Lisbon is easy and wonderful, even more so with this book.......2002-07-31

I have been spending prolonger periods of time in Lisbon, and thought I felt a 'local' there. I thought I knew all of it - its unique Old City and other sights to see, the places to hang out, things to do. I would have never thought that I would need a guidebook. In fact, Lisbon is a very easy and relatively inexpensive city to get around (unlike chaotic Rome, ... London, or confusing Asian cities). It is a wonderful place, which I thought I could fully enjoyn without the help of any guidebook. Yet, even for someone like me who knows the place and speaks the language, this Lonely Planet guidebook proved extremely useful. It is indeed one of the best LP books I have ever used - extremely well-written, entertaiting, easy-to-use, and filled with precious information. I thought I had seen all the beautiful sites, but this guidebook led me to even more places which I would have not otherwise found: to beautiful coast resorts just outside the city, Estoril just on her outskirts, etc. - with full advice on places to visit, to eat, etc. I thought that I knew what to do at night (it's not hard to find night life in Libson), but this guidebook opened my eyes even more to the wonderful life of the city after dark: the less-known discos and cafés with live music from São Tomé e Principe or Cabo Verde, the Angolan and Mozambican restaurants, etc. Also, I had been unable to find more 'formal' places for business lunches, and this book has that also ! All this is, without mentioning the excellent coverage on the city's history, art, architecture - an excellent guide indeed to her museums, churches and other sites. So, even if you do feel confident, don't go to Lisbon without it - you might be missing something you would not otherwise find.

Read Hare's Review, Excellent Complement to Tarpley Book on Bush.......2007-03-03

After reading Hare's review I do not have anything to add other than to say that this book is a wonderful compelemnt to "The Unauthorized Biography of George Bush" by Webster Tarpley, whose book on 9/11 I also recommend very highly.

As documented by this book, this attorney and author, George Bush is one of the most crooked, inept, and deceitful people ever to serve in the Presidency. By no means alone, he never-the-less takes mendacity to a new level, and this author is to be congratulated for his painstaking effort to document the facts--I only regret that we could not reach enough Americans in 2004 to prevent a second four years.

A Lawyer Dissects the Bush-Cheney Team.......2007-02-08

William Cox is a lawyer who specializes in criminal investigation. He currently serves as Senior Trial Deputy for the State Bar of California. Cox previously worked as a prosecutor, a public interest lawyer, and a law enforcement policy analyst.

Cox tackles the Bush Administration in the manner of a skilled prosecutor. His style is reminiscent of that of Vincent Bugliosi, also a former California prosecutor, in "The Betrayal of America" when he examined the egregious theft of the 2000 presidential election, taking particular aim at the United State Supreme Court majority that stopped an ongoing recount in Florida.

While Bugliosi presented an excellent brief in terms of that groundbreaking election, Cox covers it as well as what led up to Bush's selection, extending forward to a period in 2004 nearing the end of the first term of the Cheney-Bush Administration.

Cox recognizes, as does John Nichols, who wrote about the person really in charge, that Dick Cheney and the neoconservatives are the driving force in the Bush Administration. He examines the sordid route that brought the neocons to power. Cox explores the systematic character demolition of John McCain in South Carolina and the ensuing general election campaign when Al Gore was hideously misrepresented as untruthful while the smears and deception pattern actually came from the Bush campaign.

It is noted how Gore was misquoted on stating that he had invented the Internet and criticized unfairly over stating the name of the wrong person at FEMA during a debate with Bush, a common error under the circumstances, and how elements of the media falsely accused the Democratic candidate of claiming to be the subject of Erich Segal's "Love Story" when all he did was react to a story that appeared in a Nashville newspaper.

Meanwhile the Bush campaign, aided by a helpful mainstream media, took the aforementioned and made a case for Gore being less than truthful. Character was made an issue when Bush had on his resume a failed Texas oil venture in which he appears to have violated federal law and could have gone to prison if tried and convicted. He was spared further investigation by the Justice Department when his father, then President George H. W. Bush, terminated the effort.

