4 out of 5 stars Brief Review of L.A........2005-08-27

A nice, concise guide for L.A. Hits the highlights of L.A. and surrounding areas but does not review the more unique aspects. Restaurant section is okay.

5 out of 5 stars Just the Facts, Please! Excellent Overview!.......2005-04-17

I've read several tour books for Los Angeles, and I find the Frommer's to be quite up-to-date and informative, with a clear layout. This book breaks Los Angeles down into its essential neighborhoods/areas, and then proceeds with a litany of "just the facts" - very helpful for a first-time visit.

This guide also comes with a free full-size map! It also includes information on day or weekend trips to all areas of interest within about 150 miles of LA (including Santa Barbara). Enjoy this informative gem!

June update: Just got back from 9 days in L.A. (my first-ever visit) and this guide served me well. Most of its information was spot-on and useful. A drive along Mulholland Drive is not to be missed! One minor quibble, though, is that the guide says Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade was the most over-rated tourist trap. I found this just the opposite - we enjoyed this area very much - lots of free entertainment, good shops and restaurants - and all outdoors just a few blocks from the ocean. Loved it! I will say that the Eyewitness "Top 10 Los Angeles" was just as helpful and was much smaller (i.e., pocket-sized).

          Book Description

A stirring collection of hundreds of never-before-seen photographs of the Kennedy family, presented in this seminal work by JFK's personal photographer, Jacques Lowe. Upon Jacque Lowe's death, commentators credited his pictures with creating the myth of Camelot. Lowe's photographs of the Kennedys, taken during his span as JFK's personal photographer, have become the iconic imagery of a time that remains vividly etched in the national psyche. Of Lowe's 40,000 photographs of the Kennedys, only a few hundred have ever been seen. Authorized by the Lowe estate, REMEMBERING JACK-which is being published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of JFK's death-features more than 600 pictures, half of which are previously unpublished. All of Lowe's original negatives were housed in a bank vault in the World Trade Center and were destroyed on 9/11/01. The book includes an introduction by Tom Wolfe, Lowe's friend and photo subject for 40 years. Hugh Sidey, who was traveling with Kennedy when he was assassinated, writes the commentary, while Thomasina Lowe chronicles her father's work and legacy. The focus, however, remains on the pictures-a poignant evocation of the charm, youth, high spirits, and legend of the Kennedys, all tinged with a sense of loss.

5 out of 5 stars Should also have been titled "Remembering Jacque".......2005-05-31

WOW!!! What a group of luscious photographs from a man who obviously loved photography and the Kennedys, a great combination! As a portrait photographer I was impressed by the rich quality of the prints as well as the overall stories told with these photographs and I can only imagine what a 1st generation print would have looked like. Thanks to all who helped put this book together, but especially to his daughter Thomasina.

          5 out of 5 stars great photos.......2005-01-18

very interesting photos that I had never seen before. too many books on this family are filled with all the same photos. Nice to see some new ones.

5 out of 5 stars What Jack and Jackie taught us..........2004-10-25

The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 may have destroyed Jacques Lowe's negatives of the Kennedy family, but not the photographs or the brilliance evident in the camera capturing this shining light that once was Camelot. On the fortieth anniversary of the assassination, which is astutely, not for the first time, linked with September 11, 2001 as a turning point and a loss of innocence in our country's history, the magic of the Kennedys portrayed through Jacques Lowe's wise, perceptive lens makes us mourn for all we've lost.

Modern pundits and social critics might decry our fascination with the Kennedys, but their influence is felt strongly, especially now in Maria Shriver and hubby Ah-nold, a fierce Republican but a believer in the service to God and country that JFK practiced. You can't ignore Jack and Jackie keeping company with Premier Nikita Khrushchev, or Kennedy shaking hands with coal miners. Lowe's close-ups of the miners illuminate the dignity and strength of these men.

The Kennedys romp through a time of change in social, personal and political home movies. Particularly striking are the unguarded JFK moments, such as the photo of JFK thinking with a cigar (no Clinton jokes, please), or the sequence and closeup illustrating Kennedy's distress over hearing of Prime minister of Congo Patrice Lumumba's murder. We see the Kennedys, and they are us, with the added weight of John-John's salute. The intimacy lends more depth of history to this important, moving book.

5 out of 5 stars "There was a God in the Irish heaven after all.".......2004-10-14

What a surprise when I found this book.To think that after 40 years a refreshing new book on President Kennedy could still be published. All the photos were taken by Jacques Lowe, who was essentially the Kennedy family photographer. His photos show the personal and human side of Kennedy and the Kennedy family as well as the people who were close to the family.
Once JFK became President, things changed drastically, and we no longer saw the same kind of photos Lowe gave us.It is a shame that Lowe did not continue on as the family photographer and hence continue with the personal glimpses he gave us.This book also has many photos which were not previously published, which show the real emotions of the people involved. Also surprising is how good the text is that accompanies the photos.
Of the many Kennedy books I own or have seen, none is better or more personal and character revealing ,than this one.
One can only imagine what a treasure trove went up in smoke when all of Lowe's negatives were lost in the World Trade Towers destruction on 9/11.
This is a large, heavy, well printed and bound book using top quality paper;a little expensive, but worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars very intimate photographs of the whole kennedy clan.......2004-01-18

A real treasure of intimate photographs of the entire kennedy clan by the photographers who was granted access to them before jfk became president. this book is a treasure.

