One more book for armchair climbers. It's a good book, but it's basically useless to the real weekend warriors. With the noted exception of Lynn Hill and 2 or 3 others, all the climbers in this book are offering routes that are way beyonb the ability of the average climber. Yes, they are professional climbers, and yes, they want to show off their greatest achievements; so if this book will make you dream, it won't make you want to get up and follow in their footsteps !

This Transcends the Climbing Category.......2001-08-29

50FC is a terrific book about climbing, but it really plays to a much broader audience. Its about climbing and specific ascents, but then climbing and ascents are really about a whole lot more. The book has absolutely killer photos, clear maps laying out the technical aspects of each ascent, portraits and profiles of the individual climbers, and very readable discussion about each particular climb and climber being profiled. The various chapters are each a separate world, laying out the geography of climbing and the broad differences between one face and another, as unique as the characters and personalities involved. The author is a climber who took a number of the photos himself, so this is told from the POV of someone who knows what climbing is about, but not in a condescending way (no pun). Kroese writes clearly, so that anyone can get excited about what's happening up above. I have never climbed, which is what makes 50FC even more intriguing. Its about 50 distinct challenges, and the different ways people plan and conquer those challenges. The methods and process draw a good parallel to any sport, or even business. An inspiring view of high-altitude acheivement. A great book to give someone as a gift. But keep a copy for yourself.

After reading this book several times, my enthusiasm for it just continues to grow. This book is one of the most monumental assets to mountaineering since "The White Spider, The Story of the North Face of the Eiger." It raises the bar on climbing levels and performance to such heights that even experienced mountain climbers will get shivers reading some of the stories. It exposes a cross section of the best climbers in Amercia while telling stories of their favorite ascents. Anyone who enjoys mountaineering books or adventure books will consider this a asset to their library, and it is so readable that anyone who picks it up will have trouble putting it down. What a book! 5 Stars..

I just got my copy of Fifty Favorite Climbs in the mail. What a book! Much to the dislike of my family, I read it cover to cover over the weekend. After reading it, I am so inspired to climb and explore. The book profiles 50 elite climbers and describes their all time favorite mountain and rock climbs. The author does an exceptional job at capturing the personality of each climber, and then tells a wonderful story that explains why the climb is such a favorite.

The book is also BEAUTIFUL. It includes over 150 color photos, and not just shots taken by the author. Most are from renowned outdoor photographers. This is a unique book and a great gift idea for anyone with an interest in rock climbing and mountaineering.

Imagine the mountaineering marvel, "50 Classic Climbs" combined with intriguing biographies on 50 notable climbers of today, all tied together with compelling writing and outstanding photography. As one who has and dragged his camera all over Yosemite, the Cascades, Smith Rock, etc. since the 70's, I can tell you that the photography alone makes this book a must have.

Conservative.......2007-06-17

I bought this book expecting to find a fair and balanced view of the Presidency. What I got was a bunch of right wing nut jobs (Meese, Cheney, Bork, etc.) pontificating their conservative views. If you are not a right wing hack, then do not buy this book. It puts Ronald Reagan 6th all time! Absolutely absurd.

Excellent primer on the presidents; diverse ideological perspectives.......2007-05-23

Although this book is presented by the Wall Street Journal and the conservative Federalist Society, great pains are taken to include diverse (i.e. not just conservative) political perspectives, at least in the presidential rankings section. The essays, by and large, have a slight conservative bent, but so long as that is taken into account, the book can be an enjoyable, informative read for liberals and conservatives alike. Each president is profiled in about 3-5 pages; making this an excellent way to get acquainted with the 42 men who have held the office, and it prompted me to do some more investigation. Also included are a few essays about topics such as economic policy leadership, which I found to be particularly enjoyable. On a final note: I would like to see the ratings updated again. Republican/conservative scholars actually rated George W. Bush as the 7th best president in history at the time that the rankings were compiled. Bill Clinton's presidency looks better than 22nd in retrospect, as well.

A disappointing read.......2007-03-24

A strange schizophrenic book. There is not much to be learned about what made a president either great, or a failure from reading this book. Strangely, the 3-4 page vignettes written for each president by the "celebrity" authors spend little if any time explaining, or even listing the accomplishments and failures of their subject president. The book lists Jefferson as one of the "Great" presidents - yet read the vignette and you would think him one of the worst. This strange pattern extends across the descriptions of most of the presidents. The best part of the book is the appendix where the statistical results from surveys of academics from within the disciplines of Political Science, History and Law are presented. I left the plane at IAD and forgot the book in the seat pocket - with no regret at all! I would skip this one, or maybe you will get lucky and find one on the American flight between IAD and DFW, even then it may be a waste of your time.

