5 out of 5 stars Excellent cruising guide.......2007-08-27

Rick Rhodes' book takes you on a cruise of the great rivers with all of the vital information needed to transit them safely. He provides marina names and facts about their facilities that you need on a trip of this nature. We will have it on our chart table when we go for our river trip.

      2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2007-08-21

My husband & I wanted to run the IL. river from Grafton to Liverpool in our boat. So we bought this book. Before we received it, we put our boat in at Liverpool, mile 128 & went down to mile 97.5 Brownsville. The book doesn't mention anything about the Marina in Havana where you can get gas & eat. It doesn't mention Bath at all where they have a bar on the river & you can get food & drinks. It says you can get gas in Brownsville, but you can't! They have food & thats it! Those are enough mistakes for us to decide to send the book back. It cannot be reliable. Unless you want to get stuck out on the river without gas, I would not buy this book!

      5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2006-03-23

Although I do not have a boat, I saw this book at a library and it has what I would consider very useful information, such as maps, distances, channels and phone numbers for bridge tenders, where to dock your boat, what's available when you dock, amount of turbulence in the locks, height of bridges in the up and down positions, and a whole lot more. It is written as a downstream narrative.

      Book Description

The second volume in this six-volume biography tells the story of the eventful middle years in the life of Thomas Jefferson: his ministry to France in the years just before the French Revolution and during the early stages of that conflict; his service as secretary of state in President George Washington's first cabinet; the crucial period of his first differences with Alexander Hamilton; and the beginnings of his long struggle with the Federalists.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, not quite as enjoyable as the first volume.......2007-07-01

This book is the second volume in Dumas Malone's six volume biography called "Jefferson and His Time". In the introduction Mr. Malone explains that, although he originally planned to cover Jefferson's life from the end of the Revolution and his appointment as Minister to France through the beginning of Jefferson's presidency as part of an originally projected 4 volume work, the depth of material required him to split this into two volumes.

From the outset his decision to expand his work into an extra volume (as he would also later do with the period covering Jefferson's presidency) seemed as it might be an unwelcome one. Mr. Malone's straightforward prose, that I enjoyed and appreciated in the fist volume, was replaced with a more scholarly and cumbersome style. Especially during the first half of the book, covering Mr. Jefferson's time in France, Mr. Malone's excessive and often redundant analysis at times made me feel like a hamster in a wheel. Part of the issue seems to stem from Mr. Malone's decision to abandon the chronological flow of the first volume for topic themed chapters with considerable chronological overlap. While this does serve to organize related information, it also leads to much of the redundancy mentioned earlier.

Luckily the second half of the volume, covering Mr. Jefferson's tenure as Secretary of State under George Washington's first term and the beginnings of his political rivalry with Alexander Hamilton, comes into much more distinct focus, and is very enjoyable.

I do not doubt that this volume is as Mr. Malone intended, although for me it was not as enjoyable to read as the first, and regardless of the intent of the author or the strength of the material presented, is the most important factor in making my recommendation. More specifically, the first half of the book would receive 3 stars and the second half the full 5.

3 out of 5 stars Politics Politics Politics.......2003-10-31

The book primarily focuses on Jeferson's political career, namely secretary of state, starting with the formation of the presidency (1788). The book sometimes focuses too much on the political front, and less on Jeferson's personal life and character.

      1 out of 5 stars PURE CONTRADICTION.......2002-12-29

Thomas Jefferson was no Satan. But, I will implore all the fanatics and sycophants who revere him as a 'man of justice and freedom' to wake-up from their slumber. Don't let the world laugh at your ignorance!
Mr Jefferson was by every means a slave-holder. Thus, this idea of linking his name to the Rights of Man is a contradiction.
If Dumas Malone must continue on this track, then he should mention the names of John Adams, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Abraham Lincoln, and we shall listen to him. Thomas Jefferson does not fit in this realm. He doesn't belong here! But, I am not really surprised. This book was published in 1951: at the peak of Color-Bar.

