Excellent reading.......2004-03-27
I thought this book was excellent. I have read other books by this author and am impressed with her knowledge of the subjects she writes about. This book gives you very detailed information on everything that you need to know about visiting this beautiful little country.
Book Description
We all know George Washington the fearless leader, the brilliant general, our first president, and "The Father of Our Country". What we often overlook is Washington's deep spirituality.
Now, in Faith of Our Founding Father: The Spiritual Journey of George Washington, best-selling author Janice T. Connell gives an in-depth examination of Washington's spiritual life. Drawing upon Washington's personal writings, public speeches, eyewitness accounts and letters, Connell reveals the practical, down-to-earth faith that guided him throughout his life. From narrow escapes on the battlefield to braving cold and starvation, Washington often credited his life to "the all powerful dispensations of Providence".
In a world wracked by wars, terrorism, disease, starvation, immorality, and tyranny, the life of George Washington has a lot to teach us. The father of our country faced countless challenges throughout his life, not only on the road to establishing our nation, but also in his childhood, scarred by the early death of his father. It was George Washington's deep personal faith that allowed him to triumph over life's adversities, and it steeled him with the profound inner strength that carried him from the dark days of Valley Forge to the pinnacle of the Presidency.
This spiritual biography includes the entire text of the Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation, a text Washington learned by heart as a boy and that continued to guide his values throughout his life. In addition, it includes Washington's daily prayers. His prayer book, with a distinct prayer for the morning and afternoon of each day of the week, gave him comfort and strength all through his years.
George Washington was no stranger to sorrow, cold, hunger, persecution, violence, or terrorism. His deep sense of spirituality allowed him to stand strong in the face of adversity and triumph in the darkest of times. His story can bring similar strength and comfort to us all.
Customer Reviews:
As much a history as gravity is false.......2006-08-04
Quite interesting how tremendous in length someone would go to revision one of the greatest Americans to comform to the beliefs desired at the expense of the courtesy of doing him the justice of giving him a fair and objective historical analysis.
A Closet Religious Tract.......2004-11-08
Ms. Connell devotes the first half of this book to evangelical expository techniques. Therein, while she never formally labels Washington as a certified antecedent to today's regligious right, she attempts to leave that impression, no doubt with measurable effect on a reader who engages only the first part of the book. The tone of the book changes in the second half, almost as if written by a different author. The writing is more objective and historically accurate. I bought the book because when I selected Alf J. Mapp, Jr.'s The Faiths of our Founding Fathers for an Amazon order, I was offered Connell's book in a package deal. I know now, and I should have known when I ordered, that her publisher (Hatherleigh Press) was a give-away to the real nature of her book. Whether I should have known or not, Amazon should not have suggested to readers that Mapp, Jr.'s serious history and Connell's regligious tract would have similar appeal. Mapp, Jr., by the way, gives an excellent and accurate account of the faiths felt and practiced by Washington and other key figures of America's beginnings.
Well Documented Account of George Washington's Core Beliefs.......2004-04-05
Many people speak of the beliefs of the founding fathers and their political views. This book allows Washington to speak for himself -- with many verbatim transcripts and documented references. Very readable, providing one with a real perspective of the values of the day and, most importantly, the actual beliefs of George Washington himself without the "spin" of current day political pundits. Very refreshing and inspiring.
Religious fanatasism - yes, History - NO.......2004-03-14
This book is more a work of fiction than a proper historical treatment of Washington's religious beliefs. It was painful to read such stretches of imagination. In the environment today it's not surprising that our first President is being remade in the light that we want instead of what he was. If you are deeply christian and your not concerned about accuracy or facts, than I think you will enjoy this book. If you are looking for a non fiction treatment of the subject or a historical view, look elsewhere.
A Hero for These Times.......2004-02-21
Though I have always liked George Washington, this book has allowed me recognize him as America's greatest hero. The Spiritual Journey of George Washington is a luminous torch. I reread parts of this book every day. Washington's spirituality is incredibly contemporary. His wisdom is powerful. His discipline, the amazing protection he had in battle, his extraordinary humility - refusing to become the first King of the United States - all these and other explanations in this book of seminal events in George Washington's life make me appreciate what it took for the United States to become a nation.
Book Description
Brooke Ellison was the victim of an automobile accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down when she was eleven years old. Written with her mother, Jean, her closest companion, Brookes story starts on the day that changed her life. This inspiring story is not just about one person, but about the heroics of a family.
