Potential visitors and those interested in the finer details of the Normandy campaign will never find a more exhaustive guide than this one to all five D-Day landing beaches, the airborne drop zones, and surviving fortifications, as well as all cemeteries, memorials, museums, local accomodations, and other points of interest.
Interest in the D-Day landings has never been greater on both sides of the Atlantic. No one knows the Normandy Campaign and countryside as it stands today better than Major and Mrs Holt, the pioneers of battlefield touring.?

Essential Guide for Self-Tour of Normandy!.......2007-08-11
This book was an invaluable guide for a self-drive two-day tour of Normandy sites that my wife and I undertook in May 2007. We only scratched the surface of the many different sites that are described in the book, but the reviews/overviews for each location were incredibly helpful in choosing our path, and the map was also quite useful (much better than other reviewers had indicated). Highly recommended!
extremely helpful.......2007-05-21
I purchased this book 2 weeks before a trip to normandy with my brother who lives in bristol, england. Our trip was to be short to the area, 3 days including driving to/from calais. The book was extremely helpful and detailed in its description of the area and the driving directions to the various sites. The itinerary layouts, the author provides suggested "tours" or itineraries of the various beaches, were well done and assisted us greatly in deciding what to see and visit. Upon leaving the Normandy area, we slowly made our way to Arras through the countryside and the old Somme battlefied. After having the book for the Normany area, i was disappointed to not have something as detailed to use for the area of the Somme (i had not purchased the Holt's Somme book). I'm a history buff and pretty well versed in these battles, but the book definitely makes a difference in understanding the local area when visiting. I'd recommend the book as a must have if making the trip.
A must have for Normandy battlefield touring.......2007-01-10
I am going to Normandy this spring and I bought this guide to show me where to see the battlefields, monuments, museums, etc. I expect I will get good use from it. Not only its a guidebook, its also a lesson in history just to read all the personal accounts and little know stories. Thanks to the authors for writing it!
Major & Mrs. Holt's Normandy.......2006-03-22
We recently came back from a trip to Normandy & this book was most helpful. My husband brought it with us & used it as a guide. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the allies landing on these beaches during WW11, what they endured & what actually happened & also anyone planning a trip to this area.
Indispensible Guide with massive detail.......2006-03-16
As other reviewers have noted, this book is from a British perspective, but covers the American and Canadian beaches in exhaustive detail. The suggested routes are excellent and everything a visitor could possible want to see is covered. Brief descriptions of the planning and course of the invasion and battles provide an overview. My only quibble is the map, while showing every site in detail is more for planning and not actual navigation. When travelling, I used the Michelin map and the guidebook with great success. Major and Mrs. Holt produce an excellent series of guidebooks aimed at the person with detailed interest - their books are not for the casual traveller due to the level of detail.

I Love You, Ronnie: The Letters of Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan
ASIN: 0312331177 |
Book Description
Since 1987, when she published Early Reagan: The Rise to Power, Anne Edwards has had extraordinary interest and insight into politics' most intriguing couple. She now draws upon new research-private interviews with President Gerald Ford and members of the Reagans' circle, as well as unprecedented access to the Reagans' personal correspondence-to get to the heart of their marriage. Proving once again that she is 'the queen of biography' (Kirkus Reviews), Edwards reveals electrifying scenes of life in the White House-from Nancy's jealousy of Margaret Thatcher to her disdain for Prince Philip-and uncovers the real story be-hind Ronnie's first realization that he had Alzheimer's disease.
Customer Reviews:
Wrong Title.......2007-10-22
The title of this book should be, "Nancy Gets Her Man and the White House Too." It's a chick-book chocked full of minutia such as, "She loved the peach-and-white, totally feminine boudoir...", and, "Nancy dressed in a comfortable Adolfo wool ensemble...".
The author, Ms. Edwards, scolds Nancy for being a bad mother, and tells us that Ronald was not a bright man. Yet Ronald Reagan rose from poverty to President, writing and delivering stunning public speeches, ended the cold war and protected us from communists and terrorist who knew he meant business when he told them to back off. And as Cyrano might say, he was a poet.
