The Color Encyclopedia of Cape Bulbs
ASIN: 1770070176
Release Date: 2005-06-30 |
Product Description
This book takes readers on a journey through the diverse landscapes of southern Africa, showcasing the unique richness of its wild flowers along the way. Each chapter focuses on a specific region, highlighting the most beautiful, interesting and rare plants occurring there. The journey begins at the Zambesi River and then moves down the eastern part of the region through the well-watered land of plenty. From here, the reader is taken through the splendors of the Cape fynbos and then northwards, to end in the parched thirstlands of the west. Beautiful full-color photographs by well-known botanical photographer Colin Paterson-Jones celebrate the flora of the region, while the authoritative text reveals insights into the plants themselves, their origins, interactions with other living organisms, and their often remarkable adaptation to sometimes hostile environments. Emphasis is given to the context in which the flowers grow; the changing vegetation and landscapes are featured throughout, displaying the extraordinary diversity within the region.

A stunningly visual survey of the diverse landscapes of windflowers that South Africa has to offer.......2005-10-06
Southern African Wild Flowers: Jewels Of The Veld is a coffee table book that presents the reader with a stunningly visual survey of the diverse landscapes of windflowers that South Africa has to offer. Each individual chapter focuses upon a specific region, highlighting and showcasing the most beautiful, interesting, and unusual plants occurring there. Beginning at the Zambezi River, this "book bound expedition" continues through the splendors of the Cape fynbos, then northwards, to conclude with the parched "thirstlands" of the west. The gorgeous full-color images by botanical photographer Colin Patterson-Jones is the perfect complement to research botanist's John Manning informed and informative text about the plants, their origins, their interactions with other living organisms, and their remarkable adaptations to sometimes hostile environments. Southern African Wild Flowers is especially commended to the attention of botanists, horticulturalists, landscapers, and adventurous gardeners!
Book Description
This first complete account of all the bulbous plants of the Cape Floral Region is an essential aid to the identification of all species presently in cultivation.
The Cape Region, at the southern tip of Africa, is easily among the richest centers for bulbous plants and probably the most famous. Nearly 1200 species of bulbous plants find their home there and almost three-quarters of them occur nowhere else. This first complete account of all the bulbous plants of the Cape Floral Region is an essential aid to the identification of all species presently in cultivation as well as the many others that are potentially valuable horticultural subjects. The book is richly illustrated with high-quality color photographs of more than half the species of Cape bulbs, many of which have never been illustrated before.
Customer Reviews:
Great refference book........2003-07-26
An excellent reference book on cape bulbs. A wealth of photo's and information. Aspects of the book are on the technical side for a layman. But worth having.Highly recomended.
A magnificent guide to a magnificent group of plants.......2003-07-24
The flora of South Africa is a stunning example of bio-diversity in the world. Due to a large variety of habitats many plant families have developed a wide range of species, a lot of them endemic to this region. While botanical enthusiasts worldwide focus on succulent and caudiciform plants the unbelievably rich geophytic flora of the Cape (including the orchids) is not fully discovered for cultivation yet.
The Color Encylopedia of Cape Bulbs is a wonderful approach to overcome this situation. The authors present essential information about everything concerning this topic. Their book provides a general survey of the physical and biological features of the habitats. The topics cultivation and gardening are included as well. The information given is concise and precise and a very helpful background for botanists and cultivators, too. A glossary, a key to the species, a table of synonyms and a suppliers list at the end of the book finish the bulk of basic information.
The encyclopedic part of the book offers detailed descriptions of a wide range of bulbous plants of different monocot families. It is built up following an alphabetical order of the genera which allows to quickly find a species without expert knowledge about botanical taxonomy. Specified information about habitat and cultivation is given in the genus description. The species descriptions include all necessary items and are accompanied by wonderful photographs of many of these impressingly beautiful plants. It is astonishing to see what a variety of different looking species some genera have produced, for instance Gladiolus and Moraea from the Iridaceae family.
In summary, I highly recommend this book for botanists, for travellers to the Cape region with botanical interests and for gardeners as well. When I opened the encyclopedia for the first time I was fascinated for hours. The species descriptions and pictures alone are worth the prize of this book, in my opinion! Along with Karsten Wodrich's books about the South African orchids, the Encyclopedia of Cape Bulbs gives an impression of the geophytic plant treasures this region offers to all enthusiasts. And, last but not least, these books are an indispensable help to successfully cultivate them.

