Book Description
In this book Mark Finnan explores the facts and legends that surround Scotland's Prince Henry Sinclair and his possible voyage to Nova Scotia and New England in 1398.
Sinclair was Admiral of the Seas during the latter half of the fourteenth century, a master mariner whose travels took him to England, Norway, France, Italy and the Middle East. His ships sailed westwards to Iceland and Greenland in the wake of his Viking forefathers. But a controversial map and document give strong reason to believe that he led an expedition to North America almost 100 years before Cabot and Columbus, and that he was connected to the Knights Templar and the legend of the Holy Grail.
The Sinclair Saga takes readers on a voyage of discovery from North America to the Orkney Islands, encountering many people and places on both sides of the Atlantic associated with the Sinclair legend.

Okay for overview, not for serious interest in subject.......2001-10-17
I've recently been researching the links between 14th century Scotland, the Templar order, and Henry Sinclair's possible visit to the New World around 1400 -- not to "prove" that Oak Island contains a vast treasure protected by a secret society, but because of my interest in Henry's ties to Orkney and Norway. That said, I realize that most people will be reading the book for very different reasons. Anyway, I thought this book might be a useful read, but it is quite simple, full of the author's highly personalized thoughts (not facts) about the area, Henry's motivations and the nature of the Oak Island constructions, and it doesn't really get into the details of anything. It's a good first book to read about the subject, which has been addressed in several other recent books as well, and it's obvious the author is very interested in the subject, but it's not a comprehensive exploration of the exciting and complicated subject matter. Read this, and then buy "The Lost Treasure of the Knights Templar:Solving the Oak Island Mystery," by Steven Sora.

Book Description
There must be many errors of omission in this work, because the subject is too large to be treated of in two volumes in such way as to do justice to all the officers and men engaged. There were thousands of instances, during the rebellion, of individual, company, regimental and brigade deeds of heroism which deserve special mention and are not here alluded to. The troops engaged in them will have to look to the detailed reports of their individual commanders for the full history of those deeds.

A masterpiece of American literature.......2004-03-14
General Grant wrote this book while dying of throat cancer. He had been swindled by a dishonest Wall Street Broker and his trophies and possessions were stripped from him to satisfy the demands of his debtors. Bankrupt, suffering from a terminal illness and never passing a moment without acute pain, he produced this magnificent monument to his greatness. Those who denigrate Grant as a drunkard, butcher or bumbling President need to read this book in order to correct these errant assumptions. It is impossible to read this book and not realize that Grant was an inordinately intelligent man and one hell of a writer.
Grant's Memoirs are a deserved classic in American literature and considered the greatest military Memoirs ever penned, exceeding Caesar's Commentaries. Grant wrote as he lived: with clear, concise statements, unembellished with trivialities or frivolities. The only "criticism" the reader might have is that Grant bent over backwards not to wound the feelings of people in the book. He takes swipes at Joe Hooker and Jeff Davis, but what he left unsaid would have been far more interesting. A compelling and logical reason why Grant was so spare in his comments was because he was involved in a race with death. He didn't know how long he could live and therefore, "cut to the chase."
Grant's assessments of Lincoln, Sherman, Sheridan and other military leaders are brilliant and engrossing. His style, like the man himself, was inimitable and couldn't be copied. In everyday life, Grant was a very funny man, who liked to listen to jokes and tell them himself. His sense of the absurd was acute. It's no accident that he loved Mark Twain and the two hitched together very well. Twain and Grant shared a similar sense of humor, and Grant's witicisms in the Memoirs are frequent, unexpected and welcome. There are portions where you will literally laugh out loud.
Though Grant's Memoirs were written 119 years ago, they remain fresh, vibrant and an intensely good read. I have read them many times in my life and I never weary of the style and language that Grant employed. He was a military genius to be sure, but he was also a writer of supreme gifts, and these gifts shine through on every page of this testament to his greatness. All Americans should read this book and realize what we owe to Grant: he preserved the union with his decisive brilliance. In his honor, we should be eternally grateful.