Customer Reviews:
One Mother, One Daughter, One Journey.......2007-03-29
I believe this was a terrific book. It was filled with excitement when Brooke graduated form Harvard University. This book was one of those books where you always wanted to know what is going to happen next. I learned that even though you are paralyzed you can still be a straight A student. I do recommend that all people will love this wonderful non-fiction book because it describes a great biography about a 7th grade girl named Brooke and her mother Jean that led the way for her.
Inspiring story of hope and the strength of human spirit.......2005-03-11
Brooke Ellison's magnificent achievements, both because and in spite of her disability, can't help but inspire the reader. Her biography is both a tribute to her and to her loving family, especially her mother. I didn't find the story lacking because it didn't discuss her daily life and limitations in depth; I think perhaps she wanted to maintain SOME privacy in a life that of necessity has sacrificed so much of it, and the whole point of her story is that Brooke is not defined by her disability. I think the true tragedy of her accident was not that she was so severely changed, but that we were all so nearly robbed of a remarkable and gifted human being. I wish Brooke and her family well, and hope to see her on the speaking tour. Five stars for an inspiring story.
Inspiring An Unbelievable Mom.......2005-02-27
Brook Ellison really could be an inspiration to us all.Her positive outlook and her "go get em" attitude really is inspiring. That said, her mother Jean is a phenomenal women. I cannot imagine getting up everyday,7 days a week,24 hours a day at 4;00 am to bath, dress, feed, and groom another human being. Would I do it for my daughters? Of course, but it is easy to say that when you are not in the same situation. Let's face it,we have all griped about having to drop them at friends homes, going to pick them up at school when they are sick etc....This woman is one to definitely be admired. The other day I was on a message board reading all these nitwits gush on about a certain mobsters daughter and how much they admire her...WHY??? I posted about this book and this extraordinary woman, truly God blessed Brook with having Jean as a mom. I also think she was blessed by all the sacrifices her brother, sister and father made as well to make her dream come true. Brook's sister stated in an interview that the movie does not have their Grandmother in it and they should have, as she was the one who cared for the rest of the family when Brook and her mom were away. Jean is truly a modern day hero. God Bless the whole Ellison family.
The Brooke Ellison Story - a wonderful book!!.......2005-01-28
This biography/autobiography was amazing. It pulls you in right from the beginning and keeps you there. It is a sad book, but it has happy times and it can make you laugh and cry. The Brooke Ellison Story was very well written. Each chapter switches back and forth from the daughters' perspective, to the mothers' perspective. It was absolutely wonderful.
On Brooke Ellison's first day of seventh grade she was hit by a car on her way home from school and left paralyzed from her neck down, and relying on a respirator for her every breath. This story tells how she made it through, and 10 years later graduated from college.
Reading this book has opened my eyes to reality, and what happens almost every day to people around the world. Reading this book, on how she lived was astonishing. All the things Brooke accomplished even though she was paralyzed, was amazing.
"Try to imagine being in a chair with your feet bound and your hands tied behind your back. Then imagine being on a machine that gives you thirteen breaths per minute and doesn't allow you to sigh, or take a deep breath when you feel you need one. Then imagine never being able to use the bathroom or shower when you want to, to brush you teeth, feed yourself, scratch an itch, or wipe your eyes if you need to cry. Imagine never having any privacy, not being able to be physically intimate, or never being able to hug someone when you really want to. Compound that with sleepless nights when you are unable to breathe, equipment failures that threaten your life, and wheelchair malfunctions that leave you stranded in bed. Then put yourself in one of the most rigorous academic settings in the world and ask yourself to read thousands of pages of text without being able to turn the pages; attend lectures, seminars, and labs in all kinds of god-awful weather, study, prepare papers, take tests, and then do an original independent research thesis, submit it on time, and ultimately defend it. That will just start to scratch the surface of what it's like for Brooke." - Jean Ellison
I recommend this book to people who enjoy books that reach out to you and drag you in, only letting you go when you finally decide to close the book. Books that you say you're going to stop, but then you find you are ten pages later already. This books brings tears and laugher, and is wonderful.
inspiring but needed more depth.......2004-12-12
I like the reviewer "Martina" found the book inspiring yet also believed that it could have provided more depth to the
day to day experience of what it is to be a quadripalegic. Mrs. Ellison only gives the readers a glimpse of this experience when she talks about how Brooke has to be suctioned each day and turned to avoid bedsores. Maybe like "Martina" I'm gross for wanting to read about such information, but I as well like to take away new information and understanding from the subjects I read about. I would still recommend this book and the movie as both are inspiring and a true testament of how with great desire a person can achieve their dreams.

