Book Description
Paddler's Guide to the Sunshine State is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source of information on paddling in Floridabound so that it lies open at each page for easy reference or photocopying--and is fully indexed. Whether you're a first-time paddler or a whitewater veteran, whether you're looking for an easy going two-hour tour with your family or a week-long solo adventure, this book lists the most delightful destinations to explore in a state famous for its scenic waterways.
From the vast flats of the Florida Keys to the rivers and springs of the Florida Panhandle, Paddler's Guide to the Sunshine State gives directions to 91 Florida waterways, separated into 271 individual canoeing and kayaking excursions. For each of the 91 destinations, veteran paddler and outdoor writer Sandy Huff
· tells her readers where to rent or buy canoes and kayaks,
· evaluates the difficulty of each trail,
· supplies emergency phone numbers and a customized map showing launch and take-out sites, average length, and paddling time for each leg,
· and presents a candid discussion of the waterway.
In introductory chapters, she offers safety tips on camping basics, dressing for comfort, coping with insects, sunburn, and power boats, and reading the weather and water currents. She describes Florida flora and fauna that paddlers might encounter--birds, alligators, manatees, snakes, plants, and treesand lists paddling clubs around the state as well as Internet web addresses for additional paddling information.

Useful information.......2002-12-28
There is a lot of good information in this book, but most of it can be found toward the beginning. The tips on predicting the weather alone could be worth the price of the book. However, the maps of the various waterways were absolutely terrible. I would recommend this book for a general overview and lots of tips and tricks for paddlers, and the two "Canoeing and Kayaking the Streams of Florida" guides for detailed information on specific waterways.
Packed with detailed information and also entertaining!.......2002-11-21
After much looking around, this is the first book I actually bought. Its got very detailed, practical information on most of the waterways, but doesn't even mention some beautiful rivers that I've paddled in the central area of the state. While the text was excellent, I found the maps to be confusing and lacking in detail about ramps and access roads, compared to my personal knowledge of the roads and waterways of some areas. Its one of the most recently written books on this subject, so the information is probably the most current. It is not just a dry info book, but includes humorous stories about paddling and camping, altho the author writes as if she would enjoy the outdoors much more without all that pesky wildlife! Still, I highly recommend this book for planning your next outing.
good book.......2002-01-31
Well, I've typed this twice, I think. Anyway, the writer has a good sense of humor, and I'd like to paddle with her sometime. Each chapter has a story to go with it, from Indian history to digging fossils to fishing to how NOT to cook on a week long canoe camping trip.
I'll use this book often.
Paddling with a sense of humor.......2002-01-31
The lady who wrote this book must be a lot of fun to paddle with. Her dry humor shows up in every chapter. I'd like to meet her in person.
Besides a great deal of advice about problems specific to Florida, she gives a number of safety tips. I almost felt like I was being mothered.
Obviously an experienced writer, Sandy Huff has a story to tell about each destination, ranging from history to botany to birding to how NOT to cook while camping. I also intend to put a stick of hot glue and a book of matches in my emergency kit from now on.
Very enjoyable reading, and probably the most comprehensive where-to book ever pubished for canoers and kayakers about Florida waters. I'll go back to this book often
Paddling enjoyment.......2002-01-23
I found the book "Paddler's Guide" easy to find ones way around in through a well organized index. The locations that I looked up i.e. Chassahowitzka and Weeki Wachie rivers had all the info that one could possible need to set off on a paddle.
Very important though is to read first the initial chapters on Tips for Paddling. Their is a wealth of information in this book. Congratulations.

Book Description
The Ferris Conspiracy is one man's insight into Britain's crime world and the inextricable web of corruption. Arthur Thompson, Godfather of the crime world and senior partner of the Krays, recruited young Paul Ferris as a bagman, debt collector, and equalizer. By the age of 21 Ferris had become Glasgow's most feared gangster, deemed a risk to national security. Feared for his capacity for extreme violence matched by his intelligence, Ferris was the Godfather's heir apparent. However when gang warfare broke, underworld leaders colluded with their partners—the police. Disgusted, Ferris left the Godfather and stood alone. Thereafter he was hounded and framed by the security services, and two of the UK's most powerful gangsters tried to have him killed and then framed him. Ferris is now in prison and wants to reveal the unholy alliance between the police and the criminal fraternity.