The book is filled with ambiguous antecedents which make speed reading difficult. However, if you like this sort of drivel, I have seen copies of the book on sale here for a penny!
Nice try, but is this a true portrait?.......2005-10-23
This book takes a look at the lives of Nancy and Ronald Reagan both while in and out of political life with emphasis on the Reagans, themselves, rather than on the political events of which they were a part. The book clearly reflects the time and effort expended by the author in researching and writing it and appears to contain a great deal of authoritative information concerning the Reagans. Much of it is in the form of quotes from those who worked with or for the Reagans or otherwise interacted with them. These are woven into a fairly comprehensive and persuasive story.
Even so, the book seems to fall short of its title. It is not so much a "portrait" of the Reagans' "marriage" as it is a "connect the dots picture" of the Reagans life together as seen by those outside the marriage. Unfortunately, there are many missing dots and those are the ones which would reveal the more human side of the Reagans and the personal relationships and interactions between them. Clearly, there are enough dots (observations of Nancy or Ron, made by those who knew or worked with either one or both of them) but most bear little or no relationship to their marriage. Only in the final chapter does one finally get to see the true depth of their feelings for one another. In my view, rather than being a "team" comprised of:1) a husband who because of his Christian upbringing and his mother's teachings is desperately trying to hold onto his second wife, and 2) a cold calculating wife willing to do anything to advance herself through her husband's achievements; theirs was one of America's great love stories.
However, with all the information presented to the reader, each reader can easily form his or her own mental image of what the Reagan's married life may have been like. The problem is that from all accounts Nancy was an entirely different person in the eyes of Ronald Reagan than she was to virtually everyone else. And the opposite, in many cases, is also true. So if this is all there is, we may never be able to get a true portrait of the Reagan marriage. Nice try though.
A good read...but not much new here.......2004-01-07
First, let me start off by saying that Anne Edwards "Early Reagan" is one of my favorite books about Reagan. Her latest, The Reagans: Portrait of a Marriage" is a good read but there really isn't much new information Reagan fans and scholars don't already know about these remarkable people. My biggest criticism of this book is that I believe Edwards overdoes the old stereotype that Nancy wore the pants and was the brains behind the man and his rise to power and what a dragon lady she was. Parts of the book are very unfair, in my opinion, to Nancy and come pretty close to doing a hack job. In that regard, it's disappointing. Still, Edwards knows her subjects very well and the book is very easy to read and uncluttered. The last chapter does bring the story of Reagan's life up to date with his struggle with Alzheimers. Overall, a good read about two fascinating people and their loving relationship.
Book Description
As the Reagans' favorite photographer, Harry Benson has long enjoyed a special relationship with the former first family, photographing them numerous times for Life and Vanity Fair magazines. His photographs of the couple, taken at the White House and at the Reagans' homes and ranches, are intimate and appealing records of a happy and fulfilling marriage.
Recently, Nancy Reagan invited Benson to photograph the couple together one last time, a bittersweet occasion given the former president's Alzheimer's Disease. That portrait and others spanning nearly 40 years are gathered together in this charming book, which also contains an introduction by Patti Davis about her parents, as well as Benson's own memories of his encounters with the Reagans.

In one of literary history's ghastlier ironies, Iris Murdoch, the author of such highly intellectual and philosophical novels as A Severed Head and Under the Net, was diagnosed in 1994 with Alzheimer's disease, which slowly destroys reasoning powers, memory, even the ability to speak coherently. Her husband, English literary critic John Bayley, unsparingly depicts his wife's affliction in prose as elegant and accessible as hers always was. Readers may wince at the spectacle of Murdoch glued to the TV watching the Teletubbies program, unable to perform tasks as simple as dressing herself and prey to devastating anxiety as the world becomes less and less comprehensible to her. We understand Bayley's occasional fits of rage when his caretaking chores overwhelm him. Yet in the end his memoir is touching, even inspiring. As he recalls their first meetings and marriage in the 1950s, it becomes clear that theirs was always an unconventional union, in which solitude was as important to each of them as togetherness and Bayley was content to let Murdoch keep her inner life to herself. He loves Iris, the woman, not the intellect, and he conveys an essential sweetness about his wife that endures even as her mental faculties deteriorate. This totally unsentimental account of their life and her illness is nonetheless a heartbreaker. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
With remarkable tenderness, John Bayley recreates his passionate love affair with Iris Murdoch--world-renowned writer and philosopher, and his wife of forty-two years--and poignantly describes the dimming of her brilliance due to Alzheimer's disease. Elegy for Iris is a story about the ephemeral beauty of youth and the sobering reality of what it means to grow old, but its ultimate power is that Bayley discovers great hope and joy in his celebration of Iris's life and their love. In its grasp of life's frailty and its portrayal of one of the great literary romances of this century, Elegy for Iris is a mesmerizing work of art that will be read for generations.

