    Book Description

A guidebook of 12 walking & driving tours that highlights historical facts and architecture in the city of Pittsburgh.

Seeing Pittsburgh interprets Pittsburgh not as a mere collection of buildings, but as the result of human will, imagination, idealism, and, at times, foolishness. It will enchant visitors, take natives to places they've never been, and offer a fresh perspective on a great American city.

Pittsburgh invites walking far more than most American citites, and Fifield has organized the downtown itineraries into walking tours. For the others, you will need a car--at least for long stretches--but sections of each tour can be walked. The driving portion of the itineraries is easier to follow if the drive has a navigator or has plotted the route ahead of time. Neighborhood maps are included here, but a current city street map is an essential tool. Most of the tours can be completed in one morning or afternoon outing.

Talks nicely about architecture and scultures around the city and downtown. Takes you on a series of walking tours that include some of my favorite eclectic things in the city. Has a cosmopolitan perspective. I learned a lot reading Fifield.

            Book Description

During World War I, fear that a network of German spies was operating on American soil justified the rapid growth of federal intelligence agencies. When that threat proved illusory, these agencies, staffed heavily by corporate managers and anti-union private detectives, targeted antiwar and radical labor groups, particularly the Socialist party and the Industrial Workers of the World.
Seeing Reds, based largely on case files from the Bureau of Investigation, Military Intelligence Division, and Office of Naval Intelligence, describes this formative period of federal domestic spying in the Pittsburgh region. McCormick traces the activities of L. M. Wendell, a Bureau of Investigation “special employee” who infiltrated the IWW’s Pittsburgh recruiting branch and the inner circle of anarchist agitator and lawyer Jacob Margolis. Wendell and other Pittsbugh based agents spied on radical organizations from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Camp Lee, Virginia, intervened in the steel and coal strikes of 1919, and carried out the Palmer raids aimed at mass deportation of members of the Union of Russian Workers and the New Communist Party.
McCormick’s detailed history uses extensive research to add to our understanding of the security state, cold war ideology, labor and immigration history, and the rise of the authoritarian American Left, as well as the career paths of figures as diverse as J. Edgar Hoover and William Z. Foster.

In Star-Spangled Men, presidential biographer Nathan Miller compiles a subjective list of the 10 crummiest presidents in history. His criteria for ignominy: "bad character, the inability to compromise, a lack of vision, poor political skills, dishonesty, and an inability to communicate." Richard Nixon and Andrew Johnson are obvious choices, Jimmy Carter and William Howard Taft somewhat less so, though probably deserving according to Miller. Many readers probably can find a selection or two to quarrel with on these pages (Is Calvin Coolidge really one of the 10 worst?), but nonetheless will appreciate Miller's candid assessments. (The most controversial part of the book is certainly its brief epilogue, which details "the two most overrated presidents": Thomas Jefferson and John F. Kennedy.) Miller provides 10 neat summaries of 10 arguable failures in this good bit of opinionated writing that turns the klieg lights on some of American history's dimmer stars.

            Book Description

Picking America's best presidents is easy. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin D. Roosevelt usually lead the list, But choosing the nation's worst presidents requires more thought. In Star-Spangled Men, respected presidential biographer Nathan Miller puts on display those leaders who were abject failures as chief executive. With pointed humor and a deft hand, he presents a rogues' gallery of the men who dropped the presidential ball, and sometimes their pants as well.

Miller includes Richard M. Nixon, who was forced to resign to escape impeachment; Jimmy Carter, who proved that the White House is not the place for on-the-job training; and Warren G. Harding, who gave "being in the closet" new meaning as he carried on extramarital interludes in one near the Oval Office. This current edition also includes a new assessment of Bill Clinton -- who has admitted lying to his family, his aides, his cabinet, and the American people.

1 out of 5 stars This guy doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground.......2007-04-10

Who is this Nathan Miller to bedevil the reputations of past leaders because they were fat, like he does with Taft,or unsocial, like Ben Harrison,or because they were products of thier time, like Kennedy, jackson,or even a saint like Jimmy Carter?I would think that LEADERSHIP,or the lack thereof, would be the single criteria by which to judge a president, but apparently a doofus like Miller is more interested in making fun of personality traits than in giving any real thought to the achievements,or mistakes of our presidents...Don't buy this book under any circumstance, unless you are one of those worms who enjoy making fun of people based on size,or personality quirk, rather than seeking any understanding as to why these men were either great or mediocore...