This guide to more than 1,000 varieties of tree species is arranged in easy-to-use format. Leaf and stem silhouettes help direct the user to the correct species, and full color photographs make identification that much easier.
Customer Reviews:
Bulky but handleable.......2000-06-15
This is a botanical reference work on the trees of Southern Africa (mostly S-Africa & Rhodesia/Zimbabwe?). Its printing history speaks for itself. First published in 1977; second revised edition by Dr E.J.Moll in 1984, third impression 1988 (when 12 pages were added with updates on nomenclature); ninth impression in 1997. What can I add to that?
This is an identification key and reference work to Southern African trees, giving per species a short description, a distribution map and one (or more) line drawings of a detail, usually a leaf (sometimes a fruit, sometimes both. Upon occasion a tree habit). Names listed include full scientific name, in some cases synonyms, always an english name and usually an afrikaans name. There are close to a thousand pages of this, supplemented with over a hundred pages of color illustrations (both photographs and colored drawings).
Compared to some of the magnificently illustrated books on trees that are now available this work looks somewhat modest. However the absence of an abundance of photographs does mean that all these trees can be captured in a single binding of a handy size and weight, at a quite affordable price. [Might be due for an update, but I sure won't volunteer to undertake it. That would be a whole lot of work! ]

Book Description
This volume comprises a selection of original contributions presented at a workshop held in Montpellier, France, in June 1997. The two main objectives of the workshop were, firstly, to bring together what is understood about the processes underlying agroforestry practice, and, secondly, to provide a forum to explore relevant models and modelling approaches. The workshop was also able to play a role in examining the agroforestry systems encountered in temperate and Mediterranean areas, including both traditional and more innovative agroforestry practices. The main aspects discussed were: ecological interactions amongst components, environmental impact, economics and policy modelling.

Error prone.......2006-08-11
While its some feat to assemble this amount of information in one boopk, the author never actually goes out to check the accuracy of the data. This causes many factual mistakes to merge. Some are very basic, such as the statement that Jack McGurn was born in Chicago, rather than in Sicily. In a field like this, where errors are commonplace, you need a book that tries to get the truth about personalities and events if its not to be just another myth-spreader. This sadly isn't it.
Well Done and well organized!.......2000-02-14
Trying to find a good reference book about organized crime? Want one at a good price? Jay Robert Nash has created the perfect book for you with World Encyclopedia of Organized Crime from De Capo Press.
The over 600 pages of the Who's Who in organized crime is covered in an A to Z format. From Joe Adonis, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Bugs Moran and so many others, you'll find the fascinating stories and cross-references.
You may find other books more detailed, but I have found this book to be complete in the overall number of people covered. The book is an easy read and the index makes it easy to look up anybody or any topic.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better value for your money. About the only thing missing is a cd-rom software application.
It's not about the World - just the U.S........1999-09-26
Truth in advertising? This is solely about the U.S., with a very few token entries on people and place outside it. Nothing on the Triads, nothing on the Golden Triangle, nothing on Marseilles or Hong Kong, nothing on modern international gangs such as the Jamaicans or Nigerians, etc., etc. I returned my copy to Amazon in great disappointment. If you want biographies of some U.S. figures (only some: nothing on Harold Meltzer, for example) with ugly pictures, this might be of some use. But it's solely oriented to personalities, not to analysis
Best reference for any organized crime afficcionado.......1999-06-14
I don't think there has to be much explanation here. I've been studying the American Mafia for a couple of years and I have never seen or found such a variety of information. I have movies and books alike and I have to say that this is probably my best investment in any book or movie I own.