5 out of 5 stars Jefferson in Paris.......2002-12-25

What can be said about this monument to Jefferson scholarship? I am sure that somewhere in universities around the United States there are "scholar squirrels who want to put down this invaluable resource in Jefferson studies. It is always the way that mice attempt to gnaw at lions. This is not a perfect work (and my remarks refer to all of the books in the series as a whole), there are somethings, namely Sally Hemmings references which are wrong and will not sit well with American 21st century mores. There is the issue of slavery which was handled much differently 50 years ago than it is now.
Jefferson is not worthy of our interest because of Sally Hemmings and because he kept slaves. Jefferson is great because of the Declaration of Independence and his fight for the rights of man. While it may have been hypocritical to preach liberty and keep slaves, it is doubtful that slavery ever would have been abolished if Jefferson had never gained the prominence that he did. This book and the others that follow show why we should continue to honor the public man even though his private side may have been wanting.

5 out of 5 stars Jefferson and the Rights of Man.......2002-04-17

Jefferson and the Rights of Man written by Dumas Malone is the second installment of a six part biography of Thomas Jefferson. As the first volume Jefferson: The Virginian was in the time frame of (1743 - 1784), this volume takes us from where the first volume ended in Jefferson's life, to the end of Washington's first term as President of the United States and his subsequent unanimous re-election, (1784 - 1792).

Jefferson's European mission starts off this volume, concluding with his service as the United States's first Secretary of State under George Washington. But, in between we see Jefferson laying the seeds of his philosophy and the implication regarded as timeless and universal.

George Washington's first term was a proving ground for Jefferson to get his views across to Washington, but Washington has Hamilton and there in lies the rub. As political parties were in their infancy, the time was ripe for a political view points to be exploited and Hamilton was up to task. So, naturally Jefferson had a different view point and was voicing his opinion to Washington.

Jefferson in this period of time was primarily concerned with foreign affairs which kept him busy as Great Britain was being pulled into a European war. But the "war" between Jefferson and Hamilton was just begining. Jefferson was well aware of the implicit dangers in the political and economic situation, but Enlightenment was budding and thus, begining to give proof of his undying faith, that men and society can be saved by means of knowledge.

This period in Jefferson's life is the richest with regards to private friendships and will lay the bricks to the foundation to the rest of his life. As Jefferson begins his battle with the Federalists, Hamilton is his primary opposition.

        Book Description

Faced with her two-year-old toddler's precipitous bout with epilepsy and his puzzling behaviors, Valerie Paradiz took a bold and unusual path, coming to terms with and ultimately embracing the strange beauty of her son Elijah's special neurological disorder, which was diagnosed as Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.

In Elijah's Cup, Paradiz tells the powerful story of her family's struggle with her son's disease, one characterized by social awkwardness, literal-mindedness, and a fixation with particular subjects and interests. Like attention deficit disorder (ADD), dyslexia, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, Asperger's has exploded in diagnosis in the last decade, reconfiguring the known incidence of autism in the population with estimates as high as one in fifty people.

Ever since autism was "discovered" by researchers in the 1940s, the disability has been under the strict purview of professionals in medicine, psychiatry, and education. Like the deaf community, autistics themselves have had little voice in expressing their real experience and needs. They were framed as too "sick" to be conscious of their own internal lives, too "mentally ill" to possess an identity. All this has changed.

Today there is a blossoming movement of autistic self-advocacy groups and alliances that pose challenging questions to the medical status quo. A fascinating, independent expression of another way of life, full of quirkiness, hardship, and humor, has emerged. Elijah's Cup is a provocative and pioneering book that pushes the envelope of what we know about autism. Were Andy Warhol, Albert Einstein, and the comedian Andy Kaufman, whom we usually think of as brilliant eccentrics, autistic? Can these figures serve as role models to this community?

Elijah's Cup offers a refreshing take on mental disability from the perspective of civil rights, history, and the arts. From encounters with the founders of the first civil rights organizations for autistics, who guide Paradiz and her son toward a sense of community and self-respect, and with visual artists, who share with Elijah their special ability to "think in pictures," Elijah reaches extraordinary heights in his sociability and emotional well-being.

