revision of Jane.......2000-05-02
'The Anatomy of Wood' by K.Wilson & DJB.White is a revision of F.W.Jane's 'The Structure of Wood'. Essentially the latter was the basic British introductory text on wood, long since out of print and a much missed classic. Quite a bit of the contents, especially the very clear diagnostic drawings, survived into 'The Anatomy of Wood'. Unfortunately the printing quality is a bit faint, so that above mentioned drawings lack contrast.

Book Description
This popular book in the Travelers’ Tales Destination Series weaves a tapestry of sensory images, profound transformations, and compelling history about a land that has lured and puzzled travelers for centuries and continues to do so today. Now in a new edition, Travelers' Tales India includes 49 stories and dozens of sidebar anecdotes covering the sprawling canvas of the country, from the high Himalayas to the dense jungles teeming with wildlife, to the chaotic inner cities and deceptively slow-paced villages. Among the stories: Jan Haag participates in a traditional Indian wedding, noted chef Madhur Jaffrey feasts on food for body and soul, Jonah Blank encounters the caretakers of the dead on the Ganges, William Dalrymple penetrates the mysteries of the Sufi masters, and David Yeadon takes a bath with 15 million people.

launching point for learning about India or planning a trip to India.......2006-10-08
I'm giving this book five stars not because the individual travel stories comprising this are five star stories (though many of them are), but because the breadth of subject matter and perspectives this book offers are remarkable. From the frosty passes of the Himalayas to the bustling streets of Calcutta, from the Ganges to shores of Goa, from the rarely-visited tribal interior to the even more desolate Rann of Kutch, this book portrays a country with a topography perhaps as diverse as Europe's. From the barriers of caste to the oppression of women, this book portrays a social evolution still in progress but with roots in ancient times.
Highlights for me included Rory Nugent's eccentric search for the supposedly extinct pink-headed duck, and David Yeadon's brilliant portrayal of character interactions (including an Indian interrupting his narrative digression in real time "Sir, are you hearing me, sir?"). For every traveler that timidly scratched the surface of India without real discovery (such as a particularly uptight and sheltered Oxford Fellow's first trip) there was one so recklessly bold that you're glad you could relive the experience from the safety of your own home (including one author's visit to a tribal island where past visitors had been killed). Somewhere in the middle there's bound to be powerful inspiration for a trip of one's own.
Reading this book was not only satisfying, but served as a launching point for future reading of the complete works from which these tales were excerpted (David Yeadon's Back of the Beyond and Jonah Blank's Arrow of the Blue Skinned God seemed particularly interesting to me).
Vicariously experience the best and worst of India.......2004-07-23
I read this book after reading the DK guide to India and Leila Hadley?s A Journey with Elsa Cloud (the latter is about a tour of parts of India in the 70s). This excellent collection of true stories really made all the places come alive and gave me a much richer and fuller sense of India than I could get from just Hadley?s book. The poverty, sexism, and daily encounters with excrement that are a part of life in India are compellingly conveyed at the same time as we come to feel the vast heavy weight of so many centuries of history, so much spiritual questing, so much diminished glory. Since I finished the book, I have found myself repeating stories to friends from the excerpts from Rory Nugent?s The Search for the Pink-Headed Duck and from Mark Shand?s Travels on My Elephant, which were particularly vivid and fascinating to me. There are a suprising number of tales featuring cyclists--evidently India is a popular place to tour by bike.

By the time you read the first of these "Traveler's Tales," you'll be flipping to the back of the book to find out more about how to get to Nepal. The country's beguiling mysteries are revealed by teachers, musicians, photographers, poets, and authors such as Peter Matthiessen and Broughton Coburn. Carefully selected quotes from other writers end every section, helping to give another perspective on each theme.
Charlie Pye-Smith sums up the essence of this collection in Travels in Nepal: A Sequestered Kingdom: "I believe that there are a few memories which we carry with us beyond death and from which we shall never be free.... Perhaps it is just a smile or a strand of hair or the smell of warm breath, caught in a chunk of light and time and frozen like a fly in amber. But sometimes there is more than that, a whole world with movement and sound and changing colour."
Book Description
Nepal is renowned for its temples, shrines, palaces, amazing mountains and jungles, and colorful festivals. Ever since it began admitting tourists in the early 1950s, its remarkable blend of cultures, traditions, and languages has stirred the longings and fantasies of travelers of every stripe. The foreign spiritual seeker soon discovers that there are more temples, gompas, gurus, sadhus, and rinpoches in Nepal than cereal brands in the U.S. This collection celebrates the country with pieces by Peter Matthiessen, Jeff Greenwald, Meg Lukens Noonan, Broughton Coburn, Diane Summers, Jimmy Carter, Susan Vreeland, and Jan Morris.

