Net accumulated areal activity densities and profiles of ^2^1^0Pb"e"x, ^7Be and ^1^3^7Cs in the surface 10cm of the soil are reported for eight sites in Southeast Queensland, Australia. Areal activity densities of ^2^1^0Pb"e"x and ^7Be varied from 1080 to 4100Bqm^-^2 and from 176 to 778Bqm^-^2, respectively. A significant (p <0.001) portion of the variance (R^2>0.99) in their vertical distributions was explained by depth in the profile using an exponential function. Around 85% of accumulated ^2^1^0Pb"e"x was present in the surface 10cm of the soil. Beryllium-7 was mainly confined to the grass and surface 2cm of the soil. Average penetration half-depths of 3.6+/-0.2 and 0.3+/-0.1cm were determined for ^2^1^0Pb"e"x and ^7Be, respectively. Areal activity densities of global fallout ^1^3^7Cs varied from 10 to 361Bqm^-^2. Its signal was well mixed within the surface 10cm. Comparison of the measured ^1^3^7Cs values to the estimated input value for the region (~490Bqm^-^2) and profiling of a 1m deep soil core suggests a vertical migration of ^1^3^7Cs over the past decades. The paleo-radon activity flux determined from the ^2^1^0Pb"e"x areal activity density (5.1+/-0.9mBqm^-^2s^-^1) was not statistically different to that measured using activated charcoal cups (5.5+/-0.4mBqm^-^2s^-^1), tending to suggest that Southeast Queensland is neither a net source nor a net sink of ^2^1^0Pb-bearing aerosols.

Frommer's Tuscany & Umbria's Best-Loved Driving Tours.......2007-03-23

Great book with good ideas. I wished it had been a little more detailed, especially as it relates to places to stay and eat along the way. More detailed road directions, with numbers, would also be helpful. A distance chart from city to city would give us a better idea of time to allow. But, it did give us ideas of places to visit that we hadn't originally thought about when we first started planning our trip. We look forward to driving several of the various trips the book describes. You definitely need to have an Italy road map to follow the trips.

A novelisation for mass consumption.......2007-05-20

This is simply not a serious piece of work. It tries to be non-fiction while writing it within the style of fiction.

It reminded me of those books that come out with a film saying "Based on the screenplay of the film."

The Bureau and the Mole by David Vise was far better and revealed the same information.

Excellent choice of overall theme.......2007-03-27

Every page of this book is surprising and thought provoking. You gotta' read it. Lawrence Schiller's outstanding and concise writing is greatly aided by his research collaboration with Norman Mailer. They found a theme despite the fact that the deepest motivations of Robert P. Hanssen's behavior while turning himself into the spy who created the greatest breach of security in U.S. history--remain buried within himself. Critics of the movie of this book, cry out for a better peek into Hanssen's psyche, but it is unattainable. The book's theme had to be what it is, describe the observable conflict between Hanssen's psychosexual,religious, and political views, match them to chronological events, then put it all in such a way as to invite readers to pick up from there. I guessed that the doors to the Opus Dei group, to which Hanssen and his family were devoted, were barred to Schiller and Mailer. The most that could be written about it was written. (Opus Dei is also a subject of "Godfather III"). Schiller captures Hanssen's Moscow handlers, themselves conflicted between operating procedure and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The book left me thinking and imagining what Hanssen still keeps a secret, or maybe doesn't understand himself.

Good story. Shame it was written so badly.......2006-07-18

The newspaper and television reports of Robert Hanssen -- the FBI agent who spied for the Soviets in a frightening breach of national security -- were fascinating. But this book by Lawrence Schiller is silly.

Schiller has borrowed heavily from Norman Mailer's screenplay. And this is what spoils it. In a screenplay, you have to invent dialogue for the characters, and you can get away with invented dialogue if people know it is based on a true story. But in a book that is supposed to be factual, such as this one, invented dialogue becomes a barrier to credibility if it is used frequently in private situations.

In The Author's Note at the front of the book, readers are told that neither Hanssen nor his wife could be interviewed for the book because of a plea-bargain agreement they made with the Justice Department. So how the blazes can the author give Hanssen's conversations with himself in his bathroom, private conversations with his wife, and even how Hanssen's dog behaved when Hanssen took it for a walk?

Every few pages of this book talk about things that happened in private -- in Hanssen's office, at his home, in the park. Hanssen is quoted in all these places, even though the author wasn't there, and neither was anyone else who was interviewed for the book. I found this distracting and very unbelievable. Even worse was the author's obsession with sex -- even making up details of what Hanssen allegedly thought and did when no one but Hanssen could possibly know these things.

I rated this book as two stars because I didn't find any spelling mistakes or typographical errors. But as for the believability of the dialogue and private incidents, it doesn't even rate one star.

