5 out of 5 stars A BOOK FOR A LIFETIME .......2007-03-05

Here I am ordering another copy of this book. I keep "loaning" them. I received my first copy in the mid-1950s as a horse/cowboy-loving teenager in Indiana. My USFS Ranger uncle sent it to me because he knew....!!! Knew it would be another huge nudge in getting me out to the Great Pacific Northwest other than just for visits. I made it in 1968 and my husband and I have visited the area depicted in the book countless times. I will soon turn 70 and have enjoyed reading this book every few years throughout my life. It is most compelling. The reviews of others are definitely right on. What more can I say other than, read it?

Pan Phillips had the "Pan Phillips International Airport" at his fishing camp beyond Anahim Lake B.C. For several years, we flew into his little airport between 2 lakes. Pan told us some of the same stories that are in this book. Louis Soukup was one of the first pilots to the area. Louis would fly in, any equipment that Pan needed, on the pontoons of his airplane. This book gives the stories as though you were sitting at the feet of the men who were the first settlers in this area of British Colombia. It is really an adventure to read.

We own the Legacy Ranch high in the mountains of Northeastern Utah. For years we have loved the beauty of the unspoiled wilderness. Nursing newborn elk calves, watching Canadian Lynx outside their lairs, and many other adventures have cast us in the mold of lovers of the wilderness. To read the adventures of true cowboys, who started with nothing else but their "grit" and ended up with lives spent plumbing the depths of fun and hard work was one of the top literary experiences of our lives. This book, far better than the sequels, will be part o four Christmas giving this year.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing To It!.......1999-12-12

Nothing to reading it, that is. This is one of the first nonfictions books I've read that I have ever liked. I got interested in it when I saw the TV show 'Nothing Too Good For A Cowboy' and had to read the books. This book made me laugh and almost made me cry. The characters are too funny and very heart-warming.

    Book Description

In her vibrant first novel Sisters of Grass, Theresa Kishkan weaves a tapestry of the senses through the touchstones of a young woman's life. Anna is preparing an exhibit of textiles reflecting life in central British Columbia a century ago. In a forgotten corner of a museum, she discovers a dusty cardboard box containing the century-old personal effects of a Nicola valley woman. Fascinated by the artifacts, she reconstructs the story of their owner, Margaret Stuart. Margaret, the daughter of a Native mother and a Scottish-American father, she tries to fit into both worlds. She's taught photography by a visiting Columbia University anthropology student that she falls in love with. With strong, poetic language, Kishkan makes the past reverberate through the present in a richly patterned work celebrating the complexities and joys of life and the sustaining connections of family.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and meaningful.......2007-02-25

Sisters of Grass is one of the most beautiful books I have read. Kishkan is a master at lyrical writing that brings nature alive. The characters are sympathetic, and the structure of the book is smart. She leaves you wanting more rather than overplay the story. Another fabulous Canadian author. Check out Margaret Laurence too.

4 out of 5 stars A vivid sense of place and time.......2002-07-19

One of the most difficult of achievements for a novelist is to truly convey the essence of life in another time but Theresa Kishkan's portrayal of life in the frontier country of the Nicola Valley of British Columbia at the turn of the twentieth century rings absolutely true. And anyone who has ever visited the Nicola Valley will smell again the scent of the air, feel the heat on their skin and hear the bird songs, so evocative is her language. A wonderfully accomplished book.

I had only a brief five day visit to the DR in the Fall of 2006 for a wedding. Even though I was traveling with a local-speaking partner who had been to the DR many times, I still bought the Lonely Planet book and used it to help build an itinerary. I only had a chance to visit the Southeast corner of the country, as well as the city of Santo Domingo. The Lonely Planet guide helped me find clean and affordable accomodations for less than $50USD/night right on the beach where we rented a local fishing boat for two days to go diving and snorkeling in the local reefs. I'm looking forward to going back to explore other parts of the country. Rental cars were inexpensive, but driving in the DR is an experience as it almost seemed like a "free-for-all" at times. The main Interstate is well maintained, but a majority of the local roads are not. The Lonely Planet guide ~as always~ was accurate and helpful.

There is nothing in this book regarding Haiti. Amazon lists the title of this book as "Lonely Planet Dominican Republic (Lonely Planet Dominican Republic & Haiti)" and this isn't correct. Now I have to pay to ship it back to them. Thanks Amazon!

1 out of 5 stars Is Lonely Planet Slipping.......2006-03-28

I have been a great fan of the Lonely Planet guides for years and have used them in Central America and Australia and places that I have just dreamed of going. But this one seems to be written by people who were just afraid to travel or only spent a week here. I have lived in the DR for two years now and once lived in Haiti. Sorry ' LP' I think perhaps your reporters are getting a bit soft. Where is my beloved guide to the world of toilet-seats-optional hotels. This one even rates some of the VERY pricey all inclusive resorts that are just Cancun. My former LP guides would not even include these monsters. Yup -the Rough Guide is better.

