This is the definitive work on Pacific States Flora, top notch illustrations, well origanized in 4 volumes, clear precise descriptions, no serious library can be complete without this exaustive work.

Abrams on Pacific States Flora.......2000-03-29

This massive 4 volume set was created from 1923 through 1960. It is well laid out listing the species under each family classification. The species are then listed in an "outline" format. The plants are listed by their scientific names with the common names also shown. Abrams is often quite specific in listing localities for finding many of the rarer plants.

One of its strong points is the many fine line drawings which accompany most of the descriptions. The volumes are well bound and finely printed. The cost is not excessive, as the quality is excellent. (In reference the the 4 volume Stanford University publication).

The primary flaw with this work is it is a bit dated. Several new classifications have emerged since Abram's day, and a newer work should supplement this work. An example is the classification of Lilium Vollermi, which is now considered to be a sub-species of Lilium Pardalinum. (Though the whorled leaves of L. Vollermi gives it a nice distinction!).

Still this work is a vast and useful resource, an essential tool for the professional field botanist.

Review of a review from an Innocent ex-TX Death Row Inmate.......2003-07-17

I read the review by the jealous, disgruntled current Texas Death Row inmate. There are no computers on death row. I question the lacky and co-conspirator working on his behalf. I knew Leslie Gosch while I was an innocent member of death row. Though I cannot speak of his innocence or guilt, what I can say is that Leslie never bothered anyone. I cannot fathom what he did to evoke such hatred and jealously from one of his peers. This is a good book into the horrors of the worst death row in America. Ignore the vindictive ramblings of this death row inmate who needs to remove the mote from his own eye before castigating another. Great job, Ms. Elder.

Makes a political statement ... strongly.......2003-05-31

This is a moving book. It makes a strong case against the death penalty and will force you to carefully evaluate your own stance on the issue. After an executed man was found innocent, a group came together in Britain to begin corresponding with death row inmates. Joy saw the television show about this innocent man and joined Human Writes. She began corresponding with Lesly Gosch.

This book uses the author's words and excerpts of correspondence from Lesly to tell the story of life on death row and one man's journey to self-acceptance before execution.

Although it does drag a bit at times, always in Lesley's correspondence, overall it is an interesting book. It is powerfully moving and the author does an exceptional job of presenting her position convincingly.

Review by a Texas Death Row inmate.......2002-04-30

Lethal Justice is an interesting,if slightly unbelievable,work of fiction. The "facts"have been poorly researched and the story itself is a hodge-podge of lies,half-truths and daydreams that were related to the rather naive author by the subject of the book.
I'm also a prisoner on Texas' Death Row and I knew Leslie Gosch for almost ten years before he was executed. His "life",his profound ideas and mystical insights,were his, only for the length of time it took him to transcribe them from whichever book he was reading to the letter he was writing - whether it was his "expertise" on flute-making and his knowledge of music,or his account of watching for hours while a sunflower blossomed when he was barely out of diapers. His "life",as told by Joy Elder,never happened.
However,as a glimpse into the twisted mind of a little man who dreamed impossible dreams of being respected and looked up to as a wise and humble,generous and compassionate human being,it is interesting and maybe even worth a reading. You should keep a box of salt close to hand, though.

Less than perfect book for an intermediate to advanced rider.......2003-01-27

This book would be great for someone just starting out riding, and having "issues" that need solving. The book is packed with pictures and accompanying descriptions. It covers basic flat work and jumping. A wide variety of rider error is covered in this book, and might be useful for an instructor as a schooling guide.

This book does not cover more detailed dressage moves, or more complicated manoevers like multiple jumps. If you are looking for a solution to fix a horse that is counter-flexing or rushing fences on a course, this is not the book for you. It's a good book, but not as useful for an experienced rider.

Now I Know why I have Difficulty With............2002-07-21

I was born saying "horse" & among diverse interests, a Graduate of the former Riding Acadamy that Susan Harris was director of as an Instructor in "Balance Seat" I am also a nurse in Family Practice & both student & practioner of several "alternative medicine modialities" in accupressure,trigger point release, Theraputic Touch . As I began to see different body types of people coming as patients in our office & to me I noticed a pattern of other problems that would show elsewhere from where an initial injury would occur;known as compensatory injuries & as a believer in form to function in all creatures I found myself being able to instruct a patient of what my also result from the injury & prevention. This book takes this concept onto the horse & clearly explains why some riders find ease & difficulty w/ aspects of riding . I also gives Instructor & rider insight into how to cope w/ rider's conformation & honest expectations of how much physical challanges & capabilities for different body types to riding disiplines . How you can ride better - depending on your figure.......2001-10-31

I like the back views of riders - some tall, some short, some fat, some thin - these are used to give you suggestions on how you can improve your riding. So don't worry if you don't look like an Olympic champion with perfect legs!

The book has many photographs (some in color) that show typical riding faults and how to correct them.

There are some really good suggestions for off-the-horse exercises. This book is ideal for adults getting back into English(as opposed to Western) riding - especially if you rode when you were so small that the only way to grip was with your knees (not the way to ride!). It covers really basic information - like how to find an instructor and a riding school. It covers walking, trotting, cantering and jumping. There is a very informative chapter for the nervous rider.

I keep going back to this book before and after each lesson. Its a good basic book but will only be useful to those who practise what it preaches.

A well written, helpful book........1999-12-07

This is a great book with beautiful color pictures throughout. It is helpful especially for adults, but good for anyone who is involved in riding. It is nice to know the problems we face are commonplace for many other people, and the author gently shows us how to correct them. Great information about human and equine bodies as well. Lots of helpful advice, and did I mention beautiful pictures?