One year ago the writer of the letters which follow, visited the Battle Field of Waterloo. In looking over many relics of the combat preserved in the Museum there, he was particularly interested in the files of journals contemporary with the action. These contained the Duke of Wellington's first despatch announcing the victory, the reports of the subordinate commanders, and the current gossip as to the episodes and hazards of the day.

            Book Description

Although millions of buffalo once covered the great plains, the animals were hunted almost to extinction in the 1880s. In this compelling story of perseverance, the reader is led through a tale of tragedy followed by triumph. When land was a valuable as gold, conservationists fought to establish a wildlife preserve for bison. Fifteen buffalo from the New York Zoological Society were loaded onto a train, and three men were assigned to stand guard on the 1800-mile trip.

4 out of 5 stars From a family of readers.......2002-01-11

I read this book aloud to my family, and we all enjoyed it. My 11-year-old son still refers to it. The book tells a sad story with a positive ending. It was an interesting and inspirational story about how a species was saved and what a big difference a few people can make. What the reviewer above may have taken for lame attempts at humor, we read as successful attempts to explain events and situations in simple ways that a modern reader -- especially a child -- can understand. In my opinion, there's too much fluff and political correctness in children's literature today. This well-researched book that made note of a true story was a refreshing break from the monotony. This isn't our favorite book ever, but we've added it to our permanent library to reread and to lend to friends.

If you're AT ALL inclined to do your own work around the house, books of this type pay for themselves several times over. Just one repair you read about in this book and do yourself will pay for the entire cost of the purchase. Excellent investment, even for the novice. Instructions are clear and easy to follow.

When it comes to home repairs, I am all thumbs. I've had leaky faucets and toilets for years. Patching drywall, fixing locks, and replacing glass in windows used to require a call for professional help. Until I bought this book. It contains easy to follow, step by step directions with terrific pictures. I've saved hundreds of dollars since purchasing it. Simply terrific!

I'm on my fourth copy of this book. Mine tend to vanish like the morning dew juat as my neighbors begin their spring garage cleanup. . . My bro-in-law has one as well, but he insists that the fact that my name is written in indelible SHARPIE marker on the front is just a tribute to me and my helpful nature. . . This book has more helpful hints in introduction than most do in the first 5 chapters. And it just goes on and aon and on!

With actual real life applications for stuff you'll find lying around your garage (from old buckets to wire to old useless hose), this book is a true boon for anyone looking to clean up their act (and their garage) and make the time they have to spend on projects less of a fight to just keep the cords straight!

I highly recommend this book for anyone that knows they own at least 4 tape measures, but can't find one to save their lives!

Well worth the cost, and as well constructed as the book is, it will last a lifetime!

I was so impressed, I got copies for my two sons and son-in-law.

It is something I would not want to be without.

It really does have helpful hints found nowhere else.

I thank you for Readers Digest Helpful Hints.

In most public schools today, children aren't taught problem-solving skills until high school--a time when they're often already mired in a variety of difficult situations. Raising a Thinking Preteen addresses this situation by presenting a well-developed program, ICPS (I Can Problem Solve), that's designed to help children think clearly about their actions and emotions by considering different viewpoints, solutions, and possible consequences. Every child can benefit from the concepts here; as author Myrna Shure says, "there is no ceiling or upper limit when it comes to learning interpersonal skills." The book begins with some practical basics--especially useful are some simple games that will help develop the vocabulary your child will use to discuss his feelings. Not every 8-year-old can define embarrassed or frustrated very easily! This parent-friendly guide focuses on everyday occurrences and practical improvements rather than theoretical possibilities; as a result, each chapter is full of real-life examples and suggestions for teaching these techniques to your own children. Hurried parents who lack focused reading time will appreciate the way each chapter breaks down into smaller subjects--so those constant interruptions won't be such a bother. Jill Lightner

                Book Description

In her bestselling Raising a Thinking Child, Myrna B. Shure introduced her nationally acclaimed "I Can Problem Solve" program, which helps four to seven-year-olds develop essential skills to resolve daily conflicts and think for themselves. With Raising a Thinking Preteen, Shure has tailored this plan especially for eight-to twelve-year-olds as they approach the unique challenges of adolescence. The preteen years are often the last opportunity for parents to teach their children how to think for themselves. This book is the only source with a proven plan to help them do just that.