3 out of 5 stars An Average Overview.......2006-06-14

(original version posted May 8, 2000)
While the title does offer a warning that this might be a "fluffy," sensationalistic, or overly cynical offering, it's fortunately none of these things.

Unfortunately, that doesn't imply there's a lot of depth to this work. Miller does a competent job of picking ten of our less distinguished Presidents and compiling a lot of well-documented facts about their respective administrations. The book does a satisfactory job of telling us why someone is on his ten worst list. But the facts pretty much do this for us already without the need for much synthesis or supporting argument. In fact, it's hard to argue with any of his choices...with one exception.

I did find Miller's choice for the absolute worst President rather surprising and far too critical considering this President's skills and accomplishments (although I should note that I'm not a big fan of the 37th President). While I understand Miller's point, I really needed some more support for his argument.

Short on interesting arguments, viewpoints, or in-depth analysis, this book could still make for a nice quick read if you're looking for an overview. One last thing... if you're wondering if Miller may have forgotten any of our recent Chief Executives, note that the book was written before 2001.

4 out of 5 stars Rounding up the usual suspects, but interesting.......2005-08-18

Handicapping best and worst Presidents is a popular pastime for the politically inclined and even Presidents sometimes take turns critiquing our Chief Executives. Nathan Miller, best known for his biographies on Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt, takes his turn here critiquing our ten worst Presidents and there are few surprises to be found here. Miller singles out the usual suspects (Pierce, Buchanan, Johnson, Grant, Harrison, Taft, Harding), but adds a few surprises (Coolidge, Nixon, Carter). Miller addresses each in a chapter making the case against them repeating stories that have been told ad nauseum. Miller adds little that is fresh, insightful or new here and very little in the way of objectivity as Miller focuses on their individual personalities, relationships and temperaments more than actual achievements and failures. Even Harry Truman picked out most of these Presidents as duds in his autobiography and they're regularly on most everyone's list. Miller saves his worst invective for the very end when he lists his two picks for the most overrated Presidents, John F. Kennedy and Thomas Jefferson, which seem gratuitous, especially in Jefferson's case in light of the wonderful "American Sphinx" by Joseph Ellis.

There's little here that reflects great creativity or ingenuity. I'd almost prefer to see someone write a counterpoint highlighting the accomplishments and achievements of these Chief Executives just to refute what was laid out here. In the end this book reads like something I've read before; a good gossipy read that doesn't break new ground. Miller is an excellent writer as demonstrated with his other books and his writing here is lively and engaging. I just find it hard to single out Coolidge and Carter when you have other ample targets like Madison, Fillmore, Tyler, Van Buren, and others.

4 out of 5 stars Too Hard on Grant.......2005-07-20

This was an exceptionally well written and interesting book. Miller has a genuine knack for writing, as would be expected of someone who is a journalist. He also has a beautiful way of synthesizing historical events related to the presidents under discussion. It's an immensely enjoyable read. Miller explains that his choices for the ten worst presidents are subjective--of course they are. In my opinion, the list of ten is an very good one--with one or perhaps two exceptions. He is very hard on Grant, whose presidency has been rehabilitated by historians in recent years. Miller takes the old-fashioned view of the Grant administration, hammering away on the scandals, which were rightly bad. But Grant did much good for the country, and, contrary to Miller's claims, Grant actually enforced the rights of African Americans against public opinion. He used force when necessary to protect their rights. His administration included more quality men than just Hamilton Fish. Miller also impugns Grant's generalship--another an old-fashioned view. Grant was not just a "butcher" and even if all he had against the confederates was overwhelming force, yet still he was able to use this to win, while many other union generals still faltered with the same overwhelming odds. Finally, Miller is a bit too hard on Coolidge. While doing nothing may be bad from a liberal or Democrat's point of view, Coolidge represented the last president before the era of big government began (yes, government started this track even under Hoover). While unimaginative and provincial, Coolidge believed, as even Jefferson did and as many people still do, that government should not be too large or intrusive. We now have an enormous military industrial complex welfare state that feeds off of 40 to 50% of our nation's income every year. You may approve of that, but Coolidge represented a different era. As a matter of fact, the Great Depression only became "great" because of the Smoot Hawley Tariff and the Federal Reserve raising interest rates. Please, please, don't blame Coolidge for what other presidents or government agencies did. He's also a bit hard on Kennedy. But still an excellent and thought-provoking book.

