Book Description
A former Reagan White House Counsel presents a comprehensive picture of Ronald Reagan, focusing on how his distinctive leadership style was the source of both his setbacks and his success.
An icon of the twentieth century, Ronald Reagan has earned a place among the most popular and successful U.S. presidents. In this compelling firsthand account of Reagan's presidency, Peter J. Wallison, former White House Counsel to President Reagan, argues that Reagan took office with a fully developed public philosophy and strategy for governing that was unique among modern presidents. "I am not a great man," Reagan once said, "just committed to great ideas."
Wallison shows how Reagan's unyielding attachment to certain key ideas--communicated through his speeches--created a cohesive administration and revived the spirit of the nation. In Ronald Reagan, Wallison describes what it was like to be on Reagan's White House staff and how Reagan's attachment to principle produced both the best and worst days of his presidency. Updated with a new epilogue.

Behind the scenes of Reagan Administration........2007-04-23
This book is based on Peter Wallison's year in the White House when he served as a legal counsel.
This book shares some of Ronald Reagan's wit, humor, and humility.
Mr.Wallison offers an assessment of the media coverage regarding the Reagan administration. The media had a tendency to over-cover the sensational while ignoring subjects of substance, like policy(foreign or domestic). They trolled for scandals.
This book shows what management style was used by the President.
It also debuncts the myth that President Reagan was not intelligent.
Another interesting topic in this book is the behind the scenes view of situations in the cabinet. Leaks to the media and how rampant they were from the White House and especially the Hill.
There was a comparison of the Chiefs of Staff. Mr. Wallison wrote mostly about Donald Regan because he worked with him.
The chapters dedicated to the Iran-Contra scandal were very good! I came away with a better understanding of exactly what happened and who was involved.
This is the first book that I have read about President Reagan. I recommend it as a balanced book from an author who worked in the White House. I wish that he had been there longer!
A true American Conservative Leader.......2003-12-24
I love this book as it contains what it means to be a true conservative and not a false one. As the great Conservative economist F.A. Hayek once stated " . . . the whole conception of social or distributive justice is empty and meaningless; and there will therefore never exist agreement on what is just in this sense... I am certain, however, that nothing has done so much to destroy the juridical safeguards of individual freedom as the striving after this mirage of social justice."
That is in a Capitalistic Socieity there will be more losers than winners and that is just the way it is. If you can not make ends meet it is not "societys fault" but your own. Don't expect your mommy "the state" to make it right!
From here the author goes own to explain how all the scandals of the Reagan presidentcy where not the leaders fault but those of his underlings for they were to blaime not him. The buck stops there my friend!
An Excellent Read.......2003-03-08
This is an excellent "insider" perspective on Reagan's management style and the Iran-Contra scandal. Wallison debunks thoroughly the prevailing view of the liberal media that Reagan was intellectually limited, disengaged and manipulated by his advisors. Reagan's remarkable accomplishments are attributed to the clarity of and his unfailing focus on a few "big ideas" (e.g. a smaller and less intrusive government, freer trade, a strong defense, faith in the traditional American values of individualism and sense of personal responsibility) and his ability to inspire those within the administration to actively pursue his policy objectives. As legal counsel to the President, Wallison was the White House staffer most involved with Iran-Contra. He persuasively argues that the scandal was basically a foreign policy blunder made worse by a renegade NSC staff (particularly Oliver North) and a press corps more interested in scandal mongering than issues.

Book Description
Facing cancer is a life-changing event, one that prompts soul-searching and a reevaluation of all that one holds to be true. In the years following their own cancer treatments, authors Elena Dorfman and Heidi Schultz Adams were left wondering, What difference has cancer made in other people's lives? What does it mean to survive a life-threatening illness? In Here and Now, Dorfman and Adams offer photographic portraits and personal stories of 38 people -- of all ages and from all walks of life -- who have confronted cancer at some point in their lives. Their stories explore both the universal questions raised by a cancer diagnosis, and how their unique answers to those questions shaped each survivor into who they are today. Here and Now is a beautiful volume that will provide comfort and insight to everyone from the recently diagnosed to the 20-year survivor, eloquently demonstrating how seemingly insurmountable adversity can bring forth surprising courage and strength, both in us and those around us.

