Thomas Jefferson spent five years in Paris, from 1784 to 1789, serving as the representative of a struggling new nation. In this entertaining, scholarly chronicle of those years, we're treated to an account of how the nights spent among the Paris intellectuals influenced Jefferson's thought, and we get a vivid taste of the social whirl in that great European city. William Howard Adams, a leading Jefferson scholar for 25 years, quotes extensively from Jefferson's letters and other writings, and does a commendable job of describing the scenes in which Jefferson would have found himself.
Book Description
In 1784 Thomas Jefferson moved to the sophisticated and exhilarating city of Paris, where he spent the next five years as minister from the new United States of America. This engaging book recreates in word and illustration the atmosphere and personalities of prerevolutionary Paris, and it reveals the profound impact they had on one of America's first transatlantic citizens.

Book Description
In September 2000, Brendan Halpin discovered that his thirty-two-year-old wife had stage four breast cancer. On October 7, he sat down to begin writing about what happens to a man who fears that his best friend might leave him forever.
While his wife’s condition is always in his thoughts, Halpin’s memoir focuses more on the day-to-day, moment-to-moment concerns of a young English teacher forced into the role of temporary single parent to his young daughter, forced to test his relationship with his wife, and forced to face his own fears.
It Takes a Worried Man brilliantly skewers everyone from medical professionals to family members and details how work, pop music, and movies about flesh-eating zombies helped to save Halpin’s sanity. His rants about popular culture, God, and children’s birthday parties add levity and a fast pace to the narrative.
Customer Reviews:
too damn much crying.......2004-08-27
My mother's oncologist once told her that there are 2 kinds of men when it comes to wives' illnesses: those who care too much and those that care too little. It is admirable that Halpin is clearly one who cares too much and I found the initial stages of his account an honest, moving, and surprising amusing one. My father is also a man who cares too much and I had hoped to understand him better through Mr. Halpin's experience. I ultimately stopped reading simply because Halpin sobs in nearly every vignette. The sobbing became repetitive. Moreover I am completely unable to relate to a man who is so willing to openly sob to every person he meets, which strikes me as pathetically self-indulgent and weak. Sorry everyone - I suppose I realize it's important for men to be able to cry but it just reeks of insincerity and weakness when a man's response to every degree of sadness (OR happiness) is tears. While Halpin made much of his need to be strong for his wife, I could not help but think that his efforts lacked consequence and I eventually got tired of reading about them.
Incredible book!.......2003-01-15
This is the most amazing book I've ever read. Mr. Halpin writes with amazing honesty about his experience, without whitewash or apology. The book bounces back and forth between hilarious episodes that are all the more funny because often the people around them don't get it, to the laid-bare terror of dealing with cancer in someone you love and can't imagine living without. I can't stand sentimental books, and this isn't one, and yet some of his revelations took my breath away with their poignancy and honesty. I tend to be a library borrower rather than a book buyer, but this is one to own.
It's like I know these people..........2002-12-03
If you want to know how Michener's "Fires of Spring" ends, read this book. If you laugh, if you cry, if you swear, you're alive. Grab it by the lapels and shake it. That's what Halpin does. It's too bad he's ambivalent about Dan Fogelberg - they sing the same song.
a true work of art.......2002-10-16
I could not put this book down. It had me laughing and crying at the same time. I anxiously await more literary work from this most talented writer.
A Good Read.......2002-10-10
Brendan Halpin's memoir is exactly that - a memoir - that is, a narrative composed from personal experience. It is beautifully written in a free-form style which leaves you feeling like you're sitting in a pub with Brendan every night while he tells you his story. And like any good friend, you will laugh with him, cry with him, and be outraged along with him.
I've been in healthcare for over thirty years, but as a patient, and this book resonated with both my husband and I. He, too, fears losing his best friend, like Brendan. For me, Brendan's voice is very much my husband's, and I will treasure certain lines from the book such as when Brendan has to stop and watch his wife and daughter come through the door, because his whole world just entered the room.
But this book offers a glimpse into someone else's thoughts and experiences in a brutally honest and clear voice and for that reason, it should not be missed. It does not offer a resolution or answers to the big questions, but then neither does real life.
And Brendan, you, Kirsten, and Rowen are welcome on our back deck anytime. We'd love to hear more of the story...

