                      Book Description

Imagine New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and the six New England states. Texas is bigger than all of them put together. Texas is bigger than all of them put together. In the minds of most Americans, Texas is the nation's biggest state. And that is despite the fact that Alaska is geographically larger, and that California and New York have larger populations. It's no coincidence that just about every town has a business with the word "Big" in it. In Texas, with its grand history, larger than life characters, and booming prosperity, big's not swagger or exaggeration, it's just plain fact.
But as photographer Carol M. Highsmith and writer Ted Landphair show clearly Texas: A Photographic Tour, the Lone Star State is more than just oil boomtowns, cattle, and cowboys. The authors guide the reader on a journey of discovery to such natural wonders as the hard-to-get-to, but spectacular, Big Bent National Park and the Monahans Sandhills State Park, with its famous dune field. The museums and exhibits encountered range from the fascinating Dr Pepper Museum in Waco to the Devil's Rope Museum—recounting the history of barbed wire—in McLean to the infamous Texas School Book Depository in Dallas. Among Texas's colorful historic sites are the Alamo in San Antonio and Ysleta in El Paso, the state's oldest mission. Texas is also home to the world's biggest honky tonk, Billy Bob's in Fort Worth, and the "Live Music Capital of the World," as Austin, the state capital, is otherwise known.
These and many other interesting places and people await the reader. With its striking photos and insightful text, Texas: A Photographic Tour fully captures the energy, history, and fun of this vibrant state. It makes an excellent gift for anyone who has visited or wants to visit this grand state.

                      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book.......2000-12-19

What an amazing book for the price: incredible photography, solid and helpful captions, some fascinating old black-and-white photos, even a full-page oil painting of my favorite Texas scene: bluebonnets in Hill Country in the spring. This inexpensive book is a high-quality effort and very well researched. Everybody knows Texas is a vast place. But most books dwell on the cowboy scenes. In this one, Carol Highsmith and Ted Landphair catch the best of every part of the state. On one page, there might be a fabulous sunrise (or is it sunset?) shot of a windmill on the prairie, then a shot of Billy Bob's honky-tonk in Fort Worth, then a stunning city skyline shot of Dallas or Houston. Even the Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco is in this book. This is a tour, all right, at a great price. A keepsake book for sure. I gave so many away as gifts, I almost forgot to keep one for myself.

                                  Book Description

Not since World War II has Japan faced a crisis like the one before it now. An apparently endless recession has weakened the foundations of the traditional family and severed the bond between Japan's corporations and employees. Unruly children turn classrooms into battlefields. Ultranationalist pride and xenophobia are celebrated in best-selling comic books and championed by media superstars, including the governor of Tokyo. Upheavals across the society have significant ramifications for America. As the Japanese reject their traditions wholesale, they view their half-century-old connection to the United States with mounting skepticism. Drawing on his fluent Japanese and unmatched intimacy with the culture, John Nathan reveals a nation newly unmoored from the traditions that have shored it up and sometimes stifled it. Dramatic changes in business are augured by Carlos Ghosn, the Brazilian president of Nissan, once scorned as an outsider, now hailed for reviving a moribund giant. The soft-spoken artist Yoshinori Kobayashi foments and reflects rabid nationalism among millions with his hugely popular comic books. Yasuo Tanaka, a puckish writer and bon vivant, wins the governorship of Nagano and revolutionizes Japanese politics with his radical populism. Nathan delves beyond Japan's celebrities to map the epic shifts in daily life. He unveils the horrors of the Japanese school system. He goes inside a "career transition service" to witness the novel, nuanced rituals of job-hunting Japanese-style. He takes the pulse of ordinary citizens who are caught up in the country's many profound social shifts: agitprop pop culture, emerging feminism, environmentalism, teenage consumerism, entrepreneurship, and more. With immediacy and lan, John Nathan dispels conventional wisdom about Japan and replaces it with a brilliant vision of a country roiling with pride, uncertainty, creativity, fear, and hope.

4 out of 5 stars A Japanese Version of Civilization and Its Discontents .......2007-08-05

I have met many visitors to Japan who are extremely impressed with the hospitality and the politeness of the people. The society itself is also a highly advanced technologically and its people enjoy a high standard living that most enjoy. However, what Nathan does is that he takes his readers to a troubled Japan that is seldom seen by the outsiders. Nathan does his best to present the reasons why Japan is in the state it is in. Although it has one of the world's strongest economies, there is a sense of despair that many Japanese feel despite its modernity.

