Book Description
The Ku Klux Klan reached its height in the 1920s, and nowhere was it as large and politically powerful as in Indiana, where about 30 percent of the native-born white male population were Klansmen. This book explores the career of D. C. Stephenson, grand dragon of the Indiana Klan, his rise to power, and his eventual conviction for second-degree murder in 1925. Grand Dragon traces Stephenson's background, still shrouded in mystery due to Stephenson's own colorful but imaginary accounts of his early years. A political opportunist, Stephenson's rise to power in the loan was startlingly swift, but so was his fall from grace. Tried in Klan country for the rape and murder of a young government worker, Stephenson was convicted and imprisoned for a crime of which some still consider him innocent.
Customer Reviews:
Required reading for those interested in the KKK.......2003-01-08
This book tells the story of the KKK in Indiana. It turns out this was a real hotbed for the KKK and they were extremely powerful controlling cities, police, the governor. If you think of the KKK as Southern, this book will set you straight. The head of the Indiana KKK was D.C. Stephenson who was tried for rape and murder. A truly scary book, but a page burner and dead-on historically.
An INCREDIBLE but TRUE tale in Hoosier history!.......1999-06-24
If you like true "whodunit" stories that still leave you wondering at the end, then this is the book for you. An unfathomable story leading up to a 1920s "Trial of the Century," Lutholtz raises almost as many questions as he answers in his quest for understanding of the mind and actions of D.C. Stephenson, a man so powerful he brought down a governor and a mayor in seemingly one fell swoop, controlled the police chief of a major metropolitan city of the time and had the temerity to claim "I am the law in Indiana." The author does a superb job in uncovering information concerning Stephenson's trial for murder that many Hoosiers don't seem comfortable discussing. Lutholtz also offers excellent coverage of the lawyers and judges involved, and the dangers and pitfalls they faced in trying a man who terrified just about everybody!

Customer Reviews:
Styles great, but contains too many mistakes .......2007-04-22
I agree that some of the styles are lovely but so far out of the three bags I have made from this book, two have contained serious errors in the patterns and instructions. Why weren't these carefully checked before the book went to print? I am annoyed that I have wasted time and fabric trying to make these bags.
TACKY bags, not one practical bag in the entire book!.......2007-04-08
I was looking for a book to make elegant, simple and practical bags. This book has is all feathers and beads, nothing that I would ever give to someone as a gift! I was very disappointed.
Practical as well as inspiring.......2007-02-25
Stephanie Kimura's "Bags with Style" is by far the most inspiring book out of all those I own on making purses and bags. The beauty of the book is not just in its lavish photographs, but also in its commonsense approach. Paper patterns are supplied; diagrams and instructions are clear and understandable. Kimura creates stunning bags of original design, but keeps the assembly very simple: only one bag has a zip, and none uses a metal purse clasp. (Often hard to find.) Some novelty closures using fabic give great effect.
The book is well set out - into four "chapters' that have a number of sub-headings. Chapter 1 covers materials; chapter 2,sewing and assembly techniques; chapter 3 embellishments, closures and speciality handles; chapter 4, the numerous projects themselves. The day bags are very smart and professional-looking, with some evening purses almost exotic. (The photo on the cover is not typical of the ones inside.)
Choice of fabric is obviously of paramount importance in creating a stunning purse or bag. Kimura shows how to use cotton batik, silk, linen, tapestry, velvet, faux fur, leather and ultrasuede to incredible effect using some innovative embellishments. All easily adapted to your own ideas. A gallery and list of resources is at the back.
This book gets 5++ from me for inspiration and layout. Great for both beginners and experienced sewers.
Worst purse making book ever.......2006-10-10
I don't know who the folks are who've posted the lavish comments about this book, but at the risk of being witchy I have to wonder if they actually used the patterns and instructions in this book.