An Elegy of a Wonderful Marriage.......2006-08-18
John Bayley CBE and Dame Iris Murdoch were married for almost 50 years. Their relationship was truly unique, special, and hard to replicate. They trusted each other, nurtured each other in literary criticism and writing, Their union was brought together during their time at Oxford where they lived for the remainder of their years together. JOhn writes lovingly about Iris even during her illness of Alzheimers which deteriorates the brain matter. Iris relied on her mind to write, analyze, and plan elaborate novels which were multi-storied and engaged the readers to think themselves. She was also a philosopher, college professor, etc. It's hard to imagine that Iris was no grand beauty but she had both inner and outer beauties. Sadly, her disease would rob them of so much more. Iris became more childlike and unable to care for herself while John became the primary caretaker. John who was in the shadow was now in the forefront without much help. It's hard watching the film without shedding a tear or reading this book without feeling something for somebody we never personally knew but by reading this book, we do learn about this amazing couple. We learn about their triumphs and failures. How they were just happy to be together and go swimming, if only happiness was that easy to find nowadays. John was a wonderful husband. I admire his truth, candidness, and revelations that their marriage was not always about sex and that Iris didn't care for it in general. They didn't have any children and neither seemed to mind that outcome of their marriage.
A small masterpiece.......2004-06-17
This book is the story of a marriage, a life together of two enormously intelligent writers, John Bayley and Iris Murdoch. Bayley tells the story of their forty - two years of marriage at the same time he describes more closely the four last years in which Iris Murdoch suffered from Alzheimer's. He writes with humor and quiet understanding, and his obvious admiration and love for his wife speak throughout the work.
The cruelty of Alzheimer's is somehow underlined when the one who suffers is a person of extraordinary mind , a devotee of the life of the mind . Bayley honestly and painfully portays the strange kind of blankness and absence which the Alzheimer sufferer often displays. He does this against a background of the story of two lives, each of one has been lived in part in the great solitude of outstanding creator endeavor. But he also very good relating their shared experiences.
Bayley is also tactful and restrained about a certain assymetry in their relation, relating probably much more to the early years when Iris was involved with others. One nonetheless feels Bayley's restrained anger in his description of the ' master figure ' who for a time seemed to be a center of Murdoch's intellectual life.
What however impresses and makes this work remarkable is the steady gaze of love and intelligence with which Bayley sees , envelopes and protects Murdoch . This book is a work of love and pain, and of great beauty. It also provides much valuable insight into that terrible condition when the person is physically present but mentally lost.
Wonderfully rambling.......2004-01-10
I've spent the last 3-4 years writing a memoir (Baby Catcher). Therefore, I'm immersing myself in creative NF and memoir, and this is one of the best. Only a consummate writer such as John Bailey could have pulled this off. I've heard others complain about his rambling style, meandering between distant past, near past, and present (and I haven't seen the movie yet), but I found the transitions seamless and the flow of time as effortless as thought itself. Bailey shows all phases of the caretaking of someone with late-stage Alzheimers, regret, humor, irritation, rage, impatience, love, silliness... Would that each of us be accompanied on our trip to life's end - however it may present itself - by someone similarly compassionate. And articulate. May John Bailey himself be equally eulogized.
A Fairy-Tale Memorial: Elegy for Iris.......2003-10-16
A mysterious lady. A dashing young suitor. A love that overcomes all obstacles. Sound like Disney's latest flick? Not so. It's John Bayley's narrative Elegy for Iris, a stunning memoir for his wife Iris Murdoch. In this real life fairy-tale story with a not so fairy-tale ending, Bayley recalls his life with Iris before Alzheimer's robbed her personality of it's usual depth, as well as the change the disease wrought in her, and in his life with her.
