Originally published in 1858 at the height of the passion for exotic specimens, this is the story of a young Bavarian botanist, Karl Linden, engaged in a plant-hunting expedition to the stupendous mountains of the Himalayas in Tibet. It is a vivid early narrative and primary souce, with commentaries on the Himalayas, plant hunting, inspecting cliffs, the Ibex & other fauna, ascent of mountains, aerostatics, and of course the botany and value of the plants they are collecting.

Mayne Reid, a pre-eminent and popular writer, was primarily a novelist (1818-1883) who wrote adventure stories from just before the Civil War until his death in 1883. Reid's career included two periods in the U. S: 1840-49 and 1867-70. He had emigrated to the United States in his early twenties, reaching New Orleans in January, 1840, where he pursued a varied career as a shopkeeper, overseer of slaves, schoolmaster, and actor, with occasional forays into hunting and Indian warfare. Reid returned to England in 1849, and embarked upon a successful career as a writer of adventure novels and books for boys He was a close friend of Poe (though their writings were miles apart), played a gallant role in the Mexican War, worked as a journalist and wrote most of his first novel while in the United States.

He was an influence on the young mind of Teddy Roosevelt, as Roosevelt reveals in his Autobiography; while Arthur Conan Doyle wrote in his 1890s essay "Juvenilia" that when young he always kept "Mr. Ballantyne or Captain Mayne Reid at my elbow"; Robert Louis Stevenson praised Reid in the Vailima Letters, and J. Frank Dobie has said he, "dared convey real information in his romances."

Beautiful and Charming.......2003-01-01

This was one of the first books by Mayne Reid I have read, so I did not know what the quality of text would be. Lucky was I to have picked out this book- it was more than I ever expected. First of all the setting is 19th century India, Himalayas. Three men go on a plant quest. Everything seems to go fine until they are trapped in a mountain valley where they have to finds means of survival.

Unlike many adventure books, not only is there action but also I found it very informative. It described a lot of the Indian customs and flora/fauna. Also this book was written in an attractive and amusing style: one that will not bore you much. The suspense will make you want to read more. So, in overall, a great book. One that not-nature lovers but adventure lovers should read.

The best gift for a young adventurous mind.......2002-09-18

In my early teens I have read every book by Captain Mayne Reid I could find. I devoured every word. I found Reid's adventure novels far more sofistcated and captivating than the similar writings by Jules Verne and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Well, to be fair, adventure novels are not what earned Conan Doyle his popularity (and knighthood) and Verne had a few novels that were comparable to Reid's.
Captain Reid wrote scientific adventures which were my introduction to biology and geography (this particular novel is full of fascinating botany). His romantic adventures were mesmerizing for a growing girl, although at the era when he was writing his audience was considered to be only boys. I guess girls were not supposed to care about surviving a locust attack or the best way to fight a cayman.
I am puzzled why Hollywood hasn't gotten hold of his complete works for guaranteed blockbusters.

A Charge to Keep is so upbeat and positive, in describing the Houston woman to whom he was engaged in college and from whom he "gradually drifted apart," Bush says simply: "I still think the world of her, and our parting was friendly. We were very young, we lived in different places, and we gradually developed different lives."

George W. has been labeled a lightweight by some; A Charge to Keep will do nothing to dispel that notion. It features lots of Bush family memories and numerous mentions of George W.'s famous parents, including letters from his president father. George W. has followed closely in his father's footsteps, attending the same prep school and college. He even belonged to the same secret society at Yale, Skull and Bones. From college it was on to flight school and the Texas Air National Guard, Harvard Business School, and then (again, like his father) the Texas oil business and politics. George W. seems mostly in sync with his father on policy issues as well. "A thousand points of light" is transformed slightly to become "compassionate conservative," which pops up in the final chapter more than 10 times. Readers will come away knowing many of the experiences and events that have helped shaped George W., but his future is still an open book. --Linda Killian

I've never seen another book that gets mostly just 1-star or 5-star ratings. That's how it manages the 3-star average. Don't bother reading the reviews. They depend only the political views of the writer, and not really on the book at all.

However, it's worth noting that by far most of the bad grammar and spelling in the reviews are from the voters who gave the book 5 stars. I can't imagine that that has ever happened with another book.

Glossy Bush.......2006-10-22

This book was written during the pivotal time in Bush's life between serving as Governor of Texas and choosing to run for the U.S. Presidency.

Without checking his facts or follow-through, the book fairly outlines several topics both personal and political where Bush feels passionately. In one sense the book is a fairly candid insight into the man -- I would say that his presidence is fairly consistent with the outline in this book -- and in another it's a fairly cozy memoir covering his daughters, his ownership of the Texas Rangers, his drinking and his courtship and marriage with his wife.

In another sense there is very little balance between Bush the successful leader and Bush the mistaken official. Almost every report here gives off only positive vibes. He speaks of learning here and there and moving on from his mistakes but in retrospect perhaps the whole book was an outline of what to expect of him as president -- results, devotion and faith-enriched judgment.

It's a history without a lot of pith meriting a read only because it is the man himself talking. Here and there he tells his side of things as only he can attest, but usually we're treated only to Bush's unflinching optimism and hand-wringing anecdotes of his rosy results.

If it weren't for the source, this book is not one to remember.

first of all...you stupid libs down here spraying your political rants and insane lies...go critique a michael more rag will you!

Some made the point this book doesn't give any new insights in the political mind of the president, and that's true, but it does a great job painting a picture of the man george W. Bush and his outlook on life...written before his defeating of enviromental cry-baby al gore the book talks about Bush as a father, husband, friend, neighbour...a side we don't see very often anymore after he took back the white house.