Essential for anyone interested in Nepal.......2004-03-13
This collection of essays and excerpts about Nepal and her people greatly exceeded my expecations. The editor displayed refreshingly high standards when it came to picking which authors to include. The writing is of high quality, and the vast range of works included gives you an thorough, unvarnished look at all aspects of life and travel in Nepal. Taken together the entries accomplish the difficult task of helping the visitor-to--be know what it will FEEL like to be there.
You just don't get this kind of stuff out of guidebooks.
The book has enhanced my trip preparations and brought my excitement about going to Nepal to a fever pitch. I highly recommend this to anyone about to make a similar journey.
I hope to find more books in this series available for all the other countries on my travel wish list.
A charming cultural portrait of a fascinating land.......2001-03-24
Traveler's Tales is the postmodern guidebook. Instead of lists of iteneraries, temple admission prices and grainy photos, the authors of this book allow the reader to imagine Nepal in all of its tantalizing fullness. The excerpts selected range on topic and style, but all present unique aspects of the Nepali experience-- rural and urban, male and female, touristic and holistic. In opening the pages you can smell the spice markets, hear the chants of priests, feel the grinding poverty, inhale the crystalline Himalayan air and allow yourself to be carried down the narrow alleys of Pokhara. After reading Traveler's Tales: Nepal, I assue you you'll immediately run to Expedia to check fares to Kathmandu.
A great supplement to any travel book like Lonely planet!.......2000-08-01
I loved this book, it was a great travel book. This book gave me insights into the culture and beliefs of Nepal, not just places to stay or to eat like most travel books. All of the stories were unique and made me really excited to hop on a plane and travel there. With this book I know what to expect once I get there and know enough not to offend their culture as an American.
I recommend using this to supplement a Fromer's or Lonely planet travel book.
encompasses all the diverse aspects of Nepal.......1999-10-25
Reading this book is indeed a great experience. I am really thankful that people abroad have made the effort to introduce Nepal's romantic realities to the world. I am sure that anyone who wants to know about Nepal would definitely benefit from this book. I am glad that I bought this book and learnt so much about my own country. To be honest though being a native, I was not familiar with the panoromic details about Nepal that the book has captured. After reading various tales collected in the book I am inspired to visit those beautiful places and experience the joy myself.
Why I'm going back there again........1998-07-07
Why is Nepal so magical that people keep on coming back ? Well, you may find the answers after reading the wonderful collection of short stories. I liked it because the stories selected were, most importantly easy to read and short enough for busy people.Inside the 5 chapters you'll find writers like Peter Matthiesen (The Snow Leopard) and Manjushree Thapa (Meanderings in Mustang), both of whom were privileged enough to enter the forbidden lands I got so close to (I only got as far in as Kagbeni,Lower Mustang !). I found Broughton Coburn's (A Nosy neighbor) account of his encounter with a leech most enlightening and amusing. Tears flowed forth after reading Robert J Matthews's (A Simple Gift) and Allan Aistrope's (Virtue's Children), if you've been there you'll know why.Having gone trekking I'd certainly put Jack Bennett's (The Art of Walking) into good use the next time. In Susan Vreeland's (Do Buddhists Cry?), you get an insight of the selflessness of the native people there and you begin to wonder if we really are the more civilized ?. I thought that the addition of short quotes and highlights from other writers added in-between and at the end of each stories were nice, as at a glance you see how others fared in similar fates. My ambitions of writing a journal of my visit is out the window - I'll just share this book to anyone who wants to know how I felt exactly when I was there.Buy this book !