In this utterly absorbing and inspiring narrative, Paradiz also reveals her own shadow syndrome, which afflicts many family members of autistics. She is a "cousin," a genetic link to her son's autism. Standing as she does on this cultural borderline, Paradiz is a sensitive translator between two worlds, revealing a groundbreaking insider's view of the beauty of minds hidden in the shadows of autism.

Elijah's Cup is not ony a superb read that I would recommend to all teachers of children but also an adventurous journey into what it is to be autistic as well as to have aspergers syndrome. Paradiz writes beautifully, bringing her story to life in graphic detail while informing her reader in a broad and comprehensive manner concerning both Autism and Aspergers. She has a comprehensive index, bibliography, and reference section that will be of help to many. Tasha Halpert

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-03-14

This was one of the first books I read after discovering my son had Asperger's. Valerie Paradiz's insight, vulnerability, and unswerving truth have helped me every day in dealing with my children... The joys and miracles, and the difficult, difficult challenges. I truly love this book and recommend it for a strong understanding of the human side of asperger's an the challenges a family faces.

5 out of 5 stars Marching to a Different Drummer.......2005-09-17

Valerie and Ben are devastated when their then 2-year-old son was diagnosed with autism in addition to epilepsy. Ben has trouble accepting the diagnosis and in time the marriage dissolved.

Instead of condemning Elijah to a life of labels and misperceptions about autism, Valerie Paradiz educated her small upstate New York community as well as the world at large in this book about her personal experiences with autism. Her son and father are both on the spectrum and this book is one of many that points out the genetic basis autism has.

Elijah was enrolled in special programs from the age of three and his greatest progress is made at home and with a friend he and Valerie meet. Sharron, an independent artist is herself struggling with Asperger's, the spectrum partner to autism. She recognizes in Elijah similar traits and experiences she contends with and finally receives a diagnosis. She bonded immediately with the boy and was his regular sitter for some years.

I like the way Valerie worked with Elijah; I like the way she taught him more appropriate ways of responding to peers, such as Trevor in the chess club. Trevor came away with empowered with knowledge and a chance to be more accepting of someone he sees as being "different" and Elijah understands what he can do to regulate his behaviors and move more comfortably in social circles.

I like the conversations mother and son had; I also like the outdoor programs for people on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum that are described in the book. Best of all, having autism is CELEBRATED!

I've banged on the different drum for a long time about how being on the a/A spectrum is something to celebrate. People on the spectrum have novel perceptions and unique insights that many neurotypical (NT) counterparts do not. One misperception is that people with autism all think in pictures, which simply is not true. Ben Levinson, co-author of "Finding Ben" and Sean Barron, co-author of "There's a Boy In Here" are not picture thinkers and neither are many other people on the a/A spectrum.

Meltdowns due to sensory overload are not uncommon among the spectrum. Sadly, the NT world often looks askance at those on the a/A spectrum simply from a lack of understanding of what people with autism contend with on a routine basis. Elijah, for example would vomit during thunderstorms as the noise upset him. I like the way another reviewer said in re a/A, "Vive la difference!" Wave that banner of interlocking puzzle pieces proudly - autism is NOT something to be ashamed of having!

Two songs seem to underscore this book so perfectly - Herman Kelly & Life's "Let's Dance to the Drummer's Beat" and Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Poneys 1968 song, "(Beat of a) Different Drum." With more drums beating, you get quite a tune! With more drums being beaten, you have different drummers!

People on the a/A spectrum enrich the world tremendously. The contributions are NOT limited to Temple Grandin, Andy Warhol and Einstein and other public figures. People with autism also provide ample opportunity to learn acceptance and realize the world is for everybody and not just the NT population. All too often, people on the a/A spectrum are expected to make all the concessions, especially social concessions to the NT world and try to keep track of the Tacit Social Codes & Rules, which always seem to change at the whims of the NT world.

Now let's all march to our different drummers.

