Middle of the road but that's all you get on this subject.......2000-09-06
I have been hunting around for books on Acapulco, and basically I've found that it is a weak area for the established travel authors. This book lacks the kinds of detail and "meat" that you expect in a travel book, but again, so does the competition. Perhaps it has to do with the destination? If you can accept the paucity of good information on Acapulco, then this book covers the bases. It gives enough restaurant and club names to pass muster, gives the necessary travel warnings and hints, and tells you where you need to be given your wants. You can read all of this book in 2 hours. Nice size for traveling but not such a good reference book for getting around.
Book Description
Teddy Roosevelt, the favorite political role model of Bill Clinton and both George Bushes, is legendary for his political acumen and for bending the world to his will. Yet where did he learn how to master the rough-and-tumble of politics? Not by weightlifting and boxing, nor by heading out west to try cattle-ranching, nor even as a Rough Rider in Cuba. He was far more than simply a self-made man or a crusading outsider who reinvented politics wholesale. The story of his political education has never fully been told and is every bit as entertaining as his more famous nonpolitical exploits.
Paul Grondahl knows New York political history as well as anyone, from the long-reigning machine of the Albany Democrats to the great Tammany chieftains who lorded over New York City. After working in the State Senate briefly before turning to journalism and writing about Albany politics and history for the past two decades, he knows the colorful byways and larger-than-life characters who made late nineteenth-century political life into one of the most amusing and fascinating periods in our history. In I Rose like a Rocket, Grondahl reveals the true story of Roosevelt's preparation for the White House: not one of self-making so much as a classic political education. From his earliest days as an assemblyman in Albany to his service as police commissioner in New York and civil service commissioner in Washington, Roosevelt learned invaluable lessons from the giants of his day. He was nearly roughed up twice by Democratic toughs in Albany and he suffered terrible defeats at the more-experienced hands of machine masters "Easy Boss" Thomas C. Platt and "Honest John" Kelly; yet he also learned how to manipulate and co-opt the press, how to harness public pressure and bipartisan allies, and how to fight for his desires from sunrise to sunset and beyond.
The product of Grondhal's research is one of the most important books ever written about Teddy Roosevelt. To learn of the inspirations and motivations of the young TR will cause readers to pause, reexamine, and reinterpret their views of him.
Roosevelt was driven by demons, yet he learned how to harness those inside himself as well as the more fleshly versions who fought him at every turn. The story of his political education is one of the most entertaining, instructive, and inspiring of that of any American president.

This is a great read..........2005-06-19
In today's world, Teddy Roosevelt would be classified as a sickly geek. As a boy, he had severe bouts of asthma, wore thick glasses and even at age 23 only weighed 130 pounds. This book reveals the people and events that shaped his life. He lost a substantial portion of his inherited wealth when the cattle market collapsed in the 1890's.
Teddy really had multiple concurrent careers, he wrote lots of letters on a daily basis, and he also wrote lots of books and magazine articles, which became the backbone of how he supported his family. The salaries for the various political positions that he held were meagar but he had a terrific work ethic and almost unlimited amounts of energy.
This book is also a ray of sunshine and hope. The 1880's and 1890's were full of corrupt political hacks and yet Teddy found a way to succeed without sacrificing his integrity.
This is a great read and it is my pleasure to recommend it to one and all.
I so enjoyed this book that I wish the author would write a follow-up book on his presidency and the remainder of his life.

Wonderful material.......2005-05-29
TR has always been one of my two favorite Presidents (the other being JFK), and this book is more than just your typical biography on him. It takes the unique angle of writing only about TR's life and political career before he became President, starting with his childhood and going through his political development, service in government, personal triumphs and tragedies, stint as a Rough Rider, time as Vice President, and finally having the last chapter be about his famous late-night ride to take the Oath of Office after President McKinley finally succumbed to his gunshot wound. We learn about how his experiences during this part of his life formed his political philosophy and development, making this incredible human being into the astute incredible President and politician he became over time. Mr. Grondahl really knows how to do his research and how to make it interesting and relevant instead of just some dry recounting of facts, names, and dates. It was also an added bonus how the author lives in the same area as I do.
What an index!.......2005-02-27
This book was an interesting look at the early life of Theodore Roosevelt, but the true masterpiece here is the index. Perfectly alphabetical and full of surnames followed by given names, the index deserves a Pulitzer all its own!
An explosive mix.......2004-09-25
A fascinating book. Paul Grondahl shows TR's political rise as an explosive combination of two different factors or forces -- one internal and one external.
These forces are on display on the cover of the book. The title ("rose like a rocket") suggests the circumstances that quickly propelled TR into political opportunity. New York, and the nation, were ripe for a patrician reformer. Yet, as the book makes clear, Roosevelt's life consisted as much of sorrow as of opportunity. So external events are insufficient to explain his success.
The subtitle ("political education") suggests the more important factor -- TR's intellectually aggressive approach to life, which enabled him to constantly improve by learning from his mistakes. Roosevelt himself seldom admitted to mistakes. So it takes a great journalist and historian like Grondahl to extract those lessons for us. A very enjoyable piece of detective work!
How a sickly boy became a powerhouse.......2004-08-03
It is amazing how Teddy made it to adulthood, let alone bull his way to the top of New York's political scene. His determined mind set against the political corruption of the time is inspiring. We watch as his experiences mold his character and his drive. Grondahl's book unfolds this oft overlooked portion of Teddy'a life and is a necessary read for those who really want to meet Teddy Roosevelt.

