Excellent retelling of the darkest days in American history........2007-06-02

I am sure all of us remember where we were on that tragic Friday nearly 44 years ago. The book and companion CD recreates those horrible images from Dallas in 1963 up to the time of Kennedy's funeral. Whether you like him or not Dan Rather did a fine job in narrating the CD featuring the actual news clips from the broadcasts at that time. Excellent reading for those who remember this tragedy and for those who like to get a sense of what America and the world was like at that time.

The Media Hype that propels the Oswald Myth today.......2006-09-09

This is an excellent book(with CD) ,through the media's eyes.There is no scientific ,logical evidence that Lee Harvey Oswald shot the President.Yet,the media captures the staged-event and the hoopla connected with it. (-My theory-) Nixon never forgave the Irish Catholics for the tragic ,senseless murder of his childhood brother ,Arthur Nixon.Nor forgiving of Kennedy for the alledged voter-fraud of the 1960 race.Johnson divided the democratic vote and Nixon reaped the unified Republican consenses.So-called "witnesses" add to the myth, that all the shots came exclusively from the book-depository warehouse building.There is no mentioning of Charles Harrelson,the most credible shooter.There are Christian Masons,as well as Jewish B'nai B'rth ones.So what about the Masonic connection to Dealy Plaza?And no mentioning of the Nixon Cuban Miami goons,calling off a possible Miami assassination attempt.Nor a mentioning of George Sr. assigning landmark status to a Dallas grand hotel ,that day.If you think Oswald was the lone shooter,don't believe the hype.Investigate.One star for the pictures,and none for reporting the truth.

What an engaging experience..........2006-03-31

I typically read books that I think will be good for my mind or my soul, rather than selecting them strictly because they will be fun or interesting. This book reminded me about the joys of pleasure reading.

Of course, the topic of the book is far from fun, and I was initially disappointed by the focus of the book. Rather than focusing strictly on the events surrounding President Kennedy's assassination (which I am too young to have experienced), this book addresses those horrific days from the perspective of many journalists. It is basically a series of interviews from literally dozens of the newsmen around the country who played significant roles in the coverage of this historic event.

Though I didn't really anticipate this emphasis, it was actually an incredibly fascinating vantage point from which to analyze the events surrounding JFK's death. To hear the stories of the men and women who helped the nation and world process and understand these shocking scenes was at times exhilarating and at other times gut-wrenching.

Besides these fantastic interviews, the book also includes a CD, which gives the listener an opportunity to hear 42 different soundbites (most only a minute or two in length) starting with Kennedy's arrival in Dallas and concluding with the funeral. I imagine that this would resonate well with folks who heard many of these clips over forty years ago, but it was equally interesting for me to hear them for the first time.

Ultimately, this book and the accompanying CD far exceeded my expectations. I was hoping to learn some interesting little trivia tidbits, but instead, I was engrossed in those terrible four days when the country suffered and grieved such a great loss. I was absolutely captivated and had a hard time putting down the book.

As the leading civilian authority on the U.S. Secret Service (and President Kennedy's interaction with the agency), I was much interested in this book by Cathy Trost. In conjunction with the audio cd, this book provides a dramatic overview of that terrible time in our nation's history. I recommend this book and cd, especially to the newcomer. vince palamara

Excellent book about a good friend.......2004-07-19

I loved this book! I have "hydro," as so many of us call it, and Daryl, Marcie's son, is a friend of mine. He is only slightly older, and although he has been through a lot more than I have, I think this book would be encouraging and uplifting to anyone, especially a parent facing a diagnosis of hydro in a child.

I was touched by this book in two ways. Besides having hydro, I have a son with autism and Chiari malformation (herniated cerebellum), and I identified with a lot of Marcie's frustration with parents of "normal" kids who just don't get how we feel when they complain of things like runny noses and ear infections after we have been through serious health situations with our kids. She writes candidly and sometimes brutally honestly about it.

I said four stars because, although I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who needs encouragement when facing a situation like this, she is oftentimes a bit too open about certain aspects of her life that have nothing to do with Daryl's hydro...and the language can be shocking to someone who isn't expecting it. If you can handle that, I know you'll benefit from this honest, compassionate story.

