With enticing titles such as "Savoring the Shore in Connecticut," "Flying High in Quechee," "Indian Summer in Kennebunkport," and "Stirring Things up at Sturbridge," Away for the Weekend: New England provides a full year's worth of weekend opportunities.
Because she experienced the daunting feeling of wanting to "do it all" in New England without knowing where to start, author Eleanor Berman compiled this useful guide to help narrow down the choices: "The selections are admittedly personal, limited to locations and events I have visited and enjoyed, so not every single sightseeing attraction, lodging, or restaurant in each location is included. I've tried instead to pick only the best--places I've either been to myself or had recommended to me by local sources or frequent visitors." While she makes it clear that this is a guide devoted to destinations and events, Berman does list some of the special inns and dining places for each location covered. The seasonally inspired getaways are located in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
In addition to an alphabetical index, the helpful category listing includes entries under headings such as "beaches and parks," "children's activities," and "historic sites." Whether you have a weekend or longer, this book provides an excellent source of ideas for exploring New England. --Kathryn True

Setting the World Ablaze is the story of the three men who, perhaps more than any others, helped bring the United States into being: George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. Weaving their three life stories into one narrative, John E. Ferling delivers a genuine and intimate illustration of them and, in doing so, gives us a new understanding of the passion and uncertainty of the struggle to form a new nation.
The three sections of Ferling's study chronologically examine major epochs in the lives of the three men: youth and early adulthood, the years surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and finally, defeat of the British in the Revolutionary War. Through the medium of comparative biography, Setting the World Ablaze attempts to link personal and impersonal elements in the contours of the American Revolution and the war that accompanied it. A professor of History at the State University of West Georgia and a leading scholar of the Revolutionary era, Ferling draws on a firm command of primary sources and his own expertise of the period to examine fundamental issues critical to our understanding of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson, as well as of the historical period. He abandons the standard iconography and focuses instead on what motivated and inspired these three men as human beings. For example, what forces shaped each of the three during his youth, what was each like as a mature young man before public affairs and fame changed everything, and what determined their behavior as activists? John Adams emerges from the narrative as the most underappreciated hero of the Revolution, while Jefferson is revealed as the most eloquent but also most overrated of the Founders. Personal anecdotes from all periods of their lives add to Ferling's already rich portrait and give the reader a unique sense of how Washington, Adams, and Jefferson negotiated the many challenges they encountered throughout their lives. --Bertina Loeffler Sedlack
Book Description
Setting the World Ablaze is the story of the American Revolution and of the three Founders who played crucial roles in winning the War of Independence and creating a new nation: George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. Braiding three strands into one rich narrative, John Ferling brings these American icons down from their pedestals to show them as men of flesh and blood, and in doing so gives us a new understanding of the passion and uncertainty of the struggle to form a new nation. A leading historian of the Revolutionary era, Ferling draws upon an unsurpassed command of the primary sources and a talent for swiftly moving narrative to give us intimate views of each of these men. He shows us both the overarching historical picture of the era and a gripping sense of how these men encountered the challenges that faced them. We see Washington, containing a profound anger at British injustice within an austere demeanor; Adams, far from home, struggling with severe illness and French duplicity in his crucial negotiations in Paris; and Jefferson, distracted and indecisive, confronting uncertainties about his future in politics. John Adams, in particular, emerges from the narrative as the most under-appreciated hero of the Revolution, while Jefferson is revealed as the most overrated, yet most eloquent, of the Founders. Setting the World Ablaze shows in dramatic detail how these conservative men--successful members of the colonial elite--were transformed into radical revolutionaries.

history you can enjoy........2007-02-12
this is a historical work on the american revolution that revolves principally around the figures of washington, jefferson, and john adams. it a book the casual reader can delight in, filled with lively prose and a narrative thrust missing so much in other historical works. a highly recommended read for anyone interested in the american revolution.
brief, but a must read.......2004-12-22
anyone new to the early history of the republic should consider reading this book. while it is quite brief, ferling does a decent job of telling the tale of the revolution through the eyes of the first three presidents. at times he is heavy handed with jefferson, but any student of the american revolution should know that jefferson's greatest contributions came after independence was secured. the reverence for the declaration of independence came long after it was written; its impact at the time is highly debatable. ferling spends a great deal of time trying to pull adams from the depths of obscurity-his bias is evident-but does make a compelling argument that adams is worthy of the praise. it should be noted that this book ends, for all intents and purposes, and the end of the war, and is merely an assessment of the contributions that washington, adams, and jefferson made during the revolution, and is not an evaluation of their presidencies. nevertheless, it is worthy of your time.