The book helps people remember Bush is human like every-one else...we learn a bit about his character and what's important to him. We read about the things that matter to him, the things libs refer too when they call him dumb, like loving the outdoors, being part of a comunity, working for your money (that's the #1 liberal 'no!no!'), raising your kids right,...

if you're a liberal, don't bother...this book won't help you "get it"...you don't have the IQ to "get it". If your interested in what bush is like in normal life, how he became the man (not the politician) he is today...read this book as an introduction to the life of the greatest president the world ever had safe for R.Reagan.

Cheater, Cheater, Cheater.......2006-09-09

If I had read this before the 2000 election. I would have learned that Americans want a leader that posseses honesty, compassion, morals, and the courage of his convictions. I should have at least pretended to posses some of these qualities. Bush stole Florida in 2000 and Ohio in '04, if you don't believe me just ask John Kerry. And where did I come up with that stupid imaginary lockbox stuff anyway?

I recently saw someone reading this book which I had never heard of before so I looked it up on Amazon. This tome was so moving and uplifting it brought tears to my eyes. Okay, I admit it wasn't the book itself but the reviews. And they weren't tears of joy or hope but tears of hysterical laughter. There were three categories - each engrossing in it's own way: the honest critique, which universally panned the book as as hackneyed as the author himself (and his co-writer, apologist, Hughes); the spoof, which embellished on Bush's phony life making him a Nobel Laureate and corporate magnate; and the honest, heartfelt descriptions that prove that no matter how incompetent, corrupt and morally bankrupt a person is, there's still that percentage of the population who believe he's a good, sincere, visionary leader. With the fortune of hindsight, the latter group stands out though. If you haven't read this book but still want to after reading this and other reviews (unless your looking for a laugh) then God... er, invisible man in the sky help us all!

Compared to my other review on the book: "Convert It.", this book is much better - at least it's a real "paperback"! The material is more up to date, however it is still somewhat dated. The newer controller chips available, tranformer technologies and battery technologies are described in a forward looking way... however these items are now easily available - so the book doesn't address them very well, they weren't reality at the time. Still a good read to get a comparison of different concepts. Your money might be better spent doing research on the pricey, but high tech Tesla Motors car. There is 2007 technology at work!

Very good introduction to the subject........2007-05-30

If you're not already sold on why you should consider an electric car, this book should help. It covers the pros/cons of buying, building or converting. Before you consider converting a car to be electric, read this book. I suspect spending a little now for knowledge might save a lot later when it comes to buying stuff!

Down to earth, well versed material. Very good reading........2007-03-07

No matter if you just want to learn a little more about EV technology or consideting to build your own Electric Car, this book will give you a wealth of information on all sorts of EV related topics. The book starts with EV history, then goes into EV practicality, then onto currently (well in 80's) available off the shelf technology, vehicle design, physics and aero dynamic principles and finally you get a walk through an actual EV conversion process. I like this book for the way it's formed and the way it flows. The author writes in plain language with plenty of advise and tips. Everything is simple, just like an EV is such a simple machine at it's core. After reading this book, you will get a clear picture where technology stands with EVs, why Internal combustion engine dominated our means of transport and finally how to desing and construct your own EV. Overall great book. One drawback however, this book is written in 80' and has a lot of hopes in it, which is sad to read at times. Like when author talks about newly developed prototype of GM Impact (later renamed EV1) the author puts high hopes for this progect, yet we all know what happened to this effort. You will want to read "Convert it" by Michael Brown after reading this book.

I'm reading this book again and again before I build my own. The info is timeless, but I know the world of EV has changed in 15 years.

Buy this book if you plan to convert a car to electric.......2006-10-23

The title says it all really.

Look this book is somewhat dated, and half the book seems devoted more to theoretical graphs and charts, facts and figures and the like, plus arguing why we *need* to switch to electric vehicles for city use.

However, having said that, it's well produced and you get 300 plus pages for less than US $ 14. (almost "double the book for half the price" compared to some others) This book is worth every penny and then some.

The contacts pages, (pages and pages of them) pre-dates the internet boom so has NO useful urls or email addresses. However with the many names and snail-mail addresses you could probably track businesses down easily enough (plus I'm a guessin' they still have the same phone numbers ! ).

I would look forward, at some future date, to an updated revised edition of this book being published

Until that happens, (if ever) I'd have no hesitation recommending this as one of the several texts that any novice car converter should read before starting their first conversion project.

A great book for both the experienced and novice gardener. Informative pictures, clear, concise and easy to follow.

However as many of us gardeners know the only way to prune is to get out there and do it! Mistakes will be made but hopefully not as many with this guide.

Didn't find this book very helpful. It's my first pruning book and I hope others are better. It was more of an overview than a 'how to, when to' guide. Even the specific plants it mentions only get a few sentences each.

The Eyewitness Garden Handbooks: Pruning and Training was such a tremendous help to me in developing the beautiful garden I had always wanted. It was able to walk me through the difficult process of espalier techniques that had always been so difficult to grasp from the other books I had read for this involved procedure. The beautiful pictures and easy to understand language made this a book I will use year after year! I would recommend it to everyone!

As other reviews write, it is certainly a humble book. The section on the training of young trees (a mere 2 1/2 pages) is concise, easy to follow, and copied by many newer authors. Available at most nursery stores. You can find thicker books with more pictures and more discussion, but still, no improvement. Available from: Martin Bio-Products, Burbank CA. Carried by many nurseries, incl. Walter Andersen in San Diego, CA.

This book has been recommended to me by many people for several years. Now that I have finally read it, I will be recommending it to any parent who wants to raise their children in a Biblical, God-centered way. Tripp is straight forward, honest, and convicting in his assessment of common mistakes we all make with our children, and offers alternatives based on scripture. It encourages one to really think about what we are training our children by how we are training them. It would be a really good book study for a small group, but it also very helpful for an individual to read.
