This book was a great disappointment. The book only covers the most generic tourist spots, and on the subject of the Red Light district unacceptably refuses to even review or mention anything dealing with coffeeshops or prostitution. If you want a bland and intentionally incomplete guide, this would be the book for you. If you want an unbiased and complete guide, try the Time Out Guide to Amsterdam instead.

    Book Description

A compelling introduction to the fathers of America's presidents
After so much literature about first ladies and first families, here finally is a fascinating book focused on the fathers of our presidents. This lively and entertaining account of 44 disparate men reveals how they inspired, motivated, and influenced sons who ultimately ascended to the presidency. They include two who were themselves presidents, John Adams and George H. W. Bush, as well as two stepfathers, those of Gerald Ford and Bill Clinton. First Fathers captures the whole range of the American experience—from utter destitution to immense wealth, from enormous success to abject failure, unified by a common thread—the restless, ambitious, quintessentially American pursuit of happiness.

Harold I. Gullan, PhD (Philadelphia, PA), is a distinguished presidential scholar and the author of the highly praised Faith of Our Mothers, on the mothers of American presidents, and The Upset That Wasn't, on the dramatic 1948 election.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but lightweight..........2006-08-20

I have always been interested in presidential history, but except for Joe Kennedy, James Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., I haven't read much about the fathers of our presidents. Harold Gullan fills in the gaps with his interesting but lightweight First Fathers: The Men Who Inspired Our Presidents.

In First Fathers, the author looks at the lives of 42 fathers and two step-fathers. It is interesting to draw comparisons between these men, even though some of their lives were very different. Many of the early presidents lost their fathers at a very young age. Some went from rags to riches, while others did just the opposite. If you had to pick characteristics that the majority of them shared, three things seem to be the common denominators. First, they valued education, even if they themselves were not educated. Most saw that their sons received the best education that they could afford. Second, they were adventurous and ambitious. Many were willing to risk everything at the chance for a better life. And finally, a large number of them were public spirited and believed in public service. Probably more fathers served as justices of the peace than any other public job.

First Fathers is filled with lots of trivia, presidential and otherwise. These include first president born in a log cabin (Jackson), first born in a hospital (Carter), first US citizen elected president (Van Buren), first born west of the Mississippi (Hoover), first bachelor president (Buchanan), first president married in the White House (Cleveland), and first father to outlive his president son (Harding). There is more information on some fathers than others, which makes for uneven reading. Some fathers warrant their own chapters, while others are lumped together.

First Fathers is an interesting book, although it is more of a superficial overview as opposed to a deep, scholarly work. Still, it's a good place to start to give us information on how first fathers motivated their more famous sons. Gullan also wrote Faith of Our Mothers:The Stories of Presidential Mothers from Mary Washington to Barbara Bush, which I have yet to read. I imagine it is a good companion book to First Fathers.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift idea!.......2005-08-17

After reading it myself, I decided that this was the perfect gift for my father this past Father's Day. He loved it, and it opened up a great conversation about the role of dads in general. I highly recommend this book as a gift for the birthday or or other celebration of a father in your life.

4 out of 5 stars I learned a great deal from this book!.......2005-05-12

I realized after reading this book how much of what I read here was totally new to me, although I have read a good deal about the presidents. It seems, though, that much more focus is always put on the mothers of presidents, and the fathers are somewhat overlooked. I really enjoyed learning what sort of fathers inspired their sons to be presidents!

This book is scholary and well written. At times, the language is a bit formal and for my taste, a little overly flowery. It has the feel of a book written in the early part of the 1900s---which is certainly not all a bad thing! It's not written in the casual style of so many books today.

I was especially fascinated to read about Teddy Roosevelt's father. I had no idea he was such a well loved person, and as the author says, the closest to a perfect father of any profiled here. The story of Gerald Ford's birth father and then his step-father should be an inspiration to step-fathers everywhere.

