Customer Reviews:
Mostly General Info & Very Weak on Central American Ports.......2004-01-04
.
I purchased this book because the other books on the Caribbean did not include all the ports I'll be visiting on my March 2004 cruise. I looked at Fodor's, Frommer's, Lonely Planet, etc. I wanted to buy a book that contained all the ports for the Western Caribbean, and this book advertised just that. I was looking forward to the information that this book would provide.
This book has 3 parts:
* Cruising and the Caribbean (18 pages)
* Caribbean Cruise Lines & their Ships (16 pages)
* Ports of Call (177 pages)
Regarding the Ports of Call section... Here is what you get:
* The Bahamas (35 pages)
* Key West (20 pages)
* Jamaica (34 pages)
* The Cayman Islands (17 pages)
* The Mexican Caribbean (36 pages)
* Central America (23 pages)
My cruise is going to Grand Cayman, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Cozumel. I read the first 2 parts of the book along with the chapters in Ports of Call that dealt with the ports I will be visiting.
Most of the Ports of Call chapters do a good job of evaluating the port and country. Topics covered in each port/country are
* at a glance (summary about the country),
* brief history,
* fast facts (country facts),
* budget planning (weak),
* a list of the author's favorite attractions (but we aren't told why they are "favorites"),
* popular shore excursions offered by most cruise lines, and
* exploring on your own (driving, shopping, dining, sports, entertainment, nightlife).
The Central America chapter was very weak and this was very disappointing to me, since 3 of the 5 ports I will be visiting are in Central America. The Central America chapter deals with Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama (all of those countries in just 23 pages...that's less than 4 pages per country). The author should have devoted as much time to Central America as she did to the Bahamas, Key West, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and Mexican ports. As an example...the Panama pages are primarily a history lesson on the Panama Canal; only a few paragraphs mention shore excursions. The author should have devoted one chapter to each Central American country.
The author does not attempt to rate or evaluate the shore excursions. She merely describes them (much like a cruise line's brochure or website). This was also disappointing to me.
The book was helpful in confirming the research that I had already done on the Internet (and that info is free to everyone...unlike this book).
Honestly, I can't recommend this book. I do recommend that you use the Internet to do your research as well as the cruise line's website. You can find a lot of helpful cruise info and reviews at this website: http://www.cruisecritic.com/ You can obtain valuable research info from many other websites as well...just take your time to do your research (and then you can write a better book than this one).

Book Description
How have the legal careers of twenty-five American presidents shaped their presidencies?
Of America's forty-three presidents, twenty-five have been lawyers.
America's most beloved and admired president, Abraham Lincoln, was involved in more than 5,100 cases during his 25-year legal career. John Adams, the first lawyer-president, combined a twenty-year law practice with significant contributions to our nation's founding charters. His son, John Quincy Adams, argued landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases both before and after his presidency. He was one of eight lawyer-presidents to appear as counsel before the highest court in the land. Rutherford Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, and other lawyer-presidents gained fame handling sensational murder trials and equally high profile cases.
These are but a few of the fascinating stories about the legal careers of America's lawyer-presidents. Yet, these stories have largely been untold--until now. America's Lawyer-Presidents sheds light on the legal backgrounds of each of these chief executives and how their experiences as lawyers impacted and shaped their presidencies. Written by historians and presidential scholars and featuring an engaging and image-rich presentation, America's Lawyer-Presidents provides new insights into our national leaders and their lives and times, from colonial days to the present.