Great!.......2007-07-02
I like everything about woodturning. This book is no exception. You might also want to check the DVD Beyond Wood - Portrait of an Artist. You will see a lot of beautifully photographed pieces and interviews from years of research on the subject.
Segmented Wood Turning.......2007-01-05
This book was very inspiring. I've made several projects similiar to what is in the book. My work has been praised. Although the designing, cutting of pieces of wood and aleining is challenging; the end results are well worth the efforts.
wood turning.......2006-08-19
This book is very helpful and inspiring to any segmented bowl turner. Gives incentive to try the seemingly impossible combination of patterns.
want to learn segmented turning? get the book .......2006-06-03
This book is extremely well written and easy to understand with its great attention to detail. The photos and writings in this book are very detailed from beginning to end. Its truly like taking a course having an instructor explaining to you its that well written. Read the book, the guy is a natural born teacher. The book is printed on high quality sturdy pages. the photos are great. The book is so well detailed that every doubt or question i had was always answered within a page and a half. no questions were unanswered. He tells you how to turn with minimal tools and without complex formulas. If your just starting out get this book it could save you lots of money time and heartache. this book could be used by intermediate turners as well. This is the most detailed and best written instructional book i have ever read with exception of an html book.
Recommended for beginner.......2006-05-05
I just started turning segmented bowls 6 weeks ago - I started turning about 5 months ago. The turning club I joined recommended this book if I could only get one and Ray Allen's if I wanted two. I got both. Ray's seems more for advanced turners to me. This one sits by my table and I constantly refer to it as I'm building my first trys at segementing.
Highly recommend for a beginner like me. Helps you through all the tough spots and also helps to ask the right questions of other club members. If you don't belong to a club - join now.

A Year of Daily Common Sense........2007-09-18
A daily refresher of wisdom, that is too often forgotten. Would be great in the format of a perpetual desk calender.
Love it, love it, love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-02
I am a professional nanny of 12 years and I have to say, reading this book changed my life and everything about the way I work! I have always been a very fun loving, yet strict caregiver but I have felt pulled between what my instinct tells me to do and what the parenting "experts" say. I have found myself being guilted into hours and hours of playing dress up, holding children while they throw temper tantrums and explaining my choices until I am red in the face to a small child who is not listening. I thought that was my job, and the job of any parent or caregiver. Although I wanted so bad to be able to say "no I will not play with you right now" I always was made to feel like I might harm their "self esteem" if I did not drop everything and consider how they might feel if left to play alone for a while. There are so many books on raising children and many of them focus on teaching you how to not harm your childs "delicate" self esteem. This book gave me permission to be a person, even while at work. I dont have to be a slave to a young child in oder for him/her to turn out right. In fact, I learned that I do them more justice when I refuse to be the 24/7 playmate/friend and just focus on making sure they are safe. After reading this book, I have been better able to guide parents into putting their foot down and no longer being owned by their children. This is an amazing book and I recommend it to anyone who refuses to allow children to be the center of the universe.
Read Mr. Rosemond's book with discernment.......2006-10-23
Thinly veiled fundamentalism. Many of his ideas and musing are right on but under what appears to be expertise is harsh old testament fundamentalism. I don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water here but please read with care.
Dr. Phil emphasizes "Children Join YOUR Life" - take heed!.......2006-08-19
if you are parenting a young child, ask the parents of teenagers and young adults to tell you HONESTLY what it's been like for them and what they think they did right/wrong...
ask teachers at the local high school how much they like/don't like their students... and how they wish parents were training/preparing the next generation for Real Life in the Real World ~
John Rosemond reminds all of us that we wanted children because we were sure the experience would enrich our lives... and there is Nothing Wrong With That...
and that the goal is to raise a child that The Rest Of The World will like and love and admire... your child will thank you for teaching them the ways and means to become truly wonderful people, to be recognized as exemplary...
for years now, parents seem to think that if they are long-suffering, it proves that they love their kids... t'aint so...
no one likes a dog who can't behave... suffering with bad behavior from your kids just scares your kids that you are stupid and that no one is in charge! What is wrong with YOU that you'll put up with stuff from them that No One Else will tolerate!