It Rings True.......2007-02-16

Many Democrats will object to the ranking of the last two Democrat Presidents in this book, but the rankings were not done by a panel of Republicans, but by a mixed panel. Carter is ranked very low and Clinton only average; but George H. W. Bush was ALSO ranked only average. George W. was too new in the job to be included in this book; but Reagan received high marks, as even the Democrats now would concede he deserves. It took a decade but finally after his death Democrats have honored him with praise; some former USSR towns have erected statues of him for ending the Cold War. He also reduced a punishingly high top tax rate and did wonders for the economy which fueled the tech successes of the 1990s.

I viewed this book as fair. Even Clinton fans should be able to judge his two terms fairly and see that it was a period of "treading water" (perhaps when we should have been beefing up our military and taking seriously the growing international threats.) Many who are not his fans may say they were too generous to him and nothing substantial was achieved. The cult of personality will, perhaps, have to die out before certain people see him as he was.

As for George W. Bush, time will have to tell how he is judged. Certainly, at the moment, many would count him among the best for aggressively addressing what we see as a world-wide existential threat; and of course others don't see it his way and would judge him harshly. There is hardly a middle ground on this one. It will be awhile before this is settled.

The book is worth reading.

After reading more than 20 mob books, I have found this book to be the most exciting. This book gives the reader an inside look at that inner workings of Brooklyn's Columbo Family and its intriguing boss, Joe Columbo. The reader finds how this man evaded taxes and kept in power for as long as he did, and it also describes loansharking in vivid details. Mr. Cantalupo's memory and survival is a blessing for mafia readers. Organized crime in Brooklyn is stupendously covered with this book. Only one regret about this book and that is it lacks detail on the Gallo-Profaci war. The only other book that holds a candle to this is "Blood Oath" by George Fresolone. I highly recommend this title.

Wanna-be gangster wants to tell his story........1999-08-21

This is a typical example of a wanna-be gangster who testifies against his friends and associates and then goes out looking to sell his story to the highest bidder. The problem is, there is no story. He idolizes his alleged "gangster" mentor for the first few chapters and then, once he's gone, he systematically turns informant on all his associates to eradicate his gambling debts. Thank God they didn't try to make this into a movie.

Good start to the book but fizzles out quickly........1999-03-25

I'm always excited to read different stories about families you don't normally hear much about. There are a myriad of books about Gotti and Capone but this book gave an inside look into the Colombo family from a FRIEND, not a made guy. So the first few chapters are interesting, providing anecdotal info. on Colombo, Gallo, etc., then this "insider" turns stoolie because of his gambling debts. The majority of the book then describes him trying to rat out his friends. The reader is hard-pressed to feel sympathy for this self-serving individual. This book never delivers that "inside" edge because Cantalupo was never involved in anything more important than numbers running. Don't waste your time, especially if you have to search for the book.

I think it's hilarious that, in defending her father against Mr. Whitt's crticism of his poor grammar and spelling, Ms. Ross-Ryan uses words and grammar that are unrecognizable as English and do, indeed, make her father look like a literary genius. The apple really does not fall far from the tree.

Congratulations to author for speaking out.......2004-11-20

I found this book to be nothing short of a gripping and devestating account of the dilemma facing captive elephants and their keepers. Ryan writes out of highly personal convinction and candor. The result is an intimate and revealing memoir I found difficult to put down. This is not a comprehensive guide to elephant captivity or training methods and should not be purchased as such. Instead, it should be read as one man's experience and eventual confrontation with a sad and pervasive mentality surrounding treatment of captive animals. Ryan succeeds in making us (those of us with compassion for our fellow animals) frustrated, horrified and desperate to believe in an alternative to violent methods of keeping elephants.

My hearty congratulations to the author for his courage. Essential reading for policy makers, animal keepers and those frequenting zoos. There must be a better way!

A True Story About What Mistreated Elephants go through........2002-01-21

First off I would like to say to Mr. Mark Witt, that reveiw was very harsh considering all the hard labor my Father went through to write this book! He deserves a A (insted of a B!) I'm sure that if u were to write a book it would not be perfect either! Anyways i belive this book is the cold hard truth about what these animals go through. I would definatly recomend this to people that are intersted in this area.

Great Story barely overcomes high price and poor grammer.......2000-06-22

As an Animal Rights activist, I ordered this book with greatenthusiasm, thinking that I would get a lot of first hand informationabout how animals are trained and treated in the zoo and circus industries. My first impression of "Keepers of the Ark" was when I got the envelope in the mail and thought, "that's an awfully small book for ..[the price]." Especially for a paperback!

After reading the book I can honestly say that it was informative, enlightening, and even enjoyable. But I was also taken aback at how lousy the editing was! There were spelling errors, grammar errors, run on sentences, just like as if it was taken directly from someone's notebook with no editing what so ever. Considering that the author really lays into the management people above him while he worked in the WAP for not having any college degrees (while he did), it rings as being pretty hypocritical that the published work looks so bad from the grammar standpoint.

And the book really is too expensive for a 180+ page paperback.

The author gets B, and the publisher a D-.

I would suggest checking it out from the library instead of buying it.

