        3 out of 5 stars A pleasant drive........2005-06-19

An interesting idea: drive the U.S. coast of the Great Lakes and see what you run into. Well written overall with a few excellent vignettes. The fact is, it does start getting a tad tedious by the time you reach Lake Superior, which seems a shame. This might have been better if Blocksma had decided to go more into the history of these places or made it a more personal journal (e.g., Blocksma omits meetings with friends and family and the reader has little idea what's going on in her life at the time). In the end it's a pleasant trip, despite the bouts of rain, but would I want to reread it? Probably not.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful road trip, with adventure and painless learning........1998-01-29

Reading Fourth Coast was like taking the trip, with anticipation for every new day and experience Ms. Blocksma related. I learned a lot and eagerly anticipated each daily adventure. When the trip was over, I put down my book and cried, so sorry I was to have it end. Read it.

          Book Description

John F. Kennedy Jr. remains one of the most fascinating and controversial politicians of the 20th century. This bestselling first volume of Nigel Hamilton's biography has caused unprecedented controversy by its frankness and its overturning of myths. But whether or not family and the political establishment like it, it is the nearest we will ever get to the JFK story from JFK's own point of view. Reckless Youth is based on a wealth of hitherto unpublished material from JFK's closest surviving friends, from FBI, Navy college and National Archives records, as well as new material in JFK's own words.

          4 out of 5 stars Great Insight.......2004-10-27

Our fascination with JFK continues. Even now, there are still aspects of his life and career which remain hidden from public view.

This book relies on meticulous research and avoids speculation. It acquaints us with a brutal and psychotically competitive family, an aloof and cold mother of too many children who accomodates her husband's self-centeredness by a peculiarly Catholic form of emotional abandonment. This remove, however, strikes her own children as collateral damage from her intended assault on her husband.

A family of highly competitive people, with singular ambition. The theory is not hard to establish: the ambition is to attain mom's love (which is unattainable) and to impress dad.

The story is archetypal of American in the mid-20th century. We achieved so much because of qualities of competition, ruthlessness and self-interest. We also learned to worship glamour and celebrity. Wasn't Kennedy the best-looking president by far?

I never understood him better than after reading this book. I also believe that he was addicted to sex, and that we knew way too little about how to treat that addiction back then.

5 out of 5 stars Why we love John Kennedy.......2004-09-16

Anyone who truly loves John Kennedy (as I do) owes it to themselves to delve deeper into the formation of the character of this fabulously flawed human being. Nigel Hamilton's minutely-detailed "JFK: Reckless Youth," which recounts Kennedy's early through his first run for Congress, is one helluva place to start.

The myth of Camelot has suffered death by a thousand cuts -- shredded by the disclosure of presidential affairs, murder plots and political machinations. But while other celebrities have generated renewed interest and sympathy by openly airing dirt and scandal, the Kennedys have endlessly recycled the Camelot myth of the heroic young president slain before his time. Hamilton's book is the antidote to this pious tripe, serving up a John Kennedy fighting against (and sometimes embracing) forces that should have destroyed him. Young John Kennedy suffered from a mystery ailment that landed him in the hospital countless times. He courted disaster and scandal with a string of amours. He chose to fight the Japanese on a "plywood coffin" known as a PT boat rather than sit out the war in a safer place. He was saddled with a father whose pre-WWII appeasement policies undercut the national interest. Kennedy, from a young age, was one familiar with the knife's edge between life and death, learning to skate the blade with grace and aplomb. Hamilton exhaustively chronicles these episodes using interview material and an extraordinary trove of personal letters to and from Kennedy himself.

