Book Description
As our lives become more urbanized, many of us have lost the ability to name these beautiful flowers, whether in cities or countryside, in gardens or conservation areas. This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Anecdotes on historical background, medicinal or herbal uses, and common folklore breathe life into the text. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.

Extremely handy and interesting to read........1998-11-25
A great book for those who want to spend a few months covering the entire region. Though a few geographical and historical errors are there, the good tips and listings give a great start for the intrepid traveler.
An excellent broad look of E. Europe.......1998-05-04
I am stationed in Germany and therefore have the opportunity to travel frequently throughout E. Europe. For several years now I have been looking for a travel guide that offers detailed travel info as well as historical and regional information. I finally found it all in Lonely Planet's E. Europe. Although it was an older version (1995) with often outdated prices, it provided an excellent source of maps, key sights, as well as a good, country-by-country historical brief. This book was so good, in fact, that someone in Ljubljana, Slovenia, decided they needed it more than I did, forcing me to buy the latest edition. I'm looking forward to seeing this updated edition.

Enjoyable.......2000-10-19
This is generally a good book. Rosalie is very honest and sincere. Her vivid description of growing up in a warm, loving, supportive Sicilian home evokes a time when our society was simpler and kinder. Her tales about her relationship with her father, a kind, sensitive, intelligent, and hardworking man, are very touching. Those stories belie the premise of her book, as reflected in its title, that the difficulties in her life after her marriage resulted from having married into a "mafia" family. After all, her father was Joe Profaci's brother and (according to her husband Bill in his latest book) his right hand man; yet Rosalie's early life and the lives of her mother and siblings, and even her aunt and cousins, were idyllic. Rosalie cannot seem to be able to accept the simple fact that she married an egotistical, self-centered, inconsiderate bungler, whose cavalier treatment of his wife and children are very un-Sicilian traits. Rather than the Sicilian "warrior" Rosalie describes him as, Bill comes across more like a spoiled American rich kid who grew up without adequate parental supervision.

James Herriot, Move Over!.......2004-12-09
Retired veterinarian Bernard Wasserman, who once wrote a "Vet on Pets" column for the New York Herald Tribune, is a natural born story teller. This charming book about his Brooklyn practice would make an ideal gift for anyone who loves animals. I've read all of James Herriot's books, and fine as they are, I liked this one even better. Wasserman has a friendly conversational style that takes you right in and his humanity, his lively intelligence and above all, his love for animals shines on every page. From the dog who peed on Truman Capote's oriental carpet to the pets of lesser mortals, you'll meet a host of wonderful characters of many species and find yourself laughing out loud, wiping away a tear, and turning the pages eager for more.
Delightful reading for all animal lovers.......2002-01-09
The Dog Who Met The Queen & Other Stories is a collection of true stories from the life of author and veterinarian Bernard Wasserman, A.B., D.V.M. Twenty-five thoroughly engaging tales cover such veterinarian adventures as the escapade of struggling to track down and recover a feline Houdini; coping with deadbeats and hangups who never pay the bills for their animal's care or abandon the animal; the story of the scruffy little adopted dog from the pound who met the Queen of England, and more. a sometimes heartwarming, sometimes cynical, wry, and involving book, The Dog Who Met The Queen & Other Stories is highly recommended and delightful reading for all animal lovers.
Thumbs Up For The Dog Who Met The Queen!.......1999-12-14
One litmus test of a good book is when we find ourselves re-arranging our busy lives to accom- modate time to read it. I did this with The Dog Who Met The Queen! Bernard Wasserman, Veterinarian Emeritus and Storyteller, par excellence, takes us into the corridors of power, but also to the fringes of society. Whether writer or gangster, diplomat, down-trodden, or thief, we come to know what is in human hearts - the famous, infamous, and anonymous - through encounters with their pets and them. Dr. Wasserman's recollections of his lively and colorful veterinary practice in New York City brings vivdly to mind the memoires of his colleague, James Herriott. I think, though, that Wasserman is at times more comprehensive than 'the master', Herriott, for he is wont to give us some situational and professional suggestions as future help - help which sticks. I cannot too strongly recommend this gem of a book, and I heartily endorse it for all ages.