    Definately worth a read!

5 out of 5 stars Winderful insight into the men behind the men at the healm!.......2004-06-17

The author eloquently serves up a biographical feast of the fathers of the leaders! It's not so much an ideological review of the fathers' influences on the Presidents but an analysis of the influence (or lack of) influence the men had fostering. The most interesting review if that of Andrew Grant and his father's strict upbringing, without which, we would not have had this military leader and President.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift For Father's Day and All Year Long.......2004-06-08

Fascinating and well-written look at the fathers of all 43 American Presidents--many well-known, many less so. Gives a great perspective on the forces that shaped our nation's leaders and, in many cases, explains a lot about their values, political philosophies and sources of inspiration. I cannot recommend highly enough this timely and wonderful book.

    Book Description

"Most diseases can be separated from one's self ... schizophrenia is something we are." So begins Mark Vonnegut's depiction of his descent into, and eventual emergence from, mental illness. As a recent college graduate, self-avowed hippie, and son of a counterculture hero, Vonnegut begins to experience increasingly delusional thinking, suicidal thoughts, and physical incapacity. In February 1971 he is committed to a psychiatric hospital. The Eden Express, an ALA Notable Book first published over 25 years ago, is his honest, thoughtful, and moving account of the illness of schizophrenia. This edition features a new foreword by Kurt Vonnegut and a new preface by the author. "Required reading for those who want to understand insanity from the inside." — The New York Times

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Eden Express.......2007-10-10

The book seemed one very large introduction to the last 30 pages. I found it rather difficult to read, depending on a lot of slang American language. Still, the message of the book is hopeful. It is possible to lead a normal life, even if you have schizofrenia. The most important part of the book is how the author manages to get out of his frenzy by taking his medication and vitamine supplements. The book would win by making the first part a lot shorter and adapt the language to European English so that also Europeans can read it.

    4 out of 5 stars the insider's view.......2007-04-16

This is a pretty scary look into the mind of a schizophrenic, from his shakily maintained environment as a late 1960s hippie to his complete psychotic breakdown. It is the worst possible thing you could imagine happening to your child I think, a waking nightmare: Vonnegut describes, with startling talent, his visions. Many of them are remarkable, from a face coming towards him until he is lost in one of its pores, to intimate interactions with angels, while resurfacing in reality every so often. Not only is the horror and lack of control brought to life, but so is the beauty and untapped potential of the human mind, such as his recitation of Moby Dick from memory.

While many of the reviewers scorn the author as a silly naif, I find him sympathetic and brilliant, indeed courageous to explore and expose himself in this way. In the process, he debunks a lot of what was common talk of the period, such as the society and not the individual being "sick" or the total freedom that he thought he could find. Thus, it is a lament on the illusions of the time and about growing up, issues that many critics of the 1960s would do beter to acknowledge. I was also a Vonnegut fan, so the inights into his family interested me.

It is but one window, of course, into a horrible state of existence. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A terribly compelling and incredible story.......2004-02-26

Two years ago I was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and have since been put on medication and fully recovered. My therapist suggested that I read Mark Vonnegut's telling of the descent into schizophrenia. I've read other accounts of schizophrenia, but Mark's definitely takes the cake in terms of realism. I'm not even sure if I can finish the book, the book is so unsettling for me. If someone you care about has schizophrenia, read this book, it will help you understand what this disease does.

    5 out of 5 stars A great schizophrenia memoir.......2003-03-19

There are only a handful of memoirs about schizophrenia, and this book and "The Quiet Room" are probably the best ones available. The author apparently inherited his father's excellent writing and storytelling abilities, as this is an engaging and insightful description of life in the 1960s and the descent into and emergence from schizophrenia. The description of the illness alone makes the book worth reading, and is in some ways reminiscent of "Darkness Visible" and "The Bell Jar". The book is also quite humorous. Highly recommended. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Personal Account.......2003-02-13

I am 15 years old and I read this book for a Schizophrenia research paper. Mark Vonnegut has been my doctor in Boston all of my life. It was an interesting journey to explore through HIS perspective of his own experience... Highly Reccomend it!