It's a shame that the Kennedy family blocked Hamilton's access to additional JFK material. The next volumes would no doubt have shown the moral excesses and almost suicidal risk-taking increasing as JFK grew older. While this material might have threatened the maudlin serenity of Camelot, I would have welcomed the change. Paradoxically, my love and admiration for John Kennedy did not wane as I read the incredible details of his life. Instead, I was amazed that such an extraordinary, compassionate and visionary man arose from the chaos of a life lived as a constant roll of the dice.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best JFK bio anywhere ..........2003-08-24

JFK RECKLESS YOUTH has only one drawback: It covers only the part of his life up to his election to Congress. Hamilton has promised two more volumes, but they have so far not appeared. That said, it is the only negative that can be said for this remarkable volume, for my money the best JFK bio anywhere (including the new but hardly impressive JFK: AN UNFINISHED LIFE by Robert Dallek). There isn't an aspect of Kennedy's life that goes unexplored. Hamilton, however, did not have the access to JFK's medical records that Dallek did -- therefore he probably did not realize how very serious JFK's health issues were. (Of course, he is writing about JFK's early life, when he was obviously a lot healthier than he was later.)

What is made painfully clear here is that JFK became president not because of his parents, but frankly, in spite of them. It was the force of his intellect and personality, more than his father's money, that made him who he was. Hamilton spends a lot of time in comparisons between Joe Jr. (the heir apparent) and Jack, the second son. According to him, Joe Jr. was ponderous, prejudiced, hardworking but abrasive and often nasty, and in general, simply did not attract people to him as Jack did. Jack, on the other hand, for all his natural rebelliousness (almost certainly fed by his parents' endless hectoring and marital issues), had enormous charm, warmth and endless humor. Hamilton even uncovers evidence of a surprisingly tender heart and his attempts to hide his concern for his friends with sarcasm and wit. His friends note that he constantly looked for new friendships and never lost a friend, even when the friends treated him with less than kindness and respect. He was loyal to a fault.

Hamilton does reserve tremendous ire (and who can blame him?) for JFK's parents, two of really the most awful parents it's possible to imagine. Rose was a mother who constantly went off and left her children with the help, never home even when her oldest children were babies, and was never, never affectionate or even perhaps very interested in them, due to her unending though silent opposition to her husband's abuse and philandering. While she inspected them daily for missing buttons or loose threads, she was completely uninvolved in their interests, games and problems. Their father Joe was, as Hamilton makes clear, good at only one thing: manipulating stocks in order to steal himself a fortune. Every other thing he tried, including banking, shipping, movies, politics and diplomacy, was a failure. (Joe was so unscrupulous that even during his stint as Ambassador to the Court of St. James, he had people buying stocks he had inside information about. It says something that when FDR appointed him the first chairman of the newly formed Securities and Exchange Commission, and FDR's cabinet protested vigorously, FDR's answer was, "Set a thief to catch a thief.") What made Joe rather insidious (and this only in comparison to Rose) is that if he did have a good point, it was his genuine love for his children, misguided as his childrearing experience was. Unfortunately, he taught them to win at any cost and that women were to be treated with contempt and used like tissue. But because he expressed affection and care for them, even dropping his own work schedule to appear at their schools when Rose wrote letters but never bothered to visit her sons even when Jack was deathly ill in boarding school, Joe comes off as, ironically, the much better parent. He was loving and affectionate, though his affection came with a price: That they think as he thought and do as he did, which Jack simply rebelled against.

Hamilton has to be commended for his sense of balance. While never shirking his responsibility to point out Jack's flaws, he is careful also to show from where they sprang -- the terrible, dysfunctional union of his parents and their awful sense of what raising a family meant. The children were socially isolated (partially because of his parents' desperation to enter Boston's WASP society while being Irish Catholics themselves), turning to each other for comfort and thus becoming close, but then separated when Rose decided she couldn't handle them anymore and sent them to boarding school, some as young as age eight.

There is so much in this book that has value, but what I personally appreciate the most is Hamilton's constant underlying (though silent) thesis that Jack's gifts were so many that had he been born to different parents, he still would have been remarkably successful, yet probably been a less tormented and far less complex personality. For Hamilton sees his sexual yearnings as nothing less than looking for the love he missed in his mother, yet unable to express his need for it because of her coldness during his formative years and what that coldness did to his ability to express and receive affection.

I could go on and go (actually, I have), but I do heartily recommend this. It's an absorbing read about the formation of a remarkable and pivotal personality in American history. I'd love to see the next volume -- imagine what he'd do with the marriage of Jack and Jackie? -- but must wait till he gets there. Meanwhile, this volume is a five-star, fifty-carat gem. Don't miss it.