There was also the matter of going AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard, which went uninvestigated by the mainstream media, and his reckless lifestyle that saw him drink heavily until the age of 40 and reputedly take drugs as well. When an independent investigator learned about Bush's drunk driving arrest conviction and broke the story, this was denounced in many circles as a somehow unethical act by some of the same sources that looked the other way during the slimy South Carolina Republican Primary.

The title of Cox's book of "You're Not Stupid" is a theme he uses to denote how campaign operatives with huge advertising war chests financed by lobbyists have combined with commentators and journalists beholden to those same corporate interests to create false impressions, using 30-second television advertising to distort reality. By using such tactics millions of Americans voted for George W. Bush in 2000 on the basis of character.

Cox warns Americans not to be fooled and study the issues themselves, hence the twin declarations of "you're not stupid" and "get the truth." The warning that Cox delivered can be analyzed alongside what millions of American voters did in the 2004 election.

Many voters revealed in exit polls that they voted for Bush because he made them feel safer and that they believed that Saddam Hussein actually possessed weapons of mass destruction. There was also a strong belief on the part of so many that there was a link between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda.

The author hones in on Bush early, delivering a zinging analysis in the first paragraph of the first chapter, which is entitled "Who's Bush?" Cox writes:

"How is it that a lying and denying alcoholic, with arrests for theft and disturbing the peace and a conviction for drunk driving; one born with a silver spoon in his mouth, with no empathy for the plight of ordinary people; an inarticulate spoiled brat who just didn't get the lessons of a good education; a chronically failed businessman who's never earned anything on his own; and a high school cheerleader who avoided military service in Viet Nam by joining the National Guard and then going AWOL-gets himself elected as President of the United States? Well, you can be darn sure he didn't exactly tell us the truth about his background."

We are taken through Bush's first term as the disastrous tax cuts skewed toward the rich are examined. Cox also skewers Bush on his education proposals and his bizarre behavior during 9/11, along with that of Cheney, culminating with refusal to testify under oath at an official 9/11 commission convened only after pressures built to the point where the Cheney-Bush duo could no longer prolong such action.

Cox concurs with authors who believe that the official account released by the officially sanctioned commission does not answer vital questions pertaining to 9/11. He also believes strongly that an independent commission needs to be convened.

Cox's lawyer's analytical tools are never sharper when he approaches the subject of Bush and Cheney as violators of international law, as well as their repeated violations of the Bill of Rights alongside the efforts of willing Attorney General John Ashcroft.

This former prosecutor concludes that Bush, Cheney and other members of the Administration violated international law as well as engaging in unconstitutional acts in leading the country to war in Iraq.

The pattern of deception spearheaded by the full court press to conflict launched by neoconservatives within the Administration such as Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle is examined with microscopic clarity by a veteran attorney who can spot and document illegality when he sees it.

The Evidence, The Truth, The Now, The Future.......2005-09-08

Obviously, not enough people read You're Not Stupid before the 2004 election, otherwise Cox's Brief on the Bush Presidency might have helped overcome the rigged computerized voting in Ohio and minority voter intimidation in Florida to give the Supreme Court yet another chance to anoint a president over the will of the people.

The Downing Street Documents have now proven that Bush stole another election by lying to us about the origins of the Iraq War. He, and only he, is responsible for the resulting deaths and maiming of thousands of our finest young women and men. Moreover, every day we allow him to remain in office, we, all of us are responsible for the daily blood bath in Iraq and the harm Bush's War is inflicting on the Iraqi people.

Every day, American television and newspapers conclusively establish that Bush utterly failed to avoid the deaths of thousands of Hurricane Katrina victims before it struck and stupidly failed to care for its victims in its aftermath.

What more do the American voters need than the images of the president riding his new bicycle, strumming a guitar, playing golf, and, in the midst of a horrible tragedy, bragging about the good times he had in New Orleans during the days when he was "drinking and carousing and fumbling around?"