            2 out of 5 stars Shallow Work.......2004-04-11

Considering the depth of Miller's larger works of individual biographies, this book disappoints. Miller skims lightly over each of these "worst" presidential lives, presenting only the facts and opinions which support his premise. Better, more thoughtful analysis is available from many sources. In particular, readers might try Robert Gilbert's "The Mortal Presidency" (Harper Collins, 1992) for more human treatment of Calvin Coolidge's deep depression, and Maxim Armbruster's "The Presidents of the United States" (Horizon, 1960) -- arguably the best collection of essays written on the presidents -- for a more objective view of Andrew Johnson's character qualities.

                  Book Description

This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it." Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

5 out of 5 stars A must for parents and educators.......2007-01-20

As a Psychotherapist and campaigner for the rights of children I would recommend this book as a compulsory text for any course on child care, therapy or education.
It is gripping, moving, shocking and eye-opening. It is particularly relevant to understand the capacity of disturbed parents to hide and disguise their cruelty and the mind confusing, emotionally scarring dilemmas faced by the abused child.
And yet it is hopeful and heart warming.

I am a special education teacher at a residential treatment facility that works with children in similar situations. As an end of the year project, I read this story to my 16-18 year old high school girls. They wouldn't let me put it down. The emotions, empathy, and similar situations my girls experienced were finally put into words. David, to them, is a survivor and has given them hope for their own future! Thank you Mr. Pelzer for sharing your story and helping my girls know that they are not the only ones!

This book was about a boy named David who went through a rough time when he was younger. He would get abused by his mother and his dad was an alcholic. The boy had no right and no say in that house hold his younger brothers had more say then he did. he would get tortured everyday and his mother would make him stay and live in the basement with nothing. Later in the book he finally gets rescued and is put into a shelter home. His life isnt how it use to be anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Courage amidst incredible abuse.......2004-06-03

As I read this, parts of the text were unbearable. Yet, Dave's story is an unfortunate reality of the deviance that exists within the human psyche to control, manipulate and abuse another. Anyone involved with educating children in whatever form they chose should read this because the truth brings to light what is hidden in the darkness. Dave is definitely an overcomer and his book will challenge you to look at the little boys and girls we see each day...a bit more carefully and mercifully.

I grew up in Philadelphia, and have fond childhood memories of visiting "America's First Zoo," which is the subject of this book. Although some animal rights people are against zoos of any kind, the fact is, today's zoos do a great deal to help save endangered species through various breeding programs. In some cases, such as the Pere David deer from China, the zoos have literally rescued species from extinction (see p. 218). The author of this book does an excellent job of balancing biology with human interest stories, as he takes you behind the scenes and shares "animal gossip" about some of the zoo's most popular exhibits. "The Peaceable Kingdom" follows a year's worth of zoo activities through the four seasons, and is simply cram-packed with zoology, history, geography, and odd facts about animals. (Did you know that a male rhino has a two-foot long erection?) Absolutely a fascinating read!

When I see a caption for an illustration that reads something like "Experience personal customer design consultations in the tradition of the old mantel masters, Wohners' one-on-one sessions ensure the highest quality of your mantel design and selection," I can't help but wonder at the purpose of the book as a whole. I did find the section on the Rumford Fireplace interesting, and the mantels shown intriguing, but as for actual designs that I could build I found the book lacking. In fact many of the designs in the "Mantels Portfolio" reminded me a great deal of the "mantel" which was on the fireplace of my first residence --- a mobile home.

I did give it 3 stars for the ideas, but practical information given is minimal.

I recently bought a house in need of renovations. Since hiring contractors are both expensive and often unreliable, I decided to tackle much of the work myself. This included designing and building my fireplace mantel. A previous owner had removed the mantel so there was no indication of what style it was built in. I searced for books on fireplace mantels and found this one. It has a complete detailed chapter on how to build a classic fireplace mantel, step-by-step, with detailed photos using materials I was able to easily purchase at Home Depot. The results were phenominal! I have since had family and friends ask if I would build them a mantel. I almost hate to reveal how easy it was when they are willing to pay a nice sum of money for something that took me the weekend and little cash. I highly recommend this book!

