself one day. And it was definitely an eye opener for me. Not because it helped me as a parent, even though it has. It helped answer a lot of questions I had about myself. What started as an attempt to assist my wife in understanding our daughter ended up as a quasi life changing event for myself. A surprise and a relief. I thought it was just me.

When I read this book, I FINALLY understood my son, and MYSELF! It was an "Ah-HA!" moment for me!! The more I talked to parents who were frustrated with their kids, and asked them questions that were asked in the book,I realized there were a lot of frustrated, misunderstood kids out there as well. I was able to bring up some points from the book and was able to give my friends an "Ah-ha" moment too! One major thing was that they are misunderstood as being strong willed when in fact, they're not, and if children are treated as such,it actually makes things worse.
I found this book SO helpful(and I read a lot of these types of books)that I ordered over 10 copies to give to my friends(and my school and church library)who have kids like this.(I didn't want them to 'suffer' like I did)(Although I hate the term "dreamer" because it implies someone "spacy")

Inspirational drawings.......2001-07-14

As an art student, I am fascinated by the way artists put media to paper, in the most basic way, and draw. In this book, 'Jim Dine: Drawings from the Glyptotech' we are shown the true art of drawing. By taking a pretty straightforward model, e.g. a statue, Dine renders something quite unique. How can one artist lay open the heart and soul of something so static as a statue? But, surprisingly, he does this with economy of line and media. The drawings show strength and depth and you are left with a knowledge of real people and their lives, in a two-dimensional sense. The text is concise and you immediately understand the points Dine is making in relation to his drawings. The reproductions of his drawings are exceptional. This book should be in every art students' (and artists, for that matter) bookcase as an essential reference point from where to start drawing. I have learnt so much from Jim Dine in this book that I just want to spend years exploring the art of putting down good lines on paper.

Jim Dine became truly excited about the possibilities of photography when he realized that the medium offered the opportunity to quickly and directly access his unconscious, something he seeks to do in all of his art-making. Regardless of which media Dine is working in, he maintains a familiar but ever-expanding repertory of images: tools, hearts and a torso of Venus, plus the more recent iconography of crows, skulls, a Pinocchio doll, and an odd-couple ape and cat. As with his paintings, sculptures and graphic work, for which he is better known, Dine seeks to record his physical and emotional presence concretely, not gesturally. The camera is but one of the many tools he has at his disposal for making such pictures. This refusal to privilege one method over another helps explain how, in the space of only six or seven years, Dine has managed to produce such a large number of haunting photographic images that remain consistent with the tenor of his art as a whole while expanding its technical repertoire and range of possibilities. Though he has been making art for over four decades, producing paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, as well as performance works, stage and book designs, poetry and even music, Dine has only been working with photography since 1996. Blooming with botanical drawings and paintings this coffee table volume by artist Jim Dine is a must for gardeners and flora aficionados.

Here we find beauty in the unexpected intricate charcoal shading in Dine's interpretation of a mandrake root, in an amazing pencil and watercolour study of a hyacinth, and in the bawdy, robust color found in anthuriums.

This is a timeless volume that brings pleasure each time it is opened.

Jim Dine, among whose earliest major successes were late 1950s Happenings (on which he worked with Claes Oldenburg and John Cage, among others), has been associated with Pop, Neo-Dada and other mischievous movements of his era, and has survived them all. His visual work in mixed-media assemblages, to which he attached emotion-tugging souvenirs including clothing, shoes, rope and tools, led into what has become a remarkable, continually evolving corpus of paintings, sculpture, photographs, and, increasingly importantly, prints. Working not just from his own studios in Vermont, New York and London, but with production houses in Los Angeles, Vienna, Rome and Paris to name but a few, he has been creating editions that push the limits of their media in size and scope, full of persistent icons and themes, lately more often from nature than around the house. Owls, hands, trees, apes and ravens have taken their places alongside his hearts and palettes and bathrobes. This important survey brings together more than 200 works covering a fertile 20-year period in the thick of Dine's printmaking, and during a time when printmaking has been in the thick of his artistic practice. It includes original etchings, lithographs, woodcuts and limited edition artists' books, and several particularly important series, such as the 12 large woodcuts, Winter Dream (for V.), 55 Portraits and his latest lithographs, which reflect an ongoing obsession with Pinocchio.
