Product Description

This book takes readers on a journey through the diverse landscapes of southern Africa, showcasing the unique richness of its wild flowers along the way. Each chapter focuses on a specific region, highlighting the most beautiful, interesting and rare plants occurring there. The journey begins at the Zambesi River and then moves down the eastern part of the region through the well-watered ‘land of plenty’. From here, the reader is taken through the splendors of the Cape fynbos and then northwards, to end in the parched ’thirstlands’ of the west. Beautiful full-color photographs by well-known botanical photographer Colin Paterson-Jones celebrate the flora of the region, while the authoritative text reveals insights into the plants themselves, their origins, interactions with other living organisms, and their often remarkable adaptation to sometimes hostile environments. Emphasis is given to the context in which the flowers grow; the changing vegetation and landscapes are featured throughout, displaying the extraordinary diversity within the region.

Book Description

This first complete account of all the bulbous plants of the Cape Floral Region is an essential aid to the identification of all species presently in cultivation.

The Cape Region, at the southern tip of Africa, is easily among the richest centers for bulbous plants and probably the most famous. Nearly 1200 species of bulbous plants find their home there and almost three-quarters of them occur nowhere else. This first complete account of all the bulbous plants of the Cape Floral Region is an essential aid to the identification of all species presently in cultivation as well as the many others that are potentially valuable horticultural subjects. The book is richly illustrated with high-quality color photographs of more than half the species of Cape bulbs, many of which have never been illustrated before.

4 out of 5 stars Great refference book........2003-07-26

An excellent reference book on cape bulbs. A wealth of photo's and information. Aspects of the book are on the technical side for a layman. But worth having.Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent guide to a magnificent group of plants.......2003-07-24

The flora of South Africa is a stunning example of bio-diversity in the world. Due to a large variety of habitats many plant families have developed a wide range of species, a lot of them endemic to this region. While botanical enthusiasts worldwide focus on succulent and caudiciform plants the unbelievably rich geophytic flora of the Cape (including the orchids) is not fully discovered for cultivation yet.

The Color Encylopedia of Cape Bulbs is a wonderful approach to overcome this situation. The authors present essential information about everything concerning this topic. Their book provides a general survey of the physical and biological features of the habitats. The topics cultivation and gardening are included as well. The information given is concise and precise and a very helpful background for botanists and cultivators, too. A glossary, a key to the species, a table of synonyms and a suppliers list at the end of the book finish the bulk of basic information.

The encyclopedic part of the book offers detailed descriptions of a wide range of bulbous plants of different monocot families. It is built up following an alphabetical order of the genera which allows to quickly find a species without expert knowledge about botanical taxonomy. Specified information about habitat and cultivation is given in the genus description. The species descriptions include all necessary items and are accompanied by wonderful photographs of many of these impressingly beautiful plants. It is astonishing to see what a variety of different looking species some genera have produced, for instance Gladiolus and Moraea from the Iridaceae family.

In summary, I highly recommend this book for botanists, for travellers to the Cape region with botanical interests and for gardeners as well. When I opened the encyclopedia for the first time I was fascinated for hours. The species descriptions and pictures alone are worth the prize of this book, in my opinion! Along with Karsten Wodrich's books about the South African orchids, the Encyclopedia of Cape Bulbs gives an impression of the geophytic plant treasures this region offers to all enthusiasts. And, last but not least, these books are an indispensable help to successfully cultivate them.

                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent On-Site Companion.......2004-02-18

I foung this book very useful at each of the temples. Its small size makes it easy to carry. The maps and elevations are quite useful for quick orientation. The text information is a ittle too scant for in-depth understanding, however. I recommend reading a description in a larger travel guide before visiting the site, and then using this book while at the site.

I believe this book deserve 10 stars for the humor (if possible) and the clarity in which the growth of the fascism in Italy is described. Not in Rome, not in a major town in Italy, but in a small and relatively unimportant place (for the continent) that can be the beautiful Sardinia. This is a history (or perhaps a chronicle) of how the fascism took place in Sardinia, masterly narrated by Lussu with clarity and most of all the humor of who knew that things were only to get worse. All who claim they know about fascism should first read this.