So far, I've made three of the purses -- and in EVERY SINGLE LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS so far there have been important steps that have been completely omitted. Additionally, the instructions are often poorly worded, incomplete, or completely confusing. In more than one case, the instruction was so obtuse I had to keep re-reading it over and over waiting for it to make sense.
For the the last purse I made from this book, the instructions were missing three critical steps -- it didn't take all that long to correct the omissions, but sheesh, did someone even bother to do any QA on the instructions?
I have the good fortune to have an aunt who helped me through the poor instructions. If you're a beginner or have limited experience and don't have an Aunt Judy to help you out, then save your money and skip this book altogether.
As far as the designs being wonderful and modern, blah blah blah. They're okay. I bought the book for two patterns in particular, but would never carry 75% of the others.
Overall -- yuck. Glad I got the book on sale.
Bags With Style and Then Some.......2006-07-10
I purchased both "Bags With Style" and "Bags and Accessories With Style". I just have to say that the titles are an understatement. They should have been entitled "Bags of Elegance and Sumptuous Opulence", or something along those lines. I knew just by looking at the covers of these books that Ms. Kimura was an incredibly talented woman. However, I did not expect to find each and every page exploding with such gorgeous and innovative pieces. I found myself reading (and re-reading) each book cover to cover. I then proceeded to methodically go through the resource list in the back of each book, while online, to determine just what I needed to get to work, creating my own "bags with style"! I look forward to future publications by Ms. Kimura with great anticipation. Thank you Stephanie for sharing your creativity and extensive knowledge! I'll never look at a purse the same way again.
Bravo!

Customer Reviews:
The first was better ..........2006-03-22
I purchased this book after buying Ms. Kimura's first, "Bags With Style". Though this has more fun ideas, the same great construction and fabric chapters, and easy to use instructions, I just did not find it quite as inspirational as her first. Patterns are included and the instructions are clear and concise. The accessories did not wow me and some of the bag designs seemed a bit redundant. There are some fun ones in here, especially the one on the cover! Still a good book but I would recommend her first more.
Improving on Excellence!.......2005-09-22
Could a follow-up book possibly be just as good--if not better--than the original? Author Stephanie Kimura proves it can in her wonderful follow-up to the hugely successful Bags with Style. In this book, Stephanie goes beyond just bags and adds instruction on how to create some of the most fashionable accessories that are staples to any stylish woman's wardrobe. Yes, there are mostly bags, but you'll also learn how to create shrugs, shawls, belts, collars, cell phone carriers and even a romantic stole! Beginners and advanced sewers alike will revel in the 27 projects from the casual to the exquisite. Success is inevitable when you couple the full-size patterns (we're talking pattern company quality patterns) with 200 fabulous photos and 65 helpful how-to illustrations. As Stephanie puts it, this book "is for talented and creative women like you." When you put it like that, how can you possibly resist?!
My review for Bags/Accessories w/Style.......2005-09-16
This book was exactly what I was looking for. I used it for belts the first day I received it. The purses/bags are my next projects. I highly recommend for crafters with a little flair to their style.

Book Description
A practical guide to ensuring your child's success in school. What makes children succeed in school? For the past twenty years, the focus has been on building children's self-esteem to help them achieve more in the classoom. But positive reinforcement hasn't necessarily resulted in measureable academic improvement. Through extensive research, combined with ongoing classroom implementation of their ideas, Deborah Stipek, Dean of the School of Education at Stanford, and Kathy Seal have created a program that will encourage motivation and a love of learning in children from toddlerhood through elementary school. Stipek and Seal maintain that parents and teachers can build a solid foundation for learning by helping children to develop the key elements of success: competency, autonomy, curiosity, and critical relationships. The authors offer both practical advice on understanding different learning styles and down-to-earth tips about how to manage difficult issues -- competition, grades, praise, bribes, and rewards -- that inevitably arise for parents and teachers. Most important, Stipek and Seal help parents create an enriching environment for their children at home that will mesh with the school experience and become a positive, effective climate for learning.