A great addition to anyone's riding library.......1998-07-04

As a rider who took up the sport at 33-and who sometimes feels overwhelmed with all there is to know and master in riding, I was delighted with this book. The british authors have a wonderfully down-to-earth approach, and there is no sense of the "elitism" one sometimes finds in american riding books. Great discussions of common problems, and very helpful solutions offered. I think it should be in every adult beginner's library.

Although this is a well produced book with lots of lovely pictures, the instructions are lacking for a beginner such as myself. Superfically flicking through the book it looks great, it's only when you sit down and need to do something that you find that this book doesn't equip you with enough explanation of the terms and skills needed to allow you to complete a simple sewing task.

It promises much, but it lacks thorough, simple and clear explanations and a beginner will still need other resources to learn how to sew basic things.

I don't know who this book is targeted at, as it isn't for the beginner, yet the concepts it covers really are basic and I doubt experienced sewers would get much out of this book for this reason.

I guess it's not a bad book, just so-so. I tried to edit this to make it a 3 star, rather than the 2 I initially gave it, as that seemed fairer, but I can't edit the 'stars.' I just wouldn't recommend it for a beginner looking for a how-to reference.

Excellent reference book.......2007-02-15

So far this book has been a good reference for me. Very good pictures and descriptions. I haven't gone through it completely yet. Wouldrecommend it for people that know how to sew.

"The book starts off assuming you know how to read and cut patterns, piece together parts, and construct clothing." I just wanted to say that the book does explain how to read and interpret patterns. In fact there are about 8 really good pages dedicated to reading patterns. I really hated how every pattern I bought wouldn't give an explanation of all the symbols they used. I didn't understand the symbols and some of the steps used in patterns until I got this book.
However the previous reveiwer was right about the book not explaining how to use a sewing machine, so I woudln't recommend getting this book if that's what you're after. If you've played with your sewing machine a bit and have figured out how to reasonably use it, then go for it.

Reasons to get the book:
-Great detailed images to follow
-shows how to properly fit a pattern and ways to fix common fitting problems
-index of stitches and how they're used
-has examples of how to sew specific garments
-explains how to execute common construction pieces like placket pockets and lapped zippers

Cons:
-like previous reviewer said it did not give an overview of how to use a sewing machine (pretty bad for a "complete guide")

Great book about the waldorf educational system.......2005-10-23

This is a great overview of the Waldorf education. It takes you thru the guiding philosophies, traditions and what the children do throughout the years of school. You will fall in love with the Waldorf approach to educating children.
I read it while researching various educational systems for my child and set up a schhol visit as soon as I was finished with the book.

Serves as a warning!.......2004-01-31

This book does a fair job of conveying the Waldorf philosophy. It provided a useful forearming prior to the Waldorf School indoctrination pitch that I endured when seriously (a brief moment of insanity) considering Waldorf for our daughter. Having read the book, I was far better prepared to challenge the director's delusional utopian drivel on numerous levels. I think anyone who is considering Waldorf as an "education" option for their children SHOULD read this and read it carefully, but consider all the while how unequipped for the REALITY of life this approach will leave them. Read and be warned.

At last! An accessible description........2003-02-27

I've been a Waldorf parent for 4 years and have been pleased with the education and life experience my kids are getting at school. But I haven't been able to describe to people who ask about the Waldorf school what makes it so different, so special. I've found most of Rudolf Steiner's (Waldorf education's original mastermind) work to be impenetrable; probably due to weak translations, but still. I've read a lot of dense stuff in my day, but Steiner's is unsloggable. This book by Jack Petrash, however, I loved. It's written so 21st century mortals can understand it and relate to it. Right from the first chapter, I understood it and felt it understood me. In the second chapter I thought, "Oh, now he's really captured it. He should have put this chapter first." I thought that again about the third, fourth, and fifth chapters and then decided he probably had the order okay in the first place.

Excellent Overview of Waldorf Education.......2002-08-23

I've never read a book that explains the Waldorf Education philosophy in such a captivating way as this book! It is so enjoyable to read. The author uses interesting anecdotes from real-life situations to explain his ideas. The entire book is excellent, but the chapters on the three stages of childhood (preschool, grade school and high school) are so well suited to all parents that I wouldn't limit this book to only those that adhere to Waldorf principles. The author has been a teacher for over 30 years, much of that time at the Washington Waldorf School where he has taken three classes of children from grade one to grade eight. And if this book is any indication, he knows his stuff!

What's a genius anyway?.......2001-02-09

John Berger is a critic with a real sense of decency: never too high-falutin, smart and responsible. He asks us to see beautiful objects, not in their staid isolation in the museum setting, but in the context of social history. It is obvious that Picasso was a genius. He saw and drew things that evoke wonders and passions. But is that all?

The central essay here is "The Moment of Cubism." Berger paints a general portrait of a distinct era of possibility: artistic and social and political. The explosion of Cubism is but a moment in a larger moment of real revolution. Not just "ways of seeing" but ways of living, thinking, hoping. Berger reminds us that Picasso needed the times (Europe), he also, more specifically needed friends and support. After all, there were two who brought forth cubism; moreover, there were the likes of Cezanne.

Berger asks the question that is overlooked in the constant reverence of Picasso's potency (echoing Benjamin Buchloh on the "ciphers of regression"): was Picasso genius throughout his career or was that moment (historical and aesthetic) the real genius?