5 out of 5 stars Making Natural Liquid Soaps: Herbal Shower Gels is a good reference book.......2007-05-14

This book not only explains the mechanics of how to make the soap but it also explains the chemistry in practical ways. This enables me to make up my own recopies to the amount I desire with the proper balance of lye to different kind of oils. It also has starter recipes for the beginners. In short, I think this book is great for the beginner and one who wants to begin to be more creative in their soap making.

          1 out of 5 stars Rip-off.......2005-09-25

This book is a rip-off. If you want simple, easy recipes to follow, don't buy this book. This book gives a lot of useless information and is poorly written.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, a bit confusing.......2005-04-20

I read this book countless times trying to absorb the processes before I began. I was a bit intimidated, but was that way with CP soaping as well, so knew it was all about "diving in". I've tried two batches of the alcohol method and they were extremely thin. After boiling the soap down for a whole day it got thick, but then crystals started appearing the next day. I probably put too much borax in, but don't really know since I messed so much with the recipe trying to first melt the soap completely (it says if doesn't dissolve it's too concentrated) then thickening it up (then it was like water). Just made my second batch and it's sitting there, thin as can be at 40% soap, with the maximum recommended Borax. I hope to write a better review with a successful batch.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not practical.......2005-03-23

After making cold process soap for several several years, and working in product development for a major soap company, I must say that this book is interesting, but not very practical and certainly confusing. I suppose I need more science to really understand this process. I found the soap to be very drying, with a "fat" smell that was really hard to cover. Also, the shelf life was not very long.

3 out of 5 stars I expected more from this book........2003-08-31

I was a bit disappointed with this book. Given the author's years of experience with making liquid soaps, I expected something "great", sort of along the lines of Susan Miller Cavitch's The Natural Soap Book and it's sequel The Soapmaker's Companion, as those who make cold-processed soap will attest. First of all, I found the author's explanation of the use of the pH indicator (phenolphthalein) hard to follow: a color change from red to pink indicates that the soap mixture has been neutralized but the pH is still around 8 or 9 (Hmmmm!). The author also has a definite bias for clear liquid soaps that is reflected in the recipes that are included throughout the book and influences the scope of her writing. I would have preferred a more objective approach to liquid soapmaking that left the final say about the qualities of the liquid soap to the reader/soapmaker.

The book was well-written and easy to read. There were concrete examples of expectations during this age. Each section also had a short piece that was written from the child's perspective. I found this technique effective and it helped to further illuminate the issues that were being discussed. Overall, the book helped me to gain a better understanding of what my 3 1/2 son is experiencing at this stage in his life.

This is a great book for the on the go parent. It is very easy to read (great for the treadmill). It gives you an idea what your 3-4 is feeling in a child's voice. I have suggested it to all my friends who wonder if their kid is "normal".

This is an easy to read, practical book for the parent of a 3-4 year old. It offers easy to read information without the drudgery of tons of reading. I think Parent Magazine is fabulous, having subscribed to it for many years myself. I'm so pleased to see that they are giving the best of what they have to offer in this book. As a behavior specialist and author of The Voucher System Behavior Management Program, I have spent a great deal of time and effort looking for a book that addresses the challenges and questions that often arise with a four year old. (Children are learning so much at age four and need a great deal of parent/child interaction. It's also the age where they learn that "no" really means "no".) This book is my choice for the best most concise book on children of this age. I highly recommend it! I also recommend the book that follows this one on the 5-6 year old.