Customer Reviews:
A very good reference book for parents.......2006-03-04
Wouldn't it be wonderful if a child is motivated and is willing and wanting to learn by himself, just because he WANTS to?
This book has given me so many ideas.
Parents who really want to put more effort in helping their children should read this book.
Great tips for all ages.......2003-09-05
This is an all ages book on how children learn and how parents can help them -- what to do and not do. Let me quote: "Although this book focuses on children from babyhood through elementary school, its general principles and recommendations apply to children of all ages, and even to adults. Everyone can follow the self-motivation model you will read about in upcoming chapters: the cycle of working hard, persisting to overcome obstacles, and being energized to do more by the feelings of pleasure brought by newly gained confidence." It's based on the latest research. This book opened my eyes to the inadequacy of my own education: I worked for grades, not to learn. I made great grades, but what did I learn? Not much. Even now, I have bad "learning" skills. My curiosity has been quashed by the desire to perform and get the job done. This book also covers choosing schools, toys, "getting smart" instead of "being smart," the harmfulness of grades and competition. Also included is what to say and not say to your child. This book will stay on my shelf for years!
Stellar.......2002-05-10
This book is, without question, the best book available for anyone who is a parent (or intends to eventually become a parent) and wants to preserve or increase their children's intrinsic motivation to learn. If you want children to WANT to learn, to learn WELL, to ENJOY learning, and to CONTINUE learning even after their schooling has ended, there is no finer book than this one. It also will be a fantastic contribution for any person who teaches or intends to eventually teach. I recommend this without question!!
SUPER REFERENCE FOR PARENTS.......2001-04-07
This book answers a lot of questions I've had about parenting. It has good sections on how and when to use rewards, when and how to praise your kids, when you should tell them "Do this now!" and when you should let go. I especially liked a chapter on intelligence where they explain why it's better to emphasize that intelligence isn't a fixed quality. I had never thought about this before but found that it is useful for keeping your kids encouraged in school.
I found that I already do some of the things this book recommends - like reading to my children -- but that they also suggested interesting ways to "stop nagging" my kids yet still have them do their homework, ways to help them do well on standardized tests yet face them calmly, and ways to ensure their self-esteem. One thing I found especially useful was two chapters on choosing schools. They give very specific instructions on how to judge a preschool and what to look for when you visit elementary schools. It gave me a list of questions to ask take when I looked at a preschool for my son recently, so I feel now that I can make decisions based on research and not just instinct.
The best thing about this book is that is a good read. There are lots of examples and suggestions for what to do and what to say, even a quiz to give yourself. This is a book I would definitely give at baby showers, because it's a guide you can refer to from babyhood onward.
Motivated Minds.......2001-04-05
This book should be required reading for all parents. Carefully researched, this book lets you know how a child can learn to love learning and how a parent can help that process. The book is written in a beautiful flowing style so there is not a minute of boredom. Research facts and stories intertwine to demonstrate exactly what children need to succeed.