Elegy for Iris is the wonderfully detailed, lovingly written story of Iris Murdoch's and John Bayley's life together, told from Bayley's point of view. It tells of their meeting, the growth of their relationship, their unusual marriage, and the change in their lives after Iris became afflicted with Alzheimer's. From Bayley's "lady on a bicycle" to swimming in seemingly every main river in France and England; from Iris' diary entry "St. Antony's Dance. Fell down the steps, and seem to have fallen in love with J. We didn't dance much." to their unusual marriage of solitude; Bayley has written his story to enchant and amaze.
Bayley's attention to detail, even seemingly those that are minor or irrelevant, can be seen throughout the book. His descriptions, for instance, of his various outings with Iris make the memoir much more realistic. "Our first swim was in a river of the Pas-de-Calais, a deep, placid tributary of the Somme...The next was much farther south, in a steep and wild-wooded valley, with pine and chestnut growing up the mountains. The water was warm, and the stream so secluded that we slipped in with nothing on", is only a part of Bayley's extensive descriptions of their honeymoon. Water plays a large part in their lives; whenever Bayley and Iris go somewhere new, they find someplace to swim there. Water seems to be a symbol of change, of their changing lives throughout their years together.
Bayley's attention to detail can also be a detriment to the reader, however, as it makes the story-line difficult to follow at times. When he begins to tell one particular tale, he often will break into many tangents, that can entangle the reader and detract from the focus on the main narrative. "Our host, who had been getting lunch, was quite a time getting to the door. He was a brilliant green eyed doctor named Maurice Charlton...Maurice Charlton probably worked harder than either of us, or than both of us put together, I should say....Maurice Charlton died young, of cancer, I believe, more than twenty years ago." This can be somewhat confusing, and occurs throughout the book.
The description that Bayley gives their marriage is a striking one, and is a continuous theme throughout Elegy for Iris. He describes "one of the truest pleasures of marriage [as] solitude", using the words of Australian poet AD Hope that marriage is designed to `move [the partners] closer and closer apart.' This unusual description runs contrast to most peoples' beliefs on marriage, yet serves as a perfect description for Bayley's own marriage. "Such ignorance, such solitude! They suddenly seemed the best part of love and marriage. We were together because we were comforted and reassured by the solitariness we saw and were aware of in the other." This attitude seems predominant throughout the narrative, even after Iris is afflicted with Alzheimer's. The only difference, in Bayley's eyes, is that "the closeness of apartness has necessarily become the closeness of closeness." Bayley's view on marriage is a refreshing change from the normal stereotypes.
This book is thoroughly enjoyable and heartwarming, yet at the same time poignantly sad. To watch as Bayley slowly loses the woman who was his wife to a woman who recalls almost nothing of their life together, yet continues to cling to Bayley as if he were her last hope, is slightly depressing. Yet, as his memories show, Bayley and Iris lived a rich, full life together- it is heartwarming to watch them fall in love, marry, and grow together in their relationship. Bayley runs the full gamut of emotions in this personal narrative-and what's more, he makes the reader do the same.
A Memorable reading experience!.......2003-07-29
I read Iris Murdoch's The Sea, The Sea, (which won the 1978 Booker Prize) on Dec 4, 1983, and her Under the Net (which was no. 95 on the Modern Library panel's list of the 100 greatest novels written in English in the 20th century) and was under-enthralled with both. So I wa not expecting much when I undertook to read her husband's memoir of his life with her (written during the last days of her life, she having died Feb. 8, 1999), especially since I could not believe it would be great to read about someone having Alzheimer's and of caring for such a person. I was very pleasantly surprised. Bayley's memoir is great reading, full of interesting information as well as a thoughtful and truthful-sounding account of their life as husband and wife. Illustrative of the former, on page 118 we learn that Aldous Huxley believed that Piero della Francesca's Resurrection was "the greatest painting in the world" (and it is great to go to the computer and see the painting!) and on page 164 et seq. we have a very uncomplimentary account of the 1981 Nobel-prize-winner Elias Canetti (his name is never mentioned, but there can be no doubt of his identity since the computer will tell those of us who did not know that Canetti is the author of Die Blendung). We have mention of Montague Rhodes James (and can go to the computer to read his some of his ghost stories, including "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas", the story referred to by name in this memoir). Since Bayley is an eminent literary critic (as the jacket describes him) the book abounds with interesting tidbits such as this, and almost persuades me I should read another Murdoch book! I found this book a great reading experience.

