Not as good as others here suggest.......2006-11-03
The Maverick guide to Bermuda didn't meet the high expectations set by other reviews here.
There isn't a whole lot to the book, it isn't full of secret suggestions as others suggested. Instead there is much on the obvious basics and little beyond.
Our family did enjoy the chapter discussing some of the colorful history of Bermuda, but otherwise I regret the purchase. I suspect one of the other guidebooks would have been a better choice.
I do recommend Bermuda!
Directed us to delightful places not in any other guide book.......2004-12-31
After taking a tour at the Botanical Gardens, we followed Ms. Harriott's recommedation and ate at the hospital cafe across the street. And who did we see but our tour guide from the gardens. Boy, was he surprised to see us! How did we ever find out about this place?? The Maverick Guide, of course. The fish cakes are delicious, by the way. This book is a great way to get to out-of-the way places and a real flavor of Bermuda. Highly recommended!
Great For Tourists, Bermudians AND Travel Agents!.......2004-07-30
This book is incredible; Ms. Harriott obviously knows Bermuda extremely well and has checked and re-checked her information. As someone specializing in helpling people plan their Bermuda vacations I constantly use the book as a resource. It has been invaluable to me.
As far as the slight error mentioned in another review I don't think there is a soul out there that doesn't know September 11th as the date our world crashed down. It was obviously an editorial mistake!
Worried about the accuracy of this book............2004-07-30
Page 22: "Important Note: Since the events of September 9, 2001, to ensure the safety of your flight the airline rules have changed dramatically..."
Although the parts I did read I enjoyed, this seemed like rather a large error and made me question the accuracy of the rest of the information. Unless I missed something in the news on 9/9/01.
The ONLY Book You Need.......2000-06-10
I am in my 16th year in Bermuda and consequently have read dozens of books about Bermuda. This one is it. Anyone asking for information on this country will receive my highest recommendation for this extensively researched work. The scope and detail, the double cover map, and the easy reading style provide an invaluable resource for not only tourists but new residents and locals as well. Every Bermudian home should have this book on hand.
Book Description
One of America's greatest Christmas stories and also one of its very first -- from the period between the end of the Revolutionary War and the ratification of the Constitution -- was a creation of none other than George Washington. The story isn't just about Washington coming home for Christmas for the first time since the war began, but about the character of our most important Founding Father and about the precedent he set for democratic leadership. It is the story of a loving husband, a beloved military leader, and above all, a humble and great man.
In late November 1783 when Washington finally received formal notice of the signing of a peace treaty with England he had little more than a month to accept the transfer of power from British troops in New York; to bid farewell to his troops; and to resign his commission to Congress if he hoped to make it to Mount Vernon for Christmas. He could have remained in charge of the army and become a virtual king to the Americans who loved him. Control of the newly forming government was his to take -- yet he chose to resign. It was that decision, coupled with his later decision to step down from the presidency after two terms, that rendered him "the greatest character of the age" (according to none other than King George III).
Washington's homeward journey is one of the most moving and inspiring stories from his great and eventful life. When he bade farewell to his troops at Fraunces Tavern in New York City there were no dry eyes. When he reached Congress and gave a retirement speech, it cemented his greatness more fully than had his victory over the British. When he made it to Mount Vernon, finally, on Christmas Eve, it could not have been a happier homecoming.
General Washington's Christmas Farewell is a deeply moving Christmas story as well as a great American story.
Customer Reviews:
This engaging little book will draw you in. .......2007-02-14
The author makes a few sidetrips to explore a little background and history that bring the times alive. He explores how Washington was the heart and soul of the American cause as his farewell tour home from the war - from West Point in New York to Mt. Vernon - provided a foundation for unity, dignity and sense of common purpose for a new nation to be.
It's a slice of history that tells much more than the title implies, and it shows a very human side of a man who continues to surprise us with how worthy a model he is to follow. It's poignant without being maudlin, and is a history that appeals to both mind and heart. Highly recommended.
Captivating and Charming.......2005-12-21
This is a wonderful retelling of George Washington's return to Mount Vernon at the end of the Revolution. It humanizes Washington like few books ever have. Mr. Wintraub even manages to build up suspense as you wonder whether ex-General Washington makes it home in time for Christmas.