Man proposes and God disposes. There are but few important events in the affairs of men brought about by their own choice. Although frequently urged by friends to write my memoirs I had determined never to do so, nor to write anything for publication. At the age of nearly sixty-two I received an injury from a fall, which confined me closely to the house while it did not apparently affect my general health. This made study a pleasant pastime. Shortly after, the rascality of a business partner developed itself by the announcement of a failure. This was followed soon after by universal depression of all securities, which seemed to threaten the extinction of a good part of the income still retained, and for which I am indebted to the kindly act of friends. At this juncture the editor of the Century Magazine asked me to write a few articles for him. I consented for the money it gave me; for at that moment I was living upon borrowed money. The work I found congenial, and I determined to continue it. The event is an important one for me, for good or evil; I hope for the former.
Customer Reviews:
Authentic but dry.......2004-11-25
U.S. Grant's second volume of his memoirs provide a detailed but dry, unemotional history of his efforts in the Civil War prior to his taking control of the Army of the Potomac and the entire US Army.
We get the details on the actual "unconditional surrender" memo that made him famous, inside scoop on Halleck's jealousy and busting then reinstating Grant, why he was frustrated with Rosencrantz, and why the Rebels lost Chattanooga, but we don't get the man's inner thoughts. We don't get his feelings, his insecurities, his pontificating or reflecting on war and death. The text is virtually devoid of any feeling whatsoever. It is not until the last third of the book when Grant utters his first emotional thought on the carnage at Vicksburg: "While a battle is raging, one can see his enemy mowed down by the thousand, or then ten thousand, with great composure; but after the battle, these scenes are distressing and one is naturally disposed to do as much to alleviate the suffering of an enemy as a friend."
This detachment is strange as Grant began writing this book shortly after being diagnosed with terminal throat cancer, so one would think he would have been extremely introspective and reflective at this time.
Finally, the reader should remember that Grant spent most of his Civil War career in the Western theatre of the war. So while you get first-hand account of operations in Tennessee and Mississippi, none of the book is devoted to the most publicized part of the war - the exploits of the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia. That's in Part 3.

Book Description
By a daughter whose father died of Alzheimer's disease, this memoir uses conversations, poems, letters, and creative imaginings and effectively echoes the unpredictable progression of the disease.
Customer Reviews:
a rich, experimental way of capturing the mind of a father with Alzheimer and a family living with it.......2007-10-16
The author's poignant and powerful use of experimental prose and poetry invite her reader into her world, a world of grief, torment, and wonder, as she and her family watch and participate in losing her father to Alzheimer's. The reality of the angst and the realization of the utter helplessness are conveyed so beautifully through memory, narrative, letter writing, and music. What makes the writing so powerful, so convincing, though, is that it is often as fragmented as the mind of the Alzheimer patient. We, as readers, become one with the patient, as well as the family.
Takes you on a journey.......2007-10-11
I use this book, The Glory Walk, in my Creative Non-Fiction class as an example of how a talented writer can take the horrific facts of her father's decline and death from Alzheimers and create a true, beautiful, painful portrait of the journey of grief. She captures brilliantly the trauma and sometimes joy, of the journey, showing the reader how circling a truth, grief in this case, is sometimes the only way to get back home.
A Glorious Walk.......2007-10-05
The Glory Walk is a glorious walk through the life of man in the eyes of a daughter. Rememberances of a life lived that every reader can relate to. Reading this book will make you want to call your dad and tell him you love him. If you can't call him you will think of him with love and wish he was with you.
I read a lot of memoirs.........2007-08-29
This one was written fairly well about the authors father decent into Alzheimer's Disease. I guess I expected more.
Of a daughter who gradually lost her father.......2003-05-15
Cathryn E. Smith's The Glory Walk is the candid memoir of a daughter who gradually lost her father to the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's disease. A moving testimony, filled with compassion and devotion, one that clearly resonates with the reader in terms of its poignancy and personal sharing, The Glory Walk is worthwhile reading and a recommended addition to community library collections.