          5 out of 5 stars One of a kind!.......2002-09-28

It is now virtually impossible to find a good biography of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Most are interested less in telling about his life, every aspect of it, than about his love life. But Nigel Hamilton returns some honor and polish, eschewing sensationalism for the sake of actually writing a book about his life.

This book recounts JFK's life until his election in Congress, beginning years before his birth with accounts of his grandparents and parents and what drove Joseph Kennedy to obsess on politics. While it includes JFK's assorted premarital affairs, there is also a great deal of complicated and in-depth information on his Navy service, his health, his political life, his family life, and the things that would affect him when he later became president of the United States.

Hamilton manages to pull more material -- only a portion of Kennedy's life -- into more pages than most Kennedy biographers could if they tried. He does this by incredibly in-depth investigation into just about everything in Kennedy's life. This approach not only gives much-needed depth to Kennedy himself, but to other people in his life. While his parents are no more sympathetic here than they ever were (meaning that they probably were as they seem), people that he interacted with (and in some cases, slept with) are given new attention. For example, his first serious lover Inga Arvad is explored in greater depth. Here she is not a promiscuous gold-digger or a clingy adulteress, but a woman who is willing to give up her love for his own good. Her Nazi sympathies and marital status are not downplayed, but her emotions and feelings are presented to the readers to make us realize what she was like.

And Hamilton's skill as a writer shows in how he is able to include all this detail and all these anecdotes without boring the readers silly. The eight-hundred-plus pages fly by like those of a book half its length, sprinkled with occasional pictures of JFK, his parents, "Inga Binga," Lem Billings, and others. These pictures are relatively few and far between, but make up for it in quality rather than quantity.

If you read one Kennedy biography, make sure that it's this one. Nigel Hamilton's "Reckless Youth" is written with style, class, and skill. Definitely worth the read.

                            Book Description

At ages nineteen and twenty-two, respectively, Jason Kingsley and Mitchell Levitz shared their innermost thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams, their lifelong friendship—and their experiences growing up with Down syndrome. Their frank discussion of what mattered most in their lives—careers, friendships, school, sex, marriage, finances, politics, and independence—earned Count Us In numerous national awards, including the EDI Award from the National Easter Seal Society. More important, their wit, intelligence, candor, and charm made a powerful and inspirational statement about the full potential of people with developmental disabilities, challenging prevailing stereotypes.

Now, thirteen years later, the authors discuss their lives since then—milestones and challenges, developments expected and unexpected—in a new afterword.

i think this book should go to individuals to learn about issues that might be dealing with. these two advocates have learned a lot and how their parents has taught them i think i definitively recommend this book to go to many libraries and bookstores so that other men can learn how to do things on their own just like any other men. i am a women and i have down syndrome to i have read this it made me realize that having down syndrome is a celebration

I read this when my son was a baby and the book was new. I couldn't relate to ANYTHING about these boys lives. As a woman, I just couldn't relate to their male view of the world. We did not share any interests either. This book might be more appreciated by an adult male relative, professional, or family friend, but I wouldn't recommend it for a teen. It is nice that these two boys with DS are so capable, but their book would be more interesting for someone that shared their viewpoint and/or interests. If you are a woman, read something more uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Count Us In by Jason Kingsley, & Mitchell Levitz.......2003-06-05

This is a book written in their own words by two young men who have Down's Syndrome. They share the ups and down's of their lives . Although my son is only nine, I found this book very helpful because it gave me some preview of things to come. Because the book was written in the boys' own words, it gives a unique picture into the minds and lives of older children with Down syndrome. It also gave some insight into familiar problems, as well as some events that were unique to these boys who authored the book. I found myself wishing that my own son had a close friend to help guide him through the ups and downs that await him in his teenage years. Then I realised that I could actively seek out peers for him to become friendly with at my local Down syndrome chapter, and maybe I could find some friends that he could become close with in a similar fashion to the authors of this book. I highly recommend this book to all parents, caregivers, teachers and other professionals who work with children who have disabliities similar to Down Syndrome, because the experiences of these boys could cover a broad spectrum of disabilities, not only Down Syndrome. So many books are written from an outsider's prespective. This book comes straight from the sourcel.