This is the second Christmas-themed history by Mr. Weintraub, the other being SILENT NIGHT, about the informal truce in 1914. Each time, Mr. Weintraub brings out the significance of seemingly minor events. It is truly masterful.
The turnover of power to the Congress........2004-10-05
The author does a good job of detailing why George Washington was a great man. Rather than become a King or dictator after the War of Independence, he returned his commission to the Congress and returned to Mount Vernon. This was after eight years of separation from his home. His only desire was to depart from the public stage and resume his private life. This was unlike most people who would have clung to power. Washington wanted to become a private citizen again. This book details his change from a military general to a private citizen.
Washington takes control of New York from the departing British,
says farewell to his soldiers and other officers, returns the commission to the Congress in Annapolis, and gets home in time for a Mount Vernon Christmas Eve. This brief period says alot what Washington was and why people wanted him to be their leader.
Weintraub does a good summary job of describing this two week episode in the life of the first American President. By his example, the military would always be controlled by the civilian government. The importance of Washington is shown in this short story and good read.
A Long Journey Home For The Original American Hero.......2004-09-15
This book is a masterwork. There may be other books on the subject, but I can't imagine any other book capturing the bittersweet moments of George Washington's return to Mount Vernon after the Revolution more poignantly than Stanley Weintraub does here. The book begins in November 1783 and details Washington's long trip home, and brilliantly captures the trials of long distance travel, as well as the joys of receiving the outpourings of gratitude from his countrymen as he passed through towns and villages.
The book gives great insight into the character of Washington and his amazing leadership qualities. I think any reader will better appreciate the suffering and personal sacrifice of this original American patriot after reading this book. The book details the drama of the signing of the final peace treaty with England (assisted by Benjamin Franklin in France), the withdrawal of English troops from New York (a fascinating and oft overlooked drama in and of itself), and the personal interactions of George Washington and other key leaders necessary to keep the coalition of States together in the fight against the British. Particular detail is reserved for efforts to meet the US Army payroll, which, then as now, had substantial Congressional problems as well as issues relating to unwillingness of some States to be taxed.
The most interesting facet of the book, though, is the examination of the personal motivations driving Washington. In contrast to most powerful leaders (and Washington at the time was revered enough that he turned down the opportunity to be King of the United States), Washington desired to do his duty, and once having completed his mission by winning the Revolutionary War, to retire from public service. Great detail is spent on the preparations necessary for Washington to resign his commission, and the account of the ceremony and celebrations involved are detailed, scrupulously researched, and thrilling to read.
This is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it to anyone, particularly to people who would like to know more about the emotions, motivations, and character of George Washington, the original American patriot.
Okay, but I ain't staying up late to finish it........2004-05-31
When the American Revolutionary war ended in November 1783, George Washington made up his mind that he was going to make it home to Mount Vernon by Christmas. But first he had to accept the transfer of power from the British, say his farewells to his troops, and resign his commission to Congress; only then could he begin his homeward journal. Washington barely made it home by Christmas, arriving on Christmas Eve.
This is a good story and well-written, but I can't imagine why it is given so many 5-star ratings. Some books are good because of action and some because of a build-up to an action-kind of like the calm before the storm. This story, on the other hand, is like the calm after the storm. There is no build up to anything really; everything exciting has already happened. Yes, it is good history, and somewhat of a touching story, but it isn't a 5-star book by any means.
It is a good book, and I am glad I read it; but after reading such glowing recommendations, I was somewhat disappointed. To those who already know a good deal about George Washington, there will probably not be anything presented in this book that they do not already know. To those that know little of George Washington, this book will offer some information they probably didn't' know.
But this is not a ground-shaking book. It is a well-written story about George Washington's desire to get home before Christmas. It is a story of a time of sorrowful farewells. And it is a story of a great man who could have been a king but walked away from it.
But don't go out and buy "General Washington's Christmas Farewell" thinking it is a book you will stay up at night reading because you can't put it down. It just isn't one of those books.