More Making Books by Hand: Exploring Miniature Books, Alternative Structures, and Found Objects.......2007-09-13
EXCELLENT illustrations! This book not only provides excellent ideas, it also CLEARLY shows you how to execute the techniques necessary to complete the project! Excellent reference book for anyone who wants to create their own professional looking books!
BEWARE.......2007-02-16
The book "More Making Books by Hand: Exploring Miniature Books, Alternative Structures, and Found Objects" is, contrary to expectation, not a supplement or addition to the book "Making Books by Hand: Exploring Miniature Books, Alternative Structures, and Found Objects", but merely a REPRINT of exactly the same material. It differs only in the additional word 'More' in the title.
DO NOT PURCHASE BOTH BOOKS IN THE ASSUMPTION THAT YOU ARE ACQUIRING MORE INFORMATION. You are merely buying two identical books.
With regard to the value of the information found in this book, there are others that are more informative, definitive and inspiring.
Making small books.......2006-08-07
For a beginner, I found everything I needed in this book, from materials to step-by-step instructions. Very easy to follow.
Inspiring!.......2006-02-25
This book is divided into two sections. The first one is an introduction to the techniques and materials used for bookbinding. The technique are illustrated with clear drawings to show you what to do. I don't know anything about bookbinding so I can't tell if this part of the book describes best practices, traditional techniques, or modern adaptations. I can say, however, that it was perfectly understandable and clear. The materials are all common and easy to find...though I would have liked to see more brand names mentioned, just so that I was EXTRA sure I was getting the right stuff at the store.
The second part of the book contains instructions for a series of projects. Unless you are a pretty good artist, there's no way you will be able to reproduce these incredible miniature books since many of them include original artwork. But WOW, are they cool to look at! And of course you can design your own pages using stickers, clipart, cutouts, rubber stamps, or anything else.
Keep in mind that when the authors say "miniature," they mean it! The projects are all very small. (The techniques section in front will help you learn how to make books of any size, though.)
Getting into more detail.......2005-08-31
This book is good for the crafter with a bit of experience. It has some great ideas for someone who has a little bit of knowledge about making books by hand. The instructions are pretty easy to understand and the end projects are wonderful!

Guidebook focuses on plant care needs for healthy, vibrant results.

A to Z listing of plants by both common and scientific names makes finding a plant easy every time.
Customer Reviews:
Not the definative houseplant book - but still good........2006-10-16
The Miracle Gro guide to houseplants is much better than many other houseplant books in one respect: there are so many detailed photographs on the actual care and maintanence of houseplants. Many other houseplant books I've read have drawings or just explanations of how to repot plants and other similar tasks. There are some great step-by-step instructions in this book.
One problem with this book is the way that the plant sections are laid out. I found it difficult to locate certain plants. All the plants are listed alphabetically by their common name. This shouldn't be too big of problem, except many of my plants I do not know the common name of. Also, if you are looking up, say, Orchids, they are spread all over the listing because of the different variations. I wish all the Orchids were in one sections, subdivided by subspecies from there.
There are some great pictures in this book; however, some of the plant pictures are a little small. Overall, this is a nice book to use in conjunction with other houseplant guides. I would not consider this the definative houseplant guide but it was definately worth the time I invested in reading it.
Guide to Growing Healthy Houseplants .......2006-02-13
Overall very concise and informative on each specific house plant. My only peeve is that the pictures of each species be larger. Small pictures makes it hard to identify the right species of unknown plants.
Great Beginners Book.......2005-10-13
This book was a very helpful guide with great coloured pictures. It's easy to read and understand. With this book I was finally able to identify some plants that I had.

