Customer Reviews:
User freindly and fun to read........1999-05-27
As a New York City resident who likes to make weekend forays to interesting and beautiful places, I found this book chock full of useful road trip suggestions. Far from being a dry list of 'must see's' this book combined just the right amount of practical information (who, what, why, where, when, and how), historical background, colorful descriptions of some less than mainstream attractions and most appreciated of all, humor. This book is very user feindly and fun to read. I give it five stars.
Interesting and entertaining.......1999-05-25
This book was an enjoyable read. It's perfect to use as a reference book for looking things up while driving by in the car. More importantly, if you are planning your trip in advance you will find yourself reading through it like you would an interesting history book. Having lived in New Jersey for quite some time I was impressed with the accuracy of the information as well as the "cute" little inside comments. The author definitely visited the locations before writing about them. This is a book that will be useful to locals as well as tourists in both NJ and PA. Nicely done!
Book Description
The American Revolution was won not on the battlefields, but in the mind of George Washington. A compulsively readable narrative and extensive new history, George Washington's War illuminates how during the war's winter months the young general created a new model of leadership that would become the foundation of the new nation and the model for the American presidency.
Based on more than 1,500 original sources and written in the tradition of David McCullough's John Adams, historian Bruce Chadwick, Ph.D., dramatizes how the greatest threat to the American Revolution was not the British Army, but the infancy of the United States. During those terrible times, Washington had to create a military with soldiers who most often quit after a brief enlistment; deal with a backbiting and often uncaring Congress and the emerging states; overcome starvation, mutinies and a smallpox epidemic; and face winters so bitter that some of his men, without blankets or shoes, would freeze to death. By holding together an often despairing army and a disparate nation through creative, ingenious and often shocking methods, and by supporting democratic institutions to do so, Washington sired the republic that we know today.
Authoritative and dramatically rendered, George Washington's War is a spellbinding account of the hardships and real-life events that forged a great leader and a nation.

Absorbing reading.......2007-02-17
One of the better histories of Washington's role in the Revolutionary War. Convincingly argues that without Washington, we would very likely still be an English colony today. Absorbing read!
Disappointed............2007-02-03
The title is misleading, I assumed a book titled George Washington's War, would be a book about the his military exploits, tactics, and descriptions of the battles fought.....right? Wrong.
I should have realized that this wasn't a military/warfare book by the fact it didn't have any battle maps, actually there are no maps at all. By the 4th chapter I realized what I bought. An extremely comprehensive and detailed account on the struggles of the incredibly hard task Washington faced with everything from logistics, inflation, small pox, half naked soldiers, famines, lack of ammunition, Loyalist, greedy merchants, etc, etc....
It does start off with promise. The detailed information was fascinating about life in the military camp and showcasing Washington's incredible genius to be an administrator and his perserverance in dealing with extreme adversity. Then it falls flat.
At times I thought I was reading the same exact page word-for-word from a previous chapter. I expected him at some point to go back and describe in any detail at all, the battles of Lexington and Concord, Battle of Bunker's Hill, his retreat throughout New York, Battle Of Brandywine creek, etc, etc. But instead it is the same scenario over and over on the difficulties the soldiers faced, logistic nightmares, his numerous problems with Congress, lack of money, etc., chapter after chapter.
The author is well informed and has a great depth of knowledge, but he loses the audience with the incredible amount of repetitive details and too many people who are irrelevant to the story. This book is not for those who want any type of military narrative or details on the battles that were actually fought. They are only talked about as a passing thought. There is no build up to anything, the detailed information becomes so repetitive it is hard to finish reading.
The Fight for America's Freedom and Democracy.......2006-01-18
Every kid in high school should be REQUIRED to read this book, Our founding father went through pure hell to fight for our country, establish democracy, freedom, and break from the British tyrants. The soldiers went through starvation. Eating the bark off trees, eating their dogs-anything to stay alive. Many times the Continential Army were at the breaking point, but the steady determination of George Washington, Nathaniel Greene, and countless leaders were determine to have victory at any cost. I could not lay this book down. It is very well-written, and you feel drawn into the book as if you were a part of the action. The winter's at Valley Forge & Morristown were harsh, and the epidemic of small pox would have destroyed the army if not for General Washington's orders of quarantine.
War is Hell, but the price of freedom is not cheap!
Wasting Washington's War.......2005-06-14
There are great overviews of the American Revolution: Angel in the Whirlwind, there are great analyses of critical moments: Washington's Crossing and there are many great biographies: John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, The First American. This tries to be all three fails miserably across the board. No insights, no new news and poor editing make this a real slog.
"Serving at the pleasure of the President".......2005-05-28
This book was excellent, if for no other reason, because it showed the true bravery and heroism of not only General George Washington, but those who followed him faithfully into the very jaws of oblivion! Such men as Knox (Washington's artillery commander -- whom the famous fort is named after) and Greene followed Washington through the war and faced a terrible and bloody end if they were captured by the British. What drove these men to follow one man on a quest for such an unheard-of dream?
"George Washington's War" chronicles the reasons why George Washington was so victorious not only in winning the American Revolution, but also in getting the men around him and those in the Continental Congress to put enough faith in him and grant him enough power to get the job done! As well, it shows how these very achievements were brought, by the glorified commander-in-chief, to the position of President of the United states several years later.
If you are a fan of the Revolution, you will find this book entertaining. However, if you are interested in how our nation's most celebrated office formed, and what that office trully stands for and is intended for, this book will be both entertaining and enlightening. Indeed, it made me yearn for politicians who thought the way this brilliant man did!