        5 out of 5 stars A truly extraordinary book!.......2005-01-24

This is an extraordinary, rare and unique book about an autistic child. The thing that makes it this way, is his mother's pure and loving acceptance of him, just the way he is. His mother's creative solutions to make living with him the best it can be. Everyone having anything to do with an autistic child, should read it, if only for the different point of view. The view that every child has value, and there is something to be said for treasuring him just for who he is.

Elijah is a fascinating child. He has been able to absorb much comprehension about the world, and his own disability, and how to cope, through his endless questioning of his mother, and her amazingly patient, honest, and encouraging replies. He will be an adult with a tremendous advantage over other children like him, for having had Valerie Paradiz for a mother.

        5 out of 5 stars A refreshingly different perspective from a parent.......2005-01-02

This is a terrific story that chronicles the first 10 years of an autistic boy's life. The story starts like most accounts written by parents -- the nagging worries, the lack of language, the diagnosis, the struggle to teach the child. But then something different...

Through a care-taker, the mother is shown that her son's differences are just part of what make him who he is. Instead of trying to illustrate treatments (like most ASD books written by parents), Elijah's mother just describes her journey through life, her search for knowledge & understanding of Asperger's and autism ...so that she can get to know her son better. Simply put, this is a book of love & acceptance.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great read.......2006-06-16

I am beginnig to learn about model ship building. I have bought several books on modeling and wooden ships. It seemed that the more I read, the less I learned, UNTIL I purchased this book. I gives more details, more information, and more additional resources than anything I have found thusfar.
This is a MUST READ for any beginng plank on frame or plank on bulkhead shipbuilder.
It also is simply a Great read. It is likened unto a novel.
            Thank you Milton Roth!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Broad But Not Deep.......2003-06-22

This book is more of an introduction to ship modeling than a comprehensive volume. It might be appropriate as (one of) the first book(s) one reads on the subject, but is not sufficiently detailed to live up to its highly ambitious title. The chapter on gunnery fittings is the most detailed, but still can't impart the detail and volume of information available from other sources. The author communicates his palpable enthusiasm for the hobby. This, combined with the broad but somewhat thin material he offers, will stimulate readers to further and more detailed exploration of ship modeling. This book is a good choice as a gift for someone (early teen or older) who may be interested in the field.

            4 out of 5 stars Take a "Bow"..........2002-12-26

I'm all new in the modeling wooden ships game, though I have been fascinated since my early childhood and grew up working plastic aircraft models. I always saw wooden modeling as the Holy Grail and finally decided to get on with it. I was captivated at age 7 watching the Cpt from the "Ghost and Mrs Muir", seizing lines and tending to his ratlins whilst educating the youngest boy about the moral to-do's and don'ts.

Having recently purchased my first model, the Scottish Maid, from Artesania Latina, I decided after looking the plans over that I was going to need more in depth help and assistance. After researching online I have discovered that there is quite a decent literary safety net regarding the subject, but as usual it's a case of where to start?

Well after leafing through this book in relative depth I have found a brilliant place for the Ship Modeling neophyte to make their start. The work gives a great overview of the many complex areas involved in the longtime craft of Ship Modeling as well as gently leading the enthusiast into the greater intracacies involved therein. I was delighted among other chapters to find a section on Ships in Bottles, one of my fascinations, as well as informative tips and tricks regarding all manner of applications from planking to seizing lines and rigging.

I found the sections on Running Rigging, Proportions of Rigging, Making Masts and Sails for Sailing Ships a revelation, which has totally whet my appetite for exploring singular works dedicated to these subjects alone. Roth does a great job of keeping the language simple and with a little observation of the diagrams, which are easy and clear, most questions left wanting in the text are answered. I only wish this work had more colour plates of ships in the building and completion stages, which is why I have witheld the final star.

Apart from this small omission I can wholeheartedly recommend this work to the novice and enthusiast alike as it has enlightened and informed me as well as fueling my passion for this noble craft more than ever! So if you want to know where your mizzen is and how to rig your gaffs; if you care to know how to set the rake of your masts or find out what box off is all about, then get 'Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern' and quit your blatherin land lubbers!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent stimulant to aspiring modellers.......2002-10-26

I found this to be a very informative collection of hints, tips and reference information for any modeller.
Unlike a previous reviewer, I only found one photo that might be classified as upside-down; the rest of the photos and diagrams are clear concise and very helpful.
Excellent sections on tools and adhesives plus 'why didn't I think of that...' tips; there are some nice tables not seen in other books and some excellent line drawings of rigging and sail tackle.