Puzzle Quilts: Simple Blocks, Complex Fabrics.......2007-08-23
A wonderful book, but a little hard to understand at times. This is a book that needs quiet time, much concentration to complete the complex fabrics to make them look like something. The illustrations are beautiful as are her fabrics. A little more complicated than I would do all of the time, but something wonderful to create for my collection of quilts.
Puzzle Quilts.......2007-03-09
I liked this book a lot. This book definitely produces blocks that look like kaleidoscopes. However, it requires a lot of time at the fabric or quilt store to get the best results. Therefore using fat quarters and scraps won't work. I also think that it is for a more experienced quilter.
Fantastic results for little effort!.......2007-03-08
This is a wonderful book with easy to use patterns to make amazing quilts! Using specific 'types' of fabrics you can create intricate looking quilts using simple shapes and methods. A definate must-have for every quilter!
Tired of pastels and 'tradional' quilts?.......2006-11-24
These quilts look incedibly complicated but are actually very easy. The fun is in arranging your fabric patterns and colours. Lots of shortcuts and tips are included. You only need to create a few simple templates and you can create endless designs.
I was tired of pastels and traditional patterns, finding them boring and predictable. These quilts allow you to use your creative skills, mixing and matching patterns, colour and shades. If you are not feeling so creative you can easily copy the designs in the book.
Puzzles.......2006-11-02
If you like to make puzzles, you have to buy this book.
Nice puzzles, nice results.

Few parents enjoy those oh-so-important talks with children about the "facts of life." The fact is, you can (and probably should!) begin the conversation as soon as a child turns 3 years old. As for the delicate wording--Linda and Richard Eyre (Teaching Your Children Values) have plenty of suggestions in their comprehensive, step-by-step guide, How to Talk to Your Child About Sex. Starting with the "Preliminary 'As Needed' Talks with Three-to-Eight Year-Olds," the Eyres arrange their chapters by age, including the "The Age Eight 'Big Talk'" and numerous chapters on talking with preteens and adolescents.
The authors also describe what's normal sexual behavior for each stage of development and how to plant the seeds of appreciation of one's body and the later respect for commitment and love. They examine how parents can stay true to their moral and spiritual values while staying connected to their teenagers' sexual reality. Parents will especially appreciate the up-to-date research, such as current statistics about adolescent fears, desires, and activity surrounding sexuality. --Gail Hudson

A Must Have For Parents of 7 yr olds and up.......2007-08-13
This is the book you have been searching for. I have a 10 year old son and a 7 year old daughter, and some would say I don't need a book about sex yet. Neither my husband nor I received the "talk" from our parents, so I felt I was in much need of some guidance.
I was very pleased with the content and tone of this book.
I couldn't put it down until I finished it.
It has something for each age group from 8 yrs to 19 yr olds.
The insights and guided conversations of how to broach the topic of sex were invaluable. Thanks to Amazon for the recommendation once I arrived to their site, and to the authors for the sharing of their experiences and knowledge. I now feel equipped and excited to answer the questions that I know my 5th Grader will soon throw at me.
Thanks for the opporunity to review this purchase.
PERFECT!.......2007-04-25
We have to say that this is the best book for "How To" we have encountered! It addresses all issues accompanied with sexual perceptions kids deal with today. Getting to the root of WHY parents need to be the 1st to talk and HOW to help children sort out the garbage that can send mixed signals about our relationship with ourselves and others. Moreover, it sends a message that you think your child is so wonderful and your love so great for them, that you will be the 1st to talk to them about it-- regardless if it is at 5, 8 or 10.
We have found 8 is NOT too early to talk about it.... If you have found this book later, then-- it isn't too late. Some of the language is a bit quirky-- but, as with most books, one must speak what comes out best for them. For us.... a "BIG HUG" was not the way to discuss SEX in all of its glory-- so we chose to use the words, "a special part of you". For us, sexual intimacy IS the most personal part of ourselves that we share. Love is the root and if parents don't have love and for themselves, each other, or their children do not feel love or understand what love means, then they will have problems dealing with sex and why it is so special. I agree that ALL children need to know from you that you are committed to your family and them as individuals. Tell them!!!
Sex is wonderful, very special and has a lot of facets that go unnoticed like: Modesty, respecting and protecting our bodies, loyalty, respect in general, and how nature plays a part in WHY sex is great, special and wonderful. The Eyre's touch on all aspects incorporated into sex, leaving out nothing.
Ultimately your timing may be different than theirs, but the concepts and delivery are good ways to get the "talk" done. Highly recommended. Don't miss reading what their children all have to say about the "big talk".
Love it.......2007-03-27
This book is great. I've bought it at least 3 times and keep lending it to my friends to never get it back. I must say it is not a book directed toward a liberal point of view, it is most definatly a more conservative parents book. If you have a hard time knowing where to start this book is great because it gives you full on conversations, everything you need to say for each stage of your kids life.
A great place to start.......2006-01-30
I thought this was a great book to help me focus my thoughts and take a positive approach with my kids on this subject. I am an Ob/Gyn and have no problem talking about the "nuts and bolts" of the subject, but what I appreciated about this book was the help it gave me in introducing the rationale for delayed gratification and how to give my kids an idea of why it is such a special thing. I agree with some reviewers about the discussions on masturbation and homosexuality being a bit intolerant (and unrealistic!) for my taste, but the authors are pretty straightforward about their values and say straight out that parents should take what resonates with them, and disregard what doesn't. I will just modify those topics for my kids, but I found the other 99% of this book very helpful.
I am so thankful for this book.......2005-05-05
I loved this book. Like another reviewer, my parents never talked with me about sex. Unlike the other viewer, however, I found this book very helpful. I was so scared to have "The Big Talk" with my children, because I had no idea what to say. When I read this book, I was able to relax about the conversation, and let things come naturally. I'm no longer scared about my children asking questions, because now I have answers.