I would say that this book is better written than average, but the subject is less interesting than average, and it seems as if the author included some material just to increase the length of the book, so overall it equals out to a middle-of-the-road rating of 2-stars. I would have given it a 2-1/2 if I could, but I can't justify a three. Really, this isn't a book I recommend to someone to get them interested in history or George Washington. I would borrow this book from a library, not buy it.
I must learn to beware of those who write book reviews because they are paid by the publishing company to do so. It tends to distort the opinion, you know!
Product Description
From Publishers Weekly:
Lord Byron once called George Washington the "Cincinnatus of the West," and Weintraub's compelling account also compares the modern general to the ancient military leader who longed to return to his plow. Washington, weary after eight years of leadership on the battlefield, yearned to return to the life of a farmer at his beloved Mount Vernon, 1,800 acres of land alongside the Potomac River on which his plantation stood, but since he had accepted his commission in 1775, he had returned there only once. By the fall of 1783, after orchestrating the reoccupation of New York-his final act in a distinguished military career-Washington began his long journey back to his wife and home, anxious to arrive in time for Christmas. Drawing on Washington's letters and private papers, Weintraub, who had so much success with another Christmas break in Silent Night: The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce, recreates the general's four-week journey home. Along the way, Washington bid farewell to numerous colleagues, was feted in grand style in Philadelphia and Annapolis, and oversaw the transfer of power from the British monarchy to a former colony's republican government. In spite of weather-related delays, Washington arrived at his plantation on Christmas Eve. The general and his wife celebrated the holiday together with numerous guests by burning a Yule log, firing guns and eating heartily. Weintraub's graceful narration brings to life a distant time and place in America, capturing intimately Washington's loyal patriotism and his deep commitment to family.

Book Description
As a reward for testimony that helped to convict over one hundred criminals, career felon George "Bud" Taylor was put into the Federal Witness Security Program (WITSEC). This is his shocking, fist-person account of a federally sanctioned bureaucratic monster running amok as it provides the scum of the earth with proection, privelege... and, sometimes, a new license to rob, rape, and kill.

THE LIARS COLONY.......2003-11-01
I think you'll agree in this book that these "snitches" should have wound up in ditches! One who goes by the name "squeegie" (his picture is in the book)...BIG LIAR!He simply wanted to be in the fed protection program so he made up this elaborate story about a friend of mine and testified in court that got my friend "the chair".He is a MURDERER,if you ask me.People like this always wind up back stabbing when their heads are on the chopping board,as my now "sentenced to die" friend says.No telling how many innocent folks he has killed and will kill.Pretty good book though if you like fiction.
LIARS CLUB.......1999-01-11
Although the stories of other inmates were extremly interesting, I cannot help getting the impression that Mr. Taylor was lieing about his own accounts. He periodically put other inmates down saying they were not strong, cool, or street wise as he was, yet everyone else seem to have a better deal than he did. My oppinion of Taylor is, assuming all the stories are true in his book, that he is bitter and is putting down the system that probably saved his life. Even though no one knows for sure, I classify this book fiction. Sorry.

Book Description
Club Fed: Living Inside a Women's Prison is the story of Dr. Lynn Hartz's problems with the United States legal system and incarceration in a women's prison. Accused and convicted of mail fraud, a category for many crimes, she still maintains her innocence. Her lawyer was denied; her doctor wrote the judge a letter explaining her head injury and a memory problem. She was sent to a maximum-security mental health prison for a psychiatric evaluation. Paranoid, schizophrenic, psychotic, and manic-depressive inmates, as well as staff members are discussed. Her incarceration at Alderson Federal Women's Prison, the unjust situation and injustice, comprise most of the book. The spiritual struggle of Why me? and personal freedom are two major components throughout the book. People, activities, visits, and finances, as well as conflicts between inmates and staff are described. Thoughts, letters, and conversations with people on the inside and the outside, are included. The appendix includes poetry written in prison, a list of resources for prisoners and their families, and a section of references of work about women and prison.

Dated Material--Congress Has Since Achieved New Lows.......2006-05-17
Every story in "Club Fed" is extremely stale. This was supposed to be about money, sex, violence and power on Capitol Hill-and the best the author could serve up was Senator Bob Packwood, the clumsy kissing bandit who terrorized his female staff with unwanted romantic overtures.