One of many . . . .......2005-10-03
We don't know how many there are each year ... people who walk away from society and disappear into the bush. They all have their reasons. We never hear about most of these folks. Their futures are unknown. We only learn about the extraordinary ones whose stories later emerge in the news and intrigue us for years afterwards. If you liked reading about Michael Oros' life in the bush, You'd probably also like these other books: 1) "Notes From The Century Before" by Edward Hoagland (a detailed report on the area where Oros lived, written a few years BEFORE he arrived there; 2) "The Secret Life of Ted Kaczynski" by Chris Waits & Harold Shors (details of his 24 years in the Montana backwoods, written by someone who knew him well during all those years); 3) "The Ridgerunner" by Richard Ripley (the story of the fabled "human coyote", a loner who roamed the forests and mountains of northern Idaho for many years; 4) "Cache Lake Country" by John J. Rowlands (first-person account of his life in the Great North Woods, full of info on woodcraft and nature). Someone else has already mentioned "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer, which is an absolute "must read" book. There's also a different but somehow appealing book called "Within this Wilderness" by Feenie Ziner, which I enjoyed enough to read a couple of times. It's an account of communal life during the early 1970s on an island in the Inside Passage between Vancouver and mainland BC.
Couldn't put it down........2004-01-20
This book is very interesting and I just couldn't put it down. I recomend it to everyone.
Interesting Look Into The Mind Of Sheslay Free Mike..........2002-03-27
I found the book at a local used bookstore and was drawn to it immediately. I am interested in wilderness survival and the fact that Michael Oros was able to survive in the wild for that length of time was reason enough for me to check this book out. I greatly enjoyed the personal look inside Oros' mind that his diary entries afforded. I could relate to alot of what Oros was feeling and it was unfortunate that his hopefull idealism had to come to such a tragic end. It gives alot of insight into the alienation that Oros and alot of people today are feeling when it comes to modern society. The author did a very good job putting it all together into this story.
Definitely a good read.
Great book!.......1999-06-15
This book is great. I recommend it to anybody who likes the outdoors, hunters, fisherman, etc. It's a good true story.
A true story of an insane man loose in Brittish Columbia.......1998-12-27
If you have read Jon Krakauers "Into The Wild" you should read this book. It is the true account of a mad man who lived alone in the wilderness of B.C. and his eventual demise.

Usually they just sleep, eat, and chase crumpled wads of paper around like they're possessed, but when your kitty starts vomiting or biting her skin till she bleeds, it's helpful to get some answers. Amy Shojai, a veterinary technician for 20 years, has compiled an encyclopedia that provides A-to-Z guidance to cat care and cat behavior. From Abscess to Zoonosis, Shojai discusses diseases and abnormal conditions as well as perfectly healthy behaviors like play-fighting, kneading, and the Flehman reaction. Shojai explains cat-grooming needs, provides information on the neutering process, describes why cats navigate so well, and explores the situations likely to cause your cat stress, the symptoms associated with stress, and how best to address said stress, once you've identified it. There's also a useful appendix introducing cat breeds and associations, and another appendix of symptoms with their associated diseases and conditions, so you can read up on the physical and character traits of the Abyssinian, Bengal, and Maine Coon, or determine that coughing could be a sign of heartworms, lungworms, or pneumonia. With extra pages listing animal welfare foundations, pet services, and veterinary resources, plus 41 color photographs illustrating popular cat breeds, Shojai's encyclopedia is accurate, easy to use, and a great resource on all things feline. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
This Book is a Great Buy!.......2000-01-29
We have several little cat friends around the home and this is a great "general reference" on cat care. It is easy to read and well indexed with loads of information on what to do to keep your cat happy and healthy. For "cat first aid and emergency care", however, I would recommend an additional book sold on Amazon, "Help! The Quick Guide to First Aid for Your Cat." By Michelle Bamberger (DVM). She really outlines, with excellent drawings, what to do in a life or death emergency situation with your cat. With both of these books, from Amazon, you'll have an excellent library on cat health and emergency care.
Help at your fingertips.......1999-05-08
Responsible cat owners know that understanding and caring are essential to owning a healthy, happy animal. The Purina Encyclopedia of Cat Care is a reference book featuring information about behavior, care, breed characterists and health concerns. The book fetures an A to Z format making information easily accessible with a detailed index.