Those who have been fooled once or twice by the smirking chimp currently on display in the White House zoo should get a copy of You're Not Stupid. As a compilation of all other books in the genre at the time it was published, it will remain a valuable reference book in the future. It's a quality edition and is probably the best buy on the market.

You're Not Stupid chillingly predicts the future if the voters fail to Get the Truth: "Some day, when our children's grandchildren look back at this moment, they will see the world we live in as it is, not the imaginary perceptions our president and his gang of zealots have attempted to pass off as the truth. History will judge us, not by what we believe, but by what we do. Awareness will be presumed, and ignorance will be no defense. If we continue to allow the commission of horrible crimes against others on hour behalf, without protest, our names shall be joined in the indictment engraved upon the monument of our civilization. Will it be with pride that our descendants read the chronicle of our lives or will they be filled with shame?"

...And Its People. That's W's latest (and greatest)"Bushism" stammered as he sighned a 400 billion plus military appropriation to further the neocon cause. Freudian slip? Could be. Just an idiot? That's a given. Not enough functioning synapses after years of alcohol and cocain abuse? All of the above? Thought the folks who acquited OJ Simpson were stupid? They ain't got nothin in terms of putting emotion ahead of reason over your average Bush supporter. Decent book. More ink must be spilled on the neocons, how they've come to power, and the damage they've caused to this country. I thinks this is the last one I'll buy that exposes this imbecile. One must conserve monetary resources in the Bush economy. One never knows when one will find themselves between jobs these days. Remember when we were a prosperous nation at peace back in 2000? Ahhh the good old days. Yeah, think that's it. No more pol books. I'm passed the point of being pissed off. Just go to the polls in November, and hope the independents see the light. Oh, yes, and cross your fingers that the electronic voting machine tallies your vote.

It would be easy to assume that the story of Elizabeth Rothenberg's battle with cystic fibrosis is one of a brave young woman staying constantly positive in the face of tremendous adversity. But situations such as hers are rarely that simple. Thankfully, the portrait that emerges in her memoir, Breathing for a Living, is that of a complex and very real human being who experiences joy, anger, despair, and hopefulness while struggling to live the kind of normal life most of her fellow college students take for granted. And while her candor is admirable, what makes Rothenberg a remarkable author is her dedication to just getting words written down on the page at times when many would simply retreat from the world. Through an agonized process of waiting for a lung transplant, she writes down exactly what she's feeling. She writes extensively as her body fights the disease and struggles to accept the new lungs. And as she is shuttled back and forth between her New York home, her academic career at Brown, and numerous emergency hospital stays, she keeps on writing. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at three days old, Rothenberg spent much of her life in and out of hospital rooms so her medical knowledge is extensive and well documented. One gets the impression that staying on top of this information helped her feel at least somewhat in control of her own situation and it lends a steady gravity to her emotionally charged memoir. The book is a pastiche of e-mails to friends, journal entries, and the occasional snapshot. It looks very much like a college kid's scrapbook, which, in many ways, it is. Rothenberg's energetic prose is highly informal and probably more guileless than one would see from a more seasoned writer. But that intimacy and simplicity adds to the charm and, as Rothenberg's health deteriorates, the heartbreak as well. By the end of Breathing for a Living, the reader loses a friend but gains a greater appreciation of what it means to live. --John Moe

Yes, But...?.......2005-03-21

I agree with others that this is a compelling and touching book. But I don't think it correctly portrays the true Laura Rothenberg. Towards the end of the book, friends and family write what Laura meant to them. In these short bits we learn about Laura's true personality, and her passion for writing. I feel like I am missing something - this book needs Laura's true essence infused in it. I would have liked this book to have included more of her poetry, more of her personal writings, and more about her personal life and self. The moments where we glimpse into her soul shine forth with passion and are the things that make the book shine, but are needed in greater amounts. While it was terribly sad to read about the medical hell she went through, I felt I couldn't connect with who Laura really was. Perhaps one day her family will release some more of her writings, and I feel that these will be even more powerful than this current volume.

this book is well enough written, and its author goes through hell. her struggles were difficult; her death was tragic. however, this book doesn't capture the deepest level of her experience. it's somehow not very personal, although it's a memoir about the author. it reads a lot more like a diary, with events noted and visitors named but not much reflection on the meanings of things or explanation of the relationships the author had. not a bad book, but somewhat flat.