Glasgow.......2005-02-18
I almost didn't buy this book because it looks kind of childish, what with the big bold writing switches but I'm realy glad I did. I don't know if all the alligations are true and I'm left with a bunch of questions at the end of the book. Was this intentional Paul? maybe so we'll buy your next book. Well it works for me.
I only bought it in an airport because I was bored and I truly loved it and I think anyone from Glasgow will feel the same. Maybe even anyone from anywhere.
So how about a book called 'The Apprentice' Mr Ferris? Do you do signings?
Why are some police more corrupt than others?.......2004-06-26
Since the early part in this book outlines the police position as being corrupt, bent, call it what you want I believe that not all of them are. However why have STRATHCLYDE POLICE not acted to counter these serious allegations by taking a civil-litigation out on anyone since the book was published? could it be the case that they are not just allegations but are matters of FACT? come on STRATHCLYDE POLICE is your silence so obvious we know you must have something to hide? The public have a right to know, and you have a reputation to defend or have you?
Book Description
Finishing wood surfaces can be tricky and time-consuming, and all that effort and time may not yield the beautiful product envisioned at the start. Great Wood Finishes is written by an expert in the field to help the occasional finisher/refinisher or hobbyist woodworker avoid that problem. The book uses simple instructions and a wealth of illustrations to make the process easy and rewarding.
Great Wood Finishes begins with a thorough discussion of tools and materials. It moves on to instructions and photo essays covering every technique, including staining, glazing, and rubbing out. The final section, primarily photos and captions, covers specialty finishes that can easily be created by combining the techniques presented earlier in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Needs the "finishing touches"..........2007-06-29
To begin, this book has really helped me achieve greater finishing results. One of my favorites is a technique for antiquing maple, which helped make a blanket chest turn out extra beautiful. The book has lots of photos and well-written instructions.
In the past, I would rely on the paint rep in the local hardware store (or home center) for my finishing questions. While helpful, my experience is that they usually only know the basics. Anything else, and you're on your own. So for me, Mr. Jewitt became the next "guide". His advice has helped me reach a whole new level with finishing.
If you haven't experimented around with using many finishes or tried many finishing techniques, this book just might be for you. He focuses primarily on beginning and intermediate levels. (Advanced woodworkers may find other books more helpful.)
Now for the reason I'm not rating it a 5.
The main beef I have with this book is that the page references in the index are almost all wrong. For instance, I was recently trying to find information on "Sealing Glazes", something I wanted to know for a coffee table project. The index referenced two pages, 229 and 333, both of which are pages in the index! I'm still not sure I ever found that section. This is just one example of the many page referencing problems.
And here's where/why it gets annoying.
My favorite section is the last, Section 10 Specialty Finishes. I go here all the time for ideas. It has great examples and techniques such as antiquing maple and cherry, two distressing methods, ebonizing, whitewashing, etc. These mini sections are written in "overviews" style, and so you need to have either read the entire book beforehand (and remembered it all) or, like me, thumb back to find out where he talks about glazes, or sealers, or dyes, or... In other words, I really need to rely on the index because I use this book as a reference. Unfortunately, as explained, the index lacks the finishing touches.
I also wish the author had more examples in section 10, but the ones he includes are great.
It's evident that Jeff Jewitt knows his stuff. Overall, a very helpful book to own.
Jeff is a great woodworker and author. A must have.......2007-01-04
A must have for anyone that finishes wood. I refer to this every time I get ready to finish a project.
Great.......2006-11-05
the book is very good.Very detailed very easy to folow the steps.
What more can you ask.I am very happy.
Good but not great.......2004-07-21
This book contains a lot of useful information and it will no doubt improve my finishing skills, but for a 234 page book focused exclusively on finishes, I guess my expectations were higher. I have a couple of broadly focused woodworking books that have almost as much information on quality finishing. In my opinion, the book could be improved by reducing the number of redundant photos and increasing the amount of textual information. The book is filled with very high quality photos but how many photos do you need of someone brushing, wiping or spraying a stain or finish on a piece of wood? I was hoping for more textual information matching fillers, sealers and finishes to various types of wood, e.g., hardwoods vs. softwoods vs burlwoods. A few of the most popular woods are partially covered in this way, but not many.
Still, I would recommend this book, particularly for someone looking for a broad overview of the various options and techniques required to achieve a high quality finish.
Just what you want to know.......2004-04-21
I owned a high end body shop for twenty years. Did a lot of European cars, and the finished products, all to often, wound up under strong showroom lights. Factory approved finishing and repair for BMW, Benz etc. With specific application techniques, and finally exhaustive rubbing, a finish was produced that would far exceed factory specs. It was necessary to tone it down unless you were doing an overall. Why am I saying all of this? Well mainly this: If someone asked me about refinishing I could get very specific about techniques. What to do, what not to do, and the tips and tricks to take it over the top. It is all to often the technique that would separate the mind blowing finish from the mundane. Of course the proper material had a lot to do with it, but if I had to choose just one, it would be technique. Now that woodworking is a part of my life, trying to apply 20 years of automotive knowledge to woodworking, is almost a waste of time. In automotive, you build up a thick layer of finish, that is often catalyzed for quick drying, then the next day cut it with wet and dry paper, and polish it with lambs wool bonnets. Unfortunately that doesn't have a thing to do with wood finishing. I have been on a quest for the past couple of years to find a book on wood finishing that would give me the kind of knowledge that I understood with automotive. After all of my searching, I finally found it, and Great Wood Finishes: A Step-By-Step Guide to Consistent and Beautiful Results by Jeff Jewitt is it. You couldn't gain the experience given in this book without spending a lot of years acquiring it. The only obstacle to acquiring a lifetime of finishing knowledge is our willingness to open our minds and accept it.
They say their is two ways to learn: Either go through the school of hard knocks, or listen to someone who has gone through the school of hard knocks. Not only does this book show you how, their is a knack applied, by the author of explaining the relevant aspects of what you want to know. Their is no way I want to spend the kind of time and resources that would be necessary, in order to learn the lessons explained in this book. I guess you could say that Jeff Jewitt is more than an deeply experienced wood refinisher, he is an excellent teacher as well.
He explains the different finishing techniques, each of the different materials, and even the unique problems you acquire in finishing different species of wood.
The book gives you full color photographs, for example, of a piece of cherry, which is divided into different sections, displaying the different shades as a result of different coloring techniques.
I am glad that I bought the other books on refinishing wood, but this book is the one that I feel the most akin to. The author tells you the pitfalls to avoid, and is still very much in touch with the reasons why he does what he does. He doesn't just say this is the way you do it period. He explains quite often the reason why. Overall I highly recommend this book. Nothing really negative to say about it. It's a great one.

