Book Description
This is the story of Reuven Shiloah - the man who established the Mossad, and laid the foundations for the intelligence community of the State of Israel. Although he was head of the Mossad for only two years, from its inception in April 1951 until his resignation in March 1953, Shiloah was considered an institution in himself, and through the organization that he created, he left his imprint on Israeli intelligence, playing a critical role in the complex and crisis-laden history of the establishment of Israel's formidable intelligence network. Shiloah manoeuvred his way around the grey world of undercover negotiations for three decades, from his induction at the beginning of the 1930s to his untimely death in 1959 at the age of 49. The book is based on private archives, and interviews with people who worked closely with Shiloah both in Israel and abroad.

Nation building through intelligence and secret diplomacy........1997-04-25
At the time when political, military and religius forces are active in the middle east, an updated version of the book by Haggai Eshed: "REUVEN SHILOAH - THE MAN BEHIND THE MOSSAD - Secret Diplomacy in the Creation of Israel" has been published in English.
The book which was originally published in Hebrew in 1988 tells the story of Reuven Shiloah, the founder of Israel's intelligence community and first head of the world famous MOSSAD.
The personality of Shiloah, who for years worked alongside the Jewish leadership in the pre-state years and during the first ten years after independence has almost been forgotten. Using newly opened and uncovered archives and first time interviews the book describes the exciting and mysterious life of Reuven Shiloah on the backround of some of the major events in the international arena in general and in the middle-east in particular during the years 1931-1959.
Some of the major activities described in the book are:
*Undercover work in Iraq in the 1930's.
*Intelligence ties with the Allies before and during world war 2.
*Paradroping Jewish activistes into occupied Europe.
*Forming and heading Israel's intelligence community after indipendence.
*Conducting secret negoatiations with king Abdallah of Jordan.
*Creating the base for the stratigic ties between Israel and the U.S.
*Forming secret treaties with Turkey, Iran and Ethiopia.
The book was written by the veteran journalist Haggai Eshed who passed away several months after the book was originaly published in 1988. The book is well researched and well written. A few of the issues raised remain unanswerd due to the scarcity of data and still classified documents.
The flowing translation and adaptation by David and Leah Zinder enable readers who are less informed about modern developments in the middle-east to fully comprehend and benefit from the book.
Former Prime Minister of Israel Mr. Shimon Peres, who worked with Shiloah in the early 1950's, has written an introduction to the English edition of the book.
A leading authority on the history of Israel's intelligence community, Prof. Yoav Gelber, has added an after-chapter summarising Reuven Shiloah's contribution to the structuring of Israel's intelligence.
The diverse fields and forms of the activities of Reuven Shiloah, who passed away in 1959 at the age of 49, are relevant to the present. The book is recommended for all those who are interested in the craft of intelligence and secret diplomacy as well as to students of modern middle-east and international affairs.

Customer Reviews:
This is a good book.......2007-06-08
Very detailed, Easy to read, very helpfull in setting up shop.
Complete it is not.......2007-05-07
Basically what I found is just when the book was getting into enough detail to be useful the section would end.
The book is fine if you haven't ever read an article on dust control. But a two page section on dust control from sanders right at the end of the book??? Come on give us a little meat here. Little detail is given on how to control dust with jigs or with equipment that doesn't have dust control.
I gave it 2 stars because I found it wasn't technically detailed enough to be useful and very vague in areas that really needed attention. Took me 3 hours to read it..I'll put it on the book shelve where ironically enough it will probably gather dust.
A complete guide.......2006-11-21
A very good starting point for anyone interested in woodshop dust control. Does a good job covering the hazards and methods of control of sawdust. It then goes on to describe methods for designing and installing a central dust collection system.
Great Book on Dust Control and Collection Method.......2006-07-04
This book provides a complete and detailed writing on the methods for woodshop dust control methods. It covers different strategies for controlling dust from simple respiratory protection devices(masks), shop ventillation and air filtration and dust collecting machines (portable and central units).
It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method for different situations and how to optimize each strategy for a given situation. Great and interesting book. Written in practical and easy to understand manner.
Details, details, details.......2006-03-26
Very good book. Unfortunately it brings up all the little details that I would have preferred not thinking about. Most people probably don't realize how dangerous dust is, and the author covers all the bases. After reading this book, you will have no excuses...

