                        Book Description

As a young speechwriter in the Reagan White House, Peter Robinson was responsible for the celebrated "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech. He was also one of a core group of writers who became informal experts on Reagan -- watching his every move, absorbing not just his political positions, but his personality, manner, and the way he carried himself. In How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life, Robinson draws on journal entries from his days at the White House, as well as interviews with those who knew the president best, to reveal ten life lessons he learned from the fortieth president -- a great yet ordinary man who touched the individuals around him as surely as he did his millions of admirers around the world.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars inspiring.......2007-06-12

Inspirational words from the Reagan White House speechwriter who wrote the "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech, which was the ammo by which Ronald Reagan defeated Communism without a shot.
In addition to being inspiring, this book paints a good picture of what it's like if your first real job out of college is putting words in the mouth of the leader of the free world.

                        5 out of 5 stars MSchuerer.......2007-06-08

Superior insight into the mind of Reagan and the lessons he is still teaching all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Great insiders account.......2007-01-09

The author does a great job of taking you inside the white house and Reagan's life. This book provides great insight on how Reagan did what he did with such ease and then applies his principles to his own life.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all Americans.......2006-10-27

Intellectually honest. Thought provoking. A book that will make you yearn for a return to true leadership in government.

News personalities will usually condemn a person of Ronald Reagan's character when given the opportunity. But time and histroy are the ultimate judge of one's impact upon the world around them. Now, nearly 20 years removed from Reagan's exit from office, this book gives us a little insight into the man in the oval office.

Politics and leadership don't have to be complicated. They can be simple. Read this book. You'll be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars Very personal, but somewhat lacking.......2006-04-24

I have nothing but respect for Mr. Robinson and his writing ability. The portrayal of his service to the Reagan administration was accurate and entertaining, but those who are looking for a biography of Ronald Reagan may be mildly disappointed. While Mr. Robinson provides a wealth of anecdotal descriptions of his years with Reagan, it is more of an autobiography than an account of Reagan's impact on his life and America in general. It is a good read, but not as fulfilling as advertised.

An all-in-one guide designed for northern-tier gardens from coast to coast

Growing Shrubs and Trees in Cold Climates provides northern-tier gardeners from coast to coast with an incredible range of choices, no matter what their skill level.

Part I profiles 50 plant groups best suited to gardens in zones 1 to 5. Each plant has been tested for hardiness over a period of at least 10 years--and has proved hardy to no less than -30 degrees F. Readers will easily be able to select shrubs and trees that produce wonderful fragrant flowers and those that bloom more than once in the spring and summer seasons.

Part 2 covers the basics of growing shrubs and small trees, with special attention on solving problems that occur in cooler climates.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource For Cold Climates!.......2004-08-10

I have had this book for a few years now and used it extensively. I am in north central Iowa, zone 4, and this book has helped me to choose shrubs and small trees that can withstand my extremely bitter cold winters. What I love about this book is there are many photos, many nursery resources listed, and it is full of very valuable information.

If you are gardening/landscaping in a cold climate and need to know which cultivar's can survive in zone 4 or 3 or 2 then you need to have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and superbly illustrated.......2004-07-20

How wonderful to have a book that provides the level of detail made available here for those of us who shiver through our winters and worry about whether the new additions to the garden are as hardy as the garden center promised.

The details? Everything from pronunciation to names of various suppliers. How to plant, feed and prune and informed odds about whether a particular plant will survive transplanting. Plants aren't merely promised to be hardy; charts give the specific temperature to which varieties will survive. The charts also show information about flower color and fruit, the plant's anticipated size, and comments about the variety's assets and liabilities for the home gardener.

Photographs are large enough to show detail and convey actual information: aspects of a particular plant or its appearance in different seasons, and variables among varieties.

This is a fine book and, in my view, unusual in that it is certainly well worth its sticker price. It is organized like an encyclopedia, notwithstanding some useful material in chapters outside the alphabetized plant list. As such, it does not have an index -- which might be useful -- and some of the text can be recursive. But these are minor flaws in an outstandingly useful and beautifully published book.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful and helpful information.......2003-07-02

This book has been more helpful to us in many different areas. It explains everything from how and when to prune to how and when to fertilize. It shows both common name and scientific name in the table of contents to quickly find what you're looking for. If you are looking for a book that explains how to take care of everything available in the cold northeast, this is the book for you. Gardeners can't go wrong with this book.