Another survival story.......2005-01-28
If you are looking for another most inspirational story about a cancer survivor, read Tapestry: The Journey of Laurel Lee. CBS turned her hospital journal into a movie several years ago. Tapestry is her entire life story - it is filled with laughter, tears, hope and grace.
Telling It Like It Is........2003-10-02
I am a cancer survivor and a personal coach for cancer survivors (rle444@yahoo.com). I have recommended this book to all of my clients. The stories tell it like it is: the good, bad and ugly. It's so important for current cancer patients to see the possibilites through the angst of having cancer and cancer survivors to have examples of the various tribulations and exhilaration of "cancer after life." cancer (little "c") is what you have, not who you are. I thank the authors for this beautiful and powerful evidence of the human spirit.
Read this book.......2002-09-10
Everything the earlier revieiwers have said is true. This book inspired me to live my life more fully. You do not need to be a cancer survivor to be touched by these stories. They are stories about being human, and being ALIVE.
A welcome Honesty.......2002-05-22
What characterizes this book is its intellectual and emotional honesty, and in that spirit, this reviewer acknowledges he knows one of the authors.
The book tells the stories of 38 cancer survivors-38 very different individuals with very different stories to tell about how they first learned of their cancer, how they coped with it, how it changed their lives, how they face the world now.
There is no false sentimentality, there's no polyanna, no posing. This is truth, not always pretty, but real. The two authors, themselves cancer survivors, have produced something that is greater than the sum of its 38 brief narratives. There is a powerful cumulative impact on the reader that lingers.
What I was left with was a recognition that all of the very intense personal experiences these people had, making each one of them so very special, ultimately makes them very ordinary, just like you and me. And the scary, diagnostic names of their cancers also become strangely ordinary in their hideousness.
These survivors tell us about themselves very simply; they demystify themselves. And they demystify the pathology of cancer. Ultimately the reader gets to see beyond the emotional fall-out of confronting cancer--the fears, the feelings of hurt and unfairness, of rejection, of loneliness, and so many more.
This is a fine book. I'm sure it will have special meaning for both cancer survivors and cancer victims alike. But just as importantly, for many of us who are neither of these, it also helps us better understand ourselves. "The proper study of mankind is man," said Alexander Pope. You might adapt that truism to the study of mankind through this book.
Not just for Cancer Survivors.......2002-05-21
This book is a collection of uplifting stories about the strength of the human spirit. From the introduction to the last account, I couldn't put the book down--it's something that has to be read in one sitting. And, I am not a cancer survivor, just someone who enjoys good writing and thought-provoking subjects. This book will make you think and stay with you for a long time.
The photography, as well, is incredibly good.
Read it and pass it on to everyone you know!

Book Description
Starting with the basics, From Needles to Hook provides the clues to solving the mystery of changing knit pattern stitches to crochet. Each chapter guides you from one step of the process to the next.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT BOOK FOR KNITTERS AND CROCHETER'S!!!.......2006-08-03
This book has it all, I was Pleasantly surprised when I purchased this book, at the Ease in Instructions, for both Knitting and Crochet Patterns, especially the crochet Lace, cables, and intricate patterns that only existed for knitters once. Here they are shown side-by-side, one column in the knitted instructions and one column in crochet. It is a very well put together book, with MANY GREAT PATTERNS!! WELL WORTH THE PRICE!!! GREAT BOOK!!!
No, it isn't.......2006-07-10
This is just a book of crochet patterns that mimic knit stitches and there are plenty of other more interesting crochet pattern books than this one on which to spend your money.
Misleading Title.......2006-04-13
I bought this book because I believed the title. I thought the book would explain how to convert a knit pattern into a crochet pattern so you'd have the same size/gauge and a similar weight fabric. Instead, I was given a lot of crochet patterns that imitated the look of knit stitches but were of very different fabric weight. If you want a lot of new crochet patterns (albeit not very exciting ones), this is a good book for you. But if you're truly looking for a method by which you can crochet something using a knit pattern, this book is not helpful at all. On the other hand, the book does include some helpful hints on yarn substitutions and correlations between crochet hook and knitting needle sizes. After buying this book I realized that if I want a fabric that looks and drapes like knitted fabric, I'd have to learn to knit--something I had not been successful at, because I am so used to crocheting. So I decided I'd teach myself to knit my OWN way, carrying the yarn in my left hand and weilding the right knitting needle as if it were a hook, rather than manipulating the yarn around the needle, the way most "how-to" books instruct (after I taught myself this "new" method, I found out it is Continental Style knitting--as opposed to the more common British or American style). Now that I can knit and am very familiar with the construction of knit vs crochet stitches, I understand that you can't really duplicate the drape and weight of knitted fabric using a crochet hook, and this book is a waste of money if that's what you're hoping to do.
Converting Knit to Crochet.......2006-02-23
Outstanding! I love it! Instead of attempting to make my own patterns, I now have a simple crochet patterns.
Save your money........2005-06-24
If you already understand concepts such as gauge, spend your $25 elsewhere. How do you convert knit patterns to crochet? Well, apparently, you take the measurements from the knit pattern and crochet something that looks the same. That is all the book tells you. As others have said, there aren't step-by-step directions, as the title implies. Instead buy a good crochet stitch guide, and convert the patterns on your own, because it all boils down to something that looks similar.