                    Book Description

The Japanese garden is held in great esteem throughout the world, but it succeeds by blending opposites - an energy of line and material worked with great restraint; nature expressed in the driving force of a waterfall or in pebbles swept into patterns around a boulder. Both concentrate on
nature in its own right, and invite the visitor to find refreshment in the atmosphere of quiet beauty.

Japan's noted garden photographer, Haruzo Ohashi, here demonstrates his knowledge of and sensitivity to this subject, and Japanese Gardens of the Modern Era, is an appropriate sequel to the classic landscapes of Japanese Garden. Here the time span is from the end of the Edo Period to present-day
Showa. Some gardens are shown in seasonal variety, but all combine energy and serenity, the contrasts and harmonies of the design principles.

The author Asako Muroo writes the foreword to this book, and the appendix gives information on the gardens, as well as photographic details. The book is an invaluable reference for gardener and photographer alike.

In the tradition of Bastard Out of Carolina and Angela's Ashes, Change Me into Zeus's Daughter chronicles a child's coming of age in an abusive and dirt-poor environment. With the gripping narrative drive of both of those bestselling books, Barbara Robinette Moss's candid yet lyrical account takes hold of our hearts and doesn't let go until the final page. Her story juxtaposes heart-rending adversity with the playful chaos of eight siblings growing up in the 1960s South, with its creeping kudzu and soybean fields, its forthright and sometimes peculiar inhabitants, and its boiling racial tensions.

The hardships related here are both familiar and unique: the Christmas presents exchanged for drink money, the failed businesses, the decrepit shacks that served as temporary homes, the disturbing early-morning discipline. Under the tyrannical rule of a father who "inflicted pain recreationally, both physical and emotional," the only bright spot in Moss's childhood was her mother, Dorris. Slavishly devoted to her husband ("she seemed to crave him as much as he craved alcohol"), Dorris held the family together by absorbing most of the abuse. But in the end she lacked the courage to leave him, and her children had to act as their own protectors. As if poverty and her father's mistreatment weren't enough of a burden, Moss also had to contend with a face disfigured by malnutrition. As a result, she sought refuge in whatever elusive beauty she could find: the poetry her mother taught as a substitute for material things; the fertile, red Alabama soil; the love of her baby sister Janet. Her urge to create beauty and her longing to embody it culminate in surgery that transforms her face but brings with it a crisis of identity.

In her outpouring of memories, Moss occasionally gets lost in her tale, embedding flashback within flashback. More problematic is the portrayal of her father: he's relentlessly cruel until a near-fatal beating, after which he begins to briefly connect with his children. For us, it's too late, and we can only react to his death with a sigh of relief. But these minor quibbles are just that. Moss's extraordinary memoir enthralls us from its alarming introduction--in which Dorris feeds her starving children a meal of potentially poisonous seeds--to its poignant conclusion. --Lisa Costantino

                          Book Description

Change Me into Zeus's Daughter is a haunting and ultimately triumphant memoir about growing up poor and undaunted in the South. With an unflinching voice, Barbara Robinette Moss chronicles her family's chaotic, impoverished survival in the red-clay hills of Alabama. A wild-eyed, alcoholic father and a humble, heroic mother along with a shanty full of rambunctious brothers and sisters fill her life to the brim with stories that are gripping, tender, and funny.

Moss's early fascination with art coincides with her desire to transform her "twisted mummy face," which grew askew due to malnutrition and lack of medical care. Gazing at the stars on a clear Alabama night, she wishes to be the "goddess of beauty, much-loved daughter of Zeus." Against all odds, the image of herself surfaces at last as she learns to believe in the beauty she brings forth from inside.