I first read this book when my son with Down Syndrome was very young. It was extremely encouraging to me to read the very complex and interesting thoughts of two adult men who have Down Syndrome. I wish all teachers would read this book. I think any parent with a child who has Down Syndrome, especially a very young one, would benefit from reading this book. I really fell in love with Jason and Mitchell.

                              Book Description

Antbirds and ovenbirds, two of the five largest families of birds found only in the Western Hemisphere, have been among Alexander Skutch's favorites for more than six decades. In this book, he draws on years of observations to describe the life cycle of these fascinating birds, which inhabit Latin America from tropical Mexico to Tierra del Fuego. Skutch covers all aspects of the birds' lives, including the various species in each family, food and foraging, daily life, voice, displays and courtship, nests and incubation, and parental care. He also recounts anecdotes from his own experiences, creating vivid pictures of antbirds foraging for the insects Skutch stirs up on walks through the rainforest and of ovenbirds repairing the observation holes that he opens in their elaborate nests. As some of tropical America's least studied birds, antbirds and ovenbirds surely merit the extensive treatment given them here by one of our most distinguished senior ornithologists. Over fifty line drawings by noted bird artist Dana Gardner make this book a delight for both armchair and field naturalists.

Anybody who has enjoyed other writings by Alexander Skutch on the subject of neotropical birds will also appreciate this book. After all, where else can you find interesting and informative writing about these two large and important families of neotropical birds? Not only is there a wealth of data concerning behavior, habitat, etc - but it is all presented in Skutch's very personal style, and intermingled with intimate anecdotes that really put you right there in the forest with that Bicolored Antbird, etc. Read this book before birding in lowland rainforest in Central or South America, and you will be rewarded with a much greater understanding of what you are witnessing. If you haven't yet, also read "A Birdwatcher's Adventures in Central America", and "A Naturalist in Costa Rica", as well as "Birds Asleep" - all by Alexander Skutch.

Maggie Righetti's sweater design book walks the timid knitter through the swamps, crags and deserts that a pattern addict must travel to design her (or his) own sweater. Clear writing, pleasant encouragement and plenty of illustrations make this a basic addition to the serious knitter's book shelf.

                                5 out of 5 stars Phenominal!.......2005-07-27

This book is amazing! I'm not even completely through the first section and I find that it's been well worth the money. Even if you never plan on designing your own sweaters this book is worth reading. The explanations of how the various factors such as body shape, 'standard' measurements and the drape of different yarn types affect the finished project will help anyone improve on the fit of even published patterns as well as improve your satisfaction with the final product.
Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2002-09-14

When I first bought this book, my knitting experience was not matured enough to appreciate the depth of the information contained in this book. To be honest, I was even dissapointed since the style of sweaters shown was not stylish, the models wearing them were not stylish commercial models. The book is full of English text and has no eye-candy photos. So it had been sitting in my bookshelf for almost one year,I even thought about selling it.

One Saturday afternoon, out of boredom, I decided to pick it up to read, laying on the bed. I could not believe that I could not discover the wisdom that the authour generously shares with us. My knitting knowleadge by then has grown to understand the authour's intention. Most of us do not have perfect bodies so that we need skills to knit to fit better. The models shown are real people with real mesurements! The sweaters are simples ones knitters tend to come back after ellaborately ornamented commercial patterns, which are often too-stylish to wear everyday.

All these knitting skills for size-manipulation were right there in her book at my hand. I looked for those informaiton here and there scattered in many other books, but most of the time I could not find them in any where. For example, how to plan bust darts by short-rowing were something I always wanted to know.

Her charting system is good model to copy. Math for knitting is well explined. If you can draw it and can do the math part of it, you can knit it. The price is very generous for the wealth of information contained. Probably, no color photos, no expensive commercial models have contributed greatly to its price. I am grad she made the book easy access to many people.

I would reccomend this book to intermidiate to advanced knitters.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for would-be designers!.......2002-04-14

I checked this book out of the library since I am fascinated with the idea of designing my own sweaters. But this book offers much, much more. It teaches the basics of color, it tells what colors work for you and why. Then there is a section on figure types. What sweater designs flatter and which do not. And the chapter does not have just the usual hour glass, pear, top heavy distinctions, there's the rectangle, the triangle, the oval, the tiffany diamond.... It is almost garanteed the you will find your body type in the list.

