A wild, fascinating read..........2000-01-19
Danish investigative author Henrik Kruger set out to write a book about Christian David, a French criminal with a colorful past, and wound up writing a book that spans all continents and names names all the way up to Richard Nixon! The same names keep popping up here and in other books of its type, like Howard Hunt and other various CIA spooks and gangsters. A few of the characters have even been named in connection with the JFK assassination. This is not some bizarre conspiracy theory book, however, as everything is thorougly researched and annotated.
The basic premise is that the Nixon administration/CIA wanted to eliminate the old French Connection and replace it with heroin from the Golden Triangle, partly in order to help finance operations in Southeast Asia. He also goes into the relationships between French and US intelligence services and organized crime.
This is one of the most fascinating books I've ever read. In fact, I've read it three times, and wouldn't mind reading it again. Even if you don't buy the premise, it's very informative regarding the structure of French secret services.
Another good author in this same vein is Michael Levine, former DEA agent who quit in disgust after investigation after investigation was torpedoed by the CIA on the grounds of "national security".

"Little" Big Book.......2005-10-12
This book is small in height, but one of the largest information books on the specific subject of "fossil" fishes I have ever seen. You just have to hunt around in the index for the specific fish you are looking for...

One thousand pictures are worth..........2002-12-10
This is an incredible book about fish fossils from all around the world. The pictures are in full color and absolutely beautiful. What this books offers in photos, it lacks in information. The descriptions of the fishes often seem too short. I would have really like to have had a size range listed with each fish description. All that is mentioned on fish size is the actual size of each photographed specimen. This is nice, but it would have been nice to have more information. Also, it would have been nice if the book had been printed on bigger pages. The book is an incredible picture book of fossil fish and an interesting study in different types of fish, but not much beyond that. All in all, I am glad to have it.
Disappointing.......2001-11-27
The book is well produced and almost all of pictures in color.
However the small format, 5 x 7.5, makes it very difficult, if not impossible, to see details of the animal illustrated. In addition, there a number of fairly common fish from the U.S. not mentioned in the book.
a big picture book.......1999-10-11
The best part about this book are all the illustrations of fish you've never seen before. The text is often lame. If you're not into fossil fish and don't know why these fish are cool you may not like it that much.

Make It Simpler Paper Piecing - Anita Solomon .......2007-07-18
After a frustrating, actually terrible experience with a paper-pieced quilt top - swore off paper piecing - - UNTIL I saw Anita's technique on Simply Quilts - - I now own two of her books and am anxious to try paperpiecing again. Very talented lady!
I wish I could understand the instructions.......2006-10-23
I don't know if it's just me or what, but I have a hard time with the instructions, but I also haven't made anything in this book. I thought the author was providing a quicker way to construct blocks, but I didn't think so. It just looks like alot more time and work than what's necessary.
Very helpful tool.......2006-04-07
I enjoy looking through the book and getting ideas. I'm looking forward to using it in my next project.
Nice addition to my library.......2006-02-17
This is a nice addition to my quilt book library. LOTS of VERY detailed instructions to learn her paper piecing technique. My only issue with this book is the instructions are 100% for HER patterns & techniques. I'm just beginning paper peicing & I don't think I'll be able to adapt her techniques to my other patterns...I'll have to concentrate on instructions to attempt this. Or better yet, I think I'll find a basic paper piecing book. :)
Motivating.......2005-07-20
I found the book to be very inspiring, helpful, and best of all Motivating.