Barbara Robinette Moss burst onto the scene four years ago with an unforgettable autobiographical piece called "Near the Center of the Earth". That essay, a powerful, poetic account of Moss's poverty-stricken childhood and her artistic mother's desperate measures to provide enough food for her eight children, won the Gold Medal for Personal Essay from the prestigious William Faulkner Creative Writing Competition and immediately brought Moss to the attention of writers and critics everywhere. Now, with the long-awaited Change Me into Zeus's Daughter -- a poignant and wholly compelling memoir that grew out of the author's original essay -- Moss has not only made good on her initial promise, she has achieved a rare and abiding triumph of artistry and spririt. Woven from humor, grief, love, and regret, Moss's memoir is the haunting story of a difficult and keenly felt life: plagued by her family's poverty, her father's alcoholic abuse, and her painful awareness of her own malformed face, she is rescued by a life-giving appreciation for literature and art, and a driving determination to achieve a life marked by beauty.

I loved this book. It really touched my heart and evoked so many emotions in me, and brought me to tears more than once. Mostly, I wanted to reach right through the pages and hug Barbara and all her siblings. And her mother too. What strength and character each of them has shown. I am in awe and admiration of all of them. I loved how they really looked out for each other and protected one another: from the father, in school, in their neighborhood.

It is so sad that any children had to live like this, but I know many do. Blessings to Barbara and her siblings and I hope they have all healed from the trauma of their childhood and are enjoying much deserved happiness.

Ms. Moss is the master of the art of the memoir. Her engaging opening line, "Mother spooned the poisoned corn and beans into her mouth, ravenously, eyes closed, hands shaking.," cannot prepare the reader
for the hypnotic tale that unravels, making it nearly impossible to stop reading.

While I had sworn off the Southern trailer park genre, Moss drew me into a personal journey that eclipsed all other memoirs and/or the fictional "biography." Her capicity to weave the unfathonable into her often humorous and lyrical true story of degradition, despair, danger, and disfiguration underscores the value of resilence, tenacity, humor, and critical thinking.

The writer shares a story of the darkest and most shameful view of humanity without a trace of self-pity. Instead she paints a portrait of survival, courage, and the importance of forgiving and moving on.

Having met her at a writer's workshop, I can say, without reservation, that Barbara Robinette Moss, is genuine, talented, and joyful. She is inspirational, and committed to demonstrating the possibility of a fulfilled life in spite of circunstance.

Being from the same area as Ms. Moss, I enjoyed this book on several personal levels. Not only did I recognize all the places, but the people were so familiar. And, while I never suffered like she did growing up, more of what she describes is a part of me than I'd like to admit. What is beautiful about this story, though, is that it will touch anyone, from anywhere. It is a worthy book and I applaud my neighbor!

This is a perfect read. Nothing is mising or over-spoken, just absolutely perfect. Moss is a true inspiration for any woman.

                                Book Description

For more than ten years, the celebrated artist Per Arnoldi of Copenhagen has been working together with the world famous London architect Norman Foster. Arnoldi’s contributions range from posters of Foster’s buildings to targeted chromatic interventions in interior spaces to the complex total "chromatic concept” for a massive new structure. His color choices serve to create atmosphere and also guide the user clearly through the space. This book provides systematic and detailed documentation of this entire collaborative spectrum. Projects include: the Commerzbank in Frankfurt, the Reichstag in Berlin, the Imperial College in London, HM Treasury in London, the National Police Monument in London, the Arag Tower in Düsseldorf, the World Port Center in Rotterdam, and Decaux’s headquarters in London. The photographs were taken specially for this book to capture the specific qualities of the interplay between space and color.

                                  Book Description

Now back in stock by popular demand, an invaluable guide to the work of one of the world's leading architects.

Long before terms such as "green" and "sustainability" became fashionable, Norman Foster was designing buildings that were environmentally sensitive and highly adaptable. Today, this Pritzker Prize-winning architect is famous for such monumental structures as Hong Kong's new international airport, the rebuilding of the Reichstag in Berlin, and the Great Court at the British Museum in London.

This survey of more than forty years of work demonstrates how, over a period of tremendous social and technological transformation, Foster and Partners continue to adhere to the themes and concerns that have always shaped their work. Richly illustrated with photographs and drawings, and featuring text by Norman Foster, this catalogue explores all aspects of the practice's achievements as urban planners, architects, and industrial designers. In addition to airports, railway stations, bridges, museums, universities, offices and private houses, the book includes designs of telecommunications and energy infrastructures, street furniture and smaller household items. Together these works form a complex of intelligent, thoughtful, and visionary work by an ever-changing, yet consistently brilliant design team.
