Product Description
25th Anniversary Executive boxed set of four U.S. Zagat Survey guides. Beautiful navy blue set of soft cover books with gilt lettering and page edges.
Tim and Nina Zagat established Zagat Survey® in 1979 by inviting avid diners to rate and review the restaurants they visited. Both native New Yorkers, these two successful Yale educated lawyers applied a unique premise that rating a restaurant on the basis of thousands of experiences was inherently more accurate than relying on one reviewer. Starting with the first Zagat NYC Restaurant Survey, that premise has proven true and Zagat Survey has continued to expand over the last 26 years. The company now offers guides to dining for more than 70 major markets, as well as guides for hotels, resorts and spas worldwide, family travel, entertaining, shopping, nightlife, movies, music, theater and golf.
Book Description
Written by one of our foremost historians and published in 1965,
A Thousand Days is still considered the most complete and definitive portrait of John F. Kennedy and his administration. Handpicked by Kennedy to serve as special assistant to the president, historian and Harvard professor Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. witnessed firsthand the politics and personalities that influenced some of the most important and dramatic events in modern history.
The hundreds of photographs and documents included here have been gleaned from such sources as the John F. Kennedy Library, the Library of Congress, the Associated Press,
Life magazine, and more. The photos capture private meetings with the president, the Bay of Pigs, the Civil Rights movement, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, as well as official White House memoranda, public speeches, social occasions, and private moments with the Kennedy family. These powerful images add a new dimension to the award-winning text and introduce a new generation to some of the most important and visually iconic moments in our recent past.
Customer Reviews:
Complaints of bias miss the point . . . badly.......2007-08-27
The value of A Thousand Days is self-apparent to anyone who has ever attempted to seriously examine the policies of the Kennedy administration.
Arthur Schlesinger Jr., with an undeniably skilled pen and an exhaustive eye for detail, compiled one of the most thorough accounts of the Kennedy administration. I don't see how it could be that surprising, at this point in time, that participants in an administration generally tend to write books that view their president in a favorable light. Is anyone really that shocked?
Did he take an interest in JFK's love life or other prurient topics? No. Did he seek to write a definitive evaluation of the president? No. Schlesinger is honest - he is writing by and large as a participant and an observer and the value of this account is that it captures the outlook and motivations of the administration. He left it to other authors to write more critical accounts - the value his book holds comes from the personal observations he makes throughout it.
You don't have to like Kennedy to find this book valuable. Plenty of people critical of the Kennedy administration have studied this book carefully. Its value as a firsthand account of the administration is self-apparent. If it happens to challenge the Limbaugh right's view of JFK . . . well, oh well. The rest of us can approach this book with care and real interest, allow for natural instances of human bias, and still come away better informed for the effort.
Informative but Biased.......2005-03-01
Schlesinger starts out by stating in the forward, "This work is not a comprehensive history of the Kennedy Presidency. It is a personal memoir by one who served in the White House during the Kennedy years." In the first two sentences, Schlesinger tells his first two lies.
There is no way that this can be considered a memoir, especially when on countless occasions Schlesinger himself admits that he was not involved nor really informed about issues. How can it be considered a memoir when he is basing his statements at times purely on documents? That is a "comprehensive history" and not a "personal memoir."
Despite Schlesinger's failure in his initial task, he does tell the history of the administration in great, albeit bias, depth. It is tough to avoid repetition over 1031 pages, but Schlesinger does a good job avoiding informing me of the same thing in three different ways. As well, he interlocks the history from chapter to chapter and explains its interconnectedness to defend Kennedy. Schlesinger attempts to tie the domestic problems such as the U.S. Steel company raising its prices into foreign policy. It is doubtful that his foreign successes and failures would have been any different without the U.S. Steel controversy, except to Schlesinger.
As Schlesinger admits, he overstates the importance of the advisors, especially himself. Regardless of what he did, he manages to mention himself in every chapter in a last ditch attempt to memoirize this history. Sometimes he did something, other times he just had a conversation with the president. On another occasion, to include himself in the chapter he writes about how he jumped in a swimming pool when Mrs. Ethel Kennedy fell in. For the first time and only time on that one page, it is a memoir.