An easy, relaxing read........2001-09-28
This brief (300 pages) history of the American Revolution, as seen through the actions of Adams, Jefferson, and Washington, is a thoroughly enjoyable, pool side type of read. Granted, it is a superficial history of the Revolution, but provides an interesting perspective of the motivations, interactions, and rather different personalities of the three founding fathers. Mr. Ferling's work does seem to be at times rather colored in favor of Washington and Adams, which might be expected, as he has written biographies of our first and second presidents. He makes some rather interesting comments about Jefferson's personality; comments which come close to a psychoanalysis of our third president. Overall, if you are searching for a history of the revolution, this work is not for you. If you are ready for a relaxing narrative of the revolution, and the actions of these three individuals, you will not be disappointed.
Poor Perspective for a History Professor.......2001-06-11
As an avid reader of the American Revolution, I had heard great things about this book. Unfortunately, it was terribly disappointing. Ferling spends too much time raising Adams to god-like status, in an apparent attempt to continue his sole rehabilitation of Adams' place in our history (see Ferling's other writings). In short, it's a shame that an author that is a history professor spends so much time in the present analyzing what Washington or Jefferson should have done instead of telling us what they did keeping in mind the time period and atmosphere of the late 18th century. If you are looking for a critical analysis of our Founding Fathers, this book is for you. However, if you are looking for, heaven forbid, a book about history, skip this one.
Incredible History.......2001-03-25
This is the finest book I have read about the Revolution. Ferling is the best at making pure history great. He doesn't engage in phsycho stuff unless he has to. He is very sophisticated and somewhat difficult in the sense his vocabulary is amazing.
He admires washington. He presents the great soilder with a few faults. He makes a god out of Adams and a Demon out of Jefferson.
Great book!!!

Book Description
In 1934, Ebby Thatcher called an old drinking buddy to tell him about the happiness he was finding in sobriety. His friend's name was Bill Wilson, and this book is the story of their life-long friendship. It is both a fascinating history of the formative years of Alcoholics Anonymous, as well as the bitter-sweet tale of the troubled man Bill W. always referred to as "my sponsor."
"Deeply informative and moving, a valuable contribution to the history of A.A. A 'must' reading for anyone interested in one of the more fascinating chapters in A.A.'s history."
--Nell Wing, Retired A.A. Archivist and Bill Wilson's Secretary
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-07-27
I have been interested in AA history for several years. This book provides a lot of interesting facts about Ebby and includes the connections leading up to his meeting with Bill. Without him Bill would have had no message to carry to Dr. Bob and I would not be alive to write this. I loved it and couldn't put it down until I finished it.
AA is a Cult.......2007-02-21
1. The Twelve Steps do not work as a program of recovery from drug or alcohol problems.
o The A.A. failure rate ranges from 95% to 100%. Sometimes, the A.A. success rate is actually less than zero, which means that A.A. indoctrination is positively harmful to people, and prevents recovery. Some tests have shown that even receiving no treatment at all for alcoholism is much better than receiving A.A. treatment:
o One of the most enthusiastic boosters of Alcoholics Anonymous, Professor George Vaillant of Harvard University, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. (AAWS), showed by his own 8 years of testing of A.A. that A.A. was worse than useless -- that it didn't help the alcoholics any more than no treatment at all, and it had the highest death rate of any treatment program tested -- a death rate that Professor Vaillant himself described as "appalling". While trying to prove that A.A. treatment works, Professor Vaillant actually proved that A.A. kills. After 8 years of A.A. treatment, the score with Dr. Vaillant's first 100 alcoholic patients was: 5 sober, 29 dead, and 66 still drinking.
(Nevertheless, Vaillant is still a Trustee of Alcoholics Anonymous, and he still wants to send all alcoholics to A.A. anyway, to "get an attitude change by confessing their sins to a high-status healer." That is cult religion, not a treatment program for alcoholism.)
o The A.A. dropout rate is terrible. Most people who come to A.A. looking for help in quitting drinking are appalled by the narrow-minded atmosphere of fundamentalist religion and faith-healing. The A.A. meeting room has a revolving door. The therapists, judges, and parole officers (many of whom are themselves hidden members of A.A. or N.A.) continually send new people to A.A., but those newcomers vote with their feet once they see what A.A. really is. Even A.A.'s own triennial surveys, conducted by the A.A. headquarters (the GSO), say that:
81% of the newcomers are gone within 30 days,
90% are gone in 3 months, and
95% are gone at the end of a year.