This inspired combination of humorous and poignant poems portrays the joys and sorrows of ordinary people in everyday life, and is of universal appeal. From fond memories of friends, family and holidays, appealing accounts of the antics of much-loved pets, an appreciation of new life and the dawn of a new day, to the severe sense of loss at the death of a loved one; these poems strike a chord in all our hearts. They emphasise the importance of the most basic of human needs: family loyalties, respect, love, concern and appreciation of our many blessings.

If you are tired of having obscurely ragged text posing as poetry, you'll like Jack Whitman's book, POETIC INJUSTICE. He hasn't forgotten that articles (a, an, the) are parts of English speech, along with other words that make sense in normal conversation. He organizes them all into endearing rhythm and rhyme so personal they grab you and don't let go. I've never been to Alaska, but my imagination was pushed and prodded "north 65 latitude degrees" so that during that one sitting with his book (cover to cover) I was there.

I was there, man, freezing and itching and stinging from the biting flies and mosquitoes, flogging frozen fog at Iditerod, fishing for reds and silvers and kings, soaring over glaciated rivers, working in the villages with my hands while working the bush with my mind, and loving every moment from my easy chair here in Virginia. A fun book. And I loved continuously chuckling and even was surprised by several real belly laughs, all too rare experiences for me these days. If you'd like a mental flight with a cynical comic to the rugged Alaska outdoors, you'll like this book.

An excellent primitive resource. Provides tips and patterns for a variety of primitive projects. "How to"s were helpful and straight forward. An excellent addition to any hooker's library!

4 out of 5 stars Good history. Complete guidelines for beginners........2007-01-13

This book has a full history of rug hooking which is a nice background to have when starting out. The instructions for beginners are the most complete I've seen so far including information on tools and the different kinds of rug hooking. Pics are nice, and the projects look to be complete with proper instructions. Although several aren't to my taste, there is still enough variety here for me to choose some I like and it teaches my something regardless of whether or not I use the pre made patterns here.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO RUG HOOKING READ THE WHOLE BOOK. IF NOT, YOU CAN EASILY FIND THE SECTION THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS. THIS IS THE BEST OF MY SEVERAL RUG HOOKING BOOKS.

Raymond Evison, world authority on clematis, here provides a fresh look at the genus by focusing on not just the popular large-flowered cultivars but also on the less well known species. A comprehensive plant encyclopedia divided into the distinct clematis groups provides detailed and authoritative descriptions of nearly 375 species and varieties.

3 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to Clematis.......2004-12-07

The first thing that stands out when you read this book is the great photography and excellent illustrations. Raymond J. Evison guides you through the wonderful world of Clematis by teaching you all there is to know about this beautiful plant. You will learn the history, classification, the different species, and much more.
As Evison states, this book isn't a monograph of the species, but a guide for the gardener. So, it has just enough background information so that the gardener has a good foundation. Even I got a bit lost in the groups section, but it becomes clearer as you get more into the book. I would have liked to see some shots about propagation, planting, training, and pruning, especially in a growing guide, but overall the descriptions and the book as a whole is great.
This is not a book for the complete novice, but for the intermediate to advanced gardener.

In an attempt to gather what wisdom he could to guide his son into adulthood, Kent Nerburn published a powerful collection of essays that touched the hearts of parents and children everywhere. In this beautiful revised edition, Nerburn refines his advice and expands his thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read of things that should be said........2007-02-04

In my 61 years of male life experiences, this is my favorite book, for it puts to words human ideals that are so beneficial for people of all ages to understand.

I found this book by chance in a used book store and bought it to read, to reflect on my experiences with my two sons and two step-children. Immediately I realized that Kent had put to words the things I had wanted to say to my children, but didn't know how to express it.

I then bought 30 copies, giving them to my children and friends with children. I read it again, this time calling Kent and thanking him for writing his thoughts for me to share with others whom I love.

I'm here at Amazon again, sending a link to Kent's Letters to a friend, who's husband has died, leaving their teenage son so alone. I'm constantly recommending this book, as well as quoting from it to share thoughts with others. When my brother-in-law died a couple months ago, Kent's thoughts on Tragedy and Suffering were most comforting to my sister and her in-laws. I know Kent's thoughts on Falling In Love I've shared with others has mended many a broken hearts.

Kent's dedication page statement - "We are born male. We must learn to be men." implies it's a book for guys to read, but I know many gals who have found it a valuable read.