Realistic and Marvelous.......2003-04-14

Sheiner's memoir of dealing with her child's disability is beyond inspirational. For those who have grown tired of memoirs that sugar-coat the realities of how children with disabilities, and especially their parents, are treated within the medical community, this is a realistic account. Sheiner shares raw reality--this is quality writing.

She absolutely nailed the most painful themes associated with having a child with hydrocephalus (or similar conditions) from a MOTHER'S perspective.

Although I had a difficult time relating to the marital issues and women's liberation struggles specific to this author (she was only 19 when she had her son in 1965) I found the central themes associated with mothering an ill child to be very powerful.

The author articulates the pain, frustration, anger and other raw emotion only a mother faced with such circumstances can know. I'm going to ask my husband and my own mother to read it next.

I thought there might be something of value here re kids with disabilities, but there's nothing but a general whine about 'poor me'. Many women just aren't cut out to be mothers, and it's unfortumate for the child's sake that they can't know this beforehand. Disabled children are children just the same, it only takes more patience and effort to thrive.

Beginner's Best Bet.......2007-04-15

I very likely own every book and DVD Richard Raffan has put out. I admire his work, with its pure and flowing form. And I'm often astonished, when watching him, with his displays of technique that makes things I still find challenging look easy. I do have one problem with most of the books and a few of the DVDs - while there is considerable information in them the overall level is a bit beyond complete beginner. It helps a good deal, for example, if one has actually attempted several boxes under someone's tutelage before attempting to make one straight from Raffan's instructions. I don't believe that this is Raffan's fault, but rather a problem of photographing or drawing the dynamic actions of the turner. I find that I get the most out of these resources when I already understand the basics. Truth would have it, there are very few books that will turn a beginner into a turner. This is a hobby where apprenticeship really pays off.

Turning Wood is the exception to this rule. Not only is the text quite clear, but there are countless photographs and drawings that actually capture the techniques and approaches. Raffin focuses on technique, which is fine, but I wish he had spent even more time discussing design. For that I suggest you take a look at Turning Boxes, another of his best books. But from a how to viewpoint, there is not better book.

I would suggest making a point of acquiring this book. It will help you develop good habits early instead of having to unmake bad ones. From here you can branch out in any direction of the myriad the lathe has to offer and know that you have what it takes to accomplish what you want. Next to having a teacher this will be your best resource.

A must for the novice turner.......2005-05-03

As a brand new wood lather owner, I wanted a book that would give me some basic instruction, some exercises and a simple project or two. I was not disappointed in Turning Wood by Richard Raffan. Mr. Raffan writes with humor although what he is saying is not to be taken lightly. He cautions again the things that can harm a new turner and even one who has worked on a lathe for years such as wrapping a rag around your fingers when applying oil to a project or an even better one: "Don't work when you are tired".

Turning Wood begins with an explanation of the parts of the machine and continues with the extras one could buy to enhance/make your turning easier. He discusses chucks, drives, faceplates and adhesives. There is even a chapter on sharpening the tools which is very important as a dull tool can get you hurt. He also recommends getting The Complete Guide to Sharpening by Leonard Lee which I plan on purchasing. He does speak to safety many, many times and I have to agree that this is one area that cannot be over emphasized.

The projects offered were a Pencil Pot, a Vase and even a Lidded Box. He does recommend "wasting" wood so you become familiar with the best way to make grooves, coves- turn your square blank to a cylinder, create your grooves, coves and bead and turn it back to a cylinder again and keep repeating until there is nothing left. Simply stated PRACTICE, PRACTICE and more PRACTICE! As in all woodworking, dust and wood chips are a constant. Mr. Raffan describes how to make a Handmade Vacuum System.

I did find several proofing errors in the book like the one on page 62: "Over the years I've had four lots of stitches mending my face and forehead..." and a photo reference on page 14 that refers to page 65 (the actual graphic is on 67). I also found a sentence split by the Vase project which took me a bit to figure out where the end of the sentence was. It was four pages over.

I thought a glossary of terms would have been useful to the novice turner. And it would have been nice if the book were ring/wire bound as it would stay flat on my workbench so I could reference the exercises and projects as I used the lathe.

All in all, this is one book that every beginning turner should invest in. If you do nothing other than look at the photos and read their captions, you will get a small part of what this book is all about. It is packed-full of all the do's and don'ts of turning wood.