Don't let the tail wag the dog... you have a right to enjoy your life - and the goal is to be as proud of your children as they are of themselves... For Good Reason...
one thing is for sure: leading a good life is Simple... and it's Hard...
be good, work hard, put everything you have into everything you do, be grateful - that's all simple and it's all hard...
and it's all worth it - and LOTS of people will want to know you, date you, be friends with you, hire you, do things for you, be there for you... Everyone loves a truly good person -
Life Is Hard. Period. It can be hard - in the effort you put into being your best self and DESERVING the best life...
or it can be hard going -
day in and day out,
knowing that - the truth be told - you don't measure up...so No Wonder your life isn't so great...
the first accomplishment of children can be Knowing that for sure, they were a joy to their parents, their parents "dug" them and were sorry to see them leave the nest... it's a wonderful thing to be loved and liked by your parents...
it's a gift every parent can give their child... John Rosemond Gets It ~
Mindless?.......2005-05-26
Not to worry, you couldn't raise a mindless robot if you tried! Children are naturally dynamic individuals, ever increasing in independence, and Dr. Rosemond just helps parents set guidelines for appropriate behavior within YOUR family. Too many parents today are overly-concerned with boosting self-esteem and being their child's friend and confidante more than being what they should be - a parent. That really leaves a heavy burden on the child to create or guess the rules. This advice is helpful to the child as it is to the parent. And it is for your child's own safety that they heed their parents.
Not to worry, they'll still rebel when they're teenagers!

Book Description
George Muzea's concept of "The Vital Few vs. The Trivial Many" is described in easy to understand language and clarity. Chapters dealing with these well developed strategies are analogous to George's dynamic and highly sucessful career as a consultant to some of the world's largest and most influential money management firms.
George is confident that his book will open your eyes to a new way of looking at the investment world, especially the stock market. It has been a lucrative and interesting journey for him since he discovered the secrets outlined in his book. It can be for you as well.
Customer Reviews:
A Real Book on how to make money in stocks.......2005-01-15
This was a powerful book for me because it goes to the heart of
my purpose in reading about stocks. It tells how to make money in
stocks. It makes it simple---but not easy. It outlines the author's program for managing stock money and explains the basis for its success. That narrows the field to getting the edge
by knowing who to follow--The smart insiders. And when to invest---when the sentiment is euphoric. That requires knowing where to look and how to measure it. That's what's in the book.
Great content & easy to read.......2005-01-11
I've read dozens of books on investing and this is one of the best I've seen. The content is great and it is easy to follow. I like that there are specific techniques that I can follow - not just hypothetical or dry information. He has and currently does use the techniques he's recommending and he has a good track record doing so. I Highly recommend the book.
A good supplement, but short and thus expensive.......2004-10-23
This is a book written by a fund consultant/manager/owner who profits through the contrarian principle primarily by monitoring/following the stock trading of insiders. Perhaps the author's method is so simple and straightforeward that the book is really short, despite the addition of his autobiography and interesting personal experience, say, his encounter with two persons who quitted their job for full time trading before the burst of 2000 Internet Bubble.
I am obligated to comment it as an interesting read. However, the captioned method is not so practical to common investors who lack the patience/scale to carry on such mode of operation, unless they restrict their scope of monitoring to a limited number of stock, thus drastically reduced the number of opportunities available. So I gave the title of my review as it is. If you have already read many trading books before, you can take it as a supplement. Otherwise, you may spend your $16 more productively on some other investment or trading books.
A little simplistic. But worth reading for the masses.......2004-07-16
Very short. More like a booklet.
Unlike the other reviewers, I have no vested interest. I dont know the author personally.
I would give it a 3 and a half stars.
It appears a new updated version will be coming out in late 2004.
Watch what the insiders DO more than SAY...........2003-05-31
This is a concise, intuitive well written book. Building on the premise of the 80/20 rule (that 20% of the people make 80% of the impact in business), Muzea shows how watching what the insiders are doing with their own hard earned dollars versus what they are saying is the key to making money in the market. That, and timing buying and selling decisions to natural cycles in the market, which he also explains. Someone else would have puffed this into a 400 page book with inane charts and other hoopla. This guy says what he has to say in 80 pages and moves on. Based on firsthand experience seeing management insiders in action, the theory is sound.
Book Description
What kind of person puts a successful career at risk in order to warn the public of a dangerous or illegal situation? What are the consequences of such an action, and how do these people and their families deal with the pressure? What laws protect them, and where can they turn for support? The often surprising answers are in this book, the first large-scale, long-term study of sixty-four courageous ethical resisters and their spouses.