Not only is this book the best reference, but the only one that gives novices as well as the advanced growers the information on growing healthy roses in the colder zones. It classifies the different types of roses that can be grown well, how to plant them, prune them, maintain them, select them and where to buy them. If non-hardy hybrid teas are your choice, it has excellent pictures giving the step-by-step method of tipping roses for winter protection. Roses hardy for the north are all listed - the old garden roses up to the newly hybridized Canadian hardy roses. Anyone wanting to grow roses in the north needs this excellent reference!

5 out of 5 stars If you live in the north you have to have this book!.......2000-05-25

The most valuable part of this book is the section that rates each rose. It gives a 1-5 star rating and a detailed description of the characteristics of that plant. It tells you why it deserved 5 stars or what is wrong with the rose so it didn't earn 5 stars! The other part of this book gives detailed and easy to understand tips on how to plant, feed, and protect your roses. The pictures are excellent and this is a hard book to put down. The author is obviously a lover of roses and not just a horticulturist!

Millions of gifted children with average, above-average, or even gifted abilities--including those from homes where education is valued--simply do not perform up to their capabilities. This is what Dr. Sylvia Rimm terms underachievement syndrome.

Now Dr. Rimm offers desperately needed help for parents of underachieving children. Drawing on both clinical research and years of experience counseling families, she has developed a "Trifocal Model" to help parents and teachers work together to get students back on track. It is effective for both average and gifted students, from preschool through college. Dr. Rimm spells out a practical, six-step program that really works. If you are the parent or teacher of an underachiever, don't give up--get this book.

This book gives insight to why some kids are underachievers and gives some practical problem solving techniques, like have your child study alone in a quiet spot. I used to hover over my daughter until she was done with her work, creating more distractions for her. Not any more. Dr. Rimm has cured me. This is simple, but worth the effort. She also walks you through what to do with dominant nonconforming children. She explains how they gain power (often through arguing) and gives some counter-intuitive advice on dealing with these kids.

The sooner you get this book the better. There are some very simple strategies that help children succeed in school that are more effective the earlier you use them. She includes a six step program that parents can use in cooperation with the school along with the practical parenting tips that are included. I started using some of the techniques and eliminated some of my bad habits with my 10 year old and I can see the difference in her level of motivation already.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Rimm is right on target.......2006-03-21

I bought this book after reading several others, searching for answers to our son's school problems. After considering everything from switching schools to home schooling him or even repeating a grade, I read this book and found all the answers I needed. He was underacheiving, and Dr. Rimm's description was right on. After following all her advice, and more importantly sticking with it, we now have a bright son who, in his own words, "cares about school."

Dr. Rimm seems to really understand what happens in the mind of the underacheiver. Her vast experience and her effective program were a blessing for us, and we are indebted to her. We now have a much happier household, and a brighter outlook for our son's success in school and in life.

If you read this book and you see your child within its pages, follow all the steps, and stick with it, even when you want to give up. I thought we couldn't change him, but luckily I was wrong!

Sylvia Rimm has some interesting and apt characterizations of underachieving students.

However, we tried many of her techniques -- with a child who is a staunch perfectionist who thinks that all grades less than perfection are the same -- it's all or nothing -- and the techniques did not bring us success.

I would attribute the lack of success to Dr. Rimm's seeming lack of understanding of boys. She doesn't address fully the issues that boys face in competitive academic environments.

Be careful with this book. It promised more than it delivered with us.

5 out of 5 stars A practical guide to happy, productive children.......2001-11-20

Dr. Rimm's book applies to all kinds of children -- above average, below average, and "just plain normal" kids -- and, while it's targeted towards parents and teachers of children who are currently underacheiving, it can actually be helpful to teachers and parents even if you don't see any major problems with your children.

I was in the administration at a private school for bright and highly motivated students, and I can't tell you how many times I turned the page in this book, jerked to attention, and said, "Exactly! It's the fourth grade boy whose mom..." or "That's the certified teacher whose M.A. in education and 18 years' classroom experience doesn't stop her from telling her own girls..." or even "That explains why I hated the 'fun' Gifted and Talented program in sixth grade!"

I found Dr. Rimm's approach straightforward and practical; no suggestion in the book is controversial or tending to the dramatic.

The book is organized by personality type and age so you can customize the approach to your own situation. She has clear suggestions for enrolling staff assistance and dealing with divorced/blended family issues.

Her writing is credibly reinforced by research and her own clinical practice.

I was particularly impressed with her sections on "Yes-No parenting" and ADD/ADHD kids. If your child is a "late-developing" or "borderline" ADD student (or if you just want to keep him or her off Ritalin), then you need to read this book for the simplest, clearest explanataion of what you can do right now.