Driven To Write This Book Is More Like It.......2004-08-02
I could have written this book. It contains nothing more than what was already in Texas Monthly, the local news, and Dateline. Mr. Linedecker threw this together in a hurry and it's not worth your time or money.
Oh Lord, Won't You Buy Me a Mercedes-Benz..........2003-08-24
Ok, I admit it: I cheat my diet now and then with a nutritious Krispy Kreme donut, & sometimes I read the ever erudite Enquirer - what else to do when stranded in a slow-moving check-out line? Cliff Linedecker, Best-Selling Author in his own write, has teamed with National Enquirer staffers in several recent rush-to-print-while-the-story's-still-hot "true crime" books. And the results are, amazingly, pretty good.
This book goes beyond the quickie sound bites and sensationalistic snippets I saw on TV. (Alas, I must toil every day to earn my Daily Bread and so, to my chagrin, cannot lie about the house all day watching Court TV and eating bon-bons.) It is the saga of the dynamic duo of Clara and David Harris cum Texas triage with the infiltration of trollop Gail Bridges. The cover aptly features the "murder weapon," a 4,000 pound Mercedes and embossed tires tracks all around. There are many "Wow! I didn't know that!" moments. Clara was a Columbian dentist. That Texas law regarding justifiable homicide if catching one's wife in flagrante delicto was not as sexist as Urban Legend had it.
While reading this book, just remember the tabloid from which it sprang: an entertaining diversion, a guilty pleasure about as substantial and nutritious as a Krispy Kreme, and devour them both. Reviewed by TundraVision, Amazon reviewer

