Customer Reviews:
Good book on common folklore of plants.......2007-04-10
This is a good book on the past uses and folklore of plants. It contains not just Texas plants but plants that are common throughout the U.S. Each chapter is relatively short (two to five pages) and on a different plant. It makes an interesting book to share with others and pass the time on a rainy day.
Delightful.......2001-04-12
This charming book captivated and amazed me with its blend of whimsical legend and fascinating fact about many of our most common wildflowers. For example, simply imagine driving on a set of tires made from goldenrod! This book is a must-have addition to the library of any student of native plant lore.
Book Description
Newly certified divers, those getting back into the sport after a hiatus, and casual recreational divers all have one thing in common: They want to choose a dive vacation that matches their skill levels. This practical guide takes the guesswork out of selecting the best dive getaways in the Great Lakes, Florida, Central America, the Caribbean, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Rather than profile individual dive sites, this guide provides essential information on the types of diving that each location offers, from 30-foot entry-level dives in the Keys to 100-foot wall dives off Saba. Are there divers of different skill levels traveling together? This book can help readers select a vacation spot that everyone can enjoy. The author also includes expert tips on what to bring and how to pack it; helpful hints about proper weighting and buoyancy; an on-board, pre-dive equipment checklist; and a roster of stinging marine life that divers commonly encounter, as well as how to treat their stings or bites. Whether vacationers are currently planning a dive trip or just hope to travel in the future, this handy reference will provide a wealth of indispensible information.

The travel companion for Americans, which you don't really need - 3,5-4 Stars.......2006-07-16
I was a bit disappointed when I first got this book as I expected something totally different. With that said I'll try my best to make a fair review of this book.
If you watched the movies on your Open Water course and read your books, then you more or less already know what Scuba Diver's travel companion has to say. The author of the book is a master scuba diver with about 20 years of experience. This doesn't help when he has very little to add to the Open Water manual. The book itself is a black and white book with some drawings and no real pictures. In other words, don't expect this book to help you choose which dive site to visit next (it explains each dive site, but it's a bit boring to read). The book contains tons and tons of information that is just common sence. Things like: don't throw up upwind or you might get it in your face, and don't swim to the ladder until the diver in front of you has climbed up or else you might get his tank in your head if he falls down. It's not hard to guess where the author's from, and the book is a bit too much Americanized if you ask me.
The chapters goes like this:
Introduction - X
Tips for dive travel - 1
Worldwide dive destinations - 23
Airlines, packing, and local transport - 49
Masks, fins, snorkels, and exposure suits - 65
BC's, regulators, tanks, weights, and dive computers - 81
Weighting and bouyancy - 95
Dive equipment accessories - 103
Predive equipment checks - 123
Enchancing your dive skills - 137
Breathing gas underwater - 163
Hazardous marine life - 173
Care of dive equipment - 187
Expanding diving opportunities - 201
Appendix A: Resources for divers - 213
Appendix B: Dice checklists - 215
Index - 221
About the author - 227
Like I said earlier, if you've read your Open Water manual, you won't need this book. But it won't hurt reading it, it will probably make you remember thing better since repetition is the best way to remember things. And you'll most likely pick up a few tips and tricks.
The book also have some positive sides. I liked the chapter about hazardous marine life. It will tell you about what to stay away from, and how to treat an "attack" by any of these animals. My Open Water book lacked this as far as I can remember. The book also have some nice checklists for packing, pre-dive, equipment and so on. The book also explains some things a bit more in depth than the Open Water manual, like the chapter that deals with care of dive equipment.

Book Description
With World War I and Egypt's colorful politics as background, C.W.R. Long tells the story of four proconsuls (McMahon, Wingate, Allenby and Lloyd), their principal opponent, Sa'ad Zaghul, and the great events of the time - the rise of the WAFD party, the uprising of 1919, the murder of Sir Lee Stack and the Allenby ultimatum. He sheds new light on the strife of members of the High Commission among themselves and the Foreign Office, on the struggle between Egypt and Britain for ownership of the Sudan, on Egypt's fight for independence and on the failure of democracy to take root in the country.

