Description:
In the desert areas of China investigated by the authors, various biological crusts were predominately associated with three blue-green algal (cyanobacterial) species, Microcoleus vaginatus Gom., Phormidium tenue (Menegh.) Gom. and Scytonema javanicum (Kutz.) Born et Flah. Their biomass and their compressive strength were measured simultaneously in the field in this study. It was also found that the compressive strength of algal crusts was enhanced with the increasing of algal biomass from an undetectable level to a value as high as 9.6mgg^-^1dry soil. However, when the algal biomass decreased, the compressive strength did not descend immediately, but remained relatively steady. The higher the algal biomass became, the thicker were the algal crusts formed. Given the same biomass, the highest compressive strength of man-made algal crusts in fields was found at an algal ratio of 62.5% M. vaginatus, 31.25% P. tenue and 6.25% S. javanicum, and it reached 0.89kgcm^-^2. When the biomass of the crusts increased above the value of 8.16mgchlag^-^1dry soil, the compressive strength would not ascend easily. It indicated that the compressive strength of man-made algal crusts appeared temporarily saturated in the field.

A true insight into European River Cruises.......2007-01-03
Bought this for the in-laws to investigate going on a river cruise in Europe. This concept was completely outside of their comfort zone prior to recieving this book. After a couple of days reading it, they are now ready to go and have in fact already purchased a cruise. This book is full of wonderful photographs, maps, and destinations of many of the cruises. This book was instumental in helping them decide which cruiseline to take (Viking) and which trip to take. If you are even remotely considering a river cruise in Europe, this book is a must read. And although the in-laws have not yet taken their trip, they fully intend on taking the book with them. Bon Voyage!!!!

Rough Justice.......2005-08-16
Lela Bond Phillips's recounting of this once forgotten miscarriage of justice is a gripping story well told in its sparse yet lively style covering barely 120 pages. While others would have padded the book with trial transcripts and other ephemera Phillips sticks to the facts of the case painting a warts and all portrait of Lena Baker, the accused murderer and her relationship with Ernest White, the victim. Phillips is unsparing in the depiction of the events leading to the murder as well as well as providing background information on all the major characters as events unfold. Phillips does an outstanding job of explaining how the standards of crime scene investigation and forensic evidence of the era were not as rigorous as they are now and points out the inherent contradictions in the testimony and evidence presented at trial. Phillips studiously avoids making judgments and is careful to point out that readers should not use contemporary standards to judge the characters and their actions. The unflattering and unemotional depiction of an interracial relationship gone wrong in the Jim Crow South has the potential for overwrought prose, but Phillips keeps that in check, largely due to her writing ability (she has an MA in English). In fact her style of writing is well suited for historical writing even though here she is writing out-of-field.
When printed in 1998 this book generated renewed interest in the case and efforts to mark Ms. Baker's grave and obtain a pardon from the Board of Parole and Pardons was undertaken. Those efforts bore fruit on August 15, 2005 when the Board posthumously pardoned Ms. Baker. The pardon is a small consolation as she was electrocuted 60 years ago in Georgia's electric chair; the only woman to be put to death. This book is highly recommended for those interested in exploring the Jim Crow era of the South, Georgia History, and real life crime stories. Phillips's style of writing is very enjoyable and this book is a lively page turner that will give you a better understanding of the times.
The Lena Baker Story: A Review.......2003-01-23
(The following review is taken from The Eufaula Tribune, Joel P. Smith, Triibune publisher) The Lena Baker Story, the story of the first and only woman to be executed in Georgia, is almost as fascinating as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The plot centers on Lena Baker, 44, who had never known anything but the pangs of poverty, and gristmill owner Ernest B. Knight, a white man 23 years the African-American Baker's senior. They had carried on a love-hate relationship for some three years --"The kind that usually ends in one of the parties being harmed." It began when Lena was hired to care for the mill owner while he recovered from a broken leg.The trashy affair isn't exploited, but it dramatically raises the question, was justice served even though the slave woman-locked in his gristmill and not allowed to go home -- confessed to killing him?....I found the well-researched true story to be a page-turner....The book is divided into three parts: Lena's life, the trial and the execution. If the story line doesn't have appeal, the life and times of the shooter and the gristmill owner do. It's a delightful, graphic depiction of this bygone era, encompassing politics in Georgia, including neighboring Quitman County. Georgia's own gubernatorial debacle is included, when Ellis Arnall and Herman Talmadge both claimed to be governor, sitting 20 feet from each other in the executive suite, carrying on the business of Georgia....Much history and life of the times are skillfully incoorporated into the book, such as the founding of Andrew College in 1854 to bring prospective wives to Cuthbert for the young men attending a local Baptist academy. There's the tale about the old woman who took her cats in a croaker sack with her when she went downtown to shop foor groceries. then Mrs. Luci Moye made a daily trip in the late afternoon to Eufaula to buy her pet parrot, Polly, a cherry Coke, following her "racous litany of 'Polly want a cherry Coke.'" The story doesn't have a happy ending, though. The Cuthbert Times, a local newspaper I bought years later and edited, crassly reported on her death on page one: "Baker Burns."
Lena's Story Needed to Be Told.......2002-03-28
The story of Lena Baker, the first and only woman to be executed legally in the state of Georgia, needed to be told.
Lena was an impoverished Black woman who lived in Cuthbert, the seat of Randolph County, in southwest Georgia. She lost control of her life because, in addition to her station, of two facts. A prominent white man insisted she be his mistress, and she was dependent on alcohol.
When she killed her oppressor in self-defense, she was tried for murder. Did she receive a fair trial? Was her case given an adequate investigation? Was she assigned a competent defense attorney?
The exploration of these questions makes Phillips's The Lena Baker Story an absorbing one, but even more engaging are the minute details the reader learns of small-town, Southern life in the 1940s. We are told what is playing at the movies. We know that one Cuthbert resident drove all the way to Eufala, Alabama, to buy her pet bird cherry cokes. We know what most folks had for dinner.
This book is highly recommended for its general appeal and to any student of the history of jurisprudence, of the civil rights of Blacks and women, of Americana, or of Georgia history.