The book reinforced my belief that the War Between the States was where things began to go irretrievably wrong for the USA. Reconstruction, I learned, is what first changed the role of government from organizer to provider. Many former slaves went to Washington D.C. for a "better life." In a flurry of activity, Congress attempted to make D.C. a Negro paradise. Later they gave up, but the effort encouraged the notion that social engineering is a legitimate function of government.
Extraneous trivia that I learned: the Library of Congress has 532 miles of shelves and receives 6000 new pieces of information arrive every day. 1/3 of these possessions are un-cataloged, and therefore of no practical use to anyone. I think this is a microcosm of the US governmental system.
Maybe this system would work better if we didn't give $557,000 per member to cover staff pay and expenses and $122,500 for office supplies (1994 figures). Assuming that not very much would get done without those staffs, getting rid of them is an obvious solution to the proliferation of regulations and laws.

Spook Spouse...What an incredible story...A Must to Read.......1999-07-29
Imagine this: You are suddenly surrounded by 16 FBI Agents...They tell you that your husband has been arrested and is in a High Security Federal Lockup...charged with TREASON...and if you do not cooperate fully, you too will be charged with treason. This makes those bad hair days quite palatable. A Spook Spouse,The Author, Nancy Tatum shares her experiences of being accused of 'guilt by association'. Her husband "Chip" Tatum, one of Americas finest spies was tucked away in a High Security Prison 'in the interest of National Security' unable to communicate with the outside world. She was guilty by association and this message needs to be understood. Live the lie, feel the pain, experience the dirty tricks used to try and turn this Spook Spouse on her unsuspecting husband. More than a story, this is A Preparedness Manual for what to expect as a defendant or family member of a defendant facing Federal Indictments . How to deal with attorneys, How to cope with jails, prisons, their systems, guards and other prisoners. And last of all how to win that appeal!!!
Tragedy for the American Trust in Justice.......1999-04-22
I have always suspected that the American Judicial System has been used as a means of intimidation and coersion. Two thumbs up to Ms. Tatum and her commitment to see justice met head on. The statistics are stammering for americans...and the recent events with the Clinton/Lewinski drama fell right into the authors superhiway of advice.
Excellent expose' of the Federal Department of Justice.......1999-04-19
This expose' hits at the heart of the dirty tricks department of the Federal Department of Justice. No private citizen is as safe and immune as he/she may think. This book will surely grow in popularity as the story is told. And watch for more from this author and her husband. Very revealing and written with an enjoyable attitude.

Excellent for beginners.......2006-10-25
Bead & Button Magazine is an excellent source for design inspiration and products, but it includes a lot of projects and articles that won't be helpful to the beginning beader. This book takes the best of the beading projects from various issues and puts them all in one place. Beginning beaders will find projects that they can do right away and different styles of beading to try when they are ready to branch out.
WOW - Let's get started!.......2006-07-11
I was anxious to start beading prior to getting this book. NOW, I can hardly wait. It really opened my eyes to all the possibilities! I know so much more about supplies, designs, and how easy it is - after reading this book. Job well done.
Getting Started beading.......2006-02-24
I really enjoyed my book, the instructions are easy to follow and I can see myself using the book for years to come.

So your adored son is nearing 30--or past it already--and still living at home, unable to hold onto a McJob for longer than six months running, relying on you to feed him and make his car payments. Your beautiful, brainy daughter is anorexic, or addicted to drugs, or unwilling to leave the man who hits her. Increasing numbers of baby boomers are finding that their grown children have fallen far short of their expectations. These parents are confused, angry, guilt-ridden, and ashamed. Jane Adams's When Our Grown Kids Disappoint Us is for them. She reveals the kinds of disappointments that other parents are facing: kids who are unable or unwilling to support themselves, kids who are addicts or convicts, kids who've joined cults or seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. She stresses that these are real problems--but that they aren't the parents' problems. Adams reassures parents that they've done their jobs and that they don't have to spend the rest of their lives picking up the pieces for their grown children, emotionally, financially, or otherwise. Continuing to prop up kids who've repeatedly fallen on their own teaches them nothing; it's just a temporary fix. Beyond offering sympathy, reassurance, and wisdom, the book doesn't lay out a plan for solving anyone's problems, but reading it may help disappointed parents shuck some of their guilt and shame, gather the courage to take back their own lives, and let their grown children fend for themselves. --Jennifer Lindsay
Book Description
How do today's parents cope when the dreams we had for our children clash with reality? What can we do for our twenty- and even thirty-somethings who can't seem to grow up? How can we help our depressed, dependent, or addicted adult children, the ones who can't get their lives started, who are just marking time or even doing it? What's the right strategy when our smart, capable "adultolescents" won't leave home or come boomeranging back? Who can we turn to when the kids aren't all right and we, their parents, are frightened, frustrated, resentful, embarrassed, and especially, disappointed?