Book Description
In the deep, dark canyons of the sea live the largest animals on Earth: the heart of the blue whale is the size of a sports car, the eye of a right whale is the size of a grapefruit, and the 'wing span' of a humpback's flippers can reach 12 metres. In
Meeting the Whales, author Erich Hoyt pieces together the life histories of the enigmatic giants that swim the waters of the northern hemisphere. Hoyt has spent years working with these mammals, and his fascination and empathy for them is evident in
Meeting the Whales.
Bringing us face-to-face both with these intriguing creatures and the scientists who study them, Hoyt leads us through the underwater world of whales, investigating their unique communication skills and feeding and mating behaviors, their remarkable migrations and their astounding acrobatics. Beautifully illustrated by whale specialist Pieter Folkens, and the work of the world's best wildlife photographers,
Meeting the Whales is a unique contribution to the study of this increasingly rare animal.

Quilted Memories.......2006-07-14
Every time some one sees my book I am compelled to purchase them one as a gift. I am on my forth book. Everyone I know loves this book!
It's a winner........2006-06-09
If I never picked up a needle, I'd still want to have this book. It is beautifully written and photographed. Instructions are very clear and make it all seem so simple. This book certainly takes the fear out of the idea of quilting. Lesley has done a fabulous job blending the arts of quilting and collage. Pages and pages of wonderful photographs to inspire you to pick up that needle and head for the scrap bag.
Finders Will Be Keepers of this Delightful Book........2006-05-14
A wonderful book for multi-tasking, multi-talented people who love to put creative personality into their craft projects. Riley's instructions and ideas make for page after page of motivation to create your ownn original family heirlooms."Scraps: Adventures in Scrapbooking" got me into the joys of cropping and journal-keeping, and this book motivated me to take the next joyful leap.
Fabric collage, and yet something more.......2006-03-31
Traditionally, quilt making truly IS a form of fabric collage.
How cool, to see the directions in which narrative quilting is moving!
It's expertly shown to those of us lucky enough to run across this swell volume by Ms. Riley. And we realize from the eye candy, ideas, inspiration & techniques illustrated in this charming (& nicely made!) book, that it's not the size of a project that guarantees its impact. I especially love the "Gallery of Quilted Memories" beginning on page 110. Each example is a small treasure of the four elements I listed above & something to which I will continually return.
Love This Book!.......2006-03-02
As a genealogist and quilter who recently discovered Journal Quilts this book has been a godsend. The illustrations are lovely as well as helpful and the step by step instructions for how to do the various techniques, such as photo transfers, have been a great help in constructing my projects. I've been recommending "Quilted Memories" to all the quilters in the About.com Quilt Forum's "Journal Quilts Challenge: 2006".

Book Description
Imaginative play is more vital for a child's future than many parents and educators realize. The more they are allowed to be absorbed in their play, the more fully and effectively they will later take their place in the community of adults.
Drawing on her experiences as a mother and as a proponent of Rudolf Steiner's Waldorf system of education, author Heidi Britz-Crecelius emphasizes the different qualities of play that may extend through more than one phase of childhood. She focuses on natural materials and recommends specific games, toys, and art supplies that further the mobility of the mind and the powers of expression without the burden that premature schooling can place on children.
In
Children at Play, the author also reminds us that the human being, though bound by laws of space and time and tied to the earth, stems from eternity and belongs to a much larger community; the child's innermost being is directly related to the all-embracing world of spirit.

Disappointing.......2007-04-30
This book would have been better as an article.
At times, she was all over the place.