That automatically gives A.A. a failure rate of at least 95%. But the GSO does not count all of those people who only attend a few meetings before quitting -- they don't qualify as "members". (That amounts to "cherry-picking".) If we included them, then the numbers would be much worse.
First there is the propaganda technique of "everybody's doing it": "AA or a similar Twelve-Step program is an integral part of almost all successful recoveries".
That is a complete falsehood. The vast majority of the successful people recover without A.A. or any "support group". It's what "everybody" is doing.
Then they use the propaganda techniques of use of the passive voice and vague suggestions: "It is widely believed that not including a Twelve-Step program in a treatment plan can put a recovering addict on the road to relapse."
It is widely believed by whom? And what do those unnamed people know? What are their qualifications? Are they doctors? Medical school professors? Or salesmen for a 12-Step treatment center? Why should we care what some unnamed invisible fools allegedly believe, anyway?
The authors also use the propaganda technique of fear-mongering: you will be "on the road to relapse" -- you will probably die -- unless you practice Bill Wilson's Twelve Step cult religion.
And then the fluff-headed Pollyanna attitude is outrageous: Just going to the wonderful A.A. meetings is supposedly all that is needed to fix some alcoholics.
But since A.A. has a zero-percent success rate above and beyond the normal rate of spontaneous remission, that cannot possibly be true.
Very Interesting.......2007-01-26
Ebby was a man you can't help but love. Kind of like Otis from Andy Griffith. Only his life was much more heartbreaking. Also he played a part in changing the world for the better.
An important piece of AA history.......2004-12-14
This book contains great information and insight about the man who was instrumental in the formation of the 12 Step programs. I even bought one for my sponsor, who knew of Ebby, but didn't know some of the history this book provides. A wonderful addition to every recovery library!
Essential AA History and a Fun Read!.......2001-12-30
Mel B. has given us a gift in "Ebby, The Man Who Sponsored Bill W.". Finally, the question of, What ever happened to Ebby, is answered fully and interestingly. I especially enjoyed: 1. the social background of the relationship and friendship which led ultimately to Ebby's call on Bill W., 2. Ebby's particular but familiar character qualities that made continuous sobriety difficult for him, 3. Bill W.'s never ending love and respect for Ebby, his Sponsor, that literally sent AA's to the edge of the earth in a quest to 'get Ebby sobered up again', and 4. Mel B's tasteful insertion of "fun facts" throughout the text which will delight readers.
Ebby, came from a very prominent and wealthy Albany New York family. Both his father and brother served as Mayor of Albany and his brother came astonishingly close to becoming the Governor of New York when FDR left to become President. The family summered in the wealthy retreat of Manchester, Vermont where Ebby's father was a regular in the "Lincoln Golf Foresome" with Abraham Lincoln's only surviving son, Robert Todd Lincoln. It is in this resort-like Manchester setting where Ebby met Bill W. (and, indeed, where Bill W. met Lois Burnham who became his wife). Mel B. through his wonderfully flowing style will take you to Manchester for a bird's eye view of these New England Socialites.
Mel also does a great job of giving us hints about Ebby's character which will be familiar to all of us in recovery. Ebby was forever pointing the finger at other people, places and things as the source of his problems. You will also learn about the wonderful character assets Ebby had which made him so endering to his family and friends such as his gift with children and his single-mindedness and determination when he was engaged in a project which interested him.
You will get a great first hand account of Ebby firing a shotgun in downtown Manchester to rid himself of annoying Pigeons (birds not sponsees) who threatented his just completed paint job on the family property in Manchester. The legal consequences of this incident led to his sponsorship by Rowland H. (The rich Industrialist in the Big Book who Dr. Carl Jung told was hopeless unless he had a "vital spiritual experience") and ultimately to "Ebby's miracle". The miracle and new found sobriety led him to share his experience with Bill W.
Alas, Ebby did not maintain his sobriety. After about 2 and 1/2 years, he returned to drinking and this once dapper gentleman of colonial lineage was reduced to a homeless urchin roaming the streets of Manhattan in search of a handout and a drink. In fact, it was not uncommon for Ebby to beg in the offices of the newly formed AA, and at times pass out on the couch in the lobby.
Eventually, Ebby fell off the radar screen much to the sadness and grief of Bill and Lois W.
A group of men from Texas who were founding AA all over the Lone Star State and were feeling a deep debt of gratitude to Bill W. a frequent visitor, asked Bill what they could do next for him and the rapidly expanding AA. (Searcy W. had recently established a "drying out" clinic in Dallas.) Without hesitation, Bill said, " I would like for you to find Ebby and give him a chance to sober up in your clinic."
