Wildflowers Across America is both a tribute to one of this country's loveliest natural resources and a strong plea for increasing the use of native plants and wildflowers in America's future landscaping. Once established, wildflowers take little maintenance and are an ecologically sound and low-cost way to make roadsides, park areas, golf-course roughs, or your own country garden grow and bloom. This book argues that we should let nature be our guide and get ourselves in rhythm with her teachings.
However, although we have built up centuries of knowledge about the best ways to grow vegetables, fruit, and garden flowers, we seem to know next to nothing about the propagation of wildflowers. To remedy this ignorance, Lady Bird Johnson decided that the time had come to begin accumulating the same kinds of broad data for natural flora that we have for the cultivated roses and tulips in our own gardens. Accordingly, in 1982, she donated $125,000 and a few of the family's acres outside Austin, Texas, to the founding of a National Wildflower Research Center, now known as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
This book is a true collaborative effort between the country's preeminent wildflower enthusiast and a prominent horticulturist who responds to her countless questions about wildflowers. Why do some thrive in some places and not in others? How do they propagate naturally? Are all of our well-loved wildflowers native to this continent or have many been introduced from other regions? In dealing with questions like these, Carlton Lees selected relevant excerpts from the journals of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century plant explorers who saw this land in its pristine beauty and recorded for Old World scientists the botanical wonders of the New World. Lees also chose to illustrate some of the most beautiful representations of America's unique flora in botanical publications of this early period.
But one of the major treats of this volume is the abundance of beautiful wildflowers shown in the wild and in their true, natural color. Lady Bird Johnson't words are beautiful. Her love of nature and the cleaning up of Washington DC and the Texas highways are good reading; I could have read for hours. The pictures bring the words to life. This book is a keeper in our library for our duration.

This book is a keeper. It's a beautiful coffee table book. It has stunning photography of wildflowers and a very nice personal account written by Lady Bird herself.

Just what you need.......2007-02-21
If you're looking forward to doing the interior trim of a craftsman or Roycroft style home this is the only book you need. It has page after page of clear shop drawings of all the trim that will need to go in every room of the house, and covers every interior trim eventuality throughout the entire house.
Crown, base, casing, chair and picture rail moldings are shown in detail. Cabinet work for kitchen, bath, dining and living rooms, beams, columns, paneling, and doors are all shown in detail with full construction and assembly drawings.
This book, a few power tools, and access to a lot of oak is all it will take to create comfortable, inviting interiors that look like they're a hundred years old. Even if you aren't finishing off a craftsman house the book is great reading to fully understand the style, and could easily be the impetus for a lot of shop projects.

We own a home built in the Craftsman era, and are currently remodeling / restoring it. I have bought several books about home rehab, Craftsman furniture, etc., and was disappointed with every one of them. Then I purchased this book. The level of detail regarding moldings, for example, is incredible. The complete set of dimensions including radius data for the cove are included. Not only are all the major variants of Craftsman design illustrated and specified, the original drawings for cabinets are shown and then separate, updated drawings that conform to modern kitchen design standards are presented. Anyone who is interested in the architectural details of the Craftsman era should own this book. It is a MUST HAVE!

The built-ins shown in this book are just what my old house needs to make it rustically "modern". I've hired a team of Amish carpenters to build them, as I don't trust my skill in that area just yet. Great book!
Great Projects.......2005-03-07
This is a great book for the craftsman wanting to actually build Mission style furniture. While designs for many pieces are not included, the concepts of design and construction can be used to make pretty much any item you can dream up. A craftsman style entertainment center? Stickley would never have dreamed of it. You can combine a few designs and he would be proud of what you conceived.
Very detailed book........2004-04-17
This book contains very good drawings of various craftsman details. Everything from front doors to various builtins. The author shows the historic details and how to recreate them with modern construction methods and materials. There are no color photos, but none are need for the type of book it is. I would love to have this author release a book on Craftsman Exteriors!!!!