If all craft books were as attractive, brilliantly conceived, and downright amusing as this one, the craft world would be a better place. Glorious projects, beautiful photos, thorough instructions, and terrific coverage of all the groundwork make for lovely viewing, enjoyable reading, and endless inspiration.
Master decoupeur Durwin Rice is not only a true artist with scissors and glue, he's a lively writer whose sense of humor and deft handling of the subject makes even the most mundane tasks (like surface preparation or sealing a finished piece) sound like fun. He debunks the obsessiveness with which "Old Decoupage" was created and which still puts off some would-be decoupeurs today, such as the tendency to apply 30 or more coats of sealant ("You want to protect your work from scratches--not Hurricane Andrew") or the inclination for fanatical cutting ("You are master of the image, not the image of you"). He covers all manner and size of objects with his wondrous creations: plates, vases, trays, eggs, tables, cabinets, walls, ceilings, even the refrigerator. Clearly this is a man obsessed, not with the needlessly labor-intensive approach of yesteryear, but with the urge to decoupage the world. This is not only a lesson on how to create spectacular decoupage; it's a lesson on how to produce a masterful craft book. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Today's decoupage is not your grandmother's decoupage: delicate Victorian or floral images on dainty plates buried under innumerable coats of heavy varnish. Contemporary decoupage works are made with flea market finds, cherished letters or photos, magazine clippings, handmade papers, unique prints, or any other image that strikes the artist's fancy, then it's applied to trays, tables, lamps, walls, floors, furniture, or even ceilings. In
New Decoupage, author Durwin Rice takes a fresh look at this traditional craft, demonstrating how to creatively transform your environment using just a few simple materials. He offers complete instructions for more than 18 unique
projects, ranging from a delicate vase resembling fine porcelain to a dining room table adorned with generations of family photos, from an entire row of kitchen cabinets featuring pictures of your favorite chefs to a stylish faux marble coffee table.
Beginning with a brief history of the art, Rice moves on to detail the fundamental techniques of modern decoupage, showing you how to clean and prepare various surfaces, select and cut images, and choose the right adhesive for a specific project. Two simple gluing lessons demonstrate the basic skills needed to complete any decoupage project. The next section offers instructions for smaller decoupage projects, such as an elegant cachepot filled with exquisite decoupaged eggs, a serving tray adorned with favorite images, or a six-sided wooden block puzzle decorated on all sides. Finally, Rice provides ideas and inspiration for larger decoupage projects, remaking plain furniture, mundane appliances, and even whole rooms into beautiful works of art. Lavishly illustrated with nearly 200 full-color photographs,
New Decoupage brings the art of decoupage into the present day.

5 *.......2007-05-13
The book is the best, simple writing, a lot of ideas...
If you read this book you'll be 100% infected with decoupage ;))
A helpful and humorous guide to beginning decoupage.......2007-03-14
I've bought a few other decoupage books in the past. Most skimp on the details of how to actually do it and instead fill their pages with unattractive images you can cut out and use if you're desperate. Mr. Rice's approach is different. He mixes humor with instruction in such a way that he makes even a fairly detailed discussion about adhesives spell-binding. Adhesives are important in decoupage, of course, but sometimes it's challenging to read about glue. Not so in this book!
The full-color images of Mr. Rice's work and the work of the people in his studio are stunning and inspiring. Some of the projects he claims are easy certainly don't seem that way, but it does give you something to aim for and, more importantly, can inspire you to come up with ideas of your own.
The first section of this book discusses the basics of decoupage - how to do it, on what to do it, and why you should do it. The chapters are divided well and it's simple to flip through and find the reference page you need. The second part of the book contains project ideas with step by step instructions. The best part is that there are also photographs numbered along with the steps. It's very helpful when you're trying to figure out what to do. My only complaint is that the font size is a bit small in this section. The final section of the book is a bit more whimsy, a kind of photo collection of wild and sometimes surprising uses for decoupage that shows you the possibilities of this craft are practically limitless.
If you're looking to get into the hobby of decoupage, this is the book you should grab up first. It's exciting, funny, informative, organized, inspiring, and great to look at.
For personal use only.......2006-03-17
Mr. Rice does a pretty good job describing technique. For those of you who are looking for a hobby and a way to wow the relatives with homemade Christmas gifts - this is a good book for you.
If you are thinking of possibly selling your crafts, beware that Mr. Rice neglects to mention any copyright considerations. In fact, one of the examples pictured in his book has Disney's Prince Charming prominently displayed. I'm sure Mr. Rice has obtained all the pertinent licenses to use Disney imagery and the variety of other artistic imagery he employs; it would have been nice, however, if he would have spent a paragraph discussing the ramifications of copyright infringement for his readers to whom these issues may not occur.
Like having a personal instructor!.......2004-12-31
The next best thing to having someone by your side teaching you the art of decoupage is Mr. Rice's book. It's highly illustrated & the step-by-step directions on how to decoupage glass and other objects are excellent. He leaves no stone unturned and even points out a mistake in a decoupaged table, making me feel that I'm not the only one making errors. Mr. Rice is funny, creative, and I'd like to see instructions on making purses.
Cuts to the chase!.......2004-05-30
I purchased Leslie Linsley's Decoupage, Design, Create, Display and Durwin Rice's New Decoupage at the same time and received Leslie's book first. I was somewhat put off by her style. . .too foo foo for me. Her book was more like an art book showcasing her travels to other countries. Yawn.
Durwin's book gets to the point and says it like it is. All of his techniques work! The suggestion to "relax" the image before applying is awesome!
His humorous approach will have you in stitches. If you want a no-nonsense step-by-step approach to decoupage without the fluff then buy this book first!

