Ok, but there are better guides.......2007-05-18
I bought this book because we are planning a trip to Munich and will be taking daytrips by car almost everyday. This book does not go into great detail about anything. There are several driving tours that last 2-3 days, however, no mention of how much time to expect spending in each location. Almost every driving tour does not start from a base city like Munich, Frankfurt, or Berlin either (like most people would start from and want to return to). I would rather recommend Earl Steinbicker's Daytrips Germany. That is a great book and gives you vital information about each location.

Excellent guide to seeing Germany with a sports car or a BMW motorcycle. You will enjoy some great driving tours and routes through this historical region of Deutschland.
Frommers has recently come out with more "Best-Loved Driving Tours" series ... guides that are not very inexpensive, but are very well researched and quite comprehensive. One will have plenty of driving tours and routes to chose from, whether you like arts and museums, scenic roads and breathtaking views, urban towns and shopping, or just want to experience a regione's culture and life.
Unlike the other Frommer guides that are fatter and heavier, this little book gives you not too many specifics on lodging or eating. It is geared strictly for the person behind the wheel and her or his passengers.
I have had a great experience using this guide and will recommend it to anyone who can afford it. Also, you might want to check to see if your library carries it and check it out for the duration of your visit abroad.
When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).

This book has lovely photos and some good suggestions for driving to places not listed in every guidebook. It also talks a bit about the various towns and cities along the routes, which makes it easier not to miss something that you otherwise would not have known about. And descriptions do not start out in the center of each town, by the train station, very useful if you are driving, rather than traveling by train. However, the actual driving directions themselves are a bit sparse - you need a good recent map of Germany to accompany the book. And there are no suggestions in this book for places to stay or to eat - unfortunate - as sometimes the book takes you to off the beaten path locales, and suggestions on where to grab a bite or a bed would be helpful.
A better planning book than guide book.......2000-10-22
I've just returned from my first trip to Germany, and the Best-Loved Driving Tours was among the three books I toted along. This book was an excellent tool for planning our trip -- the photos are beautiful, and the tour layout helped us figure out where we should go and what might be worth seeing. Its short descriptions of each stop helped us grasp what a place was about, and as a result we budgeted about the right amount of time for each stop.
As a tour book to take along, though, it's not nearly as helpful. On the plus side, it's the only book I encountered that imagines you might actually be *driving* through Germany (the rest of them start describing a city beginning with the train station, with no clue for car drivers on how to get downtown). Also, most of the other books don't quite grasp that you might explore outside the big cities; this one does just the opposite, which I appreciated. However, the directions from place to place are a bit sparse, and it provides almost no useful information about lodging or dining.
This is a good guide book. But don't let it be the only one you carry.

My wife and I know Germany pretty well, but this guide was an excellent addition for our next trip there. It is very upbeat and informative, with just the right amount of detail.

I received the book two weeks ago and finished it in four days. This is a well written, very informative insight into the life of Dr. Shabazz. She was a powerful woman, who did her best to protect her daughters from the evils of the world. Some might say that she sheltered them to much, but who can tell a mother that she's being overprotective of her babies? Against all odds she survived, her support system was outstanding, her vision was remarkable. I enjoyed every moment of this book.

This book is not only an informative and revealing biography of one of America's hero's, Dr. Betty Shabazz. This is also a historical biography of a remarkable woman. Most informative is the likeness and kinship many woman can identify with especially struggling mothers, aunts,and grandmothers who find themselves trying to raise young boys alone. Often without the assistance of fathers, grandfathers, and positve male role-models.
Hers not only is the story of being Mrs. Malcolm X, Dr. Betty Shabazz, but also tragically grandmother/mother/counselor to our often time rebellious and misunderstood young black males searching for their fathers and father figures.
But in the mist of this tragic situation her family can and must relish in the life of this remarkable, remarkable Queen Mother Betty.....
Mr. Rickford gives us just that in this important piece of literature.