Richard Raffan, who is a leader in the field of woodturning with international fame, takes us the viewers through various projects while commenting all along the way. Many of his hints, tips, and tricks improved my turning skills the same week that the DVD arrived. I like his quick pace. It is energizing. His commentary gets to the point regarding how he aligns himself with the chisels, lathe, and piece of wood. This helped me to understand what is important when it comes to being fast... real fast and precise.

Some may find it all a bit abrupt because he does not coddle the viewer with encouraging words nor re-explain himself. Raffan's personality totally compensates for what some will perceive to be amateur production values. I recently watched "Turning Boxes," also by Raffan, and liked it even more. Keep it in mind.

Buy the book instead.......2007-05-23

The book is far more informative. I found the pace of the DVD too fast. Also, the photography was far more distant than I would have liked.

Ifyou are looking for a comprehensive beginner's guide to orchids at a reasonable price this is it. The book is well organized, easy to understand, and decently illustrated. Photos and quality may not be of the best quality, but you can find those in one of the many other pictorial guides to orchids available. If you want to get growing, this book is a great start.

This is a truly excellent starter and it's great for the medium level amatuer, too. There is a lot of information, yet it's not succint. The quality of the pictures is not satisfactory, however, this is one of the very few books which show overall plants, as opposed to show macro of flowers only. This is not a minor point: when I placed my first order online, I decided I was not going to buy dendrobium, because I don't like the plant. While this reflect my personal taste, knowng how the overall plants look like was a major plus. Moreover this book teaches how to measure the light intensity by simply using the lightmeter of your TTL camera. To me this information alone is worth the price of admission.

I found this book a little too general..and actually did not answer my pending questions about the cattleyas...still some valued info of a general nature about other varieties warrants by keeping it.It is good for identifying species and family.

A Good Beginners Book.......2005-01-05

If you are just starting out with orchids, this is a great, low cost, book for basic information and great for a quick reminder to the experienced grower when obtaining new orchids. I would not say this is the last book you will ever need if serious about growing orchids, but it a good place to start!

Summary: With the thousands of books about orchids, look a little further until you find a better book than this.
This book is designed for the person who doesn't know much about orchids, but wants to learn. Photographs are included with the intention of conveying information - but the quality of the paper, or the printing process, results in almost adequate resolution. Meridth Publishing must think photographic quality isn't important for this type of book, because it isn't designed to be photography book, but with low quality images, one can't distinguish that flowers shown are orchids, let alone be able to compare the images to gain a better understanding of the types of orchids - which is exactly part of the theoretical content of this book.
The person new to orchids will want to know how to pronounce the new vocabulary. Very limited information is provided in this area.

All About Growing Orchids provides a wealth of information for the beginner orchid grower and dispels the myth that orchids are difficult to grow. Attractively laid out (and priced), the easy to read text is complemented by colorful drawings and excellent photographs. Written primarily with the home hobbyist in mind, many of the photographs depict orchids displayed in the home, which should inspire readers to fully exploit the potential of these breathtaking flowers for home decoration.

To cover all this territory in 96 pages is a challenge and All About Growing Orchids succeeds admirably. What are the drawbacks? The biggest is that the Orchid Selection Guide, though it provides an excellent overview of the different types of orchids to grow in a few pages, inevitably has to resort to some generalities. The information on orchid sources is also due for an update, and the book could benefit from a guide to orchid resources on the Worldwide Web. Nevertheless, armed with this book, beginner orchid growers will be well on their way to learning how to grow and bloom orchids in their homes.

I am a journalist so I received an advanced copy of this book to review. I have a two year old and a newborn so I assumed "sibling rivalry" was years away. But when my two-year old started acting out (blatantly disobeying, throwing tantrums over apparently nothing), I turned to this book. There is an indepth section on what happens when a new baby enters the scene that has been a godsend. It has been such a relief to know that my older daughter's behavior is not just common, it's to be expected. This book has made understanding and dealing with her tantrums and defiance much easier. I feel confident that if and when the REAL rivalry begins I will be equipped to handle it in a loving and nurturing way.

very useful for y research project: the mystical aspect of Moreau's work is thoroughly explored and clearly explained, which is not an obvious task!