Getting Started With Decoupage-My Experience.......2000-08-14

I found this book both interesting and easy to follow, explaining the basics in a friendly manner, and then as I built up my confidence (and my pictures!) it explained more techniques to give each picture a look which is impossible to ignore. All in all, this book is a treasure and I recomend it to any beginners.

Lots of variety!.......2003-09-07
An incredible number of activities included here - pictures are beautiful. Its a larger book than I expected - must be 10"x7". Gosh, I barely know where to start - every two-page spread is another paper craft - bookmarks, origami, box making, lampshade decoration, stationary, paper mache and decoupage galore. Each activity is shown in picture steps and text. Much fun to be had.
Good, all encompassing.......2000-12-12
I have many craft books, but this one really does cover so many types and styles of paper craft that it's a basic must-have for anyone who 'crafts' at all. I use the projects and techniques in this book in all of my other hobbies.

Well done but a little tacky...........2001-12-02
Craft School is a very attractive book - clear instructions and great photos. If you are a beginning crafter, this gives you a nice introduction to many different mediums. However, some of the projects were rather cheesy and juvenile - so, I am choosing to take the instructions and apply them to projects that I think are way cooler.

With an epidemic of obesity and heart disease and diabetes on the rise, Americans need simple, compelling strategies for getting in shape more than ever. This practical guide answers that need with advice from four experts: Mr. Universe Bill Pearl (weight training); Stretching author Bob Anderson (stretching); Olympic cyclist Ed Burke (aerobic exercise); and Olympic runner Jeff Galoway (how to run off fat). Part One features 32 exercise programs of stretching, lifting, and moving, customizable for readers’ health considerations, schedule, and level of commitment. It also covers injuries and other health problems. Part Two discusses healthy eating, exercise during pregnancy, and ergonomics, and gives advice about choosing a gym. This edition includes new information on beginning running, and how to lose weight by running, by Jeff Galloway. In addition to the programs, 100 pages of the book are devoted to teaching basic information about the body, how it works, healthy eating, and how exercise benefits health.

Just what I needed.......2007-10-15
This is a gem, both basic and comprehensive, with clear illustrations. Step by step, day by day, week by week. I have been struggling for some time with working into reasonable shape to try to protect my heart from further problems, but aerobic exercise alone has not been enough. This is a trainer in a book, and I can use it at my own pace because it's VERY useable. You can easily copy a page a week out and carry it with you. I took it out of the library first to check it out and was hooked.

Bob Anderson is the author of Stretching, a flexibility handbook that has sold in the millions. Bill Pearl, a bodybuilding legend, is coauthor of Getting Stronger, which is considered by many to be the most important book ever on weight training. Ed Burke, coauthor of Fitness Cycling, is a bicyclist and researcher who helped American cyclists catch up to their European counterparts in the Olympics and other international competitions. Getting in Shape combines their three areas of expertise into basic and advanced programs for anyone who wants to look and feel better. The book also contains simple, straightforward and useful chapters about diet, health, and the ways the body works (and doesn't work).