Model 6000: "Limousine of the Air".......2007-05-31
The 1920s witnessed growing interest in air travel and "the businessman who flew was a new market for all airplane companies." At Travel Air a "sedan model," targeted "businessmen who needed fast, comfortable travel capability." It proved to be the "most successful and worthy of the Travel Air name." A high wing, semi-cantilever monoplane with a fully enclosed cabin, "the Model 6000 was billed as the `Limousine of the Air.'"(44-45)
The interior featured cabin heating and "roll-down automobile style windows." (48) While many Model 6000s served fledgling airlines, one unit was modified for the personal use of actor Wallace Berry. It incorporating plush velour seats, a couch for napping while in flight, and a lavatory with hot and cold running water and sported a larger, more powerful 420 hp Wasp engine which required a strengthened structure. Interior options alone cost Berry an additional $1000 and the total cost, at $20,000, was "the most expensive Travel Air ever built."(54) In comparison the price for a standard Model 6000-B with a 300hp Wright engine was $13,500. While significantly less than Berry's, even at this price it was unlikely to be in the range of the average owner/pilot seeking personal air transportation.
Aircraft manufacturers were able to use data from experiments conducted at McCook Field in Dayton, Ohio. There, in the 1920s, "many experiments with airfoils, drag reduction, engines, supercharging and turbo-charging, lubricants, fuels, propellers and armaments were being conducted."(14) While primarily for military purposes, some of these technological advancements diffused to the commercial sector. One company was Travel Air, Inc.
For a time, before he started his own company, Clyde Cessna worked for Travel Air. He was one of the organizers, contributed $5000 initially, served on the board as vice-president, and loaned wood working equipment to get the company going. Other notables with Travel Air were Walter H. Beech, secretary and Lloyd C. Stearman, chief engineer. In time Cessna, Beech, and Stearman would leave a legacy of aircraft monikers all their own, but before that they created Travel Air designs recognizable for their reliability, attractiveness, and style.
The company fell victim to a failing economy at the onset of the Great Depression and ceased to exist in 1932.
Book Description
With only two measurements, knitters can make customized socks. The unusual heel and toe shaping method works fantastically well.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best sock books available.......2007-09-07
Avid sock knitters all benefit from owning this book. Gibson-Roberts presents a terrific method of turning a heel when knitting toe-up socks. It's a short-row technique that works every time. The book helps in sock design as well. I consider it an important part of my library.
Great!.......2007-01-15
First, if you're interested in simply sitting down and knitting a sock, this probably isn't the book for you.
However, if you're ready to learn *how* to make a sock, measure your foot and fine-tune the fit, this book is not to be missed.
Just about every technique is covered -- toe-up, cuff-down, etc. -- and the text is clear and easy to understand.
I'm lovin' this book!
Great sock book, good tips for all sock patterns and fit.......2006-08-12
I found the foot measurements very helpful in identifying how to fit a sock. The instructions for producing the short row heel and toe where very good. I haven't made any of the patterns yet, but they look very wearable.
A book of theory, not patterns.......2006-06-23
I just read through my friends copy of this, and added it to my wishlist. This book describes, step by step, the theory of short row sock making.
As far as the sizing goes, it relies very much on careful measurement and knowing the gauge you are working. Doing test swatches to measure gauge is essential to figuring out how many stitches to cast on. Don't go by the gauge on the yarn package, what any given person knits often has nothing to do with what the yarn maker imagines.
The pictures could use some improvement. As others have said, it isn't always clear which step a particular picture belongs to, and not every step has a picture. I do prefer the line drawings to photographs, since it is often difficult to track where the yarn goes in photographs of knitting. But it would have been good to hire a professional illustrator with some knowledge of knitting, rather than having the author do the pictures, so that they would be drawn with more technical skill.
It would also have been good if she offered both left handed and right handed instructions, particularly for the cast-ons and bind-offs. I'm an oddity, I knit left handed continental style, and I can tell that interpreting some of these cast-on/bind-off techniques is going to be tricky.
This is a book for the foot of the sock, look elsewhere for interesting patterns for the cuffs and legs.
A good technical reference, but . . ........2006-04-13
the particulars don't work. The sizing (and formula for sizing) in this book don't work for me at all. Every time I've tried to use Gibson-Roberts's formula, I've ended up with enormous socks that needed to be ripped out--one was sixteen inches in circumference. The directions for the short row technique themselves do work, but the pen and ink illustrations aren't very good. I'd recommend a more general knitting book with a chapter on socks, since the short row technique needs no more than a page or two to be explained.