Oh! Just buy the doggon book already!!! :)
Invaluable for anybody working with coral snakes.......1999-04-13
This is an excellent book that summarizes a lot of what is currently known about the coral snakes (Micrurus + Micruroides). The Amazon.com summary pretty much says it all. It is certainly not cheap in comparison to say Cambpell + Lamar's book but there you go. One MAJOR criticism regards the presentation of the photographs. In comparison with the rather professionally presented text, the photographs might as well be from a children's book a couple of decades old (needs to be seen to be believed!). However, the text more than makes up for this.

Book Description
A classic, this book was one of the first to offer support to families after their baby's death and to guide caregivers in their support of these families. With over 250,000 in print, this book touches the hearts of families at the time of their loss and over time as they heal. No matter how, or at what age or gestational age a baby dies, their parents are invited to be supported by Sherokee and her husband David, who themselves have been there. With compassion, guidance and practical suggestions are offered for the decision-making at the time (including why and how one might see, hold, and memorialize one's baby) and over time (such as how to handle such times as anniversaries, holidays, the birth of other babies in the parents close circle.) An excellent bibliography and resource section is included.

Life Saver.......2007-09-13
I was so happy, I was going to have a baby. Then it happened. I didn't understand, why had my baby stopped moving. I thought, oh she's must be to big. However, deep down something felt all wrong. The next day I delivered a very perfect, beautiful, little girl. Only problem, she was stillborn. We were devestated, I became withdrawn & depressed. My sister came with,"Empty Arms" & I was a little disappointed in her. How could she think a book would make things better. She left it on my bedside table since thats where I always stayed. I don't know why I picked it up, but I did. It changed my life & made me realize I had to get up & live again. Today, after years of trying & the help of IVF.I have a beautiful little girl Isabella who is 4y/o. Her sister Sophia would have been 7.
Not impressed with the book........2007-05-20
This book is written as a personal advice journal. There are very few things that are of use to my husband and I in dealing with the stillbirth of our son after the funeral. Most of the advice is centered around dealing with the news itself, the delivery, notifying family and friends. If you enjoy a book that is like reading a personal diary of one woman, this book is for you. I personally did not care for it as the situations discussed were behind my husband and I by the time we read it. We found that "A Silent Sorrow" was a better fit for helping us handle long term issues beyond the first week.
Very helpful.......2007-02-08
This book was sent to me by the author, Sherokee. After I lost my two day old son Travis, I watched Sherokee on the Phil Donahue Show. I wrote her a letter about losing my son and how watching her speak about the loss of her son had helped me with my grief. She sent me a copy of this book. That was 21 years ago. I now use this book to help other parents in the Compassionate Friends group that I co-lead. If you have any friends that are going through this terrible loss, this is the book that can help them.

Empty Arms.......2007-01-06
This is an excellant book for anyone who has experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of an infant. It focuses on all of the aspects of dealing with this kind of a trauma and helps one get in touch with ways to cope. I highly recommend this book for anyone going through this kind of experience and believe it is a must on the book shelves of pastors, counselors, maternity nurses, and anyone who encounters these kinds of situations. It is an excellant resource to distribute to grieving families.
The BEST resource to grieving parents.......2005-09-03
This book was BY FAR the best resource I found after my son was stillborn. It is an easy-to-read, practical guide to anyone who has suffered from an infant loss. After reading several other books this summmer, I also found that this book is referred to many times within others. Most support groups offer this book to bereaved parents more than any other. I can now see why.

Book Description
By Iris Origo. Introduction by Jonathan Galassi.
Contessa Teresa Guiccioli was 19 years oldand married to a jealous and violent husbandwhen she became Byrons mistress in 1819. Incorporating 116 letters from Byron to Teresa, and some of her answers to him, Iris Origos narrative of Byrons Italian years not only follows the lovers five year affair but provides real insight into the labyrinth of Italian social and political life of the time, including Byrons part in the Italian revolutionary movement, which led to his lifes last adventure in Greece. Teresa was his last love, but before the end came the relations of these passionate, unstable peopleone an English aristocrat and celebrity and the other at the height of Italian society, involving intermediaries, surveillance, look-outs, spies, bribes, and inspired, as could be expected, great scandal. They became political exiles, and for political reasons, in which the affair with Byron served as an excuse, Teresas marriage was dissolved by the Pope. With a new introduct! ! ion by Jonathan Galassi, the intense focus of this biography, originally published in 1949, results in drama as taut and personal as a novels and will appeal to general readers and students of Byron alike.