Designed for "Little House on the Prarie".......2007-09-08
While on the search for a good book on easy hairstyling, I was elated to read all of the positive reviews for this book. I had short hair for years and have grown it out and was seeking some insight on quick and easy styles that would not require a lot of time (I have two young children and have little time for difficult dos).
I had hoped to find some neat updos and nice variations on the traditional ponytail. Instead, this book is all about braiding and the braids (as well as the models in the photographs) look like they are straight from an episode of Little House on the Prarie. The directions are clearly outlined and the photos nice BUT (and that is a big BUT), you must be interested in the 70's farm girl hair style in order to appreciate this book.
Though the braids are easy, I would never do them on myself as I prefer more modern styles (or even traditional styles that are not as dated as those in this book). The title of the book is very misleading -- the "and styles" is not appropriate. The entire book is about braiding alone. I purchased the book more for the "and styles" section which really does not exist.
As I said, if you are looking for a book on very dated braiding styles, this one is simple and quite clear with wonderful photographs to assist you. However, if you are looking for more modern styles and an inclusion of something other than braids, look elsewhere. I was very disappointed in this book.
So simple even a dad can use it.......2007-08-20
My hair hasn't touched my collar since 1983. Over two decades of military experience. A masters degree. Over twenty years of training with any weapon I could get my hands on, or fighting with empty hands. Just to be a six year old girl's hairdresser (among other things). Such is fatherhood.
Dignity and machismo be d*****, if I going to do it, I'm going to do it as well as I can. This book was a huge help. Before this excellent Klutz Press publication, I was limited to pony tails and simple variations on the theme. Now, I can braid, herringbone, and twist with the best of them. I'm not so good at french braids, but the girl's hair is very fine and I understand it is hard to do a good french braid in extremely fine hair.
The instructions are clearly laid out and easy to understand. The techniques are basic, but provide a "vocabulary" that can be expanded into a wide range of styles for even the most unpleasant mornings when nothing is quite right. The mysteries of the rat-tail comb have been revealled to me, and I won't attempt anything harder than a pony-tail without it again. The single strongest point has to be the clarity of the instructions. Everything is described in simple words and clear pictures that even I could grasp.
Several reviewers commented on the difficulty of doing these techniques by yourself. I will defer to their experience as I never tried to do any of these on myself.
The only downside to this book is that I have been blacklisted by a number of fellow dads after their wives said "Van can do a Victorian twist, why can't you do anything other than a pony tail?"
Braids, Braids and More Braids ... .......2007-06-08
One great book of braids; from the standard (and easy to follow instructions) for french braiding to a wonderful selection of unusual and beautiful styles. Easy to complex and all very stylish. You will love this book and love your new looks.
Fun but not very practical........2007-06-05
The book is fun to read and the styles are nice to jazz up your everyday look. My fingers are super clumsy, so most of the styles actually take me over 15 minutes to do, which is too time consuming for a morning schedule. People with short or super long hair probably won't find it as useful as those with shoulder-length or moderately long hair. If your hair is one plain color without highlights, it won't look as interesting as those pictured in the book either. I still find the book interesting and look it up for styling ideas once in a while.
Hair Braiding.......2007-05-17
This book is just what you need if you want to learn how to braid your hair in numerous ways. It is informative and instructional.
I received it within a short time.