Georgia O'Keeffe, who was born in 1887 and lived nearly 99 years, was a prolific, successful artist whose work was exhibited continually throughout her adult life. To give an impression of the scope of this two-volume boxed set, here is a sentence from the preface by Barbara Buhler Lynes: "The catalogue reproduces and describes 2,045 objects, made by O'Keeffe between 1901 [when she was 14] and 1984." And for an idea of the care Lynes brought to her task, here is the next: "Of these, 2,029 were located and examined between June 1992 and December 1998: 821 on canvas or board; 1,137 on paper...."

Obviously, this catalog will be indispensable to many libraries and museums, but it is also a work that any lover of O'Keeffe's art will pore over for years. From the first pages of volume 1, a reader is struck by the early appearance of motifs that remained essential to O'Keeffe throughout her life: architectural forms; flowers; vases and vessels with monumental, simplified shapes. (After the early years, however, she deals with the human metaphorically, in phallic sculptures or nipple-like seed pods, or the swollen bellies of clay pots.) For those readers who may have fallen out of love a bit during the 1970s--when O'Keeffe's least works seemed to be included in every gathering of second-rate, so-called women's art--these two volumes will renew their passion. Her astonishing talent, which she never betrayed, pulses through these color-saturated pages. While most works are necessarily reproduced smaller than the originals, the book's designers have dealt thoughtfully with issues of scale by increasing the size of the reproductions as O'Keeffe's paintings became larger and printing her vast, late cloudscapes and other large works at full- or double-page size. This is typical of the sensitivity with which this catalog was conceived. --Peggy Moorman

Well produced and comprehensive, as a whole it adds up to a devastatingly beautiful record of the life's work of the artist with accompanying text on her key influences and relationships.

Like a museum in a box, quite frankly. You can find it for $99 (yes, the entire set, full size, etc.) at The Met museum's online shop- a great bargain ~ metmuseum.org

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2001-03-06

I was not a fan of Georgia O'Keefe before checking this volume out from the library. Now, I am frankly astonished by the beauty of her work especially her watercolors which are vibrant, clean, and just beautiful. It will be an eye opener to anyone who has formed their opinions solely on her giant flower or cow skull paintings-- whether you like her or not. She was an artist that constantly explored different techniques from printmaking to sculpture. She is inspirational. If you have a library that carries the volume I encourage you to check it out first you will be pleasantly surprised. I am definitely going to purchase these books.

            5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Gift.......2000-05-25

This book was on my wish list before it was published! I received it as a gift upon my graduation from Art Center College of Design. I have loved Georgia O'Keefe's work since I was very young, and I have most of the books published about her and this one is not only the most comprehensive but beautiful as well. In a review I read it was described as 'cumbersome', obviously not written by an artist. How can you reduce a life's work into one volume especially a life that was so influential to so many artists, especialy women. I give it my highest recommendation.

Georgia O'Keeffe's unconventional paintings of mountains, bones, and flowers--often on a giant scale--and her clear, simple forms and colors made her an early pioneer of a new American modernism. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in summer 1997 in Santa Fe, presenting works from all periods of the artist's long career. Providing a remarkable virtual tour through the museum, this beautiful clothbound volume with French folded jacket features essays by leading art writers such as Barbara Rose and Mark Stevens, and a new, thorough chronology by Charles Eldredge. Included in the 86 full-color images and 4 lavish gatefolds are many works that have never been reproduced before, which are complemented throughout by black-and-white photographs documenting the extraordinary life of this courageous, inventive artist (1887-1986). For O'Keeffe fans unable to travel to Santa Fe for a personal pilgrimage, this book is the next best thing.

            5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......1998-07-15

I really liked this. Lots of color reproductions of O'Keeffe's paintings, including several "fold-out" double pages. Covers her early mid and late periods. This is also a book about the museum devoted to her in New Mexico, The size of the book is nice too. A bit smaller than "coffee-table" huge dimension. A book you can browse through. Can be an introduction to Georgia O'Keeffe's art and life for somebody just learning about her, or can be extra fun for a real O'Keeffe fan.