In this groundbreaking book, a social psychologist who's been chronicling the lives of American families for over two decades confronts our deepest concerns, including our silence and self-imposed sense of isolation, when our grown kids have failed to thrive. She listens to a generation that "did everything right" and expected its children to grow into happy, healthy, successful adults. But they haven't, at least, not yet -- and meanwhile, we're letting their problems threaten our health, marriages, security, freedom, careers or retirement, and other family relationships.
With warmth, empathy, and perspective, Dr. Adams offers a positive, life-affirming message to parents who are still trying to "fix" their adult children -- Stop! She shows us how to separate from their problems without separating from them, and how to be a positive force in their lives while getting on with our own. As we navigate this critical passage in our second adulthood and their first, the bestselling author of I'm Still Your Mother reminds us that the pleasures and possibilities of postparenthood should not depend on how our kids turn out, but on how we do!
Customer Reviews:
Validating and Empowering!.......2007-09-30
This book helped me understand and accept that my kids could swallow my life up whole UNINTENTIONALLY and really get in the way of me doing the things that I really want to do in my life.
I have always believed that it is in my kids best interest for me to raise them exactly the same way I was (at least in certain areas). So, I paid for their college education, gave them each a Visa, bought them cars, offered to pay for graduate schools, trips, insurance, etc.
What I inadvertently created, thinking I was acting in their best interest as those things were helpful to me at their age, were two kids - one with an alcohol problem and the other who's really dependent on others to do everything for him.
Don't get me wrong, they are great kids overall - these are just two aspects that have been challenging to handle.
In any event, when I discovered my son had an alcohol problem - I changed my tune in a hurry. Part of the reason he has this illness is that he has a lot of pain in his life that he's not dealing with. However, my contribution to it has been to give him too much money so he has the funds to binge drink as well as make his life so easy for him that it was enabling him rather than empowering him.
He is in denial and doesn't realize the issue. This book helped me be okay with that, realize I've done all I could by offering him treatment, etc - and that I have a life that I deserve enjoying. And that's a good thing!
With the other one, I learned that most likely I may watch him "shoot himself in the foot" over and over again. I do my best to offer him my guidance ahead of time when he wants it but usually he's a lot smarter than me he says.
So, again, I've learned that he'll do it his way and that's okay.
Again, I'm free to live my life knowing I'll help both of them to the extent they want me to that works with MY life.
There are so many parents with varied experiences on this theme. The first part of the book talks about experiences similar to mine.
The second half, though, is where I really realized that I'm okay and in fact doing good by them AND by me.
My only criticism is the word "disappoint" in the title. I didn't relate to that word personally as I didn't feel disappointed - confused, challenged, angry yes. Not disappointed because that implies expectations and I really didn't have any.
Very validating, helpful and empowering for me as a parent and as a person who deserves to enjoy their life.
excellent book.......2007-06-27
i felt that the book gave alot of insight into the issues that confront parents about how to handle the difficult situations that our adult children expect us to be partners in solving their problems. they hold us accountable for thr mistakes and that tends to tear their relationship with us apart.
So now what??.......2006-12-19
Adams spends a lot of time describing cases but offers very little in solutions. I know now where we are; we just need directions back.
Boomer specific.......2006-08-15
It was specific to the baby boomer parents. So older parents would not benefit from this book. More often than not, it stated the obvious, rather than giving helpful suggestions.