401 Old ways to bore your kids........2006-03-22
This book is way too outdated for our hectic, electronic, urban life. I don't recommend it, it doesn't take into consideration that we don't live in a farm and that our kids watch television and surf the web too. I have to say that I only read it briefly and decided it didn't apply to me.
Good Ideas for a house full of kids!.......2006-03-03
This book had lots of great information about the things we NEED to teach our kids before they venture out into the unknown. With 5 kids ranging in age from 18 years to 10 months, everyone is in a different place and it has been fun to watch the younger kids learn from the older kids. We have some goals in place for each kid and they are eager to start learning lots of "grown up" things!
Excellent Book!.......2000-01-02
I borrowed this book from the library and felt lost when I had to give it back. So I want to get one for myself to keep and use whenever I need to reference back to it. Great ideas that we will definitely be using around here.
Good practical advise for teaching life skills to kids.......1998-10-03
I am already utilizing several ideas from this book and I haven't finished reading it yet! The concept of teaching practical life skills to one's children to develop their self-confidence as well as helpfulness is great. My children are responding very well to new habit formation. They are also looking forward to getting their own recipe book with foods they can make themselves without Mom hanging around.
Well worth reading...and rereading periodically........1998-05-27
This is a great book. I've been hording my neighbor's dog-eared copy for a few years now. Every time I look at it, I find something other tool to try. I've finally decided that it is time to buy my own copy and let my neighbor lend hers to someone else who could use it.

An enigma wrapped in a mystery.......2004-02-13
Yes, this book is fiction masquerading as fact. However to suggest it's just a cynical literary prank to confuse art groupies is akin to saying that Macbeth is about a boy and his mother. What Boyd does is create a narrative which suggests a poetic truth about life, art and identity. The idea that fiction is more moving when tied to real events and people is not a new one. it may also in fact, be more true than reality. Nate Tate is a sort of "everyman" artist and Boyd plays with the curious idea that to be famous, one need only be obscure and leave just enough tantalizing facts scattered around. Word of mouth will do the rest. Famous Artists, like actors, only survive their demise by oral history. Stories like "My aunt knew Marilyn Monroe before she was famous, or "The guy in Memphis who made my burger could've been Elvis" suggest that myth, fact, and memory are all shades of the same truth, and not seperate as once believed. This blurring of fact and "near fact" is crucial to understanding the American national psyche. it's no accident Boyd cleverly draws attention to that in the title of this book. Anyone who followed the Priavte Jessica Lynch docudrama over the past year will realize that Boyd was way ahead of his time and should've been a government "Spin Doctor". Art and truth, continue to reside squarely in the eye of the beholder.
Predictable praise from a William Boyd fan.......1998-08-26
William Boyd demonstrates his versatility with this wonderful satire on modern biographies of arty types. Nat Tate is a fictional artist drawn by Boyd to possess every possible cliche-ridden characteristic, and whose life never deviated from that expected of him by the gullible art consuming public. In fact, so cleverly is the book presented that where I bought it in the Sydney (Australia) Art Gallery, there is a sign that directs purchasers to see the sales clerk before buying it- presumably to let you into the secret that the book's a joke, before you embarrass yourself before friends! The shallowness and predictability of the artist's (guess what) short life will bring a chuckle to the reader on every silly page. William Boyd's reputation as a great modern comic writer is firmly reinforced by "Nat Tate".
"Nat Tate" reveals a Zelig-like presence in 20th century art.......1998-05-21
The idea behind "Nat Tate" is an excellent one-- the life of an obscure (and fictional) American artist set against the backdrop of the triumph that was American (and specifically, New York) painting after World War II. The problem, however, is that this particular treatment of a Zelig-like character, as published, reveals only a kind of abstraction, and little that suggests a living, breathing individual. Tate's obscurity notwithstanding, the testimonies of those who brought to life the "facts" of this artist's life belie their relationship with the man as less than we might have imagined them to be. The book is filled with interesting photos documenting Tate's life and his relationships with the famous and notso-famous, at times blurred to suggest a kind of off-handedness, or that the photos had no particular importance when they were taken. Troubling, however, is that an error (even if only a typo) which captions a photo as being that of Frank O'Hara, circa 1935, is troubling since, in 1935, Frank O'Hara, a famous American poet and art critic, was only 9 years old. In a book full of deliberately fictional assertions meant to be taken as truth, one needs to accurately depict those historical truths surrounding the fiction to maintain this sort of story's credibility.