Despite the excessively pro-Kennedy attitude, Schlesinger does manage to vividly describe the administration. He takes us around the world from Southeast Asia with Vietnam and Laos to Africa with the dealing with Sekou Toure and other Moscow-leaning leaders to Europe and troubles pleasing De Gaulle and keeping control of the Americas despite Castro. The foreign policy of the administration is explored, if not fairly criticized, for most of the book. He is less in depth on domestic policy, however he devotes a good 150 pages to the Civil Rights Movement and the budget and congressional legislation. He also attempts quite successfully to argue the point that Kennedy failed to keep the people up to date on what was going on in the world. He even elevated Kennedy above his even more beloved Roosevelt by stating that FDR addressed the nation "no more than two (times) a year" before the war compared to Kennedy averaging three a year. Kennedy also frequently made speeches at colleges such as American and Yale.
Almost as common as the Kennedy praising was the Eisenhower bashing. He over-generalizes the conservatism of the Eisenhower administration and he criticizes some things that Kennedy adopts and praises Kennedy for adopting, such as the large peacetime budget deficit. Conversely, he over-generalizes the liberalism of the Kennedy administration. The changes made were on a large-scale slight. The only major policy change was the change from defeating communism to containing it. And even that change was only a spoken change as proven by the Bay of Pigs and the continued hope for an overthrow of Castro.
Overall, Schlesinger does a good job organizing the book logically. With two exceptions, everything follows with at least a logical flow. Only in the middle when he changes from foreign to domestic policy and a few chapters later when he goes back to foreign policy does the reader need to stop and readjust himself (well, also when he starts talking about the swimming pool incident).
The history is accurate, even if it is bias, and it is an interesting, but long read. If you don't mind the bias or don't want to form your own opinion, it is worth the read. At least you are warned.
Camelot's court historian writes nostalgic gush.......2004-09-17
Simply put, this is one of the books that shattered Schlesinger's credibility as a legitimate historian once and for all. Once he was "Artie," the precocious high-flying historian/prodigy, amazing his peers & elders with his dazzling talents as an author & scholar. Now he is a superannuated peddler of Camelot nostalgia and a defender of a school of thought that has been so thoroughly discredited over the years that it truly is a wonder that anyone takes Schlesinger seriously anymore. Really, the only author/historian that is worse in this field is possibly Manchester.
How can anyone regard this stuff as serious history? It is as though Schlesinger has sustained a sort of man-crush on JFK for all these years and cannot bring himself to be even remotely objective about a rather undistinguished administration. He really contributes nothing to this field of study, so save yourself the effort of reading this tripe.
Love Letters to JFK.......2004-05-15
A Thousand Days could hardly be classified as history and basically is an emotionally charged admiration of the 35th President. However, it is one of the classics that helped proliferate the Camelot myth that, unfortunately, continues to persist to this day.
An excellent read.......2004-05-07
In A Thousand Days Schlesinger offers us a view of the Kennedy White House that few other authors can provide. He is able to give us his unique perspective on the actual inside workings of the Kennedy administration. This book does have its drawbacks. It is certainly not an objective look at the historical Kennedy, this being an issue that many take with the book. It does not pretend to be one however. Rather the book must be read while keeping in mind who the author is. Schlesinger, a life long admirer and defender of Kennedy, certainly puts his spin on the events mentioned in the book. If this book is read with that in mind it is possible to deepen your understanding of who Kennedy was and what he did, making this a book well worth a read.
Customer Reviews:
Boring and Overly Long.......2006-11-08
The only book by Arthur Schlesinger that I have read is his book about Robert Kennedy (Robert Kennedy and His Times). Now THAT book was good. Why? I suppose I did not know much about RFK and I was thoroughy intrigued by what I read. However, I have read many more books about JFK and, as a result, I was expecting pretty much similar stuff that I had already read about JFK.
Unfortunately, Schlesinger's book was quite a bore. He went on and on about his legacy - information that I really did not care for. For example, he wrote lots of information about his Latin American policies, his policies with respect to diversity and the third world, how he handled getting rid of certain member of his cabinet, and on and on.
The only interesting parts of the book were the topics about Berlin, Viet Nam, and the Cuban missle crises. The rest was a bore.