A Lifealtering book.......2005-10-26
This book has been the best thing I have done for myself in years. I have passed it on to several others who feel the same way. It's MUST reading for a generation dealing with adult children and their inevitable problems.

Customer Reviews:
If you're interested in Everett, you'll probably enjoy this........2005-08-28
The mystery of Everett Ruess is a cool one. A guy walks into the desert, carves "Nemo" (Latin for "nobody") in two places on the canyon walls, and then disappears. It seems as if he set up his disappearance perfectly--he'd even talked about it before--and yet lots of evidence points to him being murdered. Seventy years have passed, and still no one knows for sure.
If you're already interested in this mystery, or would like an introduction it, "Sandstone Sunsets" is a good read. It's full of interesting theories and evidences that aren't commonly heard elsewhere, and it's a fairly well written.
It's funny though, in the About the Author, it says Mark Taylor has occasionally written for "Hustler" magazine, and in the book he often describes slickrock pinnacles and mounds as phallic, or breast-like. That cracks me up.
A ramble to nowhere.......2002-03-30
This book is a review of various hallucinations of the author encountered during his pointless wanderings (mostly by vehicle) through the desert country of the Southwest. He never seems to get to the locations of Ruess' disappearance, and evades them by taking us to Moab and other irrelevant places where he had happened to park his car in the past. He offers several far out theories on Ruess' disappearance, but nothing useful except for the names of several persons who might have absconded with Ruess' possessions but never capitalized on them. The author is the exploiter, capitalizing on the Ruess name and story to sell a book. Nice cover.
Best naturalist work on Escalante.......2001-01-17
This book is a most thoughtful and insightful view into the reasons we seek out nature and journey into the unknown. Like Ruess, author Taylor takes us on his own personal journey into one of the most breathtaking geographys in the world. The book is not meant to be a definative work on what happened to Ruess but rather a deep reflective journey into our souls. Unlike the previous reviewer who referred to the book as a novel, it is creative non-fiction and was named best creative non-fiction book of the year 1998 by the western writers of America. I have read the book three times and all the published reviews, more than twenty. All consider the writing excellent, thoughtful and filled with bits of philosophy about life. Critisms include editing errors.
A good read if you have explored Escalante National Monument.......2001-01-07
This book is not the book to buy, if you're looking for 1) an authoritative biography on the life of Everett Ruess 2) a groundbreaking investigativation into the circumstances surrounding Everett Ruess' disappearance 3) an exciting novel about daring adventures in the Escalante National Monument
The highs and lows of this book are in actuality quite mundane. From the bickering between hiker and irresponsible tourists and the silliness of shouting "Everett Ruess, where are you?" in the middle of nowhere.
However, having hiked Davis Gulch to Lake Powell, searching for hints to the Ruess mystery, and locating Nemo inscriptions, I still enjoyed this book.
The Escalante National Monument area, recently "protected" by Bill Clinton in his second term, is a fabulous wilderness area located in Southern Utah, near the Arizona border. To explore this area frequently is to know the story of Everett Ruess. Not just of the plot, but also the emotion that must have motivated Ruess to his untimely demise.
Sandstone Sunsets relates the story of Everett Ruess and more importantly the author's introspective search for the truth behind his disappearance. This book lacks any groundbreaking physical evidence or testimony, and certainly doesn't reach the level of depth that Krakauer's novel "Into the Wild" achieves in examining the journey of Alex McCandless. Of course it's a lot more difficult task for the author, since the aforementioned events took place a generation ago.
Taylor (the author) reaches some pretty wild conclusions and speculations. Nevertheless from the perspective of someone who has been to Escalante repeatedly, I found the novel very entertaining. Sandstone Sunsets deals with physical territory with which I'm familiar with, and passionate about. And it's a novel motivated out of interest in a topic, Everett Ruess, who has lived on to demonstrate to modern day outdoor enthusiasts, that fascination with the wilderness is not just a new trend made hip by SUV commercials.