Some interesting points, but a lot of fluff.
mother of three little girls.......2005-08-16
i checked out and read the older edition of this book titled 'children at play, preparation for life', and i found it quite touching. the author speaks alot of her experience growing up in post war germany. the information she gives was like talking to the grandmother i never had. i admit to wet eyes a few times.... i could imagine what a child's play life was like before our t.v. babysitting days and logoed toys eliminated much of our creativity. she discusses how children get what they need from simple things that are part of our natural surroundings and our lives. she explains how through play, children can deal with the different aspects of becoming a human being.
alot of what she explained is typical steiner/waldorf philosophy, which is beautiful if you want to take the time to understand it properly, (and btw the philosophy certainly won't hurt you if you don't want to take that time).
it is a simple, flowing, and instinctual philosophy that is truly empowering and peaceful. i thought this book was really precious and i will buy it to add to my library, future gifts for my own daughters.
Not What I Hoped For........2004-11-20
Since I am new to Waldorf ideas, I was hoping for a few more clearly-stated Waldorf principles and ways to apply them. This book wanders quite a lot. Although I agree with the main point of the book, that children need to play, some of the research the author presents and then the jumps to conclusion that follow are a bit far-fetched. I guess I'll move on to some other books.
Dont forget your childhood!.......2004-10-27
This book wasn't what I expected. I guess I was looking for a more practical guide-type book, but instead it read like an inspiring essay, reminding me of the places ansd people I created in my childhood. Ok, maybe that sounds weird, but I remember so foundly the days spent running in the woods, creating forts and making dolls out of anything I could find. Oh, I had Barbie dolls galore, but, as this book reminds us- the richest play times are the imaginative ones- with out todays fabricated props that dont allow our childrens minds to create.
Not just for Waldorfians.......2002-03-12
I have dusted the cobwebs off of so many forgotten childhood memories since reading this book. This book has also been excellent for encouraging me to play more imaginatively with my kids. Children At Play is an unexpected life altering book.

Pennsylvania Impressionism
ASIN: 081223829X |
Book Description
In 1906 a young painter named Robert Spencer moved from the hustle and bustle of New York City to the bucolic Bucks County region in nearby southeastern Pennsylvania. Over the next twenty-five years, Spencer became one of the most prominent artists in the Pennsylvania impressionist art colony, a group of nationally known landscape painters centered in the picturesque village of New Hope. His first major success came when the Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased Repairing the Bridge in 1914. He won a gold medal in 1915 at the prestigious Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. After Spencer's death, the celebrated collector Duncan Phillips praised him as "a rebel always against the standardized and stereotyped in art." Phillips believed that there was "no other painter, not John Sloan, or Edward Hopper, more pungently American in expression."In matters of style, Spencer differed radically from his Pennsylvania impressionist colleagues. He made his reputation with skillful, evocative renderings of the everyday life of his community, often depicting the mills, tenements, and factories of New Hope and the surrounding areas. "A landscape without a building or a figure," he said, "is a very lonely picture to me." Later Spencer began to experiment with a looser, more spontaneous style, and he painted more fanciful European scenes, many of which were done from his imagination. Spencer's canvas Mountebanks and Thieves won a prize at the 1926 Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh, and juror Pierre Bonnard said, "Mr. Spencer . . . is in the full vigor of his talent, which is great. His art does not resemble European art, a rare fact in America."Spencer battled depression throughout his adult life and committed suicide in 1931. This book tells the story of Spencer's colorful yet tragic life, using as sources the written recollections of his two daughters as well as extensive new research. Illustrated with nearly seventy-five color images from major museums and private collections, the book examines the artist's work in depth, from his unformed beginnings to his mature New York City and European images. Extensive excerpts from his correspondence with Duncan Phillips and from press articles and reviews are also included, making The Cities, the Towns, the Crowds the definitive study of this important American painter.

The Cities, the Towns, the Crowds:: The Paintings of Robert Spencer.......2007-08-10
I'm sorry to say this book is VERY disappointing! The text is good, but the images and reproductions are of poor quality. After all, why does one buy an art book? For reasonably faithful images! I have seen actual Spencer paintings before, and the colors of the reproductions in this book are so far off from the colors of the original paintings that it is a shame to attribute them to the wonderful American painter Robert Spencer.