3 out of 5 stars too much history, not enough helpful info.......2005-07-11

I am about to leave to study abroad in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. I bought this book, as well as the Rough Guide to the DR. I think the Rough Guide is far superior to the Lonely Planet guide.

First of all, since this is a guide book for the DR as well as Haiti, only half of the book is devoted to info about the DR. And a lot of that information is about the DR's history. If you are really interested in learning about the extensive history of every historical monument in Santo Domingo, then maybe this book is for you. But if you want to know about good restaurants, bars or hostels, Lonely Planet will give you an extremely short list, with vague reviews.

If you are planning on spending a lot of time in Santo Domingo, I would definitely recommend the Rough Guide. The Rough Guide and Lonely Planet pretty much have the same info about other parts of the country, but it seems like the author of Rough Guide actually spent the night at the places, hung out with locals, etc., while the Lonely Planet author seems like he went around and grabbed a bunch of brochures and only stepped inside most of the places.

The only bonus about this book is that is does provide really helpful info about Haiti, and tells about lots of cool places to visit in Port-Au-Prince. It talks about how to interact with Haitians as a tourist (because you will be unable to blend in). If you plan on traveling to Haiti, you should get this book.

We'll see which book really proves more helpful when I arrive, but so far, I have mainly been relying on Rough Guide as my main source of research and information.

This is a great travel guide. I had taken this book with me to DR on a road trip with my friends (who lives in DR). This guide had detailed maps and descriptions on hotels and which places to visit. overall a great book. always trust lonely planet.

A leader in travel guides, Lonely Plant once again proves it self as the leader in the industry with this excellent guide to traveling to/throughout the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Although Haiti's tourism industry is nearly nonexistent, the guide still provides the readers with information on attractions, accommodations, and safety issues.

In covering the neighboring Dominican Republic, the book provides much more information for this country which has seen a major boom in its' tourism industry since the late 1980s. Always informative with tidbits if information, history, maps, and information for singles and gay & lesbian travelers, the "Lonely Planet Dominican Republic and Haiti" is the best book for anyone planning a trip to the island of Hispaniola. Excellent guide for an excellent price.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide of the Isle of Hispaniola.......2003-07-13

                      Book Description

General Davis was once described by the media as one of the most infamous criminals to emerge in Central New York. In the late seventies and early eighties, he was one of the key figures in the creation and running of the Corleones a gang of inner city youth whose members were responsible for committing various crimes in and around the city of Syracuse. As the leader of the gang, and for almost two decades, he led a life of crime. General Davis was arrested several times and charged with a number of crimes, many of them serious enough to warrant long jail sentences, had he been convicted. Yet in spite of many highly publicized trials, he succeeded in beating most of the charges, and didn't serve any long jail sentences. He was unstoppable, it seemed, until several members of the gang were implicated in a daring armed robbery that General Davis found himself facing a jail sentence. Even then, he managed to secure for himself a short jail sentence. In prison, he found religion and decided to dedicate himself to helping to teach, counsel and guide the youth to stay away from crime, violence, drugs and the streets, and to stick to getting an education. It is a poignant life story that delves into the gangster lifestyle and reveals the inner most feelings of a young African American who figured out a way to survive shoot outs with rival gang members, ambushes, constant harassment from law enforcement agencies, and finally dealing with the frustration of life as an ex-convict and ex- gang leader.

I bought this book to see what to look for in a longarm machine. I found it very informative and helpful. I also was surprised to see the information on choosing a quilter if that was what you needed. The patterns in the back were nice to have also. Over all, I enjoyed this book and feel it is a good resource if you are looking for a longarm machine.

The book, written by an elderly lady, is quite to the point and gives very practical advices. The photographs are not too glossy but give a good inpression what roof gardening is all about.

BALCONY, TERRACE AND PATIO GARDENING is a friendly little book filled with observations about the "change" in life, when one must, alas, abandon the larger garden and cultivate an appreciation of horticulture on a much smaller scale. Although Margaret Davis is writing from the perspective of one who has had much experience in larger areas and her target audience is the retired individual like herself who faces this prospect of downsizing, her discovery of the positive aspects of working in a reduced space such as a balcony or townhouse lot are relevant to younger folks who find themselves in similar circumstances with desire to grow favorite plants they knew as children.

Ms Davis understands that some of the most difficult aspects of balcony gardening will probably be wind control, equipment storage, and perhaps, if you are located within the 10 feet or so near the ground, pests. However, if you are fortunate enough to have some sunlight you can grow a variety of sun-lovers such as roses and various herbs. Bougainvilla might work if the climate is warm enough and Camillas will thrive in shade. Hanging baskets are a must, and vegetables are not outside the realm of possibility. Ms Davis is thrilled with citrus trees, but I have only managed to kill them. She also says walls have great potential for trellises that can act as plant supports.