A search for Everett becomes a search for self........1999-02-26
I recommend Taylor's book to you who have read W.L.Rusho's "Everett Reuss" and understand Everett's mystical nature in his exploration of himself as well as the wilderness he so loved. Also your appreciation will be greatly enhanced if you are familiar with the country Everett traveled. This book is not a serious effort to solve the mystery of Everett's disappeareance. Rather, as Taylor retraces Everett's steps he describes his own spiritual journey; his personal counterpart to Everett's quest over the same territory a half century earlier. Taylor writes, "I knew my search for Everett had become more important than finding him." Reuss was a romantic, so is Taylor. The inner exporation is what counts, the physical exploration merely the vehicle for self-undertanding. If you are literal minded this book will disappoint. Me, I enjoyed the book. I thought it well written and organized and a quick, easy read. It enriched my understanding of the spiritual journey of Everett and its parallel in my own life. A negative. I found the speculations about Emery Kolb, etc, so far-fetched as to be bizarre; but Taylor never offers these as serious possibilities. Still, it were better had they been omitted. There were some minor errors in the book as has been pointed out by other reviewers; but they appeared to me to be editing mistakes, not those of the author. All in all, for me a very worthwhile read; but then I am so in love with Everett Reuss I make no claim to objectivity.
Book Description
This important volume brings together leading clinicians and researchers to present cognitive-behavioral approaches to treating PTSD and other trauma-related symptoms and disorders. Solidly grounded in the latest theory and research, chapters describe pragmatic, clinician-friendly strategies for working with problems that are prevalent across a variety of trauma experiences, including intrusion and arousal, guilt, anger, substance abuse, dissociation, and relationship issues. Readers gain a deeper understanding of the goals and methods of trauma education, therapeutic exposure, stress management training, cognitive reprocessing, and other interventions, and learn techniques for defusing negative self-talk, working with traumatic memories, and helping clients develop new trauma narratives. Throughout, the volume emphasizes the importance of situating symptomatic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in their interpersonal and environmental contexts, instead of focusing on trauma history alone or viewing clients through a lens of individual dysfunction.

Great practical and scholarly guide to working in trauma.......1999-09-24
This book represents an exhaustive review of various cognitive-behavioral approaches to the treatment of trauma. It is scholarly and founded on strong scientific research without being pedantic or preachy. Amost every chapter has real-life clinical examples with actual narrative transcripts which can be quite compelling. I especially like the chapters on treating dysfunctional guilt and on dissociation, areas seldom discussed in traditional behavioral circles. All in all, I think this is a great addition to the library of any clinician dealing with emotional trauma.

Preliminary Sakya Mahayana Text with little Vajrayana.......2006-02-16
This book contains H. E. Kunga Tenpai Nyima, Ven. Deshung Rinpoche III's (1906-87) oral commentary @ Jetson Sakya Center NYC 9/7/72-2/26/80 on Ngorchen Konchog Lhundrub's 1543 CE The Beautiful Ornament of Three Visions. Lhundrub also wrote an advanced Sakya Vajrayana sequel, The Beautiful Ornament of Three Continua, unavailable in English. p. 491: "Lhundrub says...this teaching is meant for the student who has just undertaken the Mahayana path &...masters ...trying to help their students progress along that path & p. 315: is based on the teachings of the sutras, although there is some Vajrayana mixed in with it." Yet, the p. xxxiii: "Lamdré system is derived from the Tantra Trilogy of Hevajra." It's 522 pp., readable, preliminary--but with some good insights. The 3 visions are: non-Buddhist, on the path; & enlightened. The author is ecumenical: p. 136: "It makes no difference whether you undertake practice according to the Sakya school or one of the other Tibetan orders. You will find identical teachings in them all, pp. 143-4: There is no real difference among the schools in terms of philosophy, systems of practice, conduct, or ultimate result...only minor variations in emphasis due to the tradition & history of their arising, & p. 261: In essence, the Lamdré doesn't differ at all from the other meditation systems that were practiced in Tibet, such as the Mahamudra doctrines of the Kagyu & Gelug. All these doctrines & techniques of the Tantric path are authentic," but you can't tell from this book. It has much dogma & mythology (unsupported information) e.g. extensive descriptions of hells--but later called merely creations of mind. As a discontinuous lecture