An excellent encyclopedia of woody plants, plus more........1999-06-09
There is a pocket version of this magnificent book, but I can't imagine not wanting the real thing. This is a book lovingly written by members of the renowned Hillier Arboretum. The book can be considered an excellent reference for all woody plants, not only trees and shrubs. Many vines are included as well as woody perennials and herbs.
The design is easy to use, laid out in order by genus, and includes many good color photos. All the major chapters include culture tips and information not easily found elsewhere. With more and more cultivars available each year, this work does not strive to be all-inclusive, but instead will stand the test of time as a guide to the real backbones of the garden: the trees, shrubs, vines, and woody perennials. This is a book for the beginner eager to learn more but will also capture the fascination of the more seasoned gardener. I continually reach for it when coming across an unfamiliar name, or enjoy perusing it after a trip the arboretum.
My favorite reference for woody plants.......1999-02-06
Simply put, I love this book! Its listings are extensive, and I can usually find the specific cultivar that I am looking for. The pictures are a good balance between close-up detail shots and distance shots that show the overall structure of the plant. The information is quite detailed and often includes such tidbits as, "This cultivar is beautiful, but quite susceptable to fireblight...". My one complaint is that they don't give estimates on the eventual size of the trees/shrubs. They do tend to clasify them as small/ medium/ or large, however they don't give a definition as to what size ranges these catagories correspond to. Other than that, however, I have no complaints what-so-ever, except for lack of funds to by all of the fantastic specimins I fall in love with in this book!
Superb! Better than Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs.......1998-12-28
Every connoisseur of ornamental trees & shrubs will love this book. Containing more than 3,000 crisp, very detailed color photos, including the most awesome Cedar of Lebanon photo one can imagine, it is the single best illustrated encyclopedia on the subject of woody ornamentals. Although it is based on ornamental plants that can grow in the United Kingdom, and therefore incomplete for the U.S. gardener (ex., Lagerstroemia (Crapemyrtle) was not included), it more than makes up for these few omissions in rich horticultural detail. Beginning with some basics (glossary of terms, U.S. and Canadian climate zone maps, basic biology of trees & shrubs, etc.), it quickly moves to topics of greater interest to the common gardening enthusiast, such as selection, care & maintenance, propagation, and pests & diseases of woody ornamentals. In the Plant Directory, the Latin and Common names of each plant are listed, followed by a detailed description of its character, its geographic derivation, the date that it was introduced into the nursery trade, the northern extreme of the U.S. and Canadian hardiness zone that it will live in unprotected, and whether or not it has received the Award of Garden Merit (AGM), given by the Royal Horticultural Society to recognize plants of outstanding excellence for garden use. A sample entry in the Plant Directory is "Prunus Sargentii (Sargent Cherry) Considered by many people to be the lovelist cherry, this is a round-headed, small deciduous tree with chestnut brown bark and bronze-red young foliage. The single pink flowers open in early spring, and the small, almost black fruits ripen in midsummer. It is one of the first trees to color in fall, when its leaves turn orange and crimson. Japan, Korea. Introduced 1890. Zone 4 U.S., 5b Can. AGM". The Plant Selector is of great value to the gardener, containing detailed listings of plants and trees for various soil types and growing conditions, plants of pendulous and upright habit, plants with ornamental bark, bold foliage, good Fall color, ornamental fruits, fragrant flowers and foliage, and flowering plants with typical time of flowering, just to name a few. In short, if you could only have one book on Ornamental Trees & Shrubs in your library, this should be the one.

excellent guide to color, seasons, soil, light.......2005-04-27
I love this book-- it includes numerous unusual shrub varieties throughout and is organized in a way I find very useful in planning my garden-- sections on color include purples, silvers, variegated, etc and well as on plant combinations to make the most or colors. Sections on the seasons help plan for interest throughout the year, whatever the height and light conditions you are facing. Sections on soils and light help with grouping plants that will thrive better together. Throughout, suggested good companions of other shrubs or perennials are helpful and inspiring. The photos are gorgeous. As I continue planning, I keep coming back to different sections to inspire me with different plants I hadn't considered. While the information on planting, pruning, and other care for different shrubs is less extensive in many cases, notice is often given where a shrub is fussy, dislikes wet soils, or where blooms are delayed for several years, for example. This is an excellent book for helping you envision and plan-- or revamp-- your garden.

This extremely practical and supportive guide empowers parents as they struggle with a child who may be bipolar. The authors' own family experiences, stories from hundreds of other parents of bipolar children, and input from a wide range of mental health professionals provide parents with specific information to deal with the everyday but incredibly challenging issues confronting the entire family. Among the helpful topics included are how to explore the possibility that a child's problem behaviors are a sign of mental illness; finding a mental healthcare professional who can make a diagnosis; understanding what a diagnosis is and isn't; learning parenting strategies to control a child's behavior at home, at school, and in social situations; and balancing the needs of a bipolar child with the needs of everyone else in the family.