Missing Pages.......2006-07-06
I just received this book from Amazon and was greatly dismayed to find that pages 119 - 150 are missing, and pages 89 - 118 are repeated in their place. That's like Ford shipping a car with the engine installed in the trunk - what a basic mistake! Now I have to go through the effort to return the book and wait 7 - 10 days for a refund after they get it back!
Humble, practical and result oriented .......2006-02-10
In 1996 after I went to US from India, within a year, I was overweight and then the fitness blues started. I went thru several cycles of extreme exercising, dieting, pain and give-up. During the same time I wanted to find a no-nonsense fitness literature. One of the criterias of my search was to avoid the books boasting photographs of ideal bodies. When I saw this book, I trusted my instinct and bought it. For four months I followed the programs (from this book) from "program before program" to "basic program 2" and reduced several kilos. During this time, I did not clearly follow very important advise from the book about increasing the training progressively. I had to give up because I was doing too much after getting encouraged by initial results.
It is 2006 now. Almost 10 years are over and the book itself stayed with me all these years. At the back of my mind a dream stayed to complete first 5 basic programs from this book. The authors claim that after completing the fifth basic program, a person will be physically fit as per the American College of Sports Medicine's guidelines for an healthy adult.
From Feb-2005, I started following programs from this book again (from the beginning). I was then 82 kilos. I had promised myself to write an amazon review of the book after losing 10 kilos. Now after one year I have lost 12 kilos. In November, after completing "the basic program 5" and after getting in good shape I took up serious running as a sport/hobby. Recently from Amazon, I bought a copy of this book as a gift to a friend.
If followed methodically by listening to all the advise by the authors, this literature has capacity to build a foundation for serious athletic capability in a person. The programs are designed with purpose of letting you focus on performance (training) without letting you worry about what next. Every exercise is explained in easy to understand words with crisp clear illustrations. The illustrations and explanations are precise and it is strongly advisable to follow them correctly for best results.
As I started losing kilo after kilo, I developed interest in nutrition, general fitness and subsequently invested into other related resources. Everything is paying off now. I have told myself to continue the training as I have realized that fitness is always a journey and not a destination.
From last November, I started preparing for marathon and have already run couple of road races with lesser distances. These days, I feel euphoric when I hit the road or when I go to the gym and follow the last set of programs named 'fine tuning' from this book. While following the book, I have also developed great respect for the authors.
In my opinion, the front page (cover) of the last edition was better than the latest edition. The front page of the last edition has coloured illustrations by Jean Anderson who also made the illustrations for the entire book.
A Good Start!.......2005-03-06
Whether you are a couch potato or ex-jock, Getting in Shape presents a straightfoward, descriptive, illustrated guide to fighting the battle of the bulge.
Filled with nearly three dozen workouts, the authors competently provide a considerable amount of information in a concise, 200+ page format. Drawings help take the guesswork out of how to stretch and lift weights properly. Health related topics including diet, exercise and anatomy are easy to read and informative.
My only real knock against the book is that its binding is the standard paperback type. I'd prefer a spiral-bound book that can be layed open without weighing down the ends. I have found it helpful to open the book to the particular workout I'm doing to help me keep track of the stretches and exercises. Granted, this is a minor gripe, but I'd buy another copy of it if they had a better binding.
I would encourage anyone who is looking to improve her/his health to give Getting in Shape a look! Best wishes for a long and healthy future! Don't give up!
Great information for beginners!.......2004-01-08
If you are a beginner or someone returning to fitness after a long absence, this is a great book that really does a good job of emphasizing the importance of doing anything other than sit around. If you are someone who is familiar with working out or who is already fairly healthy this may provide you with some few hints, but I would stick with Getting Stronger for the strength training and Stretching for flexibility. I'm a half-way in shape 35 year old that exercises somewhat regularly and this book was just a little too rudimentary for me. I was looking for more involvement with the Lifelong Fitness portion of the title, but found it to be more towards getting people started.
Lots of specifics, not much background.......2003-09-19
Lots of specific workouts, and specific topics like advice for pregnant women, those with arthritis, etc. Very little background or general topics, like how many reps is best, etc. It felt constraining. Also, virtually nothing on weight machines - the workouts use free weights only.

Book Description
Focusing on the last quarter of the nineteenth century, The Wilde Years features Oscar Wilde as a central, catalytic figure linking two artistic capitals, London and Paris. Wilde is presented as a multi-faceted artist, whose major achievement was language, with which he contributed to the development of artistic and cultural movements of his age. In his lifetime, Wilde was praised as a poet, writer, and, in particular, playwright, but this publication throws new light on his lesser-known work as an art critic, journalist and progressive political thinker. The book is a tribute to the man who, in his own words, 'stood in symbolic relations to the art and culture of my age.'
Celebrated for his wit and flamboyant personality, Oscar Wilde was a central figure in the artistic worlds of fin-de-siecle London and Paris. He was a poet, playwright, art critic and, above all, he was known as a virtuoso 'conversationalist.' Furthermore, the extremity of his fate - imprisonment following his trials in 1895 for homosexual activities - made his name unforgettable as a 'martyr' of the time.
