Mull & iona highways and byways review.......2000-05-26

If you are the type of traveler who likes to park your car or bike alongside the road and get off the beaten path, this book is for you. Particularly for the Isle of Mull, it is a very detailed source of local monuments, nature trails, hidden sites, small village location and information, and some local history. It also includes information for the main tourist destinations. The book includes detailed maps with locations of the various points of interest. The book is also helpful to the more casual tourist who takes a car onto the island with plans to do some general exploration.

Mockingbird Years is not, perhaps, the ideal book to give to your therapist friends; it is, however, both a wickedly original personal history and a ringing critique of the therapy culture. A Life in and out of Therapy, the subtitle calls it, but as far as the bulk of the book is concerned, that's mostly in. An awkward, difficult, probably learning-disabled child, Emily Fox Gordon was a veteran of five different psychologists by the time she turned 17. She then spent several years of enforced idleness at a Massachusetts psychiatric hospital. But she's no girl interrupted: her stint in the bin was in fact the culmination of several fantasies--better in every way, the adolescent Gordon thought, than its alternative of going to college:

Throughout my years as Dr. G's patient, I felt a guilty and unshakable conviction that I was completely sane and that I had health to squander. Of course, my notion that patients were expected to be crazy was naive, but I had swallowed whole the familiar ideology that connects madness to beauty of spirit.... I loved the notion of myself as saucer-eyed and frail, and I was ashamed of the blunt and caustic person I knew I was. I hoped that if I applied myself, I might evolve toward becoming the fragile and lovable being I so wished to be. I was looking for transformation, not cure. I wasn't interested in being happier but in growing more poignantly, becomingly, meaningfully unhappy.

Gordon's book abounds with such paragraphs, in which she combines unflinching self-examination with a prose so precise a clear wind seems to blow through the mind. Her m.o. is alien enough to the confessional spirit of our times that it takes awhile for the point to sink in: Gordon doesn't want to make us love her. Her book is not about acquiring sympathy--she's had plenty of that--and consequently, she's not afraid to be unsympathetic. What she wants from her writing is the same thing she wanted from therapy: not psychological but moral understanding, not a retreat into self but a means of entering into relations with the world.

She found these in her unorthodox relationship with psychologist Leslie Farber, who she followed from the psychiatric hospital to New York City. In conventional terms, there are any number of things wrong with this picture: Gordon basically attached herself to Farber's family, spending hours of each day simply hanging out at his Upper West Side apartment. Even Gordon could see how unhealthy her dependence was, and she broke off their therapy. Nevertheless, the rest of Mockingbird Years is in some sense a mash note to Dr. Farber, the man who by simply being himself--by being her friend--freed her to pursue "the conscious life." These days, she conducts her ongoing inquiry into self and the world through writing, "very much like therapy," Gordon tells us, "except the therapist is absent and I've given up all ambition to get well." By now we are used to the narrative of salvation through therapy; it has become its own genre, a Lives of the Saints for our age. Mockingbird Years is a very different beast indeed. While the writing is certainly readable, it isn't without frustration. There were times I wanted to shake the author out of her deulded state. I do think there comes a point in your life when you have to accept the things that have happened and move on. Parents are not perfect. Find me a person who thinks their parents made all the correct child rearing decisions. That person is lying. While the author does not blame all her troubles on her family, these are the moments that scream the loudest. It's okay to pout about your parents and how they raised you, but to write a book about it after the age of nineteen suggests a deeper problem.

hard to put down.......2002-06-24

I am a therapist and work at an inpatient psychiatric facility. I often read first person accounts of therapy or life with mental illness, etc. I found this book refreshingly free of jargon and diagnosis. It also provided an interesting perspective on the changes that have occurred in mental health treatment since the 1960s. The author's depiction of herself at the brink of adulthood so closely describes many persons that I see today. The fact that she has walked so far away from the life she led then is encouragement both for today's 'patients' and for all the therapists who seek to help them. It was hard for me to put the book down; I read it in 2 days.

there's a lot here i liked.... but i have a complaint about this book... and perhaps it will be viewed as very superficial, yet nontheless it had an effect on me (and a few other readers i've spoken with)... it's the cover.... i'm really bothered by the glamorization of smoking on the cover. okay, so it's in the story... but still, book covers are ads, and when smoking is glamourized in other ads, it is viewed as irresponsible. i think that's the case here as well.