Book Description
For more than fifty years, Ward travelled remote areas of the Far East looking for beautiful flowers and shrubs likely to thrive in western gardens and for new botanical specimens. His discoveries included new kinds of rhododendrons, lilies, gentians, primulas and the legendary Tibetan blue poppy. This is a narrative of his adventures and discoveries in Tibet in 1933, illustrated with his own photographs. Ward conveys the excitement of exploration, the thrill of danger and the rewards of discovery as, in one precarious situation after another, he discovers new plants and seeds.

A Must Read for Family Therapists.......2001-12-29
This book explains Bowen's Extended Family Therapy Theory. This is one of the most important family systems theories in the history of family therapy and it is still one of the most widely used theories for working with families. Anyone that is studying family therapy should read this book as it is the seminal work on Bowen Therapy. Essential ideas such as triangling, emotional fusion, and intergenerational transmission are well explained.
One of the best things about this book is that it is highly readable. This book can be beneficial to anyone interested in learning more about families. It can be helpful to the lay person as well as to the professional family therapist.
Introduction to natural sytems.......1999-08-20
A rich introduction to Murray Bowen's natural systems theory. Explains relevance of the theory to clinical work with families, couples, and individuals. Also, briefly explores and contrasts the relationship of Bowen theory to sociobiology, evolutionary neurology, and analytic theory. Case illustrations are clear and helpful. Would recommend to social workers, psychologist, biologists, and those interested in a natural systems approach to human behavior. Although strong on evaluation and descriptions concerning emotional processes in human families and groups, there is less attention to therapy techiques. More of a book about thinking on relationships, than one of the clinical "how to" kind of presentations that have become standard fare in the family therapy field. I have read through Dr. Kerr's text several times and have studied its chapters separately. Each reread reveals additional applications and insights into the theory. Surely, a book that can grow with you! Dr. Bowen's epilogue is an added jem in which he offers perhaps his last written description of the development of the theory and his belief in the relevance of theory to the future. Personally, the book has influenced both my private and professional life.
Book Description
Well known for his sketches, paintings, and sculptures of the Old West, Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) was also an accomplished author in the humorous genre known as "local color." Raphael Cristy sorts Russell's writings into four general categories: serious Indian stories, men encountering wildlife, cattle range characters, and nineteenth-century westerners facing twentieth-century challenges.
Russell's art is often misinterpreted as mere longing for a fading open-range west, but his writings tell a different story. Cristy shows how Russell amused his peers with stories that also delivered sharp observations of Euro-American suppression of Indians and humorous treatment of wilderness and range issues plus the emergence of women and urbanization as bewildering agents of change in the modern West.
"A welcome departure from the usual biographies and coffee table volumes on Russell and his art. . . . [Cristy] deals with an important, yet relatively unexplored, aspect of the career of one of the most influential interpreters of the American West."Byron Price, Director, C. M. Russell Center for the Study of Art