If you're looking for information on the Kid.... This ain't it........2006-07-27
From having him grow up a Manhattan gangster to including false photos the author shows an astonishing lack of historical research, especially for a man who has supposedly "spent more than thirty-five years studying the life and times of Billy the Kid." Included is just about every myth ever made up about the Kid with a few new ones thrown in. His sources? Most of these stories don't list any which is funny considering how many professionals have written biographies on him without reporting these. The sources he does list seem pretty disreputable too. He blatantly dismisses the accounts of the people who knew him. There is one page where he lists five accounts of Billy as a boy told by people who knew him and dismisses them all as biased. Not one subject agrees with him except, apparently, the ones who were never interviewed and can't refute him.
His evidence that Billy stayed in New York City until he was fourteen and even committed a crime there is based entirely on the ill-kept census records of the time. There were thousands of McCarty's throughout the country and proving one of them to be the Kid is by now impossible. (Astonishingly enough he uses that same argument to prove that it couldn't possibly be the right McCarty family listed in Indianapolis as is the accepted history) He even has to change his and his mother's name to make it better fit his theory having her die before the record has her show up in Silver City.
Based upon this flimsy evidence he makes up a complete back-story. He even has him travel all the way back to New York from New Mexico simply so that he can tie him in with a murder there before rushing back to New Mexico again. Again it requires major stretching of the dates and a name change to attribute this to the Kid. If Billy had ever gone by the name of Michael, been 3-4 years older, worked as a tinsmith at any point, and never left New York City then this might seem a more plausible theory. All the newspaper article says is that Michael McCarty aged 20 killed a friend with a knife. No further proof that it is the same person as Billy is listed nor even exists. As he himself states, McCarty is not exactly an uncommon name.
This whole book, while fascinating, seems more a work of fiction than of fact. I'd recommend it as that if it weren't so boring and confusingly written. No doubt to hide the lack of any real substance. A real shame.
More Fiction than fact.......2000-01-10
Donal Cline clearly demonstrates his inability to distinguish fact from fiction. I find his book to be biased (towards the Murphy-Dolan faction), poorly researched (claiming that Billy the Kid was known as Michael McCarty), and his findings to be very questionable (presents evidence without veryfiable sources.)After reading this book I asked myself why did Cline write this book? He seems to not think to much of "Billy the Kid" so why write a book about him? Why not stick to your true passion and write a documentary about James Dolan and L.G. Murphy.
Accurate Bio of the Young Henry McCarty.......1999-04-02
This book is the most accurate that I have read concerning the earlier years of Billy, Starting with the arrival of his mother in New York City, fleeing the Irish Potato famine. I would recommend reading this important book along with the Billy book writen by Robert Utley, "Billy the Kid, A Short and Violent Life."

Barry Lopez is a top-notch naturalist, but his writing is more mystical than scientific. His musings on the thoughts and dreams of herons are glorious, and he brings out the divine in nature like few can. You will want to join him at riverside after reading this book. River Notes is a mix of profound observations of nature and provocative human stories, united by the river that flows through it all in flood and drought.

Mr. Der Ananian 'crafts' a winner. The book combines hilarious and honest memories of his youth that rang true with mine, despite the fact that I was never crafty, and I grew up in a different ethnic mixture. But he describes a little bit of life and alot of crafty creativity. For anyone who likes to create, for anyone who had a mother, and for anyone who likes to laugh while learning, this book will be a re-read book. I keep it handy and read from it all the time.

This is a totally fun little craft book, just not quiet what I was expecting. I was hoping for some more in depth DIY stuff. I love that the cross stitch is first in the book though!

I hate to give such a low rating but must admit I was dissappointed with this book.
My biggest complaint? As per the book's subtitle- "not you Granny's crafts"-one would intimate that this is a craft book. Not so.
There are about 8 projects in the entire book-most of the book is actually more of a journal of the "avant crafters" who contribute to the book. Backgrounds of their lives and why they craft outside the box.
While that was somewhat interesting-it's not what I bought the book for. If I wanted to read crafters journals I could peruse the hundreds of blogs online for free.
I'm hoping the artists in this book will consider putting out another book-this time chock filled with the unusual craft projects that should have been in this book and were not.
If you are looking for unusual craft projects-I'd sadly suggest you skip this book and check out free websites like craftster.
the packaging was better than the content.......2006-10-12
This is a well put together and entertaining book, but many of the projects werent anything illuminating-- a cross stitch pattern, or how to make soap-- some were the first I'd seen-- making bracelets out of colored vinyl records, but required some specialized tools (and colored vinyl) that wouldnt be that easy to get, or worth the money for future endeavors. Get this from the library before you buy it, as there arent really that many amazing projects in it. If you like the ones you see, then invest in the book.

Great Aquatic Plant ID Book.......2006-11-04
There isn't a better picture book of aquarium plant species anywhere. The photos are large (mostly life-size), clear, and the plants evenly lit. A key gives basic information and notes whether the photo is of emersed- or submersed-form growth. The plants were provided by the largest aquarium plant grower in the U.S., so the book isn't burdened with species you never find in stores, and can't possibly order.
There is a short chapter on plant care at the front of the book, but it's made a bit annoying because there are four versions of each page-- one for each of four different languages. But don't buy this book for the information. (Get Kasselmann's _Aquarium Plants_ for that.) Buy it for the photos. You won't regret it. The book will help you decide which plants to buy and ID ones you already have.

dont expect alot in terms of care guides, as they are brief and already, somwhat dated (eg, tepot indicates that metal halides are the only way to light planted tanks: simply not true). but it has an exalent encyclopdia of both true aquatic and terrestrial plants often sold as aquatic. again, its a good referance.