Pediatric BP from a parent's view.......2005-07-09
It is wonderful to read a book for parents that is written by a parent. This is someone who understands my daily life. This is a practical guide. I wish I had this book when my son was diagnoised 2 1/2 years ago! I would suggest this book and "The Bipolar Child" as manditory reading for a parent (or family member) whose child has been diagnoised with bipolar.
If Your Child Is Bipolar: The parent-parent guide to living .......2005-02-06
I purchased this book on January 1, 2004, when I accidentally stumbled upon it at The Tattered Cover Bookstore when I was searching for additional books to add to my own library on the topic of early onset bipolar disorder. This book, is by far, the easiest to understand, makes the most sense, especially to the lay person who may not be a Psychiatrist or Psychologist, and as a parent and a health provider ( a retired Registered Nurse) I found the language appropriate for anyone who lives with and loves a bipolar child. I honestly feel that this book saved my sanity regarding my experience with my bipolar child. I have read and reread this book many times, highlighting in green, yellow, pink and orange with each new read. I have suggested to everyone that I know, personally involved with a bipolar child, to buy and read this book. It makes sense to own it for me as I am constantly looking for pieces of the puzzle or reminders that I may have forgotten since I last read it. This truly is a MUST read for all families with a child that they love who happens to be bipolar. I cannot thank Cindy Singer and Sheryl Gurrentz enough for putting their hearts into this book.
Practical information, heartfelt empathy.......2005-01-16
Child and adoelscent psychiatrists are still debating clearer definitions of pediatric bipolar disorder. While we are working this out, we are still faced, here and now, with very complicated, difficult children; Children who tax the energy and resources of schools and families. Faced with diagnostic ambiguity, you can end up with "true believers" on either end of the spectrum: Those who have a very broad definition of bipolar disorder, and those who feel that these difficult, emotionally labile children have other diagnoses.
I liked this book because it is not political either way. The book is by a parent. She is more focused on dealing with the realities of these difficult children. This said, she also believes in being a strong advocate for the child when the parent feels that professionals are missing the child's symptoms and special needs.
Each section includes informational material interspersed with personal vignettes from the author and many other parents. I liked that she included stories from so many families, because each family encounters different professionals, schools and social situations. With so many voices, parents will find some that reflect their own experiences.
Figuring out what you are dealing with: Children with bipolar disorder and other related conditions often go through many different diagnoses, therapies and school settings. Diagnosis and treatment are often an ongoing journey, even if you have excellent clinicians and a good school. She provides solid information to help parents ask intelligent questions and challenge opinions that do not seem to fit.
Adjusting to the diagnosis: She talks about the emotional rollercoaster that most parents experience when they are trying to come to grips with the fact that their child has a severe, probably chronic disorder. How do you love this child? How do you deal with your own anger and grief? Sometimes stressed, grieving parents do make mistakes.
Helping your child get treatment: She talks about interactions with therapists and school systems. this section is useful for parents who need suport in feeling empowered to speak up.
The sections on taking care of yourself and on having a bipolar child in the family are my favorites. I hope that clinicians read these sections. Ideally, children with bipolar disorder should have two parents in the house and a supportive extended family. Too often though, marriages fall apart under the strain. When confronted with a difficult child, clinicians should immedately do whatever they can to support the family structure and build in comunity support. The author talks about how she and other families found outside support, even when marriages were failing and extended families did not understand.
Helping your child like with bipolar disorder: Finally she discusses how you talk to your child and help him or her develop a positive self esteem. It is difficult to determine how you teach the child responsibility for his or her actions.
Support Group in Print.......2004-10-14
This book is so helpful in reminding me that I am NOT alone in this !! It is not written from a medical standpoint such as Papols' work, but is written by a PARENT for other PARENTS. Includes examples of behavior that you find with bipolar kids and some of the examples are from the kid's viewpoint. Fascinating ! One of the most important things I gained from a practical standpoint is that out insurance company should be viewing my son's bipolar diagnosis as a MEDICAL condition not a MENTAL HEALTH condition. This would increase our benefits about 10-fold. Highly recommend this book !!
Basic Info about Bipolar Kids.......2004-10-07
If you are just learning about bipolar disorder in children, this could be a good starter or overview book, along with Papalos' "The Bipolar Child," which for my money is THE resource when you're staring down this diagnosis in a child you love. But I found it too general for my needs.
