Thebes in Egypt: A Guide to the Tombs and Temples of Ancient Luxor
Nigel Strudwick , and Helen Strudwick Manufacturer: Cornell University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801486165 |
Book Description
The remains of ancient Thebes constitute one of the largest and most remarkable archaeological sites in all of Egypt and indeed the world. The discoveries made at this site, now the modern town of Luxor, are responsible for much of our knowledge of ancient Egyptian civilization. After excavating and researching the city of Thebes for many years, Nigel and Helen Strudwick here offer the first comprehensive introduction to it, one that will be welcomed by both armchair travelers and visitors to that popular tourist destination. Handsomely illustrated, the book features eighty photographs--thirty in color--and twenty maps and plans. After reviewing the topography of the site, the Strudwicks recount the history of Thebes from the city's rise in the late Old Kingdom to the peak of its power in the New Kingdom and to its gradual decline in the Greco-Roman period. They discuss the central role played by the gods in the community's religious life, and take us on a tour of the great temples of Karnak and Luxor on the East Bank of the Nile and of the temples and tombs of kings, queens, princes, and ordinary individuals on the West Bank. Drawing on their intimate acquaintance with ancient Egyptian society, the authors re-create the lives of Thebans during the New Kingdom. They conclude by assessing Greek, Roman, Coptic, and Islamic influences on the area as it exists today and by providing an overview of the archaeological research undertaken there.CONTENTS Tour of Ancient Thebes The Historical Setting East Bank: The Great Temples of Karnak and Luxor West Bank: Temples West Bank: Tombs of the Kings West Bank: The Tombs of the Queens and Princes West Bank: The Tombs of Private Individuals Life in Ancient Thebes in the New Kingdom Thebes in More Recent History Visiting Luxor Further Reading Index

Book Description
Your child may be a sensitive dreamer if: he forgets to follow instructions, no matter how clear and simple, she craves praise and positive attention, yet refuses to conform to what's expected, he tells more than his share of fibs and tall tales. If you recognize these actions in your child, you know the frustration of turning to parenting experts for advice only to find the systems don't work, the rules don't stick and strong boundary setting makes the situation worse. The creative-sensitive dreamer is not the strong-willed child. Get this book and learn how to parent your special needs child who is principle -oriented rather than rule-oriented, highly creative, overly sensitive and frustrated at a world that fails to live up to the ideal.Customer Reviews:

Jim Dine: Some Drawings
Vincent Katz , and Jim Dine Manufacturer: Steidl/Oberlin College ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3865211194 Release Date: 2005-08-15 |
Book Description
This book of 85 drawings by Jim Dine illustrates the range and mastery of the artist's draftsmanship over more than four decades. The variety and breadth of the selection shows the intense way Dine observes the world around him and the excitement with which he records it on paper. Dine has said that his ability to draw is both a privilege and the result of hard physical training, compelling him to move inexorably forward to capture the next idea or the next psychological insight in drawings that are extraordinarily human. The selection includes early tool pencil drawings and collages, as well as powerful portrait and figure studies in a variety of media. Also included are large painterly pastels executed with a bravura that places them somewhere between painting and drawing. Dine sees his paintings and drawings as essentially conceived and developed in the same way--requiring the same amount of time, emotion, and physicality of medium. The only difference, in the end, is that the drawings are on paper.

Jim Dine: Pinocchio
Manufacturer: Steidl ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3865212646 Release Date: 2006-11-15 |
Book Description
"Thanks to Carlo Collodi, the real creator of Pinocchio, I have for many years been able to live thru the wooden boy. His ability to hold the metaphor in limitless ways has made my drawings, paintings and sculpture of him richer by far. His poor burned feet, his misguided judgment, his vanity about his large nose, his temporary donkey ears all add up to the real sum of his parts. In the end it is his great heart that holds me. I have carried him on my back like landscape since I was six years old. Sixty-four years is a long time to get to know someone, yet his depth and secrets are endless. This book is for the Boy." Pinocchio has long been a significant motif in Jim Dine's work, and this book is his illustrated version of Collodi's original, dark story. Set far from a traditional fairy-tale world, containing as it does the hard realities of the need for food, shelter and other basic measures of daily life, its allegory, satire and wit are the perfect subject for Dine's graphic drawings.

Book Description
Jim Dine became truly excited about the possibilities of photography when he realized that the medium offered the opportunity to quickly and directly access his unconscious, something he seeks to do in all of his art-making. Regardless of which media Dine is working in, he maintains a familiar but ever-expanding repertory of images: tools, hearts and a torso of Venus, plus the more recent iconography of crows, skulls, a Pinocchio doll, and an odd-couple ape and cat. As with his paintings, sculptures and graphic work, for which he is better known, Dine seeks to record his physical and emotional presence concretely, not gesturally. The camera is but one of the many tools he has at his disposal for making such pictures. This refusal to privilege one method over another helps explain how, in the space of only six or seven years, Dine has managed to produce such a large number of haunting photographic images that remain consistent with the tenor of his art as a whole while expanding its technical repertoire and range of possibilities. Though he has been making art for over four decades, producing paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, as well as performance works, stage and book designs, poetry and even music, Dine has only been working with photography since 1996. Using heliogravure and digital ink-jet processes as well as conventional color and black-and-white photographic printing, Dine imbues his photographs with an intensity that is occasionally traumatic but invariably beautiful. This catalogue raisonn marks the first comprehensive publication on the photographs of Jim Dine.

Book Description
Jim Dine, among whose earliest major successes were late 1950s Happenings (on which he worked with Claes Oldenburg and John Cage, among others), has been associated with Pop, Neo-Dada and other mischievous movements of his era, and has survived them all. His visual work in mixed-media assemblages, to which he attached emotion-tugging souvenirs including clothing, shoes, rope and tools, led into what has become a remarkable, continually evolving corpus of paintings, sculpture, photographs, and, increasingly importantly, prints. Working not just from his own studios in Vermont, New York and London, but with production houses in Los Angeles, Vienna, Rome and Paris to name but a few, he has been creating editions that push the limits of their media in size and scope, full of persistent icons and themes, lately more often from nature than around the house. Owls, hands, trees, apes and ravens have taken their places alongside his hearts and palettes and bathrobes. This important survey brings together more than 200 works covering a fertile 20-year period in the thick of Dine's printmaking, and during a time when printmaking has been in the thick of his artistic practice. It includes original etchings, lithographs, woodcuts and limited edition artists' books, and several particularly important series, such as the 12 large woodcuts, Winter Dream (for V.), 55 Portraits and his latest lithographs, which reflect an ongoing obsession with Pinocchio.

Letterbook of Greg & Cunningham, 1756-57: Merchants of New York and Belfast (Records of Social and Economic History, New Series) (Records of Social and Economic History, New Series, 28)
Manufacturer: British Academy ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0197262198 |
Book Description
The correspondence from the most successful Irish-American trading firm of the colonial period forms a remarkable archive for economic historians of the eighteenth century. This is an edition of a letterbook that contains the first nine months of correspondence from this New York trading house. The letters to commercial contacts throughout the North Atlantic region offer a vivid picture of the transatlantic economy. And the private communications of Waddell Cunningham to his partner, Thomas Greg in Belfast, allow a rare behind-the-scenes look at the management and operation of an overseas merchant house. Guided by Professor Truxes's authoritative introduction, we can see in these letters the difficulties of decision-making over long distances, the problems of over-stretched resources, and the impact of the Seven Years War on the evolution of a vigorous enterprise.