This is not intended to be a guide to building an 'Admiralty' model, or a faithful built-up model; what it does do is fire one's enthusiasm for building a reasonably accurate scale model - other books cover the finer points of fidelity.

I would recommend this to anyone starting to build model ships, it is not too detailed to put one off, nor is it dumbed-down.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for ship modellers.......2002-02-04

I find it difficult to describe how so many topics are so completely and well discussed. Dr. Roth has provided an easily read, thorough overview of a wide range of subjects, artfully blending full size and model ship design and construction techniques in a manner that provides both historical and "how to" information in a friendly, clear and concise manner.

His topics range from historical full size ship construction (choosing parts of a tree to make frames, mast and rigging sizing, cannon construction and rigging, hull colors) to modeling hints and tips (sail and flag making, simple ways to make rope coils, blocks, ladders, grates, ratlines and deadeyes).

Dr. Roth also includes home made special tools, easily understood rigging drawings, hull planking techniques. Has a section on kit types, adhesives, basic and advanced tools and workspace suggestions for beginning modelers. In addition, Dr. Roth provides dozens of additional references, manufacturers and resources.

If a next edition is in the offing (this one is dated 1988), the addition of more excellent color photos and website references for the "cyber modeler" would make this a candidate for the only reference a ship modeller would need.

This book is worthy of a prime spot in any ship modeler's library, and the only reason I rated it five stars is that six stars are not available.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent text for amateur growers........2004-08-29

I use this book constantly when diagnosing plant diseases in African violets. The language is scientific and can be a bit daunting, but non-scientists like me can learn a great deal. The photo section is very specific and helpful. No cures are listed, but once a grower knows exactly which disease is active, it is easier to search out the cure. I heartily recommend it!

I think my title says it all. I thank the Gods for Serge Kahili King. I have been a Healer for 30 years and have also read a lot of books. His is the finest I;ve ever read on the subject...why? Because his techniques really work. I shall be recommending this book to all who come to me for Healing in the future so that they can learn to help themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Saved My Life.......2004-09-28

I got several books, videos and audio tapes from Serge Kahili King but his "instant healing" , which I have labelled "it never happened" technique - saved my life several years ago, when half of my face became paralyzed and when doctors told me that I'll just have to accept it and that it may even get worse over time.

The paralysis was bad enough that I couldn't even speak coherently (I'd have to hold my lips with my hand in order to make an understandable sound), nor could I eat properly due to lack of sensation and because I couldn't move the muscles of my mouth. It was simply unacceptable to me to live like that, so I remembered "instant healing" technique.

I have adapted that "instant healing / it never happened" technique with NLP Time-Line technique and spend few days running the new pattern in my mind re-living my life from before the event until the present moment as if my face was always normal and it never became paralyzed.

It was not INSTANT healing - but it took ONLY FEW DAYS for my face to become COMPLETELY NORMAL and to FUNCTION PERFECTLY. My friend said that that he was utterly amazed as he watched the transformation on my face returning to normal - he said it was just like witnessing a miracle. Yeah, our minds are truly miraculous.

            5 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Book.......2004-04-01

A terrific book, well written in plain english.

            3 out of 5 stars It's a start.......2005-01-01

I was estatic to finally find a book based around the career of the Andrew Sisters. If you're looking for information on who the sisters were as people, Sforza only hints on the subject. This book is largely a chronicle of their career and Sforza does an amazing job of tracking their discography. The book is not truly a biography as it does not delve into events in their personal lives. It leaves many things to the readers' imagination.