Customer Reviews:
Great introductory overview of an important subject.......2000-08-11
Extraordinary! Great introductory overview of a hard-to-manage subject matter. Gives a good sense of how invaluable whistleblowers are to the fundamental underpinings of democracy itself. The personal profiles will touch your heart. Regular people too often find their lives and careers turned upside down simply because they are honest enough to "commit the truth" after witnessing corruption in high levels of government or corporations. They are our last line of defense when those in power decide the rules need not apply to them. Authors did a good job selecting representative sample from among countless courageous whistleblowers to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude. From threats to our food supply to nuclear weapons scandals to health care fraud to corrupt politicians, etc., etc., whsitleblowers are the source of our learning about virtually every major scandal this country has seen. Shows how inadequate legal protections are for ehical dissenters. Must reading for anyone concerned about integrity and accountability in government and the corporate world.

Book Description
Should we be doing--or trying to do--everything ourselves, or might it be better to contract some tasks out to others? Could they do them better and cheaper than we can? More and more state and local governments are asking these questions, and while there are many answers on the Federal level, these answers often don't apply lower down the line. Nevertheless, it is evident that contracting out is often the better strategy--but how best to go about it? What are the benefits and what are the hidden risks? Dr. O'Looney's book provides precisely the guidance that state and local managers need: first, how to decide to outsource a government service, then step-by-step how to proceed. Based on extensive interviews and other research, O'Looney takes managers through the intricacies of contract outsourcing and administration, but in doing so he makes clear that he appreciates the importance of government. His book is not an argument for privatization, as so many other books are; rather, it is an affirmation of government and the benefits of its many services. Readers will find theory and advice on the services that are most suitable for contracting out; a listing and review of the components of a high-quality analysis, including the analysis of often overlooked political, organizational, and functional aspects of government; advice on how to go from deciding to outsource to actually designing, implementing, and monitoring a contract in situations that could prove hazardous to the livelihoods of government workers. He also discusses the changes that need to be made in the organizational culture, management, and employee training as a result of the change to a contract-based system of providing services; the considerations in designing work specifications and other critical aspects of the government-vendor relationship, and how "ideal" contracting processes and "ideal" contracts can differ according to the nature of the service being contracted. The result is a thorough and highly practical volume for executives and managers in the public sector, and for those who hope to do business with them.
Customer Reviews:
If you're really seriously being asked to outsource..........2000-01-13
This is a "must read" for those in government service who need to know how to reply to political masters who are pushing "the beauty of privatisation".
It may not be that popular with those doing the pushing unless they are really sincere as it is devoid of hype and, as far as this reviewer's experience extends, presents the do's and don'ts & the facts and fallacies as they are, not as one might wish them to be.
The contents take one right from the beginning phase where the concept of outsourcing is considered for the first time through to providing tips for contract monitoring.
The book provides no quick fixes and is thoughtful, if somewhat laconic, in style. It also requires some previous knowledge of the subject. In this regard "Re-inventing Government" (Osbourne & Gaebler - Addison Wesly) and its sequels, as well as "Transforming Government - Lessons from the re-invention Laboratories" (Ingraham, Thompson and Sanders - Jossey Bass Publishers) make relevant companion reading

Book Description
The book makes an assessment of land reforms carried out in Tamil Nadu through numerous case studies of villages. The aim is to arrive at a general conclusion on the overall effectiveness of land reforms legislation and their implementation in Tamil Nadu, and to suggest methods of improvement.
There is a clear logic behind the contributors' choice of the study of particular villages and the methods of fieldwork they have employed. These are based on patterns of landholding and the historical development of tenancy systems, and aim at producing the most accurate big picture of the situation in the state as a whole.
The book provides a comprehensive lowdown on land reforms and tenancy laws in Tamil Nadu. This includes not just details of the legislation, but the rationale behind them, and the ways in which they have worked over time. The contributors point out the problems with the laws, and outline ways in which they could have been avoided and the legislation made more effective.

Book Description
In Dvorak's Footsteps is really two books in one. In order to fully investigate Dvorak's influence on American musical development as well as discover the real emotions that Dvorak felt when he composed the famous "From the New World" Symphony, Ivanov travelled in Dvorak's footsteps: first to New York City where the composer had lived while serving as the Director of the National Conservatory of Music; then to Spillville, Iowa, the Dvorak summer haven he loved so well; and finally to Chicago, the site of Dvorak's triumph as a conductor and composer at the 1893 World's Fair. Ivanov presents his and Dvorak's experiences in alternating chapters thereby presenting fascinating contrasts and comparisons of events a century apart. Throughout, the author gives us intimate glimpses into the Dvorak family's life in the New World, the musical affairs of the late 1800s, and above all, the tremendous impact by Dvorak's teaching and writing on this century's culture. The result of this well-researched book is a portrait of this musical genius so convincing that we feel we know him. His great kindness, his industry, his love for his family and country, and his insistence on treating all people alike shine through the factual information presented.