The first part alone is worth the price of the book but there are many other lessons to offer. As mentioned before, most of the sweater projects are not very stylish (though I did like the sweater designed to use up left over yarn) but the lessons offered are sound.

As usual for Maggie Righetti's books, the writing style is chatty and fun filled with anecdotes and nuggets of wisdom that can only come from a veteran knitter.

My only real complaint about this book is that it often refers to information found in the author's previous book Knitting in Plain English. I suggest buying both books. (You'll want the other one anyway after reading this book.)

This book is a must for any knitter who wishes to design sweaters but it is also an excellant course in dressing well and in adjusting knitting patterns. Also, it is a good look at advanced knitting techniques. This book is hours worth of knitting lessons condensed in a convenient package. Worth every penny!

                                      Book Description

Whether single or married, Men Made Easy is filled with information that is so essential, you'll wonder how you survived without it.

If you and your girlfriends have ever laughed that you need an "owner's manual" for the men in your life, Men Made Easy is as close as you'll get. Men become a little nervous when they find out how accurately this book explains why they do what they do, what they are thinking, and how to get them to respond to you in ways you've always hoped for. But if you are looking for quick, cute, and snappy ways to manipulate men, this is not the book for you. You're going to be getting much more than a quick fix or clever tricks.

You will be looking inside the private world of men, a world they have chosen not to reveal to women and you will find that men become more predictable and sometimes even transparent. You will be much smarter in how you communicate and interact with them. All your relationships with men will begin to improve, especially in the arena of love and romance.

To get more love and romance, you need to learn what is really going on with men. After interviewing hundreds of men and studying them for two years, Kara Oh is able to take you into their previously hidden world. Here is just some of what you can expect:

                                      * You will discover how to communicate your needs in new ways, ways that will make him want to do things for you (yes, even help around the house) and want to make you happy.

                                      * You will learn what it takes to get him to want to commit to you and make you his wife.

                                      * You will learn how to get that new man's attention and put him in such a spin that he won't be able to take his mind off of you.

                                      * You will have fun "playing with" your feminine grace and watching how easily men respond to the secrets that you will be using.

You know that he hides his feelings behind a defensive wall. And you beat against his chest because he won't let you in. But now you are going to be able to actually go behind that wall, find out what he is feeling, what drives him, what he's afraid of, what he won't tell you, why he needs to be successful, what love means to him, and why he wants and needs to marry. Because you are going to make him feel understood and safe for maybe the first time, you will become invaluable to him because you will now have the key to his heart and soul. You will also enjoy a new sense of empowerment that will make you feel like dancing. And even though he won't know what's happening to him, he's going to love what you're doing and realize how very special you are to him.

With a higher than 50% divorce rate and at least 80% of dating relationships failing and breaking hearts, it's obvious that there is something terribly wrong with how men and women interact and it's getting worse, not better. Communication is the key but if you are like most women, you've seen his eyes glaze over and most likely heard the phrase, "Can you just get to the point?" Obviously, you need to speak to him in new ways if you are going to see improvements in your relationship because how you have been doing it isn't working very well, is it? Finally, you will know how to speak to him so he really and truly listens to what you have to say.

You can finally take charge of your love life. You deserve to be loved, to feel empowered in your relationship and to enjoy happiness. Kara offers the tools you need to finally get what you want: ever-deepening love and respect, romance, and an enduring relationship with a man who makes you feel cherished and adored. Men Made Easy is filled to overflowing with in-depth understanding about what it takes to create the kind of relationship you want. The book is easy to understand and fun to read. And almost immediately, effortlessly, you will be using her secrets like a pro.