Funny to read and great stories.......1999-04-22
I have read three of Nolan Carlson's books and I liked them all. I liked how he split the adventures of the boys into the chapters. I think that you Carlson is the only person who will start a secqil(spelling?) at the same place as the first book starts. I hope he writes more stories like that because those are the only one I will keep reading after I say I will stop. I really was interesting in his books.

soap making for beginners.......2007-05-17
This book was very helpful with starting soap making
The delivery was on time. "thank you"
Great Resource For Beginners.......2006-12-20
In this book there are tips for making hand-milled soap, melt and pour soap and cold-pressed soap. It contains 19 soap recipes, some of which are illustrated in the middle of the book and look just like desserts - and no wonder with names like Chocolate and Coffee Lover's Temptation, Fresh As A Cucumber, Nancy Bee's Honey, Ron's Refreshing Raspberry, etc.
I was personally more interested in the first part of the book, but for those who'd like to make soap for profit, the second part of the book deals with business aspects, as in how and where to sell your soap, what to charge for it, how to go about promoting it and it covers possible legalities that is good to be aware of.
For me, an excellent book for beginners........2006-09-29
I am a beginner with soapmaking and purchased several soapmaking books prior to starting the craft. Of all the books read, this one was the simplest for me to follow. It was straight forward and provided one of the easiest and quickest methods for calculating sodium hydroxide and water. For the new soapmaker, I believe this is definitely one soapmaking book that you should read.
Not For Old-Time Soapmaking.......2005-08-28
This book is good for those who prefer to use the "modern" way to make soap, which is cold-processing. Why make soap in the first place if you are going to do it the simple way?
True soapmaking is done by cooking soap, and this book has no information on that process. The book does give helpful hints about specifics on oils and herbs to use, as well as other soapmaking knowledge - but don't get it if you want specific information on making soap the traditional way. James Herschberger is the soap GURU when it comes to classic soapmaking.
I'm so disappoint ........2005-08-05
Not a soap maker book.
Just saying common things that everybody knows.

Good professionals book and for the self medicating desperate mum at home
A Must for all women!.......2006-05-12
As a future midwife and current nursing student, my biggest fear for women today is the lack of education on their rights in regards to their own healthcare. Many women do not question the medications or therapies their doctors suggest, and unfortunately many health professionals are prone to the "quick fix." This leaves many women disappointed in side effects or unaware of potential damage occurring within their bodies. This book is a must for all women seeking true answers to their health options as well as options for their children. It is enlightening and informative, and it does not discount traditional medicine all together. It simply encourages women to take an active role in their healthcare and know that they have rights and choices during a very important time in their lives. Thank you, Miranda Castro for an educational, comprehensive, and non-biased reference!
Must Have Book for Pregnancy and Motherhood.......2005-03-27
Not only does this book give you very specific information on using homeopathic remedies, it focuses on emotional as well as physical symptoms (which is essential to homeopathy). The sections on labor and post-partum are some of the most informative I've read in my pregnancy. Detailed, honest, and non-judgmental, the book covers the myriad and often complicated emotions mothers may encounter during pregnancy and labor, and offers ways to deal with these issues naturally (often with simple practices like taking a bath). This book covers, in detail, several birth complications, and ways the mother can deal with these during labor. This is all done with very easy to read and matter of fact language. No foofy new-age stuff here. I wish every pregnant woman in the world could have the information contained in this book. If you are considering it, BUY IT NOW!
Wonderful!.......2003-12-19
I started using this book when I was 8 months Pregnant and have used it ever since. I find that I turn to it at least once a week to find a remedy for my family and friends. This is a great book!

Customer Reviews:
401 Old ways to bore your kids........2006-03-22
This book is way too outdated for our hectic, electronic, urban life. I don't recommend it, it doesn't take into consideration that we don't live in a farm and that our kids watch television and surf the web too. I have to say that I only read it briefly and decided it didn't apply to me.
Good Ideas for a house full of kids!.......2006-03-03
This book had lots of great information about the things we NEED to teach our kids before they venture out into the unknown. With 5 kids ranging in age from 18 years to 10 months, everyone is in a different place and it has been fun to watch the younger kids learn from the older kids. We have some goals in place for each kid and they are eager to start learning lots of "grown up" things!
Excellent Book!.......2000-01-02
I borrowed this book from the library and felt lost when I had to give it back. So I want to get one for myself to keep and use whenever I need to reference back to it. Great ideas that we will definitely be using around here.
Good practical advise for teaching life skills to kids.......1998-10-03
I am already utilizing several ideas from this book and I haven't finished reading it yet! The concept of teaching practical life skills to one's children to develop their self-confidence as well as helpfulness is great. My children are responding very well to new habit formation. They are also looking forward to getting their own recipe book with foods they can make themselves without Mom hanging around.
Well worth reading...and rereading periodically........1998-05-27
This is a great book. I've been hording my neighbor's dog-eared copy for a few years now. Every time I look at it, I find something other tool to try. I've finally decided that it is time to buy my own copy and let my neighbor lend hers to someone else who could use it.

Book Description
Though Irish dramatists have been writing plays for centuries, Irish drama is largely a product of the last hundred years and is deeply rooted in the political and social ferment out of which Ireland emerged as an independent nation. The creation of Irish drama is primarily the story of the Abbey Theatre, founded in 1897 as the Irish Literary Theatre by Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn, and William Butler Yeats. Though the Abbey remains Ireland's national theatre, its existence and role have been challenged and critiqued by individuals who rejected its Irishness and who sought to introduce Irish audiences to the drama of continental Europe. Through its extended entries for 32 playwrights, this reference charts the history of Irish drama from the late 19th century to 1995. Included are profiles of some of the most important names in literature, such as George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge, Oscar Wilde, Sean O'Casey, and Samuel Beckett; along with more recent and less canonical authors whose works are nonetheless distinguished. Entries are written by expert contributors and are arranged alphabetically. Each entry includes a brief biographical sketch, production histories for major works, a critical assessment of the playwright's career, and extensive archival and bibliographical information. As an aid to locating general works on Irish drama, the volume concludes with a selected, general bibliography.