I am a 26 year old woman with cystic fibrosis. In reading Laura's memoirs I found a very real and honest view of what we (cf patients) go thru everyday. Laura had an amazing strength and courage to endure all her trials and I found reading her personal story helped me understand some of my own feelings.

I think this book is a wonderful read for all persons...if you face an illness, know someone who does or just want to be touched by a lovely young womans story.

Don't Hate Me, But..........2004-06-27

I have a lot of respect for Laura Rothenberg, for having lived her whole (entirely too short) life struggling with health issues that most of us can't imagine, and for trying to give others a glimpse into the world of the chronically ill. That said, I would be lying if I claimed to find her memoir as compelling as so many others have. I think my biggest problem was that I didn't feel I got to know much about Laura as a person. Most of the book seemed to consist of detailed descriptions of the procedures performed on her, using medical jargon that I am not familiar with, so while I definitely got a sense of the hell she went through on a daily basis, and the frustration it caused her, I didn't garner any real knowledge of her disease. That would have been okay if the book was balanced out with more about her life away from the hospital - her family, friends, and school, and how she balanced these with her illness. So many friends and relatives were mentioned in passing, but we never got to know them. The emails she wrote to the people she cared about are presented anonomously, so we don't know who she's writing to. I didn't even know that she had a boyfriend until the epilogue, when she mentioned moving in with him. I just didn't feel that I got to know much about this young woman at all, and I really would have liked to.

Heartbreaking.......2004-06-06

What a sad thing to know that this wonderful person has died...through the book you feel hopeful and optimistic that she might make it, and knowing she didn't made it heartbreaking. All the things she fears before her transplant eventually come true, and I am in awe of her amazing strength. She is an inspiration to all and I think everyone should read this book in order to appreciate life.

I'm new to serging and have a tendency to research a new subject to death. This book will help you get started with the wonderful new world of serging. This book along with Singer's Sewing with a Serger gives you plenty of information that the instruction book that came with your machine leaves out. This book will help get you going and keep you coming back for more information as you progress. Highly recommended.

Most creative serger book on the market.......2003-03-26

Truly excellent, I refer to it all the time for creative ideas. Just like other books on sewing, some ideas are a little cheesy for my taste. Having said that, I still think this is the best creative serging guide out there. I love the serged toggle buttons, flatlocked zipper, chain stiched details, serged French seam and the keyhole back placket serging guide. My clothes have never looked better! As for the machine, they have suggestions on how to adapt sergers with fewer stitches. I bought my machine used & factory serviced--it was a much better buy than paying the same money for a new machine with fewer options.

Excellent decorative serger manual........2002-02-17

Subtitled "High fashion techniqus for creating great-looking clothes" the illustrations and instructions are thorough. There are two drawbacks: a substantial amount of decorative stitching described is not available on the average serger. In fact, one of the more attractive decorative stitches in the book was for a Bernina serger that wasn't yet on the market at the time of publication. There are a lot of creative suggestions anyone can use, but you may feel "left-out" because much is geared to coverlockers that also do chainstitching and a lot of the decorative work is chainstitch-based. After reading it, I felt like I needed a new serger and the one I have is less than a year old! Second, the "Garment Gallery" is too long, my opinion. The seamstresses are rightly proud of their work, but it was more than I wanted to see. That said, if you are well acquainted with your serger's basic stitching, and want to explore its creative potential, this is a great book full of tips and ideas.