It would have been wonderful if the remaining sisters could have buried the hatchet one last time and collaborated on a biography. It would have been truly wonderful to have a book that commemorated not only their work, but the amazing lives they led.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a bio about the Andrews Sisters--thanks Sforza!.......2004-02-08

Sforza and U. of Ky. press are to commended on issuing the first biography of the Andrews Sisters. While this book may not answer every question, particularly about the private lives of the sisters, it does establish a publication basis for future efforts. In and of itself, the book documents the public careers of this seminal trio of popular song. Sforza lays out in convincing terms the threesome's place in history by comparing them to other vocal groups who have come and gone over the years. He rightly points to the variety of music sung by the Andrews gals from their early swing efforts of the 1930's to their harmonizing of broadway music in the 1970's, and everything in between--South American music, hymns, polkas, Hawiian, Christmas--their rousing version of Jingle Bells with Bing Crosby can still be heard in supermarkets across the land 50 years after it was recorded! And, this perennial trio was a hit in every medium of their day--records, films, theaters, nightclubs, radio and television. They packed a wallop and were loved by millions of fans in America and abroad. The book brings all this home to the reader. It should be of interest both to audiences who remember the Boogie Woogie girls, and to younger fans who still enjoy their music and want to know more about their unparalleled career. For more serious collectors the book provides a filmography, a discography, and information about their on air performances on radio and TV, their gold records, most played jukebox hits and more. Also, the book features lots of photographs, some rare. Hence, the volume is appropriate for the casual reader, because it is an easy and interesting read, but it is also a must for collectors, discographers, musicologists, and libraries for its valuable information. Appreciation is due Sforza for bringing this book to life; a book that is long overdue.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative........2003-06-02

I read "Swing It" upon recommendation and found it to be both entertaining and informative. As I read through the pages, the Andrews sisters, a band I was vaguely familiar with, came alive to me thanks in great part to Sforza's intricate research and finesse. For the casual reader, I recommend this book as a companion to the music and work of the Andrews sisters. For the educator, I stress the importance of this book and its treasure trove of information as a tool for teaching music, culuture, and history for Sforza not only entertains and informs, but, also, "fleshes out" these interesting women and their contribution to the American tapestry. Work well done, Mr. SForza !!

5 out of 5 stars What's with the lousy reviews?.......2002-08-29

My dad's a veteran of WWII. He bought a biography of The Andrews Sisters, and when I saw "Swing It" on the coffee table, I decided to start reading it. I then decided to order one for a friend of mine who's into swing music, and when he saw the negative reviews posted here, I was dismayed. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which told me lots about this trio that I never knew, from their personal friendship with Lou Costello, to their abundant sacrifices for the war effort of the 1940s, to the reason they were so famous for squabbling. I also never realized that they recorded and performed through 1966 (who would've thought that The Andfrews Sisters recorded things like "Puff! The Magic Dragon" and "I Left My Hearty in San Francisco")? I thoroughly enjoyed the biography, and the pictures were great. And in regard to the bad reviews, I wasn't surprised to find that the e-mail address of the reader who wrote the "Yawn" review was "Nutloaf." That about says it.

            5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2002-06-07

The author did a nice job with the limitations that any Andrews Sisters biographer would encounter. Would have loved a lot more about the sisters as sisters, growing up, their family, etc. but there is not a tremendous amount of biographical info and the sisters did not provide a lot when all were living and the surviving Patty has not come forth with much. Hopefully, she will be able to get it all down....SOON! But this book fills the gap until then.

              Book Description

Thomas Hodgskin was one of the most significant thinkers of nineteenth-century radicalism. An active writer for over fifty years and an associate of Bentham and James Mill amongst others, his life provides a paradigm for understanding the evolution of radicalism from Waterloo to the Second Reform Act. This study rescues him from his marginalisation and mis-casting as an `early English socialist': far from being a socialist, many of his views seem to mark him out as a forerunner of New Right or neo-liberal ideology. Drawing on a range of new sources and reassessing Hodgskin's life and work, Dr Stack argues that the crux of Hodgskin's thought was the essentially theological distinction he drew between nature and artifice. Throughout, he makes plain the centrality of providentialism to nineteenth-century radicalism.Dr DAVID STACKteaches in the Department of History at Queen Mary and Westfield College at the University of London.