However, my professional experience has taught me that a few parents (and teachers) are emotionally attached to their own, occasionally extreme "philosophy" about children, so let me add a few words for them:

In my own office, I have seen well-educated, loving parents choose their "philosophy" over time-tested, research-supported, developmentally appropriate methods of dealing with children. Usually, these people are parenting out of their own emotional wounds. In my experience, their children are much more likely to develop severe emotional and attention problems.

This is for these parents: The basic reality of life is that YOUR actions affect the outcome. If YOU want a DIFFERENT outcome, then YOU need to try DIFFERENT actions.

If your children are underacheiving, defiant, needy, controlling, or attention-dependent, you MAY have to make a choice between keeping your philosophy and having confident, productive children.

This may be a hard decision to make, especially if your philosophy is driven by still-raw wounds from your own childhood or recent traumas. And there are substantial consequences for your decision.

If you're committed to your philosophy, or if you are parenting out of your emotional wounds, then you probably won't LIKE this book until you resolve your own emotional trauma.

But when you're ready to try something that works, get this book -- it can help you develop a stable, happy, confident, effective child.

5 out of 5 stars This book can change your life.......2001-09-09

My daughter's first semester in high school was torture for her and for us (her parents) until I discovered this book. There is so much a well-meaning parent can do wrong without knowing it, and this book really helped. Dr. Rimm helps you to first make the correct diagnosis, then suggests steps to change the unhealthy behaviors. I recommend this book to any one of my friends who says, "My son/daughter just isn't getting the grades I know he/she is capable of".

The best full-scale biography of this intellectually restless, deeply committed artist.

As the Washington Post says, "Dore Ashton brings the reader to the very core of Mark Rothko's art." She draws on her countless interviews with the artist--giving little credence to the false mythology surrounding his work--to take us to the heart of Rothko's painting, showing its derivation from his reading, travel, and thought.

The definitive book on Mark Rothko's work, by one of his closest friends. Ashton gets as close as she can to a very elusive, contradictory person. The book requires the same kind of sublime imagination that Rothko's paintings - his "children," as he often called them - require. Those without soul should pass this book by.

Seriously I did. The first time I saw a Rothko painting was at the SFMoMA. It covered an entire wall of the room and was the biggest thing on canvas I have ever seen. I was hoping that Dore Ashton's book would give me an insight into the meaning and style of Rothko, but rather, it seemed to be a biography of the man rather than a critism of the work. I suppose that's partially my fault since I'm sure there quite a bit of art critism books out there on Rothko...unfortunately, the historical presentation of the book isn't really all that interesting. I guess in the end, the big picture is that Rothko was deeply influenced by his Marxist experiences because that's what I got from Ashton's book. On a side note, Dore Ashton writes for Modern Painter magazine, which is actually a good magazine.

Out of two hundred plus pages here you will find a grand total of maybe two pages' worth of remarks that strike you by their precision, sensitivity, and depth of understanding of the work - that is until you realize that these are without exception quotes from the artist himself. Ashton herself seems to have nothing to say "about Rothko". Desperate to write a "big" and "important" book, she offers empty hyperbole in place of thoughtful analysis, coated in such convoluted, meaningless, and purely academic lingo that by page five reading the book becomes a painful chore not unlike having to clean the underside of a sanitation truck with a toothbrush. Frankly, I don't see how a manual on transmission repair could offer fewer insights into Rothko's painting.

I read the book in the eighties, when it was published-- I was attracted to the great photo of Rothko on the cover-- the book is a loving Rothko-like homage--cryptic, deep, serious-- the lack of irony is sometimes hard to take-- but adds a sense of the compelling-- I found myself reflecting upon it-- as one might reflect upon one of the paintings-- Ashton obviously loved her subject-- oh, she describes her meetings with Rothko-- in his later, financially secure period eating in an upper east side chinese restaurant-- a delight.

                                              Book Description

These studies by several eminent scholars mark the 800th anniversary of the move to Lincoln by Saint Hugh, who was bishop there from 1186 to 1200. One of the most remarkable personalities of twelfth-century England, he stood out as a man of force, principle, sanctity, and wit at a time when the rule of the Angevin kings was leading to the crisis of Magna Carta. The contributors examine how his life as bishop related to the ideals of the Carthusian Order to which he belonged; how he ruled his diocese; what kind of impact the phenomenon of his sanctity had on English political and social life; and how he was viewed and venerated in the period after his death.