A How-To Book for Parenting Teens!.......2007-08-13
In today's complex world, it is harder and harder to know what to do to maintain better relationships with our teens as well as to guide them appropriately. This book is a must for anyone who finds themselves at a loss by the challenges of the teen years, especially given the changes in our contemporary lives.
A book and a philosophy admired by counselors in this area.......2007-07-05
The Love and Logic series has been greatly appreciated and used by a number of counselors in the southwest Missouri area. I find this book especially helpful not only for restructuring the behavior of one's own children, but for helping to create a win-win sitution for teenage students. It also makes a great gift for friends and family who are looking for new ways to lovingly outsmart.
Ann L. Allman, Ed.D.
excellant book.......2007-05-13
I have just started this book and am nearly done with the new edition of Parenting with love and logic. This book was recommended my my childs vice pricipal at school. It has been a big help. It isn't easy working with teens especially if the parent has been doing things differently most their lives and to try to retrain as a parent and also the child is hard work and persistance consistance is the name of the game! Always remember, it's NEVER too later to try something new.
Parenting Teens With Love And Logic.......2007-04-03
This book was very informative. The techniques the authors describe are effective, and easy to implement. The effort required is well worth it if you are truly interested in changing your teen's behavior.
The last chapter of the book contains what the authors describe as pearls. They are great dialog starters for tough subjects like sex drugs and money.
The only thing I would change about this book; is buying it thirty years earlier, when I raised my first teenager.
This book should be called "White Middle-Upper Class Christian Parenting with Love & Logic".......2007-03-21
Bluntly put, I found this book over generalized, arrogant, assuming and idealizing. The use of behaviorist techniques is the book's single redeeming quality, offering a small peak into the world of behavioral therapy and its effectiveness when working with teens. Even still, parents would be much better off buying a book on behaviorism than reading the repetitive stories and dialogs between parents and teens.
In terms of ethnicity, race and religious views, the book does not apply cross-culturally. Race and ethnicity are never addressed; two topics that have play a significant role in child rearing. The name of the book is not Christian Parenting Teens With Love & Logic, but it should be. Constant references to God, Christ and The Bible are made and cited as sources for how to be a good parent. A good researcher and author acknowledges their bias at the beginning of a book, but Foster Cline and Jim Fay fail to do so. "It is ok to express the desire to our children that they lead a heterosexual life. Christ's message in the new testament is very clear : God's children are all and equally loved." The author's religious beliefs so heavily saturate the information presented that it is clear they cannot separate their personal biases or even acknowledge the existence of them. The religious stereotypes are appalling, saying that parents should watch out for teens who, "wear black clothes and jewelry with inverted pentacles", that they suggest involvement in satanic activity. However, when I was a teenager, all of my friends and I wore black and studied unique religions and spiritual systems. None of us were satanic or involved in cults; we were artists. This is yet another example of how the authors stereotype and force their personal ignorant beliefs on the reader.
In terms of gender, Parenting Teens With Love & Logic does a superficial job of addressing the topic. Changes that occur in boys and girls are lightly discussed. This is a recurrent issue throughout the book- it touches only briefly on every topic and never goes into detail. While sex and gender are two different topics, it is important to look at how the author addresses both.
If I had to pick one reason, of many, why I would not recommend this book to a client or friend, the discussion of sex and sexuality would be it. The authors personal beliefs about sexuality and premarital sex are so deeply ingrained in each word of this book that Cline and Fay's message is crystal clear: premarital sex is wrong and you should only have sex with one person, your spouse, or else you will get an STD, AIDS, or have issues with fertility later on. Sweeping generalizations and simply inaccurate statements are made in reference to how boys and girls view sex. "A girl usually regards sex as being closely related to reproduction. A guy usually considers sex a physical and emotional release." Not one female I spoke with would concur with this statement, rather they all passionately disagreed and deemed the author arrogant and challenged the statement as an old fashioned myth not in any way applicable to women today.
In summary, the pitfalls of Parenting With Love & Logic far outweigh the few pearls of behaviorist wisdom. As a professional I would not recommend or cite this book as a good source for parenting skills or wisdom, but rather as a superficial, inadequate and biased book that ought to be re-titled. Parenting books that claim to hold no ethnic or religious affiliation should contain only information, research, and techniques, not personal opinions. As previously stated, Parenting With Love & Logic is not one of these books.
If you really want to have some fun though, do a little research on Foster Cline...had I done it before I would not have bought this book.