In addition to the MANY charming and intriguing drawings by cat artist Louis Wain, Mr. Dale includes a wealth of information on his life, history as an artist, and personal struggles. Book Description
A photograph of poet Ciaran O'Driscoll taken when he was eight or nine by his father shows a radiantly smiling child, seemingly at home with his family and the world. But that photo is an anomaly; the boy's face was far more often darkened by a pensive, distant frown. The sources of O'Driscoll's adolescent melancholy--and its lingering traces in his adult life--are the subject of his evocative memoir, A Runner Among Falling Leaves.
Born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1943, Ciaran O'Driscoll grew up in a home shadowed by the bullying and abuse of his father. The violence O'Driscoll suffered at the hands of his father in his home was traumatic, but in many respects it paled in comparison to the public humiliation his father meted out to the boy at school, where he served as O'Driscoll's teacher. The dual role his father played left the child no place of refuge, no escape from the constant mental cruelty and physical pain, and the scars of that upbringing continue to haunt the author today.
In crystalline prose, O'Driscoll gives voice to the silent child in his memories, exploring the unnerving, roiling emotions of those years from the perspective of adulthood. The story moves back and forth, from the boy to the man, as O'Driscoll reconstructs his lost childhood in order to unearth the roots of the man he has become. Lyrical, affecting, and even at times darkly comic, A Runner Among Falling Leaves is an unforgettable portrait of an Irish boyhood.
Customer Reviews:
An unhappy childhood transcended.......2005-02-18
Ciaran O'Driscoll's "A Runner Among Falling Leaves" took my breath away. I suppose it was because I would have liked to write a similar book, but it would have taken so much bravery, not to mention the literary and lyrical flair which this author has in abundance. It is not easy to write a book about an unhappy childhood, dominated by a disgruntled father, in such a way that the reader is not put off, but is eager to see it through to the end. Whatever magical skills O'Driscoll possesses, this is precisely what he does. You do not come away from the book feeling sad or depressed, instead you have an abiding sense of a shared humanity. I think it has someting to do with the fact that the author is a poet, and can transform the sad details into something transcendent. This account of an Irish childhood is unforgettable, all the more so in that it is not only sad but funny, and at times I could not help but burst out laughing at how a miserable and constricted childhood was shown from a comic angle. Sadness there is too, but not a heavy burden. The ending is magnificent, I think, in its subtle shift to a new generation: the author listening to the happy banter of his own son.