"Up the Duff" The Australian version.......2007-04-13
A funny look at pregnancy week by week.
What I liked most about this book was that each week gave a measurement of the baby and what part of the baby was developing week by week.
If you are person who likes alot of "medical type" information, this book is not for you. But if you feel bombarded by medical texts and like the bare facts, this is your book.
I found the diary a bit tedious, and didn't read much of it.
I thought I'd love it but I was wrong.......2007-01-03
I really looked forward to this book.
I thought I'd enjoy the humour in it as well as learn a few things.
Essentially I find the general attitude of the author as very negative....the author must've really hated finding out she was pregnant/being pregnant and then having the baby.
There are a few giggly bits in it but certainly nothing to rave about.
As for information it's sparse, most of what it contains I've gotten from my monthly pregnancy magazine subscription.
Bad information in this book........2006-12-14
This book should get zero stars because the author makes false statements. She claims that a vegan diet is not adequate for a developing fetus. This is completely false and the author should not be making statements that cannot be backed by proof. I would seriously question her ability to offer any legitimate information on pregnancy. Not only have women successfully completed their entire pregnancy on a 100% vegan diet, but people are also raising incredibly healthy vegan children. I myself am vegan (30 weeks pregnant) and am having an incredibly successful pregnancy. My prenatal care provider is extremely happy with my progress as well as the baby's progress. Frankly, it is said that a book can be published with such false and misleading information.
Feels like you're talking to your best girlfriend!!.......2006-11-19
My husband and I have been talking about getting pregnant and preparing ourselves (only as much as books can provide, lol) for about 6 months.
We read tons of books filled with medical information (very helpful) and some that scared me with hundreds of things that can go wrong or books saying I "HAVE" to do it like this or the author heavily pushing their own views. Until I can across this book. Yes, it doesn't cover all medical conditions but it doesn't pretend to. It has alot of references, to other books and websites, thoroughout the book including a section in the back. Mostly, it tells of the writers' personal experience using humourous and honest writing. I felt like I was talking to my best friend who has actually been through it. It made me feel more comfortable. Not less scared but I have a more positive image of pregnancy, instead of being super terrified. The author has a great way of making you feel like, 'hey, this has happened to me but you can laugh about it' or when it's more serious, she writes about it and gives references. So many other books make you feel bad or inadequete. This one doesn't. It doesn't talk down to you or make you feel stupid. It is a good read for anyone who needs a good friend that may share the same feelings you have. It is definately a good read for the modern woman. I can't tell you how many times my friends said, "Hey, I was thinking that too!" or "You tell 'em girl!". Some aren't even pregnant and just like the fun read, lol! After having so many people offer their own advice on pregnancy, it was great to have someone talk to you like a person or offer suggestions. And not craming it down your throat. No, it cannot be the only pregnancy book I read, it's too basic, but I highly recommend for anyone who needs to know that someone else is also feeling the same way. Or just laugh a little. Read it in between the "serious" pregnancy books, it'll put a smile on your face.
The Australian Version is better!!.......2006-09-06
Up the Duff- the Australian version of this book is soooo much better!!! I fell IN LOVE with Up the Duff when I borrowed it from a friend and decided it would become my standard pre-pregnancy gift. I bought 5 copies of the American version, A Bun in the Oven, and returned all of them once I read the first chapter and skimmed the rest. Instead I ordered the original from an Australian bookstore. The humor just wasn't the same once the publisher had rewritten it for an American audience. The Australian version does deserve 5 stars (if not better- it is brilliant)!