                1 out of 5 stars Horrible - Boring - Psychobabble!.......2006-11-04

I bought this because of the great reviews. I think it's awefully boring. The writer takes this tone, like parents are morons with no common sense. I hated it and returned right away.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource for parents.......2003-08-04

Developmental psychologist Shure shares her method of encouraging kids to think for themselves, by learning and mastering a specific set of skills to become good problem solvers, make good decisions, and resolve conflict. Chapters discuss the wrong ways of parenting (explaining, suggesting, and overpowering) and recommends parents try the problem solving approach. Shure offers games to play to develop skills in such as thinking about how other people are feeling, recognizing conflicting emotion, planning alternative solutions, planning in a sequence, and considering consequences. A quiz at the end offers additional ways to test and hone these skills.
At the beginning, Shute states that children must learn pro-social behaviors. Social withdrawl is not something one outgrows, and encourages adults to draw out the wallflower, loner types. Parental involvement is key.
Examples were always very clear, but sometimes the answers seemed too perfect. Not every child is a textbook case. Most of the book focuses on three different children, and more cases or diffent types of children might have been included. Still the premise is good, modeling behavior is recommended, and the techniques appear to work.
All of the studies she cites are 13-18 years old, a point of concern, and the book loses a bit of credibility. However, the ICPS method is supposed to very good for kids with ADHD, a current hot topic. Updated research would lend more authority to the work. She frequently makes reference to colleagues with giving much explaination of their work, a minor frustration. References are cited at the end in a bibliography oddly divided by chapter, but without numbered or detailed notes. The author kindly includes her own mailing address, email address and URL for questions, concern and feedback.
Not having any children of my own to test Shure's theories out on, I hope to put them to use in dealing with some of the young adults I work with. Frustrated parents may find this book works for them; stock it in your parent teacher section.

5 out of 5 stars Best for parents and teachers..........2002-08-26

Myrna Shure tells parents and teachers (from a cognitive-behavioral point of view) how to help 8- to 12-year-olds cope with ordinary and not-so-ordinary pressures of growing up. Her method is central to establishing a positive social emotional learning climate in a classroom. She also helps parents avoid the traps that parents fall into: power struggles, "telling" (i.e., ordering), "explaining," and so forth. Her belief is that if children in this group can "think" better about emotional issues, then they will handle the pressures of adolescence much better. Therefore, while her work addresses immediate issues of growing up in 8 to 12 year-olds, she also thinks "preventatively" about the 13 to 18 year-old group.

Shure proposes teaching youngsters five fundamental skills: (1) understanding another's feelings and point of view; (2) understanding motives; (3) finding alternate solutions; (4) considering consequences; and (5) planning sequential steps to arrive at one's goals. Her emphasis is on the child's intrinsic motivation to do better and be part of a group, not on extrinsic rewards (as in "ordinary" behavior therapy).

She has great empathy and flexibility with kids. You will see in this book a perceptive, creative, and sensitive grown-up working with kids and parents. You will learn how to develop and apply these five skills with children--either in your home or in your classroom. The I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) program is worth the ticket of admission, but to get a chance to "hear" her good heart is a double bonus.

I also liked her time-frame. Children need time to grow. She is not an instant-fix-it expert. She respects kids enough to value their own pace, for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Where the rubber meets the road.......2000-10-26

Wonderfully hands-on, this book really teaches the parent how to talk to the child in a way that is constructive, instead of so many of the destructive ways that we all, mostly unknowingly, fall into. This book and its predecessor, Raising a Thinking Child, should be used as textbooks for the parenting class everyone in America should be required to take before being allowed to have children.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for improving parent-child communication!.......2000-03-25

For anyone who wants a good relationship with their child that can hopefully last through the teen years, or wants to learn how to communicate effectively with their child, this book is a great start. If you have experienced the frustration of trying to "reason with" your child, and don't understand why your words are not working, this book really gives helpful guidelines on how to improve your methods of communication. If you find yourself yelling at your children, and experience that it just makes things worse, this book addresses this issue as well. It also tackles the problem of trying to think for your child. As a parent of a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old, this book will really help me to communicate and deal with my children in a way that nutures their growth as individuals who can really think for themselves.

                Book Description

An art world insider provides a witty and penetrating account of fifty years at the center of international culture.

Art historian, curator, and museum director Michel Laclotte has been at the forefront of French cultural life over the past half century. This informal autobiography sheds light on his brilliant career with warmth and directness. Highlights include twenty years as chief curator of painting and sculpture at the Musée du Louvre, heading the team that created the Musée d'Orsay, and taking the reins of the Louvre to lead the effort that culminated in the museum's transformation into the "Grand Louvre," one of the world's preeminent cultural attractions.

Raising the curtain on fifty years of Western art scholarship, intrigue, and achievement, Laclotte introduces an extraordinary cast of characters who set France's cultural direction in the postwar period from Charles de Gaulle and André Malraux in the 1950s to François Mitterand in the 1980s and 1990s. His story overlaps with virtually every major scholarly figure in French art history of the last half-century, as well as Laclotte's mentors and colleagues throughout and beyond Europe, from Roberto Longhi and Anthony Blunt to Sir John Pope-Hennessy and Millard Meiss. An incomparable testament to a period of seismic change in the museum world, this volume will be essential reading for art world afficianados and all students of art and modern culture.

I got this book while writing a research paper on the Louvre and found myself reading it just for fun - I am a Art History and Curatorial Studies student planning on doing this as my career so I may be biased, but It was so interesting to hear Laclotte's experiences. I love the sections where he gives his own personal reactions to experiences such as I.M. Pei's plan for the glass pyramids. So good! Anyway, fun read, interesting cultural information.