I bought this book for myself and my neighbor say it and loved it so much I purchased one for him, also. If you know nothing about pruning this book will get you started.
Very Disappointed in this book.......2006-09-03
I was surprised to see everyone liked this book. I purchased this book and it was terrible so I went to my local library and rented several books on pruning. One of the books, "Pruning Made Easy" by Lewis Hills is far superior to all the others for a basic pruning book. The Ortho book talked about a subject or would mention a term that they already expected you to know. The book by Hill is basic but indepth.
Comprehensive introduction.......2006-08-30
I don't know if this book is for those who are experienced gardeners, but it was a great comprehensive introduction for this novice.
Just what I was looking for.......2002-05-28
I've been looking for a good pruning book for three years and have been disappointed with all of them. This is the first book that actually explains ALL aspects of the why and how to prune with just the right amount of technical detail. The encyclopedia section lists each tree/shrub with a picture and does something that no other book I've found does, it tells you when to prune EACH tree instead of just providing some broad generic statements like so many other books. If you need to prune anything in your yard, get this book.
The easy way to being an expert pruner!.......2001-07-16
This book explains pruning in easy to understand illustrations and pictures. It shows how to prune nearly anything and does it in a way that is easy to understand and easy to remember. Anyone can correctly prune their shrubs, vines, and trees by following this book. A good index makes it easy to find a specific plant that needs pruning.

Mandatory Reading for a Better Society.......2006-02-23
This is hands down one of the best books I have read. Not only does Geoffrey Canada explain in gritty detail the inner workings of ghetto society, he also lists solid well-thought solutions, which would enable inner city youth and residents to rise above poverty and despair. We, the people, have turned a cheek for much too long. Something really can be done. This book should be required reading for high school and college-level coursework.
Fistacuffs is better!.......2005-09-24
Dr. Canada presents an emotive argument for gun control through story and eclecticism. He makes an interesting case for the slide from Fist to Gun without ever dealing with the reason for the violence of fist and/or gun. One might argue with his conclusions though one cannot argue with his heart's concern as to the results caused by the increased violence. Overall, a good read for thought and/or argument.
I have heard the author speak.......2004-10-22
I personally have had the opportunity to hear Geoffrey Canada speak at my college twice, he an alumni of Bowdoin College. Not only is his book inspiring, he spoke to my class about joining the "losing team", and making a difference in the lives of others, like those of the South Bronx and Harlem, NY. Not only has he lived to tell, he has taken his experiences and turned them into something very positive, by developing and running the Harlem Children Zone, making a difference to those children there. The book is a great read for anybody who is an urban educator, or involved in social services.
Rivetting exploration of the roots of violence.......2003-11-06
Canada grew up poor in the South Bronx in the '50s. Violence, then, as now, was a way of life. All boys fought - life was worse for those who refused. Violence and the rituals surrounding it established the social pecking order. In the preface to his memoir Canada says, "The difference is that we never had so many guns in our inner cities."
Canada's first memory of street violence came at age 4, when his two older brothers had a jacket stolen at the playground. The boys' mother sent them right back to fetch it, promising them a beating "ten times as bad as what that little thief could do to you," if they failed.
They left the house in tears and returned triumphant, with the jacket. Their mother sat them down and told them it was a lesson in not becoming a victim. The author, her youngest, was unconvinced.
Then a neighborhood boy who habitually refused to fight was "stretched" over a car and savagely beaten by a group of boys. "The lesson was brutal and unmistakable. No matter who you fought, he could never beat you that bad."
Canada's memoir is a thoughtful, moving portrayal of social behavior in a culture of violence. A quick study, Canada learned to use posturing, attitude and negotiation as well as his fists to minimize the number and severity of violent encounters.
But he is absolutely convinced that violence is a learned response, not innate. He and the other small boys, says Canada, were aghast at the prospect of fighting. Only fear of worse violence and a life of cowering in corners spurred them to fight.
Today, says Canada, the same imperatives operate. But guns have shattered the rituaized formality of the pecking order. Toughness is no longer determined by fighting skills or "heart" but by willingness to pull the trigger.
This is the book's most chilling precept. The streets are now ruled by those whose most important attribute is a lack of compunction about killing.
Canada's own experience as a gun carrier is a perfect illustration. Home from college he found a nearby street ruled by a gang of toughs so intimidating he would take a circuitous route to avoid them. So he bought a gun. Carrying it, he found his whole personality changed.
Instead of avoiding the block or even crossing the street he would swagger through the gang, his whole attitude provoking a challenge. But back at school in bucolic Maine he saw his behavior in a different light. Appalled at how close he'd come to shooting someone, he threw away the gun.
Those who don't leave the ghetto don't have the luxury of contemplation.
Canada has devoted his life to helping poor children and reducing street violence. Today he runs a program which offers classes and recreational activities which involve the whole community. The Rheedlen Center uses public school buildings, open 17 hours a day, in an effort to provide children and families with safety.
At the end of the book, Canada offers a program for solving the problems of violence in the inner cities. Chief among them is getting handguns off the streets by using buyback programs, registration at the place of manufacture (so any gun can be traced) and registration of ammunition.
Whether the reader agrees with his solutions or not, Canada's memoir is powerful testimony of a future of little hope without major change. It is also a riveting and convincing personal history.
Child in the 'Hood.......2003-09-14
This little book is a lot of different things: a memoir of a violent childhood, a study in the psychology the urban poor, a treatise against the gun industry; and a promotion of community service centers. Collectively, these pieces make up an impassioned plea to end the insanity of violence and chaos in the inner city, to stop ignoring the fact that many of our cities' neighborhoods have death rates that qualify them as war zones. It's compelling reading, although at times it felt a little like preaching to the converted. I wish the author had focused exclusively on his childhood; for me, these parts of the book are by far the most interesting. As a teacher who works with inner-city kids, I want to know more about what it's like growing up in that environment, how it shapes your world view. The glimpses we get of the author's neighborhood in the Bronx are fascinating, the best biographical writing I've read in a long time.
The story of the author's adult involvement in violence prevention is worthy of telling, but I think it belongs in a separate book. In the context of Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun, the perspective of the adult community activist seems simplistic and almost disrespectful to the stark drama of the childhood memories; "that was the problem, here's my solution," Canada seems to imply. The easy answers he offers muffle the powerful resonance of his stories of growing up on the streets.