a hyper-intellectual author with a flair for exquisite writing, writing a mostly dull memoir, with its most interesting part being her whopping idealization/idolization of her semi-famous therapist Leslie Farber (he symbolically = her parents), who seemed to have primarily his own best interests at heart as he performed her therapy. She seemed to start to dabble with this thought by the end of the book, but didn't really run with it at all. Although I found the book readable (primarily because I was interested in reading about the behind-the-scenes Farber), I found her life dull primarily because I felt she wasn't really accessing her deeper emotional issues, and was mostly just skimming across the emotional surface, and distracting the reader from that fact by her gorgeous, poetic writing...

aside: that both her parents (and her brother) went to swarthmore came as a surprise to me, but shouldn't have. I went to swarthmore too, and found it a highly emotionally uninspiring and dead place, with most of its residents and the institution itself troubled but masked behind a veneer of intellectual brilliance.

Howling in the Therapeutic Wilderness.......2001-05-21

A very fine book indeed. Gordon's prose is sparkling, natural, and revelatory. There are enough fine turns of phrase in this relatively brief book to fill a small notebook.

Mockingbird Years is an excellent account and ruthless critique of therapy as a way of life. Gordon has attained a level of frankness about herself that derives from her years in therapy, and a ruthless honesty about the limits of -- indeed the ultimate hollowness of -- therapy as a way of life. Gordon's utter candor about her own driftlessness, manipulativeness (the trait that accounts for the title), and neediness account for the negative reactions that some reviewers have formed of her by her own hand. But they give her account its ultimate moral credibility.

What determined Leslie Farber's power in Gordon's life was the fact that his relationship to his patients (at least to this one) was on moral/existential one rather than a therapeutic one. He simply engaged her as a human being, and left her responsible for the rest. The resolution of her account is her final assumption of responsibility for and embracing of life on its terms, rather than on therapeutic terms.

Her account of her relationship with her last therapist, Dr. B, is not unsympathetic to his therapeutic approach or to him personally. She simply found his approach to derive from a therapeutic zeitgeist that is not grounded in any full concept of the human being in the world.

While the account is not a period piece as such, those Boomers who were teens and young adults during the late 60s and early 70s will be interested in her take on the times.

The ultimate validation of Gordon's critique of the therapeutic culture and its bastard offspring (e.g., the recovery movement) will be the fact that her book is sure to be used in the education and training of therapists. There is probably no group more avidly devouring Mockingbird Years than aspiring therapists. But in their striving to read her account as a set of hints for improved therapeutic technique, they will miss her point entirely.

Missing Project.......2007-03-18

I received my book and immediately got some crystals to make one of the rings, which I could not believe that I was able to start and finish in an hour, even when it was my first time making this type of jewelry. Sometimes the instructions can be somewhat confusing. And I notice that the instructions for PROJECT # 8 are nowhere to be found in the book. Still a great book to get if you want to learn new ways of making great pieces of jewelry and ideas.

This book has beautiful designs and ideas for your own jewelry creations. I have only tried one pattern so far, which was an easy one itself, with nice pictures to follow. The instructions can get a little confusing just by the way the designer states/words the directions. But overall I am satisfied with the book because I have the same taste in design.

This book contains virtually nothing BUT pretty pictures. The captions for the pictures are minimalist, and there is no discussion at all of the considerations which went into the color selection and design of the pieces. If you are looking for "inspiration", this book may satisfy you. If you are looking for information, you will most likely be seriously disappointed.

This cost data is very useful for estimating the cost of demolition and remediation of plants and facilities sites. I believe it is the best information available at a reasonable price.

Use wisely!.......2002-07-02

The R.S. means Landscaping and Site Work, 2002 cost data guide can help and hurt. It is full of wonderful data and prices that are a general standard in the industry. It is not a guide though, for the beginner. I made the mistake of using the guide for estimating purposes. If used in this manner, you end up with an over-inflated bid. I now understand that this is just a reference guide and not an estimating tool. Overall it is packed with a wealth of information, but on the downside it takes some time to understand, and use properly.