This method of piecing was easy to understand and fun to do. I would consider getting the templates offered in the book. It made life a lot easier in the cutting of the pieces. My first quilt made from this book turned out really nice and I love the "circles" that each block forms.

the book is a good book althought i was a little disappointed becasue there were about 6 pages that didn't print good and the material printed half on one page and the rest on the other page. aside from that the book it's is very usefull.

This book educates women about important exercises during pregnancy and post partem that will give them a new perspective on how their bodies work. In fact, imparting the exercises throughout life from now on would benefit every woman immensely.

Worth the time to read.......2006-04-29

After reading some of the negative reviews, I felt compelled to write my own. In my first pregnancy, I did find the book hard to follow in some places (and yes it could be organized better), and I did not use it. Now in my second preganacy, and in hindsight I greatly regret not taking the time to actually read it and use it. I have searched for other books, and have found some that seem better organized, however, all of the other books seem based on MS Noble's but less complete, and do not really promote exercises which will not increase pelvic floor problems. This book is designed to protect the pelvic floor, and repair it (instead of surgery). So no, do not expect to break a sweat or find and intense work out (of which high body temp is bady for baby's brain anyway). If you are looking for something with a 5 second simple sound byte for instructions, this is not the book for you. Such as in life, some of the really good things require thorough explanantion and a bit of your time. Ms. Noble's book was one of the first like it, is still the base reference for most others, and will truly teach you how to protect your abdomen and pelvic floor safely. Unlike some other books, which have exercises that will actually increase abdominal recti seams. So, if after pregancny you do not want a saggy abdomen, a uterus hanging down, and not to pee when you sneeze- this is the book for you.

Essential Exercises For The Childbearing Year.......2006-02-07

I wish that I had found and read this book before both of my pregnancies, especially since I now have a severe uterine prolapse shortly after my second! (I never even knew this could happen in someone my age- 36!) I will now try to repair some of the damage pregnancy and delivery has wrought on my body by using the exercises in this book, and fully recommend other women do the same to avoid the awful problems I am having!

Probably not for women who are already exercisers.......2002-08-31

Although this book has some really interesting points on abdominal exercises (although the other reviewers are right about the poor organization; and, there are typos and visually the pages are very cluttered), it absolutely does not offer an overall fitness program. It's much more like a physical therapy program focussed on abs and pelvic floor. So, if what you're looking for is supplemental exercises to add, it may be fine for you, but I'm going back to the drawing board to find a more all-purpose pregnancy exercise book. Plus, I think I can handle more than three or four crunches (I think she says you can do "up to five").

Also, be aware that the author has a judgmental streak. I may agree with some of her digs at the medical establishment (I was delighted, for example, to hear her pooh-pooh the idea that lying or exercising on your back will cause supine hypotension), but when she aims her barbs at women with bad posture, for example, it seems counter-productive (I could do without the screaming jagged "NO!"s next to the pictures of incorrect posture).

Beauty Is Convulsive is a biographical meditation on one of the twentieth century's most compelling and famous artists, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). At the age of nineteen, Kahlo's life was transformed when the bus in which she was riding was hit by a trolley car. Pierced by a steel handrail and broken in many places, she entered a long period of convalescence during which she began to paint self-portraits. In 1928, at twenty-one, she joined the Communist Party and came to know Diego Rivera. The forty-one-year-old Rivera, Mexico's most famous painter, was impressed by the force of Kahlo's personality and by the authenticity of her art, and the two soon married. Though they were devoted to each other, intermittent affairs on both sides, Frida's grief over her inability to bear a child, and her frequent illnesses made the marriage tumultuous. This prose poem is typical Maso --vigorous, daring, always original. She brings together parts of Kahlo's biography, her letters, medical documents, and her diaries with language that is often as erotic and colorful as Kahlo's paintings.

Dancing with Frida.......2002-12-20

After having read Kahlo's diary she kept in her final days, Maso became inspired by not only Kahlo's art, but by her vision of the world, and has created in "Beauty Is Convulsive" a marvelous series of prose poems. Incorporating aspects of Kahlo's life into meditations on suffering and pain as art, these poems weave a tapestry of Kahlo's artistic mind, which was deeply affected by her physical ailments that persisted throughout her life. This is not a biography, but rather a side dish for readers enthralled by Kahlo's (or Maso's, for that matter) powerful art. Reaching back to the styles used in her previous book "Aureole", Carole Maso has written a fascinating, complex, and unique book celebrating a passionate artist.

Stupid rant by jealous man.......2006-05-23

There is a song by the Sex Pistols that goes something like this, "Problems, problems, the problem is you...so what you going to do." Ben Downing has an incredible chip on his shoulders and instead of writing nonsense like "My Maso Problem" which is pure venom and resentment, he should try doing some real writing. It might make him feel better.

It brings out the breadth and scale of their activities, and explains their contribution towards broadening women's political, occupational, and family roles at home and abroad. Dr Harrison clarifies the organizational context and ancestry of inter-war feminism through creating a portrait gallery of sixteen prominent but very different feminists.