I leave you with one of Mel B's "fun facts" that color his text:
"After an early setback in Texas, Ebby would enjoy nearly seven years of continuous sobriety and would hold the same job for several years-an incredible achievment in view of his previous work record." I will leave the final chapters for you.
Scholars of AA must read this book, but it is not written for scholars. All members of AA and friends of AA who want to expand their historical perspective will enjoy and treasure this book. I could not put it down.

go champion go.......2005-12-21
i love all of wonder's foals but i like champion the best because fo his spirit and wild nature. i also like that he won the triple crown!
Snore.......2005-10-07
This book begins with another of Ashleigh's Wonder's fabulous offspring, Wonder's Champion. Cindy(whom all thoroughbred fans have grown to hate) grows to love Champion, and has faith in him, and blah blah blah. Champion has an uncontrollable amount of spirit, that gets in the way of him doing his best in races. This book is extremely forgettable. And when you're done, you'll think, "So wait, what just happened?" All in all, the series has evolved into a disgrace to all equestrian novels. The series is filled with quick fixes, and happy endings. And Joanna Campbell will never be replaced, as it shows in this book. Thoroughly dissapointing. And it only gets worse. Although, arouns #70, the series is said to pick up, there will never be another thoroughbred book after 72. In my opinion, these books need a long rest out in the pasture.
Champions Spirit.......2005-07-19
In Champions Spirit, Wonders Champion has just started his racing career. Wonders Champion was one of Ashleighs Wonders foals. Ashleighs Wonder was one of the best racehorses in her old racing days. And now she passed her talent to her foals:Wonder Pride, Townsend Princess, Mr.Wonderful, and now Wonders Champion has Wonders talent. But Champion is hard to handle. Unlike his brothers and sister, Champion has strong likes and dislikes, goes after the other horses in the walking ring and balks at the gate. Champion is almost perfect when he runs though. After Storms Ransoms death, Cindy Mclean has missed the grey colt terribiely. Cindy mclean has watched some of the best racehorses Whitebrook Farm grow up. Cindy has grew a bond with the famous track breaking record March To Glory, the amazing Sprinter Storms Ransom, and now will Cindy show that love again for Champion when Storm is dead. Cindy Mclean has watched the beautiful colt grow up into a beautiful racer. The only problem is Champions behavior. The track stewards tell Ashleigh Griffen, Champions jockey, trainer, and half owner and Mike Reese, Ashleighs husband that if Champion doesnt start to behave, they will have to disqualify Champion from his races. Cindy, his groom knows the colt could be a champion if he was given the chance. But will Cindy getover Stroms death to help a unperdactble colt become a champion like his family? find out in Champions Spirit. Or email me at Blades60@aol.com
Save the Thoroughbred Series!.......2005-02-17
The Cindy and second generation eventing portions of the series were dark days for Thoroughbred. The plots have since switched back to racing and the newest few books have been exceptional. Just as we thought there was hope for the Thoroughbred series to be restored to its former glory Harper Collins has decided to end the series abruptly after #72. With such a dedicated following and online fan base with members from all over the world, this is a classic and beloved series that has inspired many people and provided horse fans with vicarious thrills and adventure. Ashleigh saved Wonder, now it's up to you to help save Thoroughbred. [...]
where is glory?.......2004-12-01
I loved this book but I don't understand that glory is there one book but gone in the next. Read Ashleigh's Diary. Thoroughbred rocks!!

Lovely book.......2003-04-23
This is a very beautiful book. The pictures really capture the essence of the Thoroughbred-one of the most remarkable of breeds. The brief history included was also nicely written.
Nice book.......2000-03-24
This was an overall nice book, with beautiful photos.
Book Description
Crafters can explore colors with confidence in a variety of mediums with the advice in this book. The principles of color theory are clearly and simply explained and applied to knitting, spinning, weaving, surface design (including stenciling and rubber stamping), hand and machine embroidery, beadwork, and paper collage. Basic color concepts are presented in sections on color description, values, contrasting and complementary colors, warm and cool colors, undertones, and using color relationships. A pull-out color wheel and handy color chips in perforated format that are easy to remove and use for planning, matching, and shopping for supplies are included.
Customer Reviews:
Inroduction to color in fiber arts.......2007-05-18
Colorworks is a great introduction to color theory for people who
work in fiber arts, packed with lots of examples of color schemes
worked out in knitting, weaving, beads, quilting, paper, machine and surface embroidery. While it is not nearly as in-depth as the now out-of-print Color and Fiber, it is also more accessible. It is also not as specific as Mary Fry's Color for Needlework, but it provides a good, solid ground for a stitcher's exploration of color.