The Extraordinary Heroism of Polish Rescuers of Jews.......2007-01-17
Mordecai Paldiel provides an anthology of rescuers of Jews, each of whom is identified by name. His descriptions go nation by nation, each beginning with a brief introduction to the nation's prewar relationship with her Jews. Interestingly, the Dutch fascist party (the N. S. B., or NSB) at first had some Jewish members (p. 93).
Unfortunately, his portrayal of prewar Poland exhibits an obvious anti-Polish slant. At least part of the reason can be found in his "For further reading" section (p. 384). His sole source of information on prewar Poland is C.S. Heller's rather Polonophobic book, ON THE EDGE OF DESTRUCTION. A more objective book, from a Jewish viewpoint, is Joseph Marcus' SOCIAL AND POLITICAL HISTORY OF THE JEWS in POLAND, 1919-1939. For a Polish viewpoint, see Giertych's book, IN DEFENCE OF MY COUNTRY.
Paldiel touches on the Karaites, a Jewish sect. The Karaites were generally not persecuted by the Nazis because they were not considered to be racially Jewish (p. 244). This adds further refutation to the claims of the Holocaust-uniqueness advocates, who insist that the Nazis intended to exterminate ALL Jews and to obliterate ALL traces of Jewish culture and religion.
Although Paldiel doesn't mention the fact that 2-3 million gentile Poles (including roughly half of Poland's prewar intelligentsia) were murdered by the Germans in addition to the Jews, he does state the following: "The premeditated and constant harassment of the Polish population led to an unremitting reign of terror, which stands out as exceptionally ruthless and severe by contrast to other occupied countries, and which lasted for the full duration of the occupation." (p. 177). In other contexts, he alludes to the fact that the German occupation of Poland had been more severe than that of Lithuania (p. 238), the Ukraine and Byelorussia (p. 265), and especially western Europe, including the Netherlands (p. 96).
Paldiel would have the reader believe that the eventual fate of the conquered Poles was merely relocation much further east (p. 176). But then he gives away the store when he acknowledges the fact that "relocation" was a common German code word for extermination (p. 206).
In common with many others, Paldiel believes that anti-Semitism had been less severe in western than in eastern Europe. However, according to Paldiel (p. 3), this did not generally translate into proportionally more rescue efforts on behalf of Jews in western Europe.
When one reads about the much-celebrated Danish rescue of Jews (pp. 369-370), one may be astonished to read that the Danes had the luxury of two weeks of time in which to ferry the Jews across the Baltic to neutral Sweden. Moreover, "Not a single one [boat] was intercepted by the Germans or sunk, and all told some 7,200 Jews were saved." (p. 370). Considering the intensity of wartime German security in general and the monitoring of Baltic traffic in particular, one may ask how many Germans sat silent during this time.
Paldiel provides examples of the German-imposed death penalty deterring Polish aid to Jews (p. 207, 224). This refutes the silly argument, advanced by some, that the death penalty was too commonly applied to influence Polish behavior. He also comments: "In no other occupied country was aid to Jews punished with such severity as in Poland." (p. 185). He also acknowledges the fact that the Germans could massacre an entire local community for a single person helping Jews. For this reason, neighbors were often not supportive of an individual in their midst giving aid to Jews (p. 185). However, the unfriendliness of neighbors towards a local rescuer of Jews, much emphasized by Jan Thomas Gross in his recent (2006) book FEAR, was only true of some neighbors (p. 191).
Paldiel concludes: "The threats faced by would-be rescuers, both from the Germans and blackmailers alike, make us place Polish rescuers of Jews in a special category, for they exemplified a courage, fortitude, and lofty humanitarianism unequaled in other occupied countries. When to these dangers are added the severe economic hardships experienced by the population, the uniqueness and outstanding humanity of those that decided to help, in spite of such unbearable risks, are the more praiseworthy and their deeds close to legendary." (p. 185).