With her couture clothes and movie-star good looks (she was frequently mistaken for Greta Garbo), Tamara de Lempicka seemed too glamorous to be a serious painter. Even in the years of her greatest success, 1925 to 1935, the luscious colors and highly wrought finishes of her portraits--a suspect genre in any case to high modernists--linked Lempicka more closely to the Italian Renaissance painters she revered than to her cubist contemporaries. She was labeled an "Art Deco artist," someone whose work was more decorative than substantive. Feminist scholar Laura Claridge, a good guide despite her overuse of the phrase "gender politics," enhances readers' appreciation of Lempicka's work without scanting her enjoyably lurid personal life. Born (around 1895) in Russia of Polish and Jewish descent, Lempicka fled the revolution to set up shop in Paris during its avant-garde heyday; the Nazi threat sent her to America, where Hollywood proved a natural setting. Two husbands, one daughter, male and female lovers, manic-depressive illness--nothing ever really cramped her style or her dedication to art. She died in 1980, a venerable survivor still looking forward rather than back. Blending art history with psychological analysis, Claridge helps readers understand why this gifted painter, although commercially successful, has not enjoyed the critical respect she deserves. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
An icon of the Jazz Age, Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka lived a life well worth recording. Until now, however, no one has written the story of this woman of extraordinary talent and notoriety. She was a great beauty, an aristocratic refugee of the Russian Revolution, and a frankly erotic painter who insisted upon Renaissance aesthetics, figuration, and painterly craft in modern art. The sky-high prices attached to her canvases in recent years have still not dispelled the suspicions that a woman of Lempicka's glamour and fame could be a truly serious artist. Yet the reviews of the early twentieth century tell a different story: her work was routinely singled out as competing with major figures of the School of Paris, including Léger, Laurençin, Kisling, and Picasso.
In this first critical biography, Laura Claridge draws upon her exclusive access to Lempicka's family, friends, and archives to re-create the life that the painter carefully withheld even from her own daughter: the truth of her birth; her escape from Bolshevik Russia; her determination to become a New Woman; her lifelong bouts of depression; her numerous affairs with the women and men she painted; her flight from Nazi Europe via Havana; and her years in Hollywood and New York as the "Baroness with a brush," all informed by the artistic integrity and social anachronism that condemned her to being written out of the canons of modern art.
Emblematic of '20s excess and indulgence, Tamara de Lempicka's life of great wealth, indiscriminate sexuality, and endless intrigue makes for a fascinating narrative. But her paintings have inspired fierce disagreements over issues of class, wealth, and gender in modern art, making her work ripe for critical re-evaluation. In Tamara de Lempicka: A Life of Deco and Decadence, Laura Claridge has succeeded brilliantly on both counts, bringing to light the contradictions that fueled the life and work of this provocative painter.
Though Paris in the early twenties certainly earned its bohemian reputation, Tamara was playing the game hard by anyone's standards. It seemed to her that she could have it all: respect, money, and sexual gratification on the side. She had arrived at the Gare du Nord only four years earlier, gifted with a painter's talent and a family history of feminine power. Encountering a cultural climate that affirmed art as a remunerative career for women, she also felt freed personally by the Modernist mantra to "make it new" that underwrote every aspect--trivial and profound--of daily life. She was determined to embody that icon of the age, the new woman.
Customer Reviews:
A Fabulous Biography of a Fabulous Artist.......2006-09-20
A long time Lempicka fan, I read Claridge's biography as part of the research for my master's thesis on the artist. This book provided so much information not only on events in Lempicka's life, but also her sexual habits and personal characteristics. I also found this book a great source on life in 1920s and 30s Paris. But be warned, this book does not provide many images of Lempicka's unique paintings, although many of the illustrations are full-color reproductions.
This book reads easily and is entertaining as well as informative. I highly recommend it for Lempicka and Art Deco fans!
A Bio that reads like a lush 'old-Hollywood' movie!.......2005-03-02
This book is vivid with details and descriptions of Tamara's fascinating life. A sumptuous bite into the life of an artist; this story is simmered in vibrant retellings of Tamara's historical tribulations, her numerous tumultuous relationships (both male & female), her eccentricities along with an almost infamous ego, and the constant tribulations of trying to express oneself via pigment & canvas. Even if you are not currently familiar with Tamara's work (audible gasp) this book is guaranteed to enrich your view of artists and vibrant women alike.
Wonderful Artist! Wondeful Book!.......2002-02-24
I like a million other people, had never heard of Tamara De Lempicka (how sad!!) until I heard Madonna in an interview mention how incredible she is. This biography was wonderful, very insightful, I feel like I know 'something' about Tamara now. I have developed a wonderful appreciation of her life and work. Some biographies can be dry and boring, but this one was facinating! Good read!
A Truly Gripping Biography!.......2000-03-22
Over the many years spent in research for this book, ProfessorLaura Claridge acquired extraordinarily detailed knowledge of thecultural, moral, and intellectual atmosphere of early 20th century European aristocracy and avant guard high society. Then, with penetrating wit and spellbinding ingenuity, she wove this Zeitgeist into every relevant passage of this scholarly book. The uniqueness of Professor Claridge's biography is that she has been able to show that just as De Lempicka's paintings represented more than a mere accumulation of colors on canvas, her bewitching life represented more than the simple sum of its parts. Claridge has managed to capture the "gestalt" of the "brave new woman". With compassion and humor, flawless prose and delicate discrimination, impeccable elegance and style, affection, grace, and savoir faire, Professor Claridge has shown how it is possible for a woman to have it all! This book is an education in history, art history, anthropology, sociology, politics, civics, and European culture and aristocracy at the height of its decadent best. I loved this gripping book and read it with the excitement and absorption usually reserved for suspence novels. Bravo.