A lovely and unique little comic.........2005-01-07
This is a firm and welcomed break from the abundance of superhero comics saturating the market. Instead, Beland has created a gentle and romantic little work, chartering the development of his relationship with a Puerto Rican radio DJ he met at a bustop in Disneyland.
The artwork is light and likable and Beland is funny, warm, uncontainably romantic and eager to examine his own faults. While this is unlikely to revolutionise the comic genre, it is quick and likable and a complete break from whatever you may have read.
A hidden gem.......2004-05-01
Even if I wouldn't see myself in almost every page of this description of a long-distance love story, I'd be a fan of this book.
It's funny at times, then hearbreaking, then thought provoking. Both the art and the writing are highly professional, Mr. Beland is truly ready for the big times.
If you like books like Love & Rockets, Strangers in Paradise, Les Aventures Extraordinaires de Lapinot, you'll love this.
Just buy the book already, 'kay??
A beautiful, witty book.......2003-03-17
My wife and I were at this book's presentation at a library in San Juan the other day - bought it on the spot - read it the same day - IT'S GREAT!!!
California-bred Tom Beland shows us, in cartoons (a.k.a. comic book), how he met his future wife, Puerto Rican journalist Lily García (they worked togetheer from the second thru the fourth section of this book)). How they "clicked" and fell in love immediately, the doubts, the hopes and backstories of their romance... it's all here, from the moment they met "in a Magical Kingdom" (guess where that is) to the moment he first visits Puerto Rico and starts falling in love with the local culture... The book doesn't carry the story up to date, but since it is part of a series, it will come in an upcoming issue.
If you want to fall in love all over again with your spouse, read this one together. If you want to have a better understanding of Puerto Rican culture thru wit, read this one. Tom Beland's drawings and writing are sharp, lucid and funny... this book is to be read and treasured.