Gotta Have it BOTH Ways..........2007-01-30

There are so many books available on Amazon & the public Library that are guides for Women avoiding "bad" Men, but how many are out there that do the opposite??? I'd like to know...
This is one of the better ones, especially with its point-checklists at the end of each description, but it is easy to get the feeling that this unilateral masterpiece is just following the river rapids of similar "Ladies avoid Mr. Wrong" books out there. I'd like to see a companion volume set up as this one was (Description, sample conversation, whys & wherefores, point-count checklist, and score interpretation). Maybe the title "Pink Flags"? (Is she a gold-digger? Is she a Nomad? Is she a Daddy's Girl? etc.)
One other criticism--many of the traits listed are superficial, not globally oriented (example--Does he look downward while conversing, or do his eyes dart around? Well, is this in reference to GENERAL behavior, or does it only apply to your (current) date, or behavior toward you specifically?) This especially would apply to behavior signifying any of the more violent or extreme categories. Then it tends to generalize.

To the other reviewers here: I can't believe you actually needed the book to outline specifically that you're not SUPPOSED to follow all the guidelines... did you seriously not understand that all on your own? You're supposed to take what you can and cannot deal with and go with that. For example, I can deal with people being late all the time, because I am too.

Regardless, I found it rather useful. I tend to believe that 'our society' tends to normalize a lot of innapropriate dating behaviors (of men and women alike), and this book helps point them out.

Can't say I'm disappointed.

Sure, you need to take some of this advice with a grain of salt, but the reason that men have gotten away with a lot of the stuff they've pulled is because women put up with it. It's eye-opening to read this book and see so many people you've known described down to the smallest detail. Women deserve to be treated well. This book helps identify the men who aren't going to do that.

Wrong idea.......2004-03-27

This book is just too simplistic in its recipes for detecting the wrong man. Basically, it assumes that all women want to marry the same type of "ideal" man. Is this really the case? not very likely. Its pretty sad if you need a book like this to tell you who to date. Plenty of people who live with their heads in the clouds are going to go through life single, giving them plenty of time to read this.

Dissapointing.......2004-10-06

Having researched the life and work of Remedios Varo for nearly two years, I have found Janet Kaplan's book a must because she had an astonishing budget and support for having a fine printed book with excellent images and a fairly good biography of this artist. However, having read almost everything published on Varo, reading her own writings and kwnowing the world she lived her last ten years, I consider Kaplan book to be too far fetched on the personal interpretation she makes about Remedios Varo's life and work. Trying her best to make her preconceived ideas about Varo's paintings to fit in, this book is will easely fool those who doesn't know about surrealism, Mexico in the fifties and Remedios Varo.

Excellent Overview of Remedios Varo's Life........2002-02-26

I greatly enjoy this book. She was part of the Surrealism and the book gives an excellent overview of Remedios Varo's life, her artworks, and her surrealists friends. The book shows a great compilation of her works and her great contribution to Mexican Art. Eventhough she born in Spain, she called Mexico her home.If you want to learn more about Spanish Surrealists this is a great artist to read about.

Fine book on underrated female surrealist........1998-11-05

This book is quite good, and to my knowledge, the only one available covering Varo's work. As such, it is essential for her devotees, and even to some extent, for fans of surrealism. Both Varo and her fellow artist Leonora Carrington, (whose works are thematically and technically very similar) deserve wider appreciation. It is, however, excessive to award the book five stars. The reader might compare it to Druick's "Redon", which, with its simultaneously wide-ranging and penetrating scholarship and analysis, and luminous reproductions epitomizes a five-star art book. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Kaplan's book.

This book changed my life........1998-08-27

Unexpected Journeys is one of my all-time favorite books. Not only did it give me the opportunity to connect with Remedios Varo, but it expanded my understanding of surrealism, and feminism. The prints are amazing. I couldn't put it down. Thoroughly informative. Kaplan displays rare insight.

An excellent book to understand surrealism and Remedios Varo.......1998-05-01

This wonderful book let the reader know Remedios Varo as a painter and as a woman. It gives a perspective of the world in those years and helps understand the surrealism as a unique movement in the arts. It has plates in color of the most famous paintings of Varo and a complete explanation of them with a very complete bibliography.