The downside of this book is that it is not well illustrated. The text is dotted with very small black and white photos, and the publishers included a small section of color plates in the center of the book, but other than cryptic notes such as "window view" "Chrysanthemum bonsai in Tokyo" the pictures are not terribly well captioned. Some of them are beautiful, like the photo of the fuchia growing on a patio table. The best shot was placed on the cover and shows an actual composition. Buy this book for Ms Davis narrative which is friendly and unassuming.

For vegetable gardeners who dread winter and grocery store produce aisles, Jeff Ashton has an answer, and it's this: don't allow the cold to come. Cover your plants like you would a child in a crib. The 12 Month Gardener is a book about defying the tyranny of seasons by building contraptions that control the plant's environment. It's a clearly written, detailed guide to constructing row covers, tunnels, and greenhouses.

A personal and anecdotal introduction is followed by teacherly, informative chapters on topics such as "Materials, Tools, and Construction Hints," "Vegetables for Cold Weather Gardens," and "The Ultimate Greenhouse." Specific building processes are explained in clear prose, although some knowledge of carpentry is required to fully understand the directions.

This is a book very much for gardeners who've become addicted to the taste of a fresh-picked tomato's sugars or the delicate texture of raw homegrown spinach. Beyond that, it also shows you how to be imaginative and proactive about the environment of your garden. With a bit of work, you don't have to say farewell to the growing season if you aren't ready to. --Emily White

Although I do not intend to go to the lengths that the author does, I have gleened numerous ideas, many of which I have already put to use in the short time I have owned the book. If you are serious about extending your season, this is the book to buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!.......2001-12-30

I love this book, and will refer to it often.
Mr. Ashton has provided the reader with clear photos and excellent instructions for a large variety of season extenders. He also explains WHY he prefers certain materials over others.
Reading this book, written by someone more experienced will be a big help to those of us just starting out.
I can't wait to get started!

Ive been on hard core acid suppressent drugs for years and had huge problems every time i tried to go off them. Within a week i would have to start taking them again. Anyway i started reading this book and immediately stopped taking the nexium and started using superzymes. I dont quite understand how this works exactly but it does. Im just so relieved to not have to rely on those drugs anymore! Give it a go!

whose heartburn was made worse by taking more acid. I suspect that much heartburn is caused by stress, which produces TOO MUCH stomach acid. It's always suspicious when EVERY review is 5 stars.

This book was recommended by my Internist as a must read. He was so right as this book was all about my problems and answered all my questions. The research was a plus as I always check my facts. I in the future I too will recommend this book.

As a medical student, I've found this book to be spectacularly insightful and important. The book is simple, yet profound in it's explanations. The conclusions are logical and strongly substantiated.

                                          Very important book.

Highly rated by my clinical nutritionist. If a person has taken acid blockers for an extended period of time it's a must read. The downside is the authors try to overemphasize a point and the book gets a little boring.

On my shelf I have several works by Wendell Berry. I'm a great admirer of both his poetry and his essays. So when I found this title in Lewisville, KY while I was on an extended boat journey down the Ohio River I didn't hesitate to buy it. The book is divided into eight short chapters and begins with Harlan Hubbard embarking on his "New Life," just after the death of his mother, a new life that would eventually carve a place for him in Kentucky Legend. This "New Life" involved his marriage to Anna and their trip down the Ohio and Mississippi River in their now-famous Shantyboat. Chapters two and three in large part explain Hubbard's Thoreau-like philosophy. Chapter four is an analysis of Hubbard's painting. Chapter five is about Hubbard's wife, Anna, and the role she played in shaping his life. Chapters six and seven are about Hubbard in late life, after Anna's death. As with all of Berry's writing, this book is insightful and honest. Berry does a good job of summing up the life and work of Harlan Hubbard, a man with "no theories to prove" but who "merely wanted to try living by [his] own hands." The reason I cannot give the book five stars is that the information on Anna seems sketchy. Berry knew Harlan and Anna, yet the information on Anna seems to be mostly drawn from Hubbard sources. Moreover, there seems to be a serious error in fact on page 4 when Berry writes: "Anna was...the second of three daughters." Mia Cunningham, in her book ANNA HUBBARD: OUT OF THE SHADOWS, reveals that Anna was the oldest of three daughters. (Cunningham, who grew up in the Hubbards' house, visited them at their homestead on the Ohio River, and corresponded with Anna a number of years, supports this fact with photographs). Anna's status as oldest daughter is important, since the oldest daughter was expected in those days to stay home and care for her aging parents. This Anna rebelled against, instead opting for a life of her own making. I also bristled a bit at the comment: "Anna was as adventurous a cook as Harlan was a provider..." While it is true that Anna was an excellent homemaker, Berry doesn't seem to hint at Anna's more heroic qualities. Anna lived a life that was independent, unconventional, and exciting--even before she met Harlan Hubbard. Still, for those interested in Ohio River History, 20th Century painters, homesteading, and environmental issues, this is good resource. If you're truly interested in both Hubbards, I highly recommend Mia Cunningham's book to read along with Berry's.