I was just on a lengthy trip, with a number of extended layovers. Knowing this, of all I could have chosen to bring to read to make that time most worthwhile, I brought Letters to my Son. And I'll read it again and again.

For years I've thought that too often people read one book after another, searching for something very meaningful to be made know to them. Here is a book I believe, if read a number of times in a thoughtful way, and taken to heart, it will be the most satisfying read ever. I've become certain that it's good enough to last my lifetime.

I gave this book to my husband to give to our older son.

My husband liked it so much that he asked that I get
                                          another for our younger son.

All seem to enjoy it very much.

I am 26 and I just became a father. I still feel like a kid myself. Someone gave me this book for a birthday present. I read it to see if these were letters I would send my son. They are not really letters but more like essays or thoughts. This man says so many things I wish I could say. He helps me understand what is important in my life, what is important to teach my boy when he gets old enough. I don't always agree with Kent Nerburn's thinking. But I think he is very wise. I wish my dad was like him. I hope I can be a dad like him. He knows what is important in life. He doesn't just preach or lecture. He unfolds his thinking with stories from his own life. Sometimes he made mistakes and he tells us. He learned. Now he is teaching me so I can teach my son.

Thanks, Kent Nerburn. You tell a good truth.

                                          2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-10-18

This book is nice, sweet, and somewhat insightful. But I wanted a book that spoke more of the relationship between a father and a son. The vast majority of essays/chapters in this book could have been written by anyone for anyone. For example, Nerburn warns of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and extols the virtues of giving. But those lessons could have been taught by a mother to her daughter, a priest to a parishioner, or an uncle to a nephew. Many other essays in the book are similar in that they contain no unique perspective on the father-son relationship. (What does the "Power of Art" have to do with fatherhood?) This book reads like Chicken Soup for the Soul. In my opinion, the other reviews overrate this book.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect gift.......2004-07-24

Over the years I have had read numerous books of this nature, but always find myself returning to read a section, a paragraph or a few pages. A wonderful book that I have had the opportunity to share with numerous friends. I think I have purchased at least 20 copies a gifts.

                                          A must read.

Kent Nerburn has a gift of communicating what you would like to share with your son about life but didn't know how. It is easy reading, not intimidating and sends the right messages.

I have been sending a chapter at a time to my son who is now in college. In many ways, the thoughtful and insightful writing by Kent triggered responses that I never would have conferred with my son otherwise.

I found it helpful to write my own thoughts about a particular subject in the margins. I have no idea what my son has thought about these chapters that he receives about every other week. I'd like to think though that it helps him ponder every day life and will be of service in helping judge right from wrong

James Tissot (1836-1902), the wry and urbane observer of manners and fashions, painted scenes of Paris and London "society" that simmered with undercurrents of sexual drama. This beautifully illustrated book presents one hundred of Tissot`s paintings, prints, and watercolors representing each stage of his career. The authors consider Tissot`s themes, interests, and the influences on his work.

Although it was illegal, secret, and against the express commands of his famously mad father, King George IV of England married twice--once for duty and once for love. While Caroline of Brunswick eventually became his lawful queen, it was the beautiful Maria Fitzherbert, recognized as his wife by the Catholic Church but not by the laws of England, who claimed his heart. In the hands of author Diane Haeger, their relationship becomes a mesmerizing love story, filled with intrigue and passion. The characters and drawing rooms of early 19th Century England come alive to create a sexy and vibrant portrait of the age that is colorful and resonant with historical detail.AUTHORBIO: Diane Haeger is the author of THE COURTESAN, published by Pocket, and a number of contemporary romances for HarperCollins. She lives in Newport Beach, California.

(This is a repeat of a previous review-somehow a friend's name got on the original so I am repeating it and correcting my identity).
I only read historical fiction and especially enjoy anything focusing on English history. I have to admit that I knew nothing about the secret relationship of George IV and Maria Fitzherbert and I knew I would have to read this book when I found it on the shelf.
The style of the book was just a step above your typical "romance novel." I could have done without the constant mushy, sugary-sweet romantic dialogue and the overly done descriptions of their romantic encounters (although they were not vulgar). While the intensity of their relationship was clearly conveyed with this type of format, it seemed alittle overdone at times.
I can't say that the book was gripping or that I was unable to put it down, but the author's easy-to-read and fast-paced writing style made reading time go by fast.
All in all, this was a pleasant book about an interesting topic. I am glad that I read it and recommend it to anyone interested in learning alittle more about the secrets of the British monarchy.