Book Description
Raising vegan children in today's society is much easier when you can draw from the experiences of other parents. Filled with advice gleaned through interviews with hundreds of vegan families, this book promises parent-tested answers to your most pressing questions.
Topics covered include: Transitioning children to a vegan diet, school and daycare dilemmas, nutrition and health, social situations, mixed marriages, traveling, instilling compassion in children, and more!
Customer Reviews:
great, wish it were more applicable.......2007-09-14
I loved this book! Read very easily, but packed with info. It brought up situations I hadn't even thought of, like vaccinating your kids. There were a few things I didn't like. For instance, when Erin gives advice on whether or not to support your daughter's girl scouts troop by buying cookies, she seems to think it's okay to buy them, as long as you give them to a charity. For most of us, being vegan isn't just not eating animal products, it's economics: denying our money to the industries. A lot of her advice isn't applicable at all to the majority of Americans who live in small towns. There are no vegan or even vegetarian-friendly restaurants in most of America, and the very small cities which were near (an hour away) my hometown didn't even have a health food store.
Overall, though, very good book. I'm glad she breaks down possible options for dealing with each age group, especially teenagers, when it comes to being vegan. Love the recipes, too.
Vegan Book.......2007-01-19
This book is good but ONLY for very early beginners. Most of the information, for me, was common sense and I have only been a vegan for 3 months.
Great for beginners.......2005-10-25
This book has great tips for people that have recently become vegan. The recipes are easy and taste good, not just for kids but for us adults also.
Much needed vegan resource.......2005-08-17
Bringing up children in the healthiest way is a daunting task for any parent, but vegan families have special concerns. From wondering if your children will get adequate nutrition to questions about whether they should take a trip to the zoo, vegan parents may feel pressured to compromise their beliefs.
"Raising Vegan Children in a Non-Vegan World" defines a vegan as someone who doesn't eat meat, dairy products, eggs, or any food not of plant origin, such as honey. It also states vegans avoid wearing clothing made from animal products. They don't use cleaning products or cosmetics made from or tested on animals. They also avoid amusement where animals are confined, such as zoos or circuses. The book cites compelling reasons for a vegan lifestyle. The number one being the mistreatment of animals used for human consumption. It also lists health benefits of omitting animal products from your diet.
This complete guide for vegan parents deals with issues that arise at each stage of a child's development. You'll get advice for feeding children from toddler age to teens that ensures they get required nutrients. Tips are included for avoiding hidden animal ingredients at home and while eating out. You'll learn that beans are sometimes made with animal fat, soy cheeses may contain casein or rennet, and even bread may contain whey.
Parents learn how to choose a day care or preschool that will cater to their child's special diet and how to constructively deal with problems that may arise. When children enter school, a new set of potential issues arise. This book gives advice on dealing with teachers and school staff, handling bullies and teasing, school parties, field trips, fundraisers, and dissection. Pavlina also gives advice on explaining vegan choices to children.
Vegan parents wondering if their children will still be able to socialize at birthday parties, scout organizations, holiday parties, and summer camp will be reassured by Pavlina's commonsense suggestions. Even traveling is not a problem when you are prepared for any eventuality. In fact, much of Pavlina's advice is useful to non-vegans. She shows the wisdom of "being prepared for the worst but hoping for the best" - words any parent can live by. Pavlina encourages dealing with problems that arise in a constructive manner. She gives excellent suggestions for educating others about animal rights and positive ways to put "compassion into action".
The last section of the book gives recipes yummy enough to tempt any palate. You'll learn to make French Toast, sandwiches, snacks, muffins, and cookies without animal products.
"Raising Vegan Children in a Non-Vegan World" is a must for vegans and indeed a valuable tool for any parent. It's a reference book you will use again and again.
Great resource for vegan and vegetarian parents.......2005-05-18
Answers questions you may not have considered (especially for those of us with young babies who are just trying to figure this stuff out). Guides you in ways to address daycare/school issues and makes you feel like you're not alone in dealing with the 'food issue' when your child is in someone else's care. It's easy to read and very helpful in detailing ways to answer some of those ridiculous questions that people always ask about...I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Bill Brandt, the greatest of British photographers, who visually defined the English identity in the mid-twentieth century, was an enigma. Indeed, despite his assertions to the contrary, he was not in fact English at all. His life, like much of his work, was an elaborate construction. England was his adopted homeland and the English were his chosen subject.
The England in which Brandt arrived in the Thirties was deeply polarized. He photographed both upstairs and downstairs, and recorded the industrial north as well as the society rounds of the affluent south. Although much of his work was for the new illustrated magazines, it was frequently influenced by surrealism and an eye for the slightly strange. The subjects of his portraits include the greatest creative figures of his age, and his English landscapes were sublime. His radical treatment of the female body forms a landmark in the history of the photography.
Paul Delany ambitiously traces the details of Brandt’s life and reveals how the biographical facts and the fantasies that accompanied them deeply affected Brandt’s work. The biography is richly illustrated with duotone reproductions of his masterpieces and a number of unpublished private photographs.