Award-Winning Book!.......1999-01-17
The Purina Encyclopedia of Cat Care won the 1998 Muse Medallion from the Cat Writers Association for being "Best Care & Health Cat Book of the Year."
Best cat book I own! And I own a lot of 'em!.......1999-01-15
I want to go to University and become a vet, but until then I am using this excellent book as a guide! So far it's helped me to save my kitten from LUTD (Lower Urinary Tract Disease) which can be fatal if not caught. The pictures and sympton charts are absolutely phenominal, I don't know what I would do without this book. I've learned so much, I consider this book my cat Bible! If you have a cat or are interested in animal care, you must have this book.

Complete idiot's guid to beading.......2007-07-15
I thought this book was very good at informing customers who have never had any experience in Jewerly making. It does give great steps to all the lingo and explains all the items you would need to start. Then go onto exlplaining more projects you will be able to do. I am very gald I bought this book
THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO BEADING, ILLUSTRATED.......2007-05-07
FLAWLESS TRANSACTION WITH A PLATINUM SELLER WHOM I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND; THANKS SO MUCH!
This book was very disappointing........2006-01-25
As a beginning to intermediate beader, this book was a disappointment to me. I guess I should have taken the title more seriously! The projects lack inspiration and the photographs are of poor quality. Many of the pictures are repetitive. I also felt that the book is not organized in a logical fashion and, although it covers wirework, it does not even mention wrapping a donut or a pendant or a basic rosary turn. If you are looking for a really good basic book on beading or you want to find some fresh new projects, this book is not for you!
No pictures for critical steps.......2006-01-03
I purchased this book to learn HOW TO ATTACH CLASPS. Well, there are NO PICTURES to go along with the step by step instructions. I am a total NOVICE at this, and with all the great reviews I figured this would be the ONE BOOK to get ... no. I still have no idea how to modify a necklace on a leather cord to attach a clasp. If anyone can offer any help, I would appreciate it. But I would not buy this book if you don't know how to attach clasps.
Great source of beadwork and info; but not very inspirational!.......2005-09-29
While the title of this book is rather offensive, it must be admitted that the text inside provides a thorough introduction to all types of beadwork.
Chapters cover the history of beads, what beads are made of, making your own beads, and all about findings. Next we learn basic jewelry design, stringing and weaving, tools and materials, and knotting methods. Off-loom bead weaving is next, followed by right-angle weave, brick- and ladder-stitch, beading on a loom, a brief chapter on wirework, fabric beading, and much more.
You'll also find a few not-so-great color photos of the projects. But I find the book useful nonetheless, for it covers a vast amount of beadwork territory in well-written instructional text that is nicely augmented by line-art diagrams.
-Sharilyn Miller, author of Bead on a Wire

Customer Reviews:
what IS it going to be like to have an infant move in with you?.......2006-08-20
Dr. Brazelton tells you. Really.
the genius of this book is that he categorizes
the active baby
the average baby
the quiet baby
He Knows! Depending on your baby's temperament, they are Very Different Experiences during that first year...
i read this when i was first pregnant and it ushered me into a sense of what it would really be like to be responsible for a baby, and not just babySITTING!
then i read the chapter on each month as my daughter grew...
i'm sure i appreciated the wonder of what was unfolding before my eyes every day more than i might have if i'd gotten lost in the neverending feeding, changing diapers chore part over and over again...
it was a Great Gift - and boon to my own confidence as a new mom - that year.
also, somehow between the lines, Dr. Brazelton gets the message across that You Can't Do It Wrong... you are that baby's mother and so by definition, you're doing it right...
there's a new pediatrician who has a book about how to get an infant to stop crying - something like the Happiest Baby on The Block...
that - and this book - are my two favorite essentials.
Outdated in the extreme........2004-02-01
Full of outdated advice such as putting baby to sleep on his stomach, scheduling feedings and leaving a newborn to "cry it out." Also focuses on the worst experiences of new mothers. It's important for struggling new mothers to know that they are not alone in their doubts, fears and resentments, but I found it very disheartening to read about these mothers (and fathers) who fantasize about escaping the demands of motherhood by "accidentally" dropping or drowning the baby and who resent, dislike and ignore (that is, neglect) their newborns. I recommend either The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two / by William and Martha Sears or Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 / by American Academy Of Pediatrics instead.
Learning the normal range of baby behavior.......2001-04-19
My children are 9 & 6 now. I was extremely grateful to have this book when my first was born. I had very little experience with children beyond teenage babysitting and a degree in psychology (not as useful as one might think, though it sounds impressive.) It was great to know just how extreme the differences can be between perfectly normal babies.
Somewhat helpful, VERY out-of-date.......2000-10-24
Although the descriptions of different babies' development & temperment were somewhat interesting, this book is completely out-of-date. The photos and some of the advice was so old-fashioned (i.e. letting babies sleep on their stomachs, feeding healthy babies "sugar water" to delay feedings) that it was distracting. This book needs a major overhaul to make it worth the $17 pricetag. I returned it.
The best one.......2000-05-20
I bought this book years ago when my children were born. Five children and twenty five years later, it is my favorite baby gift especially for a first time mother.
The book describes three different infants and their temperments so clearly that no matter what kind of a baby you have, you will find your child somewhere in the book. For a first time mother, when variations of childrens sleeping, eating, and temperments are so different, it is reassuring to know that the one in your crib is as healthy and normal as the rest.