Excellent quality colour photos.......1999-12-21
Excellent book for a general overview of the breed. I would recommend it to anyone with either a general interest in the breed or a specific interest. The colour photos are of an incredible quality and give the newcomer especially an idea as to the varying colours of the Tibetan Spaniel.

Great Purchase.......2007-10-11
I am very pleased with my purchase. The condition of the book was as described and it arrived in a timely manner.
Big Girl Knits.......2007-09-16
This book is just what big Girls who knit need. It's witty, funny and the patterns are lovely and inspiring. Definitely a very well written book.
A bad attempt at a cool idea.......2007-09-10
It is books like this that I really hope inspire others to write better ones - with better patterns, better looking models and a kinder, more creative title.
I have to agree with the other reviewers that the patterns are awful! They have no shape to them, don't lay right and the designs are ugly. After 2 pattern attempts I just gave up. Eventhough I was not to keen on any of the patterns I did want to try one out as a gift.
I find the items suggested in this book to be ones that would be the rejects at stores that majority of larger women would never dare be seen in. Come on! Our clothes have to reflect the abundance of personality and class a beautiful bigger woman usually has!
Would it have hurt to hire models that didn't look so frumpy? What makes an okay looking top become a bad one is if the model looks like she hasn't done her hair or makeup. The models selected for this book provide zero stimulation to the items they are suppose to be inspiring to create. I am not talking about hiring supermodels, but the least thing these models could have done were comb their hair, put some lipstick on and smile and make us think the tops were really fun to wear!
Lastly, I find the book's title unintelligent and frankly offensive. When did a word (big) that we use towards children to encourage them to be mature and respectful become such a negative term towards women's bodies? Society really needs to embrace the words that really describe our bodies... voluptuous, curvy, healthy, etc... Would it have killed the authors to name it "Venus Girl Knits" or "Vivacious Voluptuous Women Knits"?
I really hope this book inspires some more creative bound books in the future. It was a great idea that has so much more potential in the market. I personally do not recommend this one at all.
To all big girl knitters don't miss this one!!.......2007-07-09
This is a wonderful book full of fashionable knits for we big beautiful women. There is an excellent forward with all you need to know about dressing to suit your size and the importance of measuring ourselves correctly.
Although all the patterns are not to my taste, most of them are and I had a hard time deciding what to knit first.
I can't wait for the next one.
Thanks
Abrasive.......2007-06-21
I find this book informative and vulgar. The authors' use of inappropriate inuendoes and offensive language destroyed any desire to support their efforts at having written this book. Sometimes trying to be funny when you are not only makes the attempt worse. As a confident full bodied woman I have no need for such demoralizing humor. The book was returned...and yes I do appreciate the authors' attempts at creating knitting patterns for women of substance.

My Lifesaver.......2007-03-03
I have just gotten done referring someone to this book... for about the 20th time. I discovered this book about 10 years ago, don't remember from who or where... but I can tell you that it has been my bible! I reference it continually. I first purchased it when my son was 11 and starting to "assert" his independance. I am very happy to say that he is now a 21 year old college student, who is also my good friend. We have established a wonderful, respectful relationship with each other, and I owe alot of it to the thought processes and action I took (and didn't take), after reading this book. I am still referencing it with my 16 year old daughter and the relationship method has been wonderful in helping to understand and react to her growing "learning to leave home". I highly recommend this book!
A Fresh Perspective..........2006-08-24
This book challenges parents to examine the underlying reason that teens act the way they do.....namely, that they are moving toward independence. They need to figure out the world and their place in it as separate from their parents. Kirshenbaum gives examples of ways in which teens assert their independence and gives ideas how parents can facilitate this process while still giving their teens loving guidance.
A great resource for parents during the maddeningly difficult teen years.
Breath of Fresh Air.......2005-09-06
I found this book to be a loving and humanistic approach to childrearing with respect for your children as individuals, and offers appreciation for their changing needs as they grow older. As a matter of fact, I think this book is a wonderful perscription for ANY close relationship.
Finally!.......2005-08-31
Finally there is a source out there to really enlighten parents and help us back to the place of believing in the organic nature of our teenagers and their developmental paths.
Often it's difficult to know what can work--so it's refreshing to understand and come to know what CAN'T work when relating to our maturing children.
Easy to read, easy to understand, and worthy of implementing into our daily lives....A real GEM!
Parent/Teen Breakthrough.......2002-12-09
Excellent book for parents with preteens and teens. It is full of very compelling examples of behaviors that can be expected if a solid relationship between the parent and child has not been established. The crux of the problem is often the parent. We are comfortable controlling our children (it works) when they are smaller and we're quite surprised when they begin to mature and really need us to be a best friend. The book does not preach, but clarifies the value of building a new relationship. Perfectly appropriate for people of any religious faith. It is a gift that I give to parents very often.

Book Description
Annette Kuhn has earned a wide reputation as a theorist of culture, dissecting film and other images in books like Women's Pictures and The Power of the Image. In this compelling book, she turns her attention to the deconstruction of pictures closer to homephotographs from her own childhood and images from her shared ethnographic pastto trace a trajectory from personal to collective acts of memory.