I bought this book because I am an English history nut, and I enjoyed Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill (also about Maria FitzHerbert). I was very disappointed. It only follows the bare framework of her life, and is hardly appropriate reading material for respectable people. It paints Maria as a very stupid woman, when in fact, she was extremely smart. She also was more moral than she is portrayed. I am glad that I am not her, because everyone that reads this book without knowing the facts would think that I am the exact opposite of what I stand for. For a better read, try Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill by Jean Plaidy.

The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of the well written. I only wish Ms. Haeger would use her talent more respectfully and truthfully.

3 out of 5 stars The woman who would not be Queen.......2002-11-10

This is the story of the ultimate damsel in distress. When Maria Fitzherbert came to London in the 1784, she knew little about the infamous son of the King, George IV, heir to the throne, other than his reputation. George lived a profligate life as a gambler, womanizer and drunkard. In his early twenties, a few years younger than the widow Fitzherbert, he became obsessed with her, demanding that they marry, although she was a fervent Catholic, abhorrent to the Crown at that time because of her religion. Swayed by the intensity of their mutual passion, the couple secretly married and she was issued a Papal degree of the validity of the union before God.

Rumors were rife: either they were married and breaking the law, which put Maria and her family in jeopardy, or they weren't. But Prince George would make no statement one way or another. Son of the Mad King George III, the impetuous Prince had been feuding with his father for years in a power struggle he, George IV, believed would end soon, upon the death of the King. Frequently ill and raving, it seemed impossible that the King could live very much longer. With this in mind, George IV gambled his future and the success of his marriage, planning for his wife to become his Queen. But there was such antipathy toward the Papists in England at the time that there was no question of a Catholic as Queen.

The couple was extremely happy, although they never had children, and George was able to put his wild youthful ways behind him. Unfortunately, the one constant working against them, time, was immutable. The mad King did not die, but stubbornly continued on until 85 years of age. Meanwhile, George IV temporized his positions in order to appease everyone and keep his wife. He made promises that he was later forced to break, and Maria valued his word above all else. They separated twice, and were unable to reunite, although each mourned the loss of the other over the years.

The story is based on historical fact, but most of the dialog and scenes are pure fiction. Haeger is well known as a Romance writer, and in some areas of the novel, she slips into "Romantic-speak". At these times, the novel loses any sense of believability, although doubtless well researched on appropriate details. But there are frequent asides (in italics), as Maria thinks to herself: "And God help me" she thought."I know I shall never stop loving you". Tightened up and unflounced, this could have been an engaging story of love gone wrong.

                                                4 out of 5 stars A Princely Effort.......2002-10-30

Let me get straight to the point, this novel is fantastic. I was well-informed about the interesting and somewhat sad life of the secret wife of King George IV, so I wasn't too sure how I would feel about reading a novel about her. I mean, I thought I might be bored. I was wrong. Diane Haeger is a talented author, with an ability to create characters that are believable and larger than life. I especially liked her take on Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Most historians paint her as this wonderfully independent woman - see Amanda Foreman's fantastic biography - but Haeger really brings out a bitchy side of Georgiana that made for a great read.

Anyone who likes historical fiction or historical romance will enjoy this novel.

                                                  Book Description

For more than a century Buckingham Palace suppressed the facts about the illicit marriage between the twice-widowed Catholic Maria Fitzherbert and the Prince of Wales, the future George IV. Rumor and scandal began immediately when she met the accomplished if already slightly dissolute Prince of Wales, and even in her obituary, the Times of London pronounced the marriage “either a cruel imposition to silence the scruples of a virtuous though weakminded woman, or an hypocritical pretext adopted by the lady herself to cover her shame.” The Maria that emerges in the pages of biographer James Munson’s pages is neither the unprincipled temptress of her critics nor the romantic heroine of her advocates but rather a complex woman of strong principles, remarkable practicality, iron will, and genuine virtue. For as resolutely as the prince pursued her, Maria steadfastly refused to become his mistress. However much he might want her or she him, she wanted marriage more. Thus was Maria thrust into the political intrigues that underlay the Regency crisis and reign of George IV as well as into one of the most bizarre chapters in the history of the English monarchy. Eight pages of black-and-white photographs add to this “... excellent, entertaining biography-cum-history of this bizarre episode in the history of the English monarchy.”—Booklist (starred) “By far the most exhaustive account of its subject yet written....”—The Sunday Telegraph “Relevant and engaging ... Fitzherbert and her prince make for a lively tale.”—Rocky Mountain News “A life given lively treatment here.”—Publishers Weekly