Infants and Mothers--Differences in Development.......2004-09-14
Harvard professor, T. Berry Brazleton, shares a lot of insight into infant development in a way to help parents understand their own babies. This book covers the first twelve months of the infant's life. He categorizes babies into the quiet baby, the active baby and the average baby.

Book Description
texts by Jennifer Gough-Cooper and Jacques Caumont
As the century draws to a close, it becomes increasingly clear how profoundly Marcel Duchamp influenced the trajectory of modem art. This remarkable book with its more than 1,300 illustrations covers 70 years of Duchamp's artistic production and traces his elusive personae across that same span. It documents his extraordinary achievements in painting and sculpture as well as his life-long involvement with chess, film, theater, and people - from intimate encounters to artistic liaisons.
Marcel Duchamp is designed as a double-faced publication: from one direction, entitled Works, it contains a catalogue reproducing Duchamp's paintings, sculptures, and miscellaneous objects (150 illustrated in color). From the other direction, entitled Ephémérides, unfolds a day-by-day account of the artist's life, organized by astrological sign. The greater part of this detailed chronology relies upon unpublished materials. It is enriched by 1,200 documents and photographs, including a number of works by Duchamp that have never before been reproduced. Each section is printed on a different color paper.
Sandwiched between these two sections is a concordance listing writings by and about Duchamp, a bibleography (letters sent by Duchamp), exhibition catalogues, a chronology of chess games, and a filmography.
Pontus Hulten, Director of the Palazzo Grassi in Venice between 1985 and 1989, is the chief curator of the Duchamp exhibition in Venice. Jennifer Gough-Cooper and Jacques Caumont are Duchamp scholars who have devoted themselves exclusively to Duchamp studies for the past fifteen years.

Book Description
This new and revised edition of William Beveridge remains the only documented biography of the most influential social reformer of the twentieth century. In Britain and Europe the Beveridge Plan of 1942 is still widely regarded as the seminal document of the modern `welfare state'. Yet if Beveridge was the `father of the welfare state' he was also, as this study shows, one of its earliest and most severe critics. Jose Harris explores Beveridge's life - the young social worker at Toynbee Hall; the `New Liberal' reformer in Edwardian Whitehall; the stormy director of the London School of Economics; and the `People's William' of the reconstruction movement after the Second World War. She combines biography with social and intellectual history, revealing many of the underlying principles and contradictions of social policy at different periods of the twentieth century. This new edition draws upon extensive new archive material to expand Harris's account of the origins and the aftermath of the Beveridge Plan. It also explores much more fully than was possible in the first edition the tortuous history of Beveridge's personal and emotional life, and its role in shaping his ideas and public career.