This book covers his political agendas and how he handled them. It's got nothing to do about JFK's womanizing, Frank Sinatra, the mob, or JFK's dad. If that is what you are interested in, forget this book!

Story of JFK in the White House.
Book Description
"Barbara LaSalle's new book . . . beautifully chronicles her own journey to understand her son with the encyclopedic mind and distressingly separate world."
--Washington Post
Born with a superanalytical mind, Ben could store information like a minicomputer. Yet beneath his gift for facts lay a great fear of change and social aloofness. Ben had Asperger's Syndrome --a neurobiological disease similar to autism. Honest and beautifully written, Finding Ben is both a look at a mercurial disease and a powerful story of one mother's journey from frustration and resentment to love and acceptance.
Customer Reviews:
no happy ending.......2007-03-06
The book certainly was depressing but I kept reading it because the cover had promised a 'happy ending'. I'm sorry, but I did not see the happy ending. All I read about was Ben who had to struggle much more against rigid expectation than with his developmental disability. And his mother who went from "why is my son so different, I am disgusted by him" to "it is not my fault but he still disgusts me" to "look-at-me I can interact with my son without feeling disgusted and I am a 'tireless advocate for people with dissabilities'". I am sorry, but she needs to get over herself in the worst way. I know that is probably not entirely fair of me to say. I can accept Ben as a person with Aspergers and maybe I should accept that his mother is who she is. I would think that she is a Type A and going from trying to fix her son to 'I m an advocate - let's write a book about it', might be a huge improvement, but it is still the flipside of the same coin.
I have a son with high functioning autism and I can related to having your heart sink every time you realize how different your child ticks. I am awake at night worrying how his life will be. But I always knew that my job was to love and protect. Parenting will teach you about yourself but at the end of the day it is about your child not you.
Amazing story .......2006-07-26
Reads like a novel. Very honest. I would recommend this book to everyone I know.
I bought this book because my daughter suspected her child of having Asperger's syndrome. I knew nothing of the disease. This book not only helped me understand it, but it also gave me much insight into my own grandson's world.
I liked the way it was written. Simple and honest. Much better than reading a lengthy, technical book on the disease.
Read it, you'll gasp, laugh and cry.
A Resonant Voice.......2005-12-31
Finally, a resonant voice in the mire of books on special needs that isn't overloaded with technical detail. What distinguishes this book from others is that Barbara La Salle lets her anger, regret, and fury fly forth --an honest voice amid the cries by everyone else to "hush up, be strong, compassionate, and a veritable pillar of strength" even though deep inside you are cracking up.
Anyone with a special needs child faces frustration. Unfortunately, most of the books out there demand that you either take the countenance of Oprah Winfrey or Dr. Phil. Everything isn't okay, and Barbara LaSalle, who is both the mother of her son Ben and also a therapist, let's that old stereotype take a pounding. She talks about her regrets, her failures, and her slow acceptance that not everything about her son is her fault. Her son Ben also writes part of the book. His voice is important to show that people with Asperger's struggle, but have a conscience worth hearing and learning from.
Her story is moving, and it is also honest and shocking. I'd recommend this to all parents, spouses of Asperger's patients, as well as Asperger's patients because they have to understand that until you can identify your own anger, you can never move beyond it.
Nicely told, the only regret I have is that a bit more attention to editing and structure from a writing standpoint would have made it move a bit quicker and avoid some of the repetition that befalls it.
Heartbreaking and Depressing.......2005-06-02
I have a high-functioning autistic son who is very like Ben in many ways, and I was horrified at this mother's attitude! While I applaud her for her honesty in admitting all her faults, I can't help but feel that Ben's life would have turned out very differently if she had accepted him as he was. This is the story of a great tragedy, the loss of 33 years of this young man's life.
I was a "goody-two-shoes" when I was a child, always trying to please the "grown-ups" and fit their expectations. But as I grew up, I realized that I would have to make my own decisions, ESPECIALLY when it came to my child! Obviously, this mother did not. No matter what my family said, no matter that the doctors accused me of being an "overly protective Mom", I knew my child was this way because of something internal to him, and that his behavior was not his fault!