Don't buy this book!Yes there are pictures..good ones at that but besides the names of the plants you know nothing about the plant. It would be well and good as a coffee table coaster and an expensive one at that.

If you are a beginner, and are looking for a very simple, quick, basic plant identification guide, this MAY be the book for you. However, for the price, I personally would want a bit more for my money.
The information in the book is oversimplified to a fault and some of it is inaccurate. While the photography is very good, the masking done to the photos is very poor - you can actually see where they were clipped out of the background in many of the photos - an unexcusable oversight for a publication whose only real strength IS the photography.
If the quality of the photoediting was sufficient, I would be willing to recommend the book - even at the expense of poor content - for those looking for a pretty "coffee-table" type book (which unfortunately is what so many publications in this hobby ultimately end up amounting to). However, due to the poor masking, I don't feel it even measures up to those superficial standards.
This book was meant to be an ID guide, and it IS good for helping the beginner aquatic plant enthusiast identify the more common types of aquatic plants. I just do not think that you are getting a good deal for your money.

If you are one of those parents (like me) who is tired of buying expensive plastic toys that require batteries and teach a single "skill", this book is for you. The author has a lot of excellent ideas of how to promote creativity and learning in your toddler with activities that employ simple, household items (like paper towel rolls) and inexpensive, basic toys (like balls and sand pails). Studies have shown that children learn better from these types of activities (where they are active) than the flashing, beeping toys (where they mostly watch and press buttons) and I love the idea of using simple items that are not bad for the environment as toys. We have had a lot of fun trying these out with our toddler, although, of course, not all of the activities are appropriate for all ages. On that note-- my only warning is that some of the activities use small pieces or items dangerous to a very young toddler, so parents will have to use common sense.
SUPER Ideas for Parents!.......2006-03-09
I wish I could give this book six stars instead of five! I have a 22-month-old daughter and wanted to find new, creative ways to interact with her while also teaching her important skills. I discovered this book while browsing on Amazon one day and was thrilled at the various, numerous ideas it offers! Best of all, you don't have to buy special materials to do most of these activities; they require simple objects you probably already have in your home. For instance, Miller provides recipes for homemade fingerpaint, shares instructions on how to make shape-matching games, and tells how to create a picture file to expand a child's understanding of categories. This book is a must-read for parents who want to stimulate their toddler's mind!

I found this gem at the library, now I'm going to buy a copy for myself! There are so many great ideas in here! I've read other books on the subject but haven't been very impressed. These ideas are practical, inexpensive, and clever. It includes recipes for things like playdough, and instructions for making your own affordable alternatives. Karen Miller had spent over twenty years in the business when this was written and it really shows in this wonderful, thoughtful book.

This book and its sequel "More Things to do with Toddler and Twos" are full of great ideas for playing with and teaching young children (18 mos-3yrs). Most ideas are inexpensive and can be practiced with items around the house.

Read Karen Miller's first book instead.......2006-03-09
While I agree with the first reviewer that author Karen Miller offers creative ideas on ways to interact with children, I believe this particular book is targeted mostly to teachers in a preschool setting - which is disappointing because I am simply a parent, not a preschool teacher. I wanted a book of activities I could do with my own children at home, not ways to decorate a classroom or how to get toddlers to interact with several of their peers. Sadly, the few ideas in this book that would work for parents are simply repeats of ideas already presented in Miller's first book, Things to Do with Toddlers and Twos. That said, I highly recommend her first book! I read both of them and found myself highlighting almost every activity in the first, while I ended up only skimming through the second. In Miller's first book, activites can be used by parents AND teachers, thus making it a more valuable resource for anyone wanting to engage toddlers in creative, hands-on activities.
Wonderful and creative ideas to encourage child development.......2000-06-29
This book is full of wonderful creative ideas that might never occur to you. So many of this kind of book are comprised largely of things you already do with your child or that are so obvious its not helpful. This book is written from a child development perspective and covers all the basics, from suggestions on ways you might set up your toddlers room to maximize imaginative play, to fun activities that encourage language development. We also have the first book Things to do with Toddlers and Twos which is good, but this book is even better.