series, chapters include redundancies but have intriguing poetic names. Topics include the 6 perfections, calm abiding, tonglen (says it's necessary to Buddhahood), Bodhichitta, compassion (but not the other Immeasurables) & thoughtful analyses of helping others & impure vision/mental filtering. He denies danger to tonglen (exchanging self for others) since "Karma is not transferable in this way" overlooking psychosomatic illness & ESP. He implies calm abiding requires being monastic & denies existence of self (e.g. p. 420: "The conception that a single entity can be made of countless particles is illogical" vs. set theory/statistics & displays the usual cultural gap with the West). However, he gives valuable insight into mind--p. 461: "There is no external Vajrapani, that Vajrapani is nothing more than the nature of your mind...When a student does her Vajrayogini retreat & recites the mantra, she is not meditating devotedly on some wonderful deity but simply on a recognition of Vajrayogini within who is nothing more or less than the nondual clarity & emptiness of her mind" & supports/references women & chöd. I liked best--p. 17: "A yogi sees time as discrete moments or flashes of instants. He perceives things much more finely, much more subtly, & may be able to see that there is no real continuity of time. He would view the idea of continuity as a mere human conceptualization & would also see that instants of time are in themselves not only momentary but discrete; p. 26: by knowing one thing, you can understand all things; p. 263: Taking the result as one's path...`The cause is the result, & the result is the cause;' p. 300: Mind Is the most important thing. It is mind that attains enlightenment. Enlightenment occurs through mental actions; p. 323: Train yourself in giving what is commensurate with your ability to give freely; p. 338: We have, as practitioners, to internalize the teachings that we hear or read about in books;" & most provocative--pp. 463-4: "The person who is enlightened no longer perceives beings or has a concept of himself as a benefactor of beings."
When you start to get serious..........2004-11-27
Three Levels of Spiritual Perception introduces the reader into the Lam Dre system of spiritual practice. The book is a record of ongoing teachings given orally by Deshung Rinpoche the "Saint of Seattle", in the U.S. Deshung Rinpoche takes great care to make sure that those who are unfamiliar with Buddhist practice have all they need to understand him and the material he offers them.
The Lam Dre first arose in India; the Mahasiddha Virupa (great scholar and tantric yogin) first taught it. Since then, many, many practicioners have relied on it completely. The Sakya school in Tibet is responsible for having kept the Lam Dre alive through practice, practice, practice. And this set of practices bears very sweet fruit. Deshung Rinpoche's own life story is evidence of this, and producing this volume of teachings was clearly a labor of love (lots of labor) for those involved; they understood the value of these teachings. I'm deeply grateful to them, Deshung Rinpoche, the mahasiddha Virupa, and the Sakya School. I really love this book.
In short: this is a teaching to draw close to your heart and stick with for the long haul (the book bears multiple readings), if your aim to be of real help to the beings of the world. This book can orient you in the direction of that aim.
May those who seek, find!
This is a desert island Dharma-book.......2004-01-04
Having read many Lam-Rim Graduated Path texts from the Gelug-pa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, it was a joy to read this approach from the late Deshung Rinpoche (but later reincarnated - may I have the karma to meet him!), a master and shining light of the Sakya tradition.
This, like all Graduated Path texts, is a journey through the Buddhist path, right from the recognition of our life as having its basis in suffering, to the discovery of our own enlightened heart/mind, Buddha Nature.
It would be difficult to read this book and not have a strong sense that life has a lot more meaning than that reflected by our modern society, which is a model of the path and result of the 5 defilements in many of its manifestations.
A manual that should be a cornerstone of any decent Dharma-library. May countless beings be benefited by these profound, expansive and beautifully written teachings!
A comprehensive view of life, death and enlightenment.......1998-08-10
I have read many spiritual books in my lifetime. This is the most comprehensive explanation of life, its purpose, karma and how to attain enlightenment I have ever seen. Not light reading, this book not only provides detailed information on meditation, worldly existence, suffering, the rarity of human birth, and the law of karma, but provides powerful meditations and spiritual practices to help us increase our capacity for love and compassion and to improve our ability to concentrate free from thoughts, so as to attain insights and ultimately enlightenment.