Some emails that have been sent to the author or to her online advice column, Ask Ms. Magic:

Dear Kara, I am soooooo happy!  It just dawned on me how much my SO has improved since I read and applied Kara's techniques (3 months or so).  He is less moody, doesn't go into those "I need my space" funks for days like he used to (now it's one evening of "I need to watch TV in the other room, ok?" and then back to cuddle time!).  He professes his love for me more often and has even said the things I've longed to hear, "you are my destiny, my goddess, you helped me to live again!"  When he said those things, I almost cried. This was two days ago and I'm still in shock and on cloud nine!  Ladies, I say, read Kara's book a few times over if you need to and live it!  My relationship has become something of my dreams that I thought would never come true.  If it can happen for me it can happen for you.  Kara, feel free to use my comments to promote your book if you'd like, I want as many women as possible to feel as good as I feel right now! I've also posted this on the Yahoo! Men Made Easy online women's support group. Mizzhoney :-)

Hello Kara, About your book...I am up to page 40 Kara, I think it is fabulous and I honor your insight, your intelligence and your inner beauty.  I am thrilled at how just reading only this far makes me feel an exceptionally beautiful woman and I thank you for reminding me how wonderful it is to be one.  I am 59 years old and have been ill for some time so I had just forgotten, but never again, for I will always have your book. Dell

Hi, Kara: You are a genius. Thanks for such a wonderful book.  This is GREAT STUFF -- and I can't wait to use it. N.C.

Dear Kara, So often in life, we look for things to be complicated so that we can take pride in subject mastery... which often leads to such incomplete understanding. Thank you for breaking past that boundary with your great book & booklets. Please send info if/when available so that I can sign up for on line support groups. Also, I want to buy 2 hard copies of your books for my sisters... I've been respectful of your good work and have not forwarded the emailed version, but really want to share your insights. Are you planning on doing any East Coast seminars in the next year? Many thanks, Maureen PS: undoubtedly, the best $12 ever spent. No lipstick, cute shirt or strapped sandal has made me feel as confident; so glad I ran into your book just before dating again.

THANK YOU KARA!!!!! This book has me mesmerized!  As Beth in the book says, most of it I already know, just not consciously, or especially how to apply it to help the relationship.  I am only half way through the book and I have come across MANY things that make me think of this friend, or that friend. Every woman should read this, and I will be telling the women I know! I have already started to think differently about myself, men, and love.... Dana G.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and valuable .......2005-11-30

I bought this book as an E-Book. I found it to be interesting, entertaining and valuable. Yes, the book is written in a fairy tale format, but that is part of its charm. Included in the book are "secrets" to which a few reviews have responded something to the effect that "everybody knows that." But the truth is that not everybody knows that. Kara explains in very simple terms what a man wants and needs in his relationship with a woman. Included at the end of the book are twelve secrets for men to help them relate to the woman in his life. Kara wrote me a note telling me that in her seminars she can tell the women that will walk out or give extremely negative reviews. We know them too, they're the man haters that write such columns as appear in the New York Times running down anything male.

3 out of 5 stars You already know this stuff.......2005-01-11

The "secrets" listed in the book aren't really secrets, but there is some good advice about being the kind of empowered, feminine woman that's happy with herself that attracts men that might be of help to some women who tend to forget their femininity or get stuck in a low self esteem rut...

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read on the subject! .......2004-10-28

This is an excellent book, though it's delivery does tend to be a bit cheesy. It took awhile to get through the "this book will teach you...", "after reading this...." "what you'll learn in this book..." etc but its well worth the wait when you get to the actual material. I've read dozens of books on men, women, relationships, marriage, etc and I highly recommend this one. Kara Oh is a very knowledgable writer and this book is easy to read and gets to the point that men are people too and deserve just as much love and respect as we (women) 'require' they give to us. This is one of my new favorite books along with two others that I highly recommend: "The 5 love languages" and the Carlson's "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff in Love". They all teach you how to recognize your own contributions to your relationships and how your attitude and actions can greatly improve your situation and make everyone feel loved, as well as how to be happier in general. The key thing people tend to forget is that it's no one else's responsibility to make you happy and it's wrong to expect that your happiness is in the hands of your partner or anyone else other than yourself.
I definitely suggest anyone interested in bettering themselves and their relationships whether you are single, dating, or married: BUY THIS BOOK!!!