Customer Reviews:
Wish I would have read this before I married.......2007-08-20
I picked up this book when my husband and I were having difficulties in our second year. We were missing many of the ideas in this book, particularly being mindful of each other's and our own needs. This book helped us get back on track and we saved our marriage. Two years later, we are much stronger than before and have a beautiful son too. It is a good book for us to keep handy too for the occasional refresher.
Other critiques are correct. There is not much serious Buddhist philosophy and it doesn't mention Buddha's family life, but the lessons are very helpful nonetheless.
For more than just a marriage.......2007-01-10
I keep this book in my car, but my fiance has another copy in our house. We used it when we lived apart during my first year of medical school, and it was a wonderful way to keep us connected and talking about things a little more introspective than our days.
Despite the cheesy name, this book has brought more intimacy to my relationships with my parents and friends, as well as with my fiance. I love the suggestions in this book for arguing, or giving advice. I often just open the book to a random page to see what is written, and I love the insight it brings to my own life.
The dating book is more about, well, dating, but I think it had a nice section on breaking up, which happens in all kinds of relationships.
Great for any relationship!.......2005-09-07
My fiance and I read this book together. We both enjoyed the style of writing and the "sense" it made of so many common mistakes and misunderstandings. It was not only useful for partner related relationships, but was also a great guide for all life relationships. Definitely enjoyable :-)
A great book.......2005-09-07
First, this book does in fact deal with the fact that Buddha (the man) had been married and so on, reviews stating that this book does not include factual information on this are wrong (maybe written by people who read an earlier version? or not at all?)
Second, I can say from my own personal experience, that this book has raised my interest in exploring just what Buddhism actually is (as well as a few other religions mentioned in the book.)
Finally, and most important, I have found that what is written in this book is right! It's that simple. I've had exposure to couple's counseling, 12-step programs and more, and this book distills the esential elements of being a healthy person/couple in this dysfunctional world/society.
A great read for anyone who wants to strengthen a current relationship, dissect past relationships or plan for the future!
The Buddha WAS married .... he left his wife and son to seek enlightenment.......2005-08-22
Prince Siddartha Gautama was married. He left his wife and son to seek enlightenment and an end of suffering. One day Siddartha sat under the Bodi Tree and conquered Mara (illusion) and bingo ... NIRVANA. From that moment on when he reached enlightenment ... Siddartha was called The Buddha meaning the enlightened one. In the nearly 3000 years since Buddha taught the 4 noble truths and the 8-fold path ... it is not clear that he returned to the old life, wife, and child.
So ... Kasl applies Buddhist tenants to marriage .. even though the Buddha himself renounced the attachment to a romantic relationship that often is the cause of so much suffering.
Great book but Kasl isn't married so I'm not sure if it has worked for her.

Book Description
East of the Chesapeake continues the themes and story lines of Chesapeake Boyhood, William Turner's delightful account of growing up on the lower Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake during the years following the Great Depression. Here are Turner's singular accounts of curious characters, changing seasons, natural wonders, and small-town dramas. Once again, he brings the people and landscape of rural Virginia to life as no one else can. His own drawings illustrate the stories, and they, too, win us over with their honesty and charm.
"Bill Turner writes about characters who might have inspired the likes of Damon Runyon or Erskine Caldwell. Not that Turner is another Runyon or Caldwell. He isn't. He's Bill Turner. An original." -- Bob Hutchinson, Norfolk Virginian Pilot
"Bill Turner has done it again! Another wonderful memoir of growing up and living in a place wonderfully out of sync with the rest of our one-size-fits-all world." -- George Reiger, author of Heron Hill Chronicle
Product Description
This book presents the story of a railroad that once connected Washington, D.C. with the bay side resorts at Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. In mileage and physical plant it was small-at vest an insignificant branch in the national rail system. But in association it was a great enterprise. Leading politicians rode its trains to escape the semitropical summers of the national capital. The western railroad barons, Otto Mears and David Moffat, were active in its early years. Access to original corporate papers has enriched Mr. Williams' scholarly account of the life and times of the Chesapeake Beach railway. John H White Smithsonian Institution Washington, D.C.