I really know what to make of this book........2006-03-01

Certainly Robert P. Hanssen was a difficult man to understand but the main problem that I have with this book it is impossible to determine whether you are reading real facts or fiction.

After reading the book, I am not sure whether it was the excitement or the money that was the major cause.

Anyway I was hoping for a study of what Robert P. Hanssen gave away. The effect on security etc. There is little of this.

Where did the author get the dialogue? - seems to have a fixation on masturbation - was he peeping on Hanssen and watching him masturbate all over the place? Awful! This thing goes into my "unfinished books" stack.

Detailed instructions, organized by climate types........2004-08-20

This book includes several chapters which cover basic principles and then applies those principles in detail to four prototype climates. It is easily understood, but also includes sun angle calculations and shading diagrams for those who want to work out exact planting locations and plant forms. The last section of the book deals with drought tolerant and sustainable planting. It is readable, useful and well illustrated.

for the eco-minded landscaper.......1999-03-12

Ever notice how some spots in the woods are warmer or colder than others. This book shows you how you can modify one's own microclimate (to make your property more comfortable). It is organized by region, with appropriate strategies and recommended planting. It is also the most comprehensive guide to environmental landscaping (using native plants, composting, natural lawn care, xeriscaping [low water-use] etc.). I've recommended it to many of my friends and given copies as gifts.

Practical Parent Assistance.......2007-01-19

The seller was prompt in shipping in pristine condition. The book is so well-written in down-to-earth style that is very comforting. The author is very practical and encouraging to both parent & child. It is refreshing to find that what worked well for all of us grown-ups when we went through school should continue through the ages for many generations to come. Still working on implementing the strategies to "undo" problems that have spiraled but feel more calm to deal with it due to the reading of this book.

I wanted to rate this 3.5 stars

This book will probably work well for you if you are the typical parent whose kids have too many "privileges" such as their own TV, own phone, own computer, lots of social time with friends, etc. to take away and restore, which is probably why your children are having homework problems in the first place.

On the other hand, if your homework-challenged child does not have a lot in terms of things to take away, this book doesn't offer much in terms of remedies. Not every parent wishes to or can afford to give their child a computer, or a TV--or maybe the child is a voracious reader and could care less about being confined to quarters. Are you going to take away all of a child's books for failing to do homework (much of which is pointless anyway, to be honest here, and smart children know this)? Somehow I doubt it.

As to his checklists that he wants the teacher to sign off on, well, good luck. Not only do teachers have more and more admin work these days, the schools in many cases are trying to push the daily signing off nonsense onto the parents with those unnecessary student planners. Either the work is done, or it isn't. Daily check-off sheets are just an annoyance to the adults who have to deal with them.

What is most valuable about this book, is the way he explains how the responsibility for homework completion should be on the child, and that it is not your job to be teaching concepts, helping with homework and signing off on checklists.

Unfortunately, the schools have brainwashed parents into actually doing homework and projects with and for their children under the guise of "being involved" --to the point of textbooks and worksheets assigning homework telling parents to do flashcard practice, or other drill work!!

These days, you really have to stand firm when you tell the teacher (at the beginning of the school year) that you expect your child to be assigned homework that does NOT involve you (other than perhaps to purchase needed supplies or drive to the library), and that you expect your child to be graded accordingly because he/she is doing his/her own work. Yes, you are an interested parent, you go to the Open Houses and Parent Conferences, but you are firm in your resolve that school is your child's responsibility, or "job", if you'd like to think of it in those terms.

I feel this book needs to be revised somewhat (it is from the early '90s), because he does not address how bad this shoving off of responsibility from the teacher/school to the parent has become of late.

Before I read this book, I planned and spent my afternoons and evenings around my daughter's elementary school homework, keeping me from having time with the rest of my family. I spend countless hours asking her study questions, definitions, and checking her work. I hovered to make sure she "got it right". I used the Internet to brush up on concepts and topics that SHE was to be learning. Now I realize that by taking control of her homework, I was not allowing her to be responsible for it; I was sending the message that she couldn't handle the responsiblity on her own. Boy was I wrong! Now, although her grades are not perfect, they are HERS alone and she has earned them. Talk about boosting self-esteem! And I am now free to spend time with my family instead of re-learing mode, median and range! Thank you Mr. Rosemond!

Applied 10 years ago with my 2nd grader! Book is a classic........2003-05-29

I first read this book in 1992 when my daughter was in the second grade. We were caught in the terrible homework cycle many families can find themselves in. We were attempting to "help" her by doing her homework, sitting her down at the kitchen table, and basically doing the thinking for her. Almost immediately after applying the techniques outlined in this book we started making progress towards having a child that would ultimately be doing her homework, science projects and reports on her own. Whenever anyone expresses their frustration with their children and homework I recommend this book and recount the success we experienced.