When I finally found a doctor who recognized his autism (at age 4), I realized that the truism is correct; "a mother knows best." But even if I had not received the diagnosis, I would never have behaved the way this mother did. She betrayed her son because SHE wanted to fit in, to be a "good girl." This story broke my heart for the sake of Ben, and I am still depressed after reading it several days ago.
I believe that most mothers will love and accept their chid, no matter how strange he is. And I believe that is one of the most important things we can do for them! If you want to see what NOT to do, this is the book for you!
A book for ALL parents.......2005-02-24
This book tells the heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting story of a family's journey through the difficult issues presented by Aspergers. My recommendation, though, is that all parents should consider reading this book. It is a wonderful look at the frustrations we all feel, the self-doubt and self-loathing and even those moments when we wonder why we ever had children. I cried when I read this book, it is so brave and loving and heartfelt. Even if your child doesn't have special needs, you should consider reading this book for the wonderful honesty.

Book Description
Knotting, "the joining of two cords," is an old and revered art form in China and an integral part of Chinese life. Since ancient times, Chinese knots have been used for a variety of practical and decorative purposes: to record events, aid in fishing and hunting, wrap and tie items, embellish personal attire, ornament other works of art, and communicate. The intricate knot work and magnificent color combinations not only lent elegance to everyday objects, or a touch of gaiety and enchantment, but were an aesthetic expression of Chinese folk symbolism, expressing wishes for good fortune and wealth or the joys of love and marriage.
In Chinese Knotting, author Lydia Chen first traces the origins, history, and symbolism of this fascinating craft, before taking the reader through the fundamental elements necessary for tying Chinese decorative knots-the materials, implements, and main processes. Step-by-step instructions are then given for the 11 basic knots, which provide the building blocks for the 14 compound knots-combinations and variations of the simple knots-that follow in the next section. The final section presents 41 knotting projects of varying difficulty. Detailed instructions, clear diagrams, and color photographs, combined with an exciting assortment of creative applications will help readers discover the relaxation, artistic satisfaction, and beautifully personalized ornamentation that Chinese knotting can offer.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-05-13
Although the projects are interesting, it is a very old edition, so it seems very retro. I didn't like it that much.
Beautiful knotting book.......2007-04-25
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I purchased it quite recently because I've become interested in a wider range of knotting skills than tatting, which is my main speciality.
The book when it arrived was a lovely surprise. The introductory pages contain a synopsis of Chinese knotting history accompanied by full colour photographs of the knots in use to make practical and decorative items. The diagrams are clear enough though the knots very quickly become rather elaborate for a complete beginner learning straight from the book with no teacher to demonstrate. However patience and taking time to study the very accurate diagrams carefully will alleviate this problem. The other difficulty I encountered, particularly when reaching the stage of learning the Pan Chang Knot, was knowing how much string would be needed. No indication of this is given next the knots themselves though early on in the book it is mentioned that most can be tied with a length of three metre cord. Admittedly the amount required would depend on the thickness of the cord used, but some guidance would be helpful.
A series of projects is provided in the third part of the book, giving inspiration and instruction in using the knots in different ways. The diagrams of the projects are rather small so you would have to practice the knots themselves diligently until you can do them easily before attempting one of the projects.
However this is a very attractive book giving an interesting insight into the ancient art of Chinese knotting and I certainly recommend it for anyone interested in Chinese culture and for anyone who would like to learn Chinese knotwork.
great book for crafts!.......2007-02-14
Detailed pictures on how to do each knot, from begining knots to the more complicated knots. To a multi-talented crafter, a must have. Great book!
A bit overwhelming for a beginner..........2006-05-21
I just started into Chinese knotting. Though this book has beautiful photos/ideas, the projects are more advanced so the instruction photos/directions were insufficient for me to grasp how to create the beautiful projects. If you're a novice, look elsewhere. I returned mine. Gave it 4 stars just because it isn't for everyone.
First time knotter.......2006-03-19
First, I haven't actually tried the knots in the book. But I have enjoyed reading the history of Chinese Knotting. And the diagrams and instructions look clear and easy to follow. Some of the photos are clearly from the 80's, but the basic knots are timeless.
Product Description
The art of knotting is an old and revered part of Chinese life. Used for a variety of practical and decorative purposes over the centuries, Chinese knotwork is intricate and full of magnificent color combinations that lend elegance to everyday objects.