Excellent.......2007-10-14

While the title makes it seem as if the book is some kind of vocal therapy book for medical patients, singers rejoice, this is a thorough manual on the art and mechanics of singing.

While I would never encourage a serious singing student to learn from just a book, if you just can't afford a singing teacher, this is the book to buy! Of course, it may not catch your eye immediately. It doesn't promise you vocal prowess in just 10 easy steps. It doesn't claim to be a revolutionary new method and it does not bask in its own ill-conceived glory like so many other books out there. It is simply a book of time tested foundational knowledge on the instrument of voice.

Each chapter is concise and is backed up by many references, examples and excercises. It is beautifully written and covers all aspects of voice from breathing and posture, to what it takes to be a proffesional singer. There was not one moment in reading the book that I felt like this might have been teaching me incompletley or incorrectly.

It is expensive, but you do not expect to spend 20 dollars for a master class with Pavarotti. Likewise, do not waist 20 bucks for the self proclaiming and inferior vocal instruction books out there. Oren L. Brown knows what he is doing and knows how to articulate it. This book is a culmination of so much knowledge on voice production that I am quite certain that it will improve any broken voice seeking to be fixed.

Great for finding Voice- Freedom.........2007-03-09

It's no secret singing is a personal universe of mystery that somehow remains unveiled no matter teachers, discipline, technique, etc. With all other instruments you can actually SEE what's going on in the process of learning. With the voice, everything is how "you feel" about it. You can not see your vocal chords to realize you have a good or bad habit...
The secret is then how to LEARN to recognize if what you feel is right about the way you sing or not. It shouldn't be so hard; you either -for example- feel exhausted after singing an aria or whatever, or feel you can keep on singing for the rest of the day without fatigue. That should indicate something! But the problem is to be able to reproduce great singing sensations in an everyday basis. That can certainly be a lifetime challenge. This book helps pointing out towards sensations associated with freedom and flow of a natural voice; Brown is all about this, in search of a more "primal" sound, connected to the way we speak. Not everything is as simple as that, and singing, depending on the repertoire, etc, etc, needs to a certain extent, some kind of artifice beyond the speaking natural sound of our voices. But this book will put you on the right track if you have been wondering about tensions with the way your vocal production occurs. Highly recommended for connecting singing with a more mundane experience in which emotions need to be part of your singing. Great simple exercises can reveal so much, and in that respect it is a fantastic book. Highly recommended.

The best explanation of how the voice works.......2007-01-20

Mr. Brown has written a powerfully informative book about all aspects of the voice. His book provides many interesting case studies, is very enjoyable to read, and includes factoids like "the Western and European singing style uses a low larynx." My one gripe is that the CD is not usable as a practice aid. Every exercise is demonstrated so briefly that you won't get a warm-up at all after singing along. If you don't have a piano, and you want to practice vocalizing at home with a piano recorded on a CD and exercises that methodically start on consecutive pitches, try the Jeffrey Allen book/CD set. That set includes techniques such as messa di voce, also demonstrated (more briefly) in Mr. Brown's CD.

Excellent for beginners.......2006-04-04

I have been wanting to teach myself to sing for several years, since I can't afford voice lessons, and have tried several books on the subject. This one is by far the best. I first tried books by William Vennard and Richard Miller and found that they were meant for advanced students, not beginners. There are other books for beginners, but they aren't usually meant for classical singing, more for pop (and I find that the authors don't really seem to have much of an understanding of the human voice). I don't know how he does it, but Brown manages to make normally difficult concepts easy to understand. Part of that is because of the CD that comes with it. It helps give a better understanding of what he's trying to explain. I would highly recommend this book for anyone trying to learn how to sing classically.

The plain truth about singing........2006-03-08

This book is glorious.

Never could I have imagined that the (singing) voice was so clear to understand. Brown almost performs the miracle of "a book teaching somebody to sing". This is, as we all know, not true. However, just by simply reading this book, you will start to have wonderful insights about your own voice, which this book is all about.