Almost half the book is made up of color tools, including palettes of each of twelve hue, ranging from fully saturated hues to extremely muted tones and shades. A Color Wheel and Value Scale are also provide. A series of templates has holes cut out to be used in conjunction with the color wheel to find color combinations.
The seven chapters of the book cover all the major topics in color
studies. There are chapters on color relationships, value,
contrasts, and harmonies. Each sub-topic within the chapters is
given s page of text. Next to it are nine samples in various media
showing the principle discussed. These examples use the same design from page to page, varying only in the color used. As much as anything, this gives graphic demonstration of the topics and will fuel stitchers' imaginations.
The last two chapters apply color to specific media. The sixth
chapter discusses the characteristics of media in relation to color. Most folks know that shiny surfaces look lighter than matte surfaces, but how does this apply to knitting yarn or beads. Knowing something of the characteristics of yarns before you shop will help you in making choices. The final chapter, shows how a color scheme is developed in each of the nine crafts used in the book. Paper scraps show the basic colors involved while the text outlines the color harmony used as well as the specific colors. A value scale on paper is included and samples of the media used are also included in the illustration.
This book provides just enough information on color to get a
craftsperson started with this exciting topic. Unlike many books on color, this book doesn't talk about mixing colors, since these
materials are all discreet. But it should be considered a starting point for color exploration, not a complete book.
color color everywhere.......2007-03-29
A very good reference book for the novice and the experienced textiler. We all have colors that we like but this book does a good job of illustrating why you need to stretch your horizons from time to time.
Excellent buy.......2007-03-06
This is by far the best colour book I have ever seen. I have read it from cover to cover and now posses a far greater understanding of colour. This book should be on every crafters shelf as a classic text book. Highly recommended.
User Friendly Guide of Color Theory.......2007-01-23
Color theory can be difficult to understand let alone put to use. This book not only explains color theory in an easy to follow manner but also includes photographs of samples in 9 different craft areas to illustrate each topic. The samples include knitting, quilting, beading, paper and weaving. Each medium adds it own twist to the "rules" so seeing an example is worth a thousand words. The portion on value is very good as the role of a colors value is often overlooked. The value principles are also illustrated with real materials. The color wheel and color chips helps one put all the information to use. This book is both a guide and a tool.
Useful and fabulous.......2007-01-05
As a spinner, weaver, knitter and fiber dyer occasionally who uses color all the time, I found this book very useful and well presented and easy to work with. I bought two, just so I could loan one to friends and have my own to consult and study. I highly recommend this book.

Adorable Hares.......2007-01-09
I bought this item for my baby nephew to give along with the "Guess How Much I Love You" book and pajamas. It was adorable, soft, and cuddly, and even my brother--a "man's man"--said it was "cute."
Product ShippingReview.......2007-01-06
I would love to review the actual product itself however, I am unable to do so as the product was never delivered. I ordered it as a gift for my sister who lives in Canada. I was assured shipment to Canada was possible. When the product did not arrive after 4 weeks I contacted Amazon. They could not locate the product. They agreed to resend the product. Again after 4 weeks the product did not arrive and Amazon could not locate it. At this Amazon offered to refund the product and I took them up on the offer. This is not a review then but rather a warning about purchasing this product for shipment to an address from a country other than the US.
A precious gift.......2006-03-16
I bought several of these as gifts, for my grandchildren and some friends. Better with the book added to the package. The hares enhance the impact of the story! You will be getting a great gift for anyone you choose to buy for!
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous publication........1999-12-09
This well researched photo essay on Paul Outerbridge is a wonderful addition to the pictorial history of the art. Elaine Dines-Cox does a marvelous job placing Outerbridge in an artistic context. Outerbridge draws from Cubism, New Objectiviity and Surrealism and translates them into his own visual language. She speaks not only of his art but the processes he used. An entire chapter is extracted from an Outerbridge publication from 1940 describing the Carbo process.
Dines-Cox book is beautifully oversized to bring to full advantage the magnificent work of this master. Outerbridge mastered both black and white and color during his lifetime. His life is briefly sketched but this book is not intended as a biography but rather as a homage to a great master.
Outbridge's name is not as well known as Adams, Weston, Cunningham, Brassai or Kertesz but as an artist he ranks with the best. Recent auctions of his work have fetched incredible sums.
While other great artists have innumerable books to their credit I have only come across two other publications on Outerbridge and they were both small paperbacks with inferior reproductions. With but one photograph per page this is one of the handsomest publications in years.