In Fun with Chinese Knotting, author Lydia Chen focuses on Chinese knots as fashion accessories hair ornaments, earrings, necklaces, pendants, brooches, belts, bracelets and anklets and as accents on clothing. Detailed instructions, clear diagrams, and beautiful color photographs illustrating the creative use of Chinese knots and the variety of materials used make this book attractive, useful and a source of inspiration for craftspeople everywhere.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Book.......2007-01-13
I had been looking for a "to do" list for baby planning online and wasn't having any luck. I wanted something that would tell me "by the time you're 3 months along, have these things done." These being my first children (twins), I wasn't sure what I should be doing or when. This book was exactly what I was looking for. Though it isn't written specifically for multiples, it still works for them. The author is actually a mother of twins herself. My twins are almost a year old and I still use the book to write down questions for the pediatrician and gifts the kids receive. Not only was it great for preparing for the babies, it will be a wonderful memento later, as it has spaces for all of your doctor appointments, the birth information, hospital visitors, pediatrician appointments and more.
Some good info but not much of an organizer.......2007-01-08
While I find some of the checklists and suggestions useful, I found it difficult to use as an organizer. I would have liked pockets to hold receipts and appointment cards, a calendar and so on. I found it difficult to locate the pages where I could write in appointment information and if I squeezed in a new appointment, I had to put it on a later page since there are only 3 appts. per page. In the end, I tossed it aside and just moved back to my daytimer. Overall, I'm sorry I spent any money on it.
List makers dream.......2007-01-04
While preparing for baby can be an uncertain and scary time, this book brings some order and organization to the planning process. Keeping track of medical bills, doctor appointments, weight gain, barrowed goods, furniture dimensions and purchases for the little one has been extremely helpful for my peace and sanity. I carry this book wherever I go. I would highly recommend this book to anyone expecting. I have loaned it to friends who recently had babies and they added thier own notes as well. It was exactly what I was looking for!
Best Book to Get Ready for baby.......2006-12-27
I used this book when I was preparing for the birth of our first baby. It had practical advice and helped me to focus on what was REALLY important to have in place before the baby came. Most first time mom's aren't really sure what all is needed or required to make the transition to motherhood smooth and I found this book invaluable! I recommend it to all first time moms and have given it to just about everyone I know that is having a baby for the first time. Its also a great reference for subsequent children just to make sure you remember what you need to have in place. I can't say enough about this book. Every mom-to-be should have this book.
Get it, you won't regret it!.......2006-10-09
I got this book as a gift very early in my pregnancy. I was a little overwhelmed at first because this lady has remembered everything and it seems like to much to do before the baby got here. I found that I used as a guide and didn't get too picky about the little details. I recomend this for everyone before their first baby. It helps to remind you of all the things you didn't think of. I now give them as baby shower gifts! Get it, you will not regret it!

A Giacometti Portrait

Book Description
The Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-66) was arguably the greatest sculptor of the twentieth century. He was also--as James Lord persuasively argued in Giacometti: A Biography--a heroic figure whose vocation sustained him through a life of crippling anxiety and erotic guilt.
Almost twenty years after it first appeared, Giacometti has attained the status of a classic, one of the most candid and complete biographies of an artist in our time. In Mythic Giacometti, Lord reveals the hidden "blueprint" of that work: a daringly literal, visionary interpretation of the myth of Oedipus as it affected the conduct and outcome of Giacometti's life. The result is a case study both in the development of an artist and in the writing of biography. Lord concentrates on the private totems of Giacometti's life-family legend, childhood memory,
illness and injury, crucial sexual encounters, intimations of mortality-that amounted, in Lord's view, to signs of a tragic destiny directly linked to the central tragedy of Western literature.

Book Description
A classic, highly readable biography of one of Britain's finest Second World War generals. Raised in near poverty, Field-Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck became the first English commander of World War II to defeat a German general in battle: Rommel in the first Alamein in 1942. Yet this victory was dismissed and is now nearly forgotten. This complex "soldier's soldier" comes vividly to life, reclaimed for posterity, in this portrait, including his controversial role in the turbulent days of India's partition.