                                                      Book Description

One of the most extraordinary episodes in British royal history took place on 15 December 1785 when George, Prince of Wales (later Prince Regent and George IV) secretly married the beautiful, twice-widowed and Roman Catholic Maria Fitzherbert. This marriage was in breach of the Royal Marriages Act of 1772 but almost certainly valid in the eyes of the church. If it had been discovered, George might well have forfeited his claim to the throne. As it was, George and Maria lived together for twenty years, and remained deeply attached, despite George's disastrous (and probably bigamous) public marriage to Princess Caroline of Brunswick. The King's Wife is a highly readable account of a love-match that pre-echoes the later relationship of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles. In the eyes of George IV's own family, Maria was his real wife.

I polished off Jean Plaidy's Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill today. It's a vast improvement over Diane Haeger's The Secret Wife of King George IV, and also an improvement over Plaidy's The Third George.

Like the Haeger book, this tells the story of Maria Fitzherbert's marriage to Prince George--or part of the story, anyway, as the novel ends immediately before George's marriage to Caroline. Though the viewpoint shifts between various characters, the focus is mainly on George and his misadventures, at least until the last third or so of the book, when it shifts to the dysfunctional royal family as a whole. (So dysfunctional and featherbrained is this bunch, in fact, that I found myself longing for the Plantagenets, who seem like a breath of sanity by comparison.)

Plaidy's prose is a little less stiff than usual, perhaps because with George III talking to trees, a Madam von Schwellenburg talking to her pet toads ("'Herr Prince vos up to no goot'"), and everyone taking snuff, it's hard not to have a little authorial fun. My only real complaint, in fact, was with the abrupt ending. I'll have to wait until the next book in the series, Indiscretions of the Queen, to see whether George ever comes back to Maria and whether Queen Charlotte ever throws her snuffbox at Prince George.

5 out of 5 stars I'd crowns resign to call thee mine!.......2003-12-13

George IV, when he is Prince of Wales, falls in love with Maria FitzHerbert. Unlike the other women he's fallen in love with, this one refuses to become his mistress. Why doesn't he marry her? There is a slight problem. It is illegal for an heir to the throne of England to marry a Catholic. If he does marry her, he will give up his right. He secretly marries her, and after a few years of happiness, he realized his mistake. But when he realizes it wasn't a mistake, he had already left her. What follows is a lifetime of even more heartbreak for the poor Prince.

If you've read The Secret Wife of King George IV, you may be cautious about reading this one. Don't worry! It is much more respectable and accurate, as are all of Jean Plaidy's works. It is wonderfully and beautifully written, with a haunting historical lesson.

4 out of 5 stars A Foreshadowing of the Duke of Windsor Story.......1998-10-26

Jean Plaidy (Victoria Holt) does a service to readers that writers of historical biographies seem unable to do. She tells a good story and makes the people seem real. Biographies of royalty tend to be stilted, heavily burdened with the intricacies of politics and remote from the person and character of the royal. They are not fun to read. Plaidy's novels are fairly close to historical fact without being tediously so.

The Sweet Lass of Richmond not only is fun to read, it brings to mind an interesting parallel between George IV and his great-great-great nephew, The Duke of Windsor. Both men were the brilliant centers of fashionable society, on bad terms with their fathers, and both fell heedlessly in love with unacceptable, older women. Where Wallis Simpson was a twice-divorced woman, Maria Fitzherbert was a twice-widowed woman. Where Wallis did not mind welcoming her prince into her bedchamber outside of marriage, devotely Catholic Maria Fitzherbert would have nothing less than marriage before she'd consent to give in to her prince. This drove George IV into a secret marriage, a device that allowed him to keep his place in the succession while enjoying the marital favors of the woman he loved. Had this marriage been open, he not only would have been at odds with his father for marrying without the King's consent, he would be barred from the succession for marrying a Catholic. George IV wanted Maria, his crown and his debts paid. George ended up choosing money and the Crown over Maria, his good wife--a choice he regretted for the rest of his life.