fabulous collection of short travel stories.......2006-09-30
The stories are from all far corners of the country and really
get to the soul of the region is it set in.
I would highly recommend this book to most people, Indians or
non-Indians, they would enjoy learning about the country and
possibly even making travel plans based on the stories and locations
listed in the book.
I've so far bought four copies of this book and gifted three of
them to my friends.
India Tales.......2000-08-14
This book gave a great insight into the world of India! It had so much information about things that most people would not ever have the chance to experience. It is great reading!
A nice taste before you go........1998-01-04
This series offers a really nice way of getting insight into India's culture. The stories are well written and entertaining and it covers lots of different aspects of India -- from religion to customs and the way people think. We just returned from a trip to India and brought it along for reading on the flight over.
Many perspectives, one book.......1997-01-25
A collection of many essays, book excerpts and stories from many different authors about travelling in India. Nearly every aspect of travel in India is covered: heliskiing in the Himalayas, staying at ashrams, being sick, travel in the women's compartment of trains, standing in a monsoon, bicycling from Leh to Pakistan, riding with a truck driver. Some essays cover unique aspects of the society, such as the enterprising dish-wallahs who set up a satellite dish and sell cable tv to an apartment building or two. Several of the source books are now out of print, making this collection particularly valuable
Book Description
By May 1991, one of the world's most ruthless terrorist groups, the Shining Path, had left 30,000 known dead in its 10-year guerilla war against the Peruvian government. At dusk on May 21, 1991 in the Andean town of Huasahuasi, a silver-haired Australian woman became part of the horrifying death toll. Sister Irene McCormack, a Catholic nun, was executed after a mock trial that saw a young woman terrorist label her a Yankee Imperialist before firing a bullet at point-blank range into the back of her head.
Anne Henderson goes beyond the headlines to ask what makes a woman leave the safety of Australia to travel to an impoverished village in rural Peru, and asks, just who exactly was Irene McCormack?

Precise Piecing.......2007-02-23
I really like this technique. It allows for uniform sized blocks if you follow instructions and use the rulers as stated. The 12" blocks are quicker and easier than the 6" blocks, some of them were a challenge. I've done the large blocks twice, the small only once. I really enjoyed working from this book and will do some of these blocks again. Using reproduction fabrics from the Civil War era, this quilt is very attractive. I will be giving them as gifts. RR
Great Quilt ~ Directions are AWFUL!.......2006-05-31
First off ~ I must say the quilt will be lovely when put together, I have added the sashing and I made flying geese for the border of this quilt...next comes the hand quilting. And the story of each block is nice too.
But PLEASE do not follow her directions, they are awful. After many attempts at her directions, I ended up following the old standby directions for the blocks. It's quite easy if you look at the size the pieces of the block should be before sewing them together. For some reason she uses more steps then needed to make a block. Do not buy her Flying Geese template...waste of money. There are a lot of errors in the measurements, especially in the Bear Paw block..if you follow her directions you'll end up 1/2" too big (claw part). I had to square them down to size after the second attempt.
A nice quilt...bad directions...not a Quilt in a Day, but worth the try.
READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST........2005-10-25
I have been quilting for about 3 years. Like many of the other people who wrote a review, I found it difficult to follow some of the instructions. To get it right, I had to take my time and make sure the cutting and sewing was exact. It is a great challenge and it has made me a more precise sewer. You don't need to be an expert quilter but having some quilting knowledge would help. Even with some parts being difficult the end results are worth while.
The Undergound Railroad Sampler-Eleanor Burns.......2005-10-22
This book has many features that are not in other quilt books. Tthis book shows you short cuts to the flying geese, & it show many good time saving techniques to shorten your time behind the sewing machine, and it's one of Eleanor Burns best books ever. Everything is so user-friendly and a great book to use for a quilt/sewing class. Everyone should have this book for the easy to follow time saving techniques.
the company had the books to me within a week...great shipping!!!
The Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt.......2005-10-14
Eleanor Burns has written the book so that anyone with begining quilting skills would have no problems in making this quilt. She tells you how much fabric you need for each color of fabric. At the begining of each block there is a list of tools that you will need. Each block is broken down step by step in easy to follow directions.