As Nathan points out, it is a country that is still seeking to define itself in many ways, and this is clearly seen among the young adults in Japan. I believe that Nathan's views Japan's societal problems mostly stemming from a spiritual void (although he does not use this term). This void exists in Japan largely due to its defeat of the Pacific War and the Emperor renouncing his claims of deity. Nationally, during the Pacific War, the Emperor was the rallying cause for the country and there has been no cause to arise from that time.

The generation that grew up after the war had a clear goal in mind which was to rebuild the country. Now that the country has been rebuilt, there appears to be no national cause to give oneself. The pursuit of most Japanese is individual prosperity and its people have adopted a materialistic philosophy that has not adequately filled that void. This is displayed in the lives of many broken families, absentee fathers, and a growing number of purposeless young people that Nathan documents in this book. Despite this though there are a few individuals in various stratas that are seeking to influence the future direction of Japan.

Although many of the examples that Nathan provides are extreme, such problems and people are commonly known in Japan. It was a very perceptive and informative read, about a country that is still attempting to redefine itself amongst its own people and in the modern world at large.

3 out of 5 stars A Good First Look at Changes in Japan's past 60 Years.......2006-11-11

The book provides a first look at changes in Japan's past 60 years, focusing on the situation of the country's soul at the end of 2002. Personally, I think the author was a bit negative about the future prospects of Japan, emphasazing the problems of families and education. Even if things are changing in Japan, the country, on my view, is still the most accountable in the World. For people who wants to understand the country and how it became what it is now, the book is a good start, providing a solid beggining from which further reading should follow.

5 out of 5 stars Japan In Transition - Again........2006-07-16

Japan's history and culture is deeply rooted in its 1400 years of interaction and trade with its Asian neighbors, and especially with China during after the Tang dynasty of 618 to 907. This Asian orientation was the basis and has strongly influenced the development of Japan and contributed to the Japanese "identity". This Asian orientation continued until 1853 when Japan embraced both its past and while simultaneously embarked on a new path to absorb and adopted western or modern technology and culture during the so called Meiji period named after the emperor of that period. This continued until 1945 when its empire crumbled in war. With a fresh start but with its industrial infrastructure and with many government agencies and educational system still somewhat in tact after the war, it entered the second phase of its modern development becoming the world's leading financial power and creditor nation by the late 1980's. But after this financial run up the economy stalled, stocks and real estate prices fell sharply, and Japan entered a decade and half long period of economic stagnation and adjustment.

That brings us to this new 250 page book. The author is a Japanese speaking Harvard educated American scholar with four decades of Japanese experience. He has lived in Japan for many years and is eminently qualified to write the book. The book is short and uses a combination of interviews, personal observations, and references to Japanese writings to provide a sense of a country in transition.

He discusses the issue of the "unique" cultural identity, the politics, youth violence, the modern Japanese corporation in a state of flux, the family, and a number of other subjects. It is clear from the book that Japan is in the midst of another change or renewal. The people are turning again to nationalism, seeking pride in their country, and have a desire to re-establish Japan as a country respected by China and America but working more independently. In the background are lurking many social changes and a breakdown in the school systems, unemployment, changes in the family, and a dramatic increase in youth crime rates - all that are new for Japan that was previously a strongly structured and a more predictable society.

This is a well written book. It manages to be both educate and entertain with many stories, insights, and humor. It brings up to date on what is happening in Japan today in 2004.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, fast paced but slightly biased read.......2005-04-28

This book is really interesting in that it highlights some of the issues Japan is grappling with at present. I do feel that Nathan presents things in an idealistic way when it meets his own views - as with the example of the apple orchardists in central Nagano prefecture. They might seem more connected to him - but perhaps that is what he wanted to see? There are certainly disconnected families in Nagano, despite the appearance of tradition.
On the whole its interesting and good to see some discussion of Japan's internal issues.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to madern Japan.......2005-03-23

Though some of the facts aren't always correct, it does give a look into modern Japan. Very downbeat though. Short and sweet, if you are looking to detailed examination of Japan you may want to look elsewhere, but if you want an overview its great.

                                  Book Description

A detailed and meticulously researched biography of Amy Fisher and the story that made her famous.

Her parents called her the "light of their lives."

Her lover called her a liar and a whore.

Her classmates said she was "bubbly."

Her prostitution client said she was "shy."

Her prosecutor compared her to John Gotti.

Her victim called her "the devil."

The media called her the Long Island Lolita.

Her own lawyer called her "an...enigma."

How many faces does Eve have?