Take two intertwined lives marked by childhood turmoil, geographic displacement, fierce ambition, and total dedication to a quixotic form of art, add a lively narrative style and you have Christo and Jeanne-Claude by Burt Chernow. In 1959, French socialite Jeanne-Claude fell in love with a penniless Bulgarian portrait artist just beginning to wrap small objects in canvas. She had no way of knowing that her life would one day involve a constant round of negotiations with politicians, government agencies, fabricators, factory owners, truckers, laborers, farmers, and everyone else whose good will, expertise, or elbow grease were needed to make Christo's gigantic projects happen. Chernow seasons this cheerfully uncritical authorized biography of the masterminds of such projects as "Running Fence" and the "Wrapped Reichstag" with evocative sketches of the '60s art world. An epilogue by Wolfgang Volz, a photographer close to the couple, engrossingly recounts their struggles and triumphs in the '80s and '90s. --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
For their sheer scale and breathtaking audacity, their works have made them among the most celebrated and controversial artists in the world. Valley Curtain stretched 1,250 feet across a valley in Rifle, Colorado; Wrapped Coast covered a mile and a half of Australian coastline with a million square feet of fabric; The Umbrellas deployed 3,100 umbrellas set in Japan and California, each nearly twenty feet tall; Surrounded Islands encircled eleven islands in Biscayne Bay, Florida with six and a half million square feet of bright pink fabric; and Wrapped Reichstag enveloped the entire German parliament in shimmering silver fabric. For more than forty years, these and many other works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude have reconceived the art of the possible, turned natural and human monuments-streets, bridges, hills, trees, buildings, parks, and islands-into sculptures and paintings, and created dazzling new landscapes and startling new vistas.Often requiring years, even decades, of preparation and planning, these works-not merely feats of aesthetic daring but engineering and organizational marvels-exist for only a few weeks or less. Yet what makes these transient creations linger forever in the mind is their overwhelming and magisterial beauty. They are, in every sense, transformative, and, for the millions who have experienced them in person, unforgettable. Christo and Jeanne-Claude have been the frequent subjects of films, videos, catalogues, cartoons, monographs, exhibitions, and editorials. Until this biography by Burt Chernow, however, written with the full cooperation of the artists, nothing has connected the intimate details of their lives and the spectacular dimensions of their projects. Christo, the penniless Bulgarian refugee who made his way to Paris during the 1950s, and Jeanne-Claude, the socialite daughter of a prominent French general, seemed an unlikely couple, yet together they forged one of the most enduring partnerships in contemporary art. When they arrived in New York in 1964, Christo was already becoming well known in avant-garde circles for his wrappings of everyday objects; Jeanne-Claude acted as manager, dealer, and accountant. Over time, as Chernow reveals, the fusion of their prodigious gifts-his drawings and her ability to draw things together-produced the works for which today they are known the world over. Chernow recounts their rise from relative obscurity to international renown, revealing both the sources of their art and the heights to which it has quite literally aspired. An epilogue by Wolfgang Volz, a longtime and close collaborator of the artists, as well as their exclusive photographer, provides a fascinating insider's view of what it is like to work, and dream, with them. Christo and Jeanne-Claude is an indelible portrait of the artists and their work, and a moving account of an extraordinary couple.AUTHORBIO: Burt Chernow lectured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and was Professor of Art History at Housatonic College in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was also the founder and Director Emeritus of the Housatonic Museum of Art. The author of many books and essays, he died in 1997.Wolfgang Volz's photographs have appeared in Art, GEO, Paris Match, Der Spiegel, Life, and Time magazines. He has worked with Christo and Jeanne-Claude since 1972, and is the exclusive photographer of their work. He was also technical director of the project to wrap the Reichstag. He lives with his wife Sylvie in Dsseldorf, Germany.

Great for 3rd - 5th grade boys of Irish identity.......2005-10-08
This book would be good for building up the pride of especially Irish American boys. While there is one 9 page chapter on St. Brigid out of this 20 chapter 178 page book, most are of Irish priests who went sailing elsewhere as missionaries or who dealt with scary situations. The writing is not particularly good, though it is not bad writing. The version I read was published in 1955. I have found that a number of books on saints written before Vatican II were not written as well as those written after Vatican II, though I do not know the reason for that. Maybe before Vatican II reading books on saints was more popular, so the writing did not have to have the same quality for selling as those written after that time. There are very few pictures in this book and the ones which are there are black and white, so the child would need to be of an age where pictures are not important.
This book includes stories on the following saints:
Adamnan.......Benignus.......Brendan.......Brigid.......Canice.......Ciaran.......Colman of Kilmacduagh.......Colman-Elo.......Columbanus.......Columcille.......Cormac.......Finbarr.......Finnian.......Flannan.......Gall.......Laurence O'Toole.......Modomnoc.......Patrick.......Thaddeus MacCarthy.......The monk who heard the bird sing for 150 years.