If certain movies can earn "two hanky" ratings for their ability to induce tears, Sal Severe's How to Behave So Your Preschooler Will, Too easily deserves a "two highlighter" rating for its bountiful collection of noteworthy parenting strategies. From the hilarious opening anecdote about his 4-year-old's verbal attack on a waiter to his reassuring final chapter ("From Cookies to Car Keys"), Severe's candor, practical advice, and savvy long-term vision offer quick relief for overwhelmed parents of 3- to 6-year-olds. The moral of this school psychologist's story: Language counts; use it wisely. Yelling, spanking, and knee-jerk time-outs do little to correct misconduct, and may promote more misbehavior. Instead, Severe champions positive, age-appropriate phrases to curb the whining, parry the potty words, and morph fights into sharing sessions. He shows how to formulate meaningful consequences for little rule breakers and how to wield the parents' ultimate "better behavior" tool: consistency. Literally hundreds of clever catch phrases (void of the word don't), sample dialogues, anger-management techniques, written exercises, and tips on tweaking inadequate corrective measures flow throughout Severe's 25 standalone chapters. An ample book list that offers suggested parent/child reading on dozens of topics nicely caps off this exemplary guide. --Liane Emory Thomas
Book Description
Dr. Sal Severe established himself as a leading childcare and parenting expert with his phenomenally successful How to Behave So Your Children Will, Too! Now he focuses on raising children between the ages of three and six. Based on Dr. SevereÂ's philosophy that childrenÂ's behavior often reflects that of their parents, this book teaches readers how to better handle a host of issues, from fussing at bedtime and temper tantrums to toilet training and sibling rivalry. Instead of focusing on what children do wrong, Severe teaches parents what they can do right by emphasizing the positive, being consistent, and being more patient. Filled with checklists, an extensive resource guide to books that parents can read with their preschoolers, and plenty of inspiration, this goldmine of helpful advice is certain to become a bible for stressed-out parents everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
How to behave so your preschoolers will, too.......2007-09-18
Thank you for the prompt transaction. The book is as I expected. I rate my experience as A+++. I have absolutely no reservations of ordering again from this seller.
Works wonders, and so simple to implement.......2007-07-07
I was going through a rough patch with my son - 2 1/2yrs. This book is a great reminder that we must teach our children how to behave, rather than just controlling their behavior. It gives real situations and clear guidelines to help parent and child get through them with the best outcome. I love it!
Disneylayne.......2007-04-11
Great for EXPECTANT PARENTS, PARENTS AND PRESCHOOL PROFESSIONALS.
GREAT BOOK AND GIVE TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS.
REMEMBER PARENTS, THE LITTLE ONES ARE WATCHING YOU.
Priceless book. A MUST HAVE.......2006-10-24
This book is a god-send. It assured me within the FIRST chapter that my 3 year old is not trying to make my life miserable with the demanding, disobeying, etc. Easy to follow instructions, easy to read... very informative and pertinent. Has absolutely made a difference. THIS is a great book.. I recommend it to EVERYONE!
I *Have* Learned How to Behave!.......2005-07-19
I purchased "How to Behave" when my eldest was 16 months old and have picked it up again now that she (5) and her brother (3) have reached new developmental stages and developed 'new', not so desirable habits'.
I have found, over the years, that the author is correct; that most of my children's 'behaviors' are the result of my behaviors; essentially what I have `taught' them is permissible behavior. Misbehavior is not something innate in children, it is learned. And it is true, when I see them doing something I dislike, I usually find that it is a variation of something that I have allowed or taught them to do. [Take yelling for example. When my eldest started being `loud', I discovered that I had fallen back into my old habit of yelling.]
In this book though, Dr. Severe outlines not just one, but a number of approaches that a parent can use to resolve misbehaviors. Not only by correcting your own -LOL. And unlike other books, he gives role playing examples with sample dialog and actions so that you know exactly what sort of things you ought to say and do. No trying to guess what the author intent is.
Overall, a very useful and insightful book. But it if you are the sort of person who can't imagine that you *personally* are doing something wrong that is aiding and abetting your child's misbehavior, then this book will probably not help your family.
Four stars - A very good and useful book, minus one star for not being the easiest read.
Book Description
Ralph Rapson is the most influential Minnesota architect of the twentieth century. Architect, artist, furniture designer, and teacher, he has played a leading role in the development and practice of modern architecture and design, both nationally and internationally. Beginning in the late 1930s, at Cranbrook under Eliel Saarinen, Rapson became famous for his rapid, exquisite renderings and his creative reexamination of traditional furniture and housing forms. He also began a career-long involvement in architectural competitions and experimental programs that helped shape the future of modernism in America. In postwar Europe, his designs for nine U.S. embassy projects established a new international model for the American embassy abroad.
In 1954 Rapson assumed leadership of the University of Minnesota's School of Architecture, beginning a thirty-year tenure that would transform not only the school itself but the standing of the design profession within the state.
Over sixty years and against the tides and assaults of architectural fads and fashion, Ralph Rapson has maintained a consistency and commitment to the basic and best principles of modern architecture, unswervingly and without distraction. He has never lost sight of the larger questions of architectureits potential for community betterment and enrichment of the human experience.
Customer Reviews:
Back to the Future.......2006-03-06
Mr. Rapson's most significant works took place at a time in architectural history where, "everything was possible" and the future was limited only by one's imagination. It's the attitude that inspired this current generation of architects to go into the field. Anyone who remembers Disneyland's, Tomorrowland will be impressed with this book. It has struck childhood memories of the future as well as serving as a reminder of why I entered the profession.
This book captures that spirit and is replete with drawings and pictures that tell the story of this amazing and underrated architect. In the brief time I've spent with the book, I've been awestruck at the depth and breadth of the work this man produced. He embodied modernism at its best. This is a very comprehensive book detailing Mr. Rapson's life.
Humanizing a modernist icon.......2001-09-07
While most monographs focus on raising an architect to that of a deity, the story of Rapson remains quite simply a story. Along with the drawings, buildings, and furniture which made Rapson famous (which is well displayed), a timeline of Rapson's professional and personal life allows the reader to gain more insight as to some of the formitive forces of his designs. As any purveyor or architecture may know, design is quite interdisciplinary, and often design descisions are based on firmly rooted 'everyday-life' ideals and experience, not solely as a spark of genious to the gifted few. This book reflects not only the genioius of Rapson's work, but also the real life story which had an equally profound impact.