On May 19, 1992 Amy Fisher walked up the steps of her lover's front porch and-accidentally or otherwise-shot his wife in the face. What followed was the most public exposure of all of Amy's haunting secrets: a double life that included teenage prostitution, a shattering affair with a married man and hidden childhood sex abuse. The themes were all there: sex, prostitution, obsession, violence and scandal. Soon, Amy was America's most famous teenager: her alluring image graced the covers of tabloids daily. She was the subject of three television movies in one week and became fodder for books, comics, trading cards and documentaries.

However, behind the myth-making paraphernalia and sensationalistic tabloid headlines proclaiming her the "Long Island Lolita" lay the real story of Amy Fisher, an insecure only child who grew up craving attention-at any price.

In this compelling biography, Pier Dominguez chronicles Amy's early years and takes an intricately detailed look at the scandal, tracing her story right up to Amy's release from prison-and beyond. The book is much more than Amy's own story: this is an anatomy of a scandal, a richly detailed reconstruction of a cultural phenomenon and a gossipy tome on the media's obsession with the Fisher story.

After four years of research: combing through archives, reading transcripts, analyzing court files and conducting first-hand interviews with participants in the case, Dominguez strips away the myth created by the media, and reconstructs the life and times of a young woman whose scandalous life, and even more shocking case, created a new paradigm for the American media. Here is the whole truth: the story behind the myth and behind the media. This is the story of Amy Fisher.

This book was one of the most informative books i have read. It contained everything from day one, of the attack on mrs buttafuoco, to amys release from prison. Which all other books lack. My only problem or complaint with this book is the number of spelling errors in it. There are numerous problems in spelling, first or last letters left out of words. Most of the AM and PM times are backwards and make no sense. OTHER than that, its a pretty good book.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Shrake's Common Sense Ways.......2005-12-10

Having attended 2 of Richard's 5 day sessions, I can assure you that his methods are completely safe. They are logical insights into a horse's instincts and the way we react to them. His books and videos are easy to follow, step-by-step guides to training, not by extreme force but by gentle pressure. Amazingly his ways work and they do not involve expensive gear and hours of intense riding. I have seen him work wonders with horses of all breeds and experience. This book is worth checking into if you want simple, common sense day to day training.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Completely misleading..........2003-05-20

...and he says that anyone can do this in their own backyard. That thought scares me. I think this guy means well but some of what he does doesn't seem very resistance free at all. Tying the horses head to the girth doesn't seem to fall into the "gentle" category. I checked out his video and it was even scarier!! I worry about completely well meaning people who follow Richard's training methods!

I was very disappointed in this book by Richard Shrake. I have read his other articles in the free horse newspaper and they are very good and informative. In this book the only thing you get out of it is that you should breath on your horse. The entire book is about that.

                                                Book Description

In the saga of American art's coming-of-age, Robert Henri (1865-1929) and John Sloan (1871-1951) stand tall among those in the vanguard of the campaign. These two major American artists were kindred spirits who maintained a special friendship throughout their lives, from the moment they met in 1892 until Henri's death thirty-seven years later. This volume offers the first publication of the full correspondence between the two painters. These intimate letters capture the opinions, working habits, and various traumas of Henri and Sloan, thus casting a new light on their lives and art. Many of the letters are illustrated with previously unpublished examples--Henri's quickly sketched caricatures and Sloan's more carefully detailed and drawn compositions. Readers of these letters will also find passages that provide fresh perspectives on well-known paintings and published statements.

Robert Henri spearheaded the transition in American art from nineteenth-century academicism to twentieth-century self- expressionism, and John Sloan was an invaluable partner in this movement. As the leaders of the Ashcan School, Henri and Sloan proclaimed that all life was fit subject matter for the artist, and organized the landmark exhibition of The Eight--a group that included Maurice Prendergast and Arthur B. Davies--in 1908. These letters make mention of such individuals as William Glackens, George Luks, Everett Shinn, Ernest Lawson, Alexander Milne Calder, and Isadora Duncan, as well as others among the Henri-Sloan circle.

                                                        Book Description

Chinese intellectuals of the early twentieth century were attracted to realism primarily as a tool for social regeneration. Realism encouraged writers to adopt the stance of the independent cultural critic and drew into the compass of serious literature the disenfranchised "others" of Chinese society. As historical pressures forced new ideological commitments in the late twenties and thirties, however, writers grew suspicious both of the "individualism" implicit in the realist model and of the often superficial nature of the sympathies that their fiction evoked in the middle class. Anderson argues that realism must be defined negatively as a "discourse of limitations" and is of minimal utility in the Chinese search for political and cultural empowerment. He shows how hesitations about the realist model affect the fiction of four representative authors, Lu Xun, Ye Shaojun, Mao Dun, and Zhang Tianyi. He also considers the demise of critical realism in the face of a new collectivist understanding of Chinese reality.