3 out of 5 stars good but cheesy.......2004-05-21

The advice in this book is actually quite good but I think the way its written is a bit cheesy. It is told in a fairy tale like way its a bit like you are being spoken to like a child..
But the points the author make are really good and there is a lot of value in reading it if you are feeling a bit disillusioned with your relationship and wondering why you arent actually being nice to each other anymore! It may have had a bit more impact if the author had of used real life case stories instead of the imaginary characters. But its worth grinning and bearing the writing style because I think most of her suggestions actually work, or at least give you something to think about.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2000-05-06

Every woman should read this book! As each of the 12 secrets are revealed, you will experience a better understanding of the man in your life. I love this book because it's real and packed with truth. Kara's unique story-telling style will captivate your attention.

From the Gothic to the contemporary, glass has transformed the structural, formal, and philosophical principles of architecture. In The Glass State, Annette Fierro views the many meanings of transparency in architecture. Specifically, she analyzes the transparent monumental buildings that were built in Paris between 1981 and 1998 as part of Francois Mitterrand's program of Grands Projets. The Grands Projets provide a rare opportunity to study a finite set of buildings constructed of similar materials, in the same time period, in a specific urban landscape, and with related ideological missions.

Fierro employs a "discourse of the detail," in which the smallest architectural detail manifests the political, theoretical, and urban contexts of the building's design and construction. She examines the paradox of the most pared down architectural configurations being used to support the most complex meanings. Intrinsic to Mitterrand's glass buildings in Paris, for example, is a political concept: the metaphor of accessibility as a means of breaking open cultural institutions previously closed to the public.

In addition to the structures of the Grands Projets -- the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Grande and Petite Pyramides du Louvre, the glass greenhouses at utopian park projects at La Villette and Andre Citroën and the Bibliotheque nationale de France -- Fierro discusses the Fondation Cartier and two precedent structures, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Eiffel Tower.

Fierro's detailed exploration of the Grand Projets is spot-on, well-told and (for the most part) absent of the architectural demagoguery that so often occurs in books that explore architecture at a level beyond mere form. On occasion the author strays, or interprets differently than other scholars might, but overall her exploration is a solid effort; worthy of notice. Her quiet feud with the well-known braggart architect Stanley Tigerman is left untouched in this book. I've been told that she's adopted a strict adherence to the high road, which was a disappointment to this reader (who's seen the man at his most pompous).

This is a very candidly written and extremely moving account of war from the junior ranks point of veiw. I would recommend this and Mr Bramleys other book 'Two Sides of Hell' very highly

This book had more impact on me than any other battle account I have ever read. It's an account of a vicious fight by soldiers who had the best training but no previous experience of the reality of war. Vince Bramley later wrote a follow-up, '2 Sides of Hell' based on the experience of some of his friends, and some Argentina soldiers who fought against them. I have seen translations of both books in shops in Buenos Aires. Vince Bramley is a guy I'd like to meet.
After reading these books, war fiction books are suddenly much less interesting.

I served with the RAF in the Falklands between 1996-97. During a Sunday afternoon walk to Mt Longdon I met 2 men on electrical contract work for 4 months. One was Vince(nt Bramley) and the other Dom(inic Gray). Having briefly chatted with them they invited me to walk their battle the following Sunday. Wow! What a humbling experience. Only after the end of the walk did he tell me that he had written a (this) book. Reading it again 4 years on it still has the same impact. Vince is an honest and candid man. Having been there, you cannot underestimate the cold, the damp, the barren and harsh terrain, the unforgiving ground and unbelievably, how dark it can become with no light pollution.

The battle itself must have been horrific, let alone the TAB before hand, which in itself was a superhuman effort.

Well done Vince. You have written a frank account of something that (thankfully) most do not have to do. It is a fitting and lasting tribute to your colleagues.

I read the book as soon as it was published. I presume I was one of many hungering for the book as I knew vince bramley personally, although he himself will mostprobably not remeber me.

He was a L/CPL in the trg BN that I did my basic training in, in 1990. I had a face and a voice to go with the book! As a young soldier the book gripped and excited me, it made me fearful and thoughtful.

In hindsight the book was good for me in one way: as a soldier it opened my eyes to the extent that war was not glamourous and very dangerous indeed, through personal experience later in my service I thought back to when I bought the book and my thoughts were: "HOW TRUE".

                                      Excellent book!!