Book Description
This book pioneers a spatial approach to the problems of land use by bringing together models in economics, ecology and hydrology, and summarises the results of innovative research funded by the United Kingdom's Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Ideas of economic value which bring about most changes in land use are linked with the biophysical processes in the environment likely to be affected as a result of these changes. It demonstrates, with the aid of case studies, how these models can be combined into a strategic system for guiding decision making and analysing land use policies.

Book Description
Provides a definitive source of information on the environmental, non-target and human safety aspects of using the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) as a biological control agent. B.t. is used worldwide as an effective agent for controlling many species of insect pest, either by crop spraying or genetic engineering of crop plants. Recently questions have been raised due to health concerns over inhalation of the bacterial spores, and fears of gene-swapping. This reference provides a well-balanced comprehensive discussion on the subject.

Book Description
Jim Callaghan's career in British public life is unique. Starting in humble circumstances and then moving into trade union office and parliament at a young age, he went on to hold all the major offices of state: Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary and, for three tumultuous years, from 1976 to 1979, Prime Minister. This book covers every aspect of his career and sets it against the background of challenge and decline in British history in the second half of the twentieth century. From decolonization in Africa, the devaluation of the pound, the crisis in industrial relations, challenges in Northern Ireland, to entry into the European Community and the winter of discontent, new light is shed on Callaghan's role in international and domestic affairs. So too his relationships with Gaitskell, Bevan, Wilson, Brown, Jenkins, Barbara Castle, Healey and Benn, with the trade union movement, with colonial nationalists and with foreign leaders such as Ford, Kissinger, Carter and Schmidt. Kenneth Morgan employs hitherto unused primary material to illuminate every aspect of British political and public life from the 1930s to the present time. Extensive interviews have been conducted with British and overseas leaders. The continuities and ruptures of the Labour movement and the United Kingdom from the age of Bevin to the era of Blair are thus dramatically illuminated.
Customer Reviews:
Readable but lacks drama and context.......2000-12-14
Callaghan was in some ways a pivotal political figure. He not only lead the Labour party to a critical defeat which not only saw the conservatives dominate Britain for a record period but his loss of office led to the destruction of everything he stood for. That is the union movement, Britain's place as a manufacturing nation and the notion of the labour party being a working class movement.
The writer of the book has been absorbed by Callaghan's career and has come to like him (as did most of the British Electorate). His biography thus lacks a sense of the tragedy of Callaghan's life and the failure of his Prime Minister Ship and the desolation which resulted.
Instead we get a picture of a man on the right of the labour movement who was a decent man and tried in his political career to stand for what he thought was right.
A readable biography which looks to much at the man and perhaps not enough at the political context.
A good read.......1999-01-13
James Callaghans political life covers so much ground over such a period of time, that even at 750 pages this is a breezy read. It enscapsulates an interesting and significant period of Britains history and this well written biography neatly captures the feel of these times. Callaghan's premiership has often been perhaps judged rather too harsely with the memories of the final period, rather than earlier acheivements being to the forefront of most peoples minds. this attempts to be a revisionist biography and in truth the author is a little too reverential towards and uncritical of his subject.